00:00:09.519 --> 00:00:14.199
My dear, good to see you back again for a
2
00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:20.719
little chill to go with your evening. Oh what's that?
3
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:21.280
Well?
4
00:00:21.920 --> 00:00:25.320
I suppose you'll just have to wait and find out.
5
00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:31.519
Won't you please have a seat, make yourself at at home?
6
00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:39.880
I suppose that word is apt, although sometimes appearances are
7
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:43.520
not all they are cracked up to be, are they.
8
00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:45.240
No?
9
00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:55.759
Sometimes safety is really danger, sometimes home is really a prison.
10
00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:01.399
But of course the most andress of all was when
11
00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:05.680
I realized the lady was a tiger.

00:01:08.120 --> 00:01:14.200
W DAF Kansas City, Dan Henry WBAF Local News eleven.

the incident is not known.

Police are still investigating.
27
00:01:50.840 --> 00:01:53.319
A class action suit against the Kansas City, Missouri Board
28
00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:55.680
of Education and the Kansas City Teachers Union has been
29
00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:59.120
filed on the docket of US District Court Judge Elmo Hunter.
30
00:01:59.480 --> 00:02:01.640
The suit was filed on behalf of his sons by
31
00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:04.319
the father of two boys who attend Southwest High School,
32
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:07.719
asking the judge to order schools opened and teachers to

halt the strike. A hearing was set for April twenty fifth.
34
00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:13.719
Norman Hudson, president of the Kansas City Teachers Union, sits

in jail tonight, his first and attend day contempt of
36

court sentence, and all negotiations between teachers and the board
37
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:23.039
are being handled by a federal mediator in Kansas City.
38
00:02:23.159 --> 00:02:26.800
Kansas teacher talks are to resume immediately, according to Superintendent
39
00:02:26.800 --> 00:02:30.080
of Schools doctor O. L. Plucker, but negotiations between the
40
00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:34.000
NEAA representing Shawn Emission teachers and that district school board
41
00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:37.719
appear to have been stalemated, with teachers apparently demanding more
42
00:02:37.800 --> 00:02:40.719
than the ten and a half percent increase reportedly offered
43
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:43.960
by the board. WDAF News Time eleven o'clock.

We do not approve of people being stopped at fripp

Of rack men.
58
00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:34.280
Officer Byrd's objection came as five black civic leaders filed
59

a class action suit saying the tactics of searching blacks
60
00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:41.680
who matched the Zebra killer's description in San Francisco are unconstitutional.

him to issue news releases on Watergate that he considered

145
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:44.080
For the next hour, imagine that you are Larry Fielding,
146
00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.360
a thirty two year old newspaper man caught in a

you sneaked into my hotel room.
151
00:08:59.399 --> 00:08:59.919
You're a fool.
152
00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:03.240
You must know that the police are looking for you
153
00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:04.519
and they'll be here any minute.
154
00:09:04.600 --> 00:09:06.960
Well, you're here now, and I still want to know
155
00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.080
who you are, if that's so important.
156
00:09:09.159 --> 00:09:10.480
My name is Carol Johnson.
157
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.559
And when I tell you I know all about the
158
00:09:13.639 --> 00:09:16.960
murder of Dave Wilson, maybe you'll believe that I'm here
159
00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:20.679
to help you.

00:09:45.600 --> 00:09:47.039
I'll be back shortly.
166
00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:48.320
With that one.
167
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:49.120
Hi.
168
00:09:49.480 --> 00:09:53.480
I'm Goldilocks, miss Goldiloxe, if you please, And I'm a

there's not that much taste testing in porridge these days.
173
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:11.480
There used to be once upon a time.
174
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:14.720
I mean, that's how this miss got into the biz.

