Ah, there you are. Unknown Broadcast returns with old-time radio horror stories, classic OTR, and radio suspense for those who like the dark close and the volume low, my dear. Tonight the valves warm and the quiet learns to talk:

- 🔥 Hell Hath No Fury — Fame can’t drown jealousy; a private curtain falls where the applause can’t reach.
- 🌒 The Night Reveals — Smoke on a coat, matches in a pocket; small sparks confess what lips refuse.
- 🔑 Lady With a Key — Footsteps where no one should walk, a lock that turns itself, and a door that remembers you.
- 🩸 The Red Mark — A crimson sign where mercy should be; debts tallied in pulses until the jungle goes still.

When the footsteps stop outside your door, that isn’t silence—it’s them listening back.

The collection moves between distinct radio dramas rather than treating them as interchangeable scares, using the Unknown Broadcast frame to connect old-time radio suspense, wilderness isolation, and revenge and supernatural justice.

1
00:00:10.039 --> 00:00:14.240
Well, hello, my dear, So good to have you back.

2
00:00:15.320 --> 00:00:21.960
As they always say, new year, new fear, or at

3
00:00:22.079 --> 00:00:26.679
least I think that's what they say. I hope you've

4
00:00:26.679 --> 00:00:30.519
had a wonderful time, enjoying the food, the fun and

5
00:00:30.559 --> 00:00:37.280
the festivities. I've been doing some reflection of my own,

6
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:43.039
nothing too devious. But let's get you a seat, Let's

7
00:00:43.039 --> 00:00:47.119
get you something warm to drink. Now that the holidays

8
00:00:47.159 --> 00:00:54.840
are over, the weather really turns cold and uncaring. Sometimes

9
00:00:54.880 --> 00:01:01.000
I feel like when the wind blows that frigid air. Well,

10
00:01:01.960 --> 00:01:06.000
hell hath no fury like that?

11
00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:25.359
Come in.

12
00:01:27.480 --> 00:01:30.359
Welcome. I'm a g Marshall.

13
00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:36.959
In his Immortal Comedy of Manners, William Congreve wrote, heaven

14
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:42.640
hath no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell

15
00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:48.439
a fury like a woman scorned. That was over two

16
00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:53.640
hundred years ago. Have matters changed in the intervening centuries?

17
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:58.439
Judge for yourself in this story which happens today.

18
00:02:00.680 --> 00:02:01.439
Who is it, dear?

19
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:06.400
I thought you were sound asleep all those pills.

20
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:09.400
Something woke me for the moment. I don't know why

21
00:02:09.479 --> 00:02:14.199
I came alive to suddenly I'm along belling.

22
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:14.960
Me, which will never ring.

23
00:02:15.639 --> 00:02:16.800
You're not going to be alive.

24
00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:17.759
How are you doing with that?

25
00:02:18.280 --> 00:02:20.719
Playing a fellow to your destimon of my load?

26
00:02:20.840 --> 00:02:22.759
No, Marty, you can't be serious.

27
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:27.479
Yet I'll not shake you r blood nor scarf that

28
00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:29.280
whiter skin of yours than snow.

29
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:31.319
Yet you must die.

30
00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:35.439
I'll put out the light and then put.

31
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:39.159
Out the light if I can quench.

32
00:02:38.759 --> 00:02:41.240
Spee a.

33
00:02:43.639 --> 00:02:45.039
No more moving.

34
00:02:46.719 --> 00:03:02.080
Still as the grave, My Wife, My Wife.

35
00:03:03.199 --> 00:03:08.000
Our mystery drama Hell Hath no Fury was written especially

36
00:03:08.039 --> 00:03:12.360
for the Mystery Theater by Ian Martin and stars William Redfield,

37
00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:30.159
Mark Stanton and Emily Lawrence. The Wedding of a decade,

38
00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:33.919
the first a shining light of the classical theater, the

39
00:03:33.960 --> 00:03:38.120
second a new, fresh and lovely star of the screen

40
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:44.120
who transcended any picture. She illuminated, a public romance shared

41
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:47.719
avidly by the fans that ranks with Romeo and Juliet,

42
00:03:47.800 --> 00:03:53.280
Eloise and Abelard Desdemona and Othello, and which is destined

43
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.560
to end as tragically. But the starter story one must

44
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:02.960
have a beginning an ending. So let's go back a

45
00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:07.759
few days before Emily Lawrence's sudden and tragic death, back

46
00:04:07.800 --> 00:04:12.280
to a meeting between Emily's half sister. Elsewe whitmore and

47
00:04:12.680 --> 00:04:17.600
Mark Stanton, who the devil?

48
00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:20.000
All right, DoD you.

49
00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:21.839
Better get your clothes on and be ready to scoot.

50
00:04:21.879 --> 00:04:25.079
I'll give you the high sign handing my down, will

51
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:27.279
you whoever it is, they aren't going to quit.

52
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:28.680
Thanks to me.

53
00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:38.839
Oh it's you. Where did you get a key?

54
00:04:38.920 --> 00:04:42.199
Elseweth one of the privileges of the family, even a

55
00:04:42.279 --> 00:04:42.879
half sister.

56
00:04:43.319 --> 00:04:47.759
Well, come in by ring the bell when you have

57
00:04:47.800 --> 00:04:48.160
a key.

58
00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.680
I wanted to give you time to put your robe on.

59
00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:57.639
Oh, I was just trying to snatch forty winks.

60
00:04:57.639 --> 00:04:59.439
Oh do I know her? Didn't You used to go

61
00:04:59.439 --> 00:05:01.920
into the name of tigered to leave the jungle cat.

62
00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:05.319
Funny, very funny, not to me, or.

63
00:05:05.240 --> 00:05:08.560
Would it be to my sister? I get rid of remark.

64
00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:10.560
I want to talk to you. I will be in

65
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:12.959
the living room on the phone, my back to the door,

66
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:18.040
pretending your matinee curtain isn't coming down early. I don't

67
00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:19.959
think I won't take a look at what's your style?

68
00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:29.839
This month's brother in law be elshus anything stirring, Oh

69
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:34.439
how much? No, No, it's too low. They've got to

70
00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:38.240
come up with seven hundred. Well let them ste on it.

71
00:05:38.839 --> 00:05:45.600
I'll be back in the office soon plus always No, No,

72
00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:48.120
I was just looking at it would be rising star.

73
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:51.319
Listen if there's anything urgent. I'm at my sister's apartment.

74
00:05:51.319 --> 00:05:53.879
It's listed under Mark Stanton on the Rolodex, but it's

75
00:05:53.879 --> 00:05:56.399
still my sister's apartment.

76
00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:02.199
Bye, Well to what do I owe this rather surprising

77
00:06:02.279 --> 00:06:03.319
early afternoon visit?

78
00:06:04.439 --> 00:06:06.839
I thought agents were always busy during lunch hours.

79
00:06:07.079 --> 00:06:09.720
Sorry to disappoint you. We take a breather now and then,

80
00:06:09.959 --> 00:06:10.879
don't you ever.

81
00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:11.959
What does that mean?

82
00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:15.040
Didn't I surprise you hard at work?

83
00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:15.240
Now?

84
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:18.879
Look, Eleanor brought me a new treatment she wanted me

85
00:06:18.920 --> 00:06:19.319
to see.

86
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:22.439
I'll bet she did a screen treatment, a script. Okay, cathanover,

87
00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:26.040
that's enough banter. Are we alone in this joint? Now?

88
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:28.879
Oh, don't tell me you want to open old books

89
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:29.560
between us.

90
00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:33.079
No, this is a new one. We close the other

91
00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:34.199
when you married.

92
00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:35.639
My sister half sister.

93
00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:39.839
Do you have to rub it in? I'm plain, flat

94
00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:43.079
chested and no hardhat ever whistled at my legs. But

95
00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:44.000
I still have brains.

96
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:47.240
Who needs them when you have Emily's thirty six twenty

97
00:06:47.240 --> 00:06:49.399
four thirty six and even the members of the Union

98
00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:51.800
League club look up from the Wall Street Journal.

99
00:06:51.839 --> 00:06:54.920
When she moves by, Mark, sit down, I'm about to

100
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:56.279
kick your feet from under you.

101
00:06:56.600 --> 00:06:57.560
What are you talking about?

102
00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:02.120
It's a pity you met me before Emily, isn't it, Mark,

103
00:07:03.399 --> 00:07:04.199
and needed me?

104
00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:06.560
I beg your pardon.

105
00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:09.480
So without an agent and one who cared, you were

106
00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:12.600
nothing but a stud. If I hadn't nursed and supported

107
00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.680
you through speech lessons, singing lesson small parts and nothing

108
00:07:15.720 --> 00:07:16.800
out of towndown than you.

109
00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.279
I may not have had much education, but I always

110
00:07:19.319 --> 00:07:19.720
had talent.

111
00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:20.879
Oh, I'll grant you that.

112
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:22.680
But you're lazy.

113
00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:26.279
And once you met Emily and knew she had all

114
00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:28.839
the looks and all the money, it was time to

115
00:07:28.920 --> 00:07:32.959
drop me. But don't forget Emily's money comes from being

116
00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:36.680
a film star, and I made her that.

117
00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.399
Let's forget past history, Mark.

118
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:43.639
Since I came back from Europe, I've been going over

119
00:07:43.720 --> 00:07:47.759
Emily's financial position, what right of uta? I happened to

120
00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:50.399
be her manager as well as her agent, and I

121
00:07:50.439 --> 00:07:53.759
don't like what I see. Emily has never made more

122
00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:55.839
in her life. You have never spent more.

123
00:07:56.079 --> 00:07:59.600
We have a front to keep up as two reigning stars.

124
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:04.279
Wash, You're a successful ham who draws suburban ladies with

125
00:08:04.360 --> 00:08:08.279
delusions of culture and dreams of vicarious God knows what.

126
00:08:08.519 --> 00:08:11.639
To the theater. You make teanuts compared to Emily, and

127
00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:13.480
spend the kind of money she makes.

128
00:08:13.240 --> 00:08:15.759
A temporary loan or two. I have some pictures in

129
00:08:15.800 --> 00:08:16.199
the world.

130
00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:19.439
Come on, Mark, you couldn't draw flies to a movie theater,

131
00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:23.000
even in an exploitation film. So I have talked it

132
00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:27.480
over with Emily, And as the carried t woman used

133
00:08:27.519 --> 00:08:30.399
to say, the buck stops here.

134
00:08:32.120 --> 00:08:32.799
What does that mean?

135
00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:36.279
I'm putting Emily on an allowance enough to take care

136
00:08:36.440 --> 00:08:40.559
of her needs. You can handle the apartment in the rest,

137
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:44.679
but no more play money, little boy. And that's only

138
00:08:44.720 --> 00:08:47.720
the beginning. The next thing I'm going after is her will,

139
00:08:48.360 --> 00:08:51.440
the one that leaves everything to you. If anything should

140
00:08:51.480 --> 00:08:54.480
ever happen to my sister, I can think of better

141
00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:58.080
causes for her estate to serve than Mark Stanton the

142
00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:06.200
heel of Ham in the elevator. All my efforts to

143
00:09:06.279 --> 00:09:11.120
stay calm and unruffled meeting Mark again dissipated into thin air.

144
00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:16.159
Thank Heaven, I was alone as my knees turned to water,

145
00:09:16.279 --> 00:09:19.639
thinking and dreaming of him as once it had been

146
00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:23.399
between us. By the time I reached the ground floor,

147
00:09:23.399 --> 00:09:26.200
I knew I needed another session with Madam Erech.

148
00:09:30.039 --> 00:09:32.360
Why do we imagine you can ever fail?

149
00:09:33.399 --> 00:09:36.879
You are one of us, I have always thought one

150
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:38.600
of the strongest in the Kovn.

151
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:44.000
I never have doubts, except except in one area.

152
00:09:45.240 --> 00:09:49.879
Every Achilles has his vulnerable hum every witch had.

153
00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:50.960
Our own weakness.

154
00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:55.000
We must fight always against the world to hold the

155
00:09:55.080 --> 00:10:02.159
true faith. Common daughter, Let us pray together, draw the

156
00:10:02.279 --> 00:10:07.279
drapes while I light the candles.

157
00:10:13.480 --> 00:10:17.200
Now step within the magic circle with me.

158
00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:25.639
Yes or greater reck mother of us, all who crouched

159
00:10:25.639 --> 00:10:27.519
in the black shadow of your wings.

160
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:36.240
I conjure thee from the instrument by Lucifer, Prince of Darkness,

161
00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:40.759
by all the stars, which rule by the four elements,

162
00:10:41.720 --> 00:10:46.039
that we may obtain, by the the perfect issue of

163
00:10:46.200 --> 00:10:52.159
all how advires, which also seemed to perform without easier,

164
00:10:53.080 --> 00:10:54.559
without deception.

165
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:02.480
We are answered, I know what I'm doing is right,

166
00:11:04.120 --> 00:11:07.440
while it turn out that way, Will you read the

167
00:11:07.519 --> 00:11:08.440
tower cards for me?

168
00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:13.279
I am your sister, in said, I am at your command.

169
00:11:14.200 --> 00:11:21.960
Sit down while I shuffled the cards. You know what

170
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:27.559
that means? Without asking the King of coins a sign

171
00:11:27.759 --> 00:11:32.399
of ill omen was the question asked for yourself.

172
00:11:33.480 --> 00:11:36.960
No, I will ask one for myself now.

173
00:11:37.799 --> 00:11:45.120
Then the ace of clups. That is a promise of

174
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.000
beauty and fertility for me?

175
00:11:49.279 --> 00:11:49.679
Why not?

176
00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:58.799
You are young, scarcely beautiful. One more question, one only

177
00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:08.039
I'm acting it in my mind. The card of death,

178
00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:15.200
the nine of sorts. You know, not my sister, Not

179
00:12:15.320 --> 00:12:15.840
my sister.

180
00:12:21.399 --> 00:12:24.159
I love you, Emily, I love you Mark.

181
00:12:26.039 --> 00:12:29.279
Oh, now I feel relaxed and homely.

182
00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:36.879
Good good Elsbeth was around this afternoon, oh, feeding the

183
00:12:36.960 --> 00:12:40.559
big business manager, saying we were spending too much money.

184
00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:43.159
She's smarter than we are about things like that.

185
00:12:43.320 --> 00:12:46.120
Yes, but is she really putting you on a strict allowance?

186
00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:48.399
Well, I guess I'll have to go along with her.

187
00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:51.320
She says, I'm starting to spend more than I make. Now,

188
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:52.600
how is that possible?

189
00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:55.279
Maybe you need a new business manager.

190
00:12:55.559 --> 00:13:00.200
Oh, nobody would be better than else. Besides, she's got

191
00:13:00.200 --> 00:13:02.559
to make a living too, And who would I get?

192
00:13:02.679 --> 00:13:02.840
Well?

193
00:13:02.840 --> 00:13:03.320
How about me?

194
00:13:03.879 --> 00:13:07.600
Oh? Telling you you have no idea the value of money?

195
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:09.399
Well, I'm old and penniless.

196
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:12.080
And if, in his infinite mercy, the man upstairs saves

197
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:14.759
you from looking at me anymore and snatches you upstairs

198
00:13:14.799 --> 00:13:15.399
for himself.

199
00:13:16.039 --> 00:13:18.120
Else that tells me she'll be my guardian.

200
00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:21.279
Well, she does want me to make a new will.

201
00:13:22.120 --> 00:13:25.440
It wouldn't be a bad idea. We're both so stupid

202
00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:28.399
about how to handle what was God and if anything

203
00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:29.759
ever should happen to me.

204
00:13:29.840 --> 00:13:32.519
Oh, darling, please, I was only kidding. Let's get off this.

205
00:13:33.320 --> 00:13:35.480
No, as long as we got on it, I think

206
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:38.720
Elseberok had the right idea. She'd see you didn't throw

207
00:13:38.759 --> 00:13:43.080
it all away. So I agreed. I'm going to remake.

208
00:13:42.799 --> 00:13:43.720
My will on Monday.

209
00:13:44.559 --> 00:13:46.519
Now I've got to wash up, and you go tell

210
00:13:46.519 --> 00:13:48.360
the cook to get that dinner on the table.

211
00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:49.679
I am banished.

212
00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:56.519
Well that tears it Elsbeth family. One of you has

213
00:13:56.559 --> 00:13:57.000
got to go.

214
00:13:57.879 --> 00:14:02.600
Now, let's see we shall be Which can I get

215
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:03.120
away with?

216
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:12.399
Charming fellow Mark Stanton matinee Idol for a limited audience

217
00:14:12.480 --> 00:14:18.200
of aging women. His main role Romeo, although he has

218
00:14:18.279 --> 00:14:22.559
been seen with varying success critically as Orlando, Bassanio, Lysander,

219
00:14:22.759 --> 00:14:26.600
all Shakespearean lovers. Interesting casting when you think of it,

220
00:14:27.519 --> 00:14:30.759
or as we learn about him, he might have made

221
00:14:30.840 --> 00:14:34.440
a better Claudius, of whom his nephew Hamlet said that

222
00:14:34.559 --> 00:14:37.159
one may smile and smile again.

223
00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:38.039
And be a villain.

224
00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:52.720
I'll be back shortly with that too. In a famous

225
00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:57.360
epitaph on a child's grave reads, it is so soon

226
00:14:57.799 --> 00:15:01.320
that I am done for. I wonder what I was

227
00:15:01.399 --> 00:15:06.080
begun for. That might apply to this story of Emily's Stanton,

228
00:15:06.440 --> 00:15:09.000
or at least a plan that is forming in the

229
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:15.600
mind of her husband Mark. The problem with murder is

230
00:15:15.639 --> 00:15:18.879
not to want to commit it, but how how to

231
00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:22.080
commit it not be caught. One thing, I knew it

232
00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:25.039
would have to be out of the city, and fortunately

233
00:15:25.080 --> 00:15:28.840
we have a place up the Hudson Valley, suitably isolated.

234
00:15:29.799 --> 00:15:34.159
Also by sheer luck, Emily's picture was not shooting that weekend.

235
00:15:37.679 --> 00:15:40.080
Ooh, what time is it?

236
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:40.559
Mark?

237
00:15:41.919 --> 00:15:43.200
Mark?

238
00:15:44.080 --> 00:15:45.159
Did you call my lady?

239
00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:48.080
What on earth are you doing up at five day

240
00:15:48.120 --> 00:15:48.720
in the morning?

241
00:15:49.120 --> 00:15:52.440
Bringing the woman I adore beyond reason? Her orange juice

242
00:15:52.919 --> 00:15:54.080
and coffee is on the way.

243
00:15:54.519 --> 00:15:59.200
Oh angel, Thanks welcome. I'm so tired. I don't know

244
00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:00.919
how I'm going to make it the studio today.

245
00:16:01.039 --> 00:16:02.919
I'll call them and tell them you're not well.

246
00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:06.399
No, two more days and I have a whole long,

247
00:16:06.840 --> 00:16:09.679
three day weekend off. I'll bounce back then.

248
00:16:10.039 --> 00:16:13.039
Speaking about the weekend. How about going up to the country.

249
00:16:13.679 --> 00:16:16.519
No thanks, I want to just slump down here in

250
00:16:16.600 --> 00:16:19.559
bed and sleep and rest and hold in like a

251
00:16:19.559 --> 00:16:20.960
bear for his winter sleep.

252
00:16:21.080 --> 00:16:24.519
Oh but darling, it isn't winter. It's spring, and I

253
00:16:24.559 --> 00:16:27.639
want to get up to the house that long drive.

254
00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:29.320
You see, I'm worried.

255
00:16:29.399 --> 00:16:31.600
You know, I've got the whole dug in the fall.

256
00:16:31.639 --> 00:16:33.639
I've got to get that sump pump into the cellar

257
00:16:33.639 --> 00:16:35.279
before the spring waters flood is again.

258
00:16:35.519 --> 00:16:37.600
You can rest up there just as well.

259
00:16:37.600 --> 00:16:39.679
I can rest here, and we can get some men

260
00:16:39.759 --> 00:16:40.440
to do the job.

261
00:16:41.279 --> 00:16:43.240
Where were they last fall when we needed them.

262
00:16:43.840 --> 00:16:45.240
Can't we make it next weekend?

263
00:16:45.600 --> 00:16:50.960
Well it be too late by then. I'm afraid, all right, darling.

264
00:16:51.960 --> 00:16:55.440
I never can refuse you anything. Everything I do is

265
00:16:55.480 --> 00:17:01.480
for you. Have is hearous said for letting your Oh

266
00:17:01.519 --> 00:17:05.359
that's just money, because neither of us know how to handle.

267
00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:08.920
What's it for except to buy things? Well we can

268
00:17:09.039 --> 00:17:09.640
enjoy them.

269
00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:12.400
I mean, I feel like a fool having to run

270
00:17:12.440 --> 00:17:14.319
to elspit for the rent or something.

271
00:17:14.599 --> 00:17:15.839
Are you trying to get rid of me?

272
00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:18.759
Well, of course not, darling. How could you think a

273
00:17:18.799 --> 00:17:19.440
thing like that?

274
00:17:20.119 --> 00:17:23.799
I don't, so stop talking about it. You don't have

275
00:17:23.880 --> 00:17:26.200
to do that. If I was dead, and I don't

276
00:17:26.279 --> 00:17:26.920
intend to.

277
00:17:26.880 --> 00:17:28.359
Be, I should hope not.

278
00:17:29.480 --> 00:17:31.720
Look at the time, I've got his shower and dress

279
00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:32.440
and get out of here.

280
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:33.119
How about lunch?

281
00:17:33.240 --> 00:17:42.559
I can't, Sweetie, I have a business appointments shower. I'm

282
00:17:42.599 --> 00:17:45.039
long on the two or later. I wondered why I

283
00:17:45.079 --> 00:17:48.960
hadn't tell Mark my lunch was with elsewuss. Then I

284
00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:52.319
decided it was better than I hadn't, And I wished

285
00:17:52.359 --> 00:17:54.880
I hadn't agreed to dragging up to the country house.

286
00:17:56.599 --> 00:17:59.960
But he's really so beautiful and so sexy and so persuaded.

287
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.519
If it's also hard to refuse Mark anything. If I'd

288
00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:07.200
only known, I'd picked the wrong thing to ever refuse,

289
00:18:07.960 --> 00:18:10.359
I'd never let else with talk me into what she

290
00:18:10.599 --> 00:18:15.000
called having more backbone. Emily, you can't get into everything

291
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:16.160
Mark wants or asks.

292
00:18:16.240 --> 00:18:17.400
He's a selfish child.

293
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:18.400
That isn't true.

294
00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:20.759
Else look, honey, take it from me. I found out

295
00:18:20.759 --> 00:18:24.240
the hard way. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring all.

296
00:18:24.119 --> 00:18:24.680
That up again.

297
00:18:24.839 --> 00:18:25.440
I forget it.

298
00:18:25.480 --> 00:18:28.079
I'd forgotten Mark that way. Plaid us two side by

299
00:18:28.119 --> 00:18:30.079
side and ask any man to choose which way would

300
00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:32.599
it go. Well, I never have come back from the

301
00:18:32.599 --> 00:18:34.319
coast a year ago if I'd known I was going

302
00:18:34.359 --> 00:18:37.440
to bust up a romance between Emily. We've been over

303
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:40.119
this ground before. You didn't bust up the romance. There

304
00:18:40.200 --> 00:18:43.000
wasn't any to bust up except on my side. That

305
00:18:43.160 --> 00:18:45.480
Mark needed a good agent, and he got me in

306
00:18:45.759 --> 00:18:49.640
more ways than one. So beneath period, I'm still sorry.

307
00:18:49.640 --> 00:18:50.119
It hurts.

308
00:18:50.559 --> 00:18:51.960
I wish I could make up for it.

309
00:18:52.160 --> 00:18:54.599
Well, you can two ways.

310
00:18:55.160 --> 00:18:57.920
Draw that will making me executricks of your estate and

311
00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:02.559
let me budget your dope seems unfair to Mark. Listen, Emily,

312
00:19:03.000 --> 00:19:04.720
I don't want you to get your back up, but

313
00:19:04.839 --> 00:19:06.920
I get the word. He has gambling debts, and if

314
00:19:06.960 --> 00:19:07.480
he thinks.

315
00:19:07.240 --> 00:19:09.039
He has backing, he could go sky high.

316
00:19:09.480 --> 00:19:12.519
Now, just let me put the brakes on. Okay. I

317
00:19:12.599 --> 00:19:16.559
suppose it's too much to hope that your love for

318
00:19:16.640 --> 00:19:19.839
that muscle bound Greek statue you're married isn't letting up

319
00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:25.519
any Mark. What would make you think a thing like that, Oh,

320
00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:28.440
I don't know, just an irrational hope.

