One Fateful Halloween — Cursed Pumpkin Ring and Nightmare-Realm Horror

One Fateful Halloween — Cursed Pumpkin Ring and Nightmare-Realm Horror

A rebellious Strickfield teenager steals a glowing pumpkin ring and is dragged into a nightmare realm of living vines, pumpkin demons, and ghostly villages.

When a rebellious teen steals a mysterious glowing pumpkin ring from a strange shop in Strickfield, she unleashes a Halloween curse that drags her into a nightmare realm filled with monsters and terror.

As the night unfolds, she encounters living vines, pumpkin demons, and ghostly villages in a desperate fight for survival. Escaping the curse means facing her own transformation—and realizing that some things you steal can steal you right back.

One Fateful Halloween — by Rob Fields

The glowing pumpkin ring turns an impulsive theft into a rule: the object does not merely punish its thief, it carries her into a world shaped by Halloween symbols. Vines move, pumpkin demons hunt, and a ghostly village suggests that the curse has collected a history of victims before her.

Rob Fields gives the rebellious protagonist a survival problem and a transformation problem at the same time. Escaping requires more than finding a doorway home, because the ring is changing the person who stole it. The story combines cursed-jewelry folklore, portal fantasy, creature horror, and a moral consequence that becomes physically impossible to return.

32
00:02:49.400 --> 00:02:53.479
for tonight, have you ever noticed how on Halloween some

33
00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:59.560
things just feel different, Like the air is thicker, the

34
00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:05.479
shadow move a little slower, and maybe, just maybe you're

35
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:10.800
being watched. Now, imagine finding something that wasn't meant for you,

36
00:03:11.599 --> 00:03:16.879
something small and shiny calling your name, and when you

37
00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:20.639
take it, you don't just steal it, you steal your

38
00:03:20.680 --> 00:03:33.360
way into another world. Our story after this one fateful

39
00:03:33.560 --> 00:03:41.319
Halloween by Rob Fields. It's Halloween here in Strickfield and

40
00:03:41.439 --> 00:03:44.879
I was forced to take my little sister Phoebe to

41
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:50.240
Strickfield Town Center mall since there's no school today. So

42
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:52.639
much for being able to sleep in a little bit.

43
00:03:53.719 --> 00:03:57.159
Hopefully I can sleep in tomorrow since there's no school

44
00:03:57.199 --> 00:04:01.919
then either. With Phoebe always being a pain, I know

45
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:07.240
that's not gonna happen. There'll be Saturday mornings when I

46
00:04:07.280 --> 00:04:10.520
got my door closed, only for that little pest to

47
00:04:10.599 --> 00:04:13.520
come right in my room, get on my bed and

48
00:04:13.560 --> 00:04:17.240
start jumping up and down while telling me I gotta

49
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:21.079
get up. I can't yell at her because then Mom

50
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:26.839
gets mad and starts yelling at me about yelling at Phoebe. Seriously,

51
00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:31.040
I just I can't win. I guess I ought to

52
00:04:31.079 --> 00:04:34.319
be thankful though Mom and Dad don't say anything about

53
00:04:34.360 --> 00:04:38.560
my punk style. I probably died and buzzed my hair

54
00:04:39.240 --> 00:04:44.040
dozens of times, and I even got different piercings. Then

55
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:47.399
there's the clothes I wear. I guess since I ain't

56
00:04:47.399 --> 00:04:50.800
getting in trouble at school, Mom and Dad both don't care.

57
00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:54.920
Mom herself seems to only care when she wants me

58
00:04:55.079 --> 00:04:58.600
to watch Phoebe. The pest and me have been going

59
00:04:58.639 --> 00:05:03.720
into stores and just looking at whatever. Oh wait. I

60
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:06.240
also had to take Phoebe to Spirit Halloween to get

61
00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:09.720
her a few more things for her costume. I got

62
00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:13.199
no clue what she's gonna be, and I really don't care.

63
00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:15.920
I just want to go have fun tonight and hit

64
00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:20.800
up a few parties at Strickfield University, mainly because Wicked

65
00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:24.160
Pedia is back in Strickfield and playing a show at

66
00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:27.240
one of the frat houses. I ain't sure which one.

67
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:30.199
I gotta go hit up Wilder Hall and look at

68
00:05:30.199 --> 00:05:33.839
the flyer at the coffee place they got there. Then

69
00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:36.720
I get my head out of the clouds and wonder

70
00:05:36.839 --> 00:05:41.319
why the heck I'm even walking down this particular hallway.

71
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:48.000
There's nothing down here, as in no stores. Then I'm

72
00:05:48.040 --> 00:05:55.360
proven wrong when I see a single store here called Tinkers.

73
00:05:56.079 --> 00:05:59.839
Looks like some junk shop or something. I look at

74
00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:04.120
my phone and see, we gotta kill a little more time. Yet,

75
00:06:04.399 --> 00:06:07.800
Mom's cleaning up around the house, so she don't want

76
00:06:07.879 --> 00:06:12.319
us back home till she's all done. Guess we're going

77
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:16.519
in the junk shop. I tell the pest. I don't wanna.

78
00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:23.360
She whins, well, too bad, I say, besides, we did

79
00:06:23.399 --> 00:06:26.839
what you wanted to do at the Halloween store. She

80
00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:30.839
gives me that poudy look of hers. Again. I hate you.

81
00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:36.759
I roll my eyes. Yeah, well right back at you. Now.

82
00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:41.040
Come on. Phoebe's always giving me mean looks when I

83
00:06:41.079 --> 00:06:44.199
won't give her her way. We go into the junk

84
00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:48.519
shop and look around. Seriously, why do these kinds of

85
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:54.079
places even exist? I mean, who really buys this crap?

