Welcome back, my dear. Tonight we slip past the velvet edge where conscience and consequence share a heartbeat. Greed calls from the deep; a confession rots in the light; a noir mind stumbles behind the curtain; and summer itself says farewell with a ghost’s restraint.

- 💔 You Can Die Again — A remorseful man confesses to murder, but his story frays under questioning, memory unspooling like thread in a dark room. (Written for radio by Sam Dan; original cast includes Richard Mulligan.)
- 💰🌊 Money Money Money — A voice of temptation, a room of gold, and a dangerous dive where the price of breath is counted in coins. (“Money, money, money…” becomes a spell—and a curse.)
- 🎭🖤 The Black Curtain — Amnesia, pursuit, and a star caught in a web of Suspense; the curtain lifts to reveal a face he can’t trust—his own. (Suspense, starring Cary Grant.)
- 🌅🍂 Summer Goodbye — On a heat-heavy wind, Quiet, Please intones a farewell—rituals, recollections, and the thin place where seasons and souls change hands. (Written & directed by Willis Cooper; featuring Ernest Chappell.)

Step carefully, my dear—behind every choice tonight, something listens.

00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:15.720
Ah, welcome back, my dear, so glad you could join

2
00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:20.920
me yet again. Oh what's that? Oh no, no, no,

3
00:00:21.800 --> 00:00:27.280
just a little redecorating, trying to liven up the place,

4
00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:33.439
just a wee bit. Please please take your seat, get comfortable,

5
00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:40.799
Please please take my favorite chair. While I was waiting around, well,

6
00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:45.280
I found myself ruminating. I feel like that's how we

7
00:00:45.399 --> 00:00:51.560
all get when we clean up around our abode. What's that?

8
00:00:51.719 --> 00:00:58.399
Well maybe, but don't you worry about that? I just

9
00:00:58.479 --> 00:01:03.200
started to wonder as I moved things around, wondering if

10
00:01:04.359 --> 00:01:06.319
you can die again?

11
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:23.120
Come in?

12
00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:27.879
Welcome, Hi am E. G.

13
00:01:28.079 --> 00:01:32.159
Marshall. Welcome to the sound of suspense, to the fear

14
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:35.760
you can hear. For the next fifty two minutes, I'll

15
00:01:35.799 --> 00:01:38.120
be your companion on a journey to a place in

16
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:41.239
the past. It used to be that only the mystics

17
00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:45.840
believe you could go back relive your life. But didn't

18
00:01:45.879 --> 00:01:49.599
so eminent the scientist as Albert Einstein say that the past,

19
00:01:49.879 --> 00:01:55.480
the present, and the future are all intermingled somehow. Well,

20
00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:59.079
why should we question a gentleman named Spencer Chadwick who

21
00:01:59.159 --> 00:02:03.159
is asking a very a vital question, Inspector, do you

22
00:02:03.239 --> 00:02:05.120
believe a person can do it again.

23
00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:06.719
Do it again?

24
00:02:07.879 --> 00:02:12.800
Go back where to that point in his life where

25
00:02:12.840 --> 00:02:19.120
it went wrong? It turns sour and corrected. No, No,

26
00:02:19.240 --> 00:02:22.520
I don't believe it's possible. Well, I'm doing it, Inspector.

27
00:02:23.159 --> 00:02:27.159
I'm doing it. I'm changing it. I've gone back, Inspector,

28
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:38.039
I've gone back. Our mystery drama You Can Die Again,

29
00:02:38.599 --> 00:02:42.560
was especially written by Sam Dam and stars Richard Mulligan.

30
00:02:42.960 --> 00:02:46.199
It is sponsored in part by Anheuser Busch Incorporated brewers

31
00:02:46.199 --> 00:02:46.879
a Budweiser.

32
00:02:47.479 --> 00:02:49.599
I'll be back shortly with Act.

33
00:02:49.479 --> 00:03:01.960
One this evening.

34
00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:06.759
We are concerned with bright young men, that is, those

35
00:03:06.759 --> 00:03:11.719
who began as bright young men like Spencer Chadwick. Bright

36
00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:15.639
Young Spencer Chadwick married his boss's daughter. But that was

37
00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:19.759
twenty three years ago, and today young Spencer has arrived

38
00:03:19.800 --> 00:03:23.319
at comfortable middle age. This morning, he will pick up

39
00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:26.080
his phone and dial the private number of a highly

40
00:03:26.159 --> 00:03:26.919
placed friend.

41
00:03:31.960 --> 00:03:33.960
She's Inspectata's office. Sergeant, no road.

42
00:03:33.879 --> 00:03:35.919
Speaking, Sergeant. This is Spencer Chadwick.

43
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:37.319
Good morning, mister Chadwick.

44
00:03:37.400 --> 00:03:40.360
Connect you right away, Spence.

45
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:42.120
I hope you're not calling the cancer lock golf day.

46
00:03:42.280 --> 00:03:46.879
No, no, Martin, I'm I'm calling to tell you, I

47
00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.080
murdered my wife.

48
00:03:51.080 --> 00:03:54.080
I won't believe it, Spence. I can't believe it, Marty.

49
00:03:54.159 --> 00:03:55.599
Look at her. She's dead.

50
00:03:55.680 --> 00:03:57.800
I see she's dead, but I won't believe you killed her.

51
00:03:57.919 --> 00:03:58.800
She's been stabbed.

52
00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:02.159
Inspector, Yes, Sergeant, yes, and that's the Knight Marty Spencer.

53
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:05.000
You surely find my fingerprints on it. What's that bruise

54
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.919
on your head? We had a fight. She hit me

55
00:04:07.960 --> 00:04:09.240
with the candlestick, Inspector.

56
00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:11.000
A glass door here leads to a terrace.

57
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:14.680
It's been broken, Spence, an intruder, a thief. Did he

58
00:04:14.719 --> 00:04:17.920
slug you and kill Margaret? No? No, I killed Margaret

59
00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:19.759
at that broken door. She tried to get away. I

60
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:23.439
dragged her back into the room. Whose places this mine?

61
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:27.279
I didn't know you had an apartment downtown. I've been

62
00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:28.160
staying with a girl.

63
00:04:28.360 --> 00:04:28.720
Spence.

64
00:04:28.759 --> 00:04:31.439
You're talking to me, your closest friend, Marty fire Day.

65
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:33.160
Excuse me, Inspector. Shall I start the routine?

66
00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:33.360
Yes?

67
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:33.959
Of course, Angin.

68
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:36.199
Are you going to arrest me? Money?

69
00:04:36.360 --> 00:04:36.800
I have to.

70
00:04:37.959 --> 00:04:38.920
I'm ready to go now.

71
00:04:38.759 --> 00:04:39.720
But I'm not ready to go.

72
00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:40.439
Look.

73
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:42.600
I can't believe what you're telling me. I can't even

74
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:43.759
believe you were cheating on Margaret?

75
00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:45.439
How can I believe you killed the You've been a

76
00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:48.759
policeman for twenty five years. Money, do you still have illusions?

77
00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:50.120
Faith ideals?

78
00:04:50.199 --> 00:04:51.879
If I do, it was because of people like you

79
00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:52.560
when Margaret?

80
00:04:53.800 --> 00:04:56.959
I'm sorry Marty. Look, Spence, is this the way it happened?

81
00:04:57.439 --> 00:04:59.720
You were having an affair? Margaret found out about it,

82
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:01.519
she came. He had confronted you. One thing led to another,

83
00:05:01.560 --> 00:05:02.279
and you killed her?

84
00:05:02.839 --> 00:05:03.000
Now?

85
00:05:03.079 --> 00:05:04.600
Is that the story?

86
00:05:04.839 --> 00:05:09.279
Yes? Yes, yeah, that's it. Where's the girl? I suppose

87
00:05:09.560 --> 00:05:13.920
she's dead too? You suppose, yes, yes, we can say

88
00:05:13.959 --> 00:05:14.319
she's dead.

89
00:05:14.360 --> 00:05:15.360
Well, how did she die?

90
00:05:16.360 --> 00:05:16.959
I killed her?

91
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:19.000
When?

92
00:05:20.360 --> 00:05:24.680
Oh, A long long time ago? A long time Spence,

93
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:27.199
you're not making any sense. How could you have killed

94
00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:29.160
her a long time ago? If Margaret confronted the two

95
00:05:29.160 --> 00:05:32.160
of you here today? I don't know. I don't know now.

96
00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:34.680
Just arrest me and don't ask me any more questions

97
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:36.600
I have to ask, Spence. I can't accept what you're

98
00:05:36.639 --> 00:05:40.279
telling me now. Think how could you have killed her

99
00:05:40.279 --> 00:05:42.920
a long time ago? Or did she kill me?

100
00:05:44.120 --> 00:05:46.480
Spence? Please tell me what happened.

101
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:47.639
It doesn't matter.

102
00:05:47.639 --> 00:05:49.079
If I want to help you, Spence, I'm your friend,

103
00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:51.639
you won't believe me by me just trying me.

104
00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:54.319
It's even hard for me to believe it. But it's true,

105
00:05:54.360 --> 00:05:56.680
Spencer will when you just sit down and try to

106
00:05:56.720 --> 00:05:57.480
pull things together.

107
00:05:57.600 --> 00:05:58.560
Tell me what happened?

108
00:06:00.040 --> 00:06:07.720
What happened? It started one morning. It was three months ago.

109
00:06:09.079 --> 00:06:14.079
I came downstairs. Margaret was at the breakfast.

110
00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:17.519
Table morning, Darling, Gofie.

111
00:06:18.279 --> 00:06:20.959
Thanks, yes, an email Margaret, nothing.

112
00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:22.560
Worth delaying breakfast card from my brother.

113
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:23.839
Where is he now?

114
00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:26.519
He had to put in for a pairs at Pego Pego?

115
00:06:27.079 --> 00:06:29.879
That's pengo, pengou. When is he coming home?

116
00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:33.079
Oh, next year maybe, or the year after. When he

117
00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:36.439
gets bored or tired, or needs money or decides to

118
00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:38.480
get a new girlfriend or another boat.

119
00:06:39.319 --> 00:06:41.839
Then he's thirty eight years old and he'll never get anywhere.

120
00:06:42.839 --> 00:06:45.240
Don't say that. It seems to me he goes everywhere.

121
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:49.319
His life and yours, Darling a study in opposites. You

122
00:06:49.319 --> 00:06:51.879
were born poor and you wound up rich. He was

123
00:06:51.879 --> 00:06:58.079
born rich, wound up poor. Dinner tonight with a sadder fields.

124
00:06:58.600 --> 00:07:04.079
What for four? Oh my god, I practice for almost five

125
00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:06.399
minutes before you came down, tossing off what I just

126
00:07:06.439 --> 00:07:09.879
said in an offhand casual way. The dinner with the Sadafields.

127
00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:13.360
This is the cool of the century. A dinner party

128
00:07:13.399 --> 00:07:16.399
at the home of Senator Sadderfield. Ask me how I

129
00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:16.720
did it?

130
00:07:17.959 --> 00:07:21.959
Why? Why do we want to have dinner with Senator Saddlefield.

131
00:07:21.879 --> 00:07:24.639
Spence, you asked me to arrange for the invitation.

132
00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:26.959
I disagree completely with the man's principle.

133
00:07:27.120 --> 00:07:29.240
We understand all that, but you're the one who decided

134
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:30.399
to give politics of world.

135
00:07:31.600 --> 00:07:32.879
When did I decide to do that?

136
00:07:34.360 --> 00:07:39.079
Well, they say the sign of a really solid marriage,

137
00:07:39.079 --> 00:07:42.720
as if the wife can accept jokes at breakfast? Shall

138
00:07:42.759 --> 00:07:45.959
I remind you of that Chinese or of Indian saying

139
00:07:45.959 --> 00:07:49.240
that you've been spouting lately? M M. A man spends

140
00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:52.560
his first twenty years living for himself, his next twenty

141
00:07:52.759 --> 00:07:56.360
living for his family, and his next twenty living for

142
00:07:56.439 --> 00:08:00.759
his country. It was you who decided dinner is at

143
00:08:00.759 --> 00:08:07.240
seven thirty, black tie to be home early, then end

144
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:13.199
up listening going why are you looking at me like that?

145
00:08:13.360 --> 00:08:14.879
Is?

146
00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:15.720
Is there something wrong?

147
00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:24.279
Who are you? What did you say? I?

148
00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:25.920
I said, who are you?

149
00:08:27.160 --> 00:08:27.920
What are you doing? Now?

150
00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:28.480
Look? Darling?

151
00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:31.680
If this is oh no, or what am I doing?

152
00:08:31.879 --> 00:08:34.039
This is a joke? It's not in the best of takes.

153
00:08:34.440 --> 00:08:38.159
I'm afraid. I'm afraid I don't know where I am

154
00:08:38.440 --> 00:08:39.039
or who you are.

155
00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:40.480
Do you know who you are?

156
00:08:41.840 --> 00:08:44.039
Yes? Yes, I think I know who I am. I'm

157
00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:44.840
Spencer Chadwick.

158
00:08:44.840 --> 00:08:47.080
All right now listen, sit quietly for just a minute.

159
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:48.159
I'm going to call doctor Berry.

160
00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:49.840
Oh please please, I don't want to put you to

161
00:08:49.960 --> 00:08:50.399
any in trouble.

162
00:08:50.440 --> 00:08:53.360
Don't get up, Spencer, Please don't get Where are you

163
00:08:53.399 --> 00:08:58.519
going home? This is your home, Spencer, Please.

164
00:08:58.519 --> 00:09:00.600
Don't be alarm? Please, I hope I have frightened you.

165
00:09:00.679 --> 00:09:09.000
I'll leave this minute. You mean that, after twenty three

166
00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:11.519
years of marriage, you look at your wife one morning

167
00:09:11.559 --> 00:09:16.120
and you don't know who she is? Yes, Martin, all right,

168
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:17.799
you walked out of the house.

169
00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:18.480
Now where did you go?

170
00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:21.720
I held a cab?

171
00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:26.039
I went too vow.

172
00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:30.440
I don't know s all right now.

173
00:09:30.360 --> 00:09:30.720
It's nothing.

174
00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:31.480
Who was gone?

175
00:09:32.120 --> 00:09:33.399
Just answer this, sir? What do you want me to

176
00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:35.519
take you describe?

177
00:09:35.799 --> 00:09:36.120
Okay?

178
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:41.919
You the doctor? Oh? Do you think the Redskins got

179
00:09:41.960 --> 00:09:43.039
any kind of chance this year?

180
00:09:45.559 --> 00:09:45.840
All right?

181
00:09:45.879 --> 00:09:47.879
Let's try politics. You didn't say it feels going to

182
00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:51.919
run again? Where's my old man?

183
00:09:51.960 --> 00:09:53.600
Would have put it? You wasn't exactly vaccinated.

184
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:55.559
Would a photographic needed to drive it? Why are you

185
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:58.120
headed north? Well, you said to Dr Chadwick. Building is

186
00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:00.559
down on Jefferson Square. I distinctly yes.

187
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:01.799
Think he told me nothing.

188
00:10:02.440 --> 00:10:03.840
What would I be doing in your cab at nine

189
00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:05.320
o'clock in the morning if I didn't intend to go

190
00:10:05.320 --> 00:10:17.200
to my office? Yes, good morning Rose, Oh, good morning.

191
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:19.519
Mister Keathwick. These are doctor Burger.

192
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:20.399
Sitting in your office.

193
00:10:20.759 --> 00:10:24.360
Doctor Burger, Yes, doctor Burger, come in here, Spence.

194
00:10:24.360 --> 00:10:25.120
I don't have all day.

195
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:30.399
I'll come in and shut the door. May I remind

196
00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:33.519
you that this is my office? Fifteen minutes ago I

197
00:10:33.559 --> 00:10:35.759
received a call from Margaret. Margaret, Is she all right?

198
00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:36.600
How about you?

199
00:10:37.879 --> 00:10:38.360
I thought it.

200
00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:40.159
Important enough for me to stop off here on my

201
00:10:40.159 --> 00:10:40.840
way downtown.

202
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:44.600
Hold out your wrists. Wait? Why did Margaret coll you?

203
00:10:44.759 --> 00:10:45.480
She told me.

204
00:10:45.399 --> 00:10:47.039
About that little episode?

205
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:48.039
What?

206
00:10:48.039 --> 00:10:51.240
What little episode? You don't remember saying a certain thing?

207
00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:51.519
All?

208
00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:52.080
Please?

209
00:10:52.080 --> 00:10:53.679
What is this all about? Hall?

210
00:10:53.799 --> 00:10:56.320
Seems to be a little fast. What am I supposed

211
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:59.039
to have said to Margaret? I want you to report

212
00:10:59.080 --> 00:11:02.639
to the hospital right now. You can't just walk into

213
00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:04.440
my office and tell me you report to the hospital.

214
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:06.960
Who says I can't. But what's the matter with me?

215
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:09.240
I don't know. That's why I'm putting you into the hospital.

216
00:11:10.480 --> 00:11:13.559
What did Margaret tell you that you didn't know who

217
00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:18.799
she was? How could I not know who she was?

218
00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:20.919
Have you had moments when you.

219
00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:23.639
Didn't know people, or you didn't know where you were

220
00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:24.960
or what you.

221
00:11:24.919 --> 00:11:27.759
Were doing there? I'll certainly not. I'll level with me, Spencer,

222
00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:33.080
than those things they happen sometimes to everybody. How often

223
00:11:33.159 --> 00:11:35.879
do they happen to you? Well, the incident with Margaret

224
00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:39.559
was that the only one? Well, Spencer, i'll.

225
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:46.639
See you with the hospital in thirty minutes.

226
00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:51.480
You did it? You here, Spence, of course, I'm here.

227
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:54.120
I won't keep you an hour longer than necessary, probably

228
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:55.240
get you up at the end of the day.

229
00:11:55.399 --> 00:11:58.000
Well, you do what's necessary. That's a good attitude.

230
00:11:58.519 --> 00:12:00.720
Most of you high power and those types of so

231
00:12:00.840 --> 00:12:02.960
self important start to lecture me.

232
00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:04.320
I'm here. I agree.

233
00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:05.039
I need some help.

234
00:12:05.080 --> 00:12:06.440
Now. Now what's calling is help?

235
00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:09.120
I am I'm talking to you and I should be

236
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:10.039
arranging for tests.

237
00:12:10.519 --> 00:12:14.320
Now. You just relax, listen to some music, read, take

238
00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:14.759
a nap.

239
00:12:15.279 --> 00:12:28.799
I'll see you, hello, Stencer, Peggy, Everything all right, stance.

240
00:12:28.919 --> 00:12:32.120
Peggy, Peggy, where are you the apartment?

241
00:12:34.279 --> 00:12:35.279
Give me you're all right?

242
00:12:35.840 --> 00:12:41.080
Oh yeah, yes, oh yes, yes, I'm certainly all right now.

243
00:12:41.159 --> 00:12:44.960
Oh Peggy, Peggy, I almost lost you.

244
00:12:45.039 --> 00:12:46.080
How could you lose me?

245
00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:50.799
It could happen, doctor Burger, Doctor Burger, he could, he

246
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:55.480
could make it happen, But not now, not anymore. Do

247
00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:59.240
you know why why you called me? Just in time?

248
00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:03.840
You warned me, just in time. And I'm getting out

249
00:13:03.879 --> 00:13:08.840
of here this minute.

250
00:13:12.759 --> 00:13:13.639
Mister Chadwick.

251
00:13:13.879 --> 00:13:14.360
Yes, Ruth.

252
00:13:15.080 --> 00:13:16.879
Aren't you supposed to be at the hospital.

253
00:13:17.159 --> 00:13:20.080
I'm not supposed to be anywhere except in my office

254
00:13:20.120 --> 00:13:20.919
during the business day.

255
00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:23.440
Oh, doctor Berger.

256
00:13:23.639 --> 00:13:25.320
He's been calling just about every five minutes.

257
00:13:25.399 --> 00:13:26.039
And your wife.

258
00:13:26.720 --> 00:13:27.759
Shall I get them for you?

259
00:13:27.879 --> 00:13:30.639
No? No, I left doctor Burger not saying I changed

260
00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:34.240
my mind about the necessity for what we were discussing.

261
00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:37.360
Now tell him I have nothing, dad. Oh yes, sir, Oh,

262
00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:39.200
I call my wife and remind her we have a

263
00:13:39.240 --> 00:13:42.080
dinner date with Senator Saddlefield. And no calls. No calls.

264
00:13:42.120 --> 00:13:44.639
I don't want to talk to anyone, yes, sir, except

265
00:13:45.639 --> 00:13:57.159
except a young lady. She'll call herself. Heyde well for

266
00:13:57.279 --> 00:14:01.879
twenty three years you hum the same tune. And then suddenly,

267
00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:05.240
one morning you hear the music of a different drummer,

268
00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:10.279
a drummer named Peggy, or is she a piper named

269
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:14.360
Peggy who will have to be paid? We shall return

270
00:14:14.440 --> 00:14:28.039
shortly with that too, And so we have Spencer Chadwick

271
00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:31.679
in complete command, ready to take hold of his life

272
00:14:31.960 --> 00:14:35.559
and run it his own way, starting with his wife.

273
00:14:35.759 --> 00:14:38.519
Spencer, is that you there's no problem?

274
00:14:38.600 --> 00:14:40.159
No problem. It's not even a quarter of seven. I

275
00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:41.919
can be dressed and ready to leave in twenty minutes.

276
00:14:42.039 --> 00:14:45.600
Spencer, there is a problem. You made doctor Berger look

277
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:46.679
like a fool. Today.

278
00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:47.600
You read my note.

279
00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:50.120
It explained that you made yourself look like a fool.

280
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:52.720
You admitted to the hospital un less than an hour later,

281
00:14:52.759 --> 00:14:53.759
you sneaked out.

282
00:14:53.919 --> 00:14:56.799
I did not sneak out. I got dressed, went to

283
00:14:56.840 --> 00:14:58.720
the desk and said, I'm leaving some of the bill.

284
00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:02.279
But Spence, you're not. You should be in the hospital.

285
00:15:02.360 --> 00:15:06.279
Margaret, Please stop running my life.

286
00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:08.679
What did you say just now, Spence?

287
00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:11.320
I'm sure you heard me.

288
00:15:11.480 --> 00:15:16.639
I wasn't aware that I was running your life. Spencer,

289
00:15:16.679 --> 00:15:19.600
would you be good enough to explain? Can you show

290
00:15:19.639 --> 00:15:20.279
me how.

291
00:15:20.519 --> 00:15:21.600
You did say? This thing was black?

292
00:15:21.639 --> 00:15:25.639
Tie, Spencer, I'm entitled to an explanation.

293
00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:28.159
Of that remark, Margaret. If you can't understand what I'm saying,

294
00:15:28.720 --> 00:15:38.919
how can I explain it? Quite a man, this husband

295
00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:43.639
of yours, missus Chadwick, some brandy, yes, nikey, Senator. We

296
00:15:43.720 --> 00:15:46.759
need men like you in public life. Spence, fellas with

297
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:50.960
their heads screwed on straight. You know, I have an

298
00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:55.320
opportunity to recommend a man for a presidential advisory commission

299
00:15:55.360 --> 00:15:57.519
on it. I don't think i'd be interested, Senator.

300
00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:01.879
I like your style, Chadwick. You play hard to get,

301
00:16:02.320 --> 00:16:05.600
but you do it convincingly. The public hats that up.

302
00:16:05.840 --> 00:16:09.440
No, no, Senator, it's not a pose, you see, sir.

303
00:16:09.480 --> 00:16:12.240
It seems to me that I've spent all my life

304
00:16:12.480 --> 00:16:13.559
working for other people.

305
00:16:13.960 --> 00:16:17.840
Serving others is the most richly rewarding professional mind can follow.

