WEBVTT
1
00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:15.320
My dear, come on in, please please, I'm feeling rather jubilant.
2
00:00:16.359 --> 00:00:22.480
As you likely know, the season of the Witch is
3
00:00:22.519 --> 00:00:28.199
approaching very quickly, and I always get a little extra
4
00:00:28.440 --> 00:00:33.679
pep in my step when such a thing occurs. Please
5
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:38.119
please have a seat. The tea is already going. It'll
6
00:00:38.119 --> 00:00:42.759
be nice and warm and comforting as we enjoy something cold,
7
00:00:43.079 --> 00:00:50.759
chilling and upsetting. What's that? Well, I'm not sure, but
8
00:00:51.479 --> 00:00:53.920
I sure am glad to have you here with me.
9
00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:57.759
As the season begins. I think I'll be in a
10
00:00:57.840 --> 00:01:03.280
celebratory mood the entire time. I feel positively as if
11
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:07.439
I had a drink with dionysis.
12
00:01:07.959 --> 00:01:30.280
The CBS Radio Mystery Theater presents. Come in, Welcome.
13
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:32.640
I'm E. G. Marshall.
14
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:39.280
There is no disguise which can for long conceal love
15
00:01:39.959 --> 00:01:44.480
where it exists, or simulate it where it does not,
16
00:01:45.680 --> 00:01:48.719
So said the French philosopher, to which we might add,
17
00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:49.719
there is.
18
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:52.480
No chain so strong, no wall so.
19
00:01:52.359 --> 00:01:56.280
High, but can imprison love when its time has come
20
00:01:56.359 --> 00:01:57.000
to be free?
21
00:01:58.159 --> 00:01:59.599
What is it? It says?
22
00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:05.239
One of this see reap. It is a nuclear warhead.
23
00:02:06.359 --> 00:02:08.080
A nuclear warhead, that.
24
00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:11.560
Is what it says. What can we do with a
25
00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:12.680
nuclear warhead.
26
00:02:13.560 --> 00:02:17.840
What can we do? We can sell it, sell it?
27
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:21.800
Oh what water purchase a nuclear warhead?
28
00:02:29.879 --> 00:02:33.439
Our mystery drama A Drink with Dionysius was written especially
29
00:02:33.479 --> 00:02:37.840
for the Mystery Theater by Sam Dan and stars Fred Gwynn.
30
00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:42.080
It is sponsored in part by Buick Motor Division and
31
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:46.960
arm Allergy Relief Medicine. I'll be back shortly with that
32
00:02:47.080 --> 00:03:01.479
one breeze there, the man with souls so dead, who
33
00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:06.759
never to himself had said, this is my own, my
34
00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:12.960
native land. I'm not sure. They seem to be such cynical.
35
00:03:12.599 --> 00:03:18.159
Skeptical times, so alien to honest sentiment, so impatient with
36
00:03:18.280 --> 00:03:23.479
the traditional values. But perhaps it's all oppose. Perhaps underneath,
37
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:28.159
as the songwriter said, every heart beats true under red,
38
00:03:28.240 --> 00:03:32.439
white and blue. Well, our mission today is to examine
39
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:36.560
the heart of a most unlikely patriot, one Sprinkles Magoon,
40
00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:39.800
and his story should be told by a man who
41
00:03:39.879 --> 00:03:44.439
is both his best friend and his worst enemy, Detective
42
00:03:44.560 --> 00:03:46.680
Sergeant Francis K. Flummer.
43
00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:50.039
I wouldn't say I was Sprinkle's best friend, and since
44
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:54.439
Sprinkles himself was as tereremy, I'm going to fall short there, though,
45
00:03:55.719 --> 00:03:58.960
what you could say without fear of favor is a
46
00:03:59.080 --> 00:04:03.520
Sprinkles was a look and I'm a cop. So from
47
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:07.240
time to time we meet in the way, a routine business,
48
00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:09.960
a lot of Sprinkles.
49
00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:12.879
I do not believe we are acquainted.
50
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:13.759
I feel it.
51
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:17.639
I don't know anything what's done. I have not heard anything,
52
00:04:17.759 --> 00:04:19.000
I have not seen anything.
53
00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:21.480
All right, Sprinkles, how did it hit you?
54
00:04:21.879 --> 00:04:26.160
Nobody has ever treated Sprinkles maccoon. He always pays his
55
00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:29.399
own way. Now, if you will be so kind as
56
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:32.319
to excuse me, I cannot afford to be seen.
57
00:04:32.120 --> 00:04:36.439
In public chattering with the police side. That is the
58
00:04:36.519 --> 00:04:40.639
German language for the cops.
59
00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:47.600
And so we'll go. You know, Sprinkles was doing this and.
60
00:04:47.480 --> 00:04:51.720
That here and now and then they really wasn't bothering
61
00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:56.040
anybody too much. After a while in the department, you learn,
62
00:04:56.120 --> 00:04:59.279
and as far as second things are concerned, it's best to.
63
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:02.879
Live and let let if you know what I mean. Well,
64
00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:05.839
you know, one night I'm sitting at the desk, looking
65
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:06.639
at the clock.
66
00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:09.720
On the wall and the snow on a sidewalk, hoping
67
00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:12.360
that nobody's gonna do anything bad to somebody to laugh
68
00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:14.839
to midnight, at which time my relief will have to
69
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.240
handle it when the phone.
70
00:05:17.079 --> 00:05:23.959
Ringers Plumber Flummer, Yeah, this is sergeant Flummer. Sergeant it
71
00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:28.680
is me. Oh who are you? Is this Sprinkles?
72
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:30.000
Sprinkles?
73
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:35.839
Ooh, Sprinkles, what's up? I Sprinkles? You still laugh?
74
00:05:36.199 --> 00:05:36.399
Yes?
75
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:37.920
I am present.
76
00:05:38.360 --> 00:05:43.639
It is just it is just what it is. Just
77
00:05:44.120 --> 00:05:46.720
I am wondering, wondering about what.
78
00:05:47.240 --> 00:05:49.519
I am wondering. I am doing the right thing.
79
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:51.040
You know what connection?
80
00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:55.160
Get this connection talking with the John Toms?
81
00:05:55.920 --> 00:06:00.639
Why that is the French language work for the cops. Well,
82
00:06:02.759 --> 00:06:05.560
what do you want to talk about? Uh?
83
00:06:05.560 --> 00:06:07.160
Would you like to come up here?
84
00:06:07.800 --> 00:06:08.079
Why?
85
00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:09.399
Why?
86
00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:10.759
Uh?
87
00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:13.079
I I believe I may have.
88
00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:19.839
Killed somebody Sprankles. Therefore, can you come right over? I'm
89
00:06:19.879 --> 00:06:20.399
on my way.
90
00:06:20.839 --> 00:06:21.759
I thank you.
91
00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:23.519
Okay, Well wait wait a minute.
92
00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:25.399
Where are you Sprinkles?
93
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:33.000
Yeah? Well, and yes, that sprinkles.
94
00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:38.480
Yes, I believe I neglected to give you a final.
95
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:40.560
Piece of information. Yes, Sprinkles, where are you?
96
00:06:41.040 --> 00:06:42.160
I am a many age.
97
00:06:42.360 --> 00:06:44.439
Saint Regis please ninety eight?
98
00:06:44.600 --> 00:06:48.439
Saint Regis, probably Sprinkles.
99
00:06:48.439 --> 00:06:49.040
What's going on?
100
00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:54.519
It is big shots, very big shoote.
101
00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:04.199
A Regius place. Sprinkles must have been stepping up in
102
00:07:04.279 --> 00:07:06.519
class or he'd be.
103
00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:09.279
Doing a high rent history. Basically, he was a dip.
104
00:07:09.800 --> 00:07:12.920
You know, a pickpocket. You have to work the crowds.
105
00:07:14.680 --> 00:07:14.720
On.
106
00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:15.160
He ain't.
107
00:07:15.160 --> 00:07:19.439
Saint Regis was a luxury high rise. I flashed my
108
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:22.240
start the flunky, and he run me up in the elevator.
109
00:07:23.639 --> 00:07:24.720
And then patted down.
110
00:07:24.720 --> 00:07:27.399
And think we competent Carverdan come to a stop in
111
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:42.439
front of ten B stargrant Flummer, Sprinkles, what happened here?
112
00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:47.800
That's blood? I help him shut shot. The bullet has
113
00:07:47.879 --> 00:07:50.879
merely fraaced my forehead. You should see the other guy,
114
00:07:51.399 --> 00:07:55.040
one other guy. He is wrest them behind the couch.
115
00:07:56.399 --> 00:07:59.759
H Hey he's dead.
116
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:07.040
Oh yes, she is dick And you killed them, Sprinkles,
117
00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:08.120
Yes you could.
118
00:08:08.920 --> 00:08:12.399
You could say I was the instrument of his departure.
119
00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:15.040
You kill him and here is the gun.
120
00:08:15.639 --> 00:08:18.240
Now look, Sprinkles, this ain't your style.
121
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:21.920
Well have you ever heard it said the leopard will
122
00:08:22.040 --> 00:08:23.319
change his spots? Yeah?
123
00:08:23.399 --> 00:08:25.839
Yeah, yeah, but that's for rapids, not for pussy cats
124
00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:26.160
like him.
125
00:08:26.279 --> 00:08:28.680
You do me and I'm just the sergeant. If you
126
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:32.919
will not believe I vanolated missed the cheery beery who
127
00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:35.639
missed the cheery bery?
128
00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:39.000
Rough for crying o spring Beers you mean, I'm gonna
129
00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:40.320
have to rest you for murder.
130
00:08:40.519 --> 00:08:42.759
I do not know what else you can do.
131
00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:46.960
Maya, howcker you get mixed up in murder?
132
00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:48.639
I did not know it would come to this.
133
00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:51.879
But you're a pit pocket, A good one.
134
00:08:52.039 --> 00:08:54.200
I can no longer earn a'm alice living.
135
00:08:54.240 --> 00:08:59.720
There's a pit pocket. I'm a victim of progress. I
136
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.000
I need a poor pickpocket. He is obsolete. I am
137
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:08.600
the victim of what is called the cashless society.
138
00:09:08.600 --> 00:09:10.519
The cashless society.
139
00:09:10.759 --> 00:09:14.440
Sure there is no longer any cash walking around the street.
140
00:09:15.159 --> 00:09:18.279
You left the wallet. What do you get? Credit cards?
141
00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:20.240
Travelers checks?
142
00:09:20.519 --> 00:09:20.720
Oh?
143
00:09:20.840 --> 00:09:25.360
Yeah, I cannot live on little plastic cards, now, can I?
144
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:25.480
No?
145
00:09:25.639 --> 00:09:26.120
I guess not.
146
00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:29.279
But you still haven't told me why you had to
147
00:09:29.320 --> 00:09:36.720
shoot this mister cheery bery. Yeah, it's this long story,
148
00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:40.120
sprinkles Jabelle, let me hear it.
149
00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:41.840
Just start at the beginning.
150
00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:49.960
Yeah, the beginning. You could say it up again. When
151
00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:54.039
this female individual whose name I shall not reveal but
152
00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:59.000
shall refer to as Boston Sadie and counted me in
153
00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:02.919
the saloon which I shall likewise not to identify, but
154
00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:07.000
which shall here enough to be known as Frisco Charlie's.
155
00:10:07.720 --> 00:10:11.440
Well, look, Colie got here, Sprinkles, magoon.
156
00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:15.720
Sadie, forced than city in the flesh, you have added
157
00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:19.519
a generous amount of thought City marriage life must agree with.
158
00:10:19.679 --> 00:10:21.080
Oh no, it don't.
159
00:10:21.399 --> 00:10:23.559
Oh, Oh, I am truly sorry to.
160
00:10:23.559 --> 00:10:24.840
Get it, Sprinkles.
161
00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:29.240
I got a little proposition, interested.
162
00:10:28.519 --> 00:10:31.279
Boy, Sadie. I thought you were turning honest.
163
00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:36.279
Yeah, said I. You know, the little cottage in the country,
164
00:10:36.440 --> 00:10:40.159
the roses climbing over the fence and whipper wheels.
165
00:10:41.240 --> 00:10:41.919
What's the use?
166
00:10:42.159 --> 00:10:44.200
Oh, I am indeed sorry to get that. There is
167
00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:47.080
a sour note in the symphony of your happiness.
168
00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:49.480
I thought I was marrying a civilian.
169
00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:54.080
So didn't you No a mane of thief, a thief.
170
00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:57.519
I was under the impression that Elwood was an upright,
171
00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:01.679
legitimate member of society with a job. He's not an
172
00:11:01.720 --> 00:11:03.759
honest thief like you and me and the rest of us.
173
00:11:04.120 --> 00:11:05.639
He's the worst kind.
174
00:11:05.879 --> 00:11:06.720
The worst kind.
175
00:11:07.240 --> 00:11:11.240
He's a closet thief. He wants to steal, but he
176
00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:12.000
don't have a nerve.
177
00:11:12.360 --> 00:11:14.399
Oh that is bad.
178
00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:16.639
I thought it to be a new life for me.
179
00:11:17.480 --> 00:11:18.519
On the wedding night he.
180
00:11:18.480 --> 00:11:20.559
Said that, I say, are you sure you would like
181
00:11:20.600 --> 00:11:23.039
to discuss this infimate matter with.
182
00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:27.039
Me, he said, Dalin, and I have a confession to
183
00:11:27.080 --> 00:11:27.320
make me.
184
00:11:27.399 --> 00:11:28.679
Are you sure you want me to listen?
185
00:11:28.759 --> 00:11:32.000
He said, dearest, I want you to show.
186
00:11:31.840 --> 00:11:32.600
Me the ropes.
187
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:37.159
He said that, yeah, all my life, he said, I
188
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:39.799
always wanted to be a cook, but I didn't know how. Please,
189
00:11:39.879 --> 00:11:41.000
my dearest, teach me.
190
00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:42.000
Did you.
191
00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:45.639
There when all my dreams are going straight?
192
00:11:47.240 --> 00:11:48.679
But when you love a guy?
193
00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:49.960
Yeah?
194
00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:54.080
Yeah, I said to him, Angel, you can't just go
195
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:57.679
out and become a thief, especially at you're arranged thirty five.
196
00:11:58.159 --> 00:12:02.360
True, if you possess calling it showed herself in early life,
197
00:12:02.559 --> 00:12:05.159
like ballet benches, violinits.
198
00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:07.559
Yeah, I said, what do you want to be a
199
00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:08.960
safe cracker, a pickpocket?
200
00:12:09.159 --> 00:12:10.840
You gotta first become.
201
00:12:10.519 --> 00:12:12.159
An apprentice, That is a truth.
202
00:12:12.279 --> 00:12:14.039
You gotta work and study day and night.
203
00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:15.320
Oh I remember.
204
00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:17.480
But if that's what you want, I guess I can
205
00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:19.000
support us while you learn.
206
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:21.600
And just where is she attending school?
207
00:12:22.519 --> 00:12:24.080
He don't want to quit his job.
208
00:12:24.840 --> 00:12:27.000
Oh, but how can I quit the job?
209
00:12:27.080 --> 00:12:29.240
He says, I got vacation, sick.
210
00:12:29.159 --> 00:12:31.799
Leave, hospitalization, and in twenty years I get a pension.
211
00:12:31.960 --> 00:12:36.200
Well, those are extremely powerful arguments but he ain't happy,
212
00:12:36.759 --> 00:12:38.519
So what is going to take place?
213
00:12:38.840 --> 00:12:41.919
Well, I figured out how he could get some action
214
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:42.919
in the place where he.
215
00:12:42.919 --> 00:12:46.279
Works, good thinking, And just where is he employed?
216
00:12:46.600 --> 00:12:47.720
On an army base?
217
00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:51.120
Well, I do not understand what is there for steel
218
00:12:51.159 --> 00:12:51.960
on an army base?
219
00:12:52.639 --> 00:12:53.080
Challenge?
220
00:12:53.200 --> 00:13:00.639
No, no, but you're close close pistols? Huh, Well, why
221
00:13:00.679 --> 00:13:02.840
do you say, Sprinkles, What do I say?
222
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:06.639
I say, regretfully, no, thank you.
223
00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:08.960
Forty five caliber automatic.
224
00:13:09.080 --> 00:13:12.600
I am allergic for firearms. I am a peaceful citizen.
225
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:15.000
Plenty of guys are in the market for a nice, new,
226
00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:17.039
shiny forty five caliber automatic.
227
00:13:17.120 --> 00:13:18.679
I just remembered I have disappointment.
228
00:13:18.840 --> 00:13:21.320
Come on, you don't know appointment, but.
229
00:13:21.320 --> 00:13:24.399
I do with a psychiatrist, sprinkle, maybe you'd better see
230
00:13:24.440 --> 00:13:26.559
one though. Also, if you believe you can steal guns
231
00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:27.399
from an army.
232
00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:29.759
Post but I figured how to do it, then.
233
00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:31.840
Permit me to issue the very best of look.
234
00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:33.279
But it needs.
235
00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:35.799
You, Sprinkles, it needs your fingers.
236
00:13:36.120 --> 00:13:36.679
My fingers.
237
00:13:36.799 --> 00:13:39.559
Yeah, we know who carries the keys to the room
238
00:13:39.559 --> 00:13:40.159
where the guns are.
239
00:13:40.200 --> 00:13:44.120
Capper. I am sorry, say listen, there's nothing to it.
240
00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:46.759
I even talked it over, mumbles Penny Feather.
241
00:13:47.159 --> 00:13:47.679
Mumbles.
242
00:13:47.960 --> 00:13:51.039
You have no idea how anxious Mumbles is to get
243
00:13:51.039 --> 00:13:52.399
a hold of some of that hardware.
244
00:13:52.480 --> 00:13:53.639
Let's say they do not.
245
00:13:53.799 --> 00:13:56.360
Mumble said to me we were sitting right at this
246
00:13:56.399 --> 00:14:00.240
table here. He said, you know who would be right
247
00:14:00.320 --> 00:14:03.440
for a job like this, Sprinkles.
248
00:14:02.919 --> 00:14:03.519
The goon.
249
00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:06.000
Mumble.
250
00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:09.720
So he's always had an exaggerated estimation.
251
00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:15.120
Of my dollars, Sprinkles, you're in I guarantee five grand.
252
00:14:15.399 --> 00:14:16.039
Five grand.
253
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:18.120
I need to pick that up in a good week city.
254
00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:20.360
Look, it's waiting for us in a cart, and in
255
00:14:20.440 --> 00:14:24.600
that army storeroom it's packed with forty five caliber pistols.
256
00:14:25.480 --> 00:14:26.759
How do we get it out of there?
257
00:14:27.240 --> 00:14:31.399
You don't worry about that, You just get the keys.
258
00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:38.440
What do you tell them, he sprinkles, You got yourself
259
00:14:38.440 --> 00:14:41.480
into a caper to knock off some pistols from the army.
260
00:14:41.639 --> 00:14:44.039
They do have a lot of them, Sergeanty, You could
261
00:14:44.440 --> 00:14:46.440
you know, you would think with all those autumn pops
262
00:14:46.440 --> 00:14:49.480
and know if they would not require any more small firearms.
263
00:14:50.360 --> 00:14:55.200
How well, never mind that they actually steal the guns. Yes,
264
00:14:55.960 --> 00:15:02.159
how I don't know. I only know what I did, And.
265
00:15:02.240 --> 00:15:03.159
What did you do?
266
00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:12.480
I stole the keys to the keys y is. No
267
00:15:12.519 --> 00:15:16.360
matter how carefully and closely guarded an object may be,
268
00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:20.320
there is always the key that opens the lock that
269
00:15:20.440 --> 00:15:25.559
secures the door. Therefore, one must also carefully guard the key.
270
00:15:26.440 --> 00:15:29.559
It also follows that one must also carefully guard the
271
00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:33.639
person who has access to the key, and one must
272
00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:37.960
also carefully guard all those who what you see where
273
00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:42.240
this goes Somewhere there has to be a weak link.
274
00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:58.279
There is, and the chain snaps enact too. There was
275
00:15:58.360 --> 00:16:01.919
the veil through which I might not see. There was
276
00:16:01.960 --> 00:16:06.360
a door to which I found no key. Such was
277
00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:09.720
a lot of mister Edward Fitzgerald, the poet of the Rubia.
278
00:16:10.279 --> 00:16:12.639
Perhaps he might have found the key had he been
279
00:16:12.679 --> 00:16:16.559
fortunate to enlist the cooperation of our own Sprinkles Magoon,
280
00:16:17.080 --> 00:16:21.759
an expert at finding things, especially when they happened to
281
00:16:21.799 --> 00:16:27.480
be in someone else's pocket. We go forward, now, Sprinkles,
282
00:16:27.759 --> 00:16:31.440
we have to proceed in an orderly fashion. You understand,
283
00:16:31.679 --> 00:16:34.159
without a question, Sergeant Flummer.