00:10:18.919 --> 00:10:22.639
many diet drinks going sugar free. I've been really busy
177
00:10:22.759 --> 00:10:27.000
conducting taste tests, a rather unbearable.
178
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:27.559
Assignment, to be sure.
179
00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:33.720
But then I discovered sugar free Diet seven up, Fresh, Natural, delicious.
180
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.000
My only problem is that sugar free Diet seven up
181
00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:40.799
tastes so good that it broke my Goldilock's diet.
182
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:41.639
Drink taste Demeter.
183
00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:45.799
Well, sugar free Diet seven up certainly has my seal
184
00:10:45.879 --> 00:10:46.600
of approval.
185
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:49.559
This one's just right.
186
00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:54.679
Don't let anyone con you into thinking it's wrong to
187
00:10:54.720 --> 00:10:58.080
turn in a heroin pusher. You're not riting. You're doing
188
00:10:58.159 --> 00:11:01.039
your part to wipe out one of the most insidious
189
00:11:01.080 --> 00:11:03.360
epidemics racking our country today.
190
00:11:03.960 --> 00:11:05.480
So don't let anyone kid you.
191
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:08.600
If you really care about the quality of life, if
192
00:11:08.679 --> 00:11:12.399
you really care about improving society, you'll do everything you
193
00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:15.440
can to get the heroin pusher off the street and
194
00:11:15.559 --> 00:11:19.200
into jail where he belongs. If you have information about
195
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:22.919
a drug pusher, use the heroin Hotline. The number is
196
00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:26.480
eight OO three six eight five three sixty three. That's
197
00:11:26.519 --> 00:11:30.000
toll free from anywhere in the country. The number again
198
00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:33.399
is eight O three six eight five three sixty three.
199
00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:37.279
A trained operator will answer your call, take your information
200
00:11:37.720 --> 00:11:41.120
and pass it on to experience federal agents who will investigate.
201
00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:44.919
You'll make your own special contribution toward helping us wipe
202
00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:48.759
out what President Nixon has called public Enemy Number one.
203
00:11:49.279 --> 00:12:03.879
Call eight oo three six eight five three sixty three.
204
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:09.519
Walking is great exercise, and with good weather can also
205
00:12:09.600 --> 00:12:13.799
be great fun. But not when you've just been fired
206
00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:17.240
by the editor of the newspaper for which you've worked happily.
207
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:22.399
For five years. Larry Fielding has been walking aimlessly.
208
00:12:21.879 --> 00:12:26.200
For two hours, trying to figure out why Horace Finley,
209
00:12:26.639 --> 00:12:30.000
the editor, and his boss, had refused to give him
210
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:35.440
any reason for his dismissal. Tormented by his frustrating thoughts
211
00:12:35.480 --> 00:12:39.840
and tired, Larry sits down on a park bench to think.
212
00:12:41.080 --> 00:12:44.840
He is so deep in thought he is unaware of
213
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.120
three men who suddenly surround him. Larry has only to
214
00:12:49.159 --> 00:12:52.120
look at them to know that he is in trouble.
215
00:12:52.759 --> 00:12:55.639
He tries to get up, is pushed back down, and
216
00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:57.320
the men start to beat him up.
217
00:12:59.240 --> 00:13:04.080
Take my money, leave me alone, will If you want money,
218
00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:06.399
I don't get told of you, you can have it.
219
00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:14.799
Help Calling for help when you're being mugged in a
220
00:13:14.799 --> 00:13:19.159
Big City park is sometimes as helpful as trying to
221
00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:22.600
catch hold of a window sill in a thirty story fall.
222
00:13:23.799 --> 00:13:28.320
But this time there was a miracle. A stranger has
223
00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:30.799
seen the attack and rushes to help.
224
00:13:33.799 --> 00:13:38.559
They come shack and I show you that you need
225
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:47.279
to listen. Oh took care of them. They're gone. Oh
226
00:13:47.440 --> 00:13:51.559
let me help you will. Thanks a lot. I tell
227
00:13:51.600 --> 00:13:56.519
you I was in real trouble, my pleasure. Did they
228
00:13:56.559 --> 00:13:57.519
get your wallet?
229
00:13:57.519 --> 00:13:59.960
No, no, no, no, I got a lot of bruise,
230
00:14:00.200 --> 00:14:01.240
but they didn't get a thing.
231
00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:06.559
Say you're a pretty good scrapper for a guy my age.
232
00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:11.279
Well yeah, yeah, what are you a karate expert?
233
00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:15.799
Just keep myself in shape? You sure do. Listen. Can
234
00:14:15.879 --> 00:14:18.639
I do something for you to show you really meant thanks?
235
00:14:19.080 --> 00:14:22.559
You certainly can. How about coffee? Oh sure, sure, but
236
00:14:22.919 --> 00:14:25.840
that's nothing. What I meant was I know what you meant.
237
00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:30.600
My name's Dave Wilson. Oh good, I'm Larry Fielding. Oh
238
00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:39.480
come on, Larry, let's have a cup of coffee.
239