306
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:21.240
That's if he happens to be a selfless person. But

307
00:16:21.960 --> 00:16:25.120
I never saw myself as a manufacturer of farm equipment.

308
00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:29.480
I wanted to study languages, the basic structures of human communication.

309
00:16:29.879 --> 00:16:32.879
Ladmirable calling. Margaret and I were going to leave for

310
00:16:32.919 --> 00:16:35.039
Tibet on a honeymoon, but my father in law became

311
00:16:35.399 --> 00:16:38.159
seriously ill. Somebody had to look after his affairs till

312
00:16:38.200 --> 00:16:41.200
he could get on his feet again. That was twenty

313
00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:43.919
three years ago. He never did get back on his feet,

314
00:16:43.960 --> 00:16:46.320
and I never did get out of his office.

315
00:16:46.480 --> 00:16:50.480
But you transformed that little factory into the third largest

316
00:16:50.519 --> 00:16:51.639
at Rhino.

317
00:16:51.600 --> 00:16:53.799
Senator, I know, I know. I did it for my wife,

318
00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:57.360
my in laws, my employees, the Stockholerst. But now, finally,

319
00:16:57.720 --> 00:17:00.200
at length and at last, I'm going into busines is

320
00:17:00.480 --> 00:17:04.960
for myself? What sort of business, the Spencer Chadwick business,

321
00:17:05.319 --> 00:17:08.119
The let's please and amuse and excite and develop and

322
00:17:08.200 --> 00:17:11.599
hands Spencer Chadwick. Thank you for your office, Senata, But

323
00:17:11.680 --> 00:17:14.400
there are many others who are more worthy, not to mention,

324
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:15.839
more willing.

325
00:17:23.039 --> 00:17:27.519
Spencer. When did you decide you were no longer interested

326
00:17:27.519 --> 00:17:28.480
in public service?

327
00:17:29.160 --> 00:17:30.839
Oh, it's been building for a while.

328
00:17:31.960 --> 00:17:32.880
We'll have to talk.

329
00:17:33.640 --> 00:17:35.279
Oh about what about what?

330
00:17:37.079 --> 00:17:39.200
I don't know if this is a pose.

331
00:17:39.160 --> 00:17:42.599
Margaret, I'm sure I can explain. Now, let's drop in

332
00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:43.359
somewhere for a night.

333
00:17:43.400 --> 00:17:44.559
Can Now let's get help.

334
00:17:45.839 --> 00:17:46.000
Now?

335
00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:47.759
Do you remember what you said to me this morning?

336
00:17:48.839 --> 00:17:52.599
You know you insists you don't recall our little scene

337
00:17:52.640 --> 00:17:53.559
at breakfast.

338
00:17:54.319 --> 00:17:55.799
No, I'm very sorry.

339
00:17:56.599 --> 00:18:00.960
You looked at me this morning, you said who are you?

340
00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:03.920
You said it with sincerity and conviction. You meant it.

341
00:18:04.480 --> 00:18:08.960
Look, I know I may have been by daydreaming.

342
00:18:09.079 --> 00:18:12.880
No, it was not day dreaming. It was wishful thinking.

343
00:18:13.559 --> 00:18:15.960
Margaret, What are you saying, Spencer?

344
00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:21.759
You're having an affair, but please don't deny it.

345
00:18:22.880 --> 00:18:23.759
But I mind, i'd not.

346
00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:26.799
It fits in with what doctor Berger told me about

347
00:18:26.839 --> 00:18:30.599
what When you say to me, who are you? It

348
00:18:30.720 --> 00:18:34.240
means you no longer want to know me. You're trying

349
00:18:34.279 --> 00:18:36.200
to wish me out of your life.

350
00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:38.279
Oh, Margaret, Margaret, I can tell you.

351
00:18:38.359 --> 00:18:41.359
Listen, Spencer, don't try to insult my intelligence or yours.

352
00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:45.200
And then what just happened at Senator Sarer Fields?

353
00:18:45.839 --> 00:18:46.680
What just happened?

354
00:18:46.720 --> 00:18:49.119
Well, suddenly you're no longer interested in public service?

355
00:18:49.359 --> 00:18:52.559
Why if you heard me talking to him? You know

356
00:18:52.640 --> 00:18:54.680
that finally I want to do things for me.

357
00:18:54.960 --> 00:18:56.680
But he as much has offered you a post that

358
00:18:56.799 --> 00:19:00.720
you dreamed about, a sensitive post. You could become an

359
00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:02.839
important man nationally. You've spoken about it.

360
00:19:02.839 --> 00:19:05.680
It doesn't Margaret, Margaret, I no longer care about it.

361
00:19:05.680 --> 00:19:09.160
Well, of course not, because you've become controversial, make enemies.

362
00:19:09.519 --> 00:19:12.240
And then they try to get something on you, and

363
00:19:12.400 --> 00:19:15.680
now that you're having an affair, you're vulnerable to scare.

364
00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:16.440
I am not having.

365
00:19:16.599 --> 00:19:20.039
Don't lie to me. That doesn't makes it worse.

366
00:19:25.960 --> 00:19:28.000
But you were lying to a Spence. We know you

367
00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:30.559
are lying. We know about Peggy.

368
00:19:31.559 --> 00:19:32.039
Inspector.

369
00:19:32.160 --> 00:19:34.319
Yes, sageant, if you'll come into the bedroom, inspector.

370
00:19:34.359 --> 00:19:38.200
I didn't want to move anything all right, now, sir,

371
00:19:38.359 --> 00:19:39.279
Here are these pictures?

372
00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:41.079
Are these Peggy?

373
00:19:41.720 --> 00:19:42.359
Are they Spence?

374
00:19:43.440 --> 00:19:43.759
Yes?

375
00:19:44.279 --> 00:19:46.519
Well, sir, if you look at the hairstyle that one

376
00:19:46.519 --> 00:19:47.680
out twenty five years ago.

377
00:19:49.400 --> 00:19:51.400
I no expert, but these don't look like pictures that

378
00:19:51.400 --> 00:19:52.160
were taking recently.

379
00:19:52.200 --> 00:19:55.279
And the clothes in the closets, skirts, blouses, dresses, Are

380
00:19:55.319 --> 00:19:56.279
these Peggy's?

381
00:19:57.519 --> 00:19:58.160
Are they Spence?

382
00:19:59.519 --> 00:19:59.839
Yes?

383
00:20:00.480 --> 00:20:01.319
The styles are.

384
00:20:01.200 --> 00:20:02.519
About twenty five years old.

385
00:20:02.640 --> 00:20:04.759
Now here's a label in a spirit. It's a Lydia Carter.

386
00:20:05.519 --> 00:20:07.960
She was a designer who was fashionable thirty years ago.

387
00:20:09.039 --> 00:20:13.200
Well, Spence, tell us, I.

388
00:20:12.480 --> 00:20:15.920
Can't Why can't you? I don't think I know how,

389
00:20:16.039 --> 00:20:20.720
Never mind how it sounds, just tell it. Martin, did

390
00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:25.039
you ever think you could somehow get a second chance

391
00:20:25.920 --> 00:20:29.920
to do what to live your life over? To answer

392
00:20:29.960 --> 00:20:32.920
your question, no, did you ever think you could go

393
00:20:33.720 --> 00:20:36.039
back to a point in time when you made a

394
00:20:36.079 --> 00:20:39.000
decision which changed everything for you. Will you cross your

395
00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:43.000
own particular rubicon, and if you could go back, start

396
00:20:43.039 --> 00:20:46.279
again and do the thing you really wanted to do?

397
00:20:46.319 --> 00:20:51.519
To answer your question again, No, that's because you never

398
00:20:51.559 --> 00:20:53.400
regretted the cost of your life.

399
00:20:53.160 --> 00:20:53.759
And you did.

400
00:20:54.599 --> 00:20:57.640
Are you trying to tell me that you did every

401
00:20:57.759 --> 00:21:04.680
day for twenty three years? All right, Spence, I won't pressure. No, no, no, muddy,

402
00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:07.319
don't put that sympathetic tone in your voice as if

403
00:21:07.720 --> 00:21:09.680
as if you think I'm some kind of nut. Look

404
00:21:09.720 --> 00:21:13.000
you could plead insanity once again, Marty Mardy, I'm not crazy,

405
00:21:13.079 --> 00:21:16.240
temporary and sand not for one minute. I asked you

406
00:21:16.279 --> 00:21:19.079
a question, can you go back? Can you live your

407
00:21:19.079 --> 00:21:19.720
life over again?

408
00:21:19.720 --> 00:21:21.720
And I gave you my answer, no, but you can.

409
00:21:22.480 --> 00:21:25.960
You can do it. I did go back, not for long,

410
00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:28.640
but I did go back.

411
00:21:29.799 --> 00:21:33.079
All right, all right, Spence, you did go back.

412
00:21:33.279 --> 00:21:38.079
And if I hadn't lost my head, if only I

413
00:21:37.880 --> 00:21:42.559
hadn't killed Margaret, I could have stayed. I could have

414
00:21:42.680 --> 00:21:52.319
started over. Heggy want to go to a movie. No,

415
00:21:53.400 --> 00:21:55.119
I missed the news broadcast. Anything happening?

416
00:21:55.359 --> 00:21:56.920
They think of war just started.

417
00:21:57.279 --> 00:22:00.279
Oh come on, Peggy, come on, there are going to

418
00:22:00.279 --> 00:22:02.799
be any more wars. Everybody knows that people may be crazy,

419
00:22:02.880 --> 00:22:04.440
but they're not insane.

420
00:22:05.160 --> 00:22:08.680
Where I think the man said Korea someplace like that.

421
00:22:09.559 --> 00:22:10.599
Maybe I didn't hear it right.

422
00:22:11.200 --> 00:22:12.599
Hey, if you don't want to go to the movies,

423
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:14.039
what do you want to do?

424
00:22:14.759 --> 00:22:15.319
Sit home?

425
00:22:16.519 --> 00:22:18.720
Just listen to you.

426
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:20.240
Tell me about the trip you're planning.

427
00:22:21.079 --> 00:22:24.480
Well, first, don't call it a trip. We may never

428
00:22:24.680 --> 00:22:27.440
come back. It may take all our lives. Sign with me,

429
00:22:27.720 --> 00:22:29.319
then we may never find it great.

430
00:22:29.440 --> 00:22:30.279
What are we looking for?

431
00:22:30.920 --> 00:22:36.359
The origin of language? For instance, we say brother in English, German, Dutch,

432
00:22:36.359 --> 00:22:40.160
Scandinavians so on, say a form of bruder, same basic

433
00:22:40.160 --> 00:22:44.839
word Latin, Greek frat, The br becomes far Russian obrach.

434
00:22:45.440 --> 00:22:48.839
The differences are all in pronunciation. Okay, How did this

435
00:22:48.920 --> 00:22:52.079
one language spread so far and wide to cover so

436
00:22:52.119 --> 00:22:53.519
many different kinds of people?

437
00:22:53.720 --> 00:22:54.400
A bite?

438
00:22:54.519 --> 00:22:57.440
How? That's what I want to find out. And we

439
00:22:57.480 --> 00:23:01.000
will travel and study and research and one day maybe

440
00:23:01.160 --> 00:23:05.000
maybe what this Indo European language. It's only one of

441
00:23:05.039 --> 00:23:09.960
thirty language families. At one time? Was there one single language?

442
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:14.400
The mother of all was there. I don't know. One

443
00:23:14.480 --> 00:23:17.200
day I hope to find out. Yeah, are you sure

444
00:23:17.240 --> 00:23:19.559
you won't mind scrounging around Europe and Asia?

445
00:23:19.640 --> 00:23:22.079
Oh? I've been to Europe and day, but now with

446
00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:24.759
a backpack with a sleeping that I'm going to love it.

447
00:23:25.359 --> 00:23:28.200
Now. One thing must be clearly understood at no time,

448
00:23:28.680 --> 00:23:31.279
regardless of the bind we may find ourselves in, shall

449
00:23:31.279 --> 00:23:36.839
we ever ever under any circumstances? Whia your father for money? Promise?

450
00:23:37.400 --> 00:23:49.119
I promise, Well, Margaret, where have you been? Spencer?

451
00:23:50.359 --> 00:23:50.559
Oh?

452
00:23:50.640 --> 00:23:54.920
Excuse me, I hope that doesn't sound shruish.

453
00:23:54.960 --> 00:23:56.000
Well, no, no.

454
00:23:55.960 --> 00:23:58.160
It doesn't, as if I'm trying to run your life.

455
00:23:58.200 --> 00:23:59.599
Please Margaret cut it out?

456
00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:02.000
And I ask, is because I had prepared dinner?

457
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:03.079
I know?

458
00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:04.079
Didn't you get my message?

459
00:24:04.200 --> 00:24:04.359
Yes?

460
00:24:04.359 --> 00:24:06.960
I did? I got it at eight? Me you have

461
00:24:07.039 --> 00:24:10.319
at seven, the Miller's, the Bronstein's, and the Gladwells arrived. No, no,

462
00:24:10.440 --> 00:24:13.880
the Gladwell's were here at six point thirty. But why

463
00:24:14.079 --> 00:24:16.759
you had asked me to invite them to dinner? And

464
00:24:16.799 --> 00:24:18.200
these are your friends, Spencer?

465
00:24:19.480 --> 00:24:21.240
I'm sorry, Margaret, I'm sorry.

466
00:24:21.359 --> 00:24:24.400
Yes, well, if there were people I like, I would

467
00:24:24.440 --> 00:24:27.880
have been humiliated this way. I was merely embarrassed, and

468
00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:36.119
I got through the evening somehow, Spencer, tell me who

469
00:24:36.319 --> 00:24:36.559
is she?

470
00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:39.319
Margaret? Margaret? Believe me, there.

471
00:24:39.200 --> 00:24:39.759
Is no one.

472
00:24:39.839 --> 00:24:41.880
Start with the premise that it's my fault. Somewhere I

473
00:24:41.960 --> 00:24:44.400
must have failed you. I've gone wrong, but I don't

474
00:24:44.440 --> 00:24:48.559
know where, and I don't know how. Tell me, Spence,

475
00:24:48.799 --> 00:24:49.839
tell me Margaret?

476
00:24:49.920 --> 00:24:51.480
Please? Margaret is Margaret? What?

477
00:24:52.519 --> 00:24:59.279
Oh Spencer, I've been happy, You've been happy our marriage.

478
00:24:59.799 --> 00:25:03.960
It's it's been the envy of so many of our friends. Oh, darling,

479
00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:05.960
has it been a lie? Have we been living a

480
00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:07.279
lie all these years?

481
00:25:07.799 --> 00:25:09.039
Do you want the answer?

482
00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:10.519
I demand an answer.

483
00:25:10.559 --> 00:25:13.559
The answer is yes, Yes, it's been a lie.

484
00:25:15.640 --> 00:25:18.839
Who is she? Spence? Who is she?

485
00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:25.599
Who is she?

486
00:25:25.640 --> 00:25:26.039
Spencer?

487
00:25:26.640 --> 00:25:27.359
Who is Peggy?

488
00:25:27.799 --> 00:25:30.319
I won't tell you, Martin, I should say who was Peggy?

489
00:25:30.519 --> 00:25:30.960
Inspector?

490
00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:33.519
Do you remember some time ago you saw missus Chadwick.

491
00:25:33.799 --> 00:25:36.759
It was on business? I remember, Oh, yes, yes, yes

492
00:25:36.799 --> 00:25:38.319
I do. It had to do with a burglary, Spence,

493
00:25:38.400 --> 00:25:44.920
a burglary in your house. Believe me, Margaret, this is

494
00:25:44.960 --> 00:25:45.799
no mother at.

495
00:25:45.720 --> 00:25:46.200
All, is he?

496
00:25:46.240 --> 00:25:48.319
I felt? If I called a local precinct, I'd have

497
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:50.839
police tracing all about the place. It just isn't worth it.

498
00:25:50.880 --> 00:25:51.440
Well, what happened?

499
00:25:51.880 --> 00:25:54.519
It's silly, but well, do you know us? We never

500
00:25:54.559 --> 00:25:57.759
throw anything out. It's a sound idea. The worthless junk

501
00:25:57.799 --> 00:26:01.160
of yesterday has suddenly become expensive and it's incredible.

502
00:26:01.200 --> 00:26:04.039
Yes, all right, I'll be brief.

503
00:26:04.079 --> 00:26:06.839
We have a storage space where we keep old things, clothes,

504
00:26:06.920 --> 00:26:08.960
nick knacks, you know, stuff that you say you'll throw

505
00:26:09.000 --> 00:26:11.000
out sometime you never get around to it. You never do.

506
00:26:11.160 --> 00:26:16.079
And well it's all been stolen, stolen, it's missing what

507
00:26:16.240 --> 00:26:18.519
must have been stolen. I don't care about it, but

508
00:26:18.920 --> 00:26:21.160
it's just unnerving to consider that the house has been

509
00:26:21.160 --> 00:26:21.720
broken into.

510
00:26:22.640 --> 00:26:24.440
We'll send a list of the stuff to Sonjan Mirrow.

511
00:26:24.599 --> 00:26:27.039
It's not important, but I feel it. Since a crime

512
00:26:27.039 --> 00:26:29.319
has been committed, it should be reported. Did I do

513
00:26:29.359 --> 00:26:29.880
the right thing?

514
00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:36.200
Of course, of course you did, Margaret, that list. I

515
00:26:36.359 --> 00:26:37.000
gave you that.

516
00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:39.559
List, Sogeant, it's on my desk, sir, I'm sure most

517
00:26:39.559 --> 00:26:41.680
of the items in this closet were on it.

518
00:26:41.759 --> 00:26:48.359
Spencer, you were a burglar, technically, yes, she needed clothes, Marty.

519
00:26:48.519 --> 00:26:49.880
That girl she's a fantasy.

520
00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:52.799
No, no, not Peggy. All right, look for reasons that

521
00:26:52.799 --> 00:26:55.519
I may never understand. You feel you wasted your life,

522
00:26:55.799 --> 00:26:57.920
so you fantasized a way to go back to start over.

523
00:26:58.400 --> 00:27:03.839
It was no fantasyll it wasn't. You were sorry you

524
00:27:03.880 --> 00:27:06.960
married Margaret, which all by himself proves that you're insane. Spence,

525
00:27:07.160 --> 00:27:08.960
you created this Peggy and you had a dresser in

526
00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:10.400
a period of twenty five years ago.

527
00:27:10.640 --> 00:27:13.039
There is no Peggy. This whole thing happened in your mind.

528
00:27:12.920 --> 00:27:13.759
Thank you, Lieutenant.

529
00:27:14.480 --> 00:27:15.319
That's sir.

530
00:27:16.400 --> 00:27:17.279
That was from the lab.

531
00:27:17.559 --> 00:27:19.160
They scraped some grass samples from.

532
00:27:19.079 --> 00:27:21.839
A skirt in the closet and it's been identified as

533
00:27:22.119 --> 00:27:23.480
Duke of Wentworth Tescue.

534
00:27:23.880 --> 00:27:25.519
It's a new kind of seed, just been.

535
00:27:25.400 --> 00:27:27.759
Planted for the first time well about a month ago,

536
00:27:27.920 --> 00:27:30.319
which means somebody wearing this skirt was sitting in the

537
00:27:30.359 --> 00:27:32.799
grass and Benton Park very recently.

538
00:27:35.440 --> 00:27:38.920
You figure if a man's been married for twenty three years,

539
00:27:39.039 --> 00:27:42.200
he may have a tendency to fantasize a bit. But

540
00:27:42.319 --> 00:27:46.200
Spencer Chadwick has created more than an illusion. He has

541
00:27:46.240 --> 00:27:51.960
brought forth flesh and blood, particularly blood. We'll be back

542
00:27:52.000 --> 00:28:03.400
shortly with Act three.

543
00:28:04.200 --> 00:28:04.920
It was all right.

544
00:28:05.000 --> 00:28:08.000
While Peggy was only an illusion, she was Spencer Chadwick's

545
00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:12.720
private affair. But a living Peggy or even a dead Peggy,

546
00:28:13.000 --> 00:28:16.519
there's a serious mayor for police, Chief Inspector Faraday Spence,

547
00:28:16.519 --> 00:28:18.839
make it easy for all of us. Tell me who

548
00:28:18.880 --> 00:28:23.599
is Peggy or who was Peggy? We can find out, Spence.

549
00:28:23.640 --> 00:28:26.160
We can check with the neighbors, the janitor. Circulate your

550
00:28:26.160 --> 00:28:28.039
picture in the neighborhood. Ask people if they've seen you

551
00:28:28.079 --> 00:28:31.000
around with a girl. You'll never find her. Don't say

552
00:28:31.039 --> 00:28:33.680
that it's virtually impossible for a person to disappear without

553
00:28:33.680 --> 00:28:37.759
a trace. I still say you'll never find her. Damn it, Spence,

554
00:28:37.799 --> 00:28:39.799
I can't get used to it. You and Margaret, and

555
00:28:39.839 --> 00:28:41.319
then you and this Peggy. How could you live with

556
00:28:41.400 --> 00:28:43.400
both of them? Didn't things get rough at home? Yes?

557
00:28:43.880 --> 00:28:45.200
Well what brought on the showdown?

558
00:28:46.200 --> 00:28:49.799
Well, after a while we couldn't go anywhere without Margaret

559
00:28:49.960 --> 00:28:51.839
seeing her.

560
00:28:53.559 --> 00:28:57.599
Yeah about Spence.

561
00:28:58.920 --> 00:29:01.039
Again with the girls.

562
00:29:01.039 --> 00:29:03.319
You've been looking at you all afternoon, Oh Margaret, Margaret,

563
00:29:03.359 --> 00:29:03.759
believe me.

564
00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:05.680
You invite her down here. I shall have a better

565
00:29:05.759 --> 00:29:08.759
view for marbih Margaret. The reason we shouldn't go behave.

566
00:29:08.559 --> 00:29:09.640
In a civilized manner.

567
00:29:09.960 --> 00:29:21.240
Introduce Margaret. I never saw that girl before in my life. Margaret,

568
00:29:21.400 --> 00:29:22.400
you're staring.

569
00:29:24.480 --> 00:29:27.039
Walk girls been staring at you all Leave.

570
00:29:26.880 --> 00:29:34.720
Me, Margaret, Margaret, believe me, wherever we'd go, there'd be

571
00:29:34.920 --> 00:29:39.079
no peace. She always suspected somebody. Last week, it even

572
00:29:39.079 --> 00:29:42.200
happened when we were playing golf with you and Henrietta.

573
00:29:43.880 --> 00:29:45.640
You're up, Margaret, I've used.

574
00:29:45.480 --> 00:29:46.359
A three would on this whole.

575
00:29:46.440 --> 00:29:46.799
Margaret.

576
00:29:47.039 --> 00:29:50.640
All right, Oh too bad.

577
00:29:51.079 --> 00:29:53.680
Well you go up there and show me how Marty.

578
00:29:53.599 --> 00:29:55.279
You rushed the shot, you lifted your head.

579
00:29:55.400 --> 00:29:56.839
I really don't care about golf.

580
00:29:57.519 --> 00:29:59.119
You made the date with Marty and Henriette.

581
00:29:59.200 --> 00:30:03.920
We simply can't rop circulation. Spencer, that girl in the

582
00:30:03.960 --> 00:30:04.920
foursome behind.

583
00:30:04.680 --> 00:30:11.480
Us, Margaret to Margaret, she's not the one Spencer.

584
00:30:11.519 --> 00:30:12.240
Where were you?

585
00:30:12.680 --> 00:30:13.440
Oh he had a meeting.

586
00:30:13.920 --> 00:30:17.319
Oh well we progress. It used to be you didn't know.