284
00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:39.600
Sir Boston say, he arranges to cut you into a
285
00:16:39.679 --> 00:16:43.360
scheme to swipe some forty five caliber pistols from.
286
00:16:43.159 --> 00:16:44.039
An army base.
287
00:16:44.279 --> 00:16:48.639
Right, you are correct, sergeant. Now where's this guy on
288
00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:52.720
the floor? This very dead guy come in.
289
00:16:54.120 --> 00:16:57.720
He does not come in just yet. He don't know.
290
00:16:58.519 --> 00:17:01.200
It is still too early for him to make his appearance.
291
00:17:02.440 --> 00:17:05.759
Nice springles, Where are we?
292
00:17:05.759 --> 00:17:08.920
We are still in first Go Charlie's blah and quill.
293
00:17:10.680 --> 00:17:13.960
I am still engaged in conversation with Boston, Sadi Taught,
294
00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:17.559
and the pros and the cons, the alsos and the babies.
295
00:17:19.119 --> 00:17:21.359
What you were saying to me is that all I
296
00:17:21.440 --> 00:17:24.039
have to do is get the key, right? Is that
297
00:17:24.119 --> 00:17:24.839
what you were saying?
298
00:17:25.279 --> 00:17:28.880
That's the whole grand opera. All you gotta do is
299
00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:29.839
get the key?
300
00:17:30.079 --> 00:17:33.000
Uh? And where does that key happen to be?
301
00:17:33.720 --> 00:17:39.960
In somebody's pocket? Namely Lieutenant Melvin McBride, also known as Moonface.
302
00:17:40.680 --> 00:17:43.519
He has the key to the gun room.
303
00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:46.759
You got to fixture down, pat, you lift the key
304
00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:50.440
to make a wax impression, then you slip the key
305
00:17:50.519 --> 00:17:52.039
back into Moonface's pocket.
306
00:17:52.599 --> 00:17:55.079
You follow this, I follow, I follow, but I do
307
00:17:55.079 --> 00:17:56.759
not know if I like where these go.
308
00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:59.440
Oh you're gonna love it. You'll see that. We'll get
309
00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:03.000
the box with the guns, bring it to you, and
310
00:18:03.160 --> 00:18:06.599
you make the delivery. The Mumbles pick up the cash,
311
00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:08.119
and we're home.
312
00:18:08.359 --> 00:18:11.279
But they will not the guns are gone on it today?
313
00:18:11.559 --> 00:18:12.160
How would they know?
314
00:18:12.640 --> 00:18:12.680
What?
315
00:18:13.079 --> 00:18:14.880
Don't they check up on his situation?
316
00:18:15.160 --> 00:18:15.480
Sure?
317
00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:18.440
But sorely is the inventory clerk?
318
00:18:19.079 --> 00:18:21.119
And the who may I ask?
319
00:18:21.519 --> 00:18:22.279
Is that thor leaf?
320
00:18:22.960 --> 00:18:23.799
My husband?
321
00:18:25.039 --> 00:18:27.279
Oh?
322
00:18:27.359 --> 00:18:28.920
Do we spend the rest of the night showing the
323
00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:31.720
fat or do we say green light?
324
00:18:32.279 --> 00:18:40.440
Leave us go? Then you said let's go. Yeah, right, Sprinkles,
325
00:18:40.640 --> 00:18:42.759
I said leave us go?
326
00:18:43.759 --> 00:18:47.839
And we went where to a place that is named
327
00:18:47.839 --> 00:18:52.039
the Big Burger, Big beggar. Yeah, this is where Lieutenant
328
00:18:52.039 --> 00:18:53.839
Won't facement pipe takes on his lunch.
329
00:18:54.680 --> 00:18:56.400
Don't have a messh or baseball?
330
00:18:56.440 --> 00:18:58.960
What did they do? But this lieutenancy, he finds something
331
00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:00.079
wrong with it?
332
00:19:00.200 --> 00:19:00.880
Something wrong?
333
00:19:01.079 --> 00:19:03.240
Yeah, on the base they serve meals that are full
334
00:19:03.240 --> 00:19:06.160
of proteins and vitamins and all the good things to
335
00:19:06.240 --> 00:19:10.039
give a person rosy cheeks, wear rest, a big burger.
336
00:19:10.359 --> 00:19:14.160
A little town of moon Face is able to consume four.
337
00:19:13.839 --> 00:19:17.000
Big burgers, four fries, two thick masks, an apple pie
338
00:19:17.039 --> 00:19:19.759
and jerry pie. Put chocolate ice cream on the Jurry
339
00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:21.319
pie and vanilla on apple.
340
00:19:23.160 --> 00:19:23.920
That's him.
341
00:19:24.480 --> 00:19:25.119
Lift the key.
342
00:19:25.440 --> 00:19:26.240
It's on a ring.
343
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:28.519
It's gonna have to lift the whole things. Uh, just
344
00:19:28.720 --> 00:19:34.039
which key isn't It don't matter whitch you mean? You
345
00:19:34.039 --> 00:19:35.519
can swipe it off the ring?
346
00:19:35.640 --> 00:19:36.000
Please?
347
00:19:36.039 --> 00:19:36.359
Please?
348
00:19:36.519 --> 00:19:38.359
Which one is it?
349
00:19:38.359 --> 00:19:41.319
It'll be the longest one. But you can't just lift
350
00:19:41.359 --> 00:19:42.720
one key from my clothes ring.
351
00:19:43.240 --> 00:19:43.599
Please?
352
00:19:44.079 --> 00:19:46.400
Why don't you go up and say a social holo
353
00:19:46.400 --> 00:19:48.240
to loot ton of moon face while I go to
354
00:19:48.279 --> 00:19:48.599
work on.
355
00:19:49.880 --> 00:19:54.480
Hello Lieutenna McBride, Hi, theresavelare having your lunch. I see
356
00:19:54.960 --> 00:19:58.880
a haha as merely a snack as it were a snack. Yeah,
357
00:19:59.039 --> 00:20:00.480
just keep body and so to get it.
358
00:20:00.960 --> 00:20:05.359
Oh god, oh, I'm sorry. I saw the home cup
359
00:20:05.400 --> 00:20:08.799
of coffee and it is all over your nice clean uniform. Here,
360
00:20:09.720 --> 00:20:11.640
let me take this napkin a nice all right?
361
00:20:11.720 --> 00:20:13.519
No no, no, no, it is not all right.
362
00:20:13.599 --> 00:20:15.079
We must wipe away all of that.
363
00:20:15.240 --> 00:20:18.160
I have it clean. My burgers and fires are getting cold.
364
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:20.799
I shall have you cleaned in enough time at all.
365
00:20:20.880 --> 00:20:23.519
And my ice cream is getting warm there there there? Oh,
366
00:20:24.279 --> 00:20:28.279
oh it all did get cold, uh, little sister, not
367
00:20:28.400 --> 00:20:30.279
a order to work for this gentleman. Yeah.
368
00:20:30.279 --> 00:20:34.400
Well, now, you, sir, are fighting for our country. You
369
00:20:34.519 --> 00:20:35.599
need all your strength.
370
00:20:35.720 --> 00:20:37.680
Hey you don't have, oh but I do.
371
00:20:37.799 --> 00:20:40.799
I do have to wish for our country. Come on now,
372
00:20:40.880 --> 00:20:42.319
go ahead, lieutenant.
373
00:20:41.839 --> 00:20:42.279
To eat up.
374
00:20:42.519 --> 00:20:44.839
Well, this is very nice, sir, Yeah.
375
00:20:44.759 --> 00:20:46.839
It is because you uphold the flag.
376
00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:51.160
Actually, I just trying to supply round.
377
00:20:51.599 --> 00:20:55.079
Well, they have got a flag in their throat. Ah,
378
00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:59.359
the flag. I remember it was my favorite poem in school.
379
00:21:01.160 --> 00:21:05.640
Sprinkled with white for a cause that is right, sprinkled
380
00:21:05.720 --> 00:21:09.839
with blue for hearts that are true, sprinkled with red
381
00:21:10.240 --> 00:21:15.200
for those that are bread, the undying story of our
382
00:21:15.200 --> 00:21:16.599
own old glory.
383
00:21:17.799 --> 00:21:19.160
That's very noble Salmon.
384
00:21:19.640 --> 00:21:21.880
I would recite that poem so much they gave me
385
00:21:21.920 --> 00:21:26.039
a nickname, Sprinkles. Well, it has been a fighter to
386
00:21:26.079 --> 00:21:29.319
serve you, lieutenant. Enjoy your lunch.
387
00:21:33.720 --> 00:21:36.359
And uh, you got the key?
388
00:21:36.680 --> 00:21:40.240
Oh yeah, while the guy was sitting there, you got
389
00:21:40.240 --> 00:21:44.039
the key off the rain, made the impression and put
390
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:44.480
it back.
391
00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:48.200
It is all how you say in a phase work.
392
00:21:48.839 --> 00:21:51.960
But then why did the din It was up to
393
00:21:52.079 --> 00:21:56.119
Boston City and my husband four leaf and this guy
394
00:21:56.200 --> 00:21:58.559
on the floor, where's he coming?
395
00:21:58.920 --> 00:22:01.160
Uh, Lieutenant, there's not yet to arrive.
396
00:22:02.680 --> 00:22:03.720
What was the next step?
397
00:22:04.440 --> 00:22:07.079
I give the impression of the Keith P. Sde and
398
00:22:07.119 --> 00:22:11.880
she says, meet me the night nine o'clock the corner
399
00:22:11.960 --> 00:22:15.400
of depth and Roosevelt, which is where I did find myself.
400
00:22:22.119 --> 00:22:24.559
Sprinkles hot, Sadie.
401
00:22:24.720 --> 00:22:25.559
It's all yours.
402
00:22:26.039 --> 00:22:27.119
What is a.
403
00:22:27.279 --> 00:22:28.279
Carton in the trunk?
404
00:22:29.240 --> 00:22:30.119
And you take the car?
405
00:22:30.559 --> 00:22:31.599
You got a Mumbles place.
406
00:22:31.599 --> 00:22:34.759
He's expecting you to give him the guns. He gives
407
00:22:34.799 --> 00:22:37.720
you the money to come back to my house and
408
00:22:37.880 --> 00:22:38.359
we split.
409
00:22:38.559 --> 00:22:39.680
Hey you got the guns.
410
00:22:40.079 --> 00:22:42.480
Oh we're shooting fish in a barrel.
411
00:22:52.319 --> 00:22:56.759
Yeah yeah, who oh shoe sprinkers. Sure, I thought you
412
00:22:56.880 --> 00:23:00.240
was never going to kill you. Well, I command, leave
413
00:23:00.319 --> 00:23:06.440
me set this down. Mumbles, must wear it done. Yeah, fifty,
414
00:23:06.799 --> 00:23:07.680
that's what she said.
415
00:23:07.759 --> 00:23:08.200
Fifty.
416
00:23:08.920 --> 00:23:10.599
And you got fifty pieces of merchandise.
417
00:23:10.640 --> 00:23:14.519
And huh you bought and say they said fifty? Then five?
418
00:23:14.720 --> 00:23:20.119
Oh is the number? And now so Mumbles, Uh the cash?
419
00:23:20.440 --> 00:23:21.039
What the mother?
420
00:23:21.599 --> 00:23:21.759
Oh?
421
00:23:21.839 --> 00:23:25.759
The cash? Sure? Sure but yeah, yeah, first we count
422
00:23:25.799 --> 00:23:28.200
the merchandise. We open up the box.
423
00:23:28.720 --> 00:23:30.480
Hed, ain't I don't trust nobody.
424
00:23:31.119 --> 00:23:33.759
I mean, you get the idea. Oh, I understand your position.
425
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:39.039
One time in Chicago, we will Yeah, just take this here.
426
00:23:38.960 --> 00:23:40.000
Crow bar and we.
427
00:23:41.599 --> 00:23:42.559
Let me give me a hand.
428
00:23:42.640 --> 00:23:48.240
Mumbles, Yeah, I once done time and see, yeah we
429
00:23:48.279 --> 00:23:50.240
can get her off a little bit of faith is
430
00:23:50.240 --> 00:23:53.559
all you need, Mumbles, and now come on, we remove
431
00:23:53.640 --> 00:23:57.839
this pattern and here we should have fifty little beauty.
432
00:23:57.559 --> 00:23:59.160
So all lined up for a row?
433
00:23:59.319 --> 00:24:04.799
Yeah yeah they hey, hey what and now Mumbles if
434
00:24:04.799 --> 00:24:08.960
you wilt the cash? Mumbles, Mumbles, why do you point
435
00:24:09.000 --> 00:24:14.240
that that? Roscoe at me? Fifty little beauty? Sure you
436
00:24:14.319 --> 00:24:16.119
and city you.
437
00:24:16.079 --> 00:24:17.160
Think you can put a fast one?
438
00:24:17.200 --> 00:24:19.480
And old mumbles or what is it that you are
439
00:24:19.559 --> 00:24:20.680
exactly talking about?
440
00:24:20.759 --> 00:24:23.759
You drop the box, take the cash, and old mumbles
441
00:24:23.799 --> 00:24:24.759
here holds the bag?
442
00:24:25.240 --> 00:24:25.759
What bag?
443
00:24:25.839 --> 00:24:29.119
Where are the pistols? Pistols are in a box? Well,
444
00:24:29.680 --> 00:24:32.720
fifty pistols. They should they should be in a box,
445
00:24:32.960 --> 00:24:36.000
you know, Mumbles here is gonna bump you off? And
446
00:24:36.039 --> 00:24:38.839
then he who is he going to.
447
00:24:38.880 --> 00:24:39.559
Have a date with?
448
00:24:39.720 --> 00:24:40.279
Saidy?
449
00:24:40.359 --> 00:24:40.759
Mumbus.
450
00:24:40.759 --> 00:24:42.720
Listen, I did not mean any harm. I did not
451
00:24:42.880 --> 00:24:44.160
drop the box and run.
452
00:24:44.319 --> 00:24:47.319
Huh did I not stay and help? I am as
453
00:24:47.359 --> 00:24:51.039
surprised as you are. There was a mistake, an honest mistake.
454
00:24:52.039 --> 00:24:55.240
Let us see, shall we what is inside the box?
455
00:24:55.559 --> 00:25:00.599
There ain't no pistols will leave us sea. It's a
456
00:25:00.920 --> 00:25:04.039
it's a big tube. This thing at the end something
457
00:25:04.599 --> 00:25:06.960
something's written down on it. Let me read what it
458
00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:12.000
says uh. It says, come.
459
00:25:11.839 --> 00:25:13.400
On, come on, coime on, what are your mumbling now?
460
00:25:13.400 --> 00:25:14.440
But what does it say?
461
00:25:14.720 --> 00:25:25.599
It? It says warhead type Dionysius nuclear. You you what?
462
00:25:25.599 --> 00:25:29.799
What did you say? I guess it is a Dionysius missile.
463
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:35.319
War Sprinkles, Get that thing out of here, work it out, mumbles?
464
00:25:35.359 --> 00:25:39.359
Do you comprehend the possibility you're for your boys?
465
00:25:39.480 --> 00:25:39.839
Mumbles?
466
00:25:39.880 --> 00:25:42.279
You Now they can walk into a bank instead of
467
00:25:42.319 --> 00:25:46.400
a pistol, they will use this genuine us Dionysius nuclear
468
00:25:46.519 --> 00:25:47.279
wore her out.
469
00:25:47.559 --> 00:25:50.480
But you have your imagine the house.
470
00:25:54.680 --> 00:25:59.319
Way spring, because that is the missile that's been reported missing.
471
00:25:59.480 --> 00:26:03.559
The very lieutenant, how did you? It seems to say
472
00:26:03.599 --> 00:26:07.039
these husbands made them feel mistake? He pitched up the wrong.
473
00:26:06.920 --> 00:26:09.039
Cut and c fi to see.
474
00:26:09.079 --> 00:26:11.839
I hate a whole mul that's been hunting for these thing, sprinkles.
475
00:26:11.920 --> 00:26:15.119
So I returned to say the house, and when I
476
00:26:15.200 --> 00:26:19.359
informed Thorif of what he had accomplished, he fainted.
477
00:26:21.079 --> 00:26:23.680
So don't expect to me, how sprinkles.
478
00:26:23.759 --> 00:26:24.960
What are we gonna do about him?
479
00:26:25.079 --> 00:26:26.200
What are we gonna do about him?
480
00:26:26.680 --> 00:26:31.000
What are we gonna do about war had type dionysis nuclear?
481
00:26:31.319 --> 00:26:33.319
We will not lose our heads.
482
00:26:32.920 --> 00:26:35.079
A nuclear missile war.
483
00:26:35.759 --> 00:26:37.960
It's only a small one.
484
00:26:38.559 --> 00:26:40.720
You mean I was just laying around where anybody could
485
00:26:40.759 --> 00:26:41.240
get out of it.
486
00:26:41.279 --> 00:26:44.359
Oh no, no, you have no idea the security. There
487
00:26:44.359 --> 00:26:48.160
are gods and computer timelocks, and nobody could ever get
488
00:26:48.160 --> 00:26:49.240
this thing that that?
489
00:26:49.519 --> 00:26:50.640
Then how do we get it?
490
00:26:50.880 --> 00:26:54.440
All that security is up in the front. Around the back,
491
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:55.680
there's a small door.
492
00:26:55.920 --> 00:26:59.960
Lady, you have broken the unwritten rule. You have worked
493
00:27:00.119 --> 00:27:00.960
with an amateur.
494
00:27:01.960 --> 00:27:05.279
What could I do? I'm in love? It meant so
495
00:27:05.400 --> 00:27:09.160
much to him. But quite we could have an even
496
00:27:09.240 --> 00:27:12.319
bigger deal. Yeah yeah, it's a chance to make the
497
00:27:12.359 --> 00:27:13.680
biggest store of all time.
498
00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:16.200
To what kind of score are you referring?
499
00:27:16.599 --> 00:27:18.200
We'll sell the warhead.
500
00:27:18.400 --> 00:27:19.799
Oh yeah, yeah.
501
00:27:19.839 --> 00:27:21.960
You may be no offense who will purchase a.
502
00:27:21.960 --> 00:27:23.000
Nuclear war here?
503
00:27:23.039 --> 00:27:23.960
It be worth a million?
504
00:27:24.160 --> 00:27:27.839
No, no, city, leave me inform you as to our
505
00:27:27.880 --> 00:27:30.960
immediate course of a Wait, sprinkle we shall take the
506
00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:33.920
warhead back to the army base and leave her on
507
00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:37.079
the doorstep like there was a new born base.
508
00:27:37.359 --> 00:27:38.759
Sprinkles, you gotta listen to me.
509
00:27:38.920 --> 00:27:39.599
Did I not.
510
00:27:39.720 --> 00:27:41.240
Already listen to you?