00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:42.799
You know. I still can't get over the way you
240
00:14:42.919 --> 00:14:44.080
tore into those guys.
241
00:14:44.279 --> 00:14:47.799
I was a commander in World War two. World War two,
242
00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:49.879
did you think I.
243
00:14:49.879 --> 00:14:52.320
Was in the Civil War. No, not mean that.
244
00:14:52.480 --> 00:14:54.840
It's just a young fellow like you. World War Two
245
00:14:54.919 --> 00:14:57.279
might as well have been in the last century. It
246
00:14:57.320 --> 00:15:00.240
was only thirty some odd years ago. You know, I know,
247
00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:03.279
I know, after all, I was in the newspaper business. Yeah,
248
00:15:03.559 --> 00:15:05.720
you know that's stuff that you told me about losing
249
00:15:05.759 --> 00:15:08.000
your job. What are you gonna do? I don't know,
250
00:15:08.519 --> 00:15:09.639
look around for another one.
251
00:15:10.440 --> 00:15:12.559
What bothers me is the way my editor let me go,
252
00:15:12.720 --> 00:15:15.519
no explanations. You know we were friends. Do you think
253
00:15:15.559 --> 00:15:17.600
he'd at least tell me why he fired me.
254
00:15:17.879 --> 00:15:21.960
Those things happen. Stop torturing yourself and begin making plan.
255
00:15:22.279 --> 00:15:24.600
Not until I get this thing straightened on my own mind.
256
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:27.000
I think I'll call my editor at a home tonight, and.
257
00:15:27.120 --> 00:15:30.919
I've got a better idea. Go out and get drunk, huh.
258
00:15:30.919 --> 00:15:36.039
I know, how about a trip to Paris? Are you
259
00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:38.360
putting me on? I'm serious? Or what?
260
00:15:38.440 --> 00:15:41.600
Are you a scout for contestants for some kind of
261
00:15:41.720 --> 00:15:45.600
TV quistion? You know, I am a man sitting on
262
00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:49.399
a couple of hundred thousand dollars and I need a guy.
263
00:15:49.399 --> 00:15:53.200
Just like you. Now. Look, look, I'm a newspaper man.
264
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:56.120
Anytime a stranger starts talking about a trip to Paris
265
00:15:56.120 --> 00:15:57.600
and a couple of hundred thousand dollars.
266
00:15:57.639 --> 00:15:59.799
I walk away without even listening.
267
00:15:59.840 --> 00:16:02.320
Here, even if the man just happened to maybe save
268
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:04.559
you from being mugged, robbed and beaten up.
269
00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:08.279
Okay, all right, I'll listen, but believe me that'll be
270
00:16:08.320 --> 00:16:09.639
it fair enough.
271
00:16:10.639 --> 00:16:13.000
First, here's my currn.
272
00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:17.120
Oh h, David Wilson Calridge Imports.
273
00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:17.840
I never heard of him.
274
00:16:18.279 --> 00:16:21.159
You can call and check me out. I told you
275
00:16:21.240 --> 00:16:22.519
I was in World War two.
276
00:16:22.759 --> 00:16:26.039
Oh look, I'm grateful to you, but you're wasting your time.
277
00:16:26.360 --> 00:16:27.840
Why don't you shut up and listen.
278
00:16:29.159 --> 00:16:32.039
You've probably heard about the millions of dollars in artworks
279
00:16:32.039 --> 00:16:36.960
and precious jewels that the Gis liberated during the last
280
00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:37.759
days of the war.
281
00:16:37.960 --> 00:16:40.360
Liberated, sure you well, I've heard story. Well most of
282
00:16:40.360 --> 00:16:41.960
them are true.
283
00:16:42.200 --> 00:16:46.039
One that I know in particular certainly is did you
284
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:50.639
ever hear the Lancer collection? Lancella the hump de Lanceir
285
00:16:50.840 --> 00:16:54.279
came from an old French family, and the Lancair collection
286
00:16:54.519 --> 00:16:59.039
is a fabulous assortment of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and other
287
00:16:59.200 --> 00:17:03.240
precious storms which were seized by the Nazis when they
288
00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:07.680
swept through France in nineteen forty A pell of mine,
289
00:17:07.720 --> 00:17:10.759
not a commando, happened to come upon the collection when
290
00:17:10.759 --> 00:17:13.720
the Americans were driving the Germans back in forty four.
291
00:17:14.119 --> 00:17:17.319
Women, and he liberated it exactly.
292
00:17:18.039 --> 00:17:24.839
He and a distinguished Frenchman named Henretil, Professor Auretel, the archeologist.
293
00:17:24.880 --> 00:17:29.079
That's the man. Oh, come on, he wouldn't You were
294
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:29.839
saying something?
295
00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:35.599
No, nothing, you were not say He wouldn't get involved
296
00:17:35.680 --> 00:17:37.279
in anything crooked, weren't you?
297
00:17:38.119 --> 00:17:42.119
Yeah, something like that. You're right, he wouldn't. But he
298
00:17:42.160 --> 00:17:42.680
was younger.
299
00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:46.720
The world was quite different then, and my g I
300
00:17:46.880 --> 00:17:51.759
Pall was a most persuasive guy. They decided to bury
301
00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:57.240
the Lancair collection. They did, They drew a map, and
302
00:17:57.319 --> 00:18:01.480
today Professor Tiel is the only possessor of that map.
303
00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:05.279
And what happened to your nameless friend?
304
00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:11.400
He's dead. Professor Teel wants to return to Jewles. But
305
00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:14.319
that's easy, isn't it not? If the professor doesn't want
306
00:18:14.359 --> 00:18:17.200
embarrassing questions asked about how he came by that that
307
00:18:17.319 --> 00:18:18.240
happened the first place?
308
00:18:18.240 --> 00:18:20.559