86
00:06:55.399 --> 00:06:58.480
It ain't long before this old geezer comes over and

87
00:06:58.600 --> 00:07:03.319
asks me if I need help finding anything just looking.

88
00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:10.560
I mutter, no problem, he says, names Isley Tinker. I'll

89
00:07:10.600 --> 00:07:14.360
be up front if you need anything. I keep dragging

90
00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:18.399
Phoebe around the store. Believe it or not, there's actually

91
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:23.279
a few interesting things in here. Nothing I gotta have, though.

92
00:07:24.199 --> 00:07:27.600
We eventually make it up to the counter. Tinker's there

93
00:07:27.639 --> 00:07:30.319
as I'm seeing what he's got In the display case.

94
00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:35.120
There's things from old video game consoles to a few

95
00:07:35.199 --> 00:07:40.680
movies on video cassette. I'm surprised Dad still watches movies

96
00:07:40.720 --> 00:07:47.959
on those ancient relics. Then I see a movie called

97
00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:55.319
The Strickfield Slasher and don't recall ever hearing anything about

98
00:07:55.319 --> 00:07:59.439
that one, and I'm usually renting horror movies from Strickfield

99
00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:04.680
Video most every weekend. Seriously, what is wrong with what

100
00:08:04.720 --> 00:08:07.519
I just said? You'd think i'd be out on dates

101
00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:11.639
with boys from Strickfield High or maybe even the university.

102
00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:14.639
Turns out, Mom and Dad get to go out on

103
00:08:14.680 --> 00:08:18.839
Fridays and Saturdays, which means I get to stay home

104
00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:23.000
and babysit Phoebe. It's the same old story when they

105
00:08:23.079 --> 00:08:26.360
rattle on about how they work hard all day and

106
00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:30.519
they're entitled to their Friday and Saturday nights. They even

107
00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:36.759
add I'm too young to date. No, I'm only almost nineteen,

108
00:08:37.519 --> 00:08:41.720
that's all. And don't even get me started. On Halloween week,

109
00:08:42.399 --> 00:08:45.679
I either gotta take Phoebe trick or treating or I

110
00:08:45.759 --> 00:08:50.559
gotta stay home and hand out candy. I really hate

111
00:08:50.600 --> 00:08:56.159
my life. Sometimes something's definitely got to change. And soon

112
00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:01.639
a phone rings, then tinkered. He turns around and answers it.

113
00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:05.120
I don't listen to what he's saying, because I got

114
00:09:05.159 --> 00:09:10.159
my eyes on this awesome ring. Now. I ain't one

115
00:09:10.200 --> 00:09:14.559
to wear Halloween jewelry, but there's this ring with a

116
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:18.879
I don't know, a glowing pumpkin on it or something.

117
00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:22.919
I pick up the ring and feel it. Wow, this

118
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:26.840
pumpkin ain't no cheap plastic with a light bulb in it.

119
00:09:26.840 --> 00:09:30.120
It's gotta be some kind of a jewel or stone.

120
00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:36.840
Phoebe ain't looking, and neither is Tinker. I lifted a

121
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:40.840
few little things in stores before I know how to

122
00:09:40.919 --> 00:09:46.039
do it, so no cameras catch me. When Tinker's finished,

123
00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:49.440
he hangs up. Then he turns around to look at me.

124
00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:52.759
Guess he'll get a little money off me for the

125
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:56.480
sodas I grabbed for Phoebe in me, he thanks us

126
00:09:56.480 --> 00:10:01.000
for stopping in. When we turn to leave, Tinker don't

127
00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:04.279
say anything about the ring. I want to go to

128
00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:11.320
kitty Land again. Phoebe winds, Yeah, yeah, I mutter, whatever

129
00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:14.919
looks like. I get to watch Phoebe play in the

130
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.600
playland just off center Court. I may just head into

131
00:10:19.639 --> 00:10:27.679
that babble Topia place again while I'm letting her play. Wow,

132
00:10:29.639 --> 00:10:33.200
it's dark and tricker treating's going on for the final

133
00:10:33.320 --> 00:10:36.720
night of Halloween week. I'm all dressed up in my

134
00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:41.039
dark outfit and got my makeup on. And where do

135
00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:45.480
you think you are going? Sheila Mom calls out. When

136
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:49.559
I'm ready to take off, I turn around. I'm gonna

137
00:10:49.559 --> 00:10:52.639
get on over to Strickfield you and catch that Wicked

138
00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:56.000
Pedia show. I've been telling you about it all week.

139
00:10:56.679 --> 00:11:00.440
Mom shakes her head quickly. No, no, no, you are

140
00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:03.879
staying right here and handing out candy while I take

141
00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:09.440
phoebe trick or treating. No way, I fire back. I

142
00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:13.639
ain't missing that show. Dad can do it. Your father

143
00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:18.279
hasn't even come home from work yet. Mom informs me

144
00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:21.679
he had to stay after for a big meeting and

145
00:11:21.720 --> 00:11:25.440
won't be home for another hour. Yet that means you

146
00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:31.039
are staying right here and handing out candy. End of discussion.

147
00:11:32.440 --> 00:11:36.360
You gotta find newer and better ways to ruin my life. Huh,

148
00:11:36.600 --> 00:11:41.799
I mutter. Mom, ain't even phased. You can complain all

149
00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:46.679
you want, Sheila, but you're still handing out candy. In fact,

150
00:11:47.159 --> 00:11:48.960
you'd better get busy right now.

151
00:11:50.960 --> 00:11:54.879
You're not safe yet, Weekly Spooky will be right back.