511
00:27:41.279 --> 00:27:44.119
Were? You're not gonna steal fifty pistols?51200:27:44.160 --> 00:27:44.480
For us.51300:27:44.640 --> 00:27:46.359
This time, we're gonna make a fortune.51400:27:46.440 --> 00:27:47.599
I do not think so.51500:27:47.920 --> 00:27:51.160
We are gonna sell this warhead. And I know who51600:27:51.160 --> 00:27:53.400
would want to buy it? You do, I know just51700:27:53.480 --> 00:27:57.920
the customer. I know just the right customer.51800:28:02.319 --> 00:28:07.680
A customer for a fully armed nuclear warhead? Who would51900:28:07.680 --> 00:28:08.720
want to buy one?52000:28:09.599 --> 00:28:09.920
Now?52100:28:10.519 --> 00:28:14.279
There are all sorts of interesting possibilities, all kinds of52200:28:14.359 --> 00:28:18.400
potential situations. And when you consider our good friend Sprinkles52300:28:18.440 --> 00:28:23.440
and the company he keeps, their permutations and combinations, well52400:28:23.480 --> 00:28:26.000
they add up to infinity.52500:28:26.839 --> 00:28:29.720
But three is only a few minutes.52600:28:38.079 --> 00:28:43.160
There is no substitute for hard work, said mister Thomas Albaddison,52700:28:43.400 --> 00:28:46.119
And of course he was right. Those who choose to52800:28:46.240 --> 00:28:50.440
chase easy money soon find themselves working harder and harder52900:28:50.480 --> 00:28:53.880
to catch it. And somehow it just keeps eluding the grasp.53000:28:54.960 --> 00:28:58.880
As mister Sprinkle's magoon, our protagonist has discovered.53100:28:59.440 --> 00:29:01.240
I know who'll buy a missile?53200:29:01.519 --> 00:29:02.000
Who?53300:29:02.160 --> 00:29:04.400
Who do you think? An enemy agent?53400:29:05.359 --> 00:29:06.680
Oh? What you hurt me?53500:29:06.759 --> 00:29:07.680
An enemy agent?53600:29:07.759 --> 00:29:09.400
But but saity.53700:29:09.240 --> 00:29:12.240
Watch, I do not think it is right?53800:29:12.279 --> 00:29:12.720
Why not?53900:29:13.240 --> 00:29:15.559
Well, and they'll pay a big price.54000:29:16.079 --> 00:29:18.480
Say the money, it's not all there is the life?54100:29:18.599 --> 00:29:18.759
Oh?54200:29:18.880 --> 00:29:20.240
I agree with that one hundred percent.54300:29:20.400 --> 00:29:22.680
And this is a sacred thing, Sadie.54400:29:22.960 --> 00:29:26.319
How do you know? Well, I okay, I just figured54500:29:26.359 --> 00:29:29.759
it out. So either it's a secret thing or it ain't.54600:29:30.000 --> 00:29:33.319
Right, well, yes, right, Well, if it ain't a.54700:29:33.279 --> 00:29:35.799
Secret, then the enemy already knows about it and there's54800:29:35.799 --> 00:29:39.400
no harm done. Right, Well, and it's okay to sell it, right?54900:29:40.039 --> 00:29:41.000
Uh?55000:29:41.079 --> 00:29:41.640
Yeah, right?55100:29:42.160 --> 00:29:44.720
But what if it is a secret then we cannot55200:29:44.759 --> 00:29:46.920
sell it. Then we have to sell it?55300:29:47.599 --> 00:29:50.519
Oh sure, I'm afraid I do not see what so.55400:29:50.440 --> 00:29:52.880
We can make sure there will be peace in the world.55500:29:53.759 --> 00:29:54.599
How does that work?55600:29:54.720 --> 00:29:58.200
But you see, the enemy will now know what kind55700:29:58.240 --> 00:30:00.720
of secret weapon we got, what can do to him55800:30:00.759 --> 00:30:04.279
if he steps out of line? What's gonna happen if55900:30:04.279 --> 00:30:06.599
he tries to mes around with a good old United56000:30:06.640 --> 00:30:11.799
States of America? You see, oh, sprinkles, How else is56100:30:11.839 --> 00:30:13.680
he gonna know how important it is for him to56200:30:13.720 --> 00:30:17.559
behave himself. I've done any job in my life, but56300:30:17.640 --> 00:30:20.920
this is the first one I ever done that was56400:30:21.000 --> 00:30:22.720
gonna help my country too.56500:30:23.119 --> 00:30:26.640
And the city. Just where are you gonna discover an56600:30:26.799 --> 00:30:27.400
enemy agent?56700:30:27.480 --> 00:30:27.640
Oh?56800:30:27.680 --> 00:30:30.319
That shouldn't be a problem, don't you read the papers?56900:30:30.759 --> 00:30:34.920
The country's full of enemy agents. It's just a detail,57000:30:34.960 --> 00:30:39.359
you understand. Sooner or later we're bound to find one.57100:30:43.119 --> 00:30:47.000
And did you find one, Sprinkles, Yes, Lieutenant, we found57200:30:47.160 --> 00:30:51.599
mister cherry Berry, the dead guy on the floor, the57300:30:51.799 --> 00:30:57.160
exact self same poison. Lieutenant, he's an enemy agents. I57400:30:57.279 --> 00:31:02.480
fear you are correct. And as you get to them,57500:31:03.039 --> 00:31:05.680
they say the country is full of enemy agents. They57600:31:05.720 --> 00:31:09.920
could be right, but enemy agents are like taxi gaps.57700:31:09.920 --> 00:31:12.079
There's never any around when you need one.57800:31:12.839 --> 00:31:16.200
And where as you get this, mister civ.57900:31:16.079 --> 00:31:19.359
Bieby, well, you are no doubt aware of the French58000:31:19.519 --> 00:31:21.559
language expression church has left fun.58100:31:22.400 --> 00:31:23.279

It means you should always look for the name Sprinkles.58300:31:28.279 --> 00:31:33.680
I'm always amazed that you're It was the way erudition.58400:31:34.359 --> 00:31:37.519

libraries and museums where I read books and I admire58600:31:41.000 --> 00:31:46.880
pictures and also pick up games. There were good places,58700:31:47.319 --> 00:31:51.720
especially smart, skinny ones not my tipe. Well, as they58800:31:51.759 --> 00:31:55.920
say in the Latin language, they gusty bush known disputandem.58900:31:56.400 --> 00:31:57.079
What does that mean?59000:31:57.720 --> 00:31:59.519
Do not split into the wind?59100:32:00.359 --> 00:32:01.400
Uh?59200:32:01.559 --> 00:32:05.319

Yes, of course let me count it out for you.68900:37:18.079 --> 00:37:20.480
I'm sorry, I come and take a check. I understand69000:37:21.440 --> 00:37:27.920
one thousand, two thousand three d how convenient it would69100:37:27.960 --> 00:37:31.320

No, no, no, it's not that.69900:37:58.400 --> 00:37:59.760
It's just madness.70000:38:00.920 --> 00:38:02.679
Oh, I see.70100:38:03.119 --> 00:38:05.880

You do?71000:38:33.559 --> 00:38:38.000
Of course, the Dionysius missire. Then that's her, the ancient71100:38:38.119 --> 00:38:41.679
god of wine. It is fired into a concentration of71200:38:41.760 --> 00:38:46.519
advancing troops. It explodes and sends fumes a pure whiskey71300:38:47.000 --> 00:38:50.159
in such great strength that the soldiers fall to the71400:38:50.239 --> 00:38:52.039
ground in a drunken stupor.71500:38:53.280 --> 00:38:56.519
It's the workers. But of course, and you know all71600:38:56.559 --> 00:38:57.880

I can stay all.72200:39:18.159 --> 00:39:20.360
That is how the deal with all the enemies of72300:39:20.480 --> 00:39:20.920
the people.72400:39:21.239 --> 00:39:21.840
Do you agree?72500:39:21.960 --> 00:39:25.679
Hold on, mister, we shall tear down that flag. What72600:39:26.000 --> 00:39:27.480
a flag of oppression?72700:39:27.760 --> 00:39:28.880
The American flag?72800:39:29.039 --> 00:39:34.000
Oh no, you will me. I'll never again fly and pall.72900:39:33.960 --> 00:39:34.880
You the breed.73000:39:35.079 --> 00:39:37.199
You cannot talk the way Parl Glory.73100:39:37.360 --> 00:39:38.599
The deal is off.73200:39:39.039 --> 00:39:42.559
You are beginning to talk like an enemy of the people.73300:39:42.679 --> 00:39:47.039
Here's your money. Oh yes, and I am taking back73400:39:47.320 --> 00:39:50.639
that missile, you fool. Stand back that little here that73500:39:50.719 --> 00:39:51.480
does not scare me.73600:39:51.599 --> 00:39:53.719
Will not take one more stare, I said.73700:39:53.760 --> 00:39:54.440
The dealer is off.73800:39:54.559 --> 00:39:55.360
I have warned you.73900:40:01.119 --> 00:40:15.880
Week, mister cherry Berry. Uh, mister cherry Bery. Yeah, here's74000:40:15.920 --> 00:40:16.480
a slummer.74100:40:17.599 --> 00:40:21.800
I'm at ninety eight Saint Regis's apartment, tend I got74200:40:21.880 --> 00:40:27.159
one dead body, one Dynasius nuclear warhead. I got one74300:40:27.199 --> 00:40:31.719
prime suspect. You better call the FBI, the CIA, and74400:40:32.320 --> 00:40:33.440
anybody else who wants.74500:40:33.280 --> 00:40:33.760
A piece of it.74600:40:35.400 --> 00:40:38.239
And that is my story started Plumber.74700:40:39.119 --> 00:40:44.559
Yeah, Sprinkles, I have to arrest you for the murder74800:40:44.559 --> 00:40:48.039
of mister Jimmy Bery. I don't have to inform you74900:40:48.400 --> 00:40:51.280
that as if now anything you say could be used75000:40:51.320 --> 00:40:58.679
against you. Factum sorry, Uh, Sprinkles, I'll let poem go again.75100:41:00.000 --> 00:41:05.280
Sprinkled with white for a chorus, that is right, sprinkled75200:41:05.559 --> 00:41:09.280
with blue? Or hearts that are thus.75300:41:11.880 --> 00:41:11.960
Well?75400:41:12.039 --> 00:41:14.599
I says, you never read about them?75500:41:14.679 --> 00:41:14.960
Right there?75600:41:15.920 --> 00:41:20.239
You never read about Sprinkles and I'm missing a warhead. Yeah,75700:41:20.280 --> 00:41:23.840
I'll tell you what happened. The big wheel has decided75800:41:23.880 --> 00:41:28.000
to hush it up. And then somebody figures maybe Sprinkles75900:41:28.000 --> 00:41:30.440
isn't that dip but as a member of one of76000:41:30.480 --> 00:41:31.639
the security.76100:41:31.159 --> 00:41:32.920
Outfits and don't want to blow his cover.76200:41:34.440 --> 00:41:39.440
Anyhow, Sprinkles is are on the streets, alive and well76300:41:40.800 --> 00:41:45.519
and neither looking wallets uh trapping foreign agents.76400:41:47.559 --> 00:41:48.360
Take your pictures?76500:41:54.719 --> 00:41:56.760
And what do you think me?76600:41:57.679 --> 00:42:00.360
I don't know if it could be either of the76700:42:00.440 --> 00:42:04.559
alternatives that Lieutenant Flummer suggests, or it might be a76800:42:04.679 --> 00:42:09.679
third who knows one thing and one thing only is76900:42:09.760 --> 00:42:10.159
for sure.77000:42:11.039 --> 00:42:13.719
I shall be back in just a short while.77100:42:23.519 --> 00:42:27.280
I suppose it began way back in Exodus, where it77200:42:27.400 --> 00:42:31.599
is written spies were sent to spy out the land,77300:42:32.119 --> 00:42:35.199
and we've had spies ever since. Spying, as you know,77400:42:35.480 --> 00:42:38.880
is supposed to be a serious business, and therefore that77500:42:39.440 --> 00:42:44.119
is really what's funny about it. Our cast included Fred Gwynn,77600:42:44.280 --> 00:42:46.519
Robert Dryden, Bryana Rayburn and Ian Martin.77700:42:47.039 --> 00:42:50.079
The entire production was under the direction of Hyman Brown.77800:42:52.559 --> 00:42:55.800
Well, I feel like that was a good way to77900:42:56.239 --> 00:43:00.880
kick off the evening. What do you think, my dear, Oh,78000:43:02.599 --> 00:43:07.719
fair enough? Well, I do hope you're enjoying yourself. I78100:43:07.760 --> 00:43:11.840
hope you're comfortable. It's very chilly in here, but I'm78200:43:12.400 --> 00:43:18.039
starting to enjoy it quite a bit. Well, I suppose78300:43:18.199 --> 00:43:21.280
at the end of the night, it's all about how78400:43:21.360 --> 00:43:26.480
you feel about how you feel. And I know myself78500:43:26.599 --> 00:43:31.639
quite well and I know you a bit too. We're78600:43:31.679 --> 00:43:36.840
both simply happy as long as we're terror stricken.78700:43:38.519 --> 00:43:56.039
The Signal Oil Program the whistler. That whistle is your78800:43:56.199 --> 00:43:58.159
signal for the Signal Oil Program.78900:43:59.320 --> 00:43:59.920
The Whistler.79000:44:17.280 --> 00:44:20.960
I am the Whistler, and I know many things. For79100:44:21.119 --> 00:44:22.039
I walk by night.79200:44:22.679 --> 00:44:24.760
I know many strange tales.79300:44:24.679 --> 00:44:26.679
Hidden in the hearts of men and women who have79400:44:26.760 --> 00:44:31.880
stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors79500:44:31.960 --> 00:44:33.519
of which they dare not speak.79600:44:40.760 --> 00:44:44.880
Yes, friends, it's time for the Whistler, rated by independent research,79700:44:44.960 --> 00:44:49.039
the most popular West Coast program in radio history. And remember,79800:44:49.480 --> 00:44:53.360
let every traffic signal remind you with new signal gasoline79900:44:53.400 --> 00:44:56.320
you do go farther than ever. Look for the familiar80000:44:56.400 --> 00:45:00.360
big yellow and black circle side that identifies those popular80100:45:00.480 --> 00:45:04.599
signal service stations in seven western states from Canada to Mexico.80200:45:06.519 --> 00:45:11.239
And now the Whistler's strange story. Terror stricken.80300:45:19.800 --> 00:45:25.760
Fear can become a terrible thing, gangrenous, disintegrating, warping, twisting,80400:45:26.239 --> 00:45:28.719
gnawing at a man's mind until he is conscious of80500:45:28.800 --> 00:45:32.119
nothing else but its presence. That was the kind of80600:45:32.199 --> 00:45:35.639
fear that took hold of Benjamin Reynolds, and oddly enough,80700:45:36.000 --> 00:45:38.559
it was the natural outgrowth of the very thing that80800:45:38.719 --> 00:45:41.559
started him on the road to success. There was a trial,80900:45:42.079 --> 00:45:46.559
an important trial. There were big names involved, particularly the81000:45:46.679 --> 00:45:50.920
name of Andrew Miller, the accused and at that trial.81100:45:51.239 --> 00:45:55.400
Ten years ago, young Benny Reynolds, investment clerk just out81200:45:55.400 --> 00:45:59.840
of college, became Benjamin Reynolds star witness for the prosecution,81300:46:00.480 --> 00:46:04.079
and he was a good witness. Investment bankers in San81400:46:04.159 --> 00:46:07.280
Francisco and Wall Street in London glanced at the headlines81500:46:07.320 --> 00:46:11.840
and commented that this time, because of Benjamin Reynolds, Andrew81600:46:11.920 --> 00:46:14.079
Miller and his crowd were washed up for good.81700:46:14.800 --> 00:46:15.400
They were right.81800:46:18.599 --> 00:46:20.119
Order, please order in the court.81900:46:21.039 --> 00:46:24.760
Will the prisoner face the bench? Andrew Miller, you have82000:46:24.880 --> 00:46:27.639
been found guilty of the charge of grand lasnie. I82100:46:27.760 --> 00:46:30.440
therefore sent you to be confined within the state prison82200:46:30.559 --> 00:46:31.599
for a term of ten years.82300:46:32.239 --> 00:46:35.119
They lived. Remove the prisoner, you dirty, right, Renolds.82400:46:35.559 --> 00:46:49.079
I'll get you for this, Yes, Benjamin, that was the82500:46:49.159 --> 00:46:53.119
big break. Overnight you became the banker's champion, the man82600:46:53.159 --> 00:46:57.039
who almost single handedly broke up the Miller crowd. Today,82700:46:57.519 --> 00:47:01.239
just ten years later, you're head of the investment company,82800:47:01.559 --> 00:47:04.599
a pillar of the community. It's a nice morning as82900:47:04.639 --> 00:47:05.119
you sit.83000:47:05.000 --> 00:47:07.760
At the desk in your private office looking at reports.83100:47:09.840 --> 00:47:13.159
John, will you send mister Barton and please yes forty83200:47:13.280 --> 00:47:18.199
six thousand alum. I can that can't be right? Gross83300:47:18.199 --> 00:47:21.760
commissions chargeable. Wait a minute, now, I know that's wrong.83400:47:24.440 --> 00:47:27.320
You wanted to see me, Ben, Yes, Ralph, these figures.83500:47:27.400 --> 00:47:29.559
Are you sure they're correct? Of course I prepared the83600:47:29.559 --> 00:47:33.079
statement myself. Things like this don't do my heart any good, Ralph,83700:47:33.159 --> 00:47:35.519
I say, sit down, will you. I'm sure there must83800:47:35.559 --> 00:47:37.880
be a mistake somewhere. I don't think so, But of83900:47:37.960 --> 00:47:40.119
course it's possible. Well suppose you recheck the may just84000:47:40.159 --> 00:47:40.519
to be sure.84100:47:40.599 --> 00:47:42.320
Well, that's a big job. I had to have to84200:47:42.400 --> 00:47:44.000
go through all the records for the whole year. Again.84300:47:44.079 --> 00:47:47.480
I wouldn't ask you if I didn't think it was important. Well,84400:47:48.400 --> 00:47:50.800
perhaps I ought to call in the Monroe auditing company.84500:47:50.920 --> 00:47:53.800
No, I'll do it, Ben, No use taking on that expense.84600:47:53.920 --> 00:47:55.760
Well, all right, if you can have it by next Monday,84700:47:55.840 --> 00:47:57.239
otherwise I'll have to call Monroe.84800:47:57.679 --> 00:47:59.480
I've got to have those figures for the director's meeting.84900:47:59.599 --> 00:48:00.360
I'll have them for you.85000:48:02.199 --> 00:48:05.840
By the way, Ben, have you seen the papers? Yes?85100:48:05.960 --> 00:48:08.239
I glanced through them at breakfast. Did you buy any85200:48:08.360 --> 00:48:10.119
chance see this?85300:48:13.280 --> 00:48:13.440
Yes?85400:48:13.480 --> 00:48:13.920
I missed that.85500:48:15.079 --> 00:48:18.719
Among those released from state prison today is Andrew Miller,85600:48:19.639 --> 00:48:22.000
convicted ten years ago grand larceny in a trial that85700:48:22.119 --> 00:48:24.159
caused worldwide comment in financial circle.85800:48:25.519 --> 00:48:27.760
Remember him, what do you think?85900:48:28.599 --> 00:48:30.880
I remember what he said when the judge sentenced him. Yeah,86000:48:31.800 --> 00:48:34.480
does it make you a little nervous, ben I mean86100:48:34.760 --> 00:48:36.039
just knowing the man is on.86200:48:36.079 --> 00:48:36.639
The loose again.86300:48:37.719 --> 00:48:39.559
I doubt very much of Andy Miller will do anything86400:48:39.599 --> 00:48:44.239
that will send him up again. Still you never know,86500:48:44.440 --> 00:48:54.320
do you, No, Benjamin.86600:48:54.159 --> 00:48:54.719
You never know?86700:48:55.039 --> 00:48:55.440
Do Yet?86800:48:56.239 --> 00:48:58.679
Andy Miller wouldn't think of making good on his promise,86900:48:59.599 --> 00:49:04.880
or would somehow you can't concentrate, find yourself thinking about it,87000:49:05.039 --> 00:49:07.840
wondering walking to the water cooler in the corner of87100:49:07.920 --> 00:49:12.119
your office every five minutes, wiping perspiration from your forehead87200:49:12.159 --> 00:49:15.599
until your handkerchief is soggy, and the next morning it's87300:49:15.679 --> 00:49:18.360
worse as you answer your morning mail order for.87400:49:18.400 --> 00:49:21.239
One hundred chairs consolidated power and light at the market,87500:49:21.440 --> 00:49:26.039
thereby acknowledge it and say that was consolidated, wasn't it?87600:49:26.159 --> 00:49:27.960
I think it was Southern California?87700:49:28.079 --> 00:49:33.239
Edison, Oh, yes, make it Edison man, and uh, we'll87800:49:33.320 --> 00:49:39.239
be executed immediately, Vir truly yours received ker McDonald's and.87900:49:40.960 --> 00:49:41.760