Oh what about you?
309
00:18:21.480 --> 00:18:25.039
Tailridge Imports, highly respected and reputable importing firm.
310
00:18:25.920 --> 00:18:28.079
I want to keep it that way Oh, so do
311
00:18:28.200 --> 00:18:30.279
I even though I've just been fired.
312
00:18:30.680 --> 00:18:33.640
You haven't heard what I'm asking you to do. Well,
313
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:38.799
what come with me to Paris. You're writing a story
314
00:18:38.799 --> 00:18:43.200
on Professor Teal. He's good material. You'll grant me that. Yes, yeah,
315
00:18:43.279 --> 00:18:46.920
you'll interview it naturally. During the course of that interview,
316
00:18:47.480 --> 00:18:49.240
he'll give you a slip of paper, which is a
317
00:18:49.319 --> 00:18:51.599
map showing the location of the jewels.
318
00:18:52.359 --> 00:18:56.119
You'll later deliver it to me. That's all you have
319
00:18:56.200 --> 00:18:57.319
to do.
320
00:18:57.359 --> 00:19:02.960
You mention something about sitting on hundreds of thousands of dollars.
321
00:19:03.079 --> 00:19:05.720
I'm sorry, the Lancer collection is worth that and more.
322
00:19:06.359 --> 00:19:10.400
I'm sitting on it. I intend to return the jewels
323
00:19:11.079 --> 00:19:14.160
and collect the reward. If you want to share in that,
324
00:19:14.200 --> 00:19:16.559
you deserve it.
325
00:19:19.640 --> 00:19:20.440
Missus Wilson.
326
00:19:21.000 --> 00:19:23.880
The report is positive. Feeling has agreed to go to
327
00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:26.960
Paris with me. He bought the story about picking up
328
00:19:26.960 --> 00:19:31.519
a map showing the location of the Lancair collection operation successful.
329
00:19:38.200 --> 00:19:39.960
You'd better be on your way, Larry, your do at
330
00:19:40.039 --> 00:19:43.519
Festials in ten minutes. I suppose it's too late to
331
00:19:43.559 --> 00:19:46.799
back out. Uh, you can always back out, Larry, but
332
00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:49.640
I don't think you will. There's really nothing to it,
333
00:19:49.799 --> 00:19:52.400
make it look like a normal interview. Take notes.
334
00:19:53.119 --> 00:19:55.359
The professor will give you the map, Slip it in
335
00:19:55.359 --> 00:19:57.599
with your notes, bring it back to me here.
336
00:19:58.079 --> 00:20:07.480
I'll be waiting, okay, Larry, Yes, relax, sure thing, I'll sleep.
337
00:20:07.519 --> 00:20:15.920
It would miss your mind if.
338
00:20:15.799 --> 00:20:16.480
I join him.
339
00:20:16.519 --> 00:20:18.400
I wouldn't mind at all. But I don't think I'm
340
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:19.319
what you're looking for.
341
00:20:19.559 --> 00:20:22.599
But mens, exactly what I think? Exactly?
342
00:20:22.759 --> 00:20:25.039
And just what is it you're seeking to.
343
00:20:25.119 --> 00:20:26.839
Warn you that you are in grave danger?
344
00:20:27.839 --> 00:20:29.920
Why don't you come off it with that phony accent?
345
00:20:30.079 --> 00:20:31.680
You got something to say to me? Say it?
346
00:20:31.799 --> 00:20:32.759
Wouldn't you buy me?
347
00:20:32.759 --> 00:20:36.480
If I know? Sure? That's all po please?
348
00:20:37.880 --> 00:20:38.599
So it is very.
349
00:20:38.559 --> 00:20:41.599
Difficult for I do play a role as you have guessed,
350
00:20:42.039 --> 00:20:45.359
and I am not here by chance, you must leave.
351
00:20:45.559 --> 00:20:47.960
And quickly you're well, nonsie.
352
00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:51.519
If not for me, it's for the lady and for you.
353
00:20:52.200 --> 00:20:53.640
I have a knife.
354
00:20:56.279 --> 00:20:57.279
Which he's going to die.
355
00:20:57.640 --> 00:20:59.640
Would I say, there'll be no problem?
356
00:21:00.400 --> 00:21:03.640
Simply put his head down gently on the table, so
357
00:21:04.839 --> 00:21:07.039
and people will see another broken tourist.
358
00:21:12.319 --> 00:21:16.039
Your name is Larry Fielding, You're twenty eight years old,
359
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:20.640
and you're feeling marvelous. You have just completed a fascinating
360
00:21:20.680 --> 00:21:24.599
interview with Professor Henry Teale. And you have the paper
361
00:21:24.599 --> 00:21:26.799
that you're going to hand over to your friend who's
362
00:21:26.839 --> 00:21:30.200
waiting at leedri Mago. You see him at the table
363
00:21:30.240 --> 00:21:33.599
where you left him. His head is down, but you're
364
00:21:33.640 --> 00:21:34.400
not concerned.
365
00:21:34.519 --> 00:21:38.759
Dave, Dave, wake up. I saw the professor. What, monsieur?
366
00:21:39.279 --> 00:21:40.720
What has happened? Well, I don't know.
367
00:21:40.720 --> 00:21:43.960
I came back to meet my friendly. I guess he's
368
00:21:44.000 --> 00:21:50.519
past hour, monsieur. Look, this man has been murdered, stepped
369
00:21:50.640 --> 00:21:51.119
to death.
370
00:21:52.279 --> 00:21:55.519
You will wait here for the police. I will, I
371
00:21:55.559 --> 00:21:56.880
will not. I'm getting out of here.
372
00:22:04.119 --> 00:22:04.839
Who is there?
373
00:22:05.519 --> 00:22:07.359
Design open up?
374
00:22:09.240 --> 00:22:09.920
What's the matter?
375
00:22:10.319 --> 00:22:14.920
What happened the other American? The young one? He got away?
376
00:22:15.599 --> 00:22:18.720
You let him go, You predict Wren, now what?
377
00:22:19.279 --> 00:22:21.519
He'll probably go back to his room with Dauphin. You
378
00:22:21.559 --> 00:22:22.000
will check.
379
00:22:22.240 --> 00:22:23.799
But aren't the police looking for him?
380
00:22:23.880 --> 00:22:26.400
I hope so I gave him a complete description.
381
00:22:26.559 --> 00:22:28.359
And what do I say to them if they find
382
00:22:28.359 --> 00:22:29.000
me in his room?
383
00:22:29.200 --> 00:22:33.519
Came a beautiful young lady like yourself. Get to him
384
00:22:33.559 --> 00:22:35.359
and find out where the paper is?
385
00:22:48.400 --> 00:22:48.720
All right?
386
00:22:49.200 --> 00:22:53.519
All right? How are you? If I take my hand away?
387
00:22:53.519 --> 00:22:55.960
You promise not to scream? Right?
388
00:22:56.279 --> 00:22:56.480
Right?