152
00:11:59.559 --> 00:12:02.639
I got half a mind to just bail and head

153
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:08.039
to Strickfield University anyway. But my parents don't say nothing

154
00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:11.240
about what I wear or what kind of music and

155
00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:16.480
movies I like. And it ain't like there being abusive. Wait,

156
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:20.720
scratch that, almost forgot about the no dating or going

157
00:12:20.759 --> 00:12:24.600
out at night thing. I roll my eyes and step

158
00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:27.960
out on the front porch right when a big group

159
00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:31.720
of little brats come up with their bags wide open

160
00:12:32.519 --> 00:12:37.320
trick or treat They practically roar, so I give them

161
00:12:37.320 --> 00:12:41.919
the candy and continue to think about bailing. I managed

162
00:12:41.960 --> 00:12:44.159
to text it up with a few boys I know

163
00:12:44.360 --> 00:12:49.480
who like me, including a college sophomore. At least it's

164
00:12:49.519 --> 00:12:54.000
helping make the night go by a little faster. I

165
00:12:54.120 --> 00:12:57.639
keep handing out the candy as tricker treaters just keep

166
00:12:57.720 --> 00:13:01.320
coming out of nowhere, and the timing couldn't have been

167
00:13:01.399 --> 00:13:06.159
more perfect. When Mom and Phoebe come back home as

168
00:13:06.200 --> 00:13:10.360
I'm getting low on candy, have you been giving two

169
00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.759
pieces of candy per trick or treater? Like I said?

170
00:13:14.440 --> 00:13:20.320
Mom demands, what do you think? I snap for the record, yes,

171
00:13:20.720 --> 00:13:24.279
I did what Mom said. She looks at her watch

172
00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:27.840
and trick or Treating is still a good two and

173
00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:31.720
a half hours from being over. Mom brings Phoebe in

174
00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:36.279
the house with her haul of candy. A few minutes later,

175
00:13:36.399 --> 00:13:39.080
she comes back to me and hands me some money.

176
00:13:39.879 --> 00:13:42.240
I'll take over. I want you to head out to

177
00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:45.279
Meyer and buy some more candy, then you can hand

178
00:13:45.320 --> 00:13:48.720
it out when you get back. I take the money

179
00:13:48.919 --> 00:13:55.240
and groan, Seriously, you are ruining my Halloween. Don't take

180
00:13:55.279 --> 00:14:01.799
that attitude with me, Sheila. Mom snaps, maybe I just

181
00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:06.720
won't come home. Then I reply, Mom groans and hands

182
00:14:06.759 --> 00:14:10.440
me the keys. Just go buy the candy and come

183
00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:15.679
back home. Okay, okay, geez. At least I get to

184
00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:18.919
get away from here for a little bit. I pull

185
00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:22.080
out of the driveway and got a drive nice and easy,

186
00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:26.320
so I don't get no homicides on my hands. Little

187
00:14:26.360 --> 00:14:28.799
too young to be starting a life sentence over at

188
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:33.480
glen View. Speaking of being a criminal, I remember that

189
00:14:33.559 --> 00:14:38.200
Halloween ring I lifted from Tinker's store. So far, no

190
00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:41.279
cops have been my way to ask about it, no

191
00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:44.759
phone call at the house neither. I pull the ring

192
00:14:44.799 --> 00:14:49.039
out of my jacket pocket and see how bright it's glowing.

193
00:14:49.919 --> 00:14:52.519
I can't believe how much it's lighting up the car

194
00:14:53.440 --> 00:14:58.399
like I turned on the compartment light. Then I slide

195
00:14:58.440 --> 00:15:06.960
the ring on, perfect fit. Huh. Now everything's looking I

196
00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:12.679
don't know, kinda different somehow. It's like all the Tricker

197
00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:17.559
treaters are moving in a funny way. I know the

198
00:15:17.639 --> 00:15:22.440
parents sometimes wear costumes when they're bringing their kids around,

199
00:15:22.600 --> 00:15:28.679
but it's like everybody's got costumes on or something. I

200
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:32.200
keep driving until I'm out on State Route one and

201
00:15:32.279 --> 00:15:36.840
heading back to Strickfield Town Center mall the Meyers stores

202
00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:39.720
right across the road from it. I turn on the

203
00:15:39.879 --> 00:15:44.600
radio and get some awesome music playing. Oh yes, I

204
00:15:44.840 --> 00:15:48.960
absolutely love this song. Makes me think about how I'm

205
00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:53.440
missing the Wicked Pedia show at the University. I still

206
00:15:53.480 --> 00:15:55.600
got half a mind to just head on out there.

207
00:15:56.559 --> 00:16:00.840
The heck with getting more candy. Then I'm gonna have

208
00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:04.320
to deal with both Mom and Dad when I'd come home.

209
00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:08.200
They'd definitely be waiting up to start ripping into me.

210
00:16:09.240 --> 00:16:13.279
I keep driving and listening to my station, and that's

211
00:16:13.320 --> 00:16:19.840
when I realize I'm driving past open fields. Did I

212
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.480
pass Meyer and the mall? I wonder out loud. I

213
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.720
could have swore I was watching the road. I know

214
00:16:27.879 --> 00:16:31.480
I ain't lost. I mean, I've been living in Strickfield

215
00:16:31.480 --> 00:16:35.799
my whole life. How could I possibly get lost? I

216
00:16:35.879 --> 00:16:41.080
pull my phone out and look, and what all I'm

217
00:16:41.120 --> 00:16:46.360
seeing is no service, not even the satellite icon. I

218
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:50.679
can't even call mom or send a text just to

219
00:16:50.759 --> 00:16:56.639
make sure I try. Nope, I can't even go online.