What's sis.88000:49:43.639 --> 00:49:44.239
You rat?88100:49:45.519 --> 00:49:49.760
I'll get you and don't forget it. But she had88200:49:49.800 --> 00:49:52.119
the nerve to sign it. What's the matter, where's the88300:49:52.199 --> 00:49:52.960
envelope to this thing?88400:49:53.119 --> 00:49:54.400
Why Vera takes them off?88500:49:54.559 --> 00:49:58.679
Get very in here right away, right and get Boughton. Yes,88600:50:02.679 --> 00:50:06.159
and don't forget it, Andrew Miller.88700:50:07.559 --> 00:50:08.360
All the crust?88800:50:10.679 --> 00:50:11.079
Is that for me?88900:50:11.199 --> 00:50:11.320
Ben?89000:50:11.519 --> 00:50:16.519
Yes, take a look at this same word he used89100:50:16.519 --> 00:50:18.840
at the trial. That guy must be crazy.89200:50:18.960 --> 00:50:19.840
He signed it himself.89300:50:20.280 --> 00:50:21.719
What do you make of him? I don't know.89400:50:22.199 --> 00:50:24.280
Didn't lose any time, did he? I think he's trying89500:50:24.320 --> 00:50:27.119
to bluff you, or maybe he didn't write it.89600:50:27.199 --> 00:50:28.159
Oh he wrote it all right.89700:50:29.119 --> 00:50:29.599
I don't know.89800:50:30.119 --> 00:50:33.440
It's pretty fantastic after ten years, but in view of89900:50:33.480 --> 00:50:37.199
the threatening tone, i'd certainly checked to say it genuine. Yes,90000:50:38.679 --> 00:50:41.320
a center and please, well, don't see what she knows90100:50:41.320 --> 00:50:47.559
about it, Renald, Yes, Vera, did you notice this letter90200:50:47.599 --> 00:50:48.199
in the morning mail?90300:50:48.519 --> 00:50:48.639
Well?90400:50:48.639 --> 00:50:50.440
I don't read the mail, mister Renolds. I just opened90500:50:50.480 --> 00:50:51.360
it and put it on your desk.90600:50:51.400 --> 00:50:53.679
I've instructed them not to read company mail. Ben. Oh,90700:50:53.800 --> 00:50:54.920
of course I.90800:50:55.079 --> 00:50:56.719
Might remember if I saw the envelope.90900:50:58.199 --> 00:51:00.639
Have the waste basket containing the envelopes for today's mail91000:51:00.679 --> 00:51:01.559
brought into my office.91100:51:01.360 --> 00:51:01.599
Will you?91200:51:01.920 --> 00:51:03.079
I'm sorry, mister Reynolds.91300:51:03.119 --> 00:51:05.320
The janitor emptied all the waste baskets.91400:51:04.920 --> 00:51:05.400
An hour ago.91500:51:05.920 --> 00:51:09.159
HU, very well, what are you going to do now?91600:51:12.119 --> 00:51:15.880
I guess there's nothing I can do but call the police.91700:51:26.360 --> 00:51:29.679
With the prologue of terror stricken, the Signal Oil Company91800:51:29.719 --> 00:51:34.639
brings you another strange story by the whistler. If you've91900:51:34.679 --> 00:51:37.440
been reading the new car ads, and who hasn't, you've92000:51:37.519 --> 00:51:40.039
no doubt noticed the emphasis that's being put on increased92100:51:40.119 --> 00:51:43.239
mile age twenty five to thirty miles per gallon from92200:51:43.239 --> 00:51:44.119
some of the new models.92300:51:45.039 --> 00:51:47.280
Now, why do you suppose this is? Is it because92400:51:47.320 --> 00:51:48.079
folks today are.92500:51:48.039 --> 00:51:52.599
Interested in making dollars go farther well partly, but even92600:51:52.679 --> 00:51:56.039
more so they're interested in the increased engineering efficiency which92700:51:56.079 --> 00:51:59.760
makes that greater mile age possible. Yes, and right there92800:52:00.039 --> 00:52:02.199
you have the reason why Signal Oil Company is so92900:52:02.320 --> 00:52:04.639
proud of the fact that you now go farther than93000:52:04.679 --> 00:52:09.159
ever with new Signal gasoline. You see, Signals improved mileage93100:52:09.239 --> 00:52:12.599
is the result of increased power. Amazing new power, the93200:52:12.679 --> 00:52:16.320
same power that gives new Signal gasoline quicker starting, faster pickup,93300:52:16.760 --> 00:52:20.599
and quieter, higher anti knock. That's why we say look93400:52:20.679 --> 00:52:23.599
to your spidometer for the final measure of gasoline quality.93500:52:24.199 --> 00:52:26.920
You will find that the superpowered new gasoline that gives93600:52:26.960 --> 00:52:30.320
you peak performance is also the gasoline that now helps93700:52:30.360 --> 00:52:35.480
you go farther than ever new signal gasoline. And now93800:52:36.679 --> 00:52:37.559
back to the whistler.93900:52:58.360 --> 00:53:02.320
Well, Benjamin, the price tag on that testimony you delivered94000:53:02.400 --> 00:53:05.719
so efficiently at the trial of Andrew Miller ten years ago,94100:53:06.239 --> 00:53:09.239
and you're beginning to pay for it now. The police94200:53:09.320 --> 00:53:12.199
don't help much. All you can do is swear out94300:53:12.239 --> 00:53:15.039
a warrant for Miller's arrest and leave the rest up94400:53:15.119 --> 00:53:17.719
to them. They can't do a thing about that weak94500:53:17.760 --> 00:53:21.000
heart of yours, stop it from pounding every time someone94600:53:21.079 --> 00:53:24.360
comes to the door. And they can't bring your appetite94700:53:24.440 --> 00:53:28.320
back or help you still sleep at night. It's later94800:53:28.440 --> 00:53:30.480
than usual when you arrive at the office next day.94900:53:31.159 --> 00:53:33.280
Ralph Barton's busy on the books. As you go into95000:53:33.320 --> 00:53:35.760
your office, hang up your hat and go over to95100:53:35.840 --> 00:53:37.119
the water cooler for a drink.95200:53:44.400 --> 00:53:45.079
Hey guess.95300:53:51.039 --> 00:54:01.760
Yes, doctor cranees in the next office. Get him hurted.95400:54:01.880 --> 00:54:02.719
Yes, you're out of water.95500:54:02.760 --> 00:54:04.840
What's going on in the Toronto's what's happened?95600:54:04.920 --> 00:54:05.960
He call for help?95700:54:06.000 --> 00:54:06.519
Get a doctor.95800:54:06.679 --> 00:54:07.440
Here's a gun, for.95900:54:07.480 --> 00:54:09.320
One, what's keeping it as a doctor right down the hall.96000:54:11.079 --> 00:54:11.480
Time?96100:54:11.559 --> 00:54:12.639
Don't you realize every second?96200:54:12.679 --> 00:54:13.400
Talk here she comes?96300:54:13.440 --> 00:54:16.840
Now, stand back, stand back, Yes.96400:54:16.800 --> 00:54:18.079
Yes, he's a room doctor.96500:54:18.440 --> 00:54:18.960
Is it serious?96600:54:19.480 --> 00:54:19.719
Hmm?96700:54:20.760 --> 00:54:21.639
I can't tell yet.96800:54:22.880 --> 00:54:37.519
Looks very much like some form of poisoning. Well that96900:54:37.800 --> 00:54:41.039
was a close call, wasn't it, Benjamin. When you leave97000:54:41.119 --> 00:54:44.440
the hospital that night, you're still weak positive now that97100:54:44.599 --> 00:54:49.679
Miller means business. The police report that afternoon poison in97200:54:49.719 --> 00:54:52.360
the water cooler, just enough to knock a man out.97300:54:52.800 --> 00:54:55.880
No fingerprints, no way of knowing how Miller could have97400:54:56.039 --> 00:54:57.519
entered the office without being seen.97500:54:58.559 --> 00:55:01.679
Nothing they can tell you except to carry on as usual.97600:55:02.559 --> 00:55:06.639
For the next two days, you find yourself waiting for it, tense, expectant,97700:55:07.039 --> 00:55:10.280
but nothing happens, and you begin to relax a little97800:55:10.679 --> 00:55:13.199
to believe what the police lieutenant said about Miller being97900:55:13.960 --> 00:55:15.599
too smart to try it again.98000:55:16.320 --> 00:55:17.559
Perhaps they're right, Benjamin.98100:55:18.400 --> 00:55:20.880
Perhaps what you need is a change, a dinner out98200:55:20.920 --> 00:55:23.800
with your wife, Sally at a restaurant on sixth Streets.98300:55:26.119 --> 00:55:32.440
Then, dear then, or I'm sorry, Sally, I was thinking.98400:55:32.599 --> 00:55:36.000
Please try and forget a darling. How the whole thing's ridiculous.98500:55:36.599 --> 00:55:39.079
The man wouldn't have to take a chance like that. Oh,98600:55:39.159 --> 00:55:41.280
there must have been a mistake at the bottling. Come98700:55:41.360 --> 00:55:42.239
near some of.98800:55:42.360 --> 00:55:46.679
Course, Dear, No, let's forget it. No, I'm not, but98900:55:46.760 --> 00:55:47.440
I am hungry.99000:55:48.199 --> 00:55:49.000
Then do you mean it?99100:55:49.400 --> 00:55:50.280
Of course they don't.99200:55:50.360 --> 00:55:53.400
Why because you've hardly touched your meals last few days.99300:55:54.199 --> 00:55:57.840
Well that's order, I'm started. Well where do we start with?99400:55:58.480 --> 00:55:58.679
Well?99500:55:58.840 --> 00:55:59.960
What about a shrimp cocktail?99600:56:00.360 --> 00:56:02.679
Wonderful? Then the mixed green.99700:56:02.559 --> 00:56:04.119
Talent and their line for two?99800:56:08.320 --> 00:56:09.280
I'm the manager, you hurt?99900:56:09.760 --> 00:56:12.639
No, No, I'm all right. It missed me see there100000:56:12.639 --> 00:56:14.960
in the lord. Oh, I don't know how. Who did it?100100:56:15.039 --> 00:56:15.599
Oh I don't know, sir.100200:56:15.679 --> 00:56:17.239
I came from over there somewhere.100300:56:17.360 --> 00:56:19.519
Well, don't stand it with your mouth, hope and call100400:56:19.599 --> 00:56:20.760
the police of course.100500:56:20.599 --> 00:56:23.159
Right away, come on, come on, telling, let's get out.100600:56:23.159 --> 00:56:23.480
Of course.100700:56:31.440 --> 00:56:35.519
Well, whoever fired that shot meant business, didn't he? Benjamin?100800:56:36.119 --> 00:56:38.239
Your heart's pounding like a trip hammer again as you100900:56:38.280 --> 00:56:40.800
walk out of the nightclub. The hole in the wall101000:56:41.000 --> 00:56:43.880
was six inches from your head, and that's awfully close.101100:56:45.079 --> 00:56:47.000
Your heart almost stopped, didn't it?101200:56:47.880 --> 00:56:48.519
Your terrorist?101300:56:49.360 --> 00:56:52.679
You jumping every sound? And then you wonder why Miller101400:56:52.719 --> 00:56:55.400
doesn't come right out and kill you. But you remember,101500:56:55.519 --> 00:56:59.559
he's had ten long years to play his revenge. No101600:57:00.400 --> 00:57:02.719
sudden death would be too easy. He wants to make101700:57:02.800 --> 00:57:06.039
you suffer. Of course, sleep is out of the question.101800:57:06.880 --> 00:57:09.760
Even the powders the doctor gave you have little effect101900:57:09.840 --> 00:57:13.880
on your frenzied nerves. You imagine all kinds of things102000:57:13.920 --> 00:57:15.079
as you lie there in bed.102100:57:17.559 --> 00:57:23.079
Then yes, then why is he trying to kill you?102200:57:24.360 --> 00:57:26.360
There's the poison water in the trip to the hospital,102300:57:26.840 --> 00:57:30.719
then that shot tonight. Yeah, but the police will catch102400:57:30.800 --> 00:57:31.440
him soon, he can.102500:57:32.639 --> 00:57:34.239
I just hope it's soon enough.102600:57:35.199 --> 00:57:39.800
Oh, that's the door in the world, no doubt it.102700:57:44.159 --> 00:57:45.679
Hold your horses, I'm coming.102800:57:49.760 --> 00:57:51.360
Oh what do you want?102900:57:52.079 --> 00:57:52.719
What do I want?103000:57:53.079 --> 00:57:54.280
Yes, that's what I said. What do you want?103100:57:54.880 --> 00:57:57.119
I'm calling for the remains of the deer departed?103200:57:58.199 --> 00:57:58.880
Are you drunk?103300:57:59.480 --> 00:57:59.519
No?103400:57:59.880 --> 00:58:01.239
I don't think so.103500:58:01.599 --> 00:58:03.400
Now Look it's cold here at the door. Hurry and103600:58:03.440 --> 00:58:04.800
state your business, please, I did.103700:58:05.599 --> 00:58:07.800
I was sent to coal for the mortal remains.103800:58:07.920 --> 00:58:09.679
Man a lie, will you talk? Since I haven't time103900:58:09.719 --> 00:58:10.360
for foolishness.104000:58:10.440 --> 00:58:13.000
This is sixteen twenty Runyon Avenue, isn't.104100:58:13.079 --> 00:58:13.559
Yes it is?104200:58:14.239 --> 00:58:15.280
Then it's the right place.104300:58:16.440 --> 00:58:17.440
Who sent you anyway?104400:58:17.920 --> 00:58:21.280
The gold Hills Mortuary. Now do you understand?104500:58:21.440 --> 00:58:23.079
No, I don't. That must be some mistake.104600:58:23.360 --> 00:58:26.440
The party on the phone was very explicit. He said,104700:58:26.519 --> 00:58:30.800
sixteen twenty, Runyon avenue the remains of the late Benjamin Reynolds.104800:58:30.960 --> 00:58:34.039
That's not funny, mister, I'm Benjamin Reynolds.104900:58:34.400 --> 00:58:36.960
Oh now get out, Get out of the body of105000:58:37.000 --> 00:58:37.679
Benjamin Reynolds.105100:58:37.679 --> 00:58:42.920
Will give you a very black eye. Oh what's gonna105200:58:43.000 --> 00:58:43.760
happen next?105300:58:55.400 --> 00:58:59.000
How much more can you stand, Benjamin before your heart105400:58:59.119 --> 00:59:03.320
gives out completely. You can't eat, you can't sleep. You105500:59:03.480 --> 00:59:05.880
almost jump out of your skin at the slightest sound.105600:59:06.760 --> 00:59:10.760
Miller is getting his revenge. He must be enjoying it immensely.105700:59:11.880 --> 00:59:15.519
Sally makes you rest all day Sunday, but you're still befuddled.105800:59:15.800 --> 00:59:19.519
You can't even talk straight anymore. You stutter. Monday morning,105900:59:19.599 --> 00:59:22.360
you decide to walk to the office. You want to106000:59:22.400 --> 00:59:32.719
try to think, Yes, that's it, walk and try to think, monitor,106100:59:33.039 --> 00:59:34.440
monitor that booster, Dad.106200:59:34.519 --> 00:59:35.599
Try to run this man down.106300:59:35.719 --> 00:59:37.360
Hey, Hey, what's going on?106400:59:38.559 --> 00:59:39.559
Try to run over this van?106500:59:39.880 --> 00:59:40.559
You hurt me soon?106600:59:41.239 --> 00:59:44.559
No, no, no, all right?106700:59:44.960 --> 00:59:45.599
The devil you say.106800:59:45.639 --> 00:59:46.519
You're shaking like a leaf.106900:59:47.480 --> 00:59:50.280
Should should's my nurse? Quiet?107000:59:50.719 --> 00:59:50.960
John?107100:59:51.440 --> 00:59:52.119
Them? That's short?107200:59:52.159 --> 00:59:54.199
Shamed to think it was a delivered attempt to kid you?107300:59:54.760 --> 00:59:57.159
Yes, I think so too.107400:59:57.639 --> 00:59:59.719
Any idea who might be trying to kill it?107501:00:00.360 --> 01:00:00.599
Sure?107601:00:01.800 --> 01:00:02.519
And deep Miller?107701:00:02.880 --> 01:00:05.280
Okay, oh, I got to make a reporter of this ship.107801:00:05.519 --> 01:00:08.280
What's your name? Ben? Benjamin?107901:00:09.639 --> 01:00:10.079
Benjamin?108001:00:10.599 --> 01:00:12.440
You better see your doctor, mister Reynold. Joe, you're in108101:00:12.559 --> 01:00:13.000
bad shape.108201:00:14.039 --> 01:00:15.000
I'll be all right.108301:00:15.239 --> 01:00:16.760
I better send you home in a cap and no108401:00:16.880 --> 01:00:17.639
condition to walk.108501:00:24.519 --> 01:00:27.800
Another close call and you're scared almost to death, aren't you.108601:00:28.760 --> 01:00:30.760
You wonder how much longer your heart will be able108701:00:30.800 --> 01:00:33.159
to stand it? Not much longer.108801:00:33.280 --> 01:00:33.440
Now.108901:00:34.159 --> 01:00:36.679
You tremble so violently you can't even light a cigarette.109001:00:37.400 --> 01:00:40.320
Even at home. You can't sit still. You pace the109101:00:40.440 --> 01:00:45.159
floor back and forth all day long, until finally night comes.109201:00:46.000 --> 01:00:46.880
You can't sleep.109301:00:47.199 --> 01:00:51.079
You toss and turn. Yes, the days are bad, but109401:00:51.239 --> 01:00:53.159
the nights are filled with terror.109501:00:55.840 --> 01:00:57.039
Who's there?109601:01:02.159 --> 01:01:02.440
What's that?109701:01:02.679 --> 01:01:03.239
What's the house?109801:01:05.960 --> 01:01:06.440
The shutter?109901:01:09.039 --> 01:01:09.239
Huh?110001:01:11.360 --> 01:01:21.199
Yes, yes, of course, only the shutter. It was only110101:01:21.280 --> 01:01:24.440
the shutter, wasn't it then? But all the noises in110201:01:24.519 --> 01:01:27.920
the night have a sinister meaning, haven't they? After what110301:01:28.119 --> 01:01:32.440
seems like ours. Exhaustion finally takes over and you've just110401:01:32.599 --> 01:01:33.360
fallen asleep.110501:01:33.480 --> 01:01:42.480
When who's who's the door of this hard He's not110601:01:42.639 --> 01:01:43.159
the door.110701:01:46.039 --> 01:01:46.400
The phone?110801:01:47.880 --> 01:01:48.400
Who the devil?110901:01:48.440 --> 01:01:48.840
Can that be?111001:01:49.800 --> 01:01:51.840
I've give them a piece of my Hello.111101:01:53.199 --> 01:01:54.840
Is this Benjamin Reynolds?111201:01:55.159 --> 01:01:55.559
Yes it is.111301:01:55.960 --> 01:01:57.880
What's the big idea of calling me this house the night?111401:01:58.159 --> 01:01:59.000
Don't you know?111501:01:59.599 --> 01:01:59.880
No one?111601:02:00.039 --> 01:02:00.599
I don't care?111701:02:00.760 --> 01:02:04.320
Oh, yes you do. You got a letter the other day?111801:02:04.960 --> 01:02:07.960
Remember Andrew Miller?111901:02:08.400 --> 01:02:10.760
Why how do you guess.112001:02:12.320 --> 01:02:17.039
I'm going to get you? Remember say say say wait112101:02:17.039 --> 01:02:17.440
a minute.112201:02:17.559 --> 01:02:22.119
You haven't much time left to live, Reynolds. It's coming tomorrow.112301:02:22.360 --> 01:02:26.920
But hello, Hello, Hello?112401:02:29.599 --> 01:02:29.960
Hung up?112501:02:33.519 --> 01:02:40.400
Whoa but trace? I called? Quick? Please? What is your112601:02:40.480 --> 01:02:41.159
number the morning?112701:02:41.199 --> 01:02:41.239
Is?112801:02:41.280 --> 01:02:41.800
I'd one or two?112901:02:41.840 --> 01:02:42.559
Four on? Hurry?113001:02:42.639 --> 01:02:43.719
Please one moment?113101:02:43.800 --> 01:02:44.079
Please?113201:02:46.239 --> 01:02:47.079
Number did you call?113301:02:47.559 --> 01:02:49.280
I didn't call any number they called me.113401:02:49.719 --> 01:02:51.199
Do you know the other body's number?113501:02:51.360 --> 01:02:51.400
No?113601:02:51.519 --> 01:02:51.840
I don't.113701:02:51.880 --> 01:02:53.480
That's why I asked you to trace the call.113801:02:53.599 --> 01:02:54.199
Please hurry.113901:02:54.280 --> 01:02:57.000
There is no one connected with your number now I know.114001:02:57.280 --> 01:02:59.039
I know they hung up. Can't you hurry?114101:02:59.039 --> 01:03:01.159
I want to trace the call was connected with his phone?114201:03:01.239 --> 01:03:04.079
Please, I'm sorry, But after the other party has hung up,114301:03:04.119 --> 01:03:05.559
it's impossible to trace.114401:03:05.400 --> 01:03:15.559
The call, so sure, I wonder, I wonder if my114501:03:15.760 --> 01:03:16.440
hunch yet.114601:03:20.559 --> 01:03:27.159
See mm.114701:03:29.039 --> 01:03:32.840
Hello, hello, Barton, this is Reynolds.114801:03:32.960 --> 01:03:34.599
What the deuce makes you call me at this time114901:03:34.639 --> 01:03:38.159
of the night, Barton, Andrew Miller called.115001:03:38.559 --> 01:03:42.280