321
00:19:28.519 --> 00:19:31.319
I guess you still love him, don't you.

322
00:19:32.319 --> 00:19:35.720
That isn't the point. I love you, and I'm very

323
00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:36.880
concerned about you.

324
00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:37.720
What do you mean.

325
00:19:38.480 --> 00:19:40.440
I don't know. You'd only laugh at me if I

326
00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:45.920
told you. It's really funny, isn't it. I mean the genes.

327
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:49.440
We both come from the same mother, but our fathers

328
00:19:49.480 --> 00:19:57.480
were so different. You blonde, blue eyed, open, uncomplicated, trusting,

329
00:19:58.920 --> 00:20:05.799
and me dark, brooding, sharp tongued. Much of this world and.

330
00:20:07.319 --> 00:20:07.599
Yet not.

331
00:20:08.440 --> 00:20:12.640
Now what does that mean? I could never explain that

332
00:20:12.640 --> 00:20:18.119
to you in a millennium. But I am a psychicist.

333
00:20:18.680 --> 00:20:21.200
You mean, like there's funny cards you used to read

334
00:20:21.279 --> 00:20:24.359
and for telling what's going to happen, and things like that. Yes,

335
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:28.400
things like that happen. Emily, listened to me, this is

336
00:20:28.440 --> 00:20:32.480
a dangerous time for you. Be careful, Just be very careful.

337
00:20:32.559 --> 00:20:34.400
But I don't know what you mean. I can only

338
00:20:34.440 --> 00:20:37.079
see so far. I can only warn you. Just be

339
00:20:37.359 --> 00:20:40.680
very careful. Now you are scary, I mean to well,

340
00:20:41.920 --> 00:20:44.440
it is known to you. It's just that I have

341
00:20:44.519 --> 00:20:48.279
the weekend off and mirk and I was under the country. Ella,

342
00:20:48.440 --> 00:20:52.079
I really don't want to I'm scared of the drive.

343
00:20:52.640 --> 00:20:55.160
Do you mean because of mom and your father?

344
00:20:55.480 --> 00:20:55.799
Yes?

345
00:20:56.359 --> 00:20:58.759
Emily, how many times have I told you it wasn't

346
00:20:58.799 --> 00:20:59.319
your fault?

347
00:21:00.200 --> 00:21:02.240
Cards, I was driving when.

348
00:21:02.119 --> 00:21:05.400
They were killed and a drunken madman by fatal chance

349
00:21:05.480 --> 00:21:07.440
jumped the road divider and forced you off the road.

350
00:21:07.480 --> 00:21:08.559
What else could you have done?

351
00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:11.839
It was not your fault, I know, but I still

352
00:21:11.880 --> 00:21:14.599
have nightmares about it. You're not going to drive, are you.

353
00:21:15.200 --> 00:21:19.759
I'll never drive a car again. It's just I'm afraid

354
00:21:19.799 --> 00:21:20.720
even to get into one.

355
00:21:21.240 --> 00:21:21.440
Now.

356
00:21:21.559 --> 00:21:23.680
Excuse me for changing the subject, but you have to

357
00:21:23.680 --> 00:21:25.799
get back to the set soon. I want you to

358
00:21:25.839 --> 00:21:28.559
take a quick run up to my office. What Harry

359
00:21:28.640 --> 00:21:30.519
is there now? I had him drop and you will

360
00:21:30.599 --> 00:21:32.559
for you, and I think we ought to get it

361
00:21:32.599 --> 00:21:36.720
signed right away. Well, I don't know. Marcus sort of

362
00:21:36.960 --> 00:21:41.799
hurt Emily. If anything ever happens to you, I will

363
00:21:41.839 --> 00:21:45.240
take care of him the way he should be. You

364
00:21:45.319 --> 00:21:46.559
know you can trust me.

365
00:21:46.559 --> 00:21:55.519
For that, Emily. Yes, oh, you had your eyes closed.

366
00:21:55.559 --> 00:21:56.440
I thought you were asleep.

367
00:21:56.839 --> 00:21:58.480
That's not why my eyes were close.

368
00:21:58.680 --> 00:22:01.359
Ah, darling, come on, we've got to put things behind us.

369
00:22:01.880 --> 00:22:05.559
I try, it's just in the first lane.

370
00:22:06.000 --> 00:22:07.160
It's late. I want to get us home.

371
00:22:08.799 --> 00:22:10.400
Never traveled in this thing, all right.

372
00:22:10.319 --> 00:22:12.359
All right, I'm sorry. I'll cut right into the next

373
00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:14.160
nighte as soon as the car behind me passes.

374
00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:17.759
Now, Please, sweetheart, I want you to relax, Just forget

375
00:22:17.799 --> 00:22:18.960
everything this weekend.

376
00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:25.279
Just play possible, Play possible.

377
00:22:26.200 --> 00:22:28.920
Would I have the nerve to do it? And beyond that,

378
00:22:29.240 --> 00:22:32.480
could I really find the howl? As the hum of

379
00:22:32.519 --> 00:22:36.119
the car soothed both of us, and Emily appeared really

380
00:22:36.200 --> 00:22:39.079
to drop off to sleep, other things came to my mind.

381
00:22:40.200 --> 00:22:44.279
That damn cellar flooding every spring, when the surface water

382
00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:46.720
on frozen coming down the hill defeated.

383
00:22:46.359 --> 00:22:49.720
Every trick we'd tried to keep it out. The sump

384
00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:51.079
pump was the only answer.

385
00:22:52.680 --> 00:22:58.000
Then, suddenly, at that moment, although it turned my stomach,

386
00:22:59.039 --> 00:23:10.400
there was the answer to my bigger problem.

387
00:23:10.480 --> 00:23:14.680
Else best you are very early. I know the Covin

388
00:23:14.759 --> 00:23:19.160
does not meet until midnight. I had to come. I

389
00:23:19.200 --> 00:23:25.240
need a special reading. I have intimations of disaster. You

390
00:23:25.319 --> 00:23:29.559
remember all that one of my gifts is total recall.

391
00:23:29.920 --> 00:23:33.440
The last question I asked turned up the Nine of Swords.

392
00:23:34.160 --> 00:23:37.359
I asked about my sister. Oh, now I want to

393
00:23:37.359 --> 00:23:39.079
know how.

394
00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:43.960
Soon when that is not always divulged.

395
00:23:45.039 --> 00:23:48.319
But let us tell the gods and find out if

396
00:23:48.319 --> 00:23:55.519
we can. If you want, if I want, Remember, there

397
00:23:55.559 --> 00:23:58.440
is no way of stopping what has been decreed?

398
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:03.880
Has there been a good weekend?

399
00:24:03.960 --> 00:24:04.240
Darling?

400
00:24:04.400 --> 00:24:04.680
Oh?

401
00:24:04.799 --> 00:24:08.000
Yes, I feel so rested, so relaxed.

402
00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:08.240
Good.

403
00:24:08.799 --> 00:24:12.240
Maybe it's just as well I came. Did you get everything.

404
00:24:11.920 --> 00:24:12.920
Down in the cell you want?

405
00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:13.200
Well?

406
00:24:13.319 --> 00:24:15.960
Yes, I had to do some more digging make the

407
00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:18.480
whole larger, but I have plenty of cement to finish

408
00:24:18.559 --> 00:24:19.160
up tomorrow.

409
00:24:19.440 --> 00:24:21.680
Tomorrow, that's Monday, right.

410
00:24:22.359 --> 00:24:24.119
I thought you could drive down tonight.

411
00:24:24.839 --> 00:24:27.000
You know I won't think of ever driving again.

412
00:24:27.079 --> 00:24:29.039
All right, darling, All right, I'll drive you in the

413
00:24:29.079 --> 00:24:31.720
morning and then drive back up. Now, come on, sweetie,

414
00:24:31.759 --> 00:24:34.240
I've taken off the phone so we won't be disturbed,

415
00:24:34.880 --> 00:24:37.000
and I'm going to carry you up to bed and

416
00:24:37.200 --> 00:24:40.039
tuck you in for the best sleep you've ever had

417
00:24:40.079 --> 00:24:42.000
in your life.

418
00:24:45.240 --> 00:24:48.119
I was so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open,

419
00:24:49.279 --> 00:24:54.279
but some inner, alone, some nonsense voice, kept jogging at

420
00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:57.519
me to stay awake, until I thought, it's so many

421
00:24:57.519 --> 00:25:02.640
attention foolish to me. Afraid I am in my beloved

422
00:25:02.720 --> 00:25:09.880
husband's arms, And how safe can I be? Is she

423
00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:10.839
still in danger?

424
00:25:11.359 --> 00:25:13.720
Benign of swords, still cluttons?

425
00:25:14.279 --> 00:25:15.640
But when? How soon?

426
00:25:16.279 --> 00:25:18.079
I cannot tell her from the cards?

427
00:25:18.599 --> 00:25:22.440
Maybe maybe I should call the country. Yeah, I use

428
00:25:22.480 --> 00:25:24.039
your phone. Of course.

429
00:25:27.160 --> 00:25:29.880
What danger can she be in with her husband?

430
00:25:30.359 --> 00:25:34.440
It's a very long drive. I know what those roads

431
00:25:34.440 --> 00:25:44.680
are like. Oh damn, what head do they signal? At

432
00:25:44.720 --> 00:25:46.359
least it means they got there safely?

433
00:25:47.720 --> 00:25:50.000
Still wait for the mass tonight.

434
00:25:50.920 --> 00:25:54.920
Within this circle, more questions are answered than through the cards.

435
00:25:55.599 --> 00:26:01.559
Be patient, I'll try, but I can steal Jack in

436
00:26:01.640 --> 00:26:03.960
my bones.

437
00:26:05.240 --> 00:26:07.440
Yes, you must die.

438
00:26:08.440 --> 00:26:11.400
Put out the light, and then put out the light

439
00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:18.839
if I can quench me? No, no more.

440
00:26:19.000 --> 00:26:28.839
Moving still as the grave, My wife, My wife.

441
00:26:33.519 --> 00:26:36.799
I must have been mad emily to have killed you,

442
00:26:38.240 --> 00:26:41.920
because I do love you, only that I love myself

443
00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:45.839
more for money, for the need of it.

444
00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:47.880
What have I done?

445
00:26:49.359 --> 00:26:50.400
How do I cover it?

446
00:26:51.640 --> 00:26:52.240
Of course?

447
00:26:53.200 --> 00:27:00.400
The car an accident, an accident with a car river

448
00:27:00.720 --> 00:27:03.640
at the devil's elbow. But the body must never be recovered.

449
00:27:04.359 --> 00:27:08.599
Then who could prove anything? The grave is already made.

450
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:11.319
Can I get away with it?

451
00:27:13.119 --> 00:27:18.119
Of course I can. I can get away with anything.

452
00:27:21.759 --> 00:27:28.720
No what you interrupt the mass? But death has occurred,

453
00:27:29.720 --> 00:27:31.519
the death you prophesied.

454
00:27:32.359 --> 00:27:33.000
I must leave.

455
00:27:33.160 --> 00:27:34.920
Give me a permission to leave the magic circle.

456
00:27:35.200 --> 00:27:40.559
If the death is accomplished, What can you do but go.

457
00:27:41.119 --> 00:27:42.160
If you must.

458
00:27:46.200 --> 00:27:49.319
Now try it again, operator, or get me someone who

459
00:27:49.400 --> 00:27:52.160
can make the connection if it's out of order. This

460
00:27:52.319 --> 00:27:53.640
is a matter of life and death.

461
00:28:00.079 --> 00:28:03.039
Shame to waste of car I love. On such a

462
00:28:03.119 --> 00:28:10.240
night Troilus climbed the Athenian walls. Madness, The whole thing

463
00:28:10.279 --> 00:28:13.480
is madness. There has to be a reason for Emily's death.

464
00:28:14.640 --> 00:28:18.079
The car smashing through the guard rail five hundred.

465
00:28:17.839 --> 00:28:18.839
Feet to the river below.

466
00:28:18.920 --> 00:28:22.119
The car recovered the body never I will bury that

467
00:28:23.200 --> 00:28:28.720
five fathoms deep and watching anyone question that Emily's body

468
00:28:28.759 --> 00:28:31.400
lies cemented in the well of a new sump pump

469
00:28:31.480 --> 00:28:39.319
plant over a year ago. So goodbye, my favorite car.

470
00:28:49.839 --> 00:28:51.160
The dye is cast.

471
00:28:52.119 --> 00:28:58.759
The adversaries established, a murderer and a witch by whom

472
00:28:58.960 --> 00:29:00.640
is justice served?

473
00:29:01.559 --> 00:29:03.960
Which will prevail if.

474
00:29:03.880 --> 00:29:07.440
A woman has loved not wisely but too well. Who

475
00:29:07.480 --> 00:29:11.440
can best revenge her the majesty and justice of the law,

476
00:29:12.400 --> 00:29:15.759
or a kangaroo court beyond and outside the law.

477
00:29:16.559 --> 00:29:18.200
I'll return shortly with that.

478
00:29:18.400 --> 00:29:28.799
Three.

479
00:29:29.720 --> 00:29:34.480
Mark Stanton has deliberately murdered his wife, and he has

480
00:29:34.519 --> 00:29:37.559
had what seems to him a very practical means of

481
00:29:37.599 --> 00:29:43.000
disposing of body and suspicion, which may work for normal authority,

482
00:29:43.119 --> 00:29:46.839
but possibly not for his sister in law, since he

483
00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:50.960
has no idea that she is a modern witch. For

484
00:29:51.119 --> 00:29:57.039
the moment, he is involved with simple but furiously necessary occupations.

485
00:30:02.200 --> 00:30:06.759
That looks pretty good, pomp, and it's well cellar floor replaced?

486
00:30:07.559 --> 00:30:10.359
Who'd ever find Emily or think to look for a here?

487
00:30:12.519 --> 00:30:17.119
What the devil? Three am in the morning? Who damn

488
00:30:17.880 --> 00:30:21.960
light's thrown upstairs? I had better answer? Gotta change first.

489
00:30:26.839 --> 00:30:30.640
It's all about time. I always seem to be surprising

490
00:30:30.680 --> 00:30:32.039
you in aunt, Sabu.

491
00:30:32.759 --> 00:30:34.319
What do you expect at this time of night?

492
00:30:34.319 --> 00:30:36.839
All right, come in, it's about the first polite thing

493
00:30:36.880 --> 00:30:37.440
you've said to me.

494
00:30:37.799 --> 00:30:40.200
Oh, let's cut the funny talk. What are you doing

495
00:30:40.279 --> 00:30:41.440
up here in the middle of the morning?

496
00:30:41.720 --> 00:30:44.240
An interesting phrase? Shouldn't it be the middle of the night?

497
00:30:44.359 --> 00:30:44.799
All right?

498
00:30:44.799 --> 00:30:47.119
All right, let's bury the New York smart talk. What

499
00:30:47.160 --> 00:30:48.839
do you want to see my sister?

500
00:30:49.319 --> 00:30:50.359
She isn't here?

501
00:30:51.680 --> 00:30:52.519
Oh why not?

502
00:30:54.079 --> 00:30:57.200
She had a five o'clock call on location for sunrise shots,

503
00:30:57.680 --> 00:30:59.720
so she decided to drive back last night and had

504
00:30:59.759 --> 00:31:01.880
the limit scene take her on location this morning. What

505
00:31:02.039 --> 00:31:03.960
made you take a two hour drive on here at

506
00:31:03.960 --> 00:31:04.680
this time of night.

507
00:31:05.759 --> 00:31:07.000
I'll tell you half of it.

508
00:31:08.039 --> 00:31:09.960
I was scared. If that means anything.

509
00:31:09.680 --> 00:31:12.160
To you, girl, it doesn't. What's the other half?

510
00:31:12.880 --> 00:31:15.960
I won't tell you that yet, although some day you

511
00:31:16.039 --> 00:31:16.960
just might have to learn.

512
00:31:17.119 --> 00:31:24.519
I won't even pretend to understand that. Oh excuse me? Yes, yes,

513
00:31:24.519 --> 00:31:26.119
that's right, I'm Mark Stanton.

514
00:31:27.759 --> 00:31:29.519
What where?

515
00:31:31.039 --> 00:31:31.240
No?

516
00:31:31.240 --> 00:31:32.119
No, never mind all that?

517
00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:32.599
How is she?

518
00:31:34.599 --> 00:31:34.680
No?

519
00:31:34.799 --> 00:31:37.359
I'll be right down there. What was that?

520
00:31:37.400 --> 00:31:37.759
Emily?

521
00:31:38.400 --> 00:31:41.079
Her car went out of control at the Devil's elve No,

522
00:31:41.279 --> 00:31:43.440
she went through the guard rail, plunged five hundred feet

523
00:31:43.480 --> 00:31:44.160
down unto the river.

524
00:31:44.680 --> 00:31:46.079
The car's a total never.

525
00:31:46.000 --> 00:31:47.440
Mind the car? What about Emily?

526
00:31:48.359 --> 00:31:50.799
Whether I haven't found her yet? The car windows were opening.

527
00:31:51.160 --> 00:31:53.319
If she got swept down the river and into the lake,

528
00:31:53.359 --> 00:31:54.279
they may never find her.

529
00:31:55.680 --> 00:31:56.319
You mean.

530
00:31:57.920 --> 00:31:58.519
She's dead?

531
00:32:00.079 --> 00:32:00.559
You don't know.

532
00:32:02.279 --> 00:32:05.599
What else a plunge like that, but the car totaled?

533
00:32:05.599 --> 00:32:06.559
What else is there to think?

534
00:32:07.400 --> 00:32:07.759
Nothing?

535
00:32:09.440 --> 00:32:10.960
Emily is dead? What?

536
00:32:12.599 --> 00:32:17.319
That's a strange way to oh else? But I'm sorry.

537
00:32:18.640 --> 00:32:20.400
This must be terrible for you too.

538
00:32:21.240 --> 00:32:25.000
It is terrible for me, but not too.

539
00:32:25.400 --> 00:32:26.839
Huh What does that mean?

540
00:32:28.200 --> 00:32:30.279
I mean you killed her? How could you.

541
00:32:31.960 --> 00:32:32.960
Think a thing like that?

542
00:32:33.119 --> 00:32:37.319
I don't think I know, but it isn't going to

543
00:32:37.359 --> 00:32:40.000
do you any good. Hit worth all for nothing.

544
00:32:40.119 --> 00:32:40.839
I don't know what you mean.

545
00:32:40.920 --> 00:32:44.839
You will when I'm ready to tell you. Right now,

546
00:32:44.920 --> 00:32:48.440
let's go to the scene of the what should we

547
00:32:48.440 --> 00:32:53.279
call it, mark, let's just say the tragedy.

548
00:32:56.440 --> 00:32:59.359
Okay, well, here's the crow virus. Get those doors open.

549
00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:01.440
On the inside, tech neglicure.

550
00:33:01.480 --> 00:33:08.480
K oh uh, mister Stanton, Yes, yes, that's right.

551
00:33:09.079 --> 00:33:16.640
I uh, I am sorry about this.

552
00:33:17.680 --> 00:33:18.119
My wife?

553
00:33:18.200 --> 00:33:20.440
You do you think she's dead?

554
00:33:21.599 --> 00:33:22.279
What can I say?

555
00:33:23.440 --> 00:33:29.799
Fall like that? And then and and what? Well?

556
00:33:29.839 --> 00:33:33.000
Man, this here shoe one of my men found its

557
00:33:33.039 --> 00:33:35.839
mate washed ashore just before the river emptied into like

558
00:33:35.880 --> 00:33:38.799
a hawkawa. Right down here with the car landed in

559
00:33:38.839 --> 00:33:43.839
the river, we found your sister's pocket book. It don't

560
00:33:43.839 --> 00:33:44.240
look good.

561
00:33:45.319 --> 00:33:47.720
Can her body be recovered from the night.

562
00:33:48.039 --> 00:33:50.759
We'll try. But that lake bottom is soft mud or

563
00:33:50.759 --> 00:33:52.519
whatever you want to call it. From all the leaves,

564
00:33:52.519 --> 00:33:55.319
the trees have been dropping for millions of years. It's

565
00:33:55.359 --> 00:33:59.240
like like a quicksand nobody you ever drowned in that

566
00:33:59.359 --> 00:34:03.839
lake ever was scene again? Oh my god, look on't

567
00:34:03.880 --> 00:34:06.559
you go on home, mister Stanton and take take your

568
00:34:06.559 --> 00:34:09.119
sister in law with you. As soon as I'm finished

569
00:34:09.199 --> 00:34:12.400
up here, I'll drive up. There are some questions I'll

570
00:34:12.440 --> 00:34:13.000
have to ask.

571
00:34:18.000 --> 00:34:20.639
What do you mean was Emily exceptionally tall?

572
00:34:21.159 --> 00:34:22.320
Well for a woman I met?

573
00:34:22.679 --> 00:34:26.639
Actually, my sister was quite small, two inches shorter than

574
00:34:26.679 --> 00:34:28.880
I am, and I'm only five four.

575
00:34:28.960 --> 00:34:32.599
Well, right, yes, Emily was quite tiny. But what difference

576
00:34:32.639 --> 00:34:33.239
does that make?

577
00:34:33.920 --> 00:34:37.920
The driver's seat was adjusted for somebody as tall as well,

578
00:34:37.960 --> 00:34:38.719
say you, sir?

579
00:34:38.840 --> 00:34:43.440
Oh, well, it could have been knocked back in the crash, couldn't.

580
00:34:43.079 --> 00:34:45.320
It, Yes, sir, it could?

581
00:34:47.119 --> 00:34:52.280
Uh were you're white wearing gloves when she left gloves?

582
00:34:52.719 --> 00:34:52.960
Why?

583
00:34:54.039 --> 00:34:55.760
Drivers will had no fingerprints on it?

584
00:34:56.840 --> 00:34:59.000
I just wondering, Oh, yes, yes, now I remember, yes,

585
00:34:59.320 --> 00:35:01.159
I think, yes, yes, she did have gloves.

586
00:35:01.880 --> 00:35:04.480
You drive with gloves, Missus Stanton, Yes, yes.

587
00:35:04.360 --> 00:35:08.360
Usually in the car is on constant maintenance at the garage.

588
00:35:08.599 --> 00:35:13.519
Yes, sir, Just one more question for now. Were you

589
00:35:13.599 --> 00:35:15.280
all own the house and the accident happened?

590
00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:17.199
Well, I suppose I must have been.

591
00:35:17.800 --> 00:35:20.000
Well, I was just wondering if your sister in law

592
00:35:20.119 --> 00:35:22.119
was also here.

593
00:35:21.440 --> 00:35:26.639
I arrived shortly before Emily left. I had planned a

594
00:35:26.719 --> 00:35:29.360
driver into town this morning. We had some business to discuss.

595
00:35:29.400 --> 00:35:32.559
But when she insisted on leaving last night, I was

596
00:35:32.719 --> 00:35:35.719
just too tired to make the trip, and I had

597
00:35:35.800 --> 00:35:40.079
brought Mark and his script. Since Emily was taking Mark's car,

598
00:35:40.119 --> 00:35:42.360
I decided to stay, let him read the script and

599
00:35:42.400 --> 00:35:45.480
we could drive in tomorrow discussing it and return.

600
00:35:45.159 --> 00:35:45.719
It one time.

601
00:35:46.360 --> 00:35:49.039
Well, I guess they'll close these things up for me.

602
00:35:49.920 --> 00:35:54.480
Sorry it taking so much time. My condolence is mister Stanton,

603
00:35:54.840 --> 00:36:02.039
I hope we can find your wife.

604
00:36:02.840 --> 00:36:06.480
She is just as certain of it as I am.

605
00:36:06.679 --> 00:36:07.679
You murdered Emily.

606
00:36:08.320 --> 00:36:10.400
What are you saying the truth?

607
00:36:11.599 --> 00:36:12.480
If you believe that?

608
00:36:13.320 --> 00:36:14.239
Why did you alibi?

609
00:36:14.440 --> 00:36:19.079
I wanted to spite the surgeon's suspicions, at least temporarily.

610
00:36:19.760 --> 00:36:20.559
What are you up to.

611
00:36:23.480 --> 00:36:24.199
At the moment?

612
00:36:24.840 --> 00:36:25.559
Not very much.