587
00:30:17.359 --> 00:30:20.759
You can remember, and now at least you're courteous enough

588
00:30:20.799 --> 00:30:21.519
to lie to me.

589
00:30:22.359 --> 00:30:24.279
You've been drinking, Margaret, Yes, yes, that's true.

590
00:30:24.359 --> 00:30:25.119
I have been drinking.

591
00:30:25.279 --> 00:30:27.000
Margaret. It's not good for you.

592
00:30:27.119 --> 00:30:29.839
Oh, I don't know. It's considered that drinking is not

593
00:30:29.920 --> 00:30:34.880
good for me. I won't fight that. However, what you

594
00:30:34.920 --> 00:30:38.640
are doing that's good for me, Although I must say

595
00:30:38.640 --> 00:30:41.240
you're treating me nicer these days. You started off by

596
00:30:41.279 --> 00:30:43.759
asking who are you? As if you didn't know me,

597
00:30:43.839 --> 00:30:48.480
and now at least you don't ask. The phone rang

598
00:30:48.519 --> 00:30:50.400
today and I answered it and the line was dead.

599
00:30:51.640 --> 00:30:52.920
What's going to happen, Spence?

600
00:30:54.480 --> 00:30:56.680
I intend to go away with her.

601
00:30:57.319 --> 00:31:03.079
Well, finally you've admitted it. You are having an affair. Yes,

602
00:31:03.319 --> 00:31:03.960
who's the woman?

603
00:31:04.160 --> 00:31:04.319
Who?

604
00:31:04.559 --> 00:31:04.720
Yes?

605
00:31:04.799 --> 00:31:08.200
Who? I'm not sure you'd want to know?

606
00:31:08.319 --> 00:31:09.240
I have a right to know?

607
00:31:10.319 --> 00:31:12.440
Well, perhaps you do. Who is she?

608
00:31:12.559 --> 00:31:13.079
Spencer?

609
00:31:15.240 --> 00:31:23.519
She's you? Me? Yes, Margaret? The girl is you? What

610
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:25.960
kind of No? No, no, no, no, that's not quite right.

611
00:31:26.079 --> 00:31:26.839
She isn't you.

612
00:31:26.880 --> 00:31:28.680
And what we're trying to say she was you?

613
00:31:29.720 --> 00:31:33.799
She isn't Margaret Chadwick. She was Peggy wing right.

614
00:31:34.839 --> 00:31:37.759
Spencer, don't look at me like that. I'm scared.

615
00:31:38.119 --> 00:31:40.599
Do you want me to prove it to you? Come

616
00:31:40.640 --> 00:31:43.200
with me, Come with me right now.

617
00:31:43.480 --> 00:31:46.720
This is what doctor Burbick was concerned about. Spencer. It's

618
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:49.480
no disgrace to have a breakdown, it's no shame to

619
00:31:49.599 --> 00:31:51.160
need psychiatric.

620
00:31:50.559 --> 00:31:54.960
No, no, we're past all that marked. Come with me.

621
00:31:55.759 --> 00:31:57.759
I want you to meet Peggy.

622
00:31:59.000 --> 00:32:02.000
Come with me, an you come with me. You come

623
00:32:02.039 --> 00:32:03.200
with me to doctor Berry.

624
00:32:03.519 --> 00:32:07.799
You know, Margaret, people like you have one answer. Whenever

625
00:32:07.839 --> 00:32:11.240
you're up against something you don't understand, you have one answer.

626
00:32:11.759 --> 00:32:14.720
Whenever your face with something that's beyond your experience, you

627
00:32:14.880 --> 00:32:19.599
have one answer. See a doctor that solves everything, that

628
00:32:19.640 --> 00:32:22.519
takes care of everybody. And it never occurs to you

629
00:32:22.839 --> 00:32:28.000
that yours might just possibly be the wrong answer. Now,

630
00:32:28.039 --> 00:32:31.240
why are you so sure of yourself? Margaret? Why are

631
00:32:31.240 --> 00:32:35.640
you so sure that I'm the one who's wrong. Come

632
00:32:35.680 --> 00:32:41.279
with me, Margaret, I want you to meet Peggy or

633
00:32:41.319 --> 00:32:52.359
are you afraid? Does it look somebody? Margaret Skims? Is

634
00:32:52.400 --> 00:32:52.799
it pretty?

635
00:32:52.799 --> 00:32:56.400
Two Bit and Boulevard. It's our first address I remember?

636
00:32:56.599 --> 00:33:00.799
Do you remember the apartment number three free?

637
00:33:01.440 --> 00:33:03.240
Oh, don't tell me it's still there.

638
00:33:04.440 --> 00:33:05.240
See for yourself.

639
00:33:14.759 --> 00:33:20.119
How did you first table? And this bronze candlestick on

640
00:33:20.200 --> 00:33:27.519
our first wedding present for my brother? These clothes, my clothes?

641
00:33:27.559 --> 00:33:28.440
How did you get there?

642
00:33:29.200 --> 00:33:33.039
They're here because they're Peggy's clothes. Oh?

643
00:33:33.079 --> 00:33:35.519
Look, stand for Lydia Carter's skirt. Oh you love me

644
00:33:35.559 --> 00:33:35.720
in that?

645
00:33:36.319 --> 00:33:36.599
You know that?

646
00:33:36.720 --> 00:33:38.720
Stars come back? I want to put it on.

647
00:33:39.440 --> 00:33:41.799
Do you remember what we used to do?

648
00:33:42.480 --> 00:33:44.799
And then we'd go for a walk in the park,

649
00:33:45.559 --> 00:33:46.519
dinner at Luigi's.

650
00:33:46.559 --> 00:33:48.200
We never had dinner at Luigi's.

651
00:33:48.200 --> 00:33:50.079
That's right, we couldn't afford.

652
00:33:49.759 --> 00:33:53.039
It, and by the time we could, we weren't living

653
00:33:53.039 --> 00:33:53.599
here anymore.

654
00:33:53.640 --> 00:33:54.960
We stopped at the burger shop.

655
00:33:55.759 --> 00:33:57.680
What's tonight Thursday?

656
00:33:58.000 --> 00:33:59.920
That means it's a free concert in the park.

657
00:34:00.039 --> 00:34:01.599
And then free dancing.

658
00:34:01.680 --> 00:34:18.400
Oh, let's go, Spence, let's do it all again. I

659
00:34:18.519 --> 00:34:22.039
never realized how much fun we had in those days.

660
00:34:22.960 --> 00:34:28.800
They were they were great days. Peggy, Peggy, huh.

661
00:34:29.760 --> 00:34:32.880
I always like Peggy better. And somewhere along the line,

662
00:34:32.920 --> 00:34:36.599
you stop calling me Peggy? When exactly did you stop

663
00:34:36.679 --> 00:34:37.519
calling me Peggy?

664
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:39.920
When you became Margaret?

665
00:34:41.079 --> 00:34:46.440
I always wondered about that. How did I become Margaret? Why?

666
00:34:47.079 --> 00:34:51.880
Take a look around, see, Peggy, All the bags, the

667
00:34:51.920 --> 00:34:56.760
trunk they packed for the trip, the trip, the trip

668
00:34:56.599 --> 00:35:00.960
to Oh. Oh, yes, we were all oh set to go?

669
00:35:01.719 --> 00:35:07.039
Yes you remember, yes, As a matter of fact, you

670
00:35:07.119 --> 00:35:11.880
were a little bit sick from the shots, remember, remember?

671
00:35:14.000 --> 00:35:14.360
Yes?

672
00:35:15.880 --> 00:35:17.559
And then the fellowphone rang.

673
00:35:19.119 --> 00:35:19.679
The phone?

674
00:35:19.880 --> 00:35:24.440
Yes, yes, the phone rang? It was it? Why? Yes?

675
00:35:24.480 --> 00:35:25.639
If it was my mother?

676
00:35:26.679 --> 00:35:32.360
Yes, yes it was your mother. Answer the phone, Go ahead,

677
00:35:32.360 --> 00:35:34.559
go ahead and answer it. You answered it that night.

678
00:35:36.199 --> 00:35:44.599
No, yes, yes, mother, Oh no, all right, all right,

679
00:35:44.639 --> 00:35:46.079
we'll go there right away.

680
00:35:47.280 --> 00:35:48.039
What is it, Peggy?

681
00:35:48.159 --> 00:35:50.000
My dad he's had a stroke.

682
00:35:50.599 --> 00:35:50.960
How bad?

683
00:35:51.000 --> 00:35:55.000
We don't know yet, Oh Spencer, I don't think we can.

684
00:35:55.159 --> 00:35:58.360
I mean I can't leave mother alone right now.

685
00:35:59.079 --> 00:35:59.559
We won't.

686
00:36:00.440 --> 00:36:04.559
Oh Spence, I knew you'd understand.

687
00:36:04.679 --> 00:36:07.719
That's when you became Margaret. That's when you are no

688
00:36:07.760 --> 00:36:11.119
longer my wife, but your father's daughter. Take off the skirt,

689
00:36:12.079 --> 00:36:15.440
leave it here, go home. It belongs to Peggy, Spence.

690
00:36:15.440 --> 00:36:17.480
What's that with you? I'm Peggy.

691
00:36:17.599 --> 00:36:19.719
That night was the start of the start of war,

692
00:36:19.880 --> 00:36:22.320
the start of a campaign to mold me into the

693
00:36:22.440 --> 00:36:25.840
kind of man you had in mind, the man who

694
00:36:25.840 --> 00:36:28.920
would enjoy the kind of existence you always had and

695
00:36:29.079 --> 00:36:31.639
always wanted. Safe, comfortable, secure.

696
00:36:31.760 --> 00:36:33.599
All you were asked to do was to help my father,

697
00:36:33.679 --> 00:36:35.679
who was deafly ill. Who else could have done it,

698
00:36:35.760 --> 00:36:39.079
my brother? It was supposed to just be a temporary arrangement.

699
00:36:39.599 --> 00:36:40.639
But it suited you.

700
00:36:40.719 --> 00:36:44.119
Stance, it suited you. I started making the kind of

701
00:36:44.119 --> 00:36:46.960
money your folks never dreamed of. I built an empire.

702
00:36:47.440 --> 00:36:51.360
I never wanted it. You you wanted it. You wanted it

703
00:36:51.400 --> 00:36:55.719
so badly, you stopped being Peggy. You wentce somewhere else.

704
00:36:56.119 --> 00:36:59.480
It became lost, but not me. I'm I'm not lost.

705
00:37:00.159 --> 00:37:02.719
I found my way back, and when I got there,

706
00:37:03.800 --> 00:37:09.920
I found Peggy again. No, take off that scratch and

707
00:37:10.000 --> 00:37:10.960
give it back to Peggy.

708
00:37:11.119 --> 00:37:14.719
Spencer. I listened to you, now you listen to me.

709
00:37:15.000 --> 00:37:19.000
I've been listening to you for twenty three years, and

710
00:37:19.079 --> 00:37:22.159
now we've come to the end. The bags are packed

711
00:37:22.440 --> 00:37:26.840
and it's not too late. We're leaving for Tibet. Peggy

712
00:37:27.000 --> 00:37:30.800
and me Peggy Peggy.

713
00:37:31.639 --> 00:37:37.079
Yes, Spencer, DIY Spence. Get this straight. I'm Peggy. Don't

714
00:37:37.119 --> 00:37:38.159
listen to her, Spence.

715
00:37:38.599 --> 00:37:40.119
She was always out to destroy you.

716
00:37:40.639 --> 00:37:41.440
She almost did.

717
00:37:41.599 --> 00:37:42.360
You came back to me.

718
00:37:43.000 --> 00:37:48.039
I'm Peggy, the only Peggy you have sys trying to

719
00:37:48.079 --> 00:37:53.079
stop you. We are going to tbet that chance you'll

720
00:37:53.119 --> 00:37:55.920
take that appointment from Saturfield. That refusal will just a ploy.

721
00:37:56.159 --> 00:37:56.760
You know it.

722
00:37:57.000 --> 00:37:57.719
He knows it.

723
00:37:57.760 --> 00:38:01.159
Shut up, Margaret, shut up, shut up.

724
00:38:01.840 --> 00:38:06.880
I didn't destroy you, you destroyed me. To cares, then

725
00:38:07.960 --> 00:38:12.679
go ahead, live with this fantasy of yours, This Keggy

726
00:38:12.760 --> 00:38:15.360
who rewrites history, she's all yours.

727
00:38:16.639 --> 00:38:19.920
My skirt take off that skirt.

728
00:38:20.199 --> 00:38:23.199
It's mine. It's all I want from you for twenty

729
00:38:23.360 --> 00:38:27.880
three years of marriage. Her out of here, She'll tell

730
00:38:27.920 --> 00:38:31.519
everybody about us. You'll put you away, then get away

731
00:38:31.519 --> 00:38:35.239
from that door. No, Spence, go away from me.

732
00:38:36.760 --> 00:38:37.719
You won't get out that way.

733
00:38:38.679 --> 00:38:40.199
You'll hit you with this.

734
00:38:41.679 --> 00:38:43.079
You you are.

735
00:38:45.760 --> 00:39:03.119
A knight. Hey, Haggy, Heggy, where are you? Hay you

736
00:39:03.119 --> 00:39:17.400
you've killed us boats? Oh, Margaret ah h mugerant h

737
00:39:25.639 --> 00:39:25.920
h h.

738
00:39:27.920 --> 00:39:30.360
Chief inspect Office speaking.

739
00:39:31.719 --> 00:39:48.119
Sergeant. This is Spencer Chadwick. Hi, I just merchered my wife. Well,

740
00:39:48.159 --> 00:39:51.719
as they say, all of us are two people. One

741
00:39:51.800 --> 00:39:54.320
is the person we think we are, and the other

742
00:39:54.440 --> 00:39:57.599
is the person we really are. And the secret of

743
00:39:57.639 --> 00:40:00.400
a long happy life is to make sure or the

744
00:40:00.440 --> 00:40:03.760
twain never meet. I'll be back shortly.

745
00:40:07.039 --> 00:40:08.599
This is w Buwar, New York.

746
00:40:08.719 --> 00:40:23.239
Your sishing for mystery hitter. Well, the jury's still out.

747
00:40:23.920 --> 00:40:27.079
Oh not on Spencer Chadwick. With him, it was open

748
00:40:27.119 --> 00:40:31.119
and shot, but on the basic idea can you go back?

749
00:40:31.960 --> 00:40:35.159
Can you do it again? Well? To end on a

750
00:40:35.199 --> 00:40:38.599
non controversial note, here is something everybody.

751
00:40:38.119 --> 00:40:38.840
Can do again.

754
00:40:50.239 --> 00:40:53.480
Gil Mack. The entire production was under the direction of

755
00:40:53.519 --> 00:40:59.199
Hyman Brown. Now a preview of our next tale. Do

756
00:40:59.239 --> 00:41:00.719
you know what I'm going to do, Laurie.

757
00:41:01.400 --> 00:41:03.840
I Am going to turn this car right around and

758
00:41:03.880 --> 00:41:04.800
head back to the city.

759
00:41:04.960 --> 00:41:09.360
Oh no, George, please talk to we all.

760
00:41:09.519 --> 00:41:17.719
You hear something like ring ring open Oldtory rhymes to

761
00:41:18.760 --> 00:41:23.920
we all fall down like a piece of weather. It

762
00:41:23.920 --> 00:41:25.800
sounds like a George.

763
00:41:26.559 --> 00:41:27.199
I'm getting out.

764
00:41:28.199 --> 00:41:30.760
Don't leave me, George. I'm coming with you.

765
00:41:31.159 --> 00:41:33.920
Okay, but stay close to me. Radio Mystery Theater was

766
00:41:33.920 --> 00:41:37.199
sponsored in part by the Kellogg Company, makers of Kellogg's

767
00:41:37.199 --> 00:41:38.280
special k Cereal.

768
00:41:39.519 --> 00:41:40.079
This is E. G.

771
00:42:30.800 --> 00:42:44.599
AH.

772
00:42:44.639 --> 00:42:48.800
The preceding Mystery Theater program was furnished by the CBS

773
00:42:48.880 --> 00:42:51.039
Radio Network.

774
00:42:53.000 --> 00:43:00.559
I suppose in some ways it escape, you know, going

775
00:43:00.599 --> 00:43:06.960
from one state to another. What's that? Oh no, no,

776
00:43:07.199 --> 00:43:14.239
We'll you'll understand, but not not very sooth. And that's good.

777
00:43:14.760 --> 00:43:23.360
That's very good. When I remember back to before, when

778
00:43:23.559 --> 00:43:33.559
things were simpler, happier. Maybe the thing that always stressed

779
00:43:33.599 --> 00:43:37.280
me out was it was just money, money.

780
00:43:37.119 --> 00:43:40.960
Money, lights out everybody.

781
00:43:48.639 --> 00:43:57.159
It is later then, you.

782
00:43:58.960 --> 00:43:59.159
Thing.

783
00:44:05.199 --> 00:44:07.920
This is our jobler, bringing you another in our series

784
00:44:07.960 --> 00:44:11.719
of stories of the unusual. And once again we caution you.

785
00:44:12.079 --> 00:44:15.480
These lights out stories are definitely not for the timid soul.

786
00:44:15.960 --> 00:44:19.760
So we tell you calmly and very sincerely, if you frighten,

787
00:44:19.840 --> 00:44:22.119
easily turn off your radio now.

788
00:44:27.119 --> 00:44:35.480
Two eight cents, four cents fall.

789
00:44:37.559 --> 00:44:55.239
Sick two dollars, three dollars, four dollars, five dollars.

790
00:44:54.480 --> 00:45:18.320
Good, three minutes four million by money that you're Tony,

791
00:45:18.400 --> 00:45:20.119
that's that's wrong with the world today.

792
00:45:20.360 --> 00:45:24.320
Money? What are you talking about? It said? Look Tony

793
00:45:24.599 --> 00:45:26.800
in that to pull it both, I had the devil

794
00:45:26.840 --> 00:45:29.280
with the body. What do you say about the money?

795
00:45:29.360 --> 00:45:29.559
Hey?

796
00:45:29.599 --> 00:45:32.280
You said that morning? That's that what's wrong that world?

797
00:45:33.000 --> 00:45:34.559
Tell us get it that the money, and then they

798
00:45:34.599 --> 00:45:35.480
want more of it.

799
00:45:35.719 --> 00:45:38.239
They get that and they want more and puysume that's

800
00:45:38.280 --> 00:45:39.679
all they think about this morning?

801
00:45:39.880 --> 00:45:43.719
Morning, Morney, what do you think about it? Morning?

802
00:45:44.159 --> 00:45:44.239
So?

803
00:45:44.320 --> 00:45:45.159
What are you talking about?

804
00:45:45.320 --> 00:45:45.599
You?

805
00:45:45.599 --> 00:45:48.400
You don't understood, Tony, Hey, you don't understand yourself all

806
00:45:48.400 --> 00:45:49.119
the time you talk.

807
00:45:49.719 --> 00:45:50.719
Go let me long on.

808
00:45:50.880 --> 00:45:52.199
No, Tony, don't get sore.

809
00:45:52.480 --> 00:45:52.719
That's on.

810
00:45:52.840 --> 00:45:53.360
They're talking.

811
00:45:54.079 --> 00:45:56.639
That's what's wrong. It don't make no sense. Money is

812
00:45:56.639 --> 00:46:01.599
what's wrong with the world. You fully crazy night, No

813
00:46:01.800 --> 00:46:04.119
bug him in the I in Tracy, I tell you

814
00:46:04.159 --> 00:46:04.760
a the intract.

815
00:46:04.840 --> 00:46:05.880
The man who works.

816
00:46:05.679 --> 00:46:08.000
Forward with his hands and don't think about money all

817
00:46:08.000 --> 00:46:09.440
the time, can't have any want to have.

818
00:46:11.440 --> 00:46:12.519
What do you want to happen?

819
00:46:13.119 --> 00:46:15.760
A phone for me? A little form?

820
00:46:16.480 --> 00:46:20.199
What I'm saying that a little stock form someplace gid

821
00:46:20.360 --> 00:46:22.400
like Wisconsin or maybe Mannesota.

822
00:46:22.719 --> 00:46:29.920
Whis fun?

823
00:46:32.239 --> 00:46:36.360
That's so funny having money for fourteen years, I work

824
00:46:36.400 --> 00:46:38.280
on the ship and I have to save my money

825
00:46:38.360 --> 00:46:38.960
for form.

826
00:46:39.559 --> 00:46:41.840
I don't like the money. I used to want the

827
00:46:41.960 --> 00:46:44.480
farm for my wife and my kids. And then yeah,

828
00:46:44.519 --> 00:46:47.000
I know not in twenty nine the bank should go

829
00:46:47.119 --> 00:46:48.840
busting your back a ways that day.

830
00:46:48.960 --> 00:46:52.039
Actually, I tell you, Tony, at that and worked so

831
00:46:52.159 --> 00:46:53.599
hard in my wife.

832
00:46:53.239 --> 00:46:55.480
And my kids may wait for me to bring the

833
00:46:55.559 --> 00:46:58.039
money to buy the form so they could all be together.

834
00:46:58.360 --> 00:46:58.840
Shut up.

835
00:46:59.119 --> 00:47:00.920
I don't know why smart guy like me waste the

836
00:47:00.960 --> 00:47:03.320
time with a door bell like you, just because I

837
00:47:03.360 --> 00:47:04.400
work on the same ship with you.

838
00:47:04.480 --> 00:47:06.119
I mean, I gotta listen to you shut off your

839
00:47:06.159 --> 00:47:06.920
mouth all the time.

840
00:47:07.039 --> 00:47:10.960
But they works so hard, so hot. It'll work for

841
00:47:11.159 --> 00:47:15.639
make many rich. It's the break, Yeah, a break. I'm

842
00:47:15.719 --> 00:47:18.280
the best dead water dive in a hole Pacific, so what.

843
00:47:19.280 --> 00:47:20.039
Never get the break?

844
00:47:20.119 --> 00:47:22.199
So I'm still eating a ship, A slap and a

845
00:47:22.239 --> 00:47:25.039
walk in the docks. If you Tony got shit, I say,

846
00:47:25.239 --> 00:47:27.719
some day and the man vorks for her, shut up.

847
00:47:28.280 --> 00:47:31.000
You don't know what you talk about it. You gotta

848
00:47:31.079 --> 00:47:33.400
get the door, big door, and you can't get a

849
00:47:33.440 --> 00:47:34.280
big the door with a work.

850
00:47:35.599 --> 00:47:38.039
Some day the breaks she's gonna come my way, and

851
00:47:38.079 --> 00:47:41.199
then Tony's going to be a bigger shot. Tony ain't

852
00:47:41.199 --> 00:47:45.239
gonna take nothing from nobody. I'll grab that dough anyway

853
00:47:45.239 --> 00:47:48.480
I can get it. You know, Tony Morant, everybody in

854
00:47:48.519 --> 00:47:51.440
the honors don't make a feller happy. And you're lunk

855
00:47:51.480 --> 00:47:54.840
shit telling you when I get a chance, I'm gonna

856
00:47:54.880 --> 00:47:56.840

857
00:47:57.000 --> 00:48:01.840
my brother, I tell you, hold on, no bumming.

858
00:48:01.599 --> 00:48:05.519
Around the door. Yeah yeah, officer, Lego, lego fat what's

860
00:48:08.679 --> 00:48:11.679

862
00:48:14.320 --> 00:48:15.719

863
00:48:15.760 --> 00:48:17.280
be doing all his diving in the ting.

864
00:48:18.039 --> 00:48:20.800
No, no, believe me, officer Tony, he don't mean nothing.