He said, I haven't much time to live, Yes, and115101:03:42.480 --> 01:03:44.960
I'm at my wits end. What can I do? He's115201:03:45.039 --> 01:03:46.920
coming here, Ralph Blood knows what you do to me?115301:03:47.440 --> 01:03:48.159
He's coming there.115401:03:48.239 --> 01:03:49.119
Well, he just told me.115501:03:51.079 --> 01:03:53.599
You can't take as much longer. Man, Why don't you115601:03:53.719 --> 01:03:54.280
call the police?115701:03:54.320 --> 01:03:56.039
So I've called the police a dozen times. I tell115801:03:56.079 --> 01:03:57.280
you Miller's too private for them.115901:03:57.519 --> 01:03:59.559
And there's only one thing to do. Get out.116001:04:00.199 --> 01:04:01.159
Yes, but he followed me.116101:04:01.360 --> 01:04:02.639
If he knows where, doesn't check me.116201:04:03.159 --> 01:04:04.960
Look, it's out of the question for you to stay116301:04:05.000 --> 01:04:07.239
there under the circumstances. I'll be over in the morning116401:04:07.239 --> 01:04:08.800
and we'll go up to my cabin for a few days.116501:04:09.079 --> 01:04:10.440
You've got to get a complete rest.116601:04:10.800 --> 01:04:14.559
Yes, you're absolutely right, Ralpha, I've simply got ten.116701:04:14.719 --> 01:04:17.960
Listen, there's someone tipping that guy off on your movements116801:04:18.559 --> 01:04:21.519
this time. Make sure don't tell anyone where you're going.116901:04:22.199 --> 01:04:24.800
Yes, yes, but what about Sally telling you're off on a.117001:04:24.800 --> 01:04:25.760
Business trip or something.117101:04:26.039 --> 01:04:26.519
Yeah, that's it.117201:04:26.800 --> 01:04:29.760
The convention start tomorrow and see the city. If necessary.117301:04:29.800 --> 01:04:31.000
You can call a later from the cabin.117401:04:31.480 --> 01:04:33.079
Yeah yeah, all right, Ralph.117501:04:33.199 --> 01:04:34.679
I'll pick you out in front of the signal station117601:04:34.719 --> 01:04:36.599
at running in broad More tomorrow morning at eight right,117701:04:37.280 --> 01:04:37.719
right right?117801:04:47.599 --> 01:04:49.719
How much farther around? How about fourteen miles?117901:04:50.280 --> 01:04:50.400
Hey?118001:04:50.480 --> 01:04:54.199
They are hearts banging away again? Doctor said six thousand118101:04:54.280 --> 01:04:55.079
feet was my limit.118201:04:55.159 --> 01:04:57.280
You know, well, we'll stay pretty well under that point.118301:04:57.360 --> 01:05:00.480
Oh goodness, by look at that view. You can see118401:05:00.480 --> 01:05:01.119
you all the way back to.118501:05:02.800 --> 01:05:03.519
What's the matter?118601:05:03.960 --> 01:05:08.119
So that's strange. There's that car again. You don't suppose118701:05:08.159 --> 01:05:08.880
he's following.118801:05:08.679 --> 01:05:08.960
Us to you?118901:05:09.960 --> 01:05:12.159
Probably one of the natives. I don't know.119001:05:13.199 --> 01:05:16.039
Wait a minute, you don't think no.119101:05:16.119 --> 01:05:18.039
You're sure you didn't tell anyone where you were going.119201:05:18.159 --> 01:05:20.920
But positive, I will have to call salilater though.119301:05:21.039 --> 01:05:21.440
Yeah sure.119401:05:23.320 --> 01:05:25.280
Hey, here's the spot where I always stop. You can119501:05:25.360 --> 01:05:27.760
get a good view clear back to the valley. How119601:05:27.760 --> 01:05:29.079
about it drain.119701:05:33.920 --> 01:05:41.320
This way? Yes, kind steeper? Better take it easy. There's119801:05:41.360 --> 01:05:42.599
a level spot up here at the top.119901:05:42.760 --> 01:05:45.960
Well, you go ahead, Ralph, I gotta watch myself in120001:05:46.039 --> 01:05:51.880
this solitude. Get that hair you know there's what I needed.120101:05:52.239 --> 01:05:55.000
Mountain air, sunshine, quiet.120201:05:56.159 --> 01:05:57.760
Hey, where are you up here?120301:05:58.280 --> 01:05:58.519
Come on?120401:05:58.800 --> 01:06:02.719
Huh is a real inspiration, Ralph? How'd you think of it?120501:06:02.920 --> 01:06:06.320
You means's who I mean?120601:06:06.400 --> 01:06:09.360
Getting away from everything like this when sniff of that120701:06:09.400 --> 01:06:12.880
air and forgets you ever had any words? Look over here, hey,120801:06:13.239 --> 01:06:15.880
not take it easy, kind of close to that edge,120901:06:15.920 --> 01:06:19.519
you know, Look, Ben, fifteen hundred feet straight down.121001:06:20.039 --> 01:06:22.280
Yeah, I'd just as soon stay back here.121101:06:22.159 --> 01:06:22.800
If you don't mind.121201:06:23.159 --> 01:06:24.880
So it might have been afraid, No.121301:06:25.360 --> 01:06:28.119
Just sensible, I sow. You know, funny thing about me121401:06:28.199 --> 01:06:30.719
in high places. It seems to ought to be afraid. Ben,121501:06:31.760 --> 01:06:36.000
that's where you're going. Fifteen hundred feet straight down.121601:06:37.320 --> 01:06:39.119
But that's good.121701:06:39.239 --> 01:06:46.079
Fifty You're you're serious, aren't you. I'd hate to have121801:06:46.239 --> 01:06:50.239
you call in the auditors. Ben, I was afraid that121901:06:50.440 --> 01:06:54.440
was it. There was something wrong with those figures, Yes122001:06:54.599 --> 01:06:55.000
there was.122101:06:56.039 --> 01:06:59.679
But I learned something from Andy Miller. You're not going122201:06:59.760 --> 01:07:03.119
to be around to testify. You're going to have a122301:07:03.239 --> 01:07:08.639
dizzy spell, and they're going to find you fifteen hundred122401:07:08.800 --> 01:07:12.599
feet down there on those rocks. Smooth.122501:07:20.480 --> 01:07:22.480
The whistler will return in just a moment with a122601:07:22.559 --> 01:07:27.679
strange ending to tonight's story. Meantime, here's news about one122701:07:27.719 --> 01:07:29.719
of the first of the new post war developments to122801:07:29.800 --> 01:07:33.519
make driving safer and more RESTful. You know how our122901:07:33.599 --> 01:07:37.280
bright western sunshine glares off pavements and off the windshields123001:07:37.280 --> 01:07:40.719
and polysh chromium of other cars, causing eyestrain. It makes123101:07:40.760 --> 01:07:44.320
you squint and get headaches. Well, during the war, the123201:07:44.519 --> 01:07:47.199
Army and Navy used a new principle of glare control.123301:07:47.719 --> 01:07:51.800
It's called polaroid, and unlike old fashioned colored filters that123401:07:51.920 --> 01:07:54.599
dockned everything and changed the colors of flowers and scenery,123501:07:55.039 --> 01:07:58.000
polaroid is as clear and colorless as your own windshield.123601:07:58.559 --> 01:08:01.920
But look through the polaroid and presto, all glare is gone.123701:08:03.000 --> 01:08:06.480
Now here's the good news. This same polaroid principle has123801:08:06.519 --> 01:08:09.440
been made into a visor for your car and therefore123901:08:09.480 --> 01:08:12.079
sale for the first time on the Pacific Coast at124001:08:12.119 --> 01:08:15.960
your signal dealers. The polaroid visor snaps onto your present124101:08:16.079 --> 01:08:18.760
visor in a jiffy. It's smart looking, and it flips124201:08:18.800 --> 01:08:21.079
out of the way when you're not using it. If124301:08:21.119 --> 01:08:24.399
it's sunny tomorrow, drive into your signal dealers for a demonstration.124401:08:24.840 --> 01:08:26.760
When you see the wear and tear it saves on124501:08:26.840 --> 01:08:27.359
your eyes.124601:08:27.840 --> 01:08:29.560
My bed is you want to buy one of these124701:08:29.640 --> 01:08:33.760
polaroid visors now to make your summer driving more pleasant.124801:08:35.079 --> 01:08:37.279
And now back to the whistler.124901:08:49.640 --> 01:08:53.079
Well, Benjamin, you seem to be in a tight spot,125001:08:54.279 --> 01:08:56.319
just the two of you there alone at the top125101:08:56.359 --> 01:09:00.399
of the cliff button staring at your white face tense,125201:09:00.720 --> 01:09:04.600
his fists clenched at his sides, and oddly you find125301:09:04.680 --> 01:09:08.239
yourself struggling to keep the smile inside you from showing125401:09:08.279 --> 01:09:12.279
on your face. It's probably only a few seconds, but125501:09:12.439 --> 01:09:14.000
it seems like an hour that the two of you125601:09:14.119 --> 01:09:15.119
stand there silent.125701:09:15.880 --> 01:09:23.359
Then listen, Ralph, hear that the car. Yes, they won't stop,125801:09:23.680 --> 01:09:25.720
Sure he will. That's what they came for.125901:09:26.000 --> 01:09:28.239
What do you mean there's a detective and two patrolmen126001:09:28.279 --> 01:09:30.159
in the car, Ralph, They followed us all the way126101:09:30.199 --> 01:09:30.560
from town.126201:09:30.640 --> 01:09:31.199
You're lying.126301:09:31.359 --> 01:09:34.920
You'd better restrain yourself for a minute and see. Of course,126401:09:35.000 --> 01:09:37.720
you could put it off now if you wanted to, Ralph.126501:09:38.479 --> 01:09:41.760
But it be kind of foolish, wouldn't it. The embezzlement charge.126601:09:41.600 --> 01:09:44.079
Will put you away for only four or five years,126701:09:44.359 --> 01:09:46.159
with perhaps a few more for attempted murder.126801:09:46.279 --> 01:09:48.439
But if you go ahead, and how did you know?126901:09:50.000 --> 01:09:50.680
You did it again?127001:09:52.680 --> 01:09:54.920
That it's a habit of yours, Ralph.127101:09:55.399 --> 01:09:57.800
Every time you're about to say something important, you clear127201:09:57.840 --> 01:10:01.960
your throat like that. That's why it hit me between127301:10:01.960 --> 01:10:04.039
the eyes last night when you called me and said,127401:10:06.000 --> 01:10:06.920
I'm gonna get you.127501:10:07.520 --> 01:10:07.960
Remember.127601:10:09.680 --> 01:10:13.079
Come on, Ralph, let's walk down to the road. We'll127701:10:13.119 --> 01:10:15.079
save the policeman a few steps.127801:10:45.359 --> 01:10:47.520
Next Monday, at nine o'clock, the Whistler will bring you127901:10:47.600 --> 01:10:51.840
another strange tale. The Whistler is broadcast for your entertainment128001:10:51.920 --> 01:10:54.960
by the marketers of signal gasoline and motor oil and128101:10:55.159 --> 01:10:59.479
fine quality automotive accessories, and by your neighborhood signal dealer.128201:11:00.640 --> 01:11:03.920
This program, produced by George w Allen, with tonight's story128301:11:04.000 --> 01:11:07.880
by Walter Jensen, music by Wilbur Hatch, is transmitted to128401:11:07.960 --> 01:11:10.680
our troops overseas by the Armed Forces Radio Service.128501:11:28.359 --> 01:11:29.960
That whistle is.128601:11:30.039 --> 01:11:34.439
Your signal for the Signal Oil program the Whistlers. This128701:11:34.600 --> 01:11:37.000
is Marvin Miller speaking, reminding you to look for those128801:11:37.079 --> 01:11:41.319
familiar yellow and black circle signs that identify those popular128901:11:41.439 --> 01:11:45.960
signal oil stations in seven western states from Canada to Mexico.129001:11:49.239 --> 01:11:52.439
This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.129101:12:06.199 --> 01:12:11.199
Now that you're feeling a bit more keyed up, which129201:12:11.279 --> 01:12:14.960
is a strange thing to imagine. I mean, you're here129301:12:15.079 --> 01:12:21.560
to relax lean into the night, yet our favorite ways129401:12:22.800 --> 01:12:29.920
are through fear. Well, I suppose humans are very complicated creatures,129501:12:30.079 --> 01:12:36.039
but still it does seem a bit odd. What's that?129601:12:36.920 --> 01:12:37.079
Oh?129701:12:37.960 --> 01:12:41.520
Heavens know, I don't know that there's much more healthy129801:12:41.720 --> 01:12:48.159
than enjoying affright in a safe place, at least a129901:12:48.319 --> 01:12:54.640
place you believe is safe. I say we kick back,130001:12:54.800 --> 01:12:58.920
relax and voyage through the Darkness.130101:13:00.920 --> 01:13:03.880

bring you suspense. This is the man in Black here131001:14:00.239 --> 01:14:04.279
for the Roma Wine Company of Presno, California. The Night131101:14:04.319 --> 01:14:07.399
from Hollywood will bring you the distinguished American leading lady131201:14:07.479 --> 01:14:11.760
of the screen, Miss Olivia de Havelen. Mister Haveland appears131301:14:11.800 --> 01:14:15.800
as a girl named Judith Webster who found herself embarked131401:14:15.840 --> 01:14:19.640
upon a journey into darkness. Traveling with her on this131501:14:19.800 --> 01:14:23.279
perilous voyage is that suave and debonair actor.131601:14:23.159 --> 01:14:24.359
Mister Reginald Gardner.131701:14:25.520 --> 01:14:28.520
So with the performances of mister Haveland and mister Gardner131801:14:28.880 --> 01:14:32.000
in the Sea Going Adventure play, we again hope to131901:14:32.119 --> 01:14:34.039
keep you in suspense.132001:14:45.159 --> 01:14:49.319
It happened in nineteen thirty nine, shortly before England and132101:14:49.479 --> 01:14:53.640
Germany were at war. I was in London serving as132201:14:53.720 --> 01:14:58.680
traveling companion missus Edna Prescott, a wealthy, quite elderly American woman,132301:15:00.039 --> 01:15:04.039
isn't a pleasant person, and the city's practiced blackouts were a.132401:15:04.039 --> 01:15:06.000
Particular source of annoyance to her.132501:15:06.039 --> 01:15:09.239
I remember thinking how ironic it was that she should132601:15:09.319 --> 01:15:13.399
die during one of them. I even thought it because132701:15:14.359 --> 01:15:16.880
until the doctors assured me her death was due to132801:15:16.960 --> 01:15:18.119
a common heart ailment.132901:15:18.560 --> 01:15:19.760
I was very busy for the.133001:15:19.840 --> 01:15:23.199
Next few days, arranging passage to America, getting my train133101:15:23.319 --> 01:15:27.920
ticket down to Southampton, and and carrying out the promise133201:15:27.960 --> 01:15:29.840
I had made so many times.133301:15:29.600 --> 01:15:30.560
To missus Prescott.133401:15:30.880 --> 01:15:33.239
I didn't relish any part of that.133501:15:34.199 --> 01:15:35.640
This webster and this webster.133601:15:35.680 --> 01:15:38.439
Oh, yes, yes, yes, the young woman who's escorting the casket.133701:15:38.800 --> 01:15:42.439
Oh here's your ticket a gate fire please, we'll praise.133801:15:42.640 --> 01:15:44.279
But this.133901:15:46.840 --> 01:15:50.239
The young woman who's escorting the casket. He said it134001:15:50.359 --> 01:15:54.000
so so matter of factly, as if such things occurred134101:15:54.039 --> 01:15:54.479
every day.134201:15:55.560 --> 01:15:56.359
I suppose they do.134301:15:57.680 --> 01:16:03.439
Yet minute on that train I felt uncomfortable on edge.134401:16:03.840 --> 01:16:06.800
It seemed as if the trip to Southampton and the134501:16:06.840 --> 01:16:07.800
steamer docks.134601:16:07.600 --> 01:16:08.479
Would never end.134701:16:10.680 --> 01:16:13.680
I remember how glad I was when it did, and134801:16:13.800 --> 01:16:16.079
how cheerful Stewart's.134901:16:15.600 --> 01:16:17.880
Voice sounded as he greeted me at the head of135001:16:17.920 --> 01:16:18.520
the gang way.135101:16:18.640 --> 01:16:22.600
Good evening, miss, welcome aboard. May I show you here, Kevin?135201:16:23.479 --> 01:16:25.640
Please do, Stewart, I'm very tired.135301:16:26.199 --> 01:16:35.239
Twelve are b dick this way? Miss? I hope they135401:16:35.359 --> 01:16:36.079
get him all right?135501:16:36.199 --> 01:16:38.239
Miss h get who.135601:16:41.319 --> 01:16:41.560
Boy?135701:16:41.640 --> 01:16:44.720
That black eyed killer? Please have a new claw on him,135801:16:44.720 --> 01:16:45.399
he says.135901:16:45.600 --> 01:16:48.720
Oh, oh, yes, an awesome thing.136001:16:49.880 --> 01:16:52.880
Ah, here we are, Miss twelve. Ay you have it136101:16:53.039 --> 01:16:53.960
all yourself.136201:16:54.119 --> 01:16:57.600
Thank you, Stewart. Oh I'm sorry here you are.136301:16:57.840 --> 01:17:00.720
Oh it's quite all right, miss faint, and good night,136401:17:01.000 --> 01:17:03.279
and told me if you need me, good.136501:17:03.239 --> 01:17:09.479
Night in my state room, perfectly safe. I realized how136601:17:09.600 --> 01:17:15.159
gitry I've been, how upset, and now how relieved. Suddenly136701:17:15.239 --> 01:17:18.119
I began to laugh right out loud. My fears had136801:17:18.159 --> 01:17:38.199
been so foolish, so very foolish. An hour later, I136901:17:38.279 --> 01:17:41.960
went out on deck. I no longer felt tired, and137001:17:42.079 --> 01:17:45.199
I wanted to watch the lights of the coastline fading137101:17:45.279 --> 01:17:48.720
away from us. I was standing near the art rail,137201:17:48.880 --> 01:17:51.479
quietly looking out across the water when.137301:17:52.640 --> 01:17:57.880
He first spoke, beautiful, isn't it. Oh, I'm sorry. Did137401:17:57.880 --> 01:17:58.479
I frighten you?137501:17:59.399 --> 01:18:02.399
Yes, yes you did. I didn't realize there was anyone137601:18:02.479 --> 01:18:03.239
near that life boat.137701:18:03.560 --> 01:18:06.199
Hell, I'm sorry. I was sure you saw me. I137801:18:06.279 --> 01:18:06.720
never would have.137901:18:06.760 --> 01:18:10.039
Well, it's all right, really, i've been nervous tonight anyway,138001:18:10.119 --> 01:18:10.800
I am.138101:18:10.760 --> 01:18:11.720
Not always he jumpy.138201:18:13.039 --> 01:18:14.880
What you need is an ocean voyd.138301:18:16.520 --> 01:18:17.119
Maybe that's it.138401:18:17.720 --> 01:18:19.479
Were you watching the shore lights?138501:18:19.720 --> 01:18:19.920
Yes?138601:18:20.079 --> 01:18:21.960
And I never did answer your question.138701:18:22.079 --> 01:18:26.039
They are beautiful, very and the sea alone is beautiful.138801:18:26.680 --> 01:18:29.680
She has moods, you know, just like a woman, gentle138901:18:29.840 --> 01:18:33.359
sometimes and soothing and suddenly flying into a rage and139001:18:33.479 --> 01:18:34.960
dashing things to pieces.139101:18:34.680 --> 01:18:36.279
And then fighting right down again.139201:18:36.560 --> 01:18:39.239
That's right, I see we feel the same about her.139301:18:39.960 --> 01:18:44.399
Does she frighten you sometimes the same way women frighten me?139401:18:44.600 --> 01:18:47.720
Oh, I mean when I don't understand them.139501:18:47.800 --> 01:18:50.000
Well, I thought it was the general male consensus that139601:18:50.119 --> 01:18:51.399
we weren't supposed.139701:18:50.960 --> 01:18:54.399
To be understood, only loved. Isn't that the rest of it?139801:18:54.479 --> 01:18:57.600
It's something like that anyway. It's a philosophy I disagree with.139901:18:57.920 --> 01:18:58.760
That's refreshing.140001:18:59.079 --> 01:19:01.520
Ah, the lady is mused.140101:19:01.640 --> 01:19:05.039
Not at all. It's just that the lady detects.140201:19:04.680 --> 01:19:08.199
A bachelor because I have a mind of my own.140301:19:09.359 --> 01:19:10.319
That's one good too.140401:19:11.279 --> 01:19:13.000
Listen to me, I'll let singing to you as if140501:19:14.000 --> 01:19:16.119