613
00:36:27.039 --> 00:36:30.239
I want to sleep on all of this. Oh, by

614
00:36:30.320 --> 00:36:33.920
the way, don't entertain any ideas of getting rid of me,

615
00:36:35.480 --> 00:36:37.679
you see, brother in law, Dear, I happen to be

616
00:36:38.079 --> 00:36:43.760
exactly what you think of me, a witch, only I

617
00:36:43.840 --> 00:36:46.079
am a real one.

618
00:36:46.519 --> 00:36:47.480
And because I.

619
00:36:47.440 --> 00:36:51.199
Am what I am, I can feel her presence in

620
00:36:51.280 --> 00:36:55.280
this house. If I told the police what I know,

621
00:36:55.360 --> 00:36:57.199
they'd search it from top to.

622
00:36:57.159 --> 00:37:00.800
Bottom because of someone who claims to have yes that'd

623
00:37:00.840 --> 00:37:03.079
write you off with a nuts Mark, you.

624
00:37:03.199 --> 00:37:07.480
Haven't a leg to stand on. On Wednesday. Last Wednesday,

625
00:37:07.480 --> 00:37:10.039
when we had lunch, I arranged for Emily to change

626
00:37:10.039 --> 00:37:13.840
her will. It was finalized before you drove up here Friday.

627
00:37:14.239 --> 00:37:21.760
I am executric and control everybody. Oh, I'm too tired

628
00:37:21.800 --> 00:37:25.639
to talk about it now. After I slept on it

629
00:37:26.679 --> 00:37:31.440
outside your future, I suggest you get some rest to

630
00:37:31.480 --> 00:37:32.360
prepare for it.

631
00:37:36.280 --> 00:37:38.559
I wouldn't have better, plug Nickel, I could get any

632
00:37:38.639 --> 00:37:41.440
sleep out of what was left of the night, but

633
00:37:41.599 --> 00:37:45.039
a bottle of brandy and sheer emotionally exhaustion from fright

634
00:37:45.480 --> 00:37:46.679
put me to sleep.

635
00:37:46.400 --> 00:37:47.480
In the library chair.

636
00:37:48.760 --> 00:37:51.480
The last thing I remember was a whirling confusion of

637
00:37:51.519 --> 00:37:55.320
surrealistic plots for disposing of Elspits.

638
00:37:55.480 --> 00:37:58.480
I even finally believed what I'd always thought of her,

639
00:37:59.480 --> 00:38:01.920
that she was a witch.

640
00:38:05.599 --> 00:38:09.360
I was sick with grief and desperately tired, but I

641
00:38:09.400 --> 00:38:13.119
couldn't go to sleep. Every time my eyes closed, I

642
00:38:13.119 --> 00:38:17.760
seemed to hear as I couldn't stand it any longer.

643
00:38:18.599 --> 00:38:23.320
I got up, went downstairs. I saw Mark passed out

644
00:38:23.320 --> 00:38:25.480
in the life Gary, a brandy bottle in her hand,

645
00:38:26.119 --> 00:38:31.159
and the voice was closer. The voice threw me to

646
00:38:31.239 --> 00:38:37.440
the cellar, and there besides the furnace, I knew it

647
00:38:37.480 --> 00:38:44.679
at least the fresh cement still drying, beautifully blended and

648
00:38:44.760 --> 00:38:46.559
tapered into the old surface.

649
00:38:48.639 --> 00:38:50.840
Now I knew where my sister was.

650
00:38:52.800 --> 00:38:54.880
Now I knew exactly what I had to do.

651
00:38:58.880 --> 00:39:04.000
And I'll pronounce you elsewisz Greik with Moore and you,

652
00:39:04.360 --> 00:39:11.599
Mark Blaine Stanton, man and wife, you may kiss the bride.

653
00:39:14.760 --> 00:39:19.840
Ah home, sweet home, So you got me at last.

654
00:39:19.880 --> 00:39:25.079
Else But that's right, Mark, my dear husband, and no

655
00:39:25.239 --> 00:39:28.719
way out for you. One word from me and Sergeant

656
00:39:28.800 --> 00:39:31.079
Harkness would dig up that cellar and you'd spend the

657
00:39:31.079 --> 00:39:33.159
best part of your life in jail for murder.

658
00:39:33.280 --> 00:39:37.079
I'm grateful to you, of course, but some things I

659
00:39:37.239 --> 00:39:38.239
still don't understand.

660
00:39:38.440 --> 00:39:43.320
Oh you will, happy, darling. Just give your bride a

661
00:39:43.360 --> 00:39:46.320
few minutes to slip into something fetching and we'll start

662
00:39:46.360 --> 00:39:52.320
to begin our married life. I promise you'll finally all

663
00:39:52.400 --> 00:39:56.360
I told you, I really am be witching.

664
00:40:00.480 --> 00:40:02.960
I damned her under my breath what she claimed to be.

665
00:40:03.960 --> 00:40:05.840
I found a longing ache for Emily, and what she

666
00:40:06.000 --> 00:40:09.920
into me. I seized at being emasculated, at having to

667
00:40:09.960 --> 00:40:12.599
act like a pet poodle, at the hopelessness of my situation.

668
00:40:13.639 --> 00:40:17.880
I dreamed of the thousandth plot to get rid of Elspeth. Oh,

669
00:40:18.519 --> 00:40:22.599
an idle dream I'd gotten away with it once, never again.

670
00:40:24.079 --> 00:40:27.639
And then she called me into the bedroom.

671
00:40:28.719 --> 00:40:30.239
Come love her boy?

672
00:40:30.880 --> 00:40:38.960
Oh lord, No, you didn't really believe I was a witch?

673
00:40:39.000 --> 00:40:39.679
Did you go?

674
00:40:40.280 --> 00:40:47.280
You're Emily? I followed her aspect. Does it please you? Yes?

675
00:40:47.360 --> 00:40:53.559
I love you. I want you, Oh, emilylove.

676
00:40:53.719 --> 00:40:57.800
That's mark, not Emily, only her aspect, which you will

677
00:40:57.840 --> 00:41:02.599
live with every moment where at home. Oh, but you

678
00:41:02.719 --> 00:41:07.159
will not touch me, either as myself or my sister

679
00:41:07.280 --> 00:41:07.760
you killed.

680
00:41:07.880 --> 00:41:10.039
I don't understand.

681
00:41:10.159 --> 00:41:12.000
I want to be sure you can't get away with it.

682
00:41:13.000 --> 00:41:16.280
A good lawyer, your own natural charm, a long bitter trial,

683
00:41:16.360 --> 00:41:19.639
the possibility of escape, and even if they found you guilty,

684
00:41:19.679 --> 00:41:23.519
there is no death penalty. So my way is better.

685
00:41:25.280 --> 00:41:30.159
No money, no freedom, and the remembrance every day of

686
00:41:30.239 --> 00:41:33.320
the crime you committed, the girl you murdered, to haunt you,

687
00:41:33.400 --> 00:41:38.039
fresh and lovely while you grow old and forgotten. This

688
00:41:38.199 --> 00:41:43.199
is yourself mark, flush lined, perhaps, but more confining than

689
00:41:43.239 --> 00:41:47.800
anything state or government could devise. And I am your jailor,

690
00:41:49.400 --> 00:41:53.000
watching you die a little day by day, year by year.

691
00:41:54.800 --> 00:41:58.760
I've read it in your cards, traced it in your horoscope.

692
00:41:59.000 --> 00:42:01.360
You will have a law hell on earth before the

693
00:42:01.440 --> 00:42:06.039
spirit I worship welcomes you to the real Hell Fraternity.

694
00:42:08.199 --> 00:42:10.280
This is my revenge for my sister.

695
00:42:11.639 --> 00:42:12.559
And for myself.

696
00:42:17.960 --> 00:42:21.039
As it was in the beginning, so it is now

697
00:42:21.119 --> 00:42:26.199
and ever shall be heaven. Hath no rage like love

698
00:42:26.639 --> 00:42:32.559
to hate returned, nor hell no fury like a woman scorned.

699
00:42:33.840 --> 00:42:36.039
For this story, there is no ending.

700
00:42:36.960 --> 00:42:41.159
A man bought only what he deserved. I'll be back shortly.

701
00:42:51.960 --> 00:42:55.519
For a while, Mark Stanton's matinee ladies wondered about his

702
00:42:55.599 --> 00:43:00.199
abrupt retirement, but the gorgon who guarded him fiercely. They

703
00:43:00.519 --> 00:43:06.679
finally discouraged their attentions. Not Elspeth alone, his good looks

704
00:43:06.760 --> 00:43:10.280
began to fade strangely, till by the time he was

705
00:43:10.360 --> 00:43:15.599
thirty five, his haunted, gaunt face and emaciated body looked

706
00:43:15.639 --> 00:43:18.960
more like a man in his seventies. He eventually was

707
00:43:18.960 --> 00:43:22.440
committed to a state institution for the insane, and died

708
00:43:22.519 --> 00:43:27.239
there without even an obituary to mark his passing mysteriously

709
00:43:27.440 --> 00:43:33.079
and suddenly. Elspeth died on the same day. Our cast

710
00:43:33.159 --> 00:43:37.360
included William Redfield, Patricia Wheel, Terry Keane and Ken Harvey.

711
00:43:37.920 --> 00:43:41.239
The entire production was under the direction of Hymon Brown.

712
00:43:43.159 --> 00:43:43.679
Is E. G.

713
00:43:43.880 --> 00:43:46.880
Marshall inviting you to return to O Mystery Theater for

714
00:43:47.000 --> 00:43:53.920
another adventure in the macabre until next time, pleasant dreams.

715
00:44:35.320 --> 00:44:41.400
Well, my dear, I hope you're sufficiently chilled, but not

716
00:44:41.679 --> 00:44:46.840
from lack of warmth. I've put two more logs on

717
00:44:46.880 --> 00:44:54.000
the fire, and I've selected something extra for us to enjoy.

718
00:44:55.119 --> 00:44:59.599
What's that? Well, I suppose we'll both just have to

719
00:44:59.639 --> 00:45:05.400
find out, won't we. Now enjoy your teeth, enjoy the chair,

720
00:45:06.159 --> 00:45:12.159
enjoy the roar of my fire, and know that as

721
00:45:12.320 --> 00:45:23.519
time goes on, the dark deepens. Well the Night reveals.

722
00:45:23.199 --> 00:45:29.039

to your happiness and entertaining guests, to your enjoyment of

733
00:46:14.119 --> 00:46:17.679
everyday meals. Yes, right now a glass full would be

734
00:46:17.840 --> 00:46:21.599
very pleasant, as Roma winds bring you keenan Wynn in

735
00:46:21.639 --> 00:46:24.400
a remarkable tale of suspense.

736
00:46:29.679 --> 00:46:32.079
Go ahead, tell us the story, mister Jordan. It might

737
00:46:32.159 --> 00:46:36.039
help to get it out of your system. Yes, go ahead, Harry,

738
00:46:36.320 --> 00:46:39.239
Oh tell it here marine in front of you.

739
00:46:40.000 --> 00:46:42.960
Sure I can stand it if you can.

740
00:46:43.400 --> 00:46:48.559
Well, all right, I'll tell it. When I first began

741
00:46:48.679 --> 00:46:53.719
to know for sure two weeks ago, I should have

742
00:46:53.760 --> 00:46:57.960
known before that something was wrong. I should have known

743
00:46:58.000 --> 00:47:01.039
by our eyes. It was a queer look in them,

744
00:47:02.039 --> 00:47:05.000
staring at me one minute, avoiding me the next.

745
00:47:06.320 --> 00:47:06.639
Well.

746
00:47:07.239 --> 00:47:09.880
I came home late one Monday night. They were asleep,

747
00:47:09.960 --> 00:47:14.360
my son Johnny and my wife here, Marie. I lay

748
00:47:14.400 --> 00:47:17.920
in bed reviewing my day's work. You see, I'm an

749
00:47:17.960 --> 00:47:21.440
investigator for the Herkimer Fire Insurance Company, and while thinking

750
00:47:21.440 --> 00:47:25.480
about the fire on Second Avenue, I fell asleep Suddenly

751
00:47:26.159 --> 00:47:28.639
I was sitting bolt upright, wide awake, with a strange

752
00:47:28.679 --> 00:47:32.199
feeling of being alone in the room. I looked towards

753
00:47:32.199 --> 00:47:38.480
Marie's bed. It was too dark to see. I called Marie.

754
00:47:40.119 --> 00:47:45.079
Marie no answer. I got up and I walked to

755
00:47:45.119 --> 00:47:47.760
her bed. The quilt was bunched up. I pulled the

756
00:47:47.760 --> 00:47:53.079
covers down. The bed was empty. In the bathroom, oh,

757
00:47:53.239 --> 00:47:57.440
she wasn't there, and not in Johnny's room either. Johnny

758
00:47:57.480 --> 00:48:01.519
was alone. Marie wasn't in the apartment. I put on

759
00:48:01.559 --> 00:48:03.239
the light. I looked at my watch. It was two

760
00:48:03.280 --> 00:48:06.800
in the morning. I got dressed, walked out, rang for

761
00:48:06.840 --> 00:48:12.039
the elevator. It was nothing, of course, it was nothing important,

762
00:48:12.880 --> 00:48:16.840
but my heart kept hammering away. Oh my, mister Jordan's

763
00:48:17.039 --> 00:48:19.039
kind of late for you. Yes, yes, good morning, Steve.

764
00:48:20.599 --> 00:48:23.159
Did you see my wife go downstairs? Yeah, mister Jordan

765
00:48:23.199 --> 00:48:27.119
and bought a half an hour ago. I say, oh, oh, yes, yes,

766
00:48:27.159 --> 00:48:29.360
of course. Did you see which way she went?

767
00:48:29.559 --> 00:48:29.800
Yeah?

768
00:48:29.840 --> 00:48:31.760
Sure, she went towards Turdy Avenue. Said she was going

769
00:48:31.800 --> 00:48:34.119
to going to the drug store. I guess, yeah, that's right.

770
00:48:34.119 --> 00:48:35.800
There's one over ninety sixth Street open.

771
00:48:35.599 --> 00:48:35.880
On the night.

772
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:40.400
You know. Oh, thanks, that was it. She went to

773
00:48:40.440 --> 00:48:43.280
the drug store. I was worried over nothing at all.

774
00:48:45.039 --> 00:48:48.039
I didn't know what to do quite I didn't want

775
00:48:48.039 --> 00:48:51.000
to follow her, but the elevator boy was watching me,

776
00:48:51.159 --> 00:48:56.119
so I strolled easily along toward Third Avenue. I stood

777
00:48:56.119 --> 00:48:58.280
on the deserted, dark corner and looked up and down

778
00:48:58.280 --> 00:49:02.519
the street. I saw her coming. She was walking toward

779
00:49:02.599 --> 00:49:03.239
me briskly.

780
00:49:04.519 --> 00:49:06.599
Harry, what are you doing here?

781
00:49:06.920 --> 00:49:08.360
Well, I got up and saw you were gone.

782
00:49:08.679 --> 00:49:12.400
I couldn't sleep, had a dreadful headache, so I decided

783
00:49:12.440 --> 00:49:13.800
to go down for some asspurn.

784
00:49:13.880 --> 00:49:17.400
Yeah, oh yeah, of course, the drug store in ninety

785
00:49:17.400 --> 00:49:21.840
sixth Street, but you were coming from ninety eighth Street.

786
00:49:22.079 --> 00:49:24.159
I took a little walk, thought some fresh air would

787
00:49:24.159 --> 00:49:24.760
do me some good.

788
00:49:25.360 --> 00:49:27.000
Oh yeah, yeah, it's a nice night.

789
00:49:27.079 --> 00:49:28.599
I've only been gone about ten minutes.

790
00:49:28.719 --> 00:49:30.199
Well, Steve said, you were going about.

791
00:49:30.039 --> 00:49:32.639
A half a nightly ten minutes. What time is it now,

792
00:49:33.679 --> 00:49:35.960
I've been out for about fifteen minutes. It's more than

793
00:49:36.159 --> 00:49:37.599
fifteen minutes, no more than that.

794
00:49:37.880 --> 00:49:41.960
Well, yeah, yeah, I guess so.

795
00:49:44.159 --> 00:49:44.360
Well.

796
00:49:45.000 --> 00:49:48.639
Everything seemed all right, but still I felt something was wrong.

797
00:49:49.599 --> 00:49:51.639
We got into our apartment and we both went to

798
00:49:51.719 --> 00:49:54.639
bed for a minute. The soo we said.

799
00:49:54.360 --> 00:50:00.960
Nothing listen a fire fire.

800
00:50:00.800 --> 00:50:03.679
Yeah yeah, not far or raised a couple of blocks

801
00:50:04.599 --> 00:50:07.400
by the river. I'd say, hey, that's my district.

802
00:50:07.760 --> 00:50:10.519
A sire who.

803
00:50:12.000 --> 00:50:14.880
Hello, Hello, Harry, try to wait in the middle of

804
00:50:14.880 --> 00:50:17.000
the night. There's a bad one over here. You three,

805
00:50:17.119 --> 00:50:18.760
second and third, maybe a total.

806
00:50:18.480 --> 00:50:22.280
Loss between second and third, mister parmonter on an apartment building.

807
00:50:22.360 --> 00:50:25.559
Yeah, ninety eighth Street, three four oh East ninety eight.

808
00:50:25.960 --> 00:50:26.960
I going to because I'd.

809
00:50:26.880 --> 00:50:28.280
Like you to go there direct first thing in the

810
00:50:28.320 --> 00:50:29.639
morning instead of coming to the office.

811
00:50:29.880 --> 00:50:31.840
Okay, I'll meet you there, okay, mister Parliament.

812
00:50:31.920 --> 00:50:35.199
Good night, A sire on ninety eighth Street.

813
00:50:35.679 --> 00:50:43.599
Yeah, yeah. I couldn't see Marie in the dark, but

814
00:50:43.719 --> 00:50:48.079
I knew, I knew she was staring at me. I

815
00:50:48.239 --> 00:50:49.000
was very tired.

816
00:50:50.239 --> 00:51:00.159
Good night, Marie, Good night, Harry.

his wife Marie. In the night reveals a tale well

842
00:52:56.400 --> 00:52:59.039
calculated to keep you in suspense.

843
00:53:11.519 --> 00:53:14.119
Go on, mister Jordan, Well, gentlemen. The next morning I

844
00:53:14.159 --> 00:53:16.320
went over to ninety eighth Street to inspect the remains

845
00:53:16.320 --> 00:53:18.719
of number three four Oh, to see if there was

846
00:53:18.719 --> 00:53:21.360
evidence of anything suspicious about the origin of the fire.

847
00:53:21.880 --> 00:53:25.199
And mister Parmonter was there here it is, got it.

848
00:53:25.519 --> 00:53:27.320
Guess we'll be paying off on this one, all right?

849
00:53:27.440 --> 00:53:30.679
Yeah, completely burned out. Anyone hurt a few, No one

850
00:53:30.760 --> 00:53:33.960
did like it had just installed anew fire escapes and

851
00:53:34.199 --> 00:53:36.480
just the walls left. Fire. Must have been quite a

852
00:53:36.519 --> 00:53:38.400
sight in the height of its glory. Yeah, cr a

853
00:53:38.480 --> 00:53:41.920
side say, those walls looked pretty bad. Mike leftmost any

854
00:53:41.960 --> 00:53:44.000
time all the building will have to be raised. I

855
00:53:44.119 --> 00:53:45.119
fired at a good job.

856
00:53:45.880 --> 00:53:51.360
There's a commissioner, Howry Morrel knowing about the fire commissioner No,

857
00:53:51.480 --> 00:53:51.960
not thing.

858
00:53:52.119 --> 00:53:53.159
Well, we don't have a look.

859
00:53:53.239 --> 00:53:55.000
I wouldn't go in there, Jordan, there was war.

860
00:53:55.280 --> 00:53:56.280
I can take care of myself.

861
00:53:56.320 --> 00:53:57.599
Maybe you better not go inside.

862
00:53:58.079 --> 00:54:00.199
Don't worry about me. I know fires is as well

863
00:54:00.239 --> 00:54:02.960
as anyone. You stay outside, mister Palmer, I'm going in.

864
00:54:05.480 --> 00:54:09.599
I walked gingerly into the black and ruined hallway and

865
00:54:09.719 --> 00:54:12.840
ashes up to my ankles until I reached the remains

866
00:54:12.880 --> 00:54:17.360
of the stairway. Underneath were several baby carriages, just twisted

867
00:54:17.400 --> 00:54:21.960
pieces of metal. Burning fragment of something felln nearby.

868
00:54:23.559 --> 00:54:24.159
I'm all right.

869
00:54:25.599 --> 00:54:29.119
Poked around near the carriages, sifting through the fine, clean ashes.

870
00:54:30.000 --> 00:54:35.280
Something caught my eye, a glomb of yellow metal. I

871
00:54:35.360 --> 00:54:40.320
picked it up and I worked my way out. She's

872
00:54:40.320 --> 00:54:42.840
burned through, isn't you clean through? Nothing left to her?

873
00:54:43.119 --> 00:54:43.719
You find anything?

874
00:54:44.119 --> 00:54:44.239
Oh?

875
00:54:44.320 --> 00:54:48.079
Nothing much? Fires started in the hallway, all right, cellars untouched?

876
00:54:48.079 --> 00:54:50.679
Fire works its way up? What's that in your hand?

877
00:54:50.960 --> 00:54:51.239
All that?

878
00:54:51.960 --> 00:54:54.039
Oh, it's just a piece of metal I found here.

879
00:54:54.400 --> 00:54:56.239
It's just picked it up for my kid. He likes

880
00:54:56.239 --> 00:54:57.000
shiny things.

881
00:54:57.199 --> 00:54:59.400
What do you think, Commissioner, Oh, probably one of those

882
00:54:59.440 --> 00:55:01.000
gadgests they have on baby carriage.

883
00:55:01.079 --> 00:55:05.880
Yeah, I guess you're right. Yeah, it didn't anything, but

884
00:55:06.039 --> 00:55:09.880
it was something I had run my fingernail across. This

885
00:55:10.000 --> 00:55:14.440
glob of metal looked like gold. I would examine it

886
00:55:14.440 --> 00:55:23.000
and detail at home. Yay, how are you? Johnny?

887
00:55:23.440 --> 00:55:24.679
Mama says I was bait.

888
00:55:24.960 --> 00:55:26.679
Jerry. You're home early?

889
00:55:27.280 --> 00:55:29.159
Yeah, yeah, I got sooner. I got through sooner than

890
00:55:29.159 --> 00:55:29.719
I expected.

891
00:55:31.719 --> 00:55:33.960
What is it? What is it here?

892
00:55:34.000 --> 00:55:37.480
You're a locket? You're not wearing it? You never had

893
00:55:37.480 --> 00:55:38.199
it off before?

894
00:55:38.599 --> 00:55:42.079
My locket? Well, well, don't you remember daddy?

895
00:55:42.119 --> 00:55:44.119
Can I go to see Davy Taylor.

896
00:55:43.840 --> 00:55:44.440
For a minute?

897
00:55:44.519 --> 00:55:45.639
Yes, yes, trying to go ahead?

898
00:55:46.039 --> 00:55:48.039
All right, thanks Danny.

899
00:55:48.840 --> 00:55:50.519
You shouldn't have done that, Harry. I didn't want him

900
00:55:50.519 --> 00:55:51.559
to go. He hasn't had his dinner.

901
00:55:51.639 --> 00:55:55.679
Never mind, Johnny, what did you say happened to the locket?

902
00:55:56.199 --> 00:55:57.440
Why I gave it to you?

903
00:55:57.639 --> 00:55:57.719
Me?

904
00:55:58.039 --> 00:55:59.880
Well, I put it in your pocket. You have it fit?

905
00:56:00.159 --> 00:56:00.880
The catch was loose.

906
00:56:01.559 --> 00:56:03.679
I don't remember I put it in your pocket, Harry.

907
00:56:03.760 --> 00:56:05.480
I forgot to mention it to you. I wanted you

908
00:56:05.519 --> 00:56:07.519
to take it to the jewelers, get the catch fixed.

909
00:56:07.920 --> 00:56:09.639
I just put it in your coat pocket while you

910
00:56:09.639 --> 00:56:14.159
were shaving. When yesterday, yes, yesterday morning.

911
00:56:14.440 --> 00:56:16.239
Oh well, it should be in my pocket now. I

912
00:56:16.239 --> 00:56:25.079
wore this suit yesterday too. Nothing in my pockets, Marie, Well, Marie, yes, Harry,

913
00:56:24.159 --> 00:56:26.559
is anything wrong with you?

914
00:56:26.639 --> 00:56:28.320
I'm perfectly all right. There's not a thing wrong.