389
00:22:56.920 --> 00:22:59.440
Okay, Now, why have you picked the lock in my room?
390
00:23:00.839 --> 00:23:03.880
Never mind, you have to get out of here.
391
00:23:03.960 --> 00:23:06.799
Not did you tell me who you are if that matters.
392
00:23:06.839 --> 00:23:09.680
My name is Carol Johnson. I've been sent here to
393
00:23:09.720 --> 00:23:12.640
help you. I know about the murder of your friend.
394
00:23:12.680 --> 00:23:16.119
Wait a minute, Wait a minute, sent by whom I'll
395
00:23:16.160 --> 00:23:18.920
answer your questions while we're on the way, on.
396
00:23:18.880 --> 00:23:21.880
The way to wear safety. I don't need to run.
397
00:23:22.400 --> 00:23:23.480
I didn't kill anybody.
398
00:23:23.640 --> 00:23:25.400
I'm not about to take off with a strange girl,
399
00:23:25.400 --> 00:23:27.519
particularly not one who's equipped with skeleton keys.
400
00:23:27.680 --> 00:23:36.319
Oh, suit yourself, goodbye.
401
00:23:37.519 --> 00:23:37.839
Come in.
402
00:23:42.519 --> 00:23:47.160
Yes, as spector of Victorio ste Uh, you would please
403
00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:52.319
come with me. What for suspicion of murder of another American?
404
00:23:53.599 --> 00:24:02.559
Monsieur David Wilson inspect to listen? Why would I kill Dave?
405
00:24:02.640 --> 00:24:04.720
I've already told you I had an appointment to meet
406
00:24:04.759 --> 00:24:05.559
Dave at the cafe.
407
00:24:05.599 --> 00:24:07.599
He was waiting for me. When I have walked up
408
00:24:07.599 --> 00:24:09.319
to a man, I just killed and shake him so
409
00:24:09.400 --> 00:24:10.839
that he'd fall down. Make a big scene.
410
00:24:11.359 --> 00:24:14.960
That is your explansion. There is nothing to support it
411
00:24:15.200 --> 00:24:17.839
as well. There's nothing against it either. There is the
412
00:24:17.920 --> 00:24:19.960
world of Louis Gray Louis.
413
00:24:20.720 --> 00:24:21.079
Who's he?
414
00:24:21.599 --> 00:24:24.440
The waiter who attended the table at which mister Whedson
415
00:24:24.519 --> 00:24:27.400
and you said. The only reason that you are not,
416
00:24:27.640 --> 00:24:31.119
as of these moments charged with murder is because you
417
00:24:31.160 --> 00:24:36.119
did the return that much the waiter's testimony supports only.
418
00:24:36.200 --> 00:24:39.200
He says that miss Whedson might very well have been
419
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:43.680
dead shortly after your return, and that you had time
420
00:24:43.880 --> 00:24:44.599
to kill him.
421
00:24:45.319 --> 00:24:48.039
That's a lie. So you say, ah, just check with
422
00:24:48.079 --> 00:24:50.559
Professor Teal. He'll tell you what time I arrived, what
423
00:24:50.599 --> 00:24:51.240
time I left.
424
00:24:51.400 --> 00:24:55.039
We have been trying and there has been no answer.
425
00:24:56.720 --> 00:25:03.960
We may have him on the telephone now hello, eh ah,
426
00:25:04.039 --> 00:25:09.519
so whereever you Elsie? All right, Well, what do you say?
427
00:25:10.359 --> 00:25:15.160
That was not Professor Tilde. That was his apartment and
428
00:25:15.279 --> 00:25:19.880
his servant his servant. There was nobody there when I
429
00:25:19.920 --> 00:25:24.880
saw him. Don't you mean if you saw him, monsieur h.
430
00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:28.279
According to the servant, Professor Till left for an extended
431
00:25:28.319 --> 00:25:32.279
holiday early this morning, and if he's not known when
432
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:34.240
he is expected back.
433
00:25:40.119 --> 00:25:43.720
Your name is Larry Fielding. You're thirty two years old
434
00:25:44.359 --> 00:25:49.359
and you find yourself in prison in Paris, accused of murder.
435
00:25:50.519 --> 00:25:53.079
You know you've been had and you're dealing with forces
436
00:25:53.079 --> 00:25:57.200
that seem beyond your control. You have a million questions,
437
00:25:57.799 --> 00:26:00.400
and the only man who could answer them is the
438
00:26:00.480 --> 00:26:05.039
man you're accused of killing. We'll be back shortly with
439
00:26:05.160 --> 00:26:09.039
that too.
440
00:26:10.200 --> 00:26:12.640
When you drink beer, do you tilt the glass for
441
00:26:12.799 --> 00:26:14.880
long hearty swallows or.
442
00:26:14.920 --> 00:26:17.039
Just tip it and sip it? Well.
443
00:26:17.119 --> 00:26:20.400
Sipping's the thing for wine, but Budweiser beer is a
444
00:26:20.400 --> 00:26:24.759
hearty drink, brood for zest and character. The best way
445
00:26:24.799 --> 00:26:28.480
to enjoy Bud is to drink it, not chug a lug, just.
446
00:26:28.640 --> 00:26:31.160
Man sized beer drinker swallows.
447
00:26:31.839 --> 00:26:36.960
That's when that famous Budweiser taste, smoothness and drinkability really
448
00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:37.480
come through.
449
00:26:38.240 --> 00:26:40.400
Smoothness and drinkability that.
450
00:26:40.440 --> 00:26:45.759
Come only from natural combination and exclusive beechwood aging. Smoothness
451
00:26:45.759 --> 00:26:49.839
and drinkability too good for any half hearted sipping, So
452
00:26:50.119 --> 00:26:50.720
drink up.
453
00:26:52.519 --> 00:26:53.440
You'll see that.
454
00:26:53.519 --> 00:26:58.119
Brewing beer right does make a difference, and that when
455
00:26:58.160 --> 00:27:01.079
you say Budweiser, you've said it all.
456
00:27:03.680 --> 00:27:11.799
And Issa Bush Saint Louis. In nineteen nineteen, someone had
457
00:27:11.839 --> 00:27:12.960
a big idea.
458
00:27:13.200 --> 00:27:16.319
Let's help youth understand big business by starting them in
459
00:27:16.400 --> 00:27:17.359
small businesses of.
460
00:27:17.319 --> 00:27:20.400
Their own and junior Achievement was born.
461
00:27:21.079 --> 00:27:23.839
Each group elected a board of directors, chose a product,
462
00:27:23.920 --> 00:27:27.400
set up a production line, sold, stocked, and went into business.
463
00:27:28.440 --> 00:27:31.240
That year three hundred and fourteen students made and sold
464
00:27:31.279 --> 00:27:40.440
products and learned the business of business. Today, Junior Achievement
465
00:27:40.440 --> 00:27:44.480