I believe i'mit, have tried to ends up as if140601:19:16.159 --> 01:19:17.359
I'd known you all my life.140701:19:17.840 --> 01:19:20.399
Wait a minute, there's another which makes it perfectly all right.140801:19:20.920 --> 01:19:27.399
It's that the shipboard friendships last forever business. However, my140901:19:27.600 --> 01:19:34.880
name is Alan Bruce, yours Judith Webster, miss or myth good. Well,141001:19:35.079 --> 01:19:38.560
we got through that quite nicely. You suppose we could141101:19:38.600 --> 01:19:41.119
get through a dance. There's music in the sonle.141201:19:41.600 --> 01:19:45.760
Well, there's no longer any view of the shorelight. However,141301:19:45.880 --> 01:19:47.920
you did say the sea alone was beautiful.141401:19:48.199 --> 01:19:51.279
II was so wrong. There's nothing as monotonous as all141501:19:51.359 --> 01:19:51.760
that water.141601:19:52.399 --> 01:19:54.319
It is kind of sad.141701:19:54.479 --> 01:19:57.880
Yes, well, let's trade it for Champagne. Shall we be believe?141801:19:57.920 --> 01:20:01.279
In a minute? Where are you going over here? I141901:20:01.399 --> 01:20:03.079
wanted to do the skipper a little favor.142001:20:03.920 --> 01:20:04.319
What is it?142101:20:04.680 --> 01:20:04.800
Oh?142201:20:04.920 --> 01:20:08.239
Oh, the lifeboat cover? How did that ever get so loose?142301:20:08.560 --> 01:20:10.640
I don't know.142401:20:10.840 --> 01:20:15.760
I I noticed it a while back there, Well, that142501:20:15.840 --> 01:20:16.279
should do it?142601:20:17.399 --> 01:20:17.960
Strange.142701:20:19.119 --> 01:20:21.920
It was almost as if, oh, no, what are you142801:20:22.039 --> 01:20:22.520
going to say?142901:20:23.399 --> 01:20:23.560
Well?143001:20:23.600 --> 01:20:26.520
I was going to get melodramatic and suggest that someone143101:20:26.600 --> 01:20:27.720
might have been hiding there.143201:20:29.199 --> 01:20:30.159
You mean a stowaway?143301:20:30.680 --> 01:20:32.520
Yes, well, of course it's silly.143401:20:33.359 --> 01:20:38.159
I wouldn't say so. You're joking, not at all. It's143501:20:38.239 --> 01:20:41.239
quite possible someone could have slipped on board and hid143601:20:41.319 --> 01:20:45.239
in that boat. That's why I think we shouldn't mention143701:20:45.439 --> 01:20:50.119
this to anyone, what but only cause and alarm.143801:20:51.119 --> 01:20:51.840
But I don't.143901:20:51.720 --> 01:20:56.560
Understand you really think there might have been someone someone.144001:21:02.680 --> 01:21:05.720
I shall never forget that moment and the thoughts which144101:21:05.760 --> 01:21:09.439
went racing through my mind by my nervousness on the train,144201:21:09.520 --> 01:21:13.960
those horrible headlines about about the blackout killer, that newsboy144301:21:14.199 --> 01:21:18.479
shouted an hour before Alan's strange attitude about the lifeboat,144401:21:18.680 --> 01:21:21.479
the whole unpleasant nature of this voyage, and I promised144501:21:21.479 --> 01:21:25.520
to missus Prescott. I wanted to turn and run, wanted144601:21:25.560 --> 01:21:30.039
to cry out, but somehow I couldn't. If it looked144701:21:30.119 --> 01:21:33.239
like a dream when you when you can't move.144801:21:34.119 --> 01:21:37.520
And then the darkness was swept away, and I was144901:21:37.560 --> 01:21:38.520
no longer dreaming.145001:21:38.720 --> 01:21:39.000
I was.145101:21:39.680 --> 01:21:41.760
I was in Alan's arms, dancing there.145201:21:41.800 --> 01:21:44.920
Was There were laughing, care free people all about us,145301:21:44.960 --> 01:21:47.479
and the ships set all was so bright and friendly.145401:21:48.079 --> 01:21:50.800
I was ashamed for even thinking there might have been145501:21:50.880 --> 01:21:51.560
anything wrong.145601:21:56.760 --> 01:21:59.159
Had enough they just brought out champagne.145701:21:59.439 --> 01:22:01.720
Well in that case, yes, I'd about giving up.145801:22:02.039 --> 01:22:03.520
Well a fine way to talk about my dan.145901:22:03.760 --> 01:22:05.199
You know perfectly well what I mean?146001:22:05.520 --> 01:22:11.119
All right, let him go, waiter, right, you answer there,146101:22:11.199 --> 01:22:14.319
We are all right, thank you, waiter. That'll be all?146201:22:14.720 --> 01:22:17.159
Yes, Oh that does look good?146301:22:17.439 --> 01:22:21.520
And is well what should we talked to? Shipboard friendship?146401:22:21.640 --> 01:22:22.840
Shipboard friendship?146501:22:23.319 --> 01:22:23.520
You know?146601:22:23.680 --> 01:22:25.399
I what is it?146701:22:26.399 --> 01:22:26.960
Something wrong?146801:22:27.600 --> 01:22:29.680
No, im nothing at all? Just thought I saw some146901:22:29.840 --> 01:22:32.439
and I will excuse me a moment. Well, of course147001:22:32.600 --> 01:22:33.239
I won't be long.147101:22:35.479 --> 01:22:38.239
It would be all right, Oh excuse me, miss, But147201:22:38.399 --> 01:22:40.840
the gentleman he dropped this billfold.147301:22:41.079 --> 01:22:43.079
Oh thank you, waiter, I didn't notice. Would you just147401:22:43.199 --> 01:22:44.199
leave it there on the table?147501:22:44.520 --> 01:22:45.720
Very good miss, the day you are.147601:22:48.000 --> 01:22:50.640
The billfold fell open as the waiter placed it on147701:22:50.760 --> 01:22:54.159
the table. I couldn't take my eyes from it. There147801:22:54.239 --> 01:22:58.479
was an identification card in plain sight. The name on147901:22:58.600 --> 01:23:04.600
the card it was not Alan Bruce, it was Charles Drew.148001:23:13.840 --> 01:23:16.680
Sorry to a runof that way. I never should have148101:23:17.159 --> 01:23:20.239
didn't know the fellow at all. Say you you haven't148201:23:20.279 --> 01:23:22.479
touched your champagne. You'll you'll let all the kick go148301:23:22.560 --> 01:23:22.840
out of it?148401:23:22.960 --> 01:23:25.199
You, i'm a said, all the kick has gone out148501:23:25.239 --> 01:23:25.359
of it.148601:23:25.600 --> 01:23:29.000
Well, we'll soon take care of it. Oh my phill phone?148701:23:29.479 --> 01:23:30.199
Where did you find it?148801:23:30.439 --> 01:23:32.119
It was on the floor the way to pick it up?148901:23:32.680 --> 01:23:35.640
The waiter did he look at it? No, Well he149001:23:36.000 --> 01:23:38.960
found an honest man, Eh have to remember him.149101:23:39.640 --> 01:23:41.399
Hadn't you better look to see if you found an149201:23:41.399 --> 01:23:42.000
honest woman.149301:23:43.039 --> 01:23:44.800
I'll take a chance and my honesty.149401:23:44.920 --> 01:23:46.800
Yes, what about a woman's curiosity?149501:23:46.920 --> 01:23:47.279
He wrote?149601:23:47.479 --> 01:23:47.600
Oh?149701:23:47.720 --> 01:23:51.960
I see well now you know well I must stay149801:23:52.000 --> 01:23:54.920
more careful of my things in future. But you know,149901:23:55.119 --> 01:23:59.720
I'm sure you wouldn't tell anyone anything. No, no, I150001:23:59.800 --> 01:24:01.479
knew from the very first, so I can trust you.150101:24:01.960 --> 01:24:02.640
It's interesting.150201:24:03.840 --> 01:24:08.640
Stuck your music? What's up? Sure?150301:24:08.960 --> 01:24:14.479
Then I can't show everybody everybody the first off, internets.150401:24:14.479 --> 01:24:15.279
Something to say to.150501:24:15.359 --> 01:24:17.680
Usk, ladies and gentlemen.150601:24:18.199 --> 01:24:20.239
I'm sorry to break in on your dancing this way,150701:24:20.319 --> 01:24:23.439
but I assure this won't take long. You've just received150801:24:23.439 --> 01:24:26.960
a radiogram from London and I must ask your cooperation150901:24:27.399 --> 01:24:28.279
something important.151001:24:28.880 --> 01:24:29.079
War.151101:24:29.840 --> 01:24:31.079
Oh no, no, it isn't war.151201:24:31.479 --> 01:24:32.800
Nothing nearly as alarming as that.151301:24:33.479 --> 01:24:36.640
However, the London police suspect that we're carrying a stowaway,151401:24:37.199 --> 01:24:39.359
and they've asked us to make a thorough search of151501:24:39.439 --> 01:24:40.840
the ship and report fact to them.151601:24:41.720 --> 01:24:42.079
Criminal.151701:24:46.840 --> 01:24:49.640
No, wait, wait a moment, fees, Ladies and gentlemen. It151801:24:49.840 --> 01:24:53.079
won't help you get excited. The ship is being searched.151901:24:53.199 --> 01:24:55.800
You'll never get off. All we ask is that you152001:24:56.000 --> 01:24:57.000
keep your cabins.152101:24:57.079 --> 01:24:57.279
Luck.152201:25:00.359 --> 01:25:01.960
I was afraid this might happen.152301:25:02.479 --> 01:25:04.359
How long did you expect to keep it from them?152401:25:04.560 --> 01:25:04.920
Actually?152501:25:04.960 --> 01:25:09.039
I was hoping they'd never Judah, but Judith, what's wrong?152601:25:09.520 --> 01:25:11.840
Where are you going? What's the devil?152701:25:12.560 --> 01:25:12.760
See?152801:25:12.800 --> 01:25:13.279
What's the matter?152901:25:13.399 --> 01:25:14.439
Hasn't she run out on you?153001:25:14.640 --> 01:25:15.640
Please let me through, will you?153101:25:15.960 --> 01:25:16.359
Okay?153201:25:16.560 --> 01:25:18.600
Sure, go do it, mister, Don't let her get away.153301:25:19.079 --> 01:25:21.439
You know, maybe she thinks that you're the blackout killer.153401:25:32.079 --> 01:25:33.119
Night for suspense.153501:25:33.279 --> 01:25:36.800

throughout the world. And now it is with pleasure that156001:27:25.479 --> 01:27:28.800
we bring back to our soundstage, Miss Olivia de Haviland156101:27:29.079 --> 01:27:33.600
and mister Reginald Gardner as they continue voyage through Darkness,156201:27:34.119 --> 01:27:37.840
a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.156301:27:50.680 --> 01:27:53.119
I'll never know why I left the dining salon without156401:27:53.199 --> 01:27:55.680
telling him. Certainly they could no longer be any doubt.156501:27:55.720 --> 01:27:58.239
It was all too clear that loose canvas covering on156601:27:58.359 --> 01:28:00.960
the lifeboat, the way he'd been standing there, even the156701:28:01.079 --> 01:28:03.199
name he had given me, Alan Bruce.156801:28:03.640 --> 01:28:06.000
I saw it later on the regular passenger list.156901:28:06.359 --> 01:28:09.279
He must have killed Bruce and thrown him overboard, taking157001:28:09.359 --> 01:28:11.960
not only his name, but his stateroom and clothes.157101:28:12.600 --> 01:28:16.920
It was also so fantastic, worse.157201:28:16.800 --> 01:28:20.800
Than anything else. I had almost fallen in love with him.157301:28:21.600 --> 01:28:24.319
He knew that, I'm certain it was why he was157401:28:24.359 --> 01:28:25.439
so confident.157501:28:25.119 --> 01:28:29.079
That I wouldn't tell anyone, and I didn't, not even157601:28:29.159 --> 01:28:32.800
when I spoke to the first officer about my promise157701:28:32.840 --> 01:28:37.359
to missus Prescott, I wanted to tell him somehow.157801:28:40.560 --> 01:28:43.000
I'll arrange it for early tomorrow morning, and most of157901:28:43.039 --> 01:28:44.840
the passengers will be asleep, thank you.158001:28:45.399 --> 01:28:51.720
I I suppose it's rather unusual, but then missus Prescott158101:28:52.000 --> 01:28:53.039
was an unusual woman.158201:28:54.439 --> 01:28:58.199
I hadn't conducted a burial at sea since the last war. However,158301:28:58.239 --> 01:29:01.239
I'm nothing entirely unprepared. The company officials spoke to me158401:29:01.279 --> 01:29:04.800
about this before sailing, and well, now don't you worry,158501:29:04.840 --> 01:29:05.359
miss Webster.158601:29:05.920 --> 01:29:08.319
The ceremony will be quite in order. I assure you.158701:29:08.880 --> 01:29:10.520
Thank you, I'll meet you for day.158801:29:18.319 --> 01:29:20.920
I wish you hadn't done that. Well, I'm sorry. I158901:29:21.520 --> 01:29:22.880
if you have a habit of startling you.159001:29:23.039 --> 01:29:26.039
What do you want? How long have you been standing there.159101:29:26.039 --> 01:29:27.680
Long enough to overhear that conversation?159201:29:28.039 --> 01:29:28.760
You had no right?159301:29:29.640 --> 01:29:30.199
What are you doing?159401:29:30.760 --> 01:29:33.000
Please? I know what you're going to say. I had159501:29:33.039 --> 01:29:35.560
no right to be here or to listen. However, it's159601:29:35.680 --> 01:29:36.560
fortunate that I did.159701:29:36.800 --> 01:29:37.359
What do you mean?159801:29:38.399 --> 01:29:40.920
I didn't know that it was missus Prescott's desire to159901:29:40.960 --> 01:29:41.720
be bettered at sea.160001:29:42.520 --> 01:29:44.920
No one knew it, but it was her last wish.160101:29:44.960 --> 01:29:45.640
I promised her.160201:29:45.920 --> 01:29:49.000
Would be carried out, and tomorrow morning you're keeping that promise.160301:29:49.399 --> 01:29:53.720
Yes, And now, if you'll excuse me, I don't feel160401:29:53.800 --> 01:29:54.119
very well.160501:29:54.119 --> 01:29:58.159
I'd like wait, please, Judith. You've been avoiding me, haven't you.160601:29:59.000 --> 01:29:59.479
Yes, I have.160701:30:00.159 --> 01:30:03.600
I hope it's only because you've been upset about missus Prescott. Honey,160801:30:04.520 --> 01:30:08.279
that's one reason I'm sorry. I I almost thought we160901:30:08.359 --> 01:30:13.800
were beginning to well, to become very good friends. You161001:30:13.920 --> 01:30:16.159
know you're the only person on board whom I can trust.161101:30:16.760 --> 01:30:18.520
You're very sure about that, aren't you.161201:30:18.760 --> 01:30:21.560
Of course, you know who I am and what I'm161301:30:21.640 --> 01:30:23.960
doing on this ship, and yet you've told no one161401:30:24.640 --> 01:30:27.199
I've wanted to. I know women were never meant to161501:30:27.239 --> 01:30:30.439
keep secrets. However, I'm going to ask you to keep161601:30:30.520 --> 01:30:31.039
one more.161701:30:31.600 --> 01:30:32.159
I'd rather not.161801:30:32.399 --> 01:30:35.840
Sorry, I must include you this time, you see, it161901:30:36.000 --> 01:30:38.840
requires a change in your plans, so they will fit162001:30:38.960 --> 01:30:39.640
in with mine.162101:30:40.199 --> 01:30:41.600
I'm afraid I don't understand.162201:30:42.000 --> 01:30:48.279
It's very simple. Judith. This may upset you, but I162301:30:48.479 --> 01:30:51.560
must ask that you tell them that you've changed your mind,162401:30:52.039 --> 01:30:55.039
that you don't want Missus Prescott buried at sea. What162501:30:56.239 --> 01:30:58.680
you remember what they said, even if they couldn't find162601:30:58.720 --> 01:31:02.000
the stowaway, he'd never get off the ship. Well, he162701:31:02.960 --> 01:31:06.800
could get off very easily if you'd allow him to162801:31:06.840 --> 01:31:09.960
take Missus Prescott's place in that casket?162901:31:10.840 --> 01:31:12.159
What in that casket?163001:31:12.520 --> 01:31:12.720
Yes?163101:31:13.560 --> 01:31:17.760
Clever, eh, clever? Well, not every man would think of it,163201:31:18.520 --> 01:31:21.760
simple as it may seem. Everyone searching the ship, questioning163301:31:21.800 --> 01:31:24.720
each passenger, and all the while the man they were163401:31:24.800 --> 01:31:28.680
seeking would be safe inside the casket. You would only163501:31:28.760 --> 01:31:32.119
have to wait patiently and then be hoisted from the163601:31:32.159 --> 01:31:35.239
ship's hold, lowered onto the pier, and whisked safely away163701:31:35.279 --> 01:31:36.159
in a funeral car.163801:31:37.319 --> 01:31:39.560
When he was discovered by the funeral attendance.163901:31:39.720 --> 01:31:42.920
Oh, I'm sure they'd be so shocked that the dead164001:31:43.079 --> 01:31:46.880
coming to life. He'd have little trouble in dot it stop.164101:31:46.640 --> 01:31:50.199
At you here, If you haven't any respect to the dead, I'm.164201:31:50.079 --> 01:31:53.960
Afraid I have, Oh, Missus Prescott, you mean I should164301:31:53.960 --> 01:31:57.359
have told you that part of it. Her last wish164401:31:57.520 --> 01:32:01.000
has already been carried out. You see, her body was164501:32:01.119 --> 01:32:05.439
removed from the casket the night we sailed. Missus Prescott164601:32:05.600 --> 01:32:07.159
is already very to see.164701:32:11.239 --> 01:32:12.920
You've thought of everything, haven't you.164801:32:13.800 --> 01:32:17.199
Yes, in my position, one must.164901:32:28.760 --> 01:32:31.960
I remained in my cabin all that day and the165001:32:32.119 --> 01:32:36.680
next I was afraid to see him again. I can't165101:32:36.760 --> 01:32:39.960
explain the strange fascination he held over me.165201:32:41.159 --> 01:32:41.960
I remember how.165301:32:41.920 --> 01:32:43.800
Surprised the first officer looked when.165401:32:43.720 --> 01:32:46.359
I told him I had changed my mind about burial.165501:32:46.720 --> 01:32:48.760
It was as if he sensed the truth, as if165601:32:48.800 --> 01:32:52.680
he knew Missus Prescott's body wasn't in the casket, that.165701:32:52.800 --> 01:32:53.479
It was empty.165801:32:54.560 --> 01:32:57.960
But of course it was only my imagination and my165901:32:58.119 --> 01:33:01.159
sense of guilt for this terrible wrong I was doing.166001:33:13.600 --> 01:33:15.840
When we sailed into New York car where I went166101:33:15.880 --> 01:33:20.960
out on deck, he was standing there near the port rail.166201:33:21.039 --> 01:33:23.039
I went up to him. He turned and smiled as166301:33:23.079 --> 01:33:24.239
if he'd been expecting me.166401:33:25.359 --> 01:33:28.800
Oh, there you are. I've missed you haven't been under166501:33:28.800 --> 01:33:29.119
the weather.166601:33:29.720 --> 01:33:31.399
No, I've been perfectly well.166701:33:31.640 --> 01:33:35.119
You had me worried not showing up at dinner. You know,166801:33:35.479 --> 01:33:38.880
I've come to depend on you. Yes, I know, I've166901:33:38.920 --> 01:33:41.359
decided not to let you get away from me. After167001:33:41.439 --> 01:33:42.880
this is all over, we must.167101:33:44.279 --> 01:33:45.199
We haven't much time.167201:33:45.479 --> 01:33:47.239
Oh that's right, this may not be easy.167301:33:47.680 --> 01:33:48.279
Wish me luck.167401:33:49.079 --> 01:33:50.720
Haven't I done more than that already?167501:33:50.840 --> 01:33:55.520
Yes, of course, only I mean like this student.167601:34:00.960 --> 01:34:03.079
As suddenly as he had taken me in his arms,167701:34:03.119 --> 01:34:05.399
he released me, and I remained there by the rail167801:34:05.439 --> 01:34:06.319
as he hurried away.167901:34:06.800 --> 01:34:09.399
I watched as the ship moved on into the harbor168001:34:09.479 --> 01:34:10.880
under the guidance of the tugboats.168101:34:10.920 --> 01:34:13.119
With their shrill, insistent little whistles.168201:34:13.680 --> 01:34:14.319
I listened to.168301:34:16.600 --> 01:34:18.800
The shouts of the crew were long shoreman.168401:34:19.920 --> 01:34:20.600
Soon we were.168501:34:20.479 --> 01:34:25.960
Alongside the pier and the steward was shouting from the168601:34:26.000 --> 01:34:26.920
head of the gangway.168701:34:26.960 --> 01:34:28.760