915
00:56:28.360 --> 00:56:28.599
With me.

916
00:56:29.159 --> 00:56:31.480
Well, you look worried, as if you had something on

917
00:56:31.519 --> 00:56:32.000
your mind.

918
00:56:32.239 --> 00:56:34.920
It's nothing. I've just been having a headache.

919
00:56:35.119 --> 00:56:36.280
Maybe you ought to see a doctor.

920
00:56:36.360 --> 00:56:37.960
No, it really doesn't amount to much.

921
00:56:38.599 --> 00:56:41.719
Well, I think I'll take another look for the locket.

922
00:56:42.119 --> 00:56:45.280
Uh which suit did you say? You put it in.

923
00:56:45.599 --> 00:56:49.360
Your your blue suit? I think maybe it was a

924
00:56:49.440 --> 00:56:50.000
gray though I.

925
00:56:52.719 --> 00:56:55.559
Couldn't make it out. What had she done with the lockett?

926
00:56:55.599 --> 00:56:58.599
Had she pawned it? Had she given it away? And

927
00:56:58.639 --> 00:57:02.880
then I remember something. I went into the bathroom and

928
00:57:02.880 --> 00:57:07.480
locked the door. I looked at this shapeless little glove

929
00:57:07.559 --> 00:57:11.320
of yellow metal. I rubbed the blackened spots away until

930
00:57:11.320 --> 00:57:14.199
all of it was gleaming. I took a nail file

931
00:57:14.199 --> 00:57:16.440
out of the medicine chest and began to file it.

932
00:57:17.039 --> 00:57:19.559
I kept filing until I had enlarged the crack to

933
00:57:19.679 --> 00:57:21.960
the full length of the piece of gold. Then I

934
00:57:22.039 --> 00:57:26.039
slipped the nail file inside and cried. Pried it open

935
00:57:27.159 --> 00:57:31.000
tiny fragments of glass. And then then I saw a

936
00:57:31.000 --> 00:57:37.320
piece of scorched paper. It was a photograph, the picture

937
00:57:37.360 --> 00:57:41.000
of my son Johnny. This glob of metal was my

938
00:57:41.079 --> 00:57:44.159
wife's locket. I put the locket and the picture in

939
00:57:44.159 --> 00:57:45.679
my pocket and walked out.

940
00:57:46.679 --> 00:57:47.159
All right.

941
00:57:47.159 --> 00:57:50.119
Now, now, what's the largest continent in the world.

942
00:57:50.320 --> 00:57:56.519
I know it it it? And the next largest that

943
00:57:56.800 --> 00:58:00.000
easy Africa? Full of jungles. That's where it.

944
00:58:01.000 --> 00:58:02.639
Isn't the time for Johnny to be in bed?

945
00:58:03.079 --> 00:58:05.079
Yes, I had no idea. It was so late. You

946
00:58:05.159 --> 00:58:07.000
run along to your room, Johnny. I'll be in a minute.

947
00:58:07.119 --> 00:58:10.199
All right, good night, gonight Johnny sleep well.

948
00:58:12.639 --> 00:58:17.400
He's getting along very well in school, except for arithmetic.

949
00:58:18.199 --> 00:58:19.400
Seems to be having a little trouble.

950
00:58:19.760 --> 00:58:20.920
Johnny will be all right.

951
00:58:21.880 --> 00:58:26.159
Yes, Johnny will be all right. I know he'll be

952
00:58:26.199 --> 00:58:26.559
all right.

953
00:58:29.239 --> 00:58:33.559
I watched her. She seemed very uneasy. I walked over

954
00:58:33.599 --> 00:58:36.360
to my pipe rack, where I kept several books of

955
00:58:36.400 --> 00:58:41.119
matches in the jar. But there weren't any there. All

956
00:58:41.119 --> 00:58:44.360
this time, I knew she was watching me, watching me closely.

957
00:58:45.320 --> 00:58:48.360
I looked behind the rack. There wasn't a match around.

958
00:58:51.760 --> 00:58:53.280
What the devil happened all my matches?

959
00:58:53.639 --> 00:58:56.079
I have a match here. Let me light it for you.

960
00:58:56.119 --> 00:58:58.039
Did you take the matches out of the jar or well?

961
00:58:58.440 --> 00:58:58.800
Did you?

962
00:58:59.119 --> 00:59:02.719
Yes? I needed them in the kitchen. Shall I light

963
00:59:02.719 --> 00:59:03.400
your pipe for you?

964
00:59:03.440 --> 00:59:08.119
No, No, I'll light it myself. I picked the match

965
00:59:08.159 --> 00:59:10.639
out of the booklets. It was a clean white match

966
00:59:10.679 --> 00:59:11.760
with a green head.

967
00:59:12.360 --> 00:59:12.880
I struck it.

968
00:59:12.880 --> 00:59:16.559
Against the side. The match sputtered up into a yellow flame,

969
00:59:16.719 --> 00:59:20.119
fringed on the bottom with blue. Marie stared at it

970
00:59:21.039 --> 00:59:22.679
until I felt the sharp bite of the flame on

971
00:59:22.760 --> 00:59:23.159
my thumb.

972
00:59:23.800 --> 00:59:25.880
Would you like a cup of tea?

973
00:59:25.920 --> 00:59:32.119
Harry? No, no, dear, I don't think so, Marie. Leave

974
00:59:32.159 --> 00:59:33.199
the matches on the table.

975
00:59:33.400 --> 00:59:36.079
I need them. I'm rather short of matches. The pilot

976
00:59:36.159 --> 00:59:36.920
light isn't working.

977
00:59:37.079 --> 00:59:39.000
Is this the only book of matches in the house.

978
00:59:39.079 --> 00:59:42.679
I have to get some tomorrow. Where are you going, Harry.

979
00:59:42.440 --> 00:59:45.119
Get a drink of water, I'll get your hair. Never mind, Marie,

980
00:59:45.159 --> 00:59:50.639
I'll get it myself. I went into the kitchen. There

981
00:59:50.719 --> 00:59:54.920
was a paper bag alongside the gas range matches, all

982
00:59:54.920 --> 00:59:58.360
thrown in helter skelter, books of matches and safety matches,

983
00:59:58.400 --> 01:00:01.800
all mixed together. I walked back and sat down in

984
01:00:01.840 --> 01:00:08.239
my chair. Marie, you've been having headaches lately.

985
01:00:08.639 --> 01:00:10.599
I'm just tired. Nothing serious.

986
01:00:10.760 --> 01:00:12.800
Well, I would you like to go away for a

987
01:00:12.800 --> 01:00:15.960
few days, you know, take a vacation. I'll get a

988
01:00:16.000 --> 01:00:18.519
maid to take care of Johnny and me. Do you

989
01:00:18.559 --> 01:00:19.000
want a group.

990
01:00:19.079 --> 01:00:20.880
No, no, I don't need a vacation. There's nothing wrong

991
01:00:20.920 --> 01:00:22.320
with me, but Harry, there is.

992
01:00:22.679 --> 01:00:26.000
Yes, there's nothing the matter.

993
01:00:26.079 --> 01:00:27.679
We were about to say something else.

994
01:00:28.639 --> 01:00:30.239
I've got to go into Johnny's room and see that

995
01:00:30.239 --> 01:00:31.880
he's covered. He always shows the covers all.

996
01:00:34.079 --> 01:00:37.320
I sat there looking at the door, and then I

997
01:00:37.360 --> 01:00:40.920
glanced about the room. There was the pack of matches

998
01:00:41.000 --> 01:00:45.199
lying open on the table. I closed the cover and

999
01:00:45.239 --> 01:00:50.639
my eye caught her purse lying nearby. It was bulging. Harry, Oh,

1000
01:00:50.719 --> 01:00:56.679
what's the matter my purse? Yeah, yes, your purse here.

1001
01:00:56.719 --> 01:01:00.519
Look see the handles loose, and it's full of matches,

1002
01:01:00.679 --> 01:01:03.400
a dozen books of them. And these newspaper clippings get

1003
01:01:03.679 --> 01:01:05.639
to me. Why are you saving these clippings? Why do

1004
01:01:05.679 --> 01:01:06.800
you carry matches with you?

1005
01:01:07.280 --> 01:01:09.679
I thought the matches in a store A doesn't advice.

1006
01:01:10.000 --> 01:01:13.320
And these clippings fire one hundred and twelfth Street causes

1007
01:01:13.360 --> 01:01:16.960
severe damage, and these others. Why are you saving these clippings?

1008
01:01:17.000 --> 01:01:17.320
Marie?

1009
01:01:17.719 --> 01:01:21.599
There's nothing wrong in dam I'm interested. I'm interested in

1010
01:01:21.639 --> 01:01:24.280
your work. I'm trying to keep a file on fires.

1011
01:01:25.119 --> 01:01:26.280
It will help you in your work.

1012
01:01:26.679 --> 01:01:29.000
That's very considerate, Marie.

1013
01:01:29.280 --> 01:01:31.119
Oh, Harry, You're so good?

1014
01:01:31.719 --> 01:01:39.679
Why should this have to happen to us?

1015
01:01:40.400 --> 01:01:43.639
As far as midnight I went to bed, Marie did

1016
01:01:43.679 --> 01:01:47.239
not follow me. I lay in the semi darkness, wide awake,

1017
01:01:47.320 --> 01:01:50.360
trying to think what I should do. I couldn't collect

1018
01:01:50.360 --> 01:01:53.519
my thoughts. Every time I closed my eyes, I could

1019
01:01:53.519 --> 01:01:56.000
see the flame of the match yellow and blue, crawling

1020
01:01:56.000 --> 01:01:56.960
along the match stick.

1021
01:01:58.800 --> 01:02:01.599
Here drinks, Harry, It will help you sleep.

1022
01:02:02.440 --> 01:02:03.079
What is it?

1023
01:02:03.079 --> 01:02:05.000
It's Coco. It's very good for you.

1024
01:02:05.880 --> 01:02:08.119
I'm not the one that's having trouble falling asleep.

1025
01:02:09.000 --> 01:02:12.239
We both couldn't sleep last night. I'm taking some of

1026
01:02:12.239 --> 01:02:13.320
this myself as soon as.

1027
01:02:13.280 --> 01:02:16.800
I go to bed, all right, leave it on the nightstand.

1028
01:02:17.159 --> 01:02:19.440
You'll be sure to drink it while it's hot, Yes.

1029
01:02:19.239 --> 01:02:28.960
Marie, I will. Good night, Good night, Marie. Coco. And

1030
01:02:29.000 --> 01:02:32.840
then suddenly I knew. I looked around quickly for something

1031
01:02:32.880 --> 01:02:35.360
to pour it in. It was the radiator pan that

1032
01:02:35.440 --> 01:02:38.000
was empty. I poured the cup of liquid into it,

1033
01:02:38.679 --> 01:02:41.719
and then I laid back and waited, waited for her

1034
01:02:41.760 --> 01:02:45.719
next move. About a half an hour later, I heard

1035
01:02:45.719 --> 01:02:49.480
the door open softly, and Marie tiptoed toward my bed.

1036
01:02:51.000 --> 01:02:55.000
Harry, Harry, are you asleep.

1037
01:02:56.280 --> 01:03:01.079
I didn't answer, just kept breathing evenly. She hovered for

1038
01:03:01.119 --> 01:03:03.800
a moment over me, and then she tiptoed out, carefully,

1039
01:03:03.840 --> 01:03:07.519
closing the door behind her. I dashed out of bed

1040
01:03:07.559 --> 01:03:10.440
and hurried into my clothes quickly. I poured the liquid

1041
01:03:10.440 --> 01:03:12.159
from the pan into a bottle and put the bottle

1042
01:03:12.199 --> 01:03:15.119
into my pocket. Then I grabbed my coat and followed her.

1043
01:03:15.119 --> 01:03:18.239
I rang for the elevator. Showed me a few minutes headway.

1044
01:03:18.960 --> 01:03:21.559
I'd catch up with the easily, and then well, then

1045
01:03:21.599 --> 01:03:25.159
we'd have a show down. Steve looked at me with

1046
01:03:25.199 --> 01:03:31.840
controlled amazement. Hello Steve, Hello, mister Jordan. My wife went

1047
01:03:31.880 --> 01:03:34.519
down a moment ago, didn't she. Yeah, mister Jordan just

1048
01:03:34.559 --> 01:03:37.039
took her down. She went toward Third Avenue, didn't she.

1049
01:03:38.239 --> 01:03:38.880
I think so, sir.

1050
01:03:39.280 --> 01:03:41.239
She started to stop for a minute, then turned towards

1051
01:03:41.239 --> 01:03:43.519
Third Avenue. I had to get back to the elevator

1052
01:03:43.519 --> 01:03:45.159
because you were ringing.

1053
01:03:47.559 --> 01:03:49.360
When I reached the corner, I looked up and down

1054
01:03:49.400 --> 01:03:53.719
Third Avenue. Then I saw her. She was walking north.

1055
01:03:54.679 --> 01:03:56.199
I crossed to the other side of the street and

1056
01:03:56.199 --> 01:03:59.320
followed her, keeping in the distance. At ninety eighth Street,

1057
01:03:59.360 --> 01:04:02.880
she turned east down the middle of the block with

1058
01:04:03.039 --> 01:04:06.800
the remains of that last night's fire. She paused in

1059
01:04:06.800 --> 01:04:10.280
front of the gutted building for a long time, just

1060
01:04:10.320 --> 01:04:15.280
stood there looking at it, and then she walked inside. I

1061
01:04:15.320 --> 01:04:18.559
waited for a few seconds and then followed her. Was

1062
01:04:18.639 --> 01:04:22.199
pitch dark in the burned out hallway. Ahead of me.

1063
01:04:23.280 --> 01:04:26.599
I could see the glow of a match, and I

1064
01:04:26.639 --> 01:04:30.440
saw what she was doing. She was collecting the charred

1065
01:04:30.440 --> 01:04:35.440
debris and the baby carriages. How foolish. There wasn't anything

1066
01:04:35.840 --> 01:04:39.400
anything that could burn there. Now she lit another match.

1067
01:04:40.440 --> 01:04:43.719
I watched the flame light up her face, faced so

1068
01:04:43.800 --> 01:04:46.039
intent upon her work that she didn't hear me approach.

1069
01:04:47.840 --> 01:04:48.159
Marie.

1070
01:04:49.079 --> 01:04:49.679
Who's there?

1071
01:04:49.880 --> 01:04:53.239
That's me, Harry, Harry, why didn't you come along, Marie?

1072
01:04:53.239 --> 01:04:57.880
We'd better get out of here, police. I took her hand,

1073
01:04:57.920 --> 01:05:01.320
and without a word, she came along. We walked home

1074
01:05:01.360 --> 01:05:04.920
in complete silence. We both knew. When we came to

1075
01:05:04.960 --> 01:05:08.400
our apartment house, I stopped and ranked for the elevator,

1076
01:05:10.000 --> 01:05:12.119
and the light of the hallway I could see her face,

1077
01:05:13.480 --> 01:05:20.039
my wife's face, ashy, gray, her eyes brightened, painful. You

1078
01:05:20.119 --> 01:05:22.360
run upstairs, Marie. I'll be along in a minute.

1079
01:05:22.440 --> 01:05:23.360
Harry, where are you going.

1080
01:05:23.480 --> 01:05:24.199
I'll be right back.

1081
01:05:24.239 --> 01:05:25.920
Please, Harry, don't do anything.

1082
01:05:25.920 --> 01:05:29.320
You run along, Marie. No, no, I'm only going to

1083
01:05:29.360 --> 01:05:31.119
the drug store to get something. I'll be back in

1084
01:05:31.159 --> 01:05:43.639
a few minutes. I came home half an hour later.

1085
01:05:44.320 --> 01:05:45.320
She was waiting for me.

1086
01:05:45.960 --> 01:05:49.840
Did you do it, Harry, Harry, please tell me.

1087
01:05:49.880 --> 01:05:50.480
I got to know.

1088
01:05:51.280 --> 01:05:53.360
I had the cocoa you gave me analyzed.

1089
01:05:53.440 --> 01:05:54.000
I'm sorry.

1090
01:05:54.000 --> 01:05:55.719
I had to do it, don't you see I couldn't

1091
01:05:55.760 --> 01:05:56.519
help it.

1092
01:05:56.519 --> 01:05:58.719
It was very easy for the druggist, especially when I

1093
01:05:58.719 --> 01:06:01.679
told him what I thought was in it. That's sodium

1094
01:06:01.679 --> 01:06:03.519
stuff that makes you sleep through an earthquake.

1095
01:06:03.599 --> 01:06:06.559
Please try to understand, Harry, you must understand.

1096
01:06:06.920 --> 01:06:08.000
Yes, Johnny's all right.

1097
01:06:09.159 --> 01:06:13.119
Well, I was sorry for Marie. She looked so haggard

1098
01:06:13.159 --> 01:06:17.639
and worn. It wasn't her fault. I was sorry for myself.

1099
01:06:18.639 --> 01:06:21.639
My head was roaring. I wasn't feeling too well. I

1100
01:06:21.719 --> 01:06:24.280
kept seeing sparks in front of my eyes. I closed

1101
01:06:24.280 --> 01:06:28.400
my eyes for a moment. Let's go to bed, Harry, Marie.

1102
01:06:29.559 --> 01:06:33.480
We can do something. Let's burn up every match, every

1103
01:06:33.559 --> 01:06:34.280
match in the house.

1104
01:06:34.320 --> 01:06:35.480
We'll never bring another match in.

1105
01:06:35.519 --> 01:06:38.719
No, no, Harry, we can't do that. No, Harry, not now.

1106
01:06:38.880 --> 01:06:43.320
See this is the first book. It's turning black. We'll

1107
01:06:43.320 --> 01:06:44.599
do it with every book of matches.

1108
01:06:44.679 --> 01:06:45.320
It's no use.

1109
01:06:45.400 --> 01:06:46.840
It's no use, Harry.

1110
01:06:46.639 --> 01:06:50.679
Grange that this should happen to me, me a fire inspector.

1111
01:06:51.559 --> 01:06:55.800
Oh that's funny. Give me the matches, Marie, all the matches.

1112
01:06:55.840 --> 01:06:56.719
No, I can't do that.

1113
01:06:56.800 --> 01:06:59.519
I won't give them to Please please don't, please, don't

1114
01:06:59.559 --> 01:06:59.880
take them.

1115
01:07:00.000 --> 01:07:01.480
Do anything you want anything?

1116
01:07:01.559 --> 01:07:02.400
Where did you hide them?

1117
01:07:02.440 --> 01:07:02.760
Tell me?

1118
01:07:02.800 --> 01:07:03.400
Where are they?

1119
01:07:03.400 --> 01:07:06.199
In side the range behind the paper brad.

1120
01:07:08.039 --> 01:07:10.239
I druck her hand and she sank to the floor

1121
01:07:10.280 --> 01:07:14.880
in a puddle, weeping, And I went into the kitchen

1122
01:07:14.920 --> 01:07:16.199
and I got all the matches.

1123
01:07:17.199 --> 01:07:19.800
Please, please, Harry, don't burn them up.

1124
01:07:20.199 --> 01:07:26.119
I know my anger was cooling off. Look, Marie, look up.

1125
01:07:26.679 --> 01:07:30.039
See I light each book of matches, one of the

1126
01:07:30.079 --> 01:07:34.559
time until we're all gone up in smoke. Yellow flame

1127
01:07:34.599 --> 01:07:38.559
licked its way down the matches cover, caught fire and blackened.

1128
01:07:39.519 --> 01:07:42.079
I watched to look at the flame with dazed eyes.

1129
01:07:44.079 --> 01:07:46.519
Listen, listen, Harry, do you hear.

1130
01:07:46.559 --> 01:07:47.760
It's just someone in the hall.

1131
01:07:48.079 --> 01:07:52.639
It's more than someone. Something's happened. Something has happened.

1132
01:07:52.719 --> 01:07:53.480
You'll take a look.

1133
01:07:55.960 --> 01:07:56.920
The house is fire.

1134
01:07:57.159 --> 01:08:01.239
Yes, yes, wake up, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. We'll have to hurry.

1135
01:08:01.280 --> 01:08:02.599
The flames are coming up the stairs.

1136
01:08:02.599 --> 01:08:06.880
There there's an upward draft to the houses.

1137
01:08:06.920 --> 01:08:07.880
The fire. The house is the fire.

1138
01:08:07.920 --> 01:08:09.320
We've got to get out to lay.

1139
01:08:09.320 --> 01:08:10.760
To go down, we'll have to go up through the roof.

1140
01:08:12.800 --> 01:08:13.800
I hurt my legs.

1141
01:08:15.639 --> 01:08:17.920
She'll come along away.

1142
01:08:18.560 --> 01:08:20.199
It's all right, Johnny, go along with Daddy.

1143
01:08:20.239 --> 01:08:21.960
I'll follow you.

1144
01:08:23.560 --> 01:08:25.239
Hold on my armor, hold.

1145
01:08:25.000 --> 01:08:28.159
On, come on, give me your hand, Johnny. Now, don't

1146
01:08:28.159 --> 01:08:30.800
be scared. The fire won't hurt you. It won't hurt you.

1147
01:08:30.880 --> 01:08:31.079
Flow.

1148
01:08:38.960 --> 01:08:42.520
We made our way upstairs, very slowly because of Maurice Sprainackle.

1149
01:08:43.159 --> 01:08:44.239
Finally we got to the roof.

1150
01:08:45.000 --> 01:08:47.239
There was some fireman on the next roof, about ten

1151
01:08:47.279 --> 01:08:48.640
feet separated the two buildings.

1152
01:08:48.720 --> 01:08:50.840
I don't get well, rap.

1153
01:08:52.159 --> 01:08:55.720
Can you have to jump, Daddy. We'll be able to jump.

1154
01:08:56.119 --> 01:08:57.520
All right, Johnny, don't be scared.

1155
01:08:57.560 --> 01:09:01.159
Putting a board across the roofs. We'll walk ross all right.

1156
01:09:01.279 --> 01:09:02.600
Now, one at a time.

1157
01:09:03.199 --> 01:09:04.920
Tyler upright, he come across.

1158
01:09:04.960 --> 01:09:08.119
Johnny, you go first. Don't be afraid. There there rup

1159
01:09:08.199 --> 01:09:09.439
will hold you in case you slip.

1160
01:09:10.359 --> 01:09:10.840
You gotta go.

1161
01:09:11.159 --> 01:09:12.640
I'll go right after you, Johnny.

1162
01:09:13.000 --> 01:09:16.920
You go ahead, Johnny, mother will follow you. Oh, don't

1163
01:09:16.920 --> 01:09:18.439
turn around, keep walking.

1164
01:09:20.439 --> 01:09:26.880
All right, keep saying, how you ready? God slip? Hey, hoy,

1165
01:09:26.920 --> 01:09:31.039
one of you guys get on the board. All right,

1166
01:09:31.279 --> 01:09:32.600
all right, your mother's gonna.

1167
01:09:32.399 --> 01:09:32.800
Be all right.

1168
01:09:32.880 --> 01:09:35.680
You tossed the board off, Harry, I saw you do it.

1169
01:09:35.840 --> 01:09:37.439
No I did, I didn't.

1170
01:09:38.199 --> 01:09:39.640
That is okay, lady.

1171
01:09:40.119 --> 01:09:41.920
Just Tyler over on here, don't be afraid.

1172
01:09:42.000 --> 01:09:48.680
Don't look down ready, okay, boy, yeah, all right, how

1173
01:09:48.680 --> 01:09:51.239
are you a missip? All right, that's right, Tyler overron here,

1174
01:09:51.439 --> 01:10:00.119
all said, okay.

1175
01:10:01.600 --> 01:10:02.159
On the ground.

1176
01:10:02.199 --> 01:10:05.079
We stood there, the three of us, watching the fire.

1177
01:10:06.079 --> 01:10:08.000
Sparks were shooting up through the hole where it had

1178
01:10:08.039 --> 01:10:11.640
bit through. Great flames shot out, stabbing at the sky.

1179
01:10:12.720 --> 01:10:15.560
The top of the roof was burning now. A red

1180
01:10:15.680 --> 01:10:18.960
plane crawled along, searching out the inflammable spots.

1181
01:10:19.640 --> 01:10:22.760
A wooden pole caught fire and blazed up in.

1182
01:10:22.760 --> 01:10:26.560
A long, narrow, curving arc. The wind was helping us,

1183
01:10:27.720 --> 01:10:32.920
and all this time Marie was shaking, shaking violently, not

1184
01:10:33.119 --> 01:10:36.600
with cold. I pity there. And then she threw up

1185
01:10:36.600 --> 01:10:42.760
her hands and shrieked, darling.

