A shipwrecked narrator boards an enormous spectral vessel driven toward the Antarctic unknown in Edgar Allan Poe’s nautical nightmare “MS. Found in a Bottle.”
The voyage begins aboard a merchant ship sailing from Batavia. After an unnatural calm, a catastrophic storm destroys nearly everyone aboard, leaving the narrator and one elderly Swedish sailor to endure a sea that seems determined to swallow them. A gigantic black ship finally appears above the waves—but rescue becomes another form of terror when the narrator is thrown onto its deck.
The vessel’s impossibly ancient crew moves through him without acknowledgment. Its decaying timbers, obsolete instruments, strange charts, and uncontrolled southward course suggest a ship displaced from ordinary time. Hidden among sailors who cannot see him, the narrator records what he witnesses and seals the pages in a bottle as the vessel approaches a vast whirlpool at the edge of the known world.
First published in 1833, “MS. Found in a Bottle” helped launch Poe’s literary career and established themes he would return to throughout his work: isolation, unreliable perception, forbidden knowledge, and reason collapsing before the sublime.