And then then I.168801:34:28.800 --> 01:34:36.399
Saw it, the casket. They were lowering it to the pier.168901:34:37.079 --> 01:34:39.079
There was a car waiting, a long black car.169001:34:39.199 --> 01:34:41.399
And suddenly I realized what I had done, What a169101:34:41.479 --> 01:34:44.479
fool I had done, What a cowardly, frightened little fool.169201:34:49.520 --> 01:34:53.359
Wait, stop them, don't let them take it, don't let them.169301:34:54.760 --> 01:34:57.079
Wait. Please, you mustn't touch that casket.169401:34:57.119 --> 01:34:57.960
There's something wrong.169501:34:58.920 --> 01:34:59.760
Hey, what's the matter with you?169601:35:00.159 --> 01:35:00.720
Get out of the way.169701:35:00.720 --> 01:35:02.920
Well, but there's a man in there alive.169801:35:03.399 --> 01:35:04.000
He's hiding.169901:35:04.199 --> 01:35:06.800
Yeah, sure, hide and go seek. He's played in a coffin.170001:35:07.000 --> 01:35:09.439
Go on, let him got work to do. Mammon, where170101:35:09.439 --> 01:35:09.680
it all?170201:35:10.399 --> 01:35:10.600
Pea?170301:35:11.239 --> 01:35:13.840
Please, you must listen to me. If you won't call170401:35:13.920 --> 01:35:15.520
the police, someone has got to stop him.170501:35:15.560 --> 01:35:17.479
Hills, did I hear you call for the police.170601:35:17.600 --> 01:35:17.720
Oh?170701:35:17.840 --> 01:35:19.560
Yes, these men won't listen to me. But there's a170801:35:20.640 --> 01:35:23.079
oh man hiding.170901:35:22.880 --> 01:35:25.920
In this casket across there is. We put him in there, Judith,171001:35:26.960 --> 01:35:27.720
what did you say?171101:35:28.000 --> 01:35:30.560
I said we put him in there, or rather we171201:35:30.720 --> 01:35:32.239
let him walk right into our trap.171301:35:33.159 --> 01:35:36.159
Wait a minute, are you trying to tell me that171401:35:36.279 --> 01:35:37.840
someone else inside that casket?171501:35:38.399 --> 01:35:40.359
Well, surely you're not trying to say that you thought171601:35:40.399 --> 01:35:41.039
I was in there?171701:35:41.960 --> 01:35:42.439
Who else?171801:35:42.920 --> 01:35:43.439
Who else?171901:35:44.279 --> 01:35:44.439
Why?172001:35:44.600 --> 01:35:45.520
The blackout killer?172101:35:45.560 --> 01:35:45.960
Of course?172201:35:46.600 --> 01:35:49.439
Then when he's getting away, you're letting him get away.172301:35:50.560 --> 01:35:54.239
Those men know who's inside that castle, and they know172401:35:54.359 --> 01:35:57.880
right where to take him. You, you know, Judith, for172501:35:58.000 --> 01:36:01.279
someone who helped plan this entire thing, right, very strangely.172601:36:01.399 --> 01:36:02.640
I'm acting strangely.172701:36:02.920 --> 01:36:04.520
It's almost as if you didn't know who.172801:36:04.439 --> 01:36:05.159
I am at all.172901:36:06.199 --> 01:36:10.359
I don't what I said, I don't know you I173001:36:10.800 --> 01:36:11.479
still don't.173101:36:12.159 --> 01:36:15.239
But the night I dropped my billfold, I thought, surely.173201:36:15.199 --> 01:36:18.520
All I learned that night was your real name, Charles Drew.173301:36:19.199 --> 01:36:21.960
You mean you didn't look at the rest of my papers?173401:36:22.079 --> 01:36:22.720
Certainly not.173501:36:23.239 --> 01:36:24.319
But that's amazing.173601:36:24.680 --> 01:36:25.399
Say you are.173701:36:25.399 --> 01:36:28.399
Different, yes, and I suppose you're the everyday run of173801:36:28.439 --> 01:36:29.159
the mill type.173901:36:29.960 --> 01:36:31.359
Look what is this?174001:36:31.720 --> 01:36:34.760
Oh it's all very simple, Judith. I thought you'd learned174101:36:34.760 --> 01:36:37.560
of my affiliation with Scotland Yard when you had my billfold.174201:36:37.880 --> 01:36:40.039
You mean you're a detective.174301:36:40.840 --> 01:36:42.399
I've even been called a bloodhound.174401:36:43.000 --> 01:36:47.159
Then all this time you've been trailing the killer.174501:36:47.399 --> 01:36:47.840
That's right.174601:36:48.279 --> 01:36:49.920
We had a tip off he might be on this ship,174701:36:49.920 --> 01:36:52.119
and when I discovered the loose lifeboat covering, I was174801:36:52.159 --> 01:36:52.640
certain of it.174901:36:53.560 --> 01:36:56.760
Then, Alan Bruce, he wasn't murdered at all.175001:36:57.000 --> 01:36:59.800
He never existed, just a name I was using. Good175101:36:59.840 --> 01:37:02.039
by Lord Jude. If you know detectives never travel under175201:37:02.039 --> 01:37:03.560
their own names. Just isn't done.175301:37:03.880 --> 01:37:05.960
No, no, everything has to be done the hard way.175401:37:06.039 --> 01:37:08.399
I suppose that that's why you just didn't find the175501:37:08.520 --> 01:37:10.039
killer and arrest him on board.175601:37:10.239 --> 01:37:11.880
Oh no, hardly.175701:37:12.000 --> 01:37:14.880
You see, I couldn't find him search the ship from175801:37:14.880 --> 01:37:17.319
top to bottom, I guess he really would have given175901:37:17.359 --> 01:37:19.079
me the slip if I hadn't looked in the casket.176001:37:19.239 --> 01:37:20.680
He was hiding there all the time.176101:37:20.840 --> 01:37:21.720
No, it was empty.176201:37:22.399 --> 01:37:23.119
I don't get it.176301:37:23.479 --> 01:37:25.800
Neither did I at first. Then I began to wonder176401:37:25.840 --> 01:37:28.399
why he would remove missus Prescott's body from her casket176501:37:28.479 --> 01:37:31.319
unless it was part of some plan. And I decided176601:37:31.359 --> 01:37:35.880
that it was a weird, yet thoroughly clever plan. Remember176701:37:35.960 --> 01:37:38.199
I told you not every man would think of it.176801:37:38.720 --> 01:37:41.920
Yes, you did say that he had only to.176901:37:42.000 --> 01:37:44.199
Wait patiently until the ship.177001:37:44.079 --> 01:37:46.760
Stocked, then at the last minute slip into the.177101:37:46.800 --> 01:37:48.840
Casket and be hoisted out of the hole onto the177201:37:48.920 --> 01:37:51.399
pier and whisked safely away in the funeral or car.177301:37:52.199 --> 01:37:55.600
And I think if it hadn't been for you, he177401:37:55.680 --> 01:37:56.680
might have gotten away with it.177501:37:56.840 --> 01:37:59.600
For you helped plenty by calling off that bury on177601:37:59.720 --> 01:38:00.439
leaving away.177701:38:00.279 --> 01:38:07.680
Open point, Charles, I really arrest everything. I thought you177801:38:07.960 --> 01:38:08.600
were the killer.177901:38:10.319 --> 01:38:11.640
Well, no, wonder you avoided me.178001:38:11.920 --> 01:38:14.840
I was so mixed up. I thought I knew so much.178101:38:14.920 --> 01:38:18.239
No, it's my fault, darling, I overestimated you. Is it178201:38:18.439 --> 01:38:19.319
all cleared you now?178301:38:20.000 --> 01:38:23.039
Well? I, no, that is it.178401:38:23.279 --> 01:38:27.760
It's clear about how well they the killer and the tasket.178501:38:27.840 --> 01:38:31.439
But I don't know whether you mean about the lifeboats178601:38:31.479 --> 01:38:32.079
and no.178701:38:32.319 --> 01:38:33.479
No about you.178801:38:34.439 --> 01:38:37.199
I'm not clear whether you mean.178901:38:37.279 --> 01:38:38.960
Whether or not I'm really Scotland Yard.179001:38:39.319 --> 01:38:42.760
Well I am, you can really no, I'm just not179101:38:43.039 --> 01:38:43.640
sure whether.179201:38:43.840 --> 01:38:46.960
But Judith, there's nothing else, oh except because that I179301:38:47.079 --> 01:38:47.359
love you?179401:38:47.560 --> 01:38:49.720
And what was that again?179501:38:50.199 --> 01:38:50.920
I said I love you?179601:38:52.960 --> 01:38:54.119
How can I be sure?179701:38:55.239 --> 01:38:56.760
Julia Darling?179801:38:58.039 --> 01:39:04.399
Oh, that makes it very chill?179901:39:20.000 --> 01:39:23.680
And so closes Voyage Through Darkness, starring Olivia de Haviland180001:39:24.000 --> 01:39:30.399

r M a Roma Wines, America's largest selling wines made181901:40:33.159 --> 01:40:37.199
in California, or enjoyment throughout the world.182001:40:39.119 --> 01:40:42.479
This is Olivia de Havlund. I have certainly enjoyed appearing182101:40:42.520 --> 01:40:45.359
here tonight on suspense, which is a program I've admired182201:40:45.399 --> 01:40:49.119
for a very long time. Our government has asked us182301:40:49.159 --> 01:40:51.479
to bring to the attention of women listeners a very182401:40:51.560 --> 01:40:55.439
important message. In spite of our wonderful victories on all182501:40:55.479 --> 01:40:58.319
the fighting fronts, you must remember that the war is182601:40:58.359 --> 01:41:01.319
by no means over or nearli A. Hundreds of thousands182701:41:01.359 --> 01:41:04.359
of women must get into war work this year. You182801:41:04.439 --> 01:41:07.439
are desperately needed, both because you are admirably fitted for182901:41:07.560 --> 01:41:10.520
these jobs and because you represent the only adequate source183001:41:10.560 --> 01:41:12.840
of labor to replace the men in the armed forces183101:41:13.119 --> 01:41:17.119
and in the heavy war industries. Make a realistic appraisal183201:41:17.159 --> 01:41:19.640
of your household duties and your state of health. Talk183301:41:19.720 --> 01:41:21.720
it over with your family and with friends who are183401:41:21.760 --> 01:41:23.920
now employed in war work or in one of the183501:41:23.960 --> 01:41:27.199
branches of the Women's Armed Services. If you are still183601:41:27.279 --> 01:41:30.119
in doubt after analyzing the situation, go to the United183701:41:30.159 --> 01:41:33.199
States Employment Service Office and ask for information about the183801:41:33.279 --> 01:41:36.079
kinds of full time or part time jobs for which183901:41:36.159 --> 01:41:39.760
you are best suited. We cannot stress too highly how184001:41:39.920 --> 01:41:44.000
vitally necessary your immediate action can be. And here is184101:41:44.079 --> 01:41:48.960
a thought for everyone. Six million Americans are fighting over seas.184201:41:49.399 --> 01:41:52.359
Here at home, let us all remember that until final184301:41:52.520 --> 01:41:58.119
victory everywhere, winning the war still comes first with every last.184401:41:58.000 --> 01:41:58.520
One of us.184501:41:59.399 --> 01:42:02.239
Reginald god Wardner appeared through the courtesy of twentieth Century184601:42:02.319 --> 01:42:08.159
Fox producers of Daryl f Xanax Wilson. Next Thursday, same time,184701:42:09.000 --> 01:42:15.920
Joseph Cotton will be your Star of Us, been presented184801:42:16.000 --> 01:42:24.560
by Roma Wines RMA, made in California for enjoyment throughout184901:42:24.600 --> 01:42:52.560
the world. That's the CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.185001:42:58.600 --> 01:43:03.520
I've been thinking a lot about friendship. I'm sure you185101:43:03.640 --> 01:43:09.039
have many, many other friends, more corporeal friends than I,185201:43:09.359 --> 01:43:15.199
and unfortunately I can't quite say the same. But I'm very,185301:43:16.039 --> 01:43:20.239
very happy to have your friendship, your kindness, your thoughts.185401:43:21.239 --> 01:43:22.840
It means the world to me.185501:43:24.399 --> 01:43:25.920
But of course.185601:43:26.479 --> 01:43:32.079
Friendships take time. They have to be nurtured, they have185701:43:32.199 --> 01:43:38.840
to be given kindness and compassion forgiveness. It's a lot185801:43:39.000 --> 01:43:43.359
like gardening, where you plant to seed and you water185901:43:43.520 --> 01:43:47.680
it and you hope against all hope that you are186001:43:47.760 --> 01:43:49.960
not growing a demon tree.186101:44:03.279 --> 01:44:19.359
Die fantasy. I am the spirit of the demon tree.186201:44:29.520 --> 01:44:31.319
I had three pounds on the Jack of diamonds.186301:44:31.680 --> 01:44:34.520
You should tear your money up, Humphreys, It would last186401:44:34.600 --> 01:44:35.039
you longer.186501:44:36.720 --> 01:44:41.159
Perhaps you're right, Crane, But this way I get a186601:44:41.279 --> 01:44:46.119
sense of honest toil, I say, isn't anyone else betting?186701:44:46.479 --> 01:44:50.319
Oh, let's quit, I'm tired of losing.186801:44:50.640 --> 01:44:52.479
Oh look here, old girl, could I loan you a186901:44:52.560 --> 01:44:53.159
few pounds?187001:44:53.520 --> 01:44:54.479
No, thank you, Crane.187101:44:55.000 --> 01:44:57.399
I do enough to get me back to London if187201:44:57.479 --> 01:44:58.640
we ever do get back.187301:44:58.760 --> 01:44:59.960
Now, why do you say that, Claire.187401:45:00.119 --> 01:45:02.640
It's only a matter of a stage getting through here187501:45:02.800 --> 01:45:05.560
to the resort, taking us out of this beastly place.187601:45:05.840 --> 01:45:07.239
Beastly place is right.187701:45:08.279 --> 01:45:10.439
Why people come here for a rest is more than187801:45:10.479 --> 01:45:15.760
I can determine, honestly, I've never spent such an uncomfortable.187901:45:15.199 --> 01:45:16.319
Week in all my life.188001:45:16.359 --> 01:45:19.079
Well, think of me. I've been here three so have you?188101:45:19.199 --> 01:45:22.039
Humph reason. Oh look, here you two.188201:45:22.439 --> 01:45:25.479
It's three o'clock and I'm expecting the stage around eight tonight.188301:45:26.359 --> 01:45:27.520
What do you say the three of us go for188401:45:27.600 --> 01:45:28.760
a bit of a walk through the forest.188501:45:28.880 --> 01:45:32.199
I say, why not? Or here comes Danvers. Perhaps you'll188601:45:32.279 --> 01:45:32.720
join us.188701:45:32.880 --> 01:45:36.960
Anything to get away from this place. Good afternoon, Danvers.188801:45:37.119 --> 01:45:37.680
Greeting is good.188901:45:37.720 --> 01:45:37.960
People.189001:45:38.640 --> 01:45:40.319
I take it you're not happier than when I left189101:45:40.359 --> 01:45:40.880
you a while ago.189201:45:41.000 --> 01:45:43.439
Now the place is as gloomy as a morgue. We've189301:45:43.560 --> 01:45:45.880
just agreed to take a walk in the forest.189401:45:45.680 --> 01:45:46.199
Back of the inn.189501:45:47.000 --> 01:45:49.119
Invited to come along if you like. Sounds like a189601:45:49.159 --> 01:45:50.399
good enough way to pass the time.189701:45:50.880 --> 01:45:52.399
Good, and we all go together.189801:45:53.520 --> 01:45:59.039
Besides, I'm quite interested in that forest out there. You remember,189901:45:59.119 --> 01:46:01.840
of course, the star the night clerk told us last evening.190001:46:02.039 --> 01:46:03.159
Yes, I don't like him.190101:46:03.439 --> 01:46:06.319
He talks through his nose. People should talk through their mouth. No, No,190201:46:07.479 --> 01:46:10.680
I mean what he told us about the forest.190301:46:11.239 --> 01:46:12.760
What about the forest? I didn't hear it.190401:46:14.239 --> 01:46:18.399
Well, the clerk said it was a gorgeous place, lots190501:46:18.399 --> 01:46:21.239
of beautiful foliage, red colors.190601:46:21.640 --> 01:46:25.760
Clear water lakes. But nobody goes there so beautiful, just190701:46:25.840 --> 01:46:35.399
did Clara. You see people have gone there never come back. Ruddish.190801:46:35.680 --> 01:46:36.800
It's a lot of nonsense.190901:46:37.279 --> 01:46:39.760
Why the clerk is just superstitious, that's all I am191001:46:39.800 --> 01:46:42.760
inclined to agree with you, Danvers. Why he even told191101:46:42.840 --> 01:46:46.279
us an absurd story about about a tree out there191201:46:46.319 --> 01:46:50.199
in that forest that's supposed to strangle people, strangle them?191301:46:51.359 --> 01:46:53.479
Oh, I don't know, with its branches.191401:46:53.560 --> 01:46:57.239
I suppose just some absurd legend that people around here191501:46:57.359 --> 01:46:57.880
like to believe.191601:46:58.520 --> 01:47:01.600
I believe it's more than just a legend. Crane, And191701:47:01.720 --> 01:47:02.479
what makes you say that?191801:47:02.600 --> 01:47:03.840
Old man here?191901:47:04.880 --> 01:47:07.880
I talked to the clerk again later last night. He192001:47:08.000 --> 01:47:12.159
dug out this old newspaper clipping for me. Read it, Danvers, Hello,192101:47:14.039 --> 01:47:17.039
old is right, almost illegible?192201:47:17.359 --> 01:47:22.359
Well read it, it says. London, England.192301:47:23.000 --> 01:47:27.880
April twenty first, eighteen fifty seven, is reported that s192401:47:28.000 --> 01:47:32.520
Harace Wakefield, Earl of Dorsha, was found strangled last night192501:47:32.560 --> 01:47:33.520
in Barlow Forest.192601:47:34.399 --> 01:47:37.560
His body was discovered entangled in the branches of a.192701:47:37.640 --> 01:47:38.439
Huge oak tree.192801:47:38.800 --> 01:47:41.039
Ah, go on with the rest of us.192901:47:41.159 --> 01:47:44.920
The earl's death recalls to mind the weird tale of193001:47:45.079 --> 01:47:48.399
the Witch of Barlow Forest, who is said to have193101:47:48.560 --> 01:47:52.199
lived in the sixteenth century, an evil old hag who,193201:47:52.319 --> 01:47:55.000
upon having a falling out with Sir Thomas Holly Wakefield,193301:47:56.159 --> 01:47:59.439
cursed him and warned him that any of his descendants193401:47:59.439 --> 01:48:02.920
went aedest but surely perish.193501:48:03.479 --> 01:48:07.199
Charming old girl wasn't all. Don't scoff until you've heard193601:48:07.199 --> 01:48:07.720
the rest of it.193701:48:09.399 --> 01:48:13.600
She also added that any person or persons with the193801:48:13.680 --> 01:48:19.399
Wakefield descendant would also die. She is said to have193901:48:19.560 --> 01:48:23.840
planted an acorn smeared with her own blood. The acorn194001:48:23.920 --> 01:48:27.319
is supposed to have grown into a towering oak, capable194101:48:27.359 --> 01:48:30.920
of moving about from place to place in Ballow Forest.194201:48:32.239 --> 01:48:34.520
So Horace is the sixth of the Wakefield Lion to194301:48:34.640 --> 01:48:42.920
have perished by strangulation in the forest. Thomas Hurly Wakefield.194401:48:44.960 --> 01:48:50.600
I wonder, hmph, No, wonder what cray? My mother's name194501:48:50.720 --> 01:48:54.760
was Wakefield. I was just wondering if she was related194601:48:54.800 --> 01:48:55.479
to Sir Thomas.194701:48:55.640 --> 01:48:58.840
How, of course, Doc Crane, It's just a story.194801:49:00.000 --> 01:49:00.880
Straordinary story.194901:49:01.239 --> 01:49:02.960
Would you say, yes?195001:49:03.880 --> 01:49:06.239
It wouldn't do very well as a bedtimes to HORRYBOODI195101:49:06.720 --> 01:49:09.560
demon try, I wonder if we could find it.195201:49:10.000 --> 01:49:14.680
Well, let's have a try. I don't let anybody say,195301:49:15.119 --> 01:49:19.840
and let's go. Humprey is going along, I say, Humphreys,195401:49:19.880 --> 01:49:28.720
are you daydreaming? M I was just thinking, wouldn't it Beard,195501:49:28.840 --> 01:49:34.920
if the whole thing we're true? If we all went in.195601:49:35.079 --> 01:49:54.720
There and didn't come back, Well, do you, gentlemen, see195701:49:54.760 --> 01:49:57.199
