Terrifying & True | The Covina Christmas Massacre — A Killer in a Santa Suit

A man dressed as Santa Claus opened fire at an Ortega family Christmas Eve gathering in Covina, California, then burned the home with a homemade fuel sprayer.

On December 24, 2008, Bruce Pardo arrived carrying wrapped equipment and multiple weapons. Eight-year-old Katrina Yuzefpolsky survived the first shot, while relatives fled through windows and across neighboring yards. Gunfire and the rapidly spreading blaze killed nine members of the Ortega family, including Pardo’s former wife, Sylvia Ortega.

Terrifying & True reconstructs the attack, the Santa disguise, and the preparations investigators uncovered afterward. Pardo had recently finalized a bitter divorce, lost his job, accumulated debt, and been ordered to make financial payments to Sylvia. Police found weapons, ammunition, cash strapped to his body, and a booby-trapped rental car after he died by suicide at his brother’s home.