220
00:16:56.759 --> 00:16:59.720
I drive a little longer and still don't see the

221
00:16:59.799 --> 00:17:03.960
mall or a big superstore. I figure I gotta have

222
00:17:04.039 --> 00:17:07.720
missed those places. Maybe I got a little too much

223
00:17:07.799 --> 00:17:11.880
into the car radio. Then I stopped the car. When

224
00:17:11.960 --> 00:17:16.680
I realize something else ain't right here, I get out

225
00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:20.359
and look at the road. Wait just a minute, here,

226
00:17:20.880 --> 00:17:24.640
I snap to nobody in particular. Strickfield ain't got no

227
00:17:24.759 --> 00:17:28.480
dirt roads, except maybe in the backwoods. I know I

228
00:17:28.599 --> 00:17:31.720
was driving on Route one. How did I get on

229
00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:34.839
a dirt road? All of a sudden, I blow into

230
00:17:34.880 --> 00:17:39.559
my hand and smell. No, I ain't been drinking even

231
00:17:39.599 --> 00:17:42.799
I ain't stupid enough to be doing that. All Mom

232
00:17:42.839 --> 00:17:45.559
and Dad gotta do is smell even the teensiest bit

233
00:17:45.640 --> 00:17:48.119
of a beer on me, and my life will be

234
00:17:48.200 --> 00:17:52.039
over as I know it. Then I see that ring

235
00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:56.799
still glowing hot on my finger. Heck, it's lighting up

236
00:17:56.920 --> 00:17:59.279
enough for me to see grass and trees on either

237
00:17:59.359 --> 00:18:02.720
side of the dirt road. Now I see the jack

238
00:18:02.759 --> 00:18:07.720
o' lantern patterns themselves on the pumpkin jewel. Suddenly there's

239
00:18:07.759 --> 00:18:14.440
some rustling noises nearby. Who's there? I call out. When

240
00:18:14.480 --> 00:18:18.319
there's more rustling sounds, I gulp and turn to get

241
00:18:18.359 --> 00:18:23.880
back in. What the For the record, I also ain't

242
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:26.160
dumb enough to be smoking pot when I go to

243
00:18:26.240 --> 00:18:31.200
parties or see bands. In other words, I know I

244
00:18:31.240 --> 00:18:36.759
ain't stoned or drunk. Where the heck is the car?

245
00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:42.160
I yell? I know, no, I stopped the car before

246
00:18:42.200 --> 00:18:45.160
I got out, as in I put it in park.

247
00:18:45.759 --> 00:18:50.160
There's no way the car could just disappear like that.

248
00:18:51.440 --> 00:18:54.960
I was near it the whole entire time. I didn't

249
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.480
hear anybody get in and drive off with it. Why

250
00:18:59.519 --> 00:19:03.000
the heck is the car gone?

251
00:19:03.680 --> 00:19:07.359
Don't go away? Weekly, Spooky will be right back.

252
00:19:11.720 --> 00:19:14.839
Oh, I'm gonna have a fun time explaining this to

253
00:19:14.920 --> 00:19:17.799
mom and dad. By the time they get through with me,

254
00:19:18.400 --> 00:19:21.680
I ain't gonna have to worry about graduating Strickfield High

255
00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:25.680
or going to college next fall. I'm gonna be grounded

256
00:19:25.759 --> 00:19:29.519
for the rest of my natural life. And what's even worse,

257
00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:33.480
Phoebe's gonna be laughing it up. While Mom and Dad

258
00:19:33.519 --> 00:19:38.400
are tearing me apart. I groan and look up. Why

259
00:19:38.519 --> 00:19:43.559
is this happening to me tonight? The rustling sound is

260
00:19:43.599 --> 00:19:46.960
almost on me. I turn around and feel my legs

261
00:19:47.000 --> 00:19:51.160
taking over, making me run when I see this, this

262
00:19:51.480 --> 00:19:54.720
thing coming after me. I got a good look at

263
00:19:54.720 --> 00:19:58.359
it before my legs took over. It's like it's mostly

264
00:19:58.440 --> 00:20:01.839
these pumpkin vine It's making its body with the head

265
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:07.079
being a bright jack O lantern. That thing's making this

266
00:20:07.920 --> 00:20:11.960
gravelly grating noise as it moves on its vines to

267
00:20:12.119 --> 00:20:15.519
chase me. I gotta make a quick stop to untie

268
00:20:15.599 --> 00:20:18.960
and get my platform boots off. I can't run in

269
00:20:19.039 --> 00:20:22.920
these heavy things. Boy, do I notice a difference when

270
00:20:22.920 --> 00:20:25.839
I'm running in just my socks. I move into the

271
00:20:25.839 --> 00:20:28.599
grass to get off the dirt road. At least the

272
00:20:28.640 --> 00:20:32.720
grass ain't wet, or I know the heck with it.

273
00:20:33.240 --> 00:20:36.640
I quickly get my socks off and run barefoot, glad

274
00:20:36.680 --> 00:20:40.640
I'm wearing shorts instead of pants. The ring keeps lighting

275
00:20:40.680 --> 00:20:43.640
my way. That's good for me because I can see

276
00:20:43.680 --> 00:20:46.799
where I'm going on the flip side. It's also letting

277
00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:51.039
that thing know where I am. I keep hearing the

278
00:20:51.119 --> 00:20:54.279
rustling sound of those vines and the grating sound as

279
00:20:54.319 --> 00:21:00.400
it's I don't know, roaring at me. Maybe leave me alone,

280
00:21:01.160 --> 00:21:05.880
I yell over my shoulder, nothing doing. That thing still

281
00:21:05.920 --> 00:21:10.319
on my tail. Wait a minute. All I gotta do

282
00:21:10.599 --> 00:21:14.160
is just lose the ring. If I ain't wearing it,

283
00:21:14.200 --> 00:21:17.759
that thing shouldn't be able to see me right Suddenly,