has grown to nearly two hundred thousand members. Junior Achievers
466
00:27:44.480 --> 00:27:47.480
are designing and marketing their own products and services, from
467
00:27:47.519 --> 00:27:51.960
cutting boards to printing their organizing sales efforts, writing marketing plans,
468
00:27:52.039 --> 00:27:56.240
calculating profit and loss. Running these small businesses helps junior
469
00:27:56.240 --> 00:28:01.359
achievers understand how big business works. Support achievements where youth
470
00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:18.079
learns the business of business. Hoyo, Local Junior Achievement Office.
471
00:28:19.000 --> 00:28:23.680
To many Americans, Paris means visits to the louver, strolls
472
00:28:23.720 --> 00:28:26.079
along the sand, or fine food.
473
00:28:27.039 --> 00:28:29.359
But to Larry Fielding, it means.
474
00:28:29.160 --> 00:28:33.359
The inside of a prison cell when he sits accused of.
475
00:28:33.359 --> 00:28:34.920
A murder he didn't commit.
476
00:28:36.319 --> 00:28:39.440
Fielding knows he's been caught up in something that involves
477
00:28:39.519 --> 00:28:43.880
more than the recovery of some stolen jewels. However, what
478
00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:47.759
he doesn't realize is that he's the key poem in
479
00:28:47.839 --> 00:28:51.200
a deadly game, and the players are about to make
480
00:28:51.279 --> 00:28:51.920
some moves.
481
00:28:54.359 --> 00:28:59.279
Oh, I don't think it's smart to have me come
482
00:28:59.319 --> 00:29:00.000
here so often.
483
00:29:01.319 --> 00:29:03.119
I would not have sent for you if it were
484
00:29:03.119 --> 00:29:06.920
not necessary. Do you still believe that Fielding knows nothing
485
00:29:06.960 --> 00:29:07.759
about the operation?
486
00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:08.279
I do.
487
00:29:09.000 --> 00:29:10.000
Then where's the document?
488
00:29:10.359 --> 00:29:12.200
Well, we don't know he ever had it doing.
489
00:29:12.759 --> 00:29:16.279
We know he visited till. We know that Wilson waited
490
00:29:16.319 --> 00:29:18.720
for him at let to back go. We know he
491
00:29:18.799 --> 00:29:21.720
came back there. I think it is safe to assume
492
00:29:21.799 --> 00:29:23.920
that he was carrying the plans.
493
00:29:23.759 --> 00:29:26.440
And he didn't have it on him when he was arrested.
494
00:29:26.880 --> 00:29:29.160
Roger arranged to be there when Fielding was brought in
495
00:29:29.200 --> 00:29:32.519
and searched. He says there was nothing on him, but
496
00:29:32.680 --> 00:29:36.559
he wasn't picked up right away exactly. He eventually went
497
00:29:36.599 --> 00:29:40.319
back to his hotel room. As you know, I believe
498
00:29:40.400 --> 00:29:42.720
he has the paper and that he has somehow managed
499
00:29:42.759 --> 00:29:44.039
to hide it.
500
00:29:43.720 --> 00:29:46.400
Ah, it is a snow gold in prison. We shall
501
00:29:46.480 --> 00:29:47.720
do arrange to have him released.
502
00:29:47.880 --> 00:29:49.039
And how do we do that?
503
00:29:49.599 --> 00:29:51.799
We don't you do?
504
00:30:00.880 --> 00:30:07.960
Sit down, mademoiselle, your passport, says Carol Johnson. That's right, Inspector,
505
00:30:08.039 --> 00:30:10.000
and I'm told you are in my office because of
506
00:30:10.039 --> 00:30:13.519
the unfortunate incident in the Cavilli.
507
00:30:13.200 --> 00:30:17.559
De mangoul Yes, Inspector, I just had to come here
508
00:30:17.599 --> 00:30:19.640
to tell you you you have the wrong man.
509
00:30:19.759 --> 00:30:22.039
Ah, And how do you know that?
510
00:30:22.480 --> 00:30:25.680
I'm studying at the Somanne, I visit Li de Magaux
511
00:30:25.720 --> 00:30:26.279
all the time.
512
00:30:26.720 --> 00:30:29.240
I was sitting right there when that man was murdered.51300:30:31.720 --> 00:30:34.799
You saw a man murdered and you did nothing.51400:30:35.119 --> 00:30:37.279
Oh, at the time, I didn't know it was a murder.51500:30:37.799 --> 00:30:39.839
I just thought the man had too much to drink51600:30:40.119 --> 00:30:42.960
or was ill. But the reason I know that you've51700:30:43.039 --> 00:30:45.640
arrested the wrong man is that the murdered man was51800:30:45.720 --> 00:30:50.599
dead before this young American fields or Fielding. Yes, well,51900:30:50.839 --> 00:30:53.480
the man was dead before Fielding ever got to the table.52000:30:54.319 --> 00:30:56.799
Fielding came and shook him, and that was when it52100:30:56.880 --> 00:31:00.279
was discovered that he was dead. I'm prepared to swear52200:31:00.319 --> 00:31:01.160
to that, inspector.52300:31:01.400 --> 00:31:04.680
Of course, you were prepared to swear to this story52400:31:04.799 --> 00:31:06.000
that you have just told me.52500:31:06.400 --> 00:31:08.640
Why not, it's the truth, of.52600:31:08.559 --> 00:31:09.480
Course, mademoiselle.52700:31:10.279 --> 00:31:12.960
Why what a beautiful young lady like your said lie52800:31:13.039 --> 00:31:15.279
to an inspector of the surda.52900:31:16.599 --> 00:31:19.720
I'm not sure that I like the way you say that, inspector,53000:31:21.079 --> 00:31:24.240
But everything will be all right if you release young feelings.53100:31:24.480 --> 00:31:26.720
You have told me you would swear to this statement53200:31:26.839 --> 00:31:27.720
or her was in court.53300:31:28.880 --> 00:31:30.960
Therefore, I have very little choice.53400:31:31.519 --> 00:31:36.440
Oh good, but mademoiselle, I have been the police officer53500:31:36.519 --> 00:31:39.920
for twenty years, long enough to know that witnesses who53600:31:39.960 --> 00:31:43.920
appear late with an annibi for our accused murderer often53700:31:44.079 --> 00:31:48.319
have reason. And I also wish to warn you, mademoiselle,53800:31:49.359 --> 00:31:52.920
but the Suati considers this a very much open case.53900:31:54.400 --> 00:31:58.680
That is the business of the SQUI of one inspector.54000:32:04.039 --> 00:32:06.880
Sure would photow the young lady who's just lit my54100:32:06.920 --> 00:32:09.319
office and do not lose her.54200:32:16.920 --> 00:32:20.799
Hello there, Oh it's you. I want to give me54300:32:20.839 --> 00:32:21.160
a lift.54400:32:21.359 --> 00:32:23.440