865
00:48:20.840 --> 00:48:22.400

869
00:48:27.719 --> 00:48:29.239

870
00:48:29.280 --> 00:48:30.280

871
00:48:32.800 --> 00:48:35.039

876
00:48:46.400 --> 00:48:49.159
Don't make no difference. But I didn't say that, Tony.

877
00:48:49.239 --> 00:48:52.920
I said that the devil will work money. That's what

878
00:48:52.960 --> 00:48:55.079
you got to get in the old way. But Kenny

879
00:48:55.960 --> 00:48:58.039

1027
00:56:48.199 --> 00:57:01.119
In the stage, Toney, thank you smarty. Waiting for somebody else, Tony,

1028
00:57:01.559 --> 00:57:02.400

Me help you. Hey go ahead, don't need no help,

1030
00:57:05.400 --> 00:57:05.760

1031
00:57:06.280 --> 00:57:08.679
Oh Tony, Tony, night after.

1032
00:57:08.719 --> 00:57:09.639
Night, go in me.

1033
00:57:09.800 --> 00:57:12.719
I'm all right, great guys me.

1034
00:57:14.320 --> 00:57:16.400
Spending all your money on those drunken fools.

1035
00:57:16.519 --> 00:57:21.519
Shut up your mind, careful. I told you I don't

1036
00:57:21.559 --> 00:57:25.639
need no help from nobody. Tony takes what he wants.

1037
00:57:25.719 --> 00:57:27.760
He shut the door.

1038
00:57:28.360 --> 00:57:37.760
Yeah, I'll come here and give a great the guy kissing. No, no, wait, Tony, listen.

1039
00:57:38.320 --> 00:57:39.800
I listened to Tony.

1040
00:57:39.880 --> 00:57:41.880
The man said that man.

1041
00:57:43.320 --> 00:57:45.039
What the man that was here?

1042
00:57:45.440 --> 00:57:47.760
He's been here a dozen times since midnight looking.

1043
00:57:47.599 --> 00:57:51.400
For you midnight? Oh, I see what did you want?

1044
00:57:51.599 --> 00:57:54.119
I don't know what he wanted you? Oh, Tony, I

1045
00:57:54.599 --> 00:57:55.280
was afraid?

1046
00:57:57.119 --> 00:57:58.360
Why why was she Afraidy?

1047
00:57:59.079 --> 00:57:59.239
Well?

1048
00:58:00.280 --> 00:58:04.360
H whoever wel why was you afraid?

1049
00:58:04.440 --> 00:58:04.599
Well?

1050
00:58:04.639 --> 00:58:06.199
He he was so strange.

1051
00:58:06.320 --> 00:58:07.920
He had it so funny.

1052
00:58:08.519 --> 00:58:09.719
What you mean.

1053
00:58:11.199 --> 00:58:11.519
Funny?

1054
00:58:11.840 --> 00:58:17.360
But he spoke so funny, as if as if his

1055
00:58:17.480 --> 00:58:21.960
mouth was full of water. Yeah, you know that makes

1056
00:58:22.119 --> 00:58:22.840
joke with Donny.

1057
00:58:23.559 --> 00:58:25.119
No, I'm not fooling, really, I'm not.

1058
00:58:25.639 --> 00:58:28.119
He said that he said some thing.

1059
00:58:28.320 --> 00:58:30.679
Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm trying to tell you. He said,

1060
00:58:31.079 --> 00:58:31.719
tell him?

1061
00:58:32.960 --> 00:58:34.199
But what what what he say?

1062
00:58:34.360 --> 00:58:34.480
Well?

1063
00:58:34.639 --> 00:58:36.360
I couldn't hardly understand him.

1064
00:58:36.400 --> 00:58:37.519
He talked so funny.

1065
00:58:38.199 --> 00:58:42.119
But I think he said tell him, tell him I

1066
00:58:42.400 --> 00:58:45.920
was here. And and then I think he said the.

1067
00:58:46.000 --> 00:58:50.599
Farmer he did did the farm.

1068
00:58:51.039 --> 00:58:55.480
Yeah, yeah, that's what Tony. Tony was.

1069
00:58:58.159 --> 00:59:03.519
What he looks like, don't what he looks a b Well,

1070
00:59:03.639 --> 00:59:07.599
he was tall and and he he looked like a sailor.

1071
00:59:08.320 --> 00:59:13.280
And I think his clothes were wet. Oh, Tony, that's

1072
00:59:13.360 --> 00:59:15.239
him again. That's the way he knocked before.

1073
00:59:16.239 --> 00:59:16.519
Tony.

1074
00:59:16.559 --> 00:59:19.639
What is this you you went to the door. I'm scared, Tony.

1075
00:59:19.719 --> 00:59:21.119
You went to go away?

1076
00:59:22.360 --> 00:59:25.039
Tony's dan staring at the door, like, can't you scared me?

1077
00:59:25.159 --> 00:59:30.000
Don't do it? You go away? You that huh that

1078
00:59:30.199 --> 00:59:30.880
you hear me dead?

1079
00:59:31.519 --> 00:59:35.679
I killed six months ago. I tore you on the water,

1080
00:59:35.840 --> 00:59:42.320
tossed him up from spare my wife. But you're on

1081
00:59:42.480 --> 00:59:42.960
scale of me.

1082
00:59:44.719 --> 00:59:49.199
You kill watched him go away from the door.

1083
00:59:49.360 --> 01:00:00.320
Shoot fuck it, Connie, Connie and one shoot shoot through

1084
01:00:00.320 --> 01:00:00.599
the door.

1085
01:00:01.519 --> 01:00:03.760
Con me, get up, tell me.

1086
01:00:04.360 --> 01:00:07.039
Open over early.

1087
01:00:07.079 --> 01:00:07.880
I don't want to kill you.

1088
01:00:09.800 --> 01:00:09.920
Him.

1089
01:00:13.400 --> 01:00:17.480
He'll swashen you. You'll think you've got me hyt you

1090
01:00:17.639 --> 01:00:18.840
think you've got me in a hot and.

1091
01:00:18.880 --> 01:00:23.440
Say that I have to be sweetly sweet. You forget

1092
01:00:23.519 --> 01:00:27.559
the pass can't be so how about your food?

1093
01:00:37.960 --> 01:00:38.480
Listen to Mike.

1094
01:00:39.320 --> 01:00:40.119
You gotta help me.

1095
01:00:40.559 --> 01:00:43.599
You got oh, take it easy, Tony, take it easy.

1096
01:00:43.920 --> 01:00:46.800
We got in a tommy. You shoot me down like

1097
01:00:46.840 --> 01:00:47.119
a dog.

1098
01:00:47.800 --> 01:00:49.719
You killed one of them. What do you expect I

1099
01:00:50.119 --> 01:00:53.079
kill them all? Nobody can't stopping me. Nobody.

1100
01:00:56.519 --> 01:01:01.480
Oh my, you're my friend. You gotta get me out

1101
01:01:01.519 --> 01:01:01.840
of down.

1102
01:01:02.679 --> 01:01:06.320
How much door you got You'll lie in your teeth.

1103
01:01:07.079 --> 01:01:09.599
You won the Sweet States and Prisco, didn't you. I'm

1104
01:01:09.639 --> 01:01:12.880
gonna tell you my d Listen to me cop killer.

1105
01:01:13.639 --> 01:01:16.679
They got every road, every depot, every dock in this

1106
01:01:16.800 --> 01:01:20.039
town covered. If it's free you want to get, and

1107
01:01:20.159 --> 01:01:22.599
it's money, it's going to cost you every cent you got.

1108
01:01:23.559 --> 01:01:27.960
You've kept me out so far out there ain't a

1109
01:01:28.079 --> 01:01:32.440
cup in the world can get you. Listen At midnight tonight,

1110
01:01:33.119 --> 01:01:35.480
the SS probus is pulling out to go down through

1111
01:01:35.519 --> 01:01:38.159
the canal and then over to the coast of island

1112
01:01:38.480 --> 01:01:39.519
to go hunting for gold.

1113
01:01:40.039 --> 01:01:40.320
Gold.

1114
01:01:42.119 --> 01:01:45.159
Watch your tongue, but gold, I said in gold. It

1115
01:01:45.280 --> 01:01:50.320
is only they're going under the sea for it. You

1116
01:01:50.519 --> 01:01:54.400
heard me under the sea A million dollars in gold

1117
01:01:54.480 --> 01:01:56.039
in the hold of the time. You're sung by a

1118
01:01:56.119 --> 01:02:00.920
sub and these boys are going there to die for it. Yeah,

1119
01:02:01.960 --> 01:02:04.800
and if you decorate them hugging in front of me

1120
01:02:05.000 --> 01:02:07.840
with every sinker cut in your pocket, you'll.

1121
01:02:07.679 --> 01:02:11.199
Be on board that you you hear that, Swanson, you

1122
01:02:12.440 --> 01:02:16.360
dive in the front goal and Midian dollars and me,

1123
01:02:16.599 --> 01:02:17.920
I'm going to be on the board.

1124
01:02:38.800 --> 01:02:40.119
They want to talk to make happened?

1125
01:02:40.800 --> 01:02:45.760
Yeah, Tony, sit down, she's getting pulled it off outside

1126
01:02:45.800 --> 01:02:46.239
the captain.

1127
01:02:46.760 --> 01:02:49.480
Yeah, that's what I wanted to talk to you about

1128
01:02:51.559 --> 01:02:54.360
while you were sleeping before the rest of the divers

1129
01:02:54.400 --> 01:02:54.920
had a meeting.

1130
01:02:55.239 --> 01:02:55.440
Yeah.

1131
01:02:56.079 --> 01:02:59.360
Yeah, they looked over the weather reports and they decided

1132
01:02:59.400 --> 01:03:02.599
they ain't gonna do no more diving the white belly.

1133
01:03:05.079 --> 01:03:08.400
You mean me, We're gonna turn the black Well.

1134
01:03:08.280 --> 01:03:08.960
What else can I do?

1135
01:03:09.920 --> 01:03:12.400
Three months out here in the open sea, and when

1136
01:03:12.440 --> 01:03:15.239
we finally do okay direct, every mother's son.

1137
01:03:15.159 --> 01:03:17.000
Of them turns chicken on me. So that's notile you

1138
01:03:17.039 --> 01:03:17.639
want to talk.

1139
01:03:17.559 --> 01:03:22.599
To me, because even if you are no good rat,

1140
01:03:23.480 --> 01:03:25.039
you're the best diver of the lot.

1141
01:03:25.639 --> 01:03:26.400
You keep talking.

1142
01:03:27.480 --> 01:03:31.559
Tell me listen under that boy off the stobbard as

1143
01:03:31.639 --> 01:03:33.960
the Tanya with a million dollars in gold bullion in it.

1144
01:03:34.400 --> 01:03:36.960
So good down and get your looks into with Tony,

1145
01:03:37.559 --> 01:03:43.000
and whenever you get half of it yours you mean,

1146
01:03:43.719 --> 01:03:46.920
I'm sure you get half and I'll split the ever

1147
01:03:46.960 --> 01:03:51.440
hap with the crew. Yeah, Tony, a million bucks and

1148
01:03:51.559 --> 01:03:53.480
you'll have half of it. You can do it, Tony,

1149
01:03:53.519 --> 01:03:56.199
you can do it. He you can see if she's

1150
01:03:56.239 --> 01:03:58.719
getting a look. But you never get the pins. They

1151
01:03:58.800 --> 01:03:59.960
tell me you've gone down and rubble.

1152
01:04:00.079 --> 01:04:00.880
What I ever died of?

1153
01:04:00.920 --> 01:04:04.280
What she's called? Now I'm a finish. You're got the

1154
01:04:04.360 --> 01:04:07.239
room with the gold Who knows where she is? Tony, Tony, listen,

1155
01:04:08.039 --> 01:04:11.199
I know just to that golden store. You kind of

1156
01:04:11.239 --> 01:04:11.639
fool me.

1157
01:04:12.000 --> 01:04:13.239
Oh no, this God is my judge.

1158
01:04:13.280 --> 01:04:16.440
I'm telling you the truth. Jake located the room on

1159
01:04:16.599 --> 01:04:17.639
his last time yesterday.

1160
01:04:17.679 --> 01:04:19.079
He told me only me about it.

1161
01:04:19.440 --> 01:04:22.079
So don't you just see, Tony, it's a chance.

1162
01:04:21.920 --> 01:04:22.559
Of a lifetime.

1163
01:04:23.199 --> 01:04:25.119
I got calling up for one more day out here.

1164
01:04:25.800 --> 01:04:27.760
If we turn back, we'll never locate the wreck again.

1165
01:04:27.800 --> 01:04:30.400
The way that sea's running half a million dollars in

1166
01:04:30.440 --> 01:04:32.280
gold for you, Tony, right under your feet.

1167
01:04:33.360 --> 01:04:34.480
Don't be a fool man.

1168
01:04:35.039 --> 01:04:36.639
Take a chance, you go down and try to get it.

1169
01:04:37.199 --> 01:04:43.000
If you win, you've got the world right in your hand. Tony, Well,

1170
01:04:43.800 --> 01:04:50.639
what do you do it? Give away from him? Huh?

1171
01:04:51.480 --> 01:04:51.639
Him?

1172
01:04:52.239 --> 01:04:53.079
Who are you talking about?

1173
01:04:54.000 --> 01:04:54.239
Nose?

1174
01:04:54.280 --> 01:04:56.280
Are talking to you? Why are you sitting there for?

1175
01:04:56.880 --> 01:04:57.480
Get me away?

1176
01:04:58.039 --> 01:05:13.159
Get the pops to car here you Tony, Yeah, you

1177
01:05:13.519 --> 01:05:18.000
have here? You are what is standing there to happen?

1178
01:05:18.159 --> 01:05:22.719
Okay, okay the captain, that's somebody who I ponder to

1179
01:05:22.800 --> 01:05:23.039
keep it.

1180
01:05:23.079 --> 01:05:25.039
In Take three, Holy the man.

1181
01:05:25.119 --> 01:05:28.199
I want the rest to go below or I don't die,

1182
01:05:28.719 --> 01:05:34.159
all right, Tony, human before every one of you.

1183
01:05:35.360 --> 01:05:37.760
Hey, hold up the helmet to what's on the phone?

1184
01:05:38.679 --> 01:05:42.840
Hello, Hello, Hello, Well why aren't that to me? Okay,

1185
01:05:43.000 --> 01:05:49.480
Tony are here you? Okay, that's a bounce. Okay, I'm

1186
01:05:49.480 --> 01:05:51.159
all right with Amadanni.

1187
01:05:51.440 --> 01:05:58.840
Okay, hurry up to your marks there you get them

1188
01:05:58.880 --> 01:06:00.360
parts of time you think about O day.

1189
01:06:02.280 --> 01:06:05.440
Okay, put my other side. Well, watch that the pump

1190
01:06:05.480 --> 01:06:07.119
when I come up and I crop you hard out.

1191
01:06:07.159 --> 01:06:33.360
He has a million dollars as a million dollars me

1192
01:06:35.280 --> 01:06:43.320
water cold, dumb dumb as f million dollars. Yeah, sure,

1193
01:06:43.320 --> 01:06:44.920
I'm all right, Let me alone.

1194
01:06:45.000 --> 01:06:54.440
Okay, dum dum water dog. And he came to me,

1195
01:06:54.719 --> 01:06:58.400
Tony vesta fististy.

1196
01:07:00.039 --> 01:07:09.320
That's me. I'm listen up there on the button. You

1197
01:07:09.360 --> 01:07:10.960
don't hear me, Tony, listen.

1198
01:07:11.199 --> 01:07:14.280
Captain says, hurry up, squall coming up, Tyler.

1199
01:07:14.360 --> 01:07:15.880
Captain, they take me off before.

1200
01:07:15.639 --> 01:07:17.840
I give a a Cigarette's hat.

1201
01:07:23.880 --> 01:07:23.920
Me?

1202
01:07:26.000 --> 01:07:26.800
That's for men?

1203
01:07:28.639 --> 01:07:37.440
He said, God was inside the door. I had the door,

1204
01:07:37.519 --> 01:07:43.679
the captain saying me and the captain of sisty sisty?

1205
01:08:01.800 --> 01:08:04.159
What does he say? He says, to leave him alone.

1206
01:08:04.239 --> 01:08:05.800
He don't want to talk to nobody.

1207
01:08:06.559 --> 01:08:07.320
No good rat.

1208
01:08:07.880 --> 01:08:09.840
I was a fool sending him down and he's on

1209
01:08:10.000 --> 01:08:12.000
the bottom, all right, But what's he doing?

1210
01:08:12.360 --> 01:08:14.480
Has he com the goal? Has he con a strong room?

1211
01:08:15.039 --> 01:08:16.159
Plus us stay down there?

1212
01:08:16.600 --> 01:08:31.960
Talk to Mark talk Tony And captain said he would

1213
01:08:31.960 --> 01:08:32.479
be right.

1214
01:08:34.640 --> 01:08:34.960
Sam.

1215
01:08:39.359 --> 01:08:44.520
The room full of cold and rich. All the money

1216
01:08:44.680 --> 01:08:49.279
work me ty rich rich?

1217
01:08:50.560 --> 01:08:54.680
Yeah, all the money you'll want to told room.

1218
01:08:56.439 --> 01:08:59.960
He's talking. He was a talk.

1219
01:09:00.359 --> 01:09:03.000
What's wrong, Tony? Anything wrong? You are there?

1220
01:09:03.640 --> 01:09:04.760
I tell you I don't want to talk.

1221
01:09:05.319 --> 01:09:07.680
So now you're a listener to me? What you mean?

1222
01:09:07.720 --> 01:09:10.760
All the money I want? What is that that? I

1223
01:09:10.920 --> 01:09:13.760
didn't say that, Tony I've been standing.

1224
01:09:13.479 --> 01:09:15.159
Buy it, stand and buy it.

1225
01:09:15.800 --> 01:09:17.920
Wait, I get up there, show you're standing buy it?

1226
01:09:18.560 --> 01:09:20.960
But I get this hair set connection with my feet.

1227
01:09:22.119 --> 01:09:24.279
I fix you so you don't buy me a No

1228
01:09:25.359 --> 01:09:31.119
why Tony the doin says that. So not talk now

1229
01:09:31.279 --> 01:09:36.199
talk all you want your shelfish? You want here me?

1230
01:09:36.399 --> 01:09:38.600
I they're wrong with my God.

1231
01:09:39.680 --> 01:09:44.039
No knock alone, you up there?

1232
01:09:44.560 --> 01:09:46.399
You stop talking to me, stopping.

1233
01:09:47.720 --> 01:09:50.279
On here? Told me that you.

1234
01:09:52.199 --> 01:09:59.399
Oh you say stapy, hey book connection. Nobody can't talk

1235
01:09:59.479 --> 01:09:59.640
to me.

1236
01:09:59.800 --> 01:10:04.960
No, I I'll talk to your cony. I got much

1237
01:10:05.199 --> 01:10:06.159
to talk to you.

1238
01:10:08.279 --> 01:10:12.960
That's in my head. That's whitish my head, not in

1239
01:10:13.159 --> 01:10:13.720
your head.

1240
01:10:15.000 --> 01:10:23.119
Look look straight ahead, exquish you know me, Tony, Me

1241
01:10:23.399 --> 01:10:29.079
and the water almost a year goes to the window

1242
01:10:29.159 --> 01:10:35.640
and your helmet. Oh you don't like that to see it, Tony.

1243
01:10:36.680 --> 01:10:41.319
My wife, my children, they wouldn't like it either, would

1244
01:10:41.399 --> 01:10:47.399
They told me away? Go ahead you No, don't pay

1245
01:10:47.479 --> 01:10:54.439
in hurry, Tony. We got plenty time, plenty I worked

1246
01:10:54.520 --> 01:10:59.720
for fourteen years, you remember, Tony, fourteen years.

1247
01:11:01.840 --> 01:11:08.079
No, I don't look no more. I youay for you, you.

1248
01:11:11.119 --> 01:11:14.800
My hair, my air. You will take away my life,

1249
01:11:15.159 --> 01:11:19.960
my kids, my life. No, I take a layre there

1250
01:11:20.359 --> 01:11:22.720
you're sure not lay no?

1251
01:11:22.920 --> 01:11:25.880
I think if you'll have nothing, come in with your toy.

1252
01:11:26.000 --> 01:11:27.159
My friends like come in.

1253
01:11:28.720 --> 01:11:32.119
No, no.

1254
01:11:37.319 --> 01:11:43.520
Often listen no, no, take it up? Quick take him

1255
01:11:43.600 --> 01:11:45.880
up there getting.

1256
01:11:46.000 --> 01:11:50.479
Yeah, sure, up plenty. Everything's so careful you don't answer,

1257
01:11:50.800 --> 01:11:53.159
just yelling borry sit on the.

1258
01:11:53.199 --> 01:11:56.279
Right, Captain, What did everything?

1259
01:11:56.439 --> 01:11:56.720
Okay?

1260
01:11:56.800 --> 01:11:57.640
What's be taking out?

1261
01:11:57.720 --> 01:11:58.439
What he's yelling?

1262
01:11:58.680 --> 01:12:00.000
Captain, he's still yelling.

1263
01:12:00.199 --> 01:12:01.279
Call him and quick calling him.

1264
01:12:01.479 --> 01:12:03.640
He can breas No, no, there's no time. But put

1265
01:12:03.720 --> 01:12:05.199
him in the tank when we get him up. Something

1266
01:12:05.239 --> 01:12:07.520
must be wrong. Tell me bunny matter on the phoney

1267
01:12:07.560 --> 01:12:08.960
signally okay on the right line.

1268
01:12:09.319 --> 01:12:10.279
Hurry up, you meant.

1269
01:12:10.159 --> 01:12:22.199
Hurry up, hick harmon, harmon, Harry common step up.

1270
01:12:26.760 --> 01:12:31.680
He's not there. It's not him, it's something else on

1271
01:12:31.840 --> 01:12:37.600
his line. Captain. Look, he's headline. It's been chewed through

1272
01:12:37.680 --> 01:12:42.760
my teeth for what is it? What's tied to the lifeline?

1273
01:12:43.199 --> 01:12:47.760
What he was? It's mother in heaven, it's a bar

1274
01:12:47.920 --> 01:12:48.479
of gold.

1275
01:13:01.119 --> 01:13:03.279
It is.

1276
01:13:05.239 --> 01:13:07.840
Later then.

1277
01:13:09.600 --> 01:13:11.880
You thing?

1278
01:13:23.840 --> 01:13:28.039
How have you been? My dear? Sometimes I feel like

1279
01:13:28.920 --> 01:13:33.560
all I ever do is yap, yap, yap about myself.

1280
01:13:34.640 --> 01:13:39.000
I don't mean to be so one sided. I do

1281
01:13:39.239 --> 01:13:42.720
so enjoy when you come here and spend your time

1282
01:13:42.840 --> 01:13:51.439
with me very very much. What's that, Well, that does

1283
01:13:51.640 --> 01:13:56.159
sound like a conundrum. I've found that many times in

1284
01:13:56.319 --> 01:14:02.239
life when I feel challenged and torn between different directions,

1285
01:14:03.279 --> 01:14:09.039
I tend to decide to take action. Fear is simply

1286
01:14:09.159 --> 01:14:13.680
your enemy. You can't be afraid of what's behind the

1287
01:14:13.800 --> 01:14:14.800
black curtain.

1288
01:14:16.720 --> 01:14:19.840
Now, Roma Wines present.

1289
01:14:26.720 --> 01:14:35.279
Suspense the Night a black Curtain starring Carry Grant.

1290
01:14:39.199 --> 01:14:43.079

1291
01:14:43.199 --> 01:14:48.199

1292
01:14:48.199 --> 01:14:50.760
add so much pleasantness to the way you live, to

1293
01:14:50.920 --> 01:14:56.279
your happiness and entertaining guests to your enjoyment of everyday meals. Yes,

1294
01:14:56.600 --> 01:14:59.560
right now a glass fell would be very pleasant as

1295
01:14:59.720 --> 01:15:02.600
Roma Wines bring you suspense.