284
00:21:17.799 --> 00:21:20.880
I'm all tangled up and know that thing caught up

285
00:21:20.920 --> 00:21:23.720
to me. I scream when I feel it taking me

286
00:21:23.799 --> 00:21:27.319
down to the grass. That grating sound it's making just

287
00:21:27.720 --> 00:21:32.240
sending chills down my spine. Get off of me, I

288
00:21:32.359 --> 00:21:35.640
cry out. Then I get an out when I feel

289
00:21:35.680 --> 00:21:39.279
I can slip away by losing my jacket. It wasn't

290
00:21:39.319 --> 00:21:42.720
snapped up, so I wriggle a little and come right

291
00:21:42.759 --> 00:21:45.519
out of it. I get out of them vines and

292
00:21:45.640 --> 00:21:49.279
get back to runnin again. I shriek when I hear

293
00:21:49.319 --> 00:21:53.720
that thing grating even louder and know it's coming after

294
00:21:53.839 --> 00:21:58.079
me again. Not thinking twice, I grab hold of the

295
00:21:58.160 --> 00:22:02.359
ring to pull it off. Oh oh no, no, come on,

296
00:22:02.519 --> 00:22:05.480
don't do this to me. I can't get the ring off.

297
00:22:06.079 --> 00:22:09.720
I'm pulling and even turning it. It turns easily, but

298
00:22:10.400 --> 00:22:13.880
it won't move along my finger. I know it didn't

299
00:22:13.880 --> 00:22:15.759
feel the least bit tight when I put it on.

300
00:22:16.599 --> 00:22:19.839
I didn't have to work it. It just slid right on.

301
00:22:21.039 --> 00:22:25.000
Why ain't it coming off now? Seriously, I gotta be

302
00:22:25.079 --> 00:22:29.039
home in bed and having a nightmare. This can't be happening.

303
00:22:29.720 --> 00:22:32.799
I don't care that this is Strickfield, Ohio. There's no

304
00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:36.839
such things as ghosts. There are no haunted houses. All

305
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:40.359
them stories about grim Manor and the Carnivosha State are

306
00:22:40.519 --> 00:22:45.160
just a bunch of stories to tell around summer campfires.

307
00:22:45.599 --> 00:22:49.599
Even the stories on Strickfield Used website are all made up.

308
00:22:50.799 --> 00:22:55.640
None of this is real. Come on, Sheila, wake up.

309
00:22:56.279 --> 00:23:00.079
I yell at the sky. I keep running and running

310
00:23:00.759 --> 00:23:05.240
until I shriek when I trip and fall and roll downward.

311
00:23:06.039 --> 00:23:09.599
I shriek again when I splash into some water and

312
00:23:09.720 --> 00:23:14.960
feel myself moving fast down river. Great Now, I'm probably

313
00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:18.559
gonna get sick after this. It's chilly out here tonight.

314
00:23:19.480 --> 00:23:24.279
Most halloweens usually are in Strickfield. Only reason I was

315
00:23:24.319 --> 00:23:26.880
warm was because of all the run and I was doing.

316
00:23:28.079 --> 00:23:32.880
I move further and further along. Then my eyes are

317
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:37.319
wide open. When I see that thing moving along the bank.

318
00:23:38.480 --> 00:23:40.880
It ain't even looking like it's gotta work hard to

319
00:23:40.960 --> 00:23:43.759
keep up with me. Eventually I make it to the

320
00:23:43.799 --> 00:23:47.680
opposite bank and get out of the water. Then I

321
00:23:47.799 --> 00:23:51.480
keep running and glance over my shoulder to see I'm

322
00:23:51.559 --> 00:23:56.680
leaving that thing behind. I keep running and hope I

323
00:23:56.680 --> 00:23:59.960
don't step on anything that'll cut into my bare feet.

324
00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:04.319
Before long, I come into an area where there's these

325
00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:10.240
small buildings. Where am I now? Is this supposed to

326
00:24:10.279 --> 00:24:15.440
be Hollow Point, that ghost village that's supposedly haunted by

327
00:24:15.440 --> 00:24:20.240
the spirit of a vengeful witch and her groundhog. Nah,

328
00:24:20.640 --> 00:24:24.039
can't be. From what I heard, Hollow Points supposed to

329
00:24:24.079 --> 00:24:28.400
be a whole village with a square in everything. I

330
00:24:28.440 --> 00:24:32.000
see a light on inside a hut and go inside.

331
00:24:33.319 --> 00:24:36.119
My heart starts pounding fast, and I wonder if I

332
00:24:36.160 --> 00:24:40.839
peed my pants when I see these other creatures inside.

333
00:24:42.119 --> 00:24:45.359
I don't even want to describe these things. With the

334
00:24:45.480 --> 00:24:48.640
rings still on my finger. It's bright enough to where

335
00:24:48.640 --> 00:24:54.559
I can see my skin's turning white. I ain't got

336
00:24:54.599 --> 00:24:58.759
time to wonder why Halloween night is one continuous nightmare

337
00:24:58.799 --> 00:25:03.119
for me. When the creatures start coming at me, I

338
00:25:03.240 --> 00:25:07.599
scream again and run back outside. That's when I see

339
00:25:07.640 --> 00:25:12.359
that pumpkin headed thing made it across the water and

340
00:25:12.519 --> 00:25:16.279
found me again. I turn and run through this little

341
00:25:16.359 --> 00:25:21.319
village or whatever you'd call it. More and more fiendish

342
00:25:21.319 --> 00:25:25.880
creatures are coming out and joining the chase. I still

343
00:25:25.920 --> 00:25:30.039
can't get this ring off. I'm almost considering biting right

344
00:25:30.079 --> 00:25:32.960
through my finger. But I don't want to bleed to

345
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:37.839
death and die. I'm hearing a whole lot of groans, grunts,

346
00:25:37.839 --> 00:25:41.599
and roars, and God only knows what else. I keep

347
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:45.319
using the ring to light my way. Before I know it,

348
00:25:45.880 --> 00:25:49.519
I'm right at the edge of a cliff. Seriously, what

349
00:25:49.680 --> 00:25:52.480
part of Strickfield am I in? Right now? Am I

350
00:25:52.759 --> 00:25:58.400
even in Strickfield? I turn around and see the monsters

351
00:25:58.440 --> 00:26:03.440
closing in on me. Leave me alone. I scream at them.