any way we can get into that forests?195801:49:57.319 --> 01:49:57.760
Dancers?195901:49:57.840 --> 01:50:01.279
Father times? Beard doesn't seem to be an opening anywhere.196001:50:01.520 --> 01:50:03.840
I think we can get in over here? All right,196101:50:04.039 --> 01:50:04.800
coming divers.196201:50:05.279 --> 01:50:08.159
There seems to be a footpath over here, only.196301:50:08.000 --> 01:50:11.039
One along this line of the forest. They seem Yes,196401:50:11.119 --> 01:50:14.319
you're right, Come on, I leave. We'd better remember the196501:50:14.359 --> 01:50:16.600
way back. It'd be hard to get out of here196601:50:16.640 --> 01:50:18.119
if we didn't know where this opening is.196701:50:18.279 --> 01:50:21.319
And don't worry, I'll remember it. I'm good at landmark.196801:50:21.439 --> 01:50:26.079
Go ahead, fair, I'm right behind him. I say, do196901:50:26.239 --> 01:50:31.279
any of you feel that? Feel? What? Denvers? A chill?197001:50:33.159 --> 01:50:38.159
I feel like like it's twenty degrees colder in this place.197101:50:38.920 --> 01:50:41.199
I feel that way too, so do I.197201:50:42.319 --> 01:50:45.239
It's naturally cooler in the woods where the sun doesn't.197301:50:45.000 --> 01:50:47.279
Shine, but not this much cooler.197401:50:47.600 --> 01:50:48.880
I don't like this place.197501:50:49.720 --> 01:50:50.920
I'm for going back to the end.197601:50:51.039 --> 01:50:55.840
Oh, let's get on ahead a little ways. I say197701:50:56.720 --> 01:50:57.800
it is pretty in.197801:50:57.880 --> 01:51:00.600
Here, preuly, I'm not. It gives me the creep.197901:51:01.319 --> 01:51:05.159
Isn't the kind of cold caused by climatic changes I198001:51:05.319 --> 01:51:09.840
was at, Denver, I said, it's a different kind of cold.198101:51:11.279 --> 01:51:14.119
It's the kind that creeps up your spine when some198201:51:15.640 --> 01:51:17.760
some evil comes over your.198301:51:17.680 --> 01:51:21.960
Phone out, Danvers, just letting that newspaper story play on198401:51:22.039 --> 01:51:22.399
your mind.198501:51:22.560 --> 01:51:28.359
Wait a minute, look at tree there in front of us.198601:51:30.000 --> 01:51:35.079
Looks like a human giant off your right, Denvers swearing198701:51:35.359 --> 01:51:36.640
moved just a moment ago.198801:51:36.960 --> 01:51:39.319
It didn't move. I started too.198901:51:41.479 --> 01:51:46.840
That's the strangest looking tree I ever saw. Look at199001:51:46.920 --> 01:51:52.640
that bark. I wonder if play what's wrong? Man?199101:51:52.800 --> 01:51:59.760
I just touched the bark of that tree and it199201:52:01.079 --> 01:52:05.239
it didn't feel like bark at all. No, it felt199301:52:05.359 --> 01:52:08.079
like like human skin.199401:52:09.199 --> 01:52:11.319
Yeah, let me feel it.199501:52:12.920 --> 01:52:13.439
I haven't.199601:52:14.600 --> 01:52:20.720
It's true. It does feel like skin, warm.199701:52:21.840 --> 01:52:28.600
The smooth, and so yeah, it feels that way.199801:52:28.640 --> 01:52:31.520
To meet up, praise you touch it?199901:52:32.159 --> 01:52:32.199
No?200001:52:32.399 --> 01:52:36.079
Thanks, go ahead, Hamhras feel it.200101:52:37.640 --> 01:52:38.600
I have no desire to.200201:52:40.840 --> 01:52:43.800
You. See, I'm sure you're right.200301:52:44.079 --> 01:52:44.479
What's that?200401:52:46.000 --> 01:52:51.880
I feel that this is the demon tree of all200501:52:51.920 --> 01:52:52.279
of ours.200601:52:53.720 --> 01:52:56.199
I think we've seen enough of this place, haven't we.200701:52:57.319 --> 01:53:04.720
Let's get back to the end of all right month, right, ay,200801:53:05.319 --> 01:53:05.920
Wait a minute?200901:53:08.159 --> 01:53:13.239
Have you noticed how dark it is? All of a sudden,201001:53:14.079 --> 01:53:17.079
the sun's behind the cloud. Probably it's impossible to see201101:53:17.119 --> 01:53:18.479
the sky through this foliage.201201:53:18.720 --> 01:53:19.479
It is darker.201301:53:20.479 --> 01:53:22.000
I can hardly see where I'm walking.201401:53:22.520 --> 01:53:26.760
Are you quite sure this is the right way? I201501:53:26.920 --> 01:53:31.159
don't remember this clearing. I don't either. Wait a minute,201601:53:33.039 --> 01:53:34.399
Why heaven, this isn't the way?201701:53:35.680 --> 01:53:38.159
Must be We're on the path, aren't we.201801:53:38.960 --> 01:53:39.000
No?201901:53:40.760 --> 01:53:44.760
No, I don't think we are so dark. Do any202001:53:44.760 --> 01:53:45.439
of you have a fly?202101:53:45.640 --> 01:53:47.239
I certainly don't remember this clearing?202201:53:47.840 --> 01:53:51.000
I think, hm, what was that?202301:53:51.439 --> 01:53:51.840
What was what?202401:53:52.039 --> 01:53:54.840
Claim you?202501:53:56.199 --> 01:54:00.800
You'll think this is foolish, But I swear I felt202601:54:01.000 --> 01:54:04.319
the branch of a tree brush across my face and shoulders.202701:54:05.319 --> 01:54:08.800
That's impossible, there's not a tree.202801:54:08.680 --> 01:54:09.720
But in defeat.202901:54:09.880 --> 01:54:10.720
But I felt it.203001:54:10.840 --> 01:54:11.239
I tell you.203101:54:12.479 --> 01:54:16.560
It rustled like a branch, covered with leaves and det203201:54:17.399 --> 01:54:21.880
It felt warm and soft, like human flesh.203301:54:26.520 --> 01:54:27.359
Are you sure?203401:54:27.720 --> 01:54:27.880
Yes?203501:54:28.520 --> 01:54:33.199
Look, we're lost here. It's dark, dark as night, right.203601:54:33.159 --> 01:54:36.039
In the middle of the afternoon, and we've lost the203701:54:36.359 --> 01:54:39.239
path in that tree. Easy, Crane, I'll keep your head man,203801:54:39.479 --> 01:54:41.960
I'm getting out of here. I'm not going to stay203901:54:42.039 --> 01:54:42.880
here and be murdered.204001:54:43.000 --> 01:54:45.520
Dan stay with us.204101:54:45.600 --> 01:54:48.119
No, no, I'm going to find the path and get204201:54:48.159 --> 01:54:48.560
out of here.204301:54:48.680 --> 01:54:50.399
Paine, stay here, we'll find a way back.204401:54:50.479 --> 01:54:52.000
I don't want to stay here and die.204501:54:52.079 --> 01:54:54.199
I want to get away from this way to.204601:54:54.359 --> 01:54:54.840
Be a fool.204701:55:00.039 --> 01:55:08.640
Yeah gone, Now he is in for it. We're better204801:55:08.720 --> 01:55:14.560
off by staying together. I don't know, but we are not.204901:55:18.399 --> 01:55:19.119
Sounds like he's trying.205001:55:19.479 --> 01:55:22.399
Come on, we kind have gotten five right over here.205101:55:22.439 --> 01:55:28.520
I think I'll take it easy. I'll be cauble. Oh daddy, Yes,205201:55:30.119 --> 01:55:32.760
stretched out on the ground like.205301:55:34.479 --> 01:55:36.680
Like he was dead.205401:55:43.439 --> 01:55:52.000
M Look look at him. Marks on his throat. Five205501:55:52.760 --> 01:55:55.880
hands with me. That wasn't done by hands?205601:55:57.560 --> 01:56:04.279
See Dames on his skin, greenstain.205701:56:09.359 --> 01:56:12.359
Thomas Wakefield, Craye.205801:56:12.680 --> 01:56:15.159
Oh, what a horrible way for him to die.205901:56:16.000 --> 01:56:20.760
Craya a tree. This is where we first saw it.206001:56:21.039 --> 01:56:21.680
Now it's gone.206101:56:23.680 --> 01:56:24.560
This is where it was.206201:56:24.640 --> 01:56:25.319
I'm sure of it.206301:56:25.479 --> 01:56:30.520
Then what's happened to it? Important question is what are206401:56:30.560 --> 01:56:33.279
we going to do with Crane? And have to leave206501:56:33.319 --> 01:56:36.000
him here and we can find a way out of206601:56:36.079 --> 01:56:38.159
this place for Crane.206701:56:39.079 --> 01:56:40.760
It happened so quickly.206801:56:42.039 --> 01:56:43.880
One minute he was with us, in the next we206901:56:43.960 --> 01:56:46.720
wanted him not to leave us. The three of us207001:56:46.760 --> 01:56:47.920
had better stay close together.207101:56:47.960 --> 01:56:49.800
Oh yes, for heaven's sakes, let's not get that, and207201:56:49.880 --> 01:56:50.279
don't come on.207301:56:52.720 --> 01:56:58.039
There's nothing we can do for Crane. Now, we've got207401:56:58.119 --> 01:57:02.439
to find our way out of here. Just doesn't seem right.207501:57:03.039 --> 01:57:03.680
Leaving him there.207601:57:03.800 --> 01:57:07.920
It's all we can do. Come on, how do we207701:57:08.039 --> 01:57:08.760
know which way to go?207801:57:10.319 --> 01:57:10.760
We don't.207901:57:12.359 --> 01:57:16.039
All we can do is keep moving and hope to208001:57:16.159 --> 01:57:17.159
find into out again.208101:57:17.479 --> 01:57:22.800
It's horrible wandering about like this, like like nothing but208201:57:22.880 --> 01:57:24.840
a group of Marionnette.208301:57:24.760 --> 01:57:30.760
Controlled by what strange properteer? What's that, Humphreys.208401:57:31.560 --> 01:57:36.039
I said, controlled by what strange properteer?208501:57:37.880 --> 01:57:40.159
Surely you don't think we've been purposely led into this?208601:57:40.680 --> 01:57:44.720
Who can say? Oh, now, train without the deep end.208701:57:45.520 --> 01:57:46.640
We've got to keep out him.208801:57:46.920 --> 01:57:50.119
We found a way in, surely we'll find a way out.208901:57:50.800 --> 01:57:55.800
Yes, so we didn't find a way in. But what209001:57:55.920 --> 01:57:58.520
about the chill, the darkness?209101:57:58.840 --> 01:58:00.359
Who ex nation?209201:58:02.039 --> 01:58:06.119
Perhaps the storm is coming up. That could be, It209301:58:06.880 --> 01:58:09.840
couldn't if storms don't rise that quickly.209401:58:09.960 --> 01:58:10.640
In this part of the.209501:58:10.640 --> 01:58:16.600
Country, and the darkness came down on this forest like209601:58:16.720 --> 01:58:18.680
a strad Yes.209701:58:20.680 --> 01:58:29.560
Came so quickly, reminded me of how a corpse must209801:58:29.680 --> 01:58:33.119
feel in his coffin, and the lid is put over.209901:58:33.399 --> 01:58:36.439
Look at, Humphries, I'm about fed up with that sort210001:58:36.479 --> 01:58:40.119
of talk. Only a fool refuses to face the fact standards.210101:58:41.640 --> 01:58:43.479
You know, this isn't in the ordinary situation.210201:58:43.560 --> 01:58:43.880
We're in.210301:58:45.479 --> 01:58:49.760
A chill of winter, in the summer time, darkness and210401:58:49.920 --> 01:58:54.640
mid afternoon, and the tree that strength.210501:58:54.960 --> 01:58:58.439
It is probably just an accident trains day.210601:58:59.039 --> 01:59:01.000
Why don't you stop trying to tell yourself that the210701:59:01.079 --> 01:59:05.079
tree was only an imaginary thing. We all know that210801:59:05.199 --> 01:59:09.920
it's real, Hungris, and there's alive as any of us.210901:59:11.640 --> 01:59:13.840
The bark didn't feel like human flesh.211001:59:15.680 --> 01:59:18.600
Humphries. Look what.211101:59:20.159 --> 01:59:24.199
What is it? A gold light that ahead of us?211201:59:24.600 --> 01:59:29.560
It's the tree there? Now, what do you think, Danvers?211301:59:31.000 --> 01:59:37.279
Look, it's the tree moving along in a glow phosphorescent light. Hiddens,211401:59:38.600 --> 01:59:41.800
it's the same tree. It looks like a human giant.211501:59:42.079 --> 01:59:44.600
It was low well near here, it.211601:59:44.720 --> 01:59:45.319
Was back there?211701:59:45.720 --> 01:59:47.560
Do you too see what the tree is carrying.211801:59:48.159 --> 01:59:53.319
It's carrying crane it's got him tucked up under that211901:59:53.560 --> 01:59:57.279
huge branch that looks like a human arm.212001:59:58.520 --> 02:00:03.520
It's fading now, disappearing again, fading away.212102:00:04.640 --> 02:00:04.920
It is.212202:00:07.279 --> 02:00:07.600
Gone.212302:00:09.720 --> 02:00:10.199
It's gone.212402:00:10.720 --> 02:00:14.119
Now Do you believe, Davers? Now? Do you admit that212502:00:14.279 --> 02:00:15.640
the tree is alive?212602:00:16.039 --> 02:00:17.439
What else can I believe?212702:00:18.920 --> 02:00:19.640
I don't know.212802:00:21.960 --> 02:00:23.199
He's falling into a water pool.212902:00:24.319 --> 02:00:27.560
Has really think you?213002:00:29.720 --> 02:00:32.880
I ended my wais Get me out of hair stands,213102:00:32.960 --> 02:00:34.560
till dampers. You just sink deeper.213202:00:34.800 --> 02:00:35.840
Wait, help me.213302:00:35.880 --> 02:00:36.439
Out of here.213402:00:37.319 --> 02:00:39.359
That's something I can get onto.213502:00:39.520 --> 02:00:41.840
Here, Grady, end of that pool.213602:00:43.640 --> 02:00:51.680
Rabbit averas grabbitte and that three brands if they ain't.213702:00:51.560 --> 02:00:53.439
Me, Lord listen Clara.213802:00:54.840 --> 02:00:55.760
A three brands.213902:00:56.800 --> 02:01:00.520
But we can't be I can't get you Boom.214002:01:01.760 --> 02:01:03.319
The gods didn't leading me.214102:01:03.399 --> 02:01:05.520
By Humphrey do something he's up to.214202:01:05.640 --> 02:01:10.239
He showed us now because I can't make it, I214302:01:10.359 --> 02:01:13.680
can't help tag may save me.214402:01:15.039 --> 02:01:16.199
You go under the big stands.214502:01:17.520 --> 02:01:19.039
There's nothing I can do that.214602:01:20.680 --> 02:01:21.600
The damon's drain.214702:01:22.680 --> 02:01:23.800
There's not shaving.214802:01:25.920 --> 02:01:26.159
Mad.214902:01:36.079 --> 02:01:36.800
He's gone.215002:01:38.279 --> 02:01:41.119
Poor devil didn't have a chance.215102:01:43.239 --> 02:01:44.239
We've got to get out of here.215202:01:45.880 --> 02:01:46.640
We're all doomed.215302:01:47.720 --> 02:01:49.520
It's the way you curse Lever stop it.215402:01:49.800 --> 02:01:50.479
It is the curse.215502:01:51.439 --> 02:01:52.119
We're helpful.215602:01:52.960 --> 02:01:54.760
There's nothing we can do to save ourselves.215702:01:54.960 --> 02:01:59.319
Clever, Stop. We can't give up. We've got to find215802:01:59.359 --> 02:02:03.439
a way out of this place. Be careful for your215902:02:03.479 --> 02:02:07.840
step whatever happens, keep your head Clara, for heaven.216002:02:07.720 --> 02:02:14.319
See h.216102:02:36.680 --> 02:02:37.800
Oh wow, praise.216202:02:39.560 --> 02:02:40.520
I'm so tired.216302:02:42.680 --> 02:02:44.000
We've walked for hours.216402:02:45.239 --> 02:02:48.039
I say, it's getting a little lighter.216502:02:48.880 --> 02:02:49.199
Clara.216602:02:50.199 --> 02:02:52.920
Up ahead, there isn't that a path? What?216702:02:54.399 --> 02:02:59.119
Oh, you're right, humphries the path we came in on.216802:02:59.520 --> 02:03:02.239
And look there's an opening through the tree.216902:03:02.359 --> 02:03:06.680
Yes, I remember the landmarks. Oh, thanks God for the life.217002:03:06.800 --> 02:03:10.399
Come on out of this place. There's nothing we can217102:03:10.479 --> 02:03:34.560
do for Danvers or claim now, Clara.217202:03:35.399 --> 02:03:36.920
Yes, I.217302:03:38.479 --> 02:03:42.119
Wonder if you feel as I do. I thought we'd217402:03:42.159 --> 02:03:45.960
be safe back here in a hotel. I don't know217502:03:46.000 --> 02:03:49.239
how to describe it. I have a feeling that this217602:03:49.359 --> 02:03:50.680
whole business isn't over yet.217702:03:51.399 --> 02:03:56.520
I know I've had the same feeling, a feeling that217802:03:57.680 --> 02:03:59.720
we're not finished with the demon.217902:03:59.439 --> 02:04:05.560
Tree, or that it's not finished with us. Yes, exactly,218002:04:08.560 --> 02:04:11.640
yeah my room. Bet I go in there and have218102:04:11.720 --> 02:04:13.479
a drink, Claire, Heaven knows we need one.218202:04:13.600 --> 02:04:15.439
Yes, I certainly do.218302:04:17.119 --> 02:04:19.479
What's worrying me is how am I going to explain218402:04:19.560 --> 02:04:21.039
what happened to Craig in the Danvers?218502:04:22.840 --> 02:04:29.119
Wait a minute, how get the light? Humphrey, good lord.218602:04:29.760 --> 02:04:32.720
The branch of a tree about two feet long. Look218702:04:32.800 --> 02:04:36.760
at it? Look at it, a fresh living branch.218802:04:37.119 --> 02:04:37.319
Down.218902:04:38.119 --> 02:04:39.560
Oh Humphries, I'm getting out of here.219002:04:39.560 --> 02:04:41.319
Where are you going down to the lobby and wait219102:04:41.359 --> 02:04:41.960
for this tape?219202:04:42.000 --> 02:04:42.920
Hold on, I'll go with you.219302:04:43.680 --> 02:04:47.000
Wait, Clara, Wait, it's three flights down. Let's take the elevator.219402:04:48.359 --> 02:04:49.520
We can get the thing up here.219502:04:49.720 --> 02:04:51.800
It's automatic. Just push the button, it'll come up.219602:04:52.319 --> 02:04:56.600
Humphrey, Look, someone, let this deal gate open.219702:04:56.760 --> 02:05:01.840
I say, that's dangerous, certainly, But why.219802:05:01.920 --> 02:05:03.039
Is pushing stow me?219902:05:03.239 --> 02:05:04.159
Brow? Wow?220002:05:09.840 --> 02:05:16.920
Good lord Clara, Clara, a branch.220102:05:17.960 --> 02:05:19.399
It pushed her on the shif.220202:05:20.800 --> 02:05:25.720
It's that to me, get away, get away, help me,220302:05:26.359 --> 02:05:28.600
help me somebody for three.220402:05:30.039 --> 02:05:30.279
Three.220502:05:31.119 --> 02:05:32.520
It's stalking.220602:05:41.039 --> 02:05:47.279
Any descendant of Sir Thomas Hurley Wakefield Renters Barlowed forest220702:05:48.199 --> 02:05:52.239
is doomed to die, and all who enter the forest220802:05:53.279 --> 02:05:57.520
with him are likewise doomed.220902:05:59.600 --> 02:05:59.920
Mm hm.221002:06:19.520 --> 02:06:43.319
Dark Santasy, you have just heard The Demon Tree, an221102:06:43.359 --> 02:06:48.039
original tale of dark fantasy. By Scotch Bishop to Night's221202:06:48.079 --> 02:06:52.960
cast included Eleanor Naylor Coran as Clara, Ben Morris who221302:06:53.079 --> 02:06:57.199
was Humphreys. Garland Moss took the part of Danvers, and221402:06:57.359 --> 02:06:59.359
Murrella Schofield was heard as cream.221502:07:01.960 --> 02:07:06.319
Well, my dear, I hope the music helps soothe the221602:07:07.239 --> 02:07:11.319
savage soul. But I am so glad you join me tonight.221702:07:11.439 --> 02:07:15.039
And I hope as you head out for the evening221802:07:15.159 --> 02:07:19.159
and I to wherever it is, that if I go,221902:07:20.319 --> 02:07:24.239
you know that I'll always be here for you at222002:07:24.279 --> 02:07:28.239
the same time and the same place. All you have222102:07:28.359 --> 02:07:33.359
to do is show up. And before you leave, before222202:07:33.439 --> 02:07:38.000
you make your way through the woods, through the streets,222302:07:39.239 --> 02:07:46.039
through the dark, can you do me just one little favor.222402:07:47.239 --> 02:07:49.880
As you lay your head down on your soft and222502:07:50.520 --> 02:07:55.119
cool pillow and begin to make your way to the222602:07:55.239 --> 02:07:59.920
land of Nod, take one moment and be thank you222702:08:00.079 --> 02:08:03.840
for for what you have. I'll be seeing.222802:08:05.199 --> 02:08:16.800
Takom like being into follow all into again, robbing them,222902:08:16.880 --> 02:08:22.800
bring wrobing, mumbling, break