1186
01:10:42.439 --> 01:10:47.239
Don't.

1187
01:10:46.800 --> 01:10:47.119
Don't do.

1188
01:10:48.840 --> 01:10:52.600
The police don't know what you're saying.

1189
01:10:54.920 --> 01:11:02.279
It's no use hearing officer fires. You're not accidental. There's

1190
01:11:02.319 --> 01:11:05.239
a piral maniac, a criminal, I know it is.

1191
01:11:06.119 --> 01:11:12.439
You got to arrest the person, all right, lady, all

1192
01:11:12.560 --> 01:11:12.920
right now?

1193
01:11:13.159 --> 01:11:13.720
What is this?

1194
01:11:13.760 --> 01:11:15.159
Who's the piral maniac?

1195
01:11:16.920 --> 01:11:17.439
Criminal?

1196
01:11:17.520 --> 01:11:19.680
Is my husband?

1197
01:11:20.600 --> 01:11:26.279
Harry Jordan's this man here a rescue as.

1198
01:11:40.279 --> 01:11:44.239
Well. That's about all there is to the story, gentlemen.

1199
01:11:45.479 --> 01:11:52.119
And I was brought here. Must have sounded kind of well,

1200
01:11:52.720 --> 01:11:55.039
painful for you to hear it all over again, Marie.

1201
01:11:55.880 --> 01:11:58.359
No, it was all right, Harry.

1202
01:11:59.439 --> 01:12:03.399
I wonder well I got a cigarette?

1203
01:12:03.520 --> 01:12:09.239
Could I No, I'll write it for you, Harry.

1204
01:12:09.520 --> 01:12:12.760
You don't have to worry. I won't try and keep

1205
01:12:12.800 --> 01:12:16.560
the matches here. She's been awful good to me. Gentlemen,

1206
01:12:18.119 --> 01:12:22.479
take care of him, won't you. She tried everything to help.

1207
01:12:23.560 --> 01:12:25.600
She hid the mattress so as to keep them from me.

1208
01:12:26.720 --> 01:12:30.119
She's been trying to give me sleeping pills so I wouldn't.

1209
01:12:31.800 --> 01:12:33.000
It's all right, Harry.

1210
01:12:34.479 --> 01:12:39.199
I'm sorry about the locket. Deer must have fallen out

1211
01:12:39.239 --> 01:12:40.960
of my coat when I was in that building at

1212
01:12:41.000 --> 01:12:41.760
ninety eighth Street.

1213
01:12:42.199 --> 01:12:47.199
Hi, it's all right, Harry. You can buy me another one.

1214
01:12:47.239 --> 01:12:55.159
Sometimes you can't blame anybody for liking fires. It's not

1215
01:12:55.319 --> 01:13:01.760
their fault. Fires are beautiful to watch, so bright and clean,

1216
01:13:03.199 --> 01:13:06.399
they burn up all of filth and dirt, and the

1217
01:13:06.560 --> 01:13:11.760
magnificent to watch, especially the big ones, the way the

1218
01:13:11.800 --> 01:13:17.119
flames roar and crackle, lighting up everything around you. The

1219
01:13:17.279 --> 01:13:20.640
beautiful fire, the beautiful fires.

1220
01:13:21.760 --> 01:13:38.920
Beautiful suspense presented by Aroma Wines r O m A,

1221
01:13:39.560 --> 01:13:42.800
made in California for enjoyment throughout the world.

1222
01:13:44.840 --> 01:13:50.840
I must admit the air seems to get colder and colder,

1223
01:13:50.880 --> 01:13:56.199
as if somehow a draft could penetrate over two feet

1224
01:13:56.319 --> 01:14:06.640
of concrete. I don't suppose that's really possible, now, is it. Oh,

1225
01:14:06.720 --> 01:14:09.279
I'm not worried. I'm not worried at all. I hope

1226
01:14:09.520 --> 01:14:15.319
you aren't either. Just relax, there's more joy to come.

1227
01:14:16.760 --> 01:14:26.359
There's nothing waiting in the cold dark. There's no one watching, hoping, pray,

1228
01:14:27.279 --> 01:14:32.479
and not in the spelling you're thinking of. In the dark,

1229
01:14:33.159 --> 01:14:40.159
I fear a lady with a key.

1230
01:14:39.479 --> 01:14:41.720
And now say hune for the mystery program.

1231
01:14:41.760 --> 01:14:45.119
That is unique among all mystery programs, because even when

1232
01:14:45.159 --> 01:14:48.720
you know who's guilty, you always receive a startling survive

1233
01:14:48.880 --> 01:14:52.560
at the final curtains in the Signal Oil program.

1234
01:14:53.039 --> 01:15:05.520
Go whistler er why.

1235
01:15:15.760 --> 01:15:19.199
Signal the famous Godfather Gasoline invite you to sit back

1236
01:15:19.239 --> 01:15:20.079
and enjoy.

1237
01:15:19.800 --> 01:15:23.199
Another strange story by the whistler.

1238
01:15:23.960 --> 01:15:26.840
For extra driving pleasure, the signal to look for is

1239
01:15:26.880 --> 01:15:31.600
the yellow and black circle time that identifies signal service stations.

1240
01:15:31.199 --> 01:15:32.520
From Canada to Mexico.

1241
01:15:33.279 --> 01:15:36.399
And for Sunday evening listening pleasure, the signal to listen

1242
01:15:36.439 --> 01:15:41.119
for is this whistle that identifies the Signal Oil program.

1243
01:15:41.399 --> 01:15:42.079
The whistler.

1244
01:15:59.039 --> 01:16:02.479
I am the whisperer, and I know many things.

1245
01:16:02.680 --> 01:16:04.039
For I walked by night.

1246
01:16:04.720 --> 01:16:07.520
I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of

1247
01:16:07.600 --> 01:16:11.199
men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yeah,

1248
01:16:11.720 --> 01:16:15.279
I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak.

1249
01:16:19.279 --> 01:16:20.039
And now for the.

1250
01:16:19.960 --> 01:16:25.159
Single oil company, the whipper Strange story, Lady with a key.

1251
01:16:25.119 --> 01:16:35.760
Yes, it was almost midnight when Joe Cannon drove his

1252
01:16:35.840 --> 01:16:38.680
car into the parking lot, got out and walked around

1253
01:16:38.680 --> 01:16:41.600
to the entrance to the Linden, a small restaurant and

1254
01:16:41.680 --> 01:16:44.119
cocktail bar on the Highway a few miles south of

1255
01:16:44.119 --> 01:16:47.960
Los Angeles. The Linden was a place he often take fronized,

1256
01:16:48.520 --> 01:16:52.079
especially when he had a deal loge. Most of Joe's

1257
01:16:52.199 --> 01:16:57.720
enterprises were arranged in cocktail bars, restaurants, almost anywhere but

1258
01:16:57.840 --> 01:17:02.119
a legitimate business office. But y'all tell them involved in

1259
01:17:02.199 --> 01:17:08.359
a legitimate deal inside. Joe nodded at the bartender, then

1260
01:17:08.520 --> 01:17:13.800
strolled over to the duke bot. I go coming around lately,

1261
01:17:13.920 --> 01:17:18.199
having pretty busy peep and a sandwich. You name it right, Hey,

1262
01:17:18.239 --> 01:17:28.439
hurry up? When they am on my way to San Diego, min.

1263
01:17:33.079 --> 01:17:40.560
Hurry uh yeah, but.

1264
01:17:40.920 --> 01:17:43.239
I couldn't help over here. And you tell the Boston

1265
01:17:43.399 --> 01:17:45.359
that you're on your way to San Diego.

1266
01:17:45.560 --> 01:17:45.960
Uh huh?

1267
01:17:46.640 --> 01:17:50.239
What you I was on my way there with my cargo.

1268
01:17:51.479 --> 01:17:53.720
I can't got it till tomorrow, and I'll just have

1269
01:17:53.880 --> 01:17:55.159
to be in San Diego by.

1270
01:17:55.119 --> 01:17:58.439
Morning, and I was wondering if right take you with me?

1271
01:18:00.159 --> 01:18:00.960
What you please?

1272
01:18:01.119 --> 01:18:05.399
Now, I'm sorry, My surf has to do with business.

1273
01:18:05.680 --> 01:18:09.680
My boss wouldn't like it if I mixed business with pleasure.

1274
01:18:10.600 --> 01:18:12.119
It's awfully important to me.

1275
01:18:12.520 --> 01:18:14.600
I wish I could help you, baby, but I can't.

1276
01:18:15.960 --> 01:18:24.159
I see well, I'm fine, so am I together. The

1277
01:18:24.239 --> 01:18:27.319
girl walks away, walks to a boot at the back

1278
01:18:27.399 --> 01:18:31.600
of the bar. He's attractive, isn't it, Joe? And the

1279
01:18:31.720 --> 01:18:34.199
link coach he's wearing is the real thing. You are

1280
01:18:34.199 --> 01:18:37.920
almost certain of that, Yet you have a feeling and

1281
01:18:38.119 --> 01:18:41.600
something pony about her. If you had some reason other

1282
01:18:41.720 --> 01:18:44.520
than a small automobile for asking you to drive in

1283
01:18:44.560 --> 01:18:48.000
to San Diego, you'll listen to the tune on the

1284
01:18:48.079 --> 01:18:50.319
jukebox for a moment, then walk up to the bar.

1285
01:18:51.239 --> 01:18:54.920
If you fly onto a stool piece, the bartender places

1286
01:18:54.960 --> 01:18:58.359
the sandwich in the bottle of beer before you ude today,

1287
01:18:58.520 --> 01:19:03.119
eh Man, I am oh. He asked you for a

1288
01:19:03.279 --> 01:19:07.439
ride down? You know already asked that couple back there,

1289
01:19:07.520 --> 01:19:10.199
the one on the books next to her. They turned

1290
01:19:10.199 --> 01:19:13.079
it down. You turn it down.

1291
01:19:14.640 --> 01:19:16.279
I don't like her story.

1292
01:19:17.119 --> 01:19:17.680
I don't know.

1293
01:19:18.000 --> 01:19:19.439
I think she's on the level.

1294
01:19:19.520 --> 01:19:21.640
She used the phone a little while before you came in,

1295
01:19:21.760 --> 01:19:26.119
talked a couple all like garagie huh. For me, she'd

1296
01:19:26.159 --> 01:19:28.159
be very pleasant company.

1297
01:19:28.279 --> 01:19:33.239
Jo Hey, you know something. Maybe I was too hot

1298
01:19:33.319 --> 01:19:35.319
on the little girl, and to.

1299
01:19:35.880 --> 01:19:40.399
Drive to San Diego three hours can get awful.

1300
01:19:41.640 --> 01:19:51.920
Sure, yeah, I'll be right back there. Pardon me, miss Oh,

1301
01:19:51.439 --> 01:19:54.680
I changed my mind. I'll take it to San Diego

1302
01:19:54.800 --> 01:19:55.399
just then want to go?

1303
01:19:55.760 --> 01:19:58.840
Oh, I certainly do. It means a great deal to me.

1304
01:20:00.760 --> 01:20:02.960
Can you stop by the way er, I finish my

1305
01:20:03.039 --> 01:20:05.159
sandwich and peer up a little business of the bartender.

1306
01:20:06.359 --> 01:20:07.399
You like a drink or something?

1307
01:20:07.600 --> 01:20:07.720
Oh?

1308
01:20:07.800 --> 01:20:11.479
No, no, thank you, all right, if you don't mind,

1309
01:20:11.840 --> 01:20:12.880
I'll wait in your car.

1310
01:20:13.119 --> 01:20:17.159
Oh sure, then the lot far aside black forty nine mass.

1311
01:20:17.520 --> 01:20:18.600
I'll be out in a few minutes.

1312
01:20:25.359 --> 01:20:28.319
Watch the girl as he hurries out and turning you

1313
01:20:28.479 --> 01:20:30.960
catch a glimpse of the couple seated in the next booth,

1314
01:20:31.399 --> 01:20:35.520
A young man a woman grinning at you. You shrug,

1315
01:20:35.680 --> 01:20:39.000
walk back to the bar and finish your sandwich, and

1316
01:20:39.199 --> 01:20:42.840
the bartender joined you. You taking the day?

1317
01:20:43.239 --> 01:20:47.199
Yeah, oh, puppy, thanks.

1318
01:20:47.520 --> 01:20:52.800
Uh let me be back to my name in point.

1319
01:20:54.319 --> 01:20:57.239
To your one. I'm picking this stuff up in San

1320
01:20:57.279 --> 01:20:58.640
Diego tomorrow morning.

1321
01:20:59.119 --> 01:21:03.199
I figured, and the shipping was about two handling it

1322
01:21:03.399 --> 01:21:07.680
the famous only Yeah, and look you can tell Harry

1323
01:21:07.720 --> 01:21:12.359
I meet him here with it my night. Okay, okay, usual, okay,

1324
01:21:13.239 --> 01:21:15.439
Well I haven't picked yet him. I like I was

1325
01:21:15.479 --> 01:21:23.079
telling Ah, I'm looking for a girl Londen sort of

1326
01:21:23.159 --> 01:21:30.560
tall way to make caught. You feel in here. No, no, no,

1327
01:21:30.600 --> 01:21:37.399
I haven't seen her. How about you, mister? No, no, okay, okay,

1328
01:21:40.319 --> 01:21:42.960
he must be looking for your girlfriend, Joe.

1329
01:21:43.319 --> 01:21:45.239
I'll come. He told him she wasn't.

1330
01:21:45.039 --> 01:21:48.359
Here, and I don't know. Maybe I just don't like

1331
01:21:48.399 --> 01:21:48.880
his look.

1332
01:21:49.720 --> 01:21:53.079
Yeah, I had a hunch about that, Dame.

1333
01:21:53.119 --> 01:21:55.640
I think I'm when I play it safe, canceled her

1334
01:21:55.720 --> 01:21:58.479
ride to San Diego. Yeah, yeah, maybe you're better. I

1335
01:21:58.560 --> 01:22:01.800
see him my night, have pet the time, I'll I tell.

1336
01:22:01.720 --> 01:22:05.199
Hands, I should be back here by nine if the

1337
01:22:05.359 --> 01:22:08.279
stuff is ready to pick up. I look, let me

1338
01:22:08.439 --> 01:22:10.439
use your phone whenever to call San Diego now and

1339
01:22:10.560 --> 01:22:12.279
make sure to stuff him instant to your wanner.

1340
01:22:21.840 --> 01:22:24.439
In a matter of minutes, you've completed your car to

1341
01:22:24.560 --> 01:22:27.760
San Diego. They ain't step out into the parking lot,

1342
01:22:28.680 --> 01:22:31.720
and as you walk toward your car, you win footsteps.

1343
01:22:32.159 --> 01:22:37.000
It's a quick glimpse of a running feature. By the

1344
01:22:37.079 --> 01:22:41.079
time you k your car, he's disappeared into the shadows.

1345
01:22:41.239 --> 01:22:45.000
You open your car door and get in. The girl

1346
01:22:45.159 --> 01:22:48.359
isn't fare a meal catch sight.

1347
01:22:48.279 --> 01:22:50.520
Of something on the seat beside you.

1348
01:22:50.520 --> 01:22:54.000
You red nize it instantly as the girl's handbang. It's

1349
01:22:54.039 --> 01:22:58.399
open and one glance tells you it's full of bills

1350
01:22:58.439 --> 01:23:07.720
fifties hundred one two things six oh foma. You don't

1351
01:23:07.760 --> 01:23:10.960
wait to count it all, do you, Jill. It's more

1352
01:23:11.039 --> 01:23:13.880
money than you've had in a long time. You want

1353
01:23:13.920 --> 01:23:26.039
to get away or the girl returns. Miles later along

1354
01:23:26.159 --> 01:23:30.039
the beach road, you stop, remove the bills past the ground,

1355
01:23:30.159 --> 01:23:34.720
handbag into the sea. You put counting the money five

1356
01:23:35.159 --> 01:23:39.439
thousand dollars jo Quickly, you slip it into your inside

1357
01:23:39.520 --> 01:23:43.079
coat pocket. Hurry back to the car. The night air

1358
01:23:43.239 --> 01:23:45.520
is chilly, so you decide to get your overcoats from

1359
01:23:45.560 --> 01:23:50.000
the back seat, and you open the car door. Breathe

1360
01:23:50.079 --> 01:23:55.039
inside your hand preeches in midair. Sudden here grips you

1361
01:23:55.119 --> 01:23:56.640
as you stare down at the floor.

1362
01:23:57.800 --> 01:23:58.479
The girl.

1363
01:24:01.239 --> 01:24:01.880
She's kid.

1364
01:24:19.239 --> 01:24:22.800
Tonight's twenty dollars signal gasoline book Coston Nancy Mason of

1365
01:24:22.880 --> 01:24:25.279
Los Angeles, California, for this limerick.

1366
01:24:28.319 --> 01:24:30.079
Now all gather around.

1367
01:24:29.800 --> 01:24:32.479
While I tell why the gas that I use it

1368
01:24:32.640 --> 01:24:36.800
so swell takes you farther for less the brand you

1369
01:24:36.920 --> 01:24:40.000
can get. It's fell that s I d n A

1370
01:24:40.279 --> 01:24:52.279
L no no, no gasp. Tonight's limerick writers certainly won

1371
01:24:52.319 --> 01:24:54.960
the Spelling Bee when she said, s I D N

1372
01:24:55.000 --> 01:24:56.800
A L is a gas from mileages.

1373
01:24:56.840 --> 01:24:57.359
That's well.

1374
01:24:58.159 --> 01:25:01.039
But in addition you can expect port moments. That's grand

1375
01:25:01.479 --> 01:25:05.079
because performance and mile age go hand in hand. Both

1376
01:25:05.159 --> 01:25:07.960
are the result of the extra efficiency. Today is great

1377
01:25:08.119 --> 01:25:12.199
signal gasoline extracts from your motor so there's no need

1378
01:25:12.359 --> 01:25:16.479
nowadays to choose between economy and driving pleasure. You will

1379
01:25:16.560 --> 01:25:19.399
be thankful for both when you get a thankful of

1380
01:25:19.520 --> 01:25:22.279
signals the famous go Farther gasoline.

1381
01:25:41.560 --> 01:25:44.680
The events of the past two hours seemed like a nightmare.

1382
01:25:44.760 --> 01:25:45.319
Don't think you.

1383
01:25:46.039 --> 01:25:49.840
You're leaving with the girl in the costiolane has sudden disappearance,

1384
01:25:50.039 --> 01:25:53.560
leaving her handbag containing five thousand dollars in your car.

1385
01:25:54.920 --> 01:25:57.760
Then a few minutes ago you found her dead on

1386
01:25:57.920 --> 01:26:01.039
the floor in the back of your car. For a moment,

1387
01:26:01.079 --> 01:26:04.000
you're too stun to move, just think clearly, and then

1388
01:26:04.119 --> 01:26:11.159
quickly you was jumping your car race down the highway. Ever,

1389
01:26:11.279 --> 01:26:14.680
a mile later, the panic begins to lead you. You

1390
01:26:14.800 --> 01:26:17.680
realize you misdispose of the body as soon as possible.

1391
01:26:19.239 --> 01:26:22.439
Your hands suddenly grip the wheel in terror to believe

1392
01:26:22.560 --> 01:26:26.680
you automatically, you prend down on the accelarior, and then

1393
01:26:26.720 --> 01:26:29.920
you realize your mistake. You slow down.

1394
01:26:38.800 --> 01:26:40.920
Hard to hitting it up back there, won't you Why

1395
01:26:41.159 --> 01:26:42.039
you're in a big hurry?

1396
01:26:42.279 --> 01:26:45.600
Oh well, I guess I was driving a little fast.

1397
01:26:45.279 --> 01:26:48.319
And I ought to give you a second missus. Lady,

1398
01:26:48.560 --> 01:26:51.279
there's hardly any traffic. Guy, I guess I was speeding

1399
01:26:51.319 --> 01:26:55.399
without realizing it. Well, I let it go this thing.

1400
01:26:55.520 --> 01:27:02.000
Oh thanks, Hey, some minutes. What's the matta edo Mexico? No, no,

1401
01:27:02.239 --> 01:27:02.800
san diego.

1402
01:27:02.920 --> 01:27:07.600
Sure let me feel like Okay, you struggle to remain calm,

1403
01:27:07.960 --> 01:27:10.279
get your hands for shaking. If you turn your wallet

1404
01:27:10.319 --> 01:27:13.800
over to the officers, hopefully doesn't look into the back

1405
01:27:13.880 --> 01:27:17.680
seat of your car, You wait for what seems hours

1406
01:27:17.880 --> 01:27:19.760
before he returns the wallet to you.

1407
01:27:20.039 --> 01:27:22.880
Okay, go ahead, but take it easy from now on.

1408
01:27:23.039 --> 01:27:25.800
And watch that spinometer. I'd hate to find your car

1409
01:27:25.960 --> 01:27:27.520
up the road with a dead body in it.

1410
01:27:28.239 --> 01:27:35.720
You watch the police car disappear into the gardeness and

1411
01:27:35.840 --> 01:27:39.760
you heave a sigh of relief. And what's close, wasn't

1412
01:27:39.760 --> 01:27:43.199
it you? You knock your forehead if you drive on

1413
01:27:43.399 --> 01:27:46.439
down the highway. When you find the spot you're looking for,

1414
01:27:46.640 --> 01:27:49.039
you pull over to the side of the road, carry

1415
01:27:49.079 --> 01:27:50.159
the girl's body.

1416
01:27:49.920 --> 01:27:51.279
Into the brush and leave it.

1417
01:27:52.800 --> 01:27:55.640
Then you're on the highway again for the third time

1418
01:27:55.720 --> 01:27:59.279
since you found the girl. You feel face during kover.

1419
01:27:59.399 --> 01:28:01.760
Open the glove compartment to get a pack of cigarettes.

1420
01:28:02.560 --> 01:28:04.039
Your hand comes to rest.

1421
01:28:03.920 --> 01:28:04.680
On an envelope.

1422
01:28:05.479 --> 01:28:09.640
Can take it out? Quit me with no finger. The

1423
01:28:09.720 --> 01:28:14.159
boat is content, and besides it's a hotel. Set your

1424
01:28:14.239 --> 01:28:17.880
puzzle lines because you're curious too, But you realize you

1425
01:28:18.000 --> 01:28:21.279
can't take any more chances. You crumple the envelope in

1426
01:28:21.319 --> 01:28:24.840
your hand, frosted out the car window. Drive on your

1427
01:28:24.920 --> 01:28:35.479
hotel in San Diego. Have a reservation test.

1428
01:28:35.680 --> 01:28:38.600
Yeah, I phoned from Los Angeles. Kennon's the name Joe Kennon.

1429
01:28:38.800 --> 01:28:40.680
Oh yes, mister Kennon. I put you in the room

1430
01:28:40.720 --> 01:28:43.199
three o'w A nice room. I'll show you like it.

1431
01:28:43.880 --> 01:28:44.720
You'll find the regista.

1432
01:28:46.119 --> 01:28:48.239
There's a quiet room. Isn't the can use sleep?

1433
01:28:48.439 --> 01:28:48.560
Oh?

1434
01:28:48.600 --> 01:28:51.760
It is quieter. Had a tiring trip, you can say

1435
01:28:51.800 --> 01:28:52.239
that again.

1436
01:28:53.640 --> 01:28:56.520
Night driving tires me out completely. I'm that trip from

1437
01:28:56.560 --> 01:29:00.840
Los Angeles down here. Well, it's so dull. Did I

1438
01:29:00.960 --> 01:29:01.239
find it?

1439
01:29:01.319 --> 01:29:01.479
Tell?

1440
01:29:01.520 --> 01:29:02.199
Don't you go?

1441
01:29:04.239 --> 01:29:05.079
And not always?

1442
01:29:05.199 --> 01:29:18.239
No news leap until afternoon then awake, completely refreshed, unworried,

1443
01:29:18.800 --> 01:29:23.319
the addressed, Go downstairs, buy a newspaper. It's all there

1444
01:29:23.479 --> 01:29:26.520
it Miss Joe. The story of the murder, the finding

1445
01:29:26.600 --> 01:29:29.720
of the dead girl's body by the highway, strangled to death.

1446
01:29:30.560 --> 01:29:35.960
Her name Mary Cotney. We wander into the hotel coffee shop,

1447
01:29:36.079 --> 01:29:37.680
read the table in the corner.