352
00:26:04.640 --> 00:26:07.519
I ain't got a choice. I can't go back the

353
00:26:07.559 --> 00:26:10.799
way I came with them things closing in and the

354
00:26:10.880 --> 00:26:14.720
cliff right behind me. I don't think about it. When

355
00:26:14.759 --> 00:26:20.079
I turn around and jump right off, I scream again.

356
00:26:20.160 --> 00:26:26.480
When I'm fallen, and fallen and fallen UF. I land

357
00:26:26.519 --> 00:26:34.359
on some slope and tumble down, down, down. I'm back

358
00:26:34.400 --> 00:26:39.599
in the river again and moving downstream. And then my

359
00:26:39.759 --> 00:26:45.079
eyes go wide when I'm falling again. I went right

360
00:26:45.119 --> 00:26:49.480
over the falls and splash into the waiting river down below.

361
00:26:51.079 --> 00:26:55.799
I sink all the way down to the bottom and

362
00:26:55.960 --> 00:27:00.599
try to push with my feet, desperately trying to get

363
00:27:00.640 --> 00:27:07.880
back up to the surface. I need air, I need air,

364
00:27:10.559 --> 00:27:14.839
I need air. I push my way back up to

365
00:27:14.920 --> 00:27:18.960
the surface. I take some huge breaths and try to

366
00:27:19.039 --> 00:27:21.640
swim to where I can finally get out of the water.

367
00:27:22.640 --> 00:27:26.680
Now I'm flat on my back and feeling exhausted. I

368
00:27:26.720 --> 00:27:30.480
can't run no more. I can't even make myself get up.

369
00:27:31.240 --> 00:27:35.920
The light from the ring keeps showing me everything, but

370
00:27:36.039 --> 00:27:39.720
I make myself move when I feel deep down that

371
00:27:39.839 --> 00:27:45.079
those things are gonna keep coming after me. It takes

372
00:27:45.119 --> 00:27:47.240
a lot of effort to get back on my feet.

373
00:27:47.960 --> 00:27:50.799
I try to move, but my legs give out and

374
00:27:50.920 --> 00:27:57.000
make me fall again. I'm feeling pain and fatigue seemingly everywhere,

375
00:27:57.640 --> 00:28:03.000
but I know I can't just stay here. Then I

376
00:28:03.119 --> 00:28:07.920
hear those things getting closer. I make myself get up

377
00:28:08.559 --> 00:28:12.880
and fall flat on my chest again. I make myself

378
00:28:12.880 --> 00:28:16.839
get up again, and this time stay on my feet.

379
00:28:17.960 --> 00:28:23.000
I stagger away from the water and keep moving. Since

380
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:26.200
I'm all wet, I try getting the ring off my

381
00:28:26.359 --> 00:28:32.759
finger again. It still won't come off. I keep moving

382
00:28:32.880 --> 00:28:36.920
and groaning in pain. I turn and move through a path.

383
00:28:37.799 --> 00:28:41.440
I keep moving and moving until I find myself in

384
00:28:41.480 --> 00:28:45.799
another little village. I don't even get to wonder if

385
00:28:45.799 --> 00:28:49.319
I ran in circles or not. When other creatures I

386
00:28:49.359 --> 00:28:53.680
ain't never seen before, come out and come after me.

387
00:28:55.279 --> 00:28:58.160
I try turning around and see the head of that

388
00:28:58.319 --> 00:29:05.720
jack o' lantern leading those other monsters from that village.

389
00:29:05.960 --> 00:29:11.519
I'm trapped. I got nowhere left to run. All those creatures,

390
00:29:12.480 --> 00:29:15.000
no two of them are alike when I'm looking at them.

391
00:29:15.680 --> 00:29:20.160
Yet I'm the only human being here? Or am I?

392
00:29:21.720 --> 00:29:27.359
My skin's even whiter now? What's happening to me? I'm

393
00:29:27.400 --> 00:29:32.119
soaking wet and holding myself as I'm shivering. I've got

394
00:29:32.160 --> 00:29:35.400
no idea if these creatures are gonna kill me or what.

395
00:29:36.519 --> 00:29:42.359
I just know I'm completely surrounded. Next thing I know,

396
00:29:43.079 --> 00:29:46.200
I'm being wrapped in those vines by that jack o

397
00:29:46.319 --> 00:29:51.200
lantern looking monster. I scream for what'll probably be the

398
00:29:51.279 --> 00:29:55.920
last time when I feel myself being brought down to

399
00:29:56.039 --> 00:30:01.799
the ground. I don't even fight anymore. I'm too tired

400
00:30:01.880 --> 00:30:06.279
to even move. I'm in so much pain. Now I'm

401
00:30:06.319 --> 00:30:09.680
wishing I would have just shut up and did what

402
00:30:09.759 --> 00:30:14.240
Mom said. But it's much too late for that. Now,

403
00:30:15.279 --> 00:30:19.240
when everything goes full dark.