1296
01:15:05.319 --> 01:15:07.359
This is the man in Black here for the Roma

1297
01:15:07.399 --> 01:15:11.000
Wine Company of Presno, California. You introduced this weekly half

1298
01:15:11.079 --> 01:15:15.239
hour of Suspense the Night in Hollywood. We are honored

1299
01:15:15.239 --> 01:15:17.520
and happy to have with us one of the entertainment

1300
01:15:17.600 --> 01:15:22.199
world's most distinguished gentlemen, mister Kerry Grant. This becomes somewhat

1301
01:15:22.239 --> 01:15:25.119
of an anniversary broadcast, since it was one year ago

1302
01:15:25.159 --> 01:15:28.640
tonight that mister Grant inaugurated this series of suspense programs

1303
01:15:28.720 --> 01:15:32.800
sponsored by Roma Wines, and in response to requests from

1304
01:15:32.880 --> 01:15:35.680
our listeners, he will appear once more in the suspense

1305
01:15:35.720 --> 01:15:38.920
play by Cornell Woolrich which starred him on that occasion.

1306
01:15:39.680 --> 01:15:42.159
So with the Black Curtain and with the performance of

1307
01:15:42.279 --> 01:15:45.640
Kerry Grant, we again hope to keep you in suspense.

1308
01:15:51.039 --> 01:15:54.000
It began a rather life began again for me. I

1309
01:15:54.079 --> 01:15:57.800
guess you'd say that day on that street, my head

1310
01:15:57.920 --> 01:16:00.960
was pounding terribly. I can hear all the noise and

1311
01:16:01.000 --> 01:16:03.840
the people milling around everything with a jumble at first.

1312
01:16:13.880 --> 01:16:16.000
All right, all right, gang, we let the doc through.

1313
01:16:17.000 --> 01:16:19.720
Mister policeman. He was running and boy, he really came

1314
01:16:19.760 --> 01:16:21.000
him six o'clock on the bean.

1315
01:16:21.319 --> 01:16:22.279
Get back there now.

1316
01:16:23.239 --> 01:16:27.319
My head, all right, thought it was plucking and a

1317
01:16:27.359 --> 01:16:28.000
big boy.

1318
01:16:27.880 --> 01:16:29.159
Grabbed it and run away back.

1319
01:16:29.560 --> 01:16:30.119
Put it back.

1320
01:16:30.199 --> 01:16:34.840
Give the doctor room. I'm okay, Never mind, Doc, I'm okay.

1321
01:16:37.319 --> 01:16:38.840
There seems to be nothing much the matter with you.

1322
01:16:38.960 --> 01:16:39.960
Say no, I'm all right.

1323
01:16:40.119 --> 01:16:42.159
I guess I can talk to him now, Doc, Yeah, sure,

1324
01:16:42.199 --> 01:16:43.960
go ahead. Officely just a bad boop on the head.

1325
01:16:43.960 --> 01:16:46.159
I think, yeah, you're all right, You're all right. You

1326
01:16:46.239 --> 01:16:47.039
can walk now, can't you?

1327
01:16:47.560 --> 01:16:47.800
Sure?

1328
01:16:48.000 --> 01:16:48.199
Sure?

1329
01:16:48.239 --> 01:16:48.399
Here?

1330
01:16:48.640 --> 01:16:49.319
Let me brush up?

1331
01:16:49.479 --> 01:16:53.840
Oh thanks, I'll be fine. Hey, hey, wait a minute,

1332
01:16:54.119 --> 01:16:55.520
what am I doing with an overcoat on?

1333
01:16:55.720 --> 01:16:56.039
All right?

1334
01:16:56.079 --> 01:16:56.199
Now?

1335
01:16:56.239 --> 01:16:58.039
Mistd Just so they got it on the plotter. What's

1336
01:16:58.079 --> 01:16:59.119
your name and where.

1337
01:16:58.920 --> 01:16:59.359
Do you live?

1338
01:17:00.199 --> 01:17:03.520
Townsend, Frank Townshend eight to Old Rutherbred Street. Here you

1339
01:17:03.560 --> 01:17:06.159
have a cigarette. You're still shaking things. I don't smoke.

1340
01:17:06.520 --> 01:17:08.920
Okay, where are we getting back? Propping at the receiving

1341
01:17:08.960 --> 01:17:10.239
hospital if you want to check you out?

1342
01:17:10.520 --> 01:17:14.159
Yes, well, hey, here's your hat, mister, I found it, thanks.

1343
01:17:13.960 --> 01:17:16.319
Kid, that's all now, come on over along, over along.

1344
01:17:16.399 --> 01:17:17.159
This guy's all right.

1345
01:17:17.800 --> 01:17:21.600
Oh thanks, Hey, sorry about the fellow the Dutch of wallet. Anyway,

1346
01:17:21.640 --> 01:17:23.760
here's your cigar case with the Townsend and I found

1347
01:17:23.800 --> 01:17:24.600
it right alongside of you.

1348
01:17:25.239 --> 01:17:29.039
But I don't know the case now. Besides, look at

1349
01:17:29.079 --> 01:17:31.439
the initials d M. I don't know what same initials

1350
01:17:31.479 --> 01:17:35.359
in the hat. Yeah, yes, but this is my hat.

1351
01:17:36.159 --> 01:17:37.600
Don't you even know your own hat?

1352
01:17:37.720 --> 01:17:37.960
Mister?

1353
01:17:39.079 --> 01:17:41.039
Wait a minute, wait a minute, I'm trying to think

1354
01:17:41.880 --> 01:17:44.960
where is this what this street you're on?

1355
01:17:45.159 --> 01:17:49.279
Tillery Street, Tillery Street? What am I doing on Tillery Street?

1356
01:17:50.079 --> 01:17:50.760
He's lost?

1357
01:17:51.159 --> 01:17:51.520
All right?

1358
01:17:51.600 --> 01:17:54.239
Now, look, my suggestion is that you go on home

1359
01:17:54.319 --> 01:17:56.800
and go lie down. It's cold starting to snow. Wait

1360
01:17:56.840 --> 01:17:59.600
a minute, Wait a minute, don't leave me. Tell me

1361
01:17:59.720 --> 01:18:01.439
what what happened?

1362
01:18:01.560 --> 01:18:01.760
Where?

1363
01:18:01.800 --> 01:18:04.279
You slipped on this icey sidewalk? Well down, hit your

1364
01:18:04.279 --> 01:18:06.279
head good and hard in the curve. You're up about

1365
01:18:06.319 --> 01:18:06.920
twenty minutes.

1366
01:18:06.960 --> 01:18:07.199
Wait.

1367
01:18:08.119 --> 01:18:09.920
Wait, ice on the sidewalk.

1368
01:18:10.039 --> 01:18:12.520
Look at that street cleaning department. Not to clear away,

1369
01:18:12.560 --> 01:18:17.079
that's snow too, But snow and ice snore? Why snow

1370
01:18:17.199 --> 01:18:21.640
in July July, December, December nineteen forty.

1371
01:18:21.399 --> 01:18:25.319
Four, nineteen forty four. You better get on home, son,

1372
01:18:25.720 --> 01:18:28.119
Good night, nineteen forty four.

1373
01:18:29.359 --> 01:18:42.279
Woo, December nineteen forty four. My last I remember was

1374
01:18:42.359 --> 01:18:49.760
July nineteen forty one, three years just gone amnesia. A

1375
01:18:49.880 --> 01:18:52.079
black curtain comes down over your mind, out of nowhere.

1376
01:18:52.880 --> 01:18:54.640
That black curtain has been over my eyes.

1377
01:18:54.479 --> 01:18:58.800
For three years. Where had I been? Who had I been?

1378
01:18:58.880 --> 01:18:59.039
Man?

1379
01:19:00.039 --> 01:19:04.960
I hadn't been faying Townsend. I've been someone else d N,

1380
01:19:06.199 --> 01:19:07.680
someone whose initials.

1381
01:19:07.279 --> 01:19:07.760
Were d N.

1382
01:19:09.960 --> 01:19:12.960
I walked him on Tillery Street thinking about it those

1383
01:19:13.079 --> 01:19:16.600
three years what I could.

1384
01:19:16.479 --> 01:19:20.159
Have been married, could have been a sea fight, yeah,

1385
01:19:21.239 --> 01:19:22.880
something maybe turn around on the street for a moment,

1386
01:19:23.479 --> 01:19:25.960
and that was when I first saw him, gray eyes.

1387
01:19:26.479 --> 01:19:28.119
He'd been talking to the competence of my name.

1388
01:19:28.680 --> 01:19:31.039
He looked up as I did, and then he started

1389
01:19:31.039 --> 01:19:34.920
to walk rapidly in my direction, back away. Instinctively, something

1390
01:19:34.960 --> 01:19:39.159
about him spelled trouble. He called, hey for you stop stop,

1391
01:19:39.239 --> 01:19:42.359
Towns and stop. Instinctively on you, I should run get

1392
01:19:42.399 --> 01:19:44.399
away from you. I look back at the round to

1393
01:19:44.439 --> 01:19:46.279
the corner and had a cun in his hand. He

1394
01:19:46.399 --> 01:19:49.039
raised it and I turned and round for my life.

1395
01:19:57.960 --> 01:20:01.239
What lay behind that black curtain which separated Townsend from

1396
01:20:01.319 --> 01:20:06.279
his past? Roma Wines are presenting Hollywood's distinguished peragram, a

1397
01:20:06.479 --> 01:20:19.479
star of Tonight's Tale of Suspense, Heavan.

1398
01:20:19.520 --> 01:20:22.560
Do you often realize that many of life's finest enjoyments

1399
01:20:22.600 --> 01:20:26.159
are simple and moderate rather than the opposite. I give

1400
01:20:26.199 --> 01:20:28.239
you the words of a high and well of authority,

1401
01:20:28.319 --> 01:20:33.239
Miss Elsa Maxwell, international expert on smart entertaining and gracious living.

1402
01:20:33.640 --> 01:20:38.840
Good hospitality is always simple, genuine and moderate. That is

1403
01:20:38.920 --> 01:20:42.800
why I often suggest enjoyment of delicious Roma Saw turn

1404
01:20:43.319 --> 01:20:45.520
when you have friends in to dinner or with your

1405
01:20:45.560 --> 01:20:50.359
everyday meals. Serve this delicate golden saw turn well chilled

1406
01:20:50.439 --> 01:20:54.199
with any food in any glasses you have Special wine

1407
01:20:54.239 --> 01:20:56.359
glasses are pretty, but not very important.

1408
01:20:56.560 --> 01:20:59.079
Now what can I add to such charming good senses

1409
01:20:59.119 --> 01:21:03.520
that maybe just this Roma sultern and all Roma wines

1410
01:21:03.920 --> 01:21:04.520
are the best.

1411
01:21:04.600 --> 01:21:06.039
That California is magnificent.

1412
01:21:06.199 --> 01:21:10.720
Sun ripened grapes can provide inglorious color, fragrance, and flavor,

1413
01:21:11.319 --> 01:21:14.359
protected for you by the ancient wine skill of Roma's

1414
01:21:14.399 --> 01:21:18.199
famed wineries. That's why Roma wines and Roma quality do

1415
01:21:18.359 --> 01:21:23.960
not vary, never fall short, but are always enjoyable. Unchanging

1416
01:21:24.079 --> 01:21:28.520
high quality gives tremendous popularity to Roma wines and makes

1417
01:21:28.600 --> 01:21:34.520
low cost possible only pennies a glass. Remember, more Americans enjoy.

1418
01:21:34.439 --> 01:21:36.960
Roma than any other wines.

1419
01:21:37.760 --> 01:21:40.399
R O M A Roma wines.

1420
01:21:43.119 --> 01:21:45.000
And now it is with pleasure that we bring back

1421
01:21:45.039 --> 01:21:48.640
to our soundstage mystic carry grants and the Black Curtain,

1422
01:21:49.039 --> 01:21:52.600
a story well calculated to keep you in suspense.

1423
01:22:00.359 --> 01:22:05.399
Why was that man following me with a gun? What

1424
01:22:05.600 --> 01:22:06.880
did gray eyes want with me?

1425
01:22:08.319 --> 01:22:09.319
I must have done something.

1426
01:22:10.000 --> 01:22:12.159
I had to get away someplace to be safe, and

1427
01:22:12.239 --> 01:22:15.079
think I beat it down into the subway and hid

1428
01:22:15.520 --> 01:22:18.039
for two hours. I stayed down there. I thought it

1429
01:22:18.079 --> 01:22:20.560
all out carefully. During those two hours, I knew I

1430
01:22:20.680 --> 01:22:23.560
was on the spot for something. Gray eyes meant business.

1431
01:22:24.600 --> 01:22:25.319
What could it be?

1432
01:22:26.199 --> 01:22:28.079
Who had I been during those last three years with

1433
01:22:28.199 --> 01:22:29.399
that black curtain in front of them?

1434
01:22:30.479 --> 01:22:30.640
Oh?

1435
01:22:30.720 --> 01:22:32.520
Maybe I've been a gangster when he was one of

1436
01:22:32.560 --> 01:22:35.359
my mob that wanted to rub me out. I didn't know,

1437
01:22:36.560 --> 01:22:39.560
no identification, my wallet stolen, nothing in my pockets are

1438
01:22:39.560 --> 01:22:44.199
but help? Just DN in the hat and DN on

1439
01:22:44.279 --> 01:22:45.159
the cigar case.

1440
01:22:46.239 --> 01:22:46.800
D N.

1441
01:22:48.079 --> 01:22:50.359
My head was aching with worry. My stomach can't panic

1442
01:22:50.439 --> 01:22:52.880
in it. I had to find out who I'd been,

1443
01:22:53.560 --> 01:22:54.319
what I had done?

1444
01:22:55.880 --> 01:22:57.560
But how where.

1445
01:23:00.159 --> 01:23:00.479
Street?

1446
01:23:01.399 --> 01:23:04.439
That's where i'd been when I woke up, Tillery Street.

1447
01:23:05.880 --> 01:23:07.760
Well maybe gray Eyes would go back there too, looking

1448
01:23:07.800 --> 01:23:10.079
for me, But I had to take that chance.

1449
01:23:10.800 --> 01:23:26.800
Tillery Street. Yeah, Oh good evening pop?

1450
01:23:27.359 --> 01:23:27.560
Hello?

1451
01:23:28.359 --> 01:23:29.439
Oh hello there?

1452
01:23:29.760 --> 01:23:32.560
Oh you know me? Sure? I couldn't see under that

1453
01:23:32.640 --> 01:23:33.840
hatters first, what.

1454
01:23:33.960 --> 01:23:34.680
Can I do for you?

1455
01:23:36.319 --> 01:23:38.600
Have you got an evening paper I could look at? No, Sarah,

1456
01:23:38.600 --> 01:23:39.199
I never read them.

1457
01:23:39.439 --> 01:23:41.720
So much trouble in the world these days, anyhow, Say

1458
01:23:42.199 --> 01:23:44.800
how you been? You haven't been around two or three weeks.

1459
01:23:45.760 --> 01:23:51.119
Well, i've been busy. Oh look, pop, Yeah, I made

1460
01:23:51.159 --> 01:23:53.720
a bet with a friend of mine. But even though

1461
01:23:53.760 --> 01:23:56.079
you see so many customers, you'd walk right up and

1462
01:23:56.159 --> 01:23:57.119
give me my full name.

1463
01:23:57.640 --> 01:23:59.960
Oh well, I'm sorry, I don't know what. I don't

1464
01:24:00.079 --> 01:24:02.640
think I ever heard your name, but I know your

1465
01:24:02.760 --> 01:24:07.880
girl a girl. Well you do well now, now maybe

1466
01:24:07.880 --> 01:24:10.239
I can still win my bad Why of course Ruth

1467
01:24:10.880 --> 01:24:13.119
lives right across the street, the artillery apartment.

1468
01:24:14.079 --> 01:24:15.800
Oh well that's right, Ruth.

1469
01:24:16.880 --> 01:24:21.319
Ah now one apartment part free see of course when

1470
01:24:21.399 --> 01:24:23.039
I take the sandwiches up there every night.

1471
01:24:23.600 --> 01:24:24.199
Free see.

1472
01:24:24.640 --> 01:24:24.840
Yeah.

1473
01:24:25.399 --> 01:24:27.399
Yes, well thanks. Will you win your bet, mister?

1474
01:24:27.720 --> 01:24:27.880
Huh?

1475
01:24:28.680 --> 01:24:30.760
Oh, yes, I think I will. What is your name

1476
01:24:30.800 --> 01:24:33.239
so i'll know it next time? I'll tell you tomorrow,

1477
01:24:34.760 --> 01:24:35.119
I hope.

1478
01:24:35.479 --> 01:24:35.760
Hello.

1479
01:24:36.239 --> 01:24:41.199
Come on, pop, obviously, what's the matter of not something? No, nothing, nothing,

1480
01:24:42.000 --> 01:24:42.760
just tying a shoe.

1481
01:24:45.960 --> 01:24:47.560
I've just been going to walk out when I saw

1482
01:24:47.640 --> 01:24:51.319
him standing across the street, gray eyes again.

1483
01:24:52.039 --> 01:24:53.800
I tuk down behind the store window. I watch do it.

1484
01:24:54.399 --> 01:24:56.199
He looked over in my direction and then up and

1485
01:24:56.199 --> 01:25:00.359
down the street, then lit a cigarette and smoke down corner.

1486
01:25:00.880 --> 01:25:02.560
The minute he disappeared I young the door up and

1487
01:25:02.600 --> 01:25:04.520
dashed out and ran across the Tillery apartments and went in.

1488
01:25:19.840 --> 01:25:19.880
It.

1489
01:25:20.600 --> 01:25:23.000
Ruth, Yeah, it's me.

1490
01:25:26.079 --> 01:25:26.359
Dan.

1491
01:25:27.319 --> 01:25:29.279
Oh Danny, were you get in here?

1492
01:25:30.319 --> 01:25:35.279
Oh darling, it's really you, Danny. Why did you come here?

1493
01:25:35.560 --> 01:25:37.119
He's been around twice today. He may be in the

1494
01:25:37.119 --> 01:25:41.039
neighborhood right now for all Yes, who who oh slattery?

1495
01:25:41.079 --> 01:25:45.560
Of course, ah haus he got gray eyes.

1496
01:25:47.000 --> 01:25:49.119
Yeah. Did you ever see a detective that didn't?

1497
01:25:50.239 --> 01:25:51.960
I'm sure sure then?

1498
01:25:52.079 --> 01:25:55.239
He was the matter with you laking so strangely?

1499
01:25:56.000 --> 01:25:58.520
Well, I just wanted to look at you.

1500
01:25:59.359 --> 01:26:03.640
You seem so different, so far away. Well I would

1501
01:26:03.680 --> 01:26:04.000
kiss me.

1502
01:26:04.800 --> 01:26:06.439
Well, that's easily fixed.

1503
01:26:10.319 --> 01:26:12.399
Oh darling, Where have you been for three weeks?

1504
01:26:12.760 --> 01:26:14.479
Around? Miss me?

1505
01:26:14.880 --> 01:26:15.520
You know I did?

1506
01:26:16.560 --> 01:26:16.880
Danny?

1507
01:26:17.439 --> 01:26:20.119
Danny disposed? Do you think we could get away tonight?

1508
01:26:20.479 --> 01:26:22.600
I've got three thousand dollars saved up. We could go

1509
01:26:22.640 --> 01:26:27.039
to Mexico or South America. We can get married, mister

1510
01:26:27.119 --> 01:26:28.399
and missus Daniel.

1511
01:26:28.119 --> 01:26:31.760
Nearing tour the world, Daniel Nearing.

1512
01:26:33.119 --> 01:26:36.760
Mister and missus sounds plenty good to me, or you'll

1513
01:26:36.800 --> 01:26:38.760
never know how good, and we'll get out of here tonight.

1514
01:26:39.079 --> 01:26:40.640
I'll call up and tell them I'm putting my job.

1515
01:26:41.000 --> 01:26:43.399
I'll say I'm sick. Oh my stuff's here. Nothing out

1516
01:26:43.439 --> 01:26:47.279
there but a couple of uniforms. I'll make Aiden and Franklin.

1517
01:26:47.319 --> 01:26:50.359
The presenter goes, Franklin, why don't you bother your head

1518
01:26:50.359 --> 01:26:53.960
about those two? They weren't glad when it happened. A

1519
01:26:54.039 --> 01:26:56.239
couple of vultures bright to them.

1520
01:26:57.520 --> 01:26:58.479
Oh with you back?

1521
01:26:58.960 --> 01:26:59.680
Would you pack?

1522
01:27:00.680 --> 01:27:02.239
Just think with my three thousand week.

1523
01:27:02.920 --> 01:27:04.680
You think you want to quit your job?

1524
01:27:04.880 --> 01:27:08.319
Well, absolutely, I think so. I never was cut out

1525
01:27:08.359 --> 01:27:09.159
to be a nurse.

1526
01:27:08.960 --> 01:27:13.640
Anyway, any more than than I was.

1527
01:27:13.800 --> 01:27:15.520
More than you were meant to be a secretary.

1528
01:27:16.399 --> 01:27:17.920
Yeah, that's right.

1529
01:27:19.119 --> 01:27:21.720
I never wanted to be a secretary, just drifted into it.

1530
01:27:21.800 --> 01:27:24.479
I guess I kind of got him my nerves, especially

1531
01:27:24.520 --> 01:27:28.359
thought the end. The uh, the boss was no sense

1532
01:27:28.439 --> 01:27:29.119
to work for us.

1533
01:27:29.159 --> 01:27:30.359
We certainly wasn't.

1534
01:27:30.680 --> 01:27:31.359
It was a rat.

1535
01:27:32.199 --> 01:27:35.840
Oh the Holy tree bunch for me, whole family.

1536
01:27:36.479 --> 01:27:37.199
Yeah that's right.

1537
01:27:38.039 --> 01:27:39.119
I'll accept the old man.

1538
01:27:39.920 --> 01:27:44.319
Oh, the old man. Yeah, I sort of liked him,

1539
01:27:44.359 --> 01:27:44.640
didn't I.

1540
01:27:45.000 --> 01:27:47.479
He loves you too. I think he wished you had

1541
01:27:47.479 --> 01:27:48.000
been his son.

1542
01:27:49.039 --> 01:27:49.760
Poor old man.

1543
01:27:49.800 --> 01:27:52.399
He's the only reason I've stuck around out there. There's long.

1544
01:27:53.680 --> 01:27:55.119
How are things out there?

1545
01:27:55.399 --> 01:27:58.359
Oh, they've been questioning all of us. They've made off lately,

1546
01:27:58.399 --> 01:28:01.880
those isn't you? Oh, don't talk any more about it.

1547
01:28:02.560 --> 01:28:05.640
You're back. That's the main thing. I want to forget

1548
01:28:05.720 --> 01:28:11.479
New Jericho and I'll hold Jericho. Huh Oh, Danny, Oh,

1549
01:28:11.680 --> 01:28:12.520
you couldn't happen.

1550
01:28:13.119 --> 01:28:14.359
What hadn't you know?

1551
01:28:14.600 --> 01:28:14.640
What?

1552
01:28:16.199 --> 01:28:16.439
Dnny?

1553
01:28:16.479 --> 01:28:17.279
What's going to be home?

1554
01:28:17.319 --> 01:28:17.560
Have you?

1555
01:28:19.159 --> 01:28:19.960
I wish I knew?

1556
01:28:20.880 --> 01:28:22.319
Can you get away from that windows?

