Unknown Broadcast | Deadline for Death: A Dead Gangster’s Promise and the Daylight-Saving Trap

A condemned gangster promises to kill the friend who betrayed him within one month of his execution—and keeps the deadline from beyond the grave.

Johnny Promo, known as Johnny Promise, dies in the electric chair for murdering Officer Cochran after a failed bank robbery. In court he swears that prosecution witness Sam Rogers will have no more than a month to live. Johnny has money, loyal associates, and a reputation for never breaking his word, so Sam hides on the ninth floor of a cheap hotel and trusts only Linda.

Every ordinary encounter becomes a possible assassination: a barber’s razor, a hot towel, a locksmith asking about duplicate keys, footsteps outside the room. Sam changes the locks and watches the calendar until September 28, determined to remain behind the door until 5 a.m. passes. Then clocks outside the hotel show a different hour, and he remembers that daylight-saving time ended during the night.

“Deadline for Death” is a CBS Radio Mystery Theater crime story about paranoia, betrayal, time, and supernatural revenge. A courtroom curse, electric-chair execution, locked hotel room, and fatal one-hour error drive Sam toward a deadline that may be psychological, criminal, or enforced by the dead themselves.