1448
01:29:37.920 --> 01:29:38.359
Read on.

1449
01:29:39.439 --> 01:29:43.239
According to Giles Winthrop, well known Los Angeles thought feelers.

1450
01:29:43.560 --> 01:29:45.840
Ms Cotney had been in secretary for the past year.

1451
01:29:47.199 --> 01:29:49.600
The winter bought on form police and ms Cottney had

1452
01:29:49.680 --> 01:29:53.359
left his office two days ago and had failed to return.

1453
01:29:54.680 --> 01:29:55.079
Last night.

1454
01:29:55.159 --> 01:29:57.600
He had discovered she had taken five thousand dollars from

1455
01:29:57.720 --> 01:29:58.359
office space.

1456
01:30:00.520 --> 01:30:08.000
Oh but it's feet taken. No, no, it's your Yeah,

1457
01:30:09.079 --> 01:30:12.119
you're there, your whole man who slides into the seat

1458
01:30:12.119 --> 01:30:15.399
across the table from you, it's the same man who

1459
01:30:15.520 --> 01:30:18.319
came into the bar last night in Los Angeles, the

1460
01:30:18.439 --> 01:30:20.800
one who asked you if you've seen the tall blonde

1461
01:30:20.840 --> 01:30:23.760
in the mean coot, the murdered girl the papers have

1462
01:30:23.920 --> 01:30:29.239
identified as married content. You drank that five grand yet him,

1463
01:30:30.560 --> 01:30:32.680
I don't believe I follow you show your dough chump.

1464
01:30:33.600 --> 01:30:35.439
I try to sell me. You haven't got the door.

1465
01:30:35.439 --> 01:30:37.399
I saw you pick up the name Pantacs. You left

1466
01:30:37.439 --> 01:30:38.079
it in your car.

1467
01:30:38.319 --> 01:30:39.520
I love beat it, will you. I don't know what

1468
01:30:39.600 --> 01:30:40.960
you're talking even all about.

1469
01:30:40.760 --> 01:30:41.479
It in the papers.

1470
01:30:41.600 --> 01:30:41.800
Huh.

1471
01:30:42.680 --> 01:30:44.239
You see where they got your description?

1472
01:30:45.279 --> 01:30:46.479
My description? Yeah?

1473
01:30:47.520 --> 01:30:52.720
Here, allow me to see your paper. Yeah. Police report

1474
01:30:52.840 --> 01:30:54.760
no trace of the money was found on the girl's

1475
01:30:54.840 --> 01:30:59.039
body for here to missus. Ultrom Grims eleven thirty four

1476
01:30:59.159 --> 01:31:03.640
pot drive along Beach identified Miss Gottney from newspaper photographs

1477
01:31:03.640 --> 01:31:05.720
as the same woman who asked them for a ride

1478
01:31:05.880 --> 01:31:08.800
last night in a bar on the outskirtch of Los Angeles.

1479
01:31:09.960 --> 01:31:13.279
The informed policeman overheard Miss Cottney except the man's offered

1480
01:31:13.319 --> 01:31:17.359
a driver to San Diego. The man is described as

1481
01:31:17.479 --> 01:31:21.399
dark head, about thirty years old, attired in a light

1482
01:31:21.520 --> 01:31:26.760
sports coat and gray trousers. Curt enough, chump is a

1483
01:31:26.800 --> 01:31:27.399
little more.

1484
01:31:28.319 --> 01:31:28.840
I've heard that.

1485
01:31:30.520 --> 01:31:33.399
I see you were kind of a tough spot. Now,

1486
01:31:33.439 --> 01:31:35.239
why don't you come along with me? Say up to

1487
01:31:35.319 --> 01:31:38.640
my room where we can talk this over, Chump, I

1488
01:31:38.680 --> 01:31:41.239
should have You wouldn't want me to tip off the cups, would.

1489
01:31:42.840 --> 01:31:44.720
Okay, that's off stairs.

1490
01:31:51.880 --> 01:31:54.640
You'd forgotten about the couple sitting in the back boot

1491
01:31:54.680 --> 01:31:57.800
of the bar last night, hadn't you Joe now on

1492
01:31:57.920 --> 01:32:00.279
this man's sitting across from you want to dunk food

1493
01:32:00.319 --> 01:32:03.439
thing over? You follow after him as he needs the

1494
01:32:03.479 --> 01:32:07.359
coffee shop. You're certain he's Marry Contney's murderer. Then he

1495
01:32:07.680 --> 01:32:09.600
was the man you saw running away from your car

1496
01:32:09.800 --> 01:32:11.640
last night while it was posted in the lot next

1497
01:32:11.680 --> 01:32:15.439
to the Linden Bar. If your sudden appearance prevented him

1498
01:32:15.439 --> 01:32:19.600
from getting the handbag containing the five thousand dollars, you

1499
01:32:19.760 --> 01:32:23.199
pick things paper back into your pocket without finishing the audience.

1500
01:32:24.920 --> 01:32:27.399
Upstairs in a man's room, he takes a gun from

1501
01:32:27.439 --> 01:32:30.640
his pocket, places it on the table with an easy rout. Ouck,

1502
01:32:30.720 --> 01:32:33.880
get chum, let's get down of business. I know you've

1503
01:32:33.920 --> 01:32:37.199
got the five grand you can keep at chicken. See

1504
01:32:38.199 --> 01:32:39.840
what I'm interested in is a package?

1505
01:32:40.520 --> 01:32:40.960
Package?

1506
01:32:41.760 --> 01:32:44.720
Got package? Mary Cottony had it with her, A painting,

1507
01:32:45.119 --> 01:32:47.359
an original. Don Thatddie. It's worth one hundred frands. I

1508
01:32:47.399 --> 01:32:48.039
don't know a thing.

1509
01:32:48.079 --> 01:32:49.359
A pottet. I never even heard of it.

1510
01:32:49.479 --> 01:32:52.760
Lett. I'll get back to you in a minute, shum

1511
01:32:52.840 --> 01:32:55.720
and call it bax. Second, while I'm taking it, you

1512
01:32:55.840 --> 01:33:02.800
better remember where you're put back painting. Yeah, oh yeah,

1513
01:33:02.920 --> 01:33:08.399
mister Robertson, here it is much sure, sure, everything is said.

1514
01:33:08.399 --> 01:33:12.199
I'll have the painting, I promise God. Yet it didn't.

1515
01:33:12.239 --> 01:33:16.720
I the interruption gives you time to think with Joe,

1516
01:33:17.439 --> 01:33:20.920
and suddenly you remember something. The envelope with the name

1517
01:33:21.039 --> 01:33:24.359
Anne Whitney written on the envelope you pounded the glove

1518
01:33:24.439 --> 01:33:29.720
compartment of your car. You're certainly contained a hotel. No

1519
01:33:29.880 --> 01:33:32.479
wonder what they did though, Mary Courtney was kneeling into

1520
01:33:32.520 --> 01:33:36.039
an accomplice named Anne Whitney. Whether the key has any

1521
01:33:36.079 --> 01:33:40.039
connection with the valuable painting, sure, mister Robert. Sure, tomorrow

1522
01:33:40.119 --> 01:33:45.000
morning at ten. All, look, since we've never met, you

1523
01:33:45.119 --> 01:33:47.079
better pick the painting up here at my hotel room.

1524
01:33:47.079 --> 01:33:51.319
It's a lot of simple that way. Okay, see you tomorrow.

1525
01:33:54.279 --> 01:33:55.600
I shall I get back to you.

1526
01:33:55.760 --> 01:33:55.920
Huh.

1527
01:33:55.960 --> 01:33:57.960
I told you before, I don't know anything about a painting.

1528
01:33:58.039 --> 01:34:01.600
But yes, but I did find an envelope in the

1529
01:34:01.680 --> 01:34:04.199
car and it over. I didn't want any evidence around

1530
01:34:04.199 --> 01:34:05.680
after I got rid of the girl's body, so I

1531
01:34:05.720 --> 01:34:06.640
threw the envelope away.

1532
01:34:06.680 --> 01:34:09.279
And you didn't even know it was a hotelthy, I

1533
01:34:09.399 --> 01:34:12.760
couldn't be mistaken. I could feel with see you tossed

1534
01:34:12.760 --> 01:34:14.520
it away. I can find it again. I know where

1535
01:34:14.520 --> 01:34:19.319
I throw it. All right, jump, let's go. I hope

1536
01:34:19.359 --> 01:34:29.279
for your sake you'll find that key and no once more.

1537
01:34:29.479 --> 01:34:32.960
Though you're along the highway, it's time driving the noise

1538
01:34:33.640 --> 01:34:35.880
back toward the place where you tossed the envelope out

1539
01:34:35.920 --> 01:34:39.159
your car window, and your plan is beginning to take

1540
01:34:39.239 --> 01:34:42.600
shape in your mind. You glance at the man sitting

1541
01:34:42.680 --> 01:34:44.800
beside you been down at the gun in his hands

1542
01:34:45.000 --> 01:34:51.640
pointed directly at you. He's not taking any chance. You

1543
01:34:51.880 --> 01:34:54.399
drive carefully, chump, and in the right direction.

1544
01:34:56.479 --> 01:34:59.079
Hey, you don't mind clearing up something to me?

1545
01:34:59.199 --> 01:35:00.319
Do you what?

1546
01:35:01.359 --> 01:35:01.960
I just killed?

1547
01:35:02.000 --> 01:35:05.399
Mary cut me? I didn't you wait till she turned

1548
01:35:05.399 --> 01:35:06.560
the painting over before you?

1549
01:35:08.000 --> 01:35:08.119
Uh?

1550
01:35:08.760 --> 01:35:11.479
I didn't intend to kill her. I was only trying

1551
01:35:11.479 --> 01:35:14.760
to scare her. But I I guess I pressed just

1552
01:35:14.840 --> 01:35:19.039
a little too hot. Yeah, and she grabbed the painting

1553
01:35:19.039 --> 01:35:21.600
and duck out of me. He's got to contact Roberts

1554
01:35:21.600 --> 01:35:23.039
herself and cut me out of my share of the

1555
01:35:23.079 --> 01:35:27.399
fifty grand. Fifty grand, that's right. And now that I've

1556
01:35:27.439 --> 01:35:29.720
filled you in under the tails, let's keep the conversation

1557
01:35:29.840 --> 01:35:41.079
at a minimum. Huh sure suit me? Oh yeah, it

1558
01:35:41.239 --> 01:35:43.800
suits you, doesn't it, Joe? You want the time to

1559
01:35:43.880 --> 01:35:47.720
think things out. Shortly before night saw you within a

1560
01:35:47.800 --> 01:35:50.079
few miles from the place where you dropped the envelope.

1561
01:35:50.680 --> 01:35:52.840
And then up ahead you see a side road. You

1562
01:35:53.000 --> 01:35:57.119
slow down, you turn your car into it. What you

1563
01:35:57.119 --> 01:35:59.239
said you thought that envelope off the highway? I did

1564
01:36:00.119 --> 01:36:00.680
part from here.

1565
01:36:01.439 --> 01:36:03.880
I'd always better park the car somewhere along here under

1566
01:36:03.880 --> 01:36:05.079
the trees while we look for it.

1567
01:36:05.520 --> 01:36:11.319
All right, got the car, sure, sure, And you slag

1568
01:36:11.399 --> 01:36:14.119
on the brake so sudden stops hoosing against the windshield.

1569
01:36:14.600 --> 01:36:17.800
An old trick, Joe, but it works. The yard stuns

1570
01:36:17.880 --> 01:36:19.840
him for an instant. The gun in his hand putters

1571
01:36:19.880 --> 01:36:22.159
to the floor. Quickly, you scoop it up.

1572
01:36:22.359 --> 01:36:25.720
Okay, get out and start walking, I said, start walking

1573
01:36:26.000 --> 01:36:27.199
over there under the trees.

1574
01:36:30.920 --> 01:36:34.560
Hell, look, chump, But let's let's talk this over half.

1575
01:36:34.399 --> 01:36:35.760
And don't talk about keep moving.

1576
01:36:35.960 --> 01:36:37.239
I've got you in on the fifty grand.

1577
01:36:37.279 --> 01:36:37.760
We'll split it.

1578
01:36:39.079 --> 01:36:41.920
I want a whole fifty grand for myself. You let

1579
01:36:41.960 --> 01:36:42.600
her get away with it.

1580
01:36:42.800 --> 01:36:45.600
That's where you're wrong. I heard to tell this guy

1581
01:36:45.760 --> 01:36:48.239
Roberts over the phone to drop into your hotel room tomorrow.

1582
01:36:48.439 --> 01:36:50.319
So what so he doesn't know what you look like.

1583
01:36:51.119 --> 01:36:53.600
I'll be there when he shows up. I'll turn the

1584
01:36:53.680 --> 01:36:54.439
painting over and.

1585
01:36:54.760 --> 01:36:58.520
You know you'll find a painting a key busty at

1586
01:36:58.560 --> 01:37:02.159
hotel here for away last night. You've got a hurtry

1587
01:37:02.199 --> 01:37:02.600
to leave me.

1588
01:37:02.720 --> 01:37:04.520
Right to it? All right?

1589
01:37:04.600 --> 01:37:04.640
This?

1590
01:37:05.760 --> 01:37:09.159
Yeah? Alright? So well, what are you game by popping

1591
01:37:09.239 --> 01:37:09.720
me off here?

1592
01:37:09.800 --> 01:37:12.960
Too dangerous to be floating around in the loose. You

1593
01:37:13.039 --> 01:37:16.239
know too much about me. You might tip off the cup.

1594
01:37:17.399 --> 01:37:27.399
Sorry, chum. You wipe the gun three your fingerprints, drop

1595
01:37:27.479 --> 01:37:29.760
it on the ground next to the body, and hurry

1596
01:37:29.800 --> 01:37:32.960
to your car. You drive back to the highway, find

1597
01:37:33.000 --> 01:37:36.239
the spot where you drop the envelope and pass. You've

1598
01:37:36.239 --> 01:37:39.359
got to find it, Joe, before nightfall, and that doesn't

1599
01:37:39.359 --> 01:37:43.199
give you much time. You look around, walk up the

1600
01:37:43.279 --> 01:37:46.159
side of the road for several hundred feet and things

1601
01:37:46.199 --> 01:37:48.520
you see. It's the envelope A drinks to end with me.

1602
01:37:50.279 --> 01:37:51.039
You rip it open.

1603
01:37:52.439 --> 01:37:54.760
It is a hotel v Joe, and.

1604
01:37:54.880 --> 01:37:57.000
You're sure what you read on the tab gives you

1605
01:37:57.119 --> 01:38:10.800
the answer to everything. Any hotel, Los Angeles. Early that evening,

1606
01:38:10.880 --> 01:38:13.039
you stroll into the lobby of the City Hotel in

1607
01:38:13.119 --> 01:38:16.640
Los Angeles. Buy a paper and drop into a chair

1608
01:38:16.760 --> 01:38:20.439
near the stairway. You glance at the familiar headlines of

1609
01:38:20.520 --> 01:38:23.960
the Marry Cotney murder, and then sit back and pretend

1610
01:38:24.159 --> 01:38:28.199
to read. But you don't read beyond the headlines. Do

1611
01:38:28.359 --> 01:38:31.600
your joe instead. You're on the alert. Your eyes sweep

1612
01:38:31.640 --> 01:38:33.800
the lobby from one end to the other. You've got

1613
01:38:33.920 --> 01:38:37.359
to play it safe. You smile as you take out

1614
01:38:37.399 --> 01:38:40.640
the house detective lounging against the desk. You're certain the

1615
01:38:40.720 --> 01:38:43.279
murder of Mary Cotney is the least of his worries.

1616
01:38:44.640 --> 01:38:46.520
You've got to be sure off one thing before you

1617
01:38:46.600 --> 01:38:50.760
go upstairs and roll seven eleven is really and Whitney's room.

1618
01:38:51.960 --> 01:38:53.640
You hurry out of the lobby and into the drug

1619
01:38:53.680 --> 01:38:56.439
store on the corner, or you make a phone call.

1620
01:39:00.319 --> 01:39:03.119
I'd like to sink with miss Ann Whitney, please room

1621
01:39:03.199 --> 01:39:03.800
seven to eleven.

1622
01:39:15.960 --> 01:39:17.680
And I'm sorry she got.

1623
01:39:19.840 --> 01:39:22.800
No no, tell me?

1624
01:39:22.880 --> 01:39:24.199
Do you have any idea when she'll be in?

1625
01:39:24.640 --> 01:39:25.800
Oh, she didn't leave any way.

1626
01:39:26.560 --> 01:39:29.880
I'm sorry. I'm not sorry baby one bit.

1627
01:39:42.000 --> 01:39:44.279
If you had to wear heavy winter clothes right on

1628
01:39:44.399 --> 01:39:47.479
through spring, you wouldn't feel very peppy, would you, Well,

1629
01:39:47.600 --> 01:39:50.680
that's just how your car feels about tired old winter

1630
01:39:50.840 --> 01:39:54.439
motor oil and gear loub Now that spring is here, Yes,

1631
01:39:54.600 --> 01:39:56.600
if you want to put spring into your driving, it's

1632
01:39:56.680 --> 01:39:58.800
high time you were treating your car to a spring

1633
01:39:59.039 --> 01:40:03.119
changeover at a signal service station. First step is to

1634
01:40:03.199 --> 01:40:07.039
drain your motor and refill with signal Premium compound at

1635
01:40:07.119 --> 01:40:10.560
motor oil, the extra duty signal oil that does so

1636
01:40:10.880 --> 01:40:14.880
much more than just lubricate. Next step is fresh signal

1637
01:40:14.960 --> 01:40:18.600
gear loube for transmission and differential, and a signal double

1638
01:40:18.720 --> 01:40:22.239
checked lubrication for the chassie. At the same time, your

1639
01:40:22.319 --> 01:40:24.399
signal dealer will be glad to check those other points

1640
01:40:24.439 --> 01:40:27.520
that need attention every five or ten thousand miles, such

1641
01:40:27.560 --> 01:40:31.720
as front wheel bearings, oil filter, or air cleaner. Hey,

1642
01:40:31.880 --> 01:40:34.760
a car just can't help feeling peppier after a spring

1643
01:40:34.880 --> 01:40:39.319
tonic like this, So for extra driving pleasure all summer,

1644
01:40:39.880 --> 01:40:44.399
see your signal dealer this week for a signal spring changeover.

1645
01:40:56.560 --> 01:40:58.199
It's working perfectly.

1646
01:40:57.880 --> 01:40:58.119
Isn't it.

1647
01:40:58.279 --> 01:41:01.199
Joe, and your certain in your pocket to sea the

1648
01:41:01.239 --> 01:41:04.399
Anne Whitney's rooms will lead you to the painting worth

1649
01:41:04.479 --> 01:41:07.920
fifty thousand dollars and you won't have to share any

1650
01:41:07.960 --> 01:41:12.239
of it with Mary Cotney's murderer. He's dead. You'll killed him,

1651
01:41:12.920 --> 01:41:15.760
and you're sure no one can connect you with his dead.

1652
01:41:16.920 --> 01:41:19.039
And now you've only to pick up the painting returned

1653
01:41:19.079 --> 01:41:21.359
to San Diego, turn it over to mister Roberts, and

1654
01:41:21.479 --> 01:41:25.520
receive the money. You stroll back to the hotel casually.

1655
01:41:26.239 --> 01:41:28.840
Miss Whitney isn't in her room, the hotel operator said,

1656
01:41:29.560 --> 01:41:32.680
But you're in no hurry, are you? You know she'll

1657
01:41:32.760 --> 01:41:38.119
never return because she's dead. It's all clear, as Mitchoe,

1658
01:41:38.720 --> 01:41:41.479
you're certain is when Mary Cotney decided to double cross

1659
01:41:41.520 --> 01:41:45.439
her partner Merkell, she registered as Anne Whitney and hid

1660
01:41:45.479 --> 01:41:49.119
the painting in hotel rooms seven eleven. You move across

1661
01:41:49.159 --> 01:41:52.880
the hotel lobby, then up the stairs. Finally at the

1662
01:41:52.960 --> 01:41:55.520
door to room seven eleven, you stripped the key into

1663
01:41:55.560 --> 01:42:02.159
the rocks. You turn it, step inside. Everything is going perfectly,

1664
01:42:02.279 --> 01:42:05.119
isn't this, Joe? It could take only a few moments

1665
01:42:05.159 --> 01:42:09.199
to find the painting. You turn on the lights. There's

1666
01:42:09.359 --> 01:42:11.079
fighting what you came for? Fellow?

1667
01:42:11.640 --> 01:42:13.239
Who are you? Attendant?

1668
01:42:13.279 --> 01:42:18.199
Storm and Amoside Cargan manrews oh Well it must become mistaken.

1669
01:42:18.279 --> 01:42:21.920
Look at this key, Well, I I kind of founded

1670
01:42:22.039 --> 01:42:24.600
you made a bad move coming here, and he've been

1671
01:42:24.680 --> 01:42:26.359
waiting for someone to show up waiting.

1672
01:42:27.159 --> 01:42:27.960
I don't know what you mean.

1673
01:42:28.039 --> 01:42:31.279
I girl, and Mary Cottney was murdered last night. The

1674
01:42:31.359 --> 01:42:33.720
hotel clerk here identified her is a girl who checked

1675
01:42:33.760 --> 01:42:36.600
into this room several days ago under the name of

1676
01:42:36.640 --> 01:42:37.960
Ann Whitney's.

1677
01:42:37.439 --> 01:42:39.279
On that look, I don't know what this is all about.

1678
01:42:39.359 --> 01:42:41.439
I also told us the girl took the key to

1679
01:42:41.520 --> 01:42:42.039
this room.

1680
01:42:41.960 --> 01:42:45.239
With her when she left. When we found the stolen.

1681
01:42:44.960 --> 01:42:47.399
Painting here, we had a hunch that Mary Cottney's killer

1682
01:42:47.479 --> 01:42:50.399
would have her key to seven to eleven, and our

1683
01:42:50.479 --> 01:42:51.119
hunch was right.

1684
01:42:51.680 --> 01:42:52.000
He did.

1685
01:42:52.159 --> 01:42:54.880
Wait a minute, I told you I found that arrest

1686
01:42:54.960 --> 01:42:56.720
for the murder of Mary Cottony, But I didn't kill

1687
01:42:56.800 --> 01:42:57.399
Mary Cottony.

1688
01:42:58.600 --> 01:43:03.840
Hey not Wait a minute. Yeah, there's a lot of

1689
01:43:03.920 --> 01:43:05.359
money to be carrying around.

1690
01:43:05.239 --> 01:43:11.039
And let's see that money in mm hmmmm, let's clinches it.

1691
01:43:11.760 --> 01:43:14.359
You killed Mary cotton No, I didn't. Oh, yes, you did.

1692
01:43:15.000 --> 01:43:18.920
The serial numbers of these bills, check your number. That's right,

1693
01:43:19.279 --> 01:43:21.520
mister Winstor furnished us with the serial numbers of the

1694
01:43:21.560 --> 01:43:24.720
bill's Mary Cottey stole from him. It tells all about

1695
01:43:24.760 --> 01:43:26.880
it right on the front page of that newspaper you're carrying.

1696
01:43:27.520 --> 01:43:29.279
You should have read it before you walked in on it.

1697
01:43:30.399 --> 01:43:31.199
Come on, let's go.

1698
01:43:50.680 --> 01:43:54.079
Let that whistle be your signal of the Signal Oil program.

1699
01:43:54.279 --> 01:43:57.760
The Whistler et Sunday night at the same time talk

1700
01:43:57.800 --> 01:44:00.319
to you by the Signal Oil Company. Marketers are Signal

1701
01:44:00.359 --> 01:44:05.000
Gasoline and Motor oil and fine automotive accessories. To all

1702
01:44:05.079 --> 01:44:07.600
you friends who have been sending in limericks, Signal has

1703
01:44:07.640 --> 01:44:10.319
asked me to say thanks for the spirit in which

1704
01:44:10.359 --> 01:44:13.439
you've played the game. Next Sunday is the last time

1705
01:44:13.520 --> 01:44:16.479
limericks will be used on the Whistler, because Signal will

1706
01:44:16.520 --> 01:44:19.479
soon announce something new and important that you will all

1707
01:44:19.680 --> 01:44:27.199
be interested in. Read it in Tonight's story where Gerald Moore,

1708
01:44:27.399 --> 01:44:31.319
Francis Robinson, and Mary Dobkins. The Whistler was produced and

1709
01:44:31.399 --> 01:44:34.560
directed by George w Allen, with story by Edward Bludworth,

1710
01:44:34.760 --> 01:44:37.720
music by Wilbur Hat, and was transmitted to our troops

1711
01:44:37.720 --> 01:44:41.039
overseas by the Armed Forces Radio Service. The Whistler is

1712
01:44:41.199 --> 01:44:43.960
entirely fictional, and all characters portrayed on the Whissler are

1713
01:44:44.000 --> 01:44:47.359
also fictional. Any similarity of names or resemblance to persons

1714
01:44:47.439 --> 01:44:49.359
living or dead is purely coincidental.