1557
01:28:23.239 --> 01:28:26.399
He's down there, gray eyes, he's standing in front of

1558
01:28:26.399 --> 01:28:28.920
the hydrant. He's coming in here in the building.

1559
01:28:29.000 --> 01:28:29.880
Oh did you see you?

1560
01:28:30.760 --> 01:28:32.319
Buck Ruth? Will you help me?

1561
01:28:32.439 --> 01:28:33.039
What are you going to do?

1562
01:28:33.600 --> 01:28:37.199
Give myself up? No getting shot out? What can they

1563
01:28:37.279 --> 01:28:37.600
do to me?

1564
01:28:38.199 --> 01:28:38.880
Crazy fool?

1565
01:28:38.880 --> 01:28:41.720
That can send you to the chair chair? What do

1566
01:28:41.800 --> 01:28:43.800
you think happens to a man when he's killing his murder?

1567
01:28:48.520 --> 01:28:48.800
Murder?

1568
01:28:49.760 --> 01:28:53.279
Ruce, Listen to me, I'm not a murderer. The whole

1569
01:28:53.319 --> 01:28:54.560
world says I committed murderer.

1570
01:28:54.560 --> 01:28:57.199
I said I didn't me that's me, He says, I didn't.

1571
01:28:57.279 --> 01:28:58.960
I never said you were, Danny. I always said you

1572
01:28:59.039 --> 01:29:02.199
didn't do it. They found the body in the only

1573
01:29:02.279 --> 01:29:04.960
you have to run away, So.

1574
01:29:05.159 --> 01:29:06.119
That's it all right?

1575
01:29:07.680 --> 01:29:08.800
Oh why did you come here?

1576
01:29:08.920 --> 01:29:09.079
Dan?

1577
01:29:09.199 --> 01:29:09.239
You?

1578
01:29:09.359 --> 01:29:10.880
What? Ruth?

1579
01:29:10.960 --> 01:29:13.079
Quick, We've got to get out of here. How about

1580
01:29:13.079 --> 01:29:19.479
the fire escape shaft? Don't waiter, don't waiter here, quick,

1581
01:29:21.279 --> 01:29:21.560
get in.

1582
01:29:22.039 --> 01:29:22.960
I'll stand on the top of work.

1583
01:29:23.000 --> 01:29:24.760
The ropes they can hold us both.

1584
01:29:24.960 --> 01:29:25.199
Got to.

1585
01:29:29.279 --> 01:29:31.800
Can you hear me, Danny?

1586
01:29:31.840 --> 01:29:32.319
What do we do?

1587
01:29:32.840 --> 01:29:33.640
We're going back there?

1588
01:29:34.000 --> 01:29:34.239
Jerry?

1589
01:29:35.600 --> 01:29:38.840
Oh no, Daddy, don't, please, don't, don't.

1590
01:29:39.039 --> 01:29:40.680
We've got to We've got to find out.

1591
01:29:40.920 --> 01:29:41.640
We're going together.

1592
01:29:42.399 --> 01:29:45.000
No, no, daddy, no, I've got the money. We can

1593
01:29:45.039 --> 01:29:45.560
get out of here.

1594
01:29:45.880 --> 01:29:46.199
Stop it.

1595
01:29:46.479 --> 01:29:48.920
Oh, daddy, my arm. You're hurting me.

1596
01:29:49.319 --> 01:29:50.000
From here on in.

1597
01:29:50.439 --> 01:29:53.000
We're sticking together. You're going to take me back there.

1598
01:29:53.119 --> 01:29:54.600
Ruth's back where it happened.

1599
01:29:54.720 --> 01:30:00.079
A crazy but I'll go wherever you go. I can't lose.

1600
01:30:08.520 --> 01:30:09.119
On the train.

1601
01:30:09.239 --> 01:30:11.760
Ruth and I said very little to each other while

1602
01:30:11.800 --> 01:30:14.039
I had hidden the telephone booth in Pennsylvania Station. She

1603
01:30:14.159 --> 01:30:17.039
brought us a couple of cheap overcoats, and I sat

1604
01:30:17.119 --> 01:30:18.199
hunched up in mine.

1605
01:30:18.479 --> 01:30:23.600
Thinking, thinking Ruth had brought along the newspaper tippees.

1606
01:30:24.000 --> 01:30:26.520
I looked at what they said for the twentieth time,

1607
01:30:27.079 --> 01:30:28.760
trying to see if there was anything there that would

1608
01:30:28.760 --> 01:30:33.239
help me. Dietrich slayers thought it said, Secretary wanted them

1609
01:30:33.239 --> 01:30:37.479
brutus slaying in suburban estate at least suppressing the search

1610
01:30:37.560 --> 01:30:41.119
for Daniel Nearing, secretary and the employee of the late

1611
01:30:41.199 --> 01:30:45.000
John Dietrich, fifty eighth member of a well known local family,

1612
01:30:45.680 --> 01:30:48.079
who was shocked and killed in the drawing room of

1613
01:30:48.119 --> 01:30:50.760
his new Jericho estate on the morning of November seventh.

1614
01:30:51.760 --> 01:30:54.840
Nearing disappeared November the seventh, on the morning of which

1615
01:30:54.920 --> 01:30:56.760
date he is known to have had a bitter quarrel

1616
01:30:56.800 --> 01:31:00.880
with the deceased. This last was attested to by Ada

1617
01:31:01.039 --> 01:31:03.640
and Franklin Dietrich, widow and brother of the murdered me.

1618
01:31:09.239 --> 01:31:10.760
Well, I had all the facts now.

1619
01:31:12.319 --> 01:31:15.680
I wanted for murder, and yet everything that was in

1620
01:31:15.800 --> 01:31:18.119
me told me that no matter who I'd been, however

1621
01:31:18.239 --> 01:31:20.800
many memories I had lost, and I was no killer,

1622
01:31:21.199 --> 01:31:25.840
and I just couldn't. I had to get into the

1623
01:31:25.880 --> 01:31:28.119
Dietrich house and stand again in that room where it

1624
01:31:28.199 --> 01:31:30.800
had all happened. Maybe something would come back to me.

1625
01:31:31.560 --> 01:31:32.359
Maybe they would.

1626
01:31:44.439 --> 01:31:52.520
Kenny, doc Aiden, Franklin just let down to the village.

1627
01:31:52.720 --> 01:31:54.399
Did they say anything about you being out here? On

1628
01:31:54.479 --> 01:31:56.319
your day off, make some cracks.

1629
01:31:56.840 --> 01:31:58.399
I said I had nothing to do in town, and

1630
01:31:58.600 --> 01:31:59.399
they not to write.

1631
01:31:59.239 --> 01:32:00.760
Some y to go there.

1632
01:32:02.279 --> 01:32:02.479
Day.

1633
01:32:02.560 --> 01:32:09.600
I'm scared. Please, let's not stay here. I'm scared. They're

1634
01:32:09.640 --> 01:32:11.239
only going to the building. They'll be back in half

1635
01:32:11.239 --> 01:32:12.039
an hour the most.

1636
01:32:13.880 --> 01:32:16.479
Open the door, Ruth, hurry, I've got to see the

1637
01:32:16.560 --> 01:32:19.079
inside that room, a place where it happened.

1638
01:32:19.239 --> 01:32:22.359
It's wrong, Danny. I'm telling you you're crazy. They'll find you.

1639
01:32:22.720 --> 01:32:24.199
Open the door, Ruth quickly.

1640
01:32:26.399 --> 01:32:26.800
Mm hmm.

1641
01:32:30.079 --> 01:32:33.479
All right, now let's have a look at that room.

1642
01:32:33.560 --> 01:32:35.279
Please, Danny, don't don't talk about it.

1643
01:32:35.439 --> 01:32:37.720
Please, Mum.

1644
01:32:39.239 --> 01:32:41.479
This is where I'm supposed to have murdered John Dietrich.

1645
01:32:43.159 --> 01:32:45.479
Where was it? Show me exactly where it was, Ruth.

1646
01:32:45.760 --> 01:32:46.359
I've got to know.

1647
01:32:46.920 --> 01:32:51.279
It's there, right there. I was standing by the grandfather's clock.

1648
01:32:52.520 --> 01:32:54.479
Are you going crazy? Danny? As they get to your

1649
01:32:54.600 --> 01:32:55.880
hang by the clock.

1650
01:32:56.800 --> 01:32:57.800
You still believe me, don't you?

1651
01:32:57.880 --> 01:32:58.039
Ruth?

1652
01:32:58.199 --> 01:32:59.079
I believe you, Danny.

1653
01:32:59.119 --> 01:33:01.600
Perhaps he love.

1654
01:33:02.920 --> 01:33:03.199
People.

1655
01:33:03.760 --> 01:33:05.359
That's that listen that.

1656
01:33:05.479 --> 01:33:06.319
Don't the old man?

1657
01:33:07.079 --> 01:33:09.359
I just sleep in that room. Don't believe Danny. Don't

1658
01:33:09.359 --> 01:33:10.199
please awake him.

1659
01:33:10.640 --> 01:33:11.439
I want to see him.

1660
01:33:11.800 --> 01:33:14.560
No, don't, Danny, No, he can't help you. You know,

1661
01:33:14.640 --> 01:33:15.960
he's paralyzed. He can't talk.

1662
01:33:16.600 --> 01:33:17.840
Turn on the night. I want to see him.

1663
01:33:18.960 --> 01:33:22.359
There you're walking on. That's me, mister Dick.

1664
01:33:24.600 --> 01:33:25.239
This is Danny.

1665
01:33:26.319 --> 01:33:27.239
You remember Danny.

1666
01:33:27.319 --> 01:33:29.720
Don't you hello, mister Didrich.

1667
01:33:30.920 --> 01:33:31.760
His eyes are shine?

1668
01:33:32.079 --> 01:33:35.159
Yeah, tell me was he here when it happened?

1669
01:33:35.680 --> 01:33:36.079
You know that?

1670
01:33:36.199 --> 01:33:38.680
Danny? Why do you ask such a many questions? He's

1671
01:33:38.680 --> 01:33:39.960
been a bed here for five years.

1672
01:33:40.640 --> 01:33:40.840
Yes.

1673
01:33:41.560 --> 01:33:44.239
For that mirror on the wall. Here that clock.

1674
01:33:44.800 --> 01:33:48.640
Look you can see the grandfather's clock in the other room. Wow,

1675
01:33:48.720 --> 01:33:51.159
he could see it. The old man can see the

1676
01:33:51.239 --> 01:33:54.680
murder through the mirror. Oh if he only could talk.

1677
01:33:54.720 --> 01:33:55.439
But he can't talk.

1678
01:33:55.720 --> 01:33:56.560
You scare me, Danny.

1679
01:33:56.640 --> 01:33:59.199
Don't he saw the man who killed John di Drich.

1680
01:33:59.640 --> 01:34:03.039
Look he understands what I'm saying. He's blinking his eyes.

1681
01:34:03.640 --> 01:34:05.960
Oh, stop torturing him, Danny. Can't you see what you're doing?

1682
01:34:06.039 --> 01:34:08.920
Tuition, Try to say something. Look, his eyes are blinking.

1683
01:34:09.479 --> 01:34:10.199
He's going to help me.

1684
01:34:10.840 --> 01:34:11.880
Go outside and watch Ruth.

1685
01:34:12.000 --> 01:34:14.840
Go on and watch out of the entrance. Be careful

1686
01:34:14.880 --> 01:34:16.039
that he will be back any minute.

1687
01:34:16.279 --> 01:34:16.800
Leave me alone.

1688
01:34:19.600 --> 01:34:24.039
Look now, mister d Trich, don't be afraid. I'm going

1689
01:34:24.079 --> 01:34:25.960
to ask you a question, and I'd like you to

1690
01:34:26.000 --> 01:34:30.439
answer me. You're trying to tell me something about the murder. Now,

1691
01:34:30.720 --> 01:34:34.279
blink your eyes. Blink twice. If you are that said

1692
01:34:34.720 --> 01:34:36.960
once twice, that's good.

1693
01:34:38.159 --> 01:34:42.000
Did you see it happen here in your mirror? Blink once?

1694
01:34:42.039 --> 01:34:44.600
If the answer is no, twice. If the answer is yes,

1695
01:34:45.760 --> 01:34:47.680
once twice, you did.

1696
01:34:47.800 --> 01:34:47.960
Huh?

1697
01:34:48.920 --> 01:34:49.319
You saw it?

1698
01:34:51.960 --> 01:34:52.079
Now?

1699
01:34:52.159 --> 01:34:54.680
Then is the murderer in this house?

1700
01:34:56.640 --> 01:34:57.159
Get out of here?

1701
01:34:57.359 --> 01:34:57.600
Hide?

1702
01:34:58.159 --> 01:34:58.960
When then he wants?

1703
01:34:59.199 --> 01:35:02.319
Is the murderer this house? Once for no? Twice for yes?

1704
01:35:03.760 --> 01:35:03.960
Yes?

1705
01:35:04.600 --> 01:35:05.159
In this house?

1706
01:35:06.439 --> 01:35:06.560
Wait?

1707
01:35:06.600 --> 01:35:09.119
Wait, I almost done it, mister Dietrich.

1708
01:35:09.920 --> 01:35:10.279
Was it me?

1709
01:35:11.399 --> 01:35:12.720
Once for no, twice for yes?

1710
01:35:13.479 --> 01:35:13.880
Was it me?

1711
01:35:14.279 --> 01:35:16.520
Get out for a little bit? Room near behind the curtains.

1712
01:35:16.960 --> 01:35:17.680
I'll talk to them.

1713
01:35:18.319 --> 01:35:20.640
Okay, thanks, mister t Trick, I'll be back.

1714
01:35:24.399 --> 01:35:27.560
Ru Rue, It is that you and father's room?

1715
01:35:27.880 --> 01:35:28.760
Yes, missus Dietrick.

1716
01:35:29.399 --> 01:35:30.319
Are you here alone?

1717
01:35:30.960 --> 01:35:31.079
Oh?

1718
01:35:31.239 --> 01:35:31.399
Yes?

1719
01:35:31.720 --> 01:35:31.920
Why?

1720
01:35:32.840 --> 01:35:35.560
Well we thought we heard voices.

1721
01:35:36.960 --> 01:35:38.399
Are you so jilery about rude?

1722
01:35:39.000 --> 01:35:39.560
I'm tired.

1723
01:35:39.640 --> 01:35:41.720
That's all go bed now.

1724
01:35:42.560 --> 01:35:43.800
Oh they're still awake room.

1725
01:35:43.840 --> 01:35:47.159
Well, he'll go to sleep, all right, I'm going upstairs, missus.

1726
01:35:47.640 --> 01:35:49.439
Now, good night, good night.

1727
01:35:51.359 --> 01:35:53.600
She brought someone back here with her. It's him, I think.

1728
01:35:55.479 --> 01:35:55.680
Damn.

1729
01:35:56.840 --> 01:35:58.760
Oh, frank take it easy, darling, take it easy.

1730
01:35:59.000 --> 01:35:59.960
If he's here, we'll get him.

1731
01:36:00.319 --> 01:36:03.279
After the evidence became against him at the hearing. Oh,

1732
01:36:03.319 --> 01:36:06.800
I'm scared. I'll go to the village for no.

1733
01:36:07.159 --> 01:36:12.039
No, call the police here out of it. Hello, Hello,

1734
01:36:13.439 --> 01:36:16.039
it's too late, said, the wires have been cut. Come

1735
01:36:16.079 --> 01:36:17.239
I will both drive to the village.

1736
01:36:18.079 --> 01:36:20.159
He may be waiting for us out by the car.

1737
01:36:20.680 --> 01:36:25.279
Uh, what are you doing there, Franklin?

1738
01:36:26.319 --> 01:36:28.680
I think I might just need my gun.

1739
01:36:29.880 --> 01:36:40.039
Come on, let's be on our way. The moment they

1740
01:36:40.079 --> 01:36:41.520
left the house, I made for the old man's room.

1741
01:36:41.880 --> 01:36:44.479
I called for Ruth, but she was gone. Maybe Franklin

1742
01:36:44.560 --> 01:36:46.520
Nenada called her after she cut the telephone wire.

1743
01:36:46.560 --> 01:36:49.239
But I couldn't wait. My life was hanging on minutes. Now,

1744
01:36:49.960 --> 01:36:54.680
I shot the flashlight on the old man's face again. Now,

1745
01:36:55.239 --> 01:36:56.800
mister Drech, you're helping me.

1746
01:36:56.920 --> 01:36:59.600
Fine. You know I'm trying to save my life, don't

1747
01:36:59.640 --> 01:37:02.319
you now? The murderer?

1748
01:37:02.760 --> 01:37:03.079
Was it me?

1749
01:37:03.760 --> 01:37:04.039
Was it me?

1750
01:37:04.119 --> 01:37:04.520
Who did it?

1751
01:37:04.880 --> 01:37:04.920
Me?

1752
01:37:05.239 --> 01:37:08.760
Danning nearing drink once for no one?

1753
01:37:09.520 --> 01:37:09.800
Once?

1754
01:37:10.840 --> 01:37:11.279
For sure?

1755
01:37:11.760 --> 01:37:15.600
You're sure it wasn't mean? Oh, your smiling mister d

1756
01:37:15.720 --> 01:37:20.359
drink smiling. Now, Now there was somebody in this house?

1757
01:37:20.840 --> 01:37:21.439
And who was it?

1758
01:37:22.840 --> 01:37:23.000
Oh?

1759
01:37:23.279 --> 01:37:24.279
Can't you make a sound?

1760
01:37:25.000 --> 01:37:25.279
Help me?

1761
01:37:25.359 --> 01:37:28.479
You've got to what's the data? Twice for yes, once

1762
01:37:28.520 --> 01:37:33.000
for no, once no data? All right, then was it, Franklin,

1763
01:37:34.560 --> 01:37:37.720
Or you'll never go to trial. Franklin, you've got to listen.

1764
01:37:37.560 --> 01:37:39.319
To goot you are.

1765
01:37:39.359 --> 01:37:40.479
You're trying to kill the old man too.

1766
01:37:40.520 --> 01:37:42.960
He the murderer returns to the scene of as crime.

1767
01:37:43.199 --> 01:37:44.199
You know I didn't kill him.

1768
01:37:44.239 --> 01:37:45.600
Tell it to the police. They'll have him here in

1769
01:37:45.640 --> 01:37:46.319
a couple of minutes.

1770
01:37:46.960 --> 01:37:48.119
Where's your girlfriend, Ruth?

1771
01:37:48.319 --> 01:37:49.520
She's not here. I don't know where she went.

1772
01:37:49.640 --> 01:37:50.680
Never mind, they'll find her.

1773
01:37:51.399 --> 01:37:51.880
Mm hmmm.

1774
01:37:52.159 --> 01:37:53.239
You were dead that kneeling.

1775
01:37:53.920 --> 01:37:55.680
You killed my brother and beat it. What did you

1776
01:37:55.720 --> 01:37:57.279
ever get out of it? That's always puzzled me.

1777
01:37:57.840 --> 01:38:00.159
You killed your brother and now you're going to kill me.

1778
01:38:00.680 --> 01:38:02.960
You've gone nuts too. Why should I kill my own brother,

1779
01:38:03.039 --> 01:38:03.479
you idiot?

1780
01:38:03.640 --> 01:38:06.159
To get his share of the estate and his wife Ada,

1781
01:38:06.319 --> 01:38:10.560
among other things. You can't stop with killing me. Someone

1782
01:38:10.600 --> 01:38:13.640
else knows the truth. The old man saw it in the.

1783
01:38:13.680 --> 01:38:16.920
Mirror, right, Yes, you'll have to kill your own father.

1784
01:38:17.000 --> 01:38:18.119
The old man saw it how do you know?

1785
01:38:18.319 --> 01:38:19.720
He told me he can't talk.

1786
01:38:19.760 --> 01:38:20.359
He can't even move.

1787
01:38:20.399 --> 01:38:23.199
You can hear, and he can blink his eyes. Come

1788
01:38:23.279 --> 01:38:24.600
over here and look, O care you.

1789
01:38:26.840 --> 01:38:27.560
I had to do it.

1790
01:38:28.039 --> 01:38:28.520
I heard him.

1791
01:38:28.520 --> 01:38:29.159
He was going to kill you.

1792
01:38:29.800 --> 01:38:32.119
Here's the gun, Daddy, kick it. It'll be all right.

1793
01:38:33.000 --> 01:38:36.960
You shouldn't have done that. In another minute, I'm not.

1794
01:38:37.000 --> 01:38:37.399
Sure it was.

1795
01:38:38.279 --> 01:38:40.680
Please please let run for it. Don't be here in

1796
01:38:40.720 --> 01:38:43.800
a second. You last chance, the last way you did it.

1797
01:38:44.199 --> 01:38:45.520
If I can be with the old man another half

1798
01:38:45.560 --> 01:38:50.520
a minute, mister Dietrich, mister d is Danny, don't don't

1799
01:38:50.600 --> 01:38:52.000
don't tell me, mister Drik.

1800
01:38:52.479 --> 01:38:55.920
Was it Franklin? If Franklin killed your son John? Blink once?

1801
01:38:55.960 --> 01:38:56.439
If he did.

1802
01:38:58.560 --> 01:38:58.760
Want to?

1803
01:38:58.800 --> 01:39:01.359
Madame, mister Dtrich, don't be afraid. I won't hurt you.

1804
01:39:02.279 --> 01:39:04.399
But why are you afraid? He's afraid?

1805
01:39:04.479 --> 01:39:04.680
Ruth?

1806
01:39:06.000 --> 01:39:08.479
Oh, it's this gun. Yeah, take the gun, Ruth, He'll

1807
01:39:08.479 --> 01:39:10.680
take it. He's afraid. I'm not going to hurt you.

1808
01:39:10.720 --> 01:39:15.640
Mister d what's the matter? Why did you answer me?

1809
01:39:16.399 --> 01:39:17.600
Who killed John d Drich?

1810
01:39:18.479 --> 01:39:21.920
It wasn't me, It wasn't Eida, it wasn't Franklin. But

1811
01:39:22.079 --> 01:39:27.760
someone in the house was it, Ruth, Ruth?

1812
01:39:28.720 --> 01:39:31.920
You I told you.

1813
01:39:32.079 --> 01:39:33.239
I told you not to come.

1814
01:39:34.520 --> 01:39:34.680
Oh.

1815
01:39:34.760 --> 01:39:35.760
I love you, Danny.

1816
01:39:35.840 --> 01:39:36.479
I wanted you.

1817
01:39:37.319 --> 01:39:38.479
I wouldn't have let him get you.

1818
01:39:39.000 --> 01:39:42.319
Oh why why, Ruth? Why did you kill John d Drich?

1819
01:39:42.720 --> 01:39:45.680
He was always as me, wouldn't leave me alone. I

1820
01:39:45.800 --> 01:39:49.760
hated him. Now he came in, threatened me, but he

1821
01:39:49.960 --> 01:39:53.399
killed me. He couldn't have me, nobody could. He had

1822
01:39:53.399 --> 01:39:55.119
a gun, Danny, and I got it away from him.

1823
01:39:56.520 --> 01:39:57.319
I hit the cloth.

1824
01:39:58.079 --> 01:39:58.960
He leaned against it.

1825
01:40:00.119 --> 01:40:04.479
I thought he'd never pulled down die. It was a

1826
01:40:04.600 --> 01:40:07.119
day you ran away and I was crazy. They thought

1827
01:40:07.119 --> 01:40:09.119
it was you, and they started looking you.

1828
01:40:09.880 --> 01:40:10.560
Why was it you?

1829
01:40:11.000 --> 01:40:12.560
I love you, Danny, I love you.

1830
01:40:13.560 --> 01:40:15.079
I think you not to come back here.

