Unknown Broadcast | A Night in Murder’s Den & Spiders: Wax Museum Killers and Amazon Terror

A broke journalist spends the night among wax murderers before a second radio nightmare unleashes a dog-sized spider in the upper Amazon.

Beyond Midnight’s “A Night in Murder’s Den” sends Raymond Hewson into Mariner’s Waxworks to earn money from an overnight newspaper feature. The cellar’s Chamber of Horrors contains effigies of infamous killers, but one figure is different: Dr. Bourdette, the missing Parisian throat-cutter whose hypnotic eyes and carefully held razor appear to follow Hewson whenever he looks away. The drama adapts A. M. Burrage’s classic wax-museum story through Hewson’s escalating battle between reason, imagination, and survival.

Arch Oboler’s Lights Out drama “Spiders” moves to the tropical forest of the upper Amazon. Joe and Dixie, two desperate men with violent pasts, collect butterflies and insects they hope to sell for passage home. When Dixie sees a black spider as large as a dog, Joe ignores every warning and builds a falling cage. He imagines circus money, silk shirts, and freedom; the creature waits with burning eyes while greed convinces him that a trap makes it safe.

Capturing the spider only begins the horror. Heat, a broken leg, an empty cage, a body wrapped in heavy silk, and the creature’s almost hypnotic gaze turn an escape scheme into a jungle nightmare about predators that do not behave like ordinary animals.

Unknown Broadcast pairs two archival stories about men who voluntarily remain beside something they know they should fear. One watches wax figures that may move; the other stares into a living specimen that may be thinking back.