Well, I suppose I owe you something for getting me54500:32:23.440 --> 00:32:29.319
out of jail. Taxi, taxi, there we come hopping.54600:32:30.680 --> 00:32:39.880
Oh thanks, uh driver, Hotel Daphine. You look pretty good54700:32:39.880 --> 00:32:43.920
for it, young You look pretty good yourself for come54800:32:43.960 --> 00:32:44.640
to think of it, what.54900:32:44.720 --> 00:32:47.680
Are you an American girl in Paris trying to make55000:32:47.680 --> 00:32:48.079
a living?55100:32:49.160 --> 00:32:51.279
What are you an American in Paris and neat of55200:32:51.319 --> 00:32:54.200
a bath, a drink and some food.55300:32:56.240 --> 00:32:59.720
You know you're not bad looking, Oh.55400:32:59.640 --> 00:33:03.640
Fay, While we seem to be exchanging compliments, can I say,55500:33:03.640 --> 00:33:06.200
you're about the best looking girl I've seen since i've55600:33:06.240 --> 00:33:07.240
been here.55700:33:09.440 --> 00:33:09.839
Thank you.55800:33:11.240 --> 00:33:13.440
No that we like each other so much, don't you55900:33:13.480 --> 00:33:15.839
think it's time we started telling each other the truth.56000:33:17.039 --> 00:33:29.759
Yes, i'll buy back operator. Well, never you speaking? Okay?56100:33:29.839 --> 00:33:31.720
Well, look I phoned the desk about an hour ago56200:33:31.759 --> 00:33:33.200
to get this room straightened up, and.56300:33:33.160 --> 00:33:34.359
So far nothing's happened.56400:33:34.440 --> 00:33:36.960
Now can you please just send someone up so I56500:33:36.960 --> 00:33:37.880
can sleep here tonight?56600:33:38.000 --> 00:33:39.720
Huh, well you're at it. Where's our food?56700:33:40.720 --> 00:33:42.079
Wait a minute, that's a different department.56800:33:42.079 --> 00:33:44.640
Oh I'll have to call room service again.56900:33:45.680 --> 00:33:49.440
Oh maybe you won't have to bother ah uh, entree,57000:33:50.480 --> 00:33:51.319
you do the.57100:33:51.279 --> 00:33:56.279
Shoot you would like me to?57200:33:56.640 --> 00:33:58.480
No, No, thanks, No, I think I can handle it57300:33:58.519 --> 00:34:02.480
myself as you wishes. Wait a minute, don't I know you?57400:34:02.799 --> 00:34:06.519
I think i've seen you before. I'm sure i've seen you.57500:34:07.079 --> 00:34:09.639
Arry is a large city, monsieur. One passes people on57600:34:09.679 --> 00:34:10.320
the streets, and.57700:34:10.639 --> 00:34:11.639
The streets, the streets.57800:34:11.639 --> 00:34:12.000
That's it.57900:34:12.519 --> 00:34:15.000
You're the same guy who was at the cat Do58000:34:15.119 --> 00:34:17.280
I go? Youres mystake? What?58100:34:17.679 --> 00:34:17.880
Hey?58200:34:17.880 --> 00:34:19.360
What have I come back here? I want to talk58300:34:19.400 --> 00:34:19.719
to you.58400:34:19.800 --> 00:34:21.719
Oh no, don't go chasing him down the hall.58500:34:21.840 --> 00:34:24.559
Why not. Listen, Carol, I'm positive he's the same way.58600:34:24.960 --> 00:34:27.920
Just deny it and you can't prove it. But even58700:34:27.960 --> 00:34:30.639
if you could, what do you think it means?58800:34:30.639 --> 00:34:34.800
What it mean? It means? Well? I don't know, but58900:34:34.840 --> 00:34:37.000
if I get to get him to talk, maybe i'd59000:34:37.039 --> 00:34:37.880
find out something.59100:34:38.480 --> 00:34:40.360
I thought you were going to come in.59200:34:40.840 --> 00:34:45.079
Oh yeah, yeah. Listen, have you ever heard of the59300:34:45.159 --> 00:34:48.519
LANs Are Collection? Of course, it's.59400:34:48.400 --> 00:34:51.719
In the Louver. The family of Condolence gave it to59500:34:51.760 --> 00:34:54.880
the museum after it was recovered when the Nazis fled Paris.59600:34:56.719 --> 00:35:00.400
What why does that shake you up so much?59700:35:01.360 --> 00:35:02.519
Because it can't be true.59800:35:03.639 --> 00:35:05.400
Come with me to the Louver and I'll show it59900:35:05.440 --> 00:35:05.760
to you.60000:35:06.519 --> 00:35:09.400
Well that changes everything. Come on, where are we going to?60100:35:09.480 --> 00:35:10.679
The American Console?60200:35:18.000 --> 00:35:24.239
Well, unbelievable, simply unbelievable. Do you know what the console60300:35:24.280 --> 00:35:24.599
told me?60400:35:25.719 --> 00:35:25.880
Oh?60500:35:26.800 --> 00:35:28.639
I predicted it didn't I?60600:35:28.840 --> 00:35:30.840
Yeah, it's true. He didn't want to hear about it60700:35:30.880 --> 00:35:33.280
at all. Just advies me to folk up the whole60800:35:33.320 --> 00:35:36.239
thing and leave France. Incredible for not.60900:35:36.400 --> 00:35:38.639
Really when you understand that he doesn't know what you're61000:35:38.679 --> 00:35:42.199
talking about, but you do some of it.61100:35:43.079 --> 00:35:44.639
Okay, take me back to the hotel.61200:35:45.039 --> 00:35:45.599
Any reason.61300:35:45.760 --> 00:35:49.440
I'm taking the console's advice. If nobody's interested, I'll go61400:35:49.559 --> 00:35:50.480
back to the States.61500:35:55.039 --> 00:35:57.360
Well, now that they've cleaned up the room so nicely,61600:35:57.440 --> 00:35:58.119
you are leaving.61700:35:58.840 --> 00:35:59.840
Well, do you have a.61800:36:01.920 --> 00:36:02.559
More than one?61900:36:04.079 --> 00:36:05.599
I think I'll take them one at a time.62000:36:08.239 --> 00:36:12.880
Number one, give me the paper Professor t gave you.62100:36:14.239 --> 00:36:18.000
Well, it looks like we're finally going to level.62200:36:18.199 --> 00:36:18.800
Where is it?62300:36:19.360 --> 00:36:22.320
Well, first you tell me something. What is it? I62400:36:22.360 --> 00:36:24.079
don't know. End of conversations.62500:36:24.159 --> 00:36:25.000
Mary listened to me.62600:36:26.360 --> 00:36:30.360
I work for Colonel Blake Military Intelligence. I was assigned62700:36:30.360 --> 00:36:31.199
to this operation.62800:36:31.800 --> 00:36:32.679
What operation?62900:36:33.079 --> 00:36:35.760
All I was told was that Dave Wilson, who also63000:36:35.840 --> 00:36:38.159
works for US, was coming over here with you, and63100:36:38.199 --> 00:36:40.400
that you were to get something from Professor to you63200:36:40.440 --> 00:36:41.239
and give it to Dave.63300:36:41.960 --> 00:36:43.840
TiAl worked with you too.63400:36:44.000 --> 00:36:47.360