1831
01:40:15.560 --> 01:40:15.800
Ruth.

1832
01:40:15.840 --> 01:40:17.119
Please put down that gun.

1833
01:40:18.039 --> 01:40:22.159
Stand back, Danny, stay over there. I just want to

1834
01:40:22.239 --> 01:40:22.640
look at you.

1835
01:40:24.800 --> 01:40:28.520
I was hoping we could get away together. You've been

1836
01:40:28.560 --> 01:40:34.720
through enough, Danny. We're all because of me. Now you're clear, Danny,

1837
01:40:36.680 --> 01:40:38.119
and this is going to clear me.

1838
01:40:40.439 --> 01:41:03.039
Darling, Ruth, dear Ruth. Well, that's about all there is

1839
01:41:03.119 --> 01:41:03.439
to tell.

1840
01:41:04.279 --> 01:41:06.880
I've tried to put it all behind me, to resume

1841
01:41:06.960 --> 01:41:08.479
my life where it left off three and a half

1842
01:41:08.600 --> 01:41:13.199
years ago. Sometimes when it gets toward evening, I go

1843
01:41:13.239 --> 01:41:16.560
and walk along Tillery Street, and once in a while somebody,

1844
01:41:16.920 --> 01:41:20.760
somebody I don't know will say hello, Danny, and I'd

1845
01:41:20.800 --> 01:41:21.920
just say hello and walk on.

1846
01:41:23.600 --> 01:41:25.159
And I don't want to find out anything more.

1847
01:41:25.960 --> 01:41:28.000
I want it all to die away and be still,

1848
01:41:28.520 --> 01:41:34.800
and it will, except Ruth, because somewhere behind that black curtain,

1849
01:41:35.359 --> 01:41:38.000
I was loved and loves someone.

1850
01:41:38.920 --> 01:41:42.000
We must have known a love, but I'll never know again.

1851
01:41:56.359 --> 01:41:59.119
And so closes the Black Curtain, starring Carry Grant, and

1852
01:41:59.199 --> 01:42:03.439
I'd study it suspense. Suspense is produced and directed by

1853
01:42:03.560 --> 01:42:04.279
William Spear.

1854
01:42:07.920 --> 01:42:11.840
Well after that one, I have a bit of a chill.

1855
01:42:12.800 --> 01:42:17.239
How about you, my dear, are you feeling a bit cold?

1856
01:42:18.399 --> 01:42:21.800
Don't worry. I'll get the pot going and you'll have

1857
01:42:21.920 --> 01:42:26.439
more hot tea to enjoy as we slowly bring our

1858
01:42:27.439 --> 01:42:34.439
eerie evening to a close. Or what's that? Well? I

1859
01:42:34.640 --> 01:42:37.319
know it does get a bit drafty down here, but

1860
01:42:38.239 --> 01:42:39.720
I feel like the chill is.

1861
01:42:41.399 --> 01:42:41.960
Is more.

1862
01:42:43.439 --> 01:42:48.800
Aggressive than Norman. But that could just be me being

1863
01:42:48.880 --> 01:42:52.560
a bit over zealous and a bit overworried. I do

1864
01:42:53.600 --> 01:42:56.960
enjoy a good worry. I suppose the chill is just

1865
01:42:57.159 --> 01:43:00.119
saying summers goodbye.

1866
01:43:00.159 --> 01:43:07.960
Ka Fire please, Quiet please?

1867
01:43:10.079 --> 01:43:11.039
Mm hmmm.

1868
01:43:17.119 --> 01:43:17.239
Uh.

1869
01:43:32.800 --> 01:43:37.720
The American Broadcasting Company presents Quiet Please, which is written

1870
01:43:37.800 --> 01:43:41.800
and directed by Willis Cooper, which features Ernest Chappell.

1871
01:43:42.640 --> 01:43:47.159
Quiet Please for today is called Summer Goodbye.

1872
01:43:50.159 --> 01:43:50.479
Mm hm.

1873
01:43:55.560 --> 01:43:59.039
The last stop light, the last traffic lights is very

1874
01:43:59.079 --> 01:44:02.920
supposed able of crosses van Sura Sherman Oaks. The next

1875
01:44:03.000 --> 01:44:07.079
one's only forty miles northwest of Camarillo, so we felt

1876
01:44:07.079 --> 01:44:08.560
pretty sure there'd be nothing to.

1877
01:44:08.520 --> 01:44:11.680
Stop us for a long time. And even though they

1878
01:44:11.680 --> 01:44:13.119
weren't very far behind.

1879
01:44:12.960 --> 01:44:16.119
Us, then I knew most of the side roads, I

1880
01:44:16.239 --> 01:44:19.319
wasn't sure they did. I thought of the road the

1881
01:44:19.319 --> 01:44:22.199
branches off the Hidden Valley Road that goes the other

1882
01:44:22.239 --> 01:44:24.960
way from Lake Sherwood, and I thought of the East

1883
01:44:25.000 --> 01:44:28.199
Potrero Road that goes down to the coast road finally

1884
01:44:28.319 --> 01:44:31.239
leads previously over through the sand dunes of an Amy.

1885
01:44:32.439 --> 01:44:35.560
I was afraid they might know that way. And then

1886
01:44:35.560 --> 01:44:39.479
I remembered last famous canyon. I remember the little house

1887
01:44:39.520 --> 01:44:41.039
way up under the hills, the place we used to

1888
01:44:41.039 --> 01:44:44.199
call Jangrela, and I was sure they wouldn't know that place.

1889
01:44:46.000 --> 01:44:47.840
Now you need a place to hide out, in in

1890
01:44:47.960 --> 01:44:49.560
the back of your car is loaded down with two

1891
01:44:49.600 --> 01:44:51.800
satchels full of money that used to belong to somebody else,

1892
01:44:53.399 --> 01:44:57.359
And there's bright fresh blood on the handle of onb

1893
01:45:09.079 --> 01:45:13.039
The last days of summer in California, the time when

1894
01:45:13.039 --> 01:45:17.359
you know it's summer goodbye, when the rains are sweeping

1895
01:45:17.479 --> 01:45:19.800
down from the northwest where they've been gathering up over

1896
01:45:19.920 --> 01:45:23.640
Runde Fuka, drenching the forests and the north turning the

1897
01:45:23.720 --> 01:45:28.720
snow over the high Sierras, drifting southwards a fiss summer goodbye, and.

1898
01:45:28.800 --> 01:45:31.520
Turn the long brown hills into green past.

1899
01:45:33.359 --> 01:45:35.800
When the little brooks would fill up and overflow their banks,

1900
01:45:37.319 --> 01:45:39.680
the sleepy Los Angeles River would come to life again

1901
01:45:39.760 --> 01:45:43.399
down in the valley, roads would disappear in the mud.

1902
01:45:46.039 --> 01:45:49.039
The last days of summer. Then I knew if we

1903
01:45:49.119 --> 01:45:52.800
could hide away somewhere till the rains came, maybe hard

1904
01:45:52.840 --> 01:45:55.800
put powers, maybe they'd come a day when we could

1905
01:45:55.960 --> 01:45:59.319
pull out again, and that money there used to be

1906
01:45:59.439 --> 01:46:03.760
somebody else, cause it would be ours, not ons.

1907
01:46:03.600 --> 01:46:07.199
Of mind, and not in California either.

1908
01:46:09.800 --> 01:46:12.359
Rang up in the rich rob and do I get

1909
01:46:12.399 --> 01:46:13.439
it almost any day now?

1910
01:46:14.680 --> 01:46:15.840
It certainly doesn't look like it.

1911
01:46:15.920 --> 01:46:19.039
Now does it? Oh, you can't tell in California. So

1912
01:46:20.000 --> 01:46:23.680
that's right. We have been off summer. We get up

1913
01:46:23.680 --> 01:46:24.560
in the canyon there.

1914
01:46:24.640 --> 01:46:24.840
You know.

1915
01:46:26.600 --> 01:46:27.560
I'm afraid of fire.

1916
01:46:28.239 --> 01:46:29.960
Yeah, we had no fires all summer.

1917
01:46:30.680 --> 01:46:31.720
Always takes you way around.

1918
01:46:31.760 --> 01:46:32.760
See if you can see anybody?

1919
01:46:34.680 --> 01:46:38.800
Well, nobody think they got tied up in the traffic.

1920
01:46:38.880 --> 01:46:41.000
That says, then nice filler, But yeah, I hope so

1921
01:46:41.439 --> 01:46:41.800
he too.

1922
01:46:44.720 --> 01:46:46.760
Keep a sharp eye off for motorcycle cops too.

1923
01:46:47.920 --> 01:46:49.600
Wa Ok, we gotta stop the speeding.

1924
01:46:49.800 --> 01:46:51.279
I feel sorry for anybody.

1925
01:46:51.039 --> 01:46:51.520
That tries it.

1926
01:46:51.760 --> 01:46:52.119
Me too.

1927
01:46:54.960 --> 01:46:57.119
I wonder what about that? Wonder what Karen.

1928
01:46:57.119 --> 01:47:00.439
Cat nothing to one here above?

1929
01:47:01.119 --> 01:47:01.560
I guess not.

1930
01:47:03.600 --> 01:47:06.119
I got my handsle thirty and that's hatch or two.

1931
01:47:07.239 --> 01:47:08.680
We can wash when we get up there.

1932
01:47:09.479 --> 01:47:12.399
I there's nobody up there, so do way.

1933
01:47:14.159 --> 01:47:15.439
It'll be too bad if there is.

1934
01:47:17.399 --> 01:47:17.680
Lolla.

1935
01:47:18.880 --> 01:47:20.520
But you didn't get out of it stuck to rain.

1936
01:47:21.479 --> 01:47:24.760
I hope so that will probably get out of pieces were.

1937
01:47:24.880 --> 01:47:25.479
Better for us.

1938
01:47:26.560 --> 01:47:27.640
I wouldn't want to get stuck.

1939
01:47:27.880 --> 01:47:28.560
We won't.

1940
01:47:30.840 --> 01:47:31.960
Take it out to look back.

1941
01:47:33.600 --> 01:47:34.000
Nobody.

1942
01:47:34.119 --> 01:47:38.960
Yes, and I think we're getting away from if we

1943
01:47:39.079 --> 01:47:40.640
don't get stuck behind us truck.

1944
01:47:44.960 --> 01:47:45.600
Yes, what you're doing.

1945
01:47:46.359 --> 01:47:47.520
We have to do better than that.

1946
01:47:48.399 --> 01:47:49.159
How much product?

1947
01:47:49.600 --> 01:47:50.319
So we can off?

1948
01:47:50.359 --> 01:47:51.079
I mean four or.

1949
01:47:51.119 --> 01:47:54.760
Five, six miles maybe more. I'll throw it there over

1950
01:47:54.760 --> 01:48:03.359
the Knoga Park. But let me hear them long ways

1951
01:48:03.399 --> 01:48:06.520
off though. Hang on, we're going places.

1952
01:48:07.039 --> 01:48:12.039
Help you don't blow cut it out. That's that chance.

1953
01:48:13.079 --> 01:48:15.159
Tick to see him, blue denim pants, khaki shirt.

1954
01:48:15.960 --> 01:48:16.640
Take the next.

1955
01:48:18.680 --> 01:48:21.119
Going off fast, sew the boys behind us?

1956
01:48:23.800 --> 01:48:28.159
No, what why do we do if they catch up

1957
01:48:28.199 --> 01:48:28.399
with it?

1958
01:48:28.640 --> 01:48:29.760
They won't catch up with it.

1959
01:48:29.840 --> 01:48:34.960
But what if they do, well, let's say grab us well.

1960
01:48:37.880 --> 01:48:38.239
Topics.

1961
01:48:38.279 --> 01:48:38.760
What do you mean?

1962
01:48:40.119 --> 01:48:42.319
Put the stuff on a platform with a roofe around

1963
01:48:42.319 --> 01:48:46.000
on next Sunday, pull the platform out from unders.

1964
01:48:47.640 --> 01:48:48.880
Yeah, that's what they do to people.

1965
01:48:48.920 --> 01:48:49.840
Let's murder other people.

1966
01:48:50.279 --> 01:48:51.159
I didn't urt anybody.

1967
01:48:51.239 --> 01:48:51.279
Know.

1968
01:48:51.560 --> 01:48:53.800
You were with me when I did. You didn't try

1969
01:48:53.840 --> 01:48:54.279
to stop me.

1970
01:48:55.800 --> 01:48:59.159
You grabbed the statue he was carrying my hand.

1971
01:49:00.119 --> 01:49:01.439
I didn't have a chance to wash them.

1972
01:49:03.439 --> 01:49:04.039
I wish.

1973
01:49:05.680 --> 01:49:07.600
Wish what now they hit taking?

1974
01:49:08.359 --> 01:49:10.239
Yeah, it looks just like the lee we just passed.

1975
01:49:11.640 --> 01:49:14.119
Wish what what wish?

1976
01:49:14.239 --> 01:49:14.800
What? Oh?

1977
01:49:15.039 --> 01:49:16.600
I wish we hadn't done it?

1978
01:49:18.079 --> 01:49:19.680
You want to keep on living in a shack down

1979
01:49:19.680 --> 01:49:20.319
on Temple Street.

1980
01:49:20.359 --> 01:49:22.279
I wish we had the honey.

1981
01:49:22.920 --> 01:49:25.000
Well, he wanted the money, he didn't want us to

1982
01:49:25.039 --> 01:49:27.800
have it. I forget it.

1983
01:49:28.359 --> 01:49:29.319
I can forget it.

1984
01:49:31.079 --> 01:49:32.279
Oh, I think they're getting closer.

1985
01:49:32.840 --> 01:49:33.439
Can you see them?

1986
01:49:34.439 --> 01:49:35.800
There's too many turds in the road.

1987
01:49:36.000 --> 01:49:37.439
Would be a French junction in a minute.

1988
01:49:37.479 --> 01:49:38.079
But we turn off.

1989
01:49:38.479 --> 01:49:40.840
If they follow it, I don't think.

1990
01:49:40.720 --> 01:49:44.319
They will if they don't see his turn Okay, right,

1991
01:49:44.359 --> 01:49:45.119
I'm not venturable.

1992
01:49:45.520 --> 01:49:47.760
If they stop it at somebody, Well, if they follow.

1993
01:49:47.600 --> 01:49:52.479
Us, that got loaded, we'll see the safety.

1994
01:49:52.520 --> 01:49:56.520
So we're really gonna fight it out.

1995
01:49:57.439 --> 01:50:01.680
Else to do honey with that? Just anyway, it's a

1996
01:50:01.760 --> 01:50:02.520
beautiful day.

1997
01:50:03.960 --> 01:50:05.439
Yeah, to die.

1998
01:50:07.119 --> 01:50:10.880
We won't die, baby die, We won't die.

1999
01:50:13.520 --> 01:50:14.399
Look, there's a turn on.

2000
01:50:16.159 --> 01:50:19.399
Hang on, here we go, then.

2001
01:50:23.880 --> 01:50:24.079
Listen.

2002
01:50:24.079 --> 01:50:26.199
If you're gonna feel sorry for anybody, feel sorry for us,

2003
01:50:27.960 --> 01:50:30.560
so you'll look so all look alike, blue denim pants,

2004
01:50:30.640 --> 01:50:31.479
khaki shirts.

2005
01:50:32.960 --> 01:50:37.680
No what I was just thinking.

2006
01:50:39.119 --> 01:50:41.319
Suppose they stop and that's front of those hitch tips.

2007
01:50:41.359 --> 01:50:42.039
They won't.

2008
01:50:43.560 --> 01:50:48.720
Hey wait a minute, m.

2009
01:50:52.319 --> 01:50:54.560
H what are you gonna do after that?

2010
01:50:54.680 --> 01:50:55.319
Fellow minute?

2011
01:50:56.560 --> 01:50:59.359
Hand me the pistols, shut up, stick your head out

2012
01:50:59.359 --> 01:51:01.000
and yellow ask him.

2013
01:51:00.880 --> 01:51:03.840
To come here. I think we're gonna pick him up.

2014
01:51:04.640 --> 01:51:10.720
Do what I tell you, h rebe Yeah, back up

2015
01:51:10.720 --> 01:51:11.359
a little ways.

2016
01:51:14.119 --> 01:51:14.840
I don't see him.

2017
01:51:14.840 --> 01:51:15.720
No, he was right there.

2018
01:51:15.800 --> 01:51:17.239
He was standing by that live oak tree.

2019
01:51:18.079 --> 01:51:19.640
Well he's going he can't.

2020
01:51:21.159 --> 01:51:21.399
Listen.

2021
01:51:22.800 --> 01:51:23.039
Go on.

2022
01:51:25.720 --> 01:51:27.039
Hanging on to your hat, baby.

2023
01:51:37.159 --> 01:51:40.399
We made it around the corner of French Junction Diamond

2024
01:51:40.439 --> 01:51:44.239
Last Vahamu's Canyon Road. We passed the big yellow sign

2025
01:51:44.319 --> 01:51:47.439
no smoking your fires. Beyond this point we heard the

2026
01:51:47.520 --> 01:51:48.079
sirens of the.

2027
01:51:48.079 --> 01:51:50.399
Police cards screaming their way on up and durable of

2028
01:51:50.479 --> 01:51:51.119
heart away.

2029
01:51:50.960 --> 01:51:51.359
From its.

2030
01:51:53.199 --> 01:51:58.319
Yeah. We breathed alongside relief, slow last to a respectable

2031
01:51:58.720 --> 01:52:02.479
thirty miles an hour in the dust among the sunflowers.

2032
01:52:06.800 --> 01:52:09.960
Down the winding road, past the ouf top of the

2033
01:52:10.039 --> 01:52:12.239
fields and the side road that leads down to the creek.

2034
01:52:14.560 --> 01:52:16.960
Down the winding road past the steep with a path

2035
01:52:17.039 --> 01:52:21.399
that leads up the last Rahmous schoolhouse to safely un

2036
01:52:21.520 --> 01:52:23.840
past the barn when the dog comes out and bites

2037
01:52:24.079 --> 01:52:29.359
at tired. Down the winding road under the trees.

2038
01:52:31.000 --> 01:52:32.439
To the temper eucalyptus at.

2039
01:52:32.319 --> 01:52:37.760
The clenter of Curence Grounds ranch and sharp turns let

2040
01:52:38.399 --> 01:52:42.680
past the highway fence to the tramp of scrubble where

2041
01:52:42.720 --> 01:52:46.000
you turn off. Across the fields at the bottom of

2042
01:52:46.079 --> 01:52:53.439
the hill, up the Changla, the round through the willows,

2043
01:52:54.760 --> 01:52:56.600
down through the sandy to the creek bed. It's a

2044
01:52:56.760 --> 01:53:04.880
roaring torne when it rains. Across the fields and take

2045
01:53:04.960 --> 01:53:09.520
down the bars in the gate. Up toward the hill,

2046
01:53:12.000 --> 01:53:13.279
through the woods to Shangla.

2047
01:53:14.920 --> 01:53:18.359
What my braces to the hitchhikers everywhere up here to

2048
01:53:18.520 --> 01:53:19.279
where's he going?

2049
01:53:19.279 --> 01:53:21.800
There's nothing up this lake that the house of shangle eyes.

2050
01:53:22.920 --> 01:53:26.720
He's got the same tiny uniform, blue got his shirt,

2051
01:53:27.920 --> 01:53:31.359
no hat to play cups, does no matter. Don't know

2052
01:53:31.840 --> 01:53:32.720
how it's the same man.

2053
01:53:34.560 --> 01:53:35.279
You get crazy.

2054
01:53:35.800 --> 01:53:38.439
You don't know how he could place.

2055
01:53:38.239 --> 01:53:38.960
For Then.

2056
01:53:40.600 --> 01:53:41.279
I'll take the gun.

2057
01:53:42.119 --> 01:53:44.720
You're gonna pick the buck. We're gonna stop.

2058
01:53:46.439 --> 01:53:47.199
I'm gonna stop.

2059
01:53:47.880 --> 01:54:06.840
Tell me, yeah, no good, no good, We're stuck.

2060
01:54:08.359 --> 01:54:11.079
Ah listen, going up there and get that sued to

2061
01:54:11.119 --> 01:54:11.800
come and give us a hand.

2062
01:54:11.800 --> 01:54:12.399
Will your mind live?

2063
01:54:13.039 --> 01:54:14.760
Tell him we'll give him a rod.

2064
01:54:15.840 --> 01:54:16.239
Hurry up.

2065
01:54:16.279 --> 01:54:17.760
The longer we sit here, the people will be in

2066
01:54:17.840 --> 01:54:18.159
the sand.

2067
01:54:18.239 --> 01:54:19.680
Here all right, I think it's snappy.

2068
01:54:19.680 --> 01:54:20.600
I wanted to get out of here.

2069
01:54:23.600 --> 01:54:24.760
Don't give him a ride all the d.

2070
01:54:26.720 --> 01:54:30.399
H right, you think if they can get him and

2071
01:54:31.039 --> 01:54:32.000
gam de plesure?

2072
01:54:33.000 --> 01:54:35.560
Now, yeah, what's the matter?

2073
01:54:43.439 --> 01:54:44.880
I can't find him anywhere.

2074
01:54:48.039 --> 01:54:48.680
In sight of it?

2075
01:55:00.079 --> 01:55:00.279
Yeah?

2076
01:55:03.119 --> 01:55:04.079
Well I was scared too.

2077
01:55:06.359 --> 01:55:06.800
You think.

2078
01:55:08.720 --> 01:55:13.439
I find yourself? Sometimes, Try water and.

2079
01:55:13.439 --> 01:55:14.479
A man in broad daylight.

2080
01:55:16.000 --> 01:55:19.079
Try carrying away two sexuals full of mud with a

2081
01:55:19.119 --> 01:55:20.159
dozen people watching you.

2082
01:55:22.239 --> 01:55:25.239
And try racing across the countryside with a frecking woman

2083
01:55:26.399 --> 01:55:28.960
in a fast car and three collared the cops right

2084
01:55:29.000 --> 01:55:29.359
behind you.

2085
01:55:31.159 --> 01:55:33.680
Get stuck in a sand twenty miles from no place,

2086
01:55:35.159 --> 01:55:36.600
somebody watching you, and then.

2087
01:55:38.359 --> 01:55:39.279
Disappearing when you go.

2088
01:55:39.359 --> 01:55:39.920
Looking for him.

2089
01:55:41.680 --> 01:55:45.640
Sure, I'm sure you'll be just as scared as I was.

2090
01:55:50.159 --> 01:55:56.640
Late timmer afternoon, flat and lazy, the smell of eucalyptus

2091
01:55:56.720 --> 01:56:01.640
trees around you, not a sound to reach you, how

2092
01:56:01.680 --> 01:56:03.199
to sound except the scrape.

2093
01:56:02.840 --> 01:56:03.399
Of the shoveler.

2094
01:56:03.479 --> 01:56:06.600
Get dig and dig and dig at the sand.

2095
01:56:06.399 --> 01:56:11.600
To keep shifting under the wheels, And your wife standing

2096
01:56:11.640 --> 01:56:15.159
there with a gun if you watch to get who,

2097
01:56:17.439 --> 01:56:20.039
And the afternoon's shadows growing longer and longer, and a

2098
01:56:20.079 --> 01:56:22.000
little breeze coming up to rest of the leaves and

2099
01:56:22.079 --> 01:56:25.399
make you think you're not hoo's creeping up on your head.

2100
01:56:25.439 --> 01:56:26.760
You to throw it on a gun on you and say,

2101
01:56:26.840 --> 01:56:28.640
come out with me, kids, let us hang here for

2102
01:56:28.800 --> 01:56:34.119
robbery and murder. And you know all you want is

2103
01:56:34.159 --> 01:56:36.000
to get up there to the deserted old house and

2104
01:56:36.319 --> 01:56:39.680
stablish your way to sashls of money and just lie.