404
00:30:20.799 --> 00:30:25.559
Did you hear that? Better check the locks on your doors. Weakly, spooky,

405
00:30:25.759 --> 00:30:26.839
We'll be right back.

406
00:30:29.079 --> 00:30:33.640
Suddenly, I opened my eyes and sit up. I don't

407
00:30:33.680 --> 00:30:37.519
know how long I slept, but I feel a lot

408
00:30:37.599 --> 00:30:42.279
better now. Also, I see I ain't wearing that pumpkin

409
00:30:42.400 --> 00:30:46.839
ring I lifted from Tinker's store anymore. I don't got

410
00:30:46.880 --> 00:30:51.640
no idea when or how it came off. Somehow, I

411
00:30:51.720 --> 00:30:56.200
can still see everything like I was still wearing that ring.

412
00:30:57.640 --> 00:31:00.880
I turn and get off the bed, which feels like

413
00:31:00.960 --> 00:31:04.720
it's stuffed full of something. I just know it doesn't

414
00:31:04.759 --> 00:31:08.359
look like my own bed back home in Strickfield. I

415
00:31:08.400 --> 00:31:11.079
think I'm in one of those huts from that village

416
00:31:11.119 --> 00:31:18.079
I ran into. Am I still wherever here is? I

417
00:31:18.119 --> 00:31:22.400
see the mirror and go to it. I gulp when

418
00:31:22.400 --> 00:31:28.400
I see I'm completely changed. I'm still wearing my clothes

419
00:31:28.480 --> 00:31:34.400
from when those things finally got me, but now I'm

420
00:31:34.440 --> 00:31:39.279
not only chalk white, but my eyes It's like I

421
00:31:39.319 --> 00:31:43.799
got two dark holes where my pretty green eyes used

422
00:31:43.839 --> 00:31:49.359
to be. I also got lots of sharp teeth and

423
00:31:49.519 --> 00:31:55.960
silver hair. I know now I ain't human no more.

424
00:31:57.640 --> 00:32:03.079
I'm really really hung right now. When I see the

425
00:32:03.160 --> 00:32:06.480
table in the hut is set, I move right to

426
00:32:06.599 --> 00:32:11.039
it and see all this weird looking meat on it,

427
00:32:11.799 --> 00:32:16.160
and a cup and pitcher filled with a red liquid.

428
00:32:17.720 --> 00:32:21.440
Then I pick up some meat and start eating it.

429
00:32:22.799 --> 00:32:26.480
I think whatever this food is was put here for me.

430
00:32:27.400 --> 00:32:32.960
Since whatever I'm eating tastes real good, I think it's

431
00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:37.319
also what I'm supposed to eat from now on. What

432
00:32:37.519 --> 00:32:43.079
happened to me? Why am I something else? Now? What

433
00:32:43.279 --> 00:32:46.000
could I have eaten or drank to make me change

434
00:32:46.039 --> 00:32:53.480
into what I am now? I got no idea. Deep down,

435
00:32:53.559 --> 00:32:58.720
I feel that whatever I changed into, well, I don't

436
00:32:58.720 --> 00:33:06.039
belong to my world no more. Then I feel I

437
00:33:06.079 --> 00:33:11.279
ain't alone. And see that Jack O'Lantern thing looking in

438
00:33:11.480 --> 00:33:15.359
at me. It don't move to come after me. Now

439
00:33:16.839 --> 00:33:20.519
now more of those things that chased me down are

440
00:33:20.599 --> 00:33:24.920
looking at me like they know I'm one of them.

441
00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:30.039
Now makes me wonder if these other creatures used to

442
00:33:30.079 --> 00:33:36.279
be human themselves? Will I ever know? As I embrace

443
00:33:36.440 --> 00:33:49.279
my new life? Epilogue Isley Tinker had known that Sheila

444
00:33:49.400 --> 00:33:54.319
Cantrell stole the Halloween Ring, even though he was on

445
00:33:54.440 --> 00:33:59.480
the phone when she had done it. In fact, Tinker

446
00:33:59.599 --> 00:34:04.519
never maid any attempt to stop her, nor did he

447
00:34:04.599 --> 00:34:08.360
stop any of the others who thought they could easily

448
00:34:08.480 --> 00:34:13.400
steal that ring. This is what happens when you take

449
00:34:13.559 --> 00:34:19.480
things you didn't pay for. Tinker said out loud that

450
00:34:19.599 --> 00:34:23.800
glowing pumpkin ring was simply too good of a temptation,

451
00:34:24.440 --> 00:34:29.440
wasn't it no matter? He placed the ring back in

452
00:34:29.519 --> 00:34:33.880
its open case, where it had been in past times before.

453
00:34:35.159 --> 00:34:38.679
I know it won't be long before another foolish mortal

454
00:34:39.119 --> 00:34:44.079
thinks they'll get away with stealing this ring. Tinker knew

455
00:34:44.639 --> 00:34:49.920
exactly what the ring was capable of. The victim would

456
00:34:49.960 --> 00:34:54.880
place it on their finger easily enough. From there, the

457
00:34:55.000 --> 00:34:58.840
ring would remain on the victim's finger while its energies

458
00:34:58.920 --> 00:35:05.239
worked to transform its wearer into their new form. In

459
00:35:05.320 --> 00:35:10.239
the case of Sheila Cantrell, she was transformed into what

460
00:35:10.480 --> 00:35:16.599
was a reflection of her deepest, darkest nightmares. There were

461
00:35:16.719 --> 00:35:20.679
no names for any of the individual creatures that the

462
00:35:20.800 --> 00:35:25.800
ring had created from the former mortals. Each of them

463
00:35:26.119 --> 00:35:31.000
had been transformed and now lived in an area of

464
00:35:31.039 --> 00:35:35.400
the Night Realm. Once each victim had placed the ring

465
00:35:35.599 --> 00:35:42.440
upon their finger, they were immediately transported there, unless they

466
00:35:42.440 --> 00:35:46.719
could find a portal back. These creatures would remain in

467
00:35:46.760 --> 00:35:53.400
the night Realm and never return. Whatever the case, it

468
00:35:53.480 --> 00:35:57.840
didn't make any difference to Isley Tinker. Once he had

469
00:35:57.920 --> 00:36:01.960
found this cursed ring on an excursion into one of

470
00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:07.800
the ghost villages not far from Strickfield several years ago.