1715
01:44:52.880 --> 01:44:59.399
My dear, you do seem a bit peak it. Take

1716
01:44:59.479 --> 01:45:05.880
a deep breath with me, well, sort of. It's all right.

1717
01:45:07.000 --> 01:45:11.520
We're here to enjoy ourselves, not just in this room,

1718
01:45:11.920 --> 01:45:16.479
in each other's company, but in the broadest of senses.

1719
01:45:18.479 --> 01:45:24.079
Don't let fear hold you back. Don't let doubt keep

1720
01:45:24.159 --> 01:45:30.479
you from seeing what you truly want. Don't allow anything

1721
01:45:30.680 --> 01:45:36.359
to keep you away from your dreams or from the

1722
01:45:36.520 --> 01:45:37.479
Red Mark.

1723
01:45:41.399 --> 01:45:46.880
Tired of the everyday routine, ever dream of a life

1724
01:45:47.039 --> 01:45:51.680
of romantic adventure, want to get away from it all?

1725
01:45:52.800 --> 01:46:01.520
We offer you escape, escape designed to free you from

1726
01:46:01.560 --> 01:46:04.079
the four walls of to day for a half hour

1727
01:46:04.159 --> 01:46:05.680
of high adventure.

1728
01:46:08.640 --> 01:46:09.039
To night.

1729
01:46:09.680 --> 01:46:13.840
We escape to the prison island of New Caledonia and

1730
01:46:14.039 --> 01:46:18.359
to the murderous conflict between one of the prisoners and

1731
01:46:18.520 --> 01:46:25.840
the monstrous Monsieur Deneux official executioner. As John Russell tells

1732
01:46:25.920 --> 01:46:30.479
it in his terrifying story The Red Mark.

1733
01:46:41.760 --> 01:46:47.199
We breathe in, breathe out, inhale and exhale, and we

1734
01:46:47.279 --> 01:46:52.840
are therefore considered officially as living privately, however, and always

1735
01:46:52.920 --> 01:46:57.119
with a snarl deep in our throats, we call ourselves

1736
01:46:57.239 --> 01:47:02.199
the living dead. We sleep without resting, wake without desire,

1737
01:47:02.319 --> 01:47:07.000
reat without pleasure, and work without hope. Some of us

1738
01:47:07.039 --> 01:47:11.000
work in the mine, summon the copra sheds. I myself

1739
01:47:11.039 --> 01:47:14.000
am a barber. But all of us wear the same

1740
01:47:14.159 --> 01:47:18.279
straw sandals and the same rough canvas jackets. And we

1741
01:47:18.399 --> 01:47:21.239
are never allowed to forget that this is the penal

1742
01:47:21.439 --> 01:47:27.520
colony of New Caledonia, we are convicts, and that France

1743
01:47:27.680 --> 01:47:28.880
is on the other side of the world.

1744
01:47:29.680 --> 01:47:30.399
Hello, do you mind?

1745
01:47:30.600 --> 01:47:33.279
Well, I'll be sure. You startled me.

1746
01:47:33.399 --> 01:47:34.760
I didn't hear you come in.

1747
01:47:35.520 --> 01:47:36.319
You were a daydream.

1748
01:47:36.560 --> 01:47:38.159
Ah, you know how it is.

1749
01:47:38.479 --> 01:47:40.399
I know how it is for you, But do you

1750
01:47:40.560 --> 01:47:42.720
mind for me? The dreams are at an end. My

1751
01:47:42.840 --> 01:47:45.199
life is a convict is an You have your ticket home?

1752
01:47:45.439 --> 01:47:47.439
Of course I have my ticket. I've only eight more

1753
01:47:47.479 --> 01:47:50.640
days to go. Eight days, three weeks on the ship

1754
01:47:50.720 --> 01:47:58.399
and then France, Freedom, wine, music, the theater up. Oh, sorry,

1755
01:47:58.439 --> 01:47:58.840
do you mine?

1756
01:48:00.680 --> 01:48:04.279
You are my friend, my very good friend, but don't

1757
01:48:04.399 --> 01:48:05.640
talk to me about France.

1758
01:48:05.760 --> 01:48:06.479
I'm really sorry.

1759
01:48:06.560 --> 01:48:08.680
You're leaving in eight days, but I will be here

1760
01:48:08.800 --> 01:48:14.520
for thirteen more years. I know, I assume you wish

1761
01:48:14.600 --> 01:48:16.920
to be shaved. If you'd be so kind, be seated.

1762
01:48:17.800 --> 01:48:22.479
Ah uh uh, do my, look right out the window

1763
01:48:22.520 --> 01:48:23.920
there coming across the compound.

1764
01:48:24.479 --> 01:48:28.560
Ah, yes, Monsieur don't know, and his ugly little assistant

1765
01:48:28.640 --> 01:48:31.600
bomb beast the vultures.

1766
01:48:33.079 --> 01:48:35.720
That's no matter for concern. If one has a prison,

1767
01:48:35.760 --> 01:48:36.960
one must have an executioner.

1768
01:48:37.520 --> 01:48:40.600
Oh carefu that so Monsieur don't know is neither flesh

1769
01:48:40.640 --> 01:48:43.960
nor fowl, neither a convict or an official master of

1770
01:48:44.000 --> 01:48:44.760
the guillotine.

1771
01:48:44.800 --> 01:48:47.720
He's a dog, a pig, but such easy work. If

1772
01:48:47.760 --> 01:48:50.760
one has a strong stomach for merely pulling the cord

1773
01:48:50.800 --> 01:48:52.800
on the guillotine only three or four times a year,

1774
01:48:52.840 --> 01:48:55.960
he's permitted a house of his own, even a wife.

1775
01:48:56.079 --> 01:48:58.039
He's a corpse. He should be buried with a steak

1776
01:48:58.079 --> 01:48:58.680
through his heart.

1777
01:48:58.760 --> 01:48:59.439
I hate him.

1778
01:49:00.680 --> 01:49:01.600
Oh ignore him.

1779
01:49:01.600 --> 01:49:03.239
He's nothing, an old bag of bones.

1780
01:49:03.279 --> 01:49:05.000
He's the devil himself, devil.

1781
01:49:05.079 --> 01:49:08.079
Eh do my, if he were the devil, he would

1782
01:49:08.119 --> 01:49:10.479
not be the stupid fool that he is. Ignore him,

1783
01:49:10.479 --> 01:49:11.119
I tell you I do.

1784
01:49:11.640 --> 01:49:15.920
Ignore himn It can't be done careful with that razor.

1785
01:49:16.079 --> 01:49:18.880
Hah ah, I'm sorry, Are you trying to become an

1786
01:49:18.880 --> 01:49:19.920
executioner yourself?

1787
01:49:22.640 --> 01:49:26.000
Be sure there's something you know about monsieur, do not

1788
01:49:26.119 --> 01:49:26.880
tell me what it is?

1789
01:49:27.560 --> 01:49:28.159
Look do mine?

1790
01:49:28.880 --> 01:49:32.119
You will say nothing until next week, until I've sailed nothing.

1791
01:49:32.159 --> 01:49:34.760
I swear it all right, I trust you.

1792
01:49:36.079 --> 01:49:36.760
You know his wife?

1793
01:49:36.800 --> 01:49:37.119
Of course?

1794
01:49:37.760 --> 01:49:40.119
You mean that little girl, yes, from the fishing village

1795
01:49:40.159 --> 01:49:41.840
down the coast, Zilly your name is?

1796
01:49:42.239 --> 01:49:42.800
What about her?

1797
01:49:43.439 --> 01:49:44.840
Do you not agree that she's beautiful?

1798
01:49:45.239 --> 01:49:46.800
That marriage is a sacrilege?

1799
01:49:46.800 --> 01:49:50.319
True, but you can't blame her. Monsieur de new bought

1800
01:49:50.359 --> 01:49:52.600
her from her family's disgusting of course.

1801
01:49:53.399 --> 01:49:54.560
But is she not beautiful?

1802
01:49:55.199 --> 01:49:57.479
I am, I don't pretend to be a judge of

1803
01:49:57.560 --> 01:49:58.079
these things.

1804
01:49:58.279 --> 01:50:00.399
You know she is? Well? What what about her?

1805
01:50:01.520 --> 01:50:02.079
You ask?

1806
01:50:02.239 --> 01:50:03.800
Do I have my tickets to France?

1807
01:50:04.680 --> 01:50:04.880
Yes?

1808
01:50:05.680 --> 01:50:07.760
Yes, but not just one. More than that, I have

1809
01:50:07.880 --> 01:50:10.319
two tickets two. Zelli is going with me?

1810
01:50:11.520 --> 01:50:12.840
Be sure you're out of your mind?

1811
01:50:12.920 --> 01:50:15.439
No, but I would be if I left here without her.

1812
01:50:15.840 --> 01:50:17.640
But can you not imagine what that man will do

1813
01:50:17.760 --> 01:50:17.960
to you?

1814
01:50:18.159 --> 01:50:20.399
He will do nothing because he knows nothing. He's a

1815
01:50:20.479 --> 01:50:21.199
stupid fool.

1816
01:50:21.239 --> 01:50:24.279
But my friend, you are young and you've forgotten France, Paris,

1817
01:50:24.359 --> 01:50:27.159
the world outside is full of beautiful women. That it's

1818
01:50:27.239 --> 01:50:29.760
foolish to run this risk for Zelie when there will

1819
01:50:29.800 --> 01:50:30.520
be others waiting.

1820
01:50:30.560 --> 01:50:31.199
What do mind?

1821
01:50:32.119 --> 01:50:36.000
I love her, you love her, and she loves me.

1822
01:50:37.600 --> 01:50:39.640
I'll try to make her happy, make her forget. She's

1823
01:50:39.720 --> 01:50:42.239
never been happy to mine, and she's a girl who

1824
01:50:42.279 --> 01:50:46.640
ought to be very, very happy all the time. Now,

1825
01:50:46.680 --> 01:50:49.039
if your hand is steady again, get on with my shave,

1826
01:50:49.079 --> 01:50:49.319
will you.

1827
01:50:55.640 --> 01:50:58.680
I saw that my little friend Bijo was in dead earnest,

1828
01:50:59.199 --> 01:51:01.359
right or wrong. Foolish as he might be, he meant

1829
01:51:01.399 --> 01:51:05.439
every word he'd said, And suddenly I realized how much

1830
01:51:05.479 --> 01:51:08.199
alike they were, he and Zelli, the child bride of

1831
01:51:08.279 --> 01:51:13.079
the executioner. They were both small and slim, with lively

1832
01:51:13.199 --> 01:51:17.439
eyes and mouths that were quick with laughter. Why they

1833
01:51:17.479 --> 01:51:22.279
even looked alike? Across the compound, d'uneaux was talking with

1834
01:51:22.439 --> 01:51:26.000
his jackal of his servant as they promenaded a gaunt

1835
01:51:26.239 --> 01:51:30.000
black monster. He was the only convict among us who

1836
01:51:30.119 --> 01:51:33.880
never wore the shapeless gray canvas clothes. I glanced at

1837
01:51:33.880 --> 01:51:35.239
the two of them now and then as I went

1838
01:51:35.279 --> 01:51:39.319
on shaving, Bijore, wondering what they talked about. But they

1839
01:51:39.560 --> 01:51:42.199
dared to talk about in the bright clean light of

1840
01:51:42.279 --> 01:51:45.600
the sun, that hideous pair of devils.

1841
01:51:46.479 --> 01:51:48.920
Master, where is it, BAMBI.

1842
01:51:48.760 --> 01:51:51.479
Say the little one who smiles too often?

1843
01:51:51.760 --> 01:51:52.279
Besure?

1844
01:51:53.000 --> 01:51:54.199
What about him?

1845
01:51:54.439 --> 01:51:57.560
In the barber's there he's being chaved?

1846
01:51:57.720 --> 01:51:59.720
Do you assume the fact to be of some interest

1847
01:51:59.800 --> 01:52:04.880
to me? I only mentioned it un necessary. I was

1848
01:52:04.960 --> 01:52:07.960
already aware the Vijo was there in the barber's hut

1849
01:52:08.199 --> 01:52:09.119
being shaved.

1850
01:52:09.439 --> 01:52:11.039
I'm sorry, Master.

1851
01:52:11.239 --> 01:52:14.800
In fact, I am aware of several things that stupid

1852
01:52:14.840 --> 01:52:18.560
little Bijo thinks our secrets being shaved?

1853
01:52:18.720 --> 01:52:19.000
Is heh?

1854
01:52:20.640 --> 01:52:23.279
We have a blade that could give him a closer shave?

1855
01:52:24.760 --> 01:52:29.359
Eh bombys, Yes, it's so close that he would never

1856
01:52:29.560 --> 01:52:35.199
need another one. Interesting idea, very interesting. I think Vijo

1857
01:52:35.399 --> 01:52:38.800
was made rather a serious error, not realizing my cleverness.

1858
01:52:39.279 --> 01:52:42.760
A mistake. It may very well prove fatal.

1859
01:52:53.119 --> 01:52:53.319
Zell.

1860
01:52:54.199 --> 01:52:54.640
Who is it?

1861
01:52:55.399 --> 01:53:00.880
Your husband, my little one, your old old husband? You

1862
01:53:01.479 --> 01:53:03.039
were expecting someone else?

1863
01:53:03.199 --> 01:53:03.600
Perhaps?

1864
01:53:03.920 --> 01:53:05.039
No, of course not.

1865
01:53:05.800 --> 01:53:06.720
But you're home early?

1866
01:53:06.960 --> 01:53:07.880
Did I surprise you?

1867
01:53:08.680 --> 01:53:08.880
Well?

1868
01:53:09.119 --> 01:53:13.000
I enjoy surprising you, my dear. Do you mind?

1869
01:53:13.439 --> 01:53:13.479
No?

1870
01:53:14.600 --> 01:53:18.159
But theyn won't be ready for another hour yet, I'll start.

1871
01:53:17.960 --> 01:53:20.439
It at once an hour. What is an hour when

1872
01:53:20.479 --> 01:53:25.199
we have a lifetime together as any? Yes, sir, even

1873
01:53:25.279 --> 01:53:29.960
though I'm an old man, old enough to be your er,

1874
01:53:30.800 --> 01:53:31.439
your father.

1875
01:53:32.039 --> 01:53:34.960
Eh, you do not answer me.

1876
01:53:35.720 --> 01:53:38.640
I I don't consider you old, sir.

1877
01:53:39.279 --> 01:53:39.640
Thank you.

1878
01:53:40.680 --> 01:53:44.439
Then we will have many more years together. No, but

1879
01:53:44.760 --> 01:53:47.399
of course, sir, and we must make good use of

1880
01:53:47.479 --> 01:53:49.960
those years. We must do things.

1881
01:53:50.079 --> 01:53:51.720
Eh, anything you wish?

1882
01:53:51.960 --> 01:53:55.279
And why not begin with a small trip up the coast.

1883
01:53:56.039 --> 01:53:57.479
I can easily get permission.

1884
01:53:58.000 --> 01:53:58.760
Whatever you say.

1885
01:53:58.960 --> 01:54:03.079
Good, Then we shall leave the first of next week.

1886
01:54:03.479 --> 01:54:08.039
Next week, yes, my dear, why not? But next week

1887
01:54:08.399 --> 01:54:10.560
eight days from not the boat stops here.

1888
01:54:12.399 --> 01:54:16.760
Well, I had forgotten about it. But what could that

1889
01:54:16.880 --> 01:54:18.439
possibly have to do with us?

1890
01:54:19.039 --> 01:54:19.239
Well?

1891
01:54:19.840 --> 01:54:22.800
Letters, there may be letters for you from France, and

1892
01:54:22.960 --> 01:54:23.479
your papers.

1893
01:54:23.680 --> 01:54:25.119
You know how you love your papers?

1894
01:54:25.359 --> 01:54:30.319
Er, you were so considerate of my welfare's eli try

1895
01:54:30.399 --> 01:54:36.520
to be sir. You must love me very much. I said,

1896
01:54:37.439 --> 01:54:42.760
you must love me very much. Oh, of course say it?

1897
01:54:43.560 --> 01:54:47.640
What say that you love me very much?

1898
01:54:49.039 --> 01:54:52.800
I love you very much, sir.

1899
01:54:53.840 --> 01:54:54.159
Pretty.

1900
01:54:55.319 --> 01:54:58.039
It's so unfortunate you must always address me, yes, sir

1901
01:54:59.119 --> 01:54:59.439
much too.

1902
01:54:59.560 --> 01:54:59.880
Former.

1903
01:55:00.520 --> 01:55:02.680
It means nothing, It's only a habit.

1904
01:55:02.800 --> 01:55:06.119
You must do something about that habit. I'm going out

1905
01:55:06.119 --> 01:55:09.079
while you prepared dinner. Silly, I must see Bombast about

1906
01:55:09.079 --> 01:55:09.640
a little matter.

1907
01:55:10.239 --> 01:55:11.520
You'll be back soon.

1908
01:55:11.680 --> 01:55:14.520
But of course, how could I bear to be away

1909
01:55:14.520 --> 01:55:18.079
from you, not to see you or touch you, for

1910
01:55:18.239 --> 01:55:29.760
even one single night? Good bye, silly. I'm beast, yes her?

1911
01:55:29.920 --> 01:55:34.520
Oh eh, hey, yes, Master, I'm beast. Are you aware

1912
01:55:34.600 --> 01:55:37.039
that we've not worked in some time till?

1913
01:55:37.640 --> 01:55:39.119
Not for a long time?

1914
01:55:39.439 --> 01:55:39.960
Too long?

1915
01:55:40.199 --> 01:55:45.319
Eh, Bombies, Oh, yes, Master, much too long, I'm beast.

1916
01:55:46.039 --> 01:55:48.119
In view of that treaty between the government of the

1917
01:55:48.199 --> 01:55:52.640
jungle tribes, the prison officials might be very displeased if

1918
01:55:52.680 --> 01:55:54.760
a native should be murdered.

1919
01:55:54.560 --> 01:55:57.680
But of course the officials are leaning over backward to

1920
01:55:57.800 --> 01:55:58.560
avoid trouble.

1921
01:55:58.640 --> 01:56:00.479
And what do you think would happen to a man

1922
01:56:00.560 --> 01:56:05.840
who murdered the native? Chunk surgery precisely?

1923
01:56:07.000 --> 01:56:08.239
Has somebody killed a Canack?

1924
01:56:08.439 --> 01:56:09.960
No, Beast, not.

1925
01:56:10.319 --> 01:56:12.600
Yet, not yet, Bombast.

1926
01:56:13.359 --> 01:56:17.199
Do you happen to know where our little friend sleeps

1927
01:56:17.239 --> 01:56:19.520
at night, handsome Beejo?

1928
01:56:20.680 --> 01:56:24.079
I think it is in Barrack number twelve.

1929
01:56:24.279 --> 01:56:26.640
Would you find his bed in the dark?

1930
01:56:27.119 --> 01:56:28.279
Yes, master, But.

1931
01:56:29.319 --> 01:56:32.000
If it is a matter of slipping a knife between

1932
01:56:32.079 --> 01:56:34.760
his ribs, there are much better places than the barracks.

1933
01:56:35.119 --> 01:56:38.000
Why not in the jungle where it may seem that

1934
01:56:38.119 --> 01:56:42.199
a native please bombast or, I'm sy master, you are

1935
01:56:42.279 --> 01:56:45.760
not going to slip a knife between Bijou's ribs. In fact,

1936
01:56:45.880 --> 01:56:48.239
my little Bombastite the contrary.

1937
01:56:50.560 --> 01:57:07.760
Well, we got we got to mine quiet visual, be sure,

1938
01:57:09.199 --> 01:57:10.039
what do you want?

1939
01:57:10.760 --> 01:57:11.560
Why are you awake?

1940
01:57:11.720 --> 01:57:12.800
Do my something has happened.

1941
01:57:13.439 --> 01:57:16.159
I'm not sure what it is. Oh, what do you mean?

1942
01:57:16.600 --> 01:57:18.960
I woke a moment ago some some sound, I think

1943
01:57:19.560 --> 01:57:21.399
to my I have something here to show you?

1944
01:57:21.520 --> 01:57:22.319
What? Oh?

1945
01:57:22.399 --> 01:57:23.159
What is a visual?

1946
01:57:23.399 --> 01:57:23.600
Wait?

1947
01:57:24.119 --> 01:57:30.359
Let me strike a matchic look. He was holding a

1948
01:57:30.479 --> 01:57:33.199
convicts jacket in his hands, made of gray cotton canvas.

1949
01:57:33.319 --> 01:57:36.039
The number on the pocket was two two three two

1950
01:57:36.640 --> 01:57:39.399
be show's own number, and the whole front of the

1951
01:57:39.520 --> 01:57:42.640
jacket was splattered with bright red blood.

1952
01:57:53.520 --> 01:57:55.680
In just a moment, we will return with the second

1953
01:57:55.760 --> 01:57:59.600
act of escape. But first, most people like to know

1954
01:57:59.680 --> 01:58:02.479
what to expect. But on at least one CBS show,

1955
01:58:02.560 --> 01:58:04.439
a great part of the fun is in what turns

1956
01:58:04.520 --> 01:58:06.720
up on the spur of the moment. That show is

1957
01:58:06.760 --> 01:58:09.880
Grouto Mark's Great Quiz You Bet Your Life, heard every

1958
01:58:09.880 --> 01:58:14.159
Wednesday night on most of these same CBS stations. Now

1959
01:58:14.239 --> 01:58:17.680
we return you to the second act of escape.

1960
01:58:26.359 --> 01:58:28.760
The brief time before the match flared and went out

1961
01:58:28.840 --> 01:58:31.600
seemed like minutes. I grabbed the show by the arm

1962
01:58:31.680 --> 01:58:34.600
and lay still, listening in the darkness, straining to hear

1963
01:58:34.680 --> 01:58:36.399
whether anyone else may have been awakened.

1964
01:58:38.520 --> 01:58:39.279
There was no sound.

1965
01:58:39.920 --> 01:58:46.479
The other men slept on my sandals, feeling they're wet. Yes,

1966
01:58:47.079 --> 01:58:50.119
they'd been worn outside somewhere within the last hour. And

1967
01:58:50.319 --> 01:58:53.159
do my My knife has blown on it too.

1968
01:58:53.920 --> 01:58:56.640
Be sure, Tell me quickly, where have you been?

1969
01:58:56.720 --> 01:58:57.319
What have you done?

1970
01:58:57.880 --> 01:58:58.159
Nothing?

1971
01:58:58.199 --> 01:58:58.920
I've been asleep.

1972
01:58:59.119 --> 01:58:59.960
You've not been out of the bed.

1973
01:59:00.399 --> 01:59:02.720
No, I swear it to Why what is this?

1974
01:59:03.079 --> 01:59:05.800
What does it mean, bijore? I think it means that

1975
01:59:05.960 --> 01:59:09.840
someone is more clever than you. Wait, what is it

1976
01:59:10.079 --> 01:59:16.399
the prison docks? Listen, Yes, they're coming this way, do you?

1977
01:59:16.439 --> 01:59:17.239
Why are they after me?

1978
01:59:17.960 --> 01:59:18.479
Who else?

1979
01:59:19.079 --> 01:59:19.840
What am I going to do?

1980
01:59:20.279 --> 01:59:20.439
Well?

1981
01:59:20.600 --> 01:59:24.720
First, we must dispose of these bloody clothes in the jungle.

1982
01:59:24.760 --> 01:59:27.920
I think we You're going to help me, of course,

1983
01:59:28.000 --> 01:59:31.079
my friend. Come, I have a plan. Quietly, now, be

1984
01:59:31.199 --> 01:59:36.079
sure and quickly. We threaded our way among the sleeping

1985
01:59:36.159 --> 01:59:38.840
convicts to the rear of the barracks. Near the back door,

1986
01:59:38.920 --> 01:59:41.439
I saw a pair of old worn rope sandals. I

1987
01:59:41.479 --> 01:59:43.560
grabbed them and took them with me, And then we

1988
01:59:43.680 --> 01:59:46.640
raced across the herd beaten earth of the compound, cursing

1989
01:59:46.720 --> 01:59:49.960
the bright moon overhead, and plunged under the black thicket

1990
01:59:50.000 --> 01:59:58.000
of leanna and mangrove and fern into the jungle. For

1991
01:59:58.159 --> 02:00:00.279
half an hour or more, we smashed our way through

1992
02:00:00.319 --> 02:00:04.399
the soggy tangle of undergrowth, crashing into trees, tripping into

1993
02:00:04.479 --> 02:00:07.640
vines and roots, sprawling full length on the swampy loam.