2105
01:56:39.760 --> 01:56:41.560
Lord of the rains come and accompass, stay in the

2106
01:56:41.600 --> 01:56:45.279
station house, and the creak and the rain hide you

2107
01:56:45.359 --> 01:56:48.319
as you creep out and up that highway to a

2108
01:56:48.359 --> 01:56:52.439
boat that's gonna take you and the money and her to.

2109
01:56:52.520 --> 01:56:56.039
Waste some place where they will never, never, never find you.

2110
01:56:59.239 --> 01:57:01.159
Well, you got plenty to think about while you're digging,

2111
01:57:01.199 --> 01:57:03.119
and the shadows crawl on the hillside to it.

2112
01:57:04.159 --> 01:57:06.560
You wonder if she'll ever be done and get out

2113
01:57:06.600 --> 01:57:12.119
of there. I'm gonna try it sometimes, his old friend.

2114
01:57:14.640 --> 01:57:16.640
Yes, everything's got there in sometime, And at last the

2115
01:57:16.680 --> 01:57:18.520
back wheels free and you get back in.

2116
01:57:19.720 --> 01:57:23.439
And you ease yourself out of there, and it's dark now.

2117
01:57:23.520 --> 01:57:26.000
Age you take that winding little trail up between the hills.

2118
01:57:26.000 --> 01:57:29.159
It's so hard to see even the take time, there's

2119
01:57:29.199 --> 01:57:30.039
somebody watching it.

2120
01:57:31.000 --> 01:57:34.359
Yourself to stop it up in the dark, the bright

2121
01:57:34.479 --> 01:57:35.960
lights on and everybody.

2122
01:57:35.640 --> 01:57:38.720
Within twenty miles up here. It'll be all right.

2123
01:57:38.800 --> 01:57:39.399
With these lights.

2124
01:57:40.319 --> 01:57:42.520
You can't get off the trail unless.

2125
01:57:42.239 --> 01:57:44.079
We saw it down the hillstone, you won't fall.

2126
01:57:46.279 --> 01:57:48.039
Somebody's where you cut it out.

2127
01:57:51.600 --> 01:57:52.960
Well, there's nothing to be scared of.

2128
01:57:53.239 --> 01:57:54.079
I know that's.

2129
01:57:56.239 --> 01:58:02.720
Deer dere all around here. I know what they looked like.

2130
01:58:03.399 --> 01:58:04.239
Somebody's scary.

2131
01:58:04.319 --> 01:58:05.199
It was only a peer?

2132
01:58:07.520 --> 01:58:08.399
How much butter is?

2133
01:58:08.439 --> 01:58:09.720
It knows only a little way?

2134
01:58:09.840 --> 01:58:09.960
Now?

2135
01:58:11.760 --> 01:58:13.079
Do you remember this turn? Don't you?

2136
01:58:13.600 --> 01:58:17.960
I don't remember anything except I'm tired and cold and hungry.

2137
01:58:20.279 --> 01:58:21.960
I give you something to remember when we're living on

2138
01:58:22.119 --> 01:58:26.119
some nice, warm island down the south specific somewhere six

2139
01:58:26.199 --> 01:58:27.479
thousand miles away from here.

2140
01:58:28.279 --> 01:58:30.880
We ever get there, what'd you say?

2141
01:58:31.319 --> 01:58:33.920
If we ever get there, we'll get there.

2142
01:58:36.359 --> 01:58:42.079
No, Well do you think those that.

2143
01:58:42.239 --> 01:58:43.920
Hitch tiger would be a top not?

2144
01:58:44.520 --> 01:58:46.159
Well? Who was he some I'm listening.

2145
01:58:46.239 --> 01:58:47.039
That wasn't the same guy?

2146
01:58:47.119 --> 01:58:47.560
You're crazy?

2147
01:58:47.680 --> 01:58:48.520
Why y'all know he's here?

2148
01:58:49.119 --> 01:58:49.880
Well, that's silly.

2149
01:58:50.640 --> 01:58:52.079
How could he get ahead of us? All the time

2150
01:58:52.159 --> 01:58:53.960
I was doing seventy five eighty miles an hour.

2151
01:58:54.039 --> 01:58:54.600
He was walking.

2152
01:58:55.000 --> 01:58:58.000
Maybe I can't hear you, I said, maybe he was walking.

2153
01:58:58.479 --> 01:58:59.119
You're crazy.

2154
01:58:59.199 --> 01:59:00.479
Maybe what if.

2155
01:59:02.039 --> 01:59:03.039
How could you get past this?

2156
01:59:03.920 --> 01:59:04.960
We'd have seen him past.

2157
01:59:06.439 --> 01:59:07.079
Cut it out.

2158
01:59:10.239 --> 01:59:12.279
Just a snake in the road, do you run over?

2159
01:59:13.800 --> 01:59:14.000
Yeah?

2160
01:59:16.279 --> 01:59:18.560
I just luck to kill us, think us snake.

2161
01:59:18.640 --> 01:59:22.199
It brings rain. That's what we want. I hate to

2162
01:59:22.239 --> 01:59:27.239
see the summer go away, not me. Summer good bye,

2163
01:59:27.319 --> 01:59:30.039
that's what I say, good riddance.

2164
01:59:31.039 --> 01:59:31.680
I want rain.

2165
01:59:34.159 --> 01:59:35.159
I wish you could get there.

2166
01:59:35.800 --> 01:59:40.199
Yeah, that's just up this little slope, honey, and then

2167
01:59:40.239 --> 01:59:40.760
we can rest.

2168
01:59:41.960 --> 01:59:44.439
Oh, now, me too.

2169
01:59:45.520 --> 01:59:46.319
We've had a day.

2170
01:59:48.640 --> 01:59:49.439
Yeah, I'll see.

2171
01:59:51.039 --> 01:59:52.359
If you want some coffee?

2172
01:59:52.399 --> 01:59:53.000
No coffee?

2173
01:59:53.279 --> 01:59:54.079
Why not fire?

2174
01:59:55.760 --> 01:59:57.079
I'm gonna build a fire up here?

2175
01:59:57.520 --> 02:00:01.479
Why the blossom fire? Right about that time?

2176
02:00:01.960 --> 02:00:03.159
What's side trying to said?

2177
02:00:03.359 --> 02:00:04.880
Smoke and no fire? You understand?

2178
02:00:04.960 --> 02:00:08.600
And I'm not bad. Somebody might see it. Anybody you

2179
02:00:08.640 --> 02:00:11.560
ever see it? Rush fire up here in the canyons. No,

2180
02:00:12.119 --> 02:00:13.560
you don't want to see one, believe me.

2181
02:00:14.479 --> 02:00:16.520
I guess there's only the one road to get out,

2182
02:00:16.600 --> 02:00:20.520
see I know. And we drive right into the hands

2183
02:00:20.560 --> 02:00:21.079
of the cops.

2184
02:00:21.720 --> 02:00:24.399
Yeah, a good rains.

2185
02:00:25.800 --> 02:00:26.520
It'll be all right.

2186
02:00:27.920 --> 02:00:32.600
It doesn't feel much like rain now. So isn't this

2187
02:00:32.720 --> 02:00:33.039
the plate?

2188
02:00:33.239 --> 02:00:34.760
I think it's a couple of hundred yards more.

2189
02:00:35.720 --> 02:00:38.279
No, wait, there's a rush shaped like a bell.

2190
02:00:39.840 --> 02:00:43.239
Sure, that's right, My gosh, I nearly got lost.

2191
02:00:43.279 --> 02:00:44.920
But you can't go much farther to the canyon. I

2192
02:00:45.279 --> 02:00:45.880
can't the house.

2193
02:00:46.000 --> 02:00:57.560
Sure, Hey, that's different here tonight. Nobody's there, isn't anybody.

2194
02:00:57.640 --> 02:00:58.039
Don't worry.

2195
02:00:58.880 --> 02:00:59.239
I don't know.

2196
02:01:00.560 --> 02:01:05.600
That's kaly, I forget why this is good?

2197
02:01:07.239 --> 02:01:10.520
Good park here. You go ahead and unlock the door.

2198
02:01:10.520 --> 02:01:11.840
I'll get the stuff up and bring it up.

2199
02:01:13.399 --> 02:01:14.720
Flashlight in the glove compartment.

2200
02:01:16.359 --> 02:01:17.199
You go unlock it.

2201
02:01:18.079 --> 02:01:21.199
Scared right, all right?

2202
02:01:21.439 --> 02:01:26.199
Right off, go ahead, one. We're all alone here, and

2203
02:01:26.520 --> 02:01:28.279
this will be all over in a couple of days.

2204
02:01:28.319 --> 02:01:34.199
And it's a hope for this south. Go ahead, I'll

2205
02:01:34.239 --> 02:01:38.039
be right behind me, all right, lunch.

2206
02:01:37.880 --> 02:01:39.319
Off for snakes, I will.

2207
02:01:50.439 --> 02:01:50.920
That's the matter?

2208
02:01:52.000 --> 02:01:52.680
Where's that gun?

2209
02:01:55.159 --> 02:01:56.279
What's the matter is that somebody?

2210
02:02:10.760 --> 02:02:14.279
The house is gone? I said, The house is gone,

2211
02:02:14.319 --> 02:02:14.680
she said.

2212
02:02:16.000 --> 02:02:17.039
And the house was gone.

2213
02:02:18.319 --> 02:02:19.880
I saw it three and a half months before, and

2214
02:02:19.960 --> 02:02:22.560
it was there, a little framed cabin, three rooms, a

2215
02:02:22.600 --> 02:02:23.720
little porch, and a chine.

2216
02:02:23.479 --> 02:02:25.079
As big as I I know.

2217
02:02:25.199 --> 02:02:29.439
It was there then, But in the darkness that night

2218
02:02:30.600 --> 02:02:31.199
it was gone.

2219
02:02:31.239 --> 02:02:33.359
Friend, I don't know.

2220
02:02:33.399 --> 02:02:35.359
I checked up at a lone uphilliptus tree that stood

2221
02:02:35.359 --> 02:02:39.159
alongside the porch. The tree was there, the house was gone.

2222
02:02:40.399 --> 02:02:42.079
It wasn't the slightest sign that the house had ever

2223
02:02:42.119 --> 02:02:44.439
stood there, nothing dug up, no degree of any kind,

2224
02:02:44.560 --> 02:02:48.479
no sign had ever been a house. There in the

2225
02:02:48.520 --> 02:02:53.279
blom starlight in the middle of the knife, and my

2226
02:02:53.399 --> 02:02:56.119
wife and me looking at it, me holding a satcher

2227
02:02:56.199 --> 02:02:59.920
full of money in one hand and a loaded cop

2228
02:03:00.279 --> 02:03:04.600
pistol in the other, and top that friend.

2229
02:03:06.479 --> 02:03:07.880
The medal started to cry.

2230
02:03:10.600 --> 02:03:12.920
Well, I'll be took us to the wrong slave.

2231
02:03:14.359 --> 02:03:15.039
I wonder if I.

2232
02:03:16.520 --> 02:03:17.359
Oh, I couldn't have.

2233
02:03:18.520 --> 02:03:21.399
I don't ever insured that trail metal and no recognize

2234
02:03:21.399 --> 02:03:22.159
the rock that looks like I.

2235
02:03:24.000 --> 02:03:25.399
Didn't I what recognize it?

2236
02:03:26.239 --> 02:03:28.800
I thought, it's where is the house?

2237
02:03:28.920 --> 02:03:29.279
I don't know.

2238
02:03:29.439 --> 02:03:31.159
Somebody must have torn it down and taken it away.

2239
02:03:31.880 --> 02:03:34.000
Don't look as if there ever was a house here.

2240
02:03:34.560 --> 02:03:37.640
You can't see in the dark. This is the place,

2241
02:03:37.680 --> 02:03:40.159
all right, This is shangri Lama.

2242
02:03:40.520 --> 02:03:44.359
I'm scared. Let's get out of here, Get out of here.

2243
02:03:44.279 --> 02:03:48.159
And go where though, Oh no, what we do for

2244
02:03:48.359 --> 02:03:50.479
the love there give me that flash?

2245
02:03:50.520 --> 02:03:52.119
I can't slight.

2246
02:03:54.720 --> 02:03:58.800
It's that over there. Looks like somebody's had a camp

2247
02:03:58.880 --> 02:03:59.319
fire here.

2248
02:04:01.760 --> 02:04:05.079
Yeah, that's what it's gone.

2249
02:04:06.279 --> 02:04:08.840
I'll oh.

2250
02:04:09.199 --> 02:04:11.119
The people that tore down the house probably filled it

2251
02:04:11.199 --> 02:04:13.920
to burn up rubbish. That's probably don't.

2252
02:04:13.800 --> 02:04:15.640
Find anything, can't know a shudder?

2253
02:04:16.279 --> 02:04:16.920
What are you gonna do?

2254
02:04:18.880 --> 02:04:21.760
Nothing else to do? The back of sleep in the car.

2255
02:04:22.359 --> 02:04:23.159
With those bags.

2256
02:04:24.000 --> 02:04:27.880
When the wind of the blood, blood and the money, baby,

2257
02:04:28.439 --> 02:04:29.640
I will be able to sleep a week.

2258
02:04:30.600 --> 02:04:31.760
I said you were stired.

2259
02:04:31.880 --> 02:04:33.680
I sitting asleep on a bunk in the house.

2260
02:04:34.560 --> 02:04:36.479
Do what became and turns down.

2261
02:04:36.600 --> 02:04:38.239
I told you you talk as if I owned it

2262
02:04:38.399 --> 02:04:38.720
or something.

2263
02:04:39.119 --> 02:04:39.880
I don't go for it.

2264
02:04:40.039 --> 02:04:42.319
Look, sweetheart, where two.

2265
02:04:42.319 --> 02:04:44.319
Jumps ahead of the cops were loaded with two bags

2266
02:04:44.359 --> 02:04:44.680
of money.

2267
02:04:45.560 --> 02:04:47.239
They saw us knock off that guard. What do you

2268
02:04:47.279 --> 02:04:47.560
want to do?

2269
02:04:48.319 --> 02:04:49.960
Go to a hotel in Santa Barbara.

2270
02:04:52.359 --> 02:04:53.279
Don't be a jerk.

2271
02:04:54.039 --> 02:04:59.439
I'm sorry, I'm putting myself. No, h.

2272
02:05:02.079 --> 02:05:02.640
That's sick.

2273
02:05:02.840 --> 02:05:03.439
Good ship.

2274
02:05:05.600 --> 02:05:07.239
I hope you don't have to stay here very long.

2275
02:05:08.520 --> 02:05:15.319
It'll rain any day now. Summer is over, baby, I

2276
02:05:15.560 --> 02:05:17.319
come on back to the car. I'm out on my feet.

2277
02:05:18.199 --> 02:05:20.119
I wonder what that place down?

2278
02:05:21.720 --> 02:05:24.920
That man shut it out these a million miles away

2279
02:05:25.000 --> 02:05:25.399
from here.

2280
02:05:31.159 --> 02:05:32.039
There was a rifle shot.

2281
02:05:33.399 --> 02:05:37.359
I wonder getting the car out, I'm getting the cart

2282
02:05:37.760 --> 02:05:38.279
it out.

2283
02:05:41.359 --> 02:05:46.800
I'm hearing anything, Baby, somebody's out taking a pot shot

2284
02:05:46.840 --> 02:05:49.800
of the beer. Get inside the car. You hurt me,

2285
02:05:51.600 --> 02:05:52.399
and send anybody?

2286
02:05:53.600 --> 02:05:55.520
What fuck?

2287
02:05:59.720 --> 02:06:00.880
M fair?

2288
02:06:16.439 --> 02:06:19.439
Where he stead on the little slope of the hill

2289
02:06:19.439 --> 02:06:22.960
above him behind us, The mist was drifting over the stars,

2290
02:06:23.000 --> 02:06:26.720
but I couldn't mistake him. Tacky's shirt bluely lively vised

2291
02:06:26.840 --> 02:06:31.520
no hat, rifle in his hand. I shouted at him,

2292
02:06:31.560 --> 02:06:32.239
but he didn't even.

2293
02:06:32.119 --> 02:06:36.720
Look down at me. He raised his rifle fired.

2294
02:06:37.880 --> 02:06:40.039
Immediately there was an answering dropped from somewhere over the

2295
02:06:40.119 --> 02:06:44.479
hills flow us. Madam was along alongside the cap crying.

2296
02:06:44.520 --> 02:06:49.960
I stood there, stood there, unable to move. And he

2297
02:06:50.039 --> 02:06:54.680
started down the hill toward us, and then a sudden

2298
02:06:54.760 --> 02:06:57.640
flory of shocks in the distance, like a chart in

2299
02:06:57.680 --> 02:07:00.880
an old time silent movie. He sumbled and fell down

2300
02:07:00.920 --> 02:07:04.600
the hill chartis and I could see this spreading stain

2301
02:07:04.680 --> 02:07:06.720
across his canty shirt ands starlight.

2302
02:07:07.840 --> 02:07:08.920
And took his step toward him.

2303
02:07:10.640 --> 02:07:11.560
He didn't even look at me.

2304
02:07:13.439 --> 02:07:18.680
Painfully, oh so painfully, he grew himself up on his knees,

2305
02:07:20.039 --> 02:07:23.800
aimed the longest time, and he hired.

2306
02:07:23.560 --> 02:07:24.279
One shot.

2307
02:07:25.960 --> 02:07:28.640
Madeleine Madelon.

2308
02:07:28.680 --> 02:07:31.520
I yelled, and all I could hear in the dark

2309
02:07:31.640 --> 02:07:33.920
was her button resting breath. And then I reached her.

2310
02:07:34.880 --> 02:07:38.319
Her sweater was black with blood. She could only get.

2311
02:07:40.840 --> 02:07:42.520
I raised the pistol an injured that the man who

2312
02:07:42.520 --> 02:07:45.159
had murdered my wife, and I pressed the trigger once, twice,

2313
02:07:46.039 --> 02:07:49.319
three four times. The man stood up again, and I

2314
02:07:49.359 --> 02:07:52.039
saw the bullet hit him in the starlight, and he

2315
02:07:52.079 --> 02:07:57.760
didn't even cringe. Silently, deliberately he reached in his pocket,

2316
02:07:57.800 --> 02:08:01.239
pulled out a match and struck it went down to

2317
02:08:01.279 --> 02:08:05.479
set fire to the summer dry grass. And how the

2318
02:08:05.560 --> 02:08:09.600
second the scene was bright as day, racing fire roared

2319
02:08:09.640 --> 02:08:11.159
of me or hard. We had time to snatch up

2320
02:08:11.279 --> 02:08:14.560
that on the hurry with the car shot away back where.

2321
02:08:14.399 --> 02:08:16.720
We came from. There was nothing else to do.

2322
02:08:18.479 --> 02:08:32.960
Time at Christian Canon trail of car Pere.

2323
02:08:26.760 --> 02:08:27.279
Hanging at it.

2324
02:08:28.319 --> 02:08:32.279
Time through the pan down did the sandy creek hire

2325
02:08:32.319 --> 02:08:36.720
always at our heels. And then just as we crossed

2326
02:08:36.760 --> 02:08:38.680
the creek, the.

2327
02:08:38.840 --> 02:08:45.840
Rain began, un blessed rain, who was to have saved us?

2328
02:08:46.720 --> 02:08:52.000
Now that we'd been in Goodbye to summer, and at

2329
02:08:52.079 --> 02:08:58.000
the corners, good by the ranch, the police car was waiting,

2330
02:09:00.359 --> 02:09:11.399
and Madeline was dead. I told them under their guns,

2331
02:09:12.720 --> 02:09:16.239
and I could see they didn't believe me. I dabbled

2332
02:09:16.279 --> 02:09:19.239
about the rain, how it put out the fire, how

2333
02:09:19.279 --> 02:09:20.199
the house was gone.

2334
02:09:22.039 --> 02:09:22.600
They laughed.

2335
02:09:24.760 --> 02:09:27.600
And then it was morning, when it was broad daylight,

2336
02:09:29.199 --> 02:09:31.920
we went back up the canyon, up the twisting trail,

2337
02:09:33.760 --> 02:09:38.239
and there was no sign of fire, me and the police.

2338
02:09:40.359 --> 02:09:44.920
And when we got there from the daylight there was

2339
02:09:44.960 --> 02:09:50.720
the house, just because it always had been, and there

2340
02:09:50.760 --> 02:09:54.640
hasn't been any fire, not the night before anyway.

2341
02:10:02.840 --> 02:10:07.399
One of the police officers told me about it. Remember,

2342
02:10:08.520 --> 02:10:09.239
or maybe you don't.

2343
02:10:10.199 --> 02:10:12.199
Twenty seven years ago there was a fellow murdered a

2344
02:10:12.239 --> 02:10:15.840
couple up here and least Perham's Canyon, he said, and.

2345
02:10:15.920 --> 02:10:16.760
He hid away up here.

2346
02:10:18.119 --> 02:10:21.920
Twenty seven years ago, he said, NATOSSI came on him

2347
02:10:21.960 --> 02:10:24.920
at knighte and he killed him, but he managed to

2348
02:10:24.960 --> 02:10:25.279
set the.

2349
02:10:25.279 --> 02:10:28.039
Grass on fire that night it burned out the whole countryside.

2350
02:10:28.079 --> 02:10:28.359
He said.

2351
02:10:30.159 --> 02:10:33.520
He was a bad man, he said, right up here.

2352
02:10:35.520 --> 02:10:37.079
I remember him so well. A hitchhiker.

2353
02:10:37.159 --> 02:10:39.399
He was wore a pair of Levi's and the khaki shirt.

2354
02:10:41.640 --> 02:10:42.600
Remember him very well, he.

2355
02:10:42.600 --> 02:10:46.319
Said, so do I.

2356
02:11:21.479 --> 02:11:26.039
The title of today is Quiet Please, story is Summer Goodbye.

2357
02:11:26.960 --> 02:11:29.760
It was written and directed by Willis Cooper, The Man

2358
02:11:29.760 --> 02:11:32.119
who Spoke to You, with Ernest Chapel.

2359
02:11:32.840 --> 02:11:38.399
And Kathleen Cradell played the part of Madeline. Music for

2360
02:11:38.520 --> 02:11:39.960
Quiet Please is why Albert Brother.

2361
02:11:43.720 --> 02:11:48.199
Well, my dear, I suppose the evening has come to

2362
02:11:48.279 --> 02:11:52.239
an end. Soon the sun will be out, and well,

2363
02:11:53.039 --> 02:11:57.159
I think we all need to return from where we

2364
02:11:57.359 --> 02:12:01.479
came from. So as you make your way home, I

2365
02:12:01.600 --> 02:12:05.840
hope you know you're always welcome here, and I sure

2366
02:12:05.920 --> 02:12:10.159
do hope to see you again very soon. I'll be

2367
02:12:10.319 --> 02:12:16.039
right here, same time, same place. But now I must

2368
02:12:16.079 --> 02:12:19.920
ask one more thing of you. As you make your

2369
02:12:19.960 --> 02:12:24.039
way home, as you wander through the woods, down the roads,

2370
02:12:24.079 --> 02:12:28.399
across the railroad tracks, as you go through the doorway

2371
02:12:28.520 --> 02:12:33.840
of your humble abode, take one moment before you fall asleep,

2372
02:12:34.920 --> 02:12:40.199
and just simply be thankful for what you have. And

2373
02:12:40.399 --> 02:12:43.000
I'll be seeing you soon.

2374
02:13:00.079 --> 02:13:05.279
Rumbling mumbling privately of prevent the

2375
02:13:07.039 --> 02:13:07.520
Volu