471
00:36:07.920 --> 00:36:11.360
The ring was hidden in a cavern pointed out by

472
00:36:11.400 --> 00:36:15.440
the drawings in one of the huts. Tinker would have

473
00:36:15.519 --> 00:36:20.679
no problem finding and claiming the ring and learning what

474
00:36:20.840 --> 00:36:26.519
it could do. Halloween was over in Strickfield for another year.

475
00:36:27.559 --> 00:36:32.639
Tinker smiled to himself when he saw Sheila Cantrell's former

476
00:36:32.760 --> 00:36:39.159
family walking around inside the mall. The parents never even

477
00:36:39.360 --> 00:36:44.239
considered going into Tinker's shop, in spite of the little

478
00:36:44.280 --> 00:36:48.400
girl telling them that she and her older sister had

479
00:36:48.480 --> 00:36:55.800
visited there the day before. But Sheila Cantrell herself was

480
00:36:55.920 --> 00:37:01.760
never seen in any part of Feltner County again. Only

481
00:37:01.840 --> 00:37:05.920
the family vehicle she had been driving was found in

482
00:37:06.000 --> 00:37:10.559
a ditch just off State Route one the next morning.

483
00:37:11.639 --> 00:37:16.559
Soon two female high school students entered Tinkers and were

484
00:37:16.599 --> 00:37:22.679
looking around for anything on clearance for Halloween. Tinker said

485
00:37:23.199 --> 00:37:27.000
he didn't have anything. When he saw he wouldn't have

486
00:37:27.199 --> 00:37:31.920
to help them any further, he went in back. That

487
00:37:33.000 --> 00:37:37.079
was when one of the students lifted the ring out

488
00:37:37.079 --> 00:37:40.599
of its holder, thinking it would be easy to get

489
00:37:40.639 --> 00:37:45.599
away with taking it, the student conveniently let it drop

490
00:37:46.440 --> 00:37:53.360
into her purse. From there, the students both left Tinkers.

491
00:37:54.000 --> 00:37:58.920
A moment later, Tinker glanced out from the back and

492
00:37:59.039 --> 00:38:06.239
knew the Night Realm would soon have another inhabitant. All

493
00:38:06.280 --> 00:38:11.119
that student needed to do was put on the ring,

494
00:38:15.519 --> 00:38:22.199
and that my Spookys was one fateful Halloween by Rob Fields,

495
00:38:22.599 --> 00:38:27.039
A reminder that some tricks can't be undone, no matter

496
00:38:27.079 --> 00:38:31.960
how much candy you hand out. But before you drift off,

497
00:38:32.360 --> 00:38:36.639
I should probably warn you about something. Every now and then,

498
00:38:36.800 --> 00:38:41.320
something strange slips into our feed. I don't schedule it,

499
00:38:41.519 --> 00:38:46.199
I don't announce it. It just appears tomorrow. If you listen,

500
00:38:46.320 --> 00:38:50.360
you might hear the crackle of an old transmission, whispered

501
00:38:50.440 --> 00:38:55.199
voices from another time, a man begging for forgiveness, a

502
00:38:55.280 --> 00:38:59.719
woman who swears she saw something that wasn't there, and

503
00:38:59.760 --> 00:39:04.119
the sound of well, you'll have to hear it for yourself.

504
00:39:04.559 --> 00:39:08.960
All I know is it's an unknown broadcast. I don't

505
00:39:09.000 --> 00:39:12.400
know where it comes from. I just know it's coming.

506
00:39:13.199 --> 00:39:16.800
So make sure you're subscribed and tune in tomorrow if

507
00:39:16.840 --> 00:39:20.440
you dare. Just don't ask me how it got here.

508
00:39:20.800 --> 00:39:23.199
And remember you can support the show by going to

509

510
00:39:26.719 --> 00:39:30.440
extra special thank you to our Patreon podcast boosters, folks

511
00:39:30.440 --> 00:39:32.719

512
00:39:32.800 --> 00:39:34.960
names at the end of the show, and they are

513
00:39:35.280 --> 00:39:39.719
Johnny Nix, Kate and Lulu, Jessica Fuller, Mike Iss, Skewey,

519
00:39:54.599 --> 00:39:57.320
dollars a month or higher. It really helps us keep

520
00:39:57.360 --> 00:40:01.239
the show going and we're very great. But now it's

521
00:40:01.360 --> 00:40:03.039
time for me to get back to work. There's so

522
00:40:03.159 --> 00:40:06.719
much more spooky as we dive into the second third

523
00:40:06.760 --> 00:40:10.920
of October. So for myself, for my executive producers Rob

524
00:40:10.960 --> 00:40:15.360
Fields and Bobbletopia dot Com, my producer Dan Wilder, and

525
00:40:15.480 --> 00:40:19.199
my creepy composer Ray Maddis, I will talk at you

526
00:40:19.960 --> 00:40:20.639
very soon.

527
00:40:21.800 --> 00:40:23.280
Thank you for listening.

528
00:40:23.960 --> 00:40:27.679
Make sure to find your way back next week, but

529
00:40:27.840 --> 00:40:32.840
for now you are safe trust me,
