Terrifying & True | Oak Island Money Pit: Treasure Hunters, Flood Tunnels & Natural Sinkholes

Oak Island’s Money Pit has drawn treasure hunters into a centuries-long cycle of excavation, flooding, tantalizing finds, and theories that grow faster than the hole itself.

The popular origin story begins in 1795, when Daniel McGinnis and two friends noticed a depression and signs of earlier activity on the Nova Scotia island. Their digging reportedly revealed layers of timber at regular intervals, encouraging later companies to descend in search of pirate gold. As shafts deepened, seawater rushed in, giving rise to the legend of an ingenious artificial flood tunnel protecting something valuable below.

Terrifying & True follows the major digs, the disputed “90-foot stone,” the collapse and flooding of shafts, and the deaths associated with the search. The treasure theories range from Captain Kidd and other pirates to the Knights Templar, lost religious artifacts, Marie Antoinette’s jewels, and manuscripts attributed to Shakespeare or Francis Bacon.

The episode also explores the geological explanation. Natural sinkholes, porous limestone, underground cavities, and ordinary groundwater can create layered deposits and sudden flooding without a hidden engineering project. Small artifacts prove people used Oak Island; they do not prove a vast treasure chamber. Whether the Money Pit holds buried history or only the wreckage of previous searches, the real story is the human obsession that refuses to stop digging.