1994
02:00:08.239 --> 02:00:10.520
But always we staggered to our feet again and ran

1995
02:00:10.600 --> 02:00:12.880
on and on and on to mine.

1996
02:00:13.600 --> 02:00:14.039
Where is it?

1997
02:00:14.680 --> 02:00:15.560
Where's that stream?

1998
02:00:16.239 --> 02:00:18.920
We must be very close now. I saw it here

1999
02:00:19.079 --> 02:00:20.439
somewhere last spring.

2000
02:00:20.600 --> 02:00:22.000
But this is not last spring.

2001
02:00:22.319 --> 02:00:23.520
Streams do not move about.

2002
02:00:23.920 --> 02:00:26.199
Keep on, we'll never find it.

2003
02:00:26.199 --> 02:00:26.840
In this darkness.

2004
02:00:26.960 --> 02:00:29.239
There will be a path of moonlight. The trees are

2005
02:00:29.279 --> 02:00:32.439
open above the stream. No, bi, sure, go on, what

2006
02:00:32.680 --> 02:00:34.720
do mine? It's no time to stop now.

2007
02:00:34.880 --> 02:00:39.279
Wait listen, I think the dogs are closer.

2008
02:00:39.720 --> 02:00:41.319
No, but they soon will be.

2009
02:00:41.439 --> 02:00:42.479
Come on to mine.

2010
02:00:42.520 --> 02:00:43.760
We must find that stream.

2011
02:00:46.319 --> 02:00:49.439
And then minutes later we did find it. Dead, tired,

2012
02:00:49.520 --> 02:00:51.680
and dripping with sweat from the steaming heat of the

2013
02:00:51.760 --> 02:00:54.640
tropic night. We stumbled over a low hummock and saw

2014
02:00:54.720 --> 02:00:57.239
the blazing white path of moonlight ahead of us, almost

2015
02:00:57.319 --> 02:00:57.800
at our feet.

2016
02:00:58.439 --> 02:00:59.279
We slid down.

2017
02:00:59.359 --> 02:01:04.079
The shallow dropped to her knees, and then all our

2018
02:01:04.359 --> 02:01:05.800
brave hopes died out of us.

2019
02:01:06.760 --> 02:01:07.159
Do my.

2020
02:01:09.159 --> 02:01:09.199
Do?

2021
02:01:09.359 --> 02:01:10.600
Why the stream is dry?

2022
02:01:10.760 --> 02:01:11.119
Be shore?

2023
02:01:11.199 --> 02:01:13.119
I tell you last spring it was a torrent that

2024
02:01:13.199 --> 02:01:17.800
filled these banks so high, higher than my head's Try.

2025
02:01:18.800 --> 02:01:24.039
Not a trickle, bess her. They're coming closer. Run do

2026
02:01:24.199 --> 02:01:26.199
my run while you still can't.

2027
02:01:26.279 --> 02:01:28.760
No, look, I brought another part of sandals from the

2028
02:01:28.800 --> 02:01:29.760
barrack here.

2029
02:01:29.840 --> 02:01:30.279
Put them on.

2030
02:01:30.760 --> 02:01:32.920
The dogs will not have the scent of this pear. Quickly.

2031
02:01:33.039 --> 02:01:35.640
Now you'll put on those saddles and then circle back

2032
02:01:35.640 --> 02:01:36.159
to the barrack.

2033
02:01:36.720 --> 02:01:37.319
They'll never know you.

2034
02:01:37.439 --> 02:01:40.000
Let I can run no farther.

2035
02:01:40.840 --> 02:01:41.520
I'll wait for them.

2036
02:01:41.880 --> 02:01:42.279
Be shure.

2037
02:01:42.399 --> 02:01:43.640
I cannot leave you here.

2038
02:01:43.760 --> 02:01:46.520
That don't be a fool. But on those sandals, hurry

2039
02:01:46.560 --> 02:01:51.079
numberfore us too late and later There's something I'd like

2040
02:01:51.119 --> 02:01:54.920
for you to do for me. Here the tickets to France.

2041
02:01:55.960 --> 02:01:56.640
Give them to Zell.

2042
02:01:57.800 --> 02:01:58.720
I'll get away from it.

2043
02:01:59.000 --> 02:02:02.359
If only there was some way to kill him. With nothing.

2044
02:02:03.640 --> 02:02:04.880
To go to the.

2045
02:02:06.640 --> 02:02:11.880
Leon, they will take care of her all right. Is

2046
02:02:11.960 --> 02:02:13.640
there nothing else that you know?

2047
02:02:14.560 --> 02:02:14.680
Then?

2048
02:02:14.760 --> 02:02:16.600
Goodbye bi Shore, good bye my friend.

2049
02:02:18.039 --> 02:02:19.399
Tell her I love her very much.

2050
02:02:29.560 --> 02:02:32.359
Being a convict, I was of course not permitted to

2051
02:02:32.439 --> 02:02:35.399
attend the trial of my friend Bijou for the murder

2052
02:02:35.479 --> 02:02:40.800
of a native. There were two convicts present, however, two

2053
02:02:41.079 --> 02:02:44.960
star witnesses who palmed the Bible reverently and swore to

2054
02:02:45.079 --> 02:02:49.720
having seen Bijo commit the murder, two demons from Hell,

2055
02:02:50.640 --> 02:02:56.399
Monsieur d'neaux and Bombast. The trial was over in less

2056
02:02:56.399 --> 02:03:01.640
than two hours. The verdict was not surprising, the sentence inevitable.

2057
02:03:02.319 --> 02:03:08.079
Convict Bijaux, you arise and face the council. Have you

2058
02:03:08.199 --> 02:03:09.920
anything more to say in your defense?

2059
02:03:10.680 --> 02:03:14.720
Nothing I haven't said before. I've killed Noah.

2060
02:03:16.079 --> 02:03:19.000
Then this Council of the penal Colony of New Caledonia,

2061
02:03:19.720 --> 02:03:22.880
sitting as a special court of the Republic of France,

2062
02:03:24.039 --> 02:03:28.760
finds you guilty as charged. As commandant of this prison,

2063
02:03:28.840 --> 02:03:31.399
I order you to be taken to the compound of

2064
02:03:31.479 --> 02:03:36.479
the camp at daybreak of the second morning following, and

2065
02:03:36.640 --> 02:03:41.239
there in the presence of your fellow convicts to be guillotined.

2066
02:03:51.680 --> 02:03:55.079
I the night before the execution, I stood outside Bijau's

2067
02:03:55.079 --> 02:03:57.520
cell rose cigarettes and handed them to him through the

2068
02:03:57.560 --> 02:04:00.720
barred window. The guard dozed somewhere on the other side

2069
02:04:00.760 --> 02:04:03.359
of the hut. After all, my friend was to die

2070
02:04:03.399 --> 02:04:05.760
in the morning. No one could escape from this place,

2071
02:04:06.319 --> 02:04:08.000
and there was no reason for caution.

2072
02:04:09.520 --> 02:04:11.000
Sillie, how did she take it? Is you all right?

2073
02:04:11.159 --> 02:04:13.479
I could only see her for a moment. It was dangerous.

2074
02:04:13.520 --> 02:04:15.159
I gave her the tickets, but she says she will

2075
02:04:15.239 --> 02:04:15.680
not leave you.

2076
02:04:15.960 --> 02:04:18.359
It's I who will be leaving in the morning at daybreak.

2077
02:04:18.760 --> 02:04:21.920
Does she expect a miracle? Probably because she is in

2078
02:04:22.000 --> 02:04:24.960
love with you. She's very upset, of course, Nellie out

2079
02:04:25.000 --> 02:04:26.560
of her mind, poor little silly.

2080
02:04:27.960 --> 02:04:30.680
I hope it goes well with her. France, Bijore.

2081
02:04:30.840 --> 02:04:32.479
Is there nothing at all I can do for you?

2082
02:04:32.640 --> 02:04:33.239
Some song?

2083
02:04:33.760 --> 02:04:34.039
Nothing?

2084
02:04:34.760 --> 02:04:37.279
The Republic has been very thoughtful in all the details.

2085
02:04:37.880 --> 02:04:40.000
In a bottle of red wine with my last meal

2086
02:04:40.520 --> 02:04:43.520
or the vintage was atrocious, Bijou. And look they've even

2087
02:04:43.600 --> 02:04:45.760
left me the black hood which I wear to the guillotine.

2088
02:04:46.359 --> 02:04:48.279
I suppose I'm to make sure of the size or

2089
02:04:48.319 --> 02:04:50.720
get used to wearing it or something? My friend, which

2090
02:04:50.760 --> 02:04:53.119
you like for me to send for the priest? He

2091
02:04:53.319 --> 02:04:55.920
was here, but I sent him away. I thought he

2092
02:04:55.920 --> 02:04:57.960
would need a good night's sleep, since he's supposed to

2093
02:04:58.000 --> 02:05:00.760
accompany me in my ordeal, not of course, to the

2094
02:05:00.800 --> 02:05:03.119
extent of getting his head cut off. You understand, bijou?

2095
02:05:03.239 --> 02:05:05.079
How can you make jokes about a thing like this?

2096
02:05:05.359 --> 02:05:05.720
My friend?

2097
02:05:05.760 --> 02:05:07.600
How can I do anything else? The game is over?

2098
02:05:07.680 --> 02:05:09.520
Should I pound my head on the wall and scream

2099
02:05:09.640 --> 02:05:10.359
like a madmanner?

2100
02:05:11.159 --> 02:05:11.439
Quiet?

2101
02:05:12.560 --> 02:05:16.720
Someone is coming? Mishare it is Sally?

2102
02:05:16.960 --> 02:05:18.319
What Sali?

2103
02:05:19.520 --> 02:05:20.039
Are they here?

2104
02:05:20.840 --> 02:05:21.279
Who is it?

2105
02:05:21.760 --> 02:05:22.239
You mind?

2106
02:05:23.119 --> 02:05:24.840
Come here by the wall?

2107
02:05:26.239 --> 02:05:28.119
You mind? Does not waste time?

2108
02:05:28.640 --> 02:05:30.680
Go away from here quickly before they find you.

2109
02:05:30.920 --> 02:05:31.640
Be quiet, dear.

2110
02:05:32.159 --> 02:05:33.840
Here the key to was Selima.

2111
02:05:34.199 --> 02:05:36.359
The guards a sleep. Where did you get this from

2112
02:05:36.399 --> 02:05:37.960
my husband after he went to sleep?

2113
02:05:38.239 --> 02:05:41.239
Hurry please, but it will help nothing, only cause trouble

2114
02:05:41.319 --> 02:05:41.479
for you.

2115
02:05:41.680 --> 02:05:43.560
There's no time to argue. Hurry.

2116
02:05:45.600 --> 02:05:47.760
I took the key and slipped around to the entrance

2117
02:05:47.800 --> 02:05:50.840
of the hut. The fat guard dozed in a chair

2118
02:05:50.960 --> 02:05:54.520
with his hands folded on his paunch. I moved past him,

2119
02:05:54.600 --> 02:05:58.119
tiptoed to the door of Bijou's cell, fitted the key

2120
02:05:58.199 --> 02:06:03.119
in the lock. I held my breath, but nothing stirred.

2121
02:06:04.920 --> 02:06:07.680
Bishow came out of the cell without a word. We

2122
02:06:07.760 --> 02:06:09.840
slipped past the guard and met Celi by the wall

2123
02:06:09.880 --> 02:06:12.560
of the hut. The three of us skirted the moonlit

2124
02:06:12.640 --> 02:06:15.039
compound with a grim black shadow of the guillotine in

2125
02:06:15.079 --> 02:06:18.920
the center of it, without erasing any alarm. We finally

2126
02:06:19.000 --> 02:06:27.520
reached the edge of the jungle. Zellie clung with a

2127
02:06:27.600 --> 02:06:32.800
desperate grip to Bejou's hand and wept sometimes, but gradually,

2128
02:06:32.880 --> 02:06:35.479
it became clear to all of us that there was

2129
02:06:35.640 --> 02:06:39.680
no answer, no escape. Bijow might swim to the ship

2130
02:06:39.800 --> 02:06:41.640
lying in the harbor, but with a prisoner at large,

2131
02:06:41.680 --> 02:06:44.319
it was sure to be searched before it sailed. The

2132
02:06:44.439 --> 02:06:46.560
coast in either direction was too well guarded, and that

2133
02:06:46.720 --> 02:06:50.279
left only the jungle in the hills beyond hills, swarming

2134
02:06:50.359 --> 02:06:52.840
with savages who were quite aware that the head of

2135
02:06:52.880 --> 02:06:56.039
an escaped convict delivered to the commandant was good for

2136
02:06:56.119 --> 02:06:57.960
a bolt of bright red calico.

2137
02:06:59.239 --> 02:07:00.319
But I spare.

2138
02:07:00.399 --> 02:07:04.000
The jungle seemed to offer at least some forlorn hope,

2139
02:07:04.479 --> 02:07:07.239
and so it was decided Bijou would try to reach

2140
02:07:07.279 --> 02:07:10.159
the western side of the island and from there Australia,

2141
02:07:10.600 --> 02:07:12.560
while Zelle would sail on the ship when it left

2142
02:07:12.560 --> 02:07:14.760
in the morning and wait for a word and leave on.

2143
02:07:15.720 --> 02:07:18.600
One thing was fortunate she had brought the clothes. Bejaure

2144
02:07:18.640 --> 02:07:20.880
had planned the word to France. We could leave his

2145
02:07:21.000 --> 02:07:23.159
convict Garb and his cell and stop in a trail.

2146
02:07:23.800 --> 02:07:28.560
This time there would be no dogs. Three hours before dawn,

2147
02:07:29.560 --> 02:07:32.039
after a long kiss for Zelly and the hand grip

2148
02:07:32.119 --> 02:07:36.199
for me, Bijau turned and struck into the jungle, and

2149
02:07:36.399 --> 02:07:37.720
Zelle broke in the tears.

2150
02:07:39.199 --> 02:07:42.000
He has no chant when there's a bond, find him

2151
02:07:42.039 --> 02:07:43.239
and kill him, monsieur, you might.

2152
02:07:43.560 --> 02:07:44.760
You know he has no chest.

2153
02:07:44.920 --> 02:07:48.119
He's very clever, zelly and brave. Of course, there's a chance.

2154
02:07:48.439 --> 02:07:50.720
I think he knows to kill him. Think he's only

2155
02:07:50.800 --> 02:07:51.560
being kind to me.

2156
02:07:51.760 --> 02:07:54.560
You're only speaking foolishness. You must be brave too, you know.

2157
02:07:54.960 --> 02:07:58.880
Pray I could do anything for Michaud except losing.

2158
02:07:59.199 --> 02:08:00.840
Well, you're likely to do that if we stay here

2159
02:08:00.840 --> 02:08:02.680
any longer. It's too near dawn now, and we have

2160
02:08:02.760 --> 02:08:05.199
to take those clothes back to the cell. You must

2161
02:08:05.239 --> 02:08:06.920
go home and be ready to slip aboard.

2162
02:08:06.680 --> 02:08:09.720
The boat only a few days ago. I was so happy.

2163
02:08:10.399 --> 02:08:13.279
For the first time in my life, Monsieur, we were

2164
02:08:13.359 --> 02:08:17.319
going away on that boat, little Bijo, and I now

2165
02:08:18.520 --> 02:08:21.399
in your mind, I cannot go on living without him.

2166
02:08:22.199 --> 02:08:24.000
I cannot bear to live without him.

2167
02:08:30.199 --> 02:08:37.760
As was the custom in those days, we knelt bareheaded,

2168
02:08:38.560 --> 02:08:41.760
over four hundred of us, on the hard packed dirt

2169
02:08:41.800 --> 02:08:46.439
of the compound, facing the guillotine. The morning sun bursts

2170
02:08:46.520 --> 02:08:50.439
suddenly over the eastern rim of the sea. It's blood

2171
02:08:50.520 --> 02:08:54.560
red color, fitting for the business at hand. The commandant

2172
02:08:54.600 --> 02:08:56.600
of the prison stood only a few yards from me,

2173
02:08:57.279 --> 02:09:00.880
and just beyond him fussing over their hideous machine, those

2174
02:09:01.000 --> 02:09:07.560
two vultures of evil, Monsieur d'uneux and bombast. The stage

2175
02:09:07.720 --> 02:09:12.039
was set, the audience was ready, and only I knew

2176
02:09:12.039 --> 02:09:13.960
that the star actor would not make an appearance.

2177
02:09:15.239 --> 02:09:17.279
Is everything in readiness, Monsieur Danneux.

2178
02:09:17.600 --> 02:09:20.239
Quite in readiness, Monsieur le commander.

2179
02:09:20.319 --> 02:09:22.520
Very well, bring out the prisoner.

2180
02:09:25.399 --> 02:09:28.119
I looked toward the cell hut and waited, keeping my

2181
02:09:28.279 --> 02:09:31.239
face as blank as all those around me. And then

2182
02:09:32.199 --> 02:09:34.680
a priest and a guard stepped out of the hut

2183
02:09:34.760 --> 02:09:38.760
and came toward us, and walking between them, wearing the

2184
02:09:38.880 --> 02:09:42.359
gray convict's uniform and the black hood of the condemned,

2185
02:09:43.720 --> 02:09:47.159
was my little friend bijhore one moment of Shark, and

2186
02:09:47.239 --> 02:09:50.039
then I suddenly understood his apparent agreement with our plans.

2187
02:09:50.039 --> 02:09:52.319
A few hours earlier, he had reasoned that by this

2188
02:09:52.439 --> 02:09:54.479
time Zelle should be aboard the ship that had waited

2189
02:09:54.520 --> 02:09:56.960
only for the tide to sail. She would not know

2190
02:09:57.079 --> 02:09:59.680
of the execution for months, a year or more of

2191
02:09:59.720 --> 02:10:03.319
a but then she would be settled safely in France.

2192
02:10:04.800 --> 02:10:08.800
And so be Shore had come back to place his death.

2193
02:10:09.399 --> 02:10:12.800
Romas raised the condemned prisoner.

2194
02:10:12.840 --> 02:10:13.399
On the rack.

2195
02:10:13.920 --> 02:10:17.720
Yes, master of all of us in the compound that morning,

2196
02:10:17.880 --> 02:10:21.039
the man who was to die seemed the least afraid

2197
02:10:21.680 --> 02:10:25.119
and the least concerned of any So the hideous black

2198
02:10:25.159 --> 02:10:28.439
hood covered his face and head to the shoulders. No

2199
02:10:28.720 --> 02:10:32.640
hood nor prison clothes could hide the almost jaunty swagger

2200
02:10:32.720 --> 02:10:36.399
of his walk. That swagger spoke a reproof to the

2201
02:10:36.760 --> 02:10:40.039
justice of the prison court, sneered at the blood stained,

2202
02:10:40.079 --> 02:10:44.439
evil soul of d'uneux and gave courage and hope to

2203
02:10:44.600 --> 02:10:45.880
us who knelt on the ground.

2204
02:10:47.319 --> 02:10:50.279
I am ready to proceed, monsieur le commandant.

2205
02:10:51.319 --> 02:10:54.680
Is it your order that this prisoner he executed?

2206
02:10:55.199 --> 02:10:58.279
It is proceed, Monsieur dannux.

2207
02:10:58.439 --> 02:11:04.319
Rommay here's the knight. I sink to the very top,

2208
02:11:05.000 --> 02:11:07.039
to the top Master.

2209
02:11:09.800 --> 02:11:13.359
The eyes of all of us officials and convicts alike

2210
02:11:13.520 --> 02:11:17.640
followed the heavy blade, moving slowly up the guides fascinated.

2211
02:11:18.640 --> 02:11:22.640
Some of us snarled or cursed, some of us trembled,

2212
02:11:23.680 --> 02:11:30.800
But only Monsieur d'unaux smiled to him sudden, So intent

2213
02:11:30.960 --> 02:11:33.000
was my gaze that I hardly noticed the native who

2214
02:11:33.079 --> 02:11:35.760
pushed past me carrying a leaf wrap bundle and walked

2215
02:11:35.840 --> 02:11:36.680
up to the commandant.

2216
02:11:36.920 --> 02:11:38.119
Here, what is this?

2217
02:11:38.760 --> 02:11:39.560
What are you doing here?

2218
02:11:39.840 --> 02:11:43.039
They bring him pella head? Hala sami. You gave him

2219
02:11:43.079 --> 02:11:43.920
one piece of calico.

2220
02:11:44.319 --> 02:11:48.119
We've had no escape here long time fella here, no.

2221
02:11:48.279 --> 02:11:51.159
Chop chop bush Halai bring him onpella head.

2222
02:11:51.560 --> 02:11:53.880
You look, monsieur do not holding the release cord of

2223
02:11:53.920 --> 02:11:56.560
the guillotine and his hand smiling, still had not noticed.

2224
02:11:57.119 --> 02:12:01.920
The native fumbled with his package and souddenly out rolled

2225
02:12:01.960 --> 02:12:05.920
a human head, one that was impossible.

2226
02:12:05.359 --> 02:12:06.800
To mistake you.

2227
02:12:08.039 --> 02:12:10.760
But but this is the head of the convict.

2228
02:12:11.159 --> 02:12:11.560
Bijore.

2229
02:12:11.720 --> 02:12:13.439
Than who in the name of heaven was the prisoner

2230
02:12:13.520 --> 02:12:14.000
on the rack.

2231
02:12:14.640 --> 02:12:16.000
Monsieur du stop.

2232
02:12:16.560 --> 02:12:23.079
No stop, Monsieur, that was not Bijore.

2233
02:12:24.039 --> 02:12:24.960
Here is his head?

2234
02:12:25.359 --> 02:12:30.600
Lowk not beho, Who is it you have killed?

2235
02:12:31.920 --> 02:12:36.720
Pull off the hood and sea No, No, I'm afraid,

2236
02:12:37.159 --> 02:12:38.000
Monsieur d'aneux.

2237
02:12:38.880 --> 02:12:40.359
Remove that hood.

2238
02:12:42.720 --> 02:12:43.840
Hm hm hm hm.

2239
02:12:47.399 --> 02:12:54.800
And then suddenly I knew it was not necessary for

2240
02:12:54.920 --> 02:13:01.119
me to see whom Monsieur d'arneux had executed. Little Zelie

2241
02:13:01.279 --> 02:13:06.119
had taken the place of Bishore on the guilloty and

2242
02:13:06.319 --> 02:13:09.079
now had joined him in death.

2243
02:13:17.119 --> 02:13:20.880
Escape is produced and directed by William N. Robson to

2244
02:13:21.000 --> 02:13:23.760
night we have presented The Red Mark by John Russell,

2245
02:13:24.079 --> 02:13:28.000

02:13:40.840 --> 02:13:43.439
music was arranged and conducted by Del Castilio.

2250
02:13:47.399 --> 02:13:55.520
Ah, the night has come to its natural conclusion. It's

2251
02:13:55.640 --> 02:13:58.159
time for you to go home and for me to

2252
02:13:58.319 --> 02:14:05.840
return to. Well, let's not go there just yet. Please

2253
02:14:06.199 --> 02:14:12.039
enjoy your sojourn as you go through the woods and

2254
02:14:12.319 --> 02:14:17.199
over the river, and way down deep and way up hard.

2255
02:14:18.840 --> 02:14:21.920
But as you enter the threshold of your beautiful house,

2256
02:14:23.279 --> 02:14:26.279
as you lay your head on that wonderful down pillow

2257
02:14:27.279 --> 02:14:32.600
and your eyes blink heavier and heavier, take just.

2258
02:14:32.680 --> 02:14:33.560
A moment from me.

2259
02:14:35.359 --> 02:14:39.079
And be thankful for what you have, and I'll be

2260
02:14:39.239 --> 02:14:42.720
right here waiting. I'll be seen here.

2261
02:14:45.000 --> 02:14:52.680
Come along and learn, my Emily Dacum, like beak into falling.

2262
02:15:00.079 --> 02:15:06.479
Don't bring your wrong bring your mumbling pilate, think of breakage.