He did, but now his cover is blown and I63500:36:47.400 --> 00:36:48.360
don't know where he is.63600:36:48.599 --> 00:36:49.480
Who killed Wilson?63700:36:49.519 --> 00:36:49.960
I don't know.63800:36:50.039 --> 00:36:52.119
It could have been any one of three or four63900:36:52.239 --> 00:36:53.199
foreign powers.64000:36:53.519 --> 00:36:56.800
And the only reason I'm alive is because somebody wants64100:36:56.840 --> 00:36:57.239
the paper.64200:36:57.320 --> 00:36:59.440
That's right, And if I give it to you, then64300:36:59.440 --> 00:37:01.280
there's really no reason not to kill me.64400:37:01.400 --> 00:37:04.039
Oh give it to me. I'll get it to Colonel64500:37:04.039 --> 00:37:05.800
Blake and we'll get you safely out of the country.64600:37:06.039 --> 00:37:08.719
Hold on, hold on, I got a better idea. I'll64700:37:08.719 --> 00:37:10.679
go with you to Colonel Blake and we'll give it64800:37:10.679 --> 00:37:11.320
to him together.64900:37:11.639 --> 00:37:14.360
No, that would be too dangerous to whom Will you65000:37:14.400 --> 00:37:15.559
please trust me?65100:37:15.719 --> 00:37:16.599
Give me a reason?65200:37:17.400 --> 00:37:17.880
Please?65300:37:18.039 --> 00:37:18.960
Where's the paper?65400:37:19.079 --> 00:37:22.239
I I burned it.65500:37:24.719 --> 00:37:26.440
Do you expect me to believe that?65600:37:26.559 --> 00:37:29.840
Why not? You expect me to believe everything you tell me.65700:37:30.559 --> 00:37:33.920
You admit you had the paper, and somehow between the65800:37:33.960 --> 00:37:36.559
time you ran from the NEMAGU you managed to hide65900:37:36.559 --> 00:37:38.639
it in a place where experts have been unable to66000:37:38.639 --> 00:37:38.960
find it.66100:37:39.000 --> 00:37:40.519
I told you I burned it, and.66200:37:40.639 --> 00:37:43.320
You know that's a fairy tale that no one will disease.66300:37:43.360 --> 00:37:44.960
I don't care whether you believe it or not. Now66400:37:44.960 --> 00:37:47.840
you're coming with me where to talk to your Colonel Blake.66500:37:48.159 --> 00:37:51.320
He won't see you, Oh, I think he will. Goodbye, Carol,66600:37:51.320 --> 00:37:52.239
it was nice knowing it.66700:37:52.360 --> 00:37:55.039
I think you will kindly step back into your room66800:37:55.039 --> 00:37:55.639
as your feeling.66900:37:55.719 --> 00:38:01.079
Now wait a minute, it introduced myself. I am Major67000:38:01.119 --> 00:38:05.400
Simonovich Chalm of the Gay Pay you or the NKVD.67100:38:05.079 --> 00:38:08.639
Does not really matter. What matters is that you and67200:38:08.719 --> 00:38:10.639
I have something to discuss.67300:38:10.800 --> 00:38:11.519
I warn you.67400:38:11.679 --> 00:38:14.400
Yeah, sure you did, just like a rattlesnake does.67500:38:14.280 --> 00:38:17.800
I do so dislike dealing with amateurs. This is strictly67600:38:17.840 --> 00:38:18.360
a business.67700:38:18.760 --> 00:38:20.239
You mean you want to make a deal with me?67800:38:20.519 --> 00:38:23.840
Correction, I mean you would find it wise if you67900:38:23.920 --> 00:38:26.440
wanted to make a deal with us for the paper?68000:38:26.639 --> 00:38:28.719
Exactly where is it?68100:38:28.760 --> 00:38:28.800
Not?68200:38:28.960 --> 00:38:32.199
Not so fast? Not so fast? You spoke about a deal.68300:38:32.880 --> 00:38:35.920
You give us the paper, We give you your life.68400:38:37.159 --> 00:38:43.199
You must really believe I'm an idiot. You people murdered Wilson.68500:38:43.320 --> 00:38:46.440
That paper is the only thing that's keeping me alive.68600:38:46.639 --> 00:38:47.760
My word, no deal.68700:38:48.199 --> 00:38:52.679
You really believe you have a choice, Carol Ol Rajansky,68800:38:53.239 --> 00:38:54.760
make the usual arrangements.68900:38:55.519 --> 00:38:56.280
We will wait here.69000:38:58.079 --> 00:38:58.360
The name.69100:38:58.440 --> 00:39:02.639
Look at that Seasi sister Mirs.69200:39:02.599 --> 00:39:08.480
Karol, Yes, tell me something well, I like Rozanski.69300:39:15.519 --> 00:39:19.639
By this time, Larry Fielding realizes that he's been used.69400:39:20.440 --> 00:39:22.840
That he was never supposed to bring Dave Wilson of69500:39:22.880 --> 00:39:26.039
paper telling the location of the lance Are Jewel collection,69600:39:27.039 --> 00:39:30.719
But his discoveries have only added to his dilemma. He69700:39:30.840 --> 00:39:33.920
was quick witted enough to realize that his only hope69800:39:34.239 --> 00:39:37.280
was to hide the paper because that slip of paper69900:39:37.840 --> 00:39:42.119
is his last resort. We'll be back shortly with Act three,70000:39:42.239 --> 00:39:45.559
Breaks and Wars and jes Jealous and.70100:39:47.719 --> 00:39:52.360
You up. This is Jerry Kaufer for Kellogg's Special K.70200:39:52.920 --> 00:39:55.039
We've been having some fun in our television and radio70300:39:55.039 --> 00:39:57.519
commercials by using a ball and chain to symbolize the70400:39:57.559 --> 00:40:00.199
slight overweight problem common to so many of us. We70500:40:00.239 --> 00:40:02.400
point out that being a few pounds overweight is just70600:40:02.480 --> 00:40:05.920
a little more difficult for you climbing stairs, just walking around,70700:40:06.159 --> 00:40:08.880
even sitting down can feel well like you're wearing a70800:40:08.880 --> 00:40:09.559
ball and chain.70900:40:10.039 --> 00:40:11.440
In case you miss the message, it's this.71000:40:11.880 --> 00:40:13.599
If you really want to get rid of that extra weight,71100:40:13.679 --> 00:40:16.280
you really have to work at it by exercising and71200:40:16.400 --> 00:40:19.599
with sensible meals like the Special K breakfast. A one71300:40:19.599 --> 00:40:22.719
ounce bowl of Special K, America's favorite high protein cereal,71400:40:22.960 --> 00:40:25.800
four ounces of skin milk, tomato, juice, and coffee, less71500:40:25.800 --> 00:40:29.440
than two hundred forty calories, nutritious and by the way, delicious.71600:40:29.679 --> 00:40:31.639
So why not begin each day with a Special K71700:40:31.800 --> 00:40:34.639
breakfast and then keep up the good work. Special K71800:40:34.760 --> 00:40:37.039
can't hope you lose weight all by itself, but it71900:40:37.119 --> 00:40:38.280
really is a good start.72000:40:39.880 --> 00:40:41.400
Hi I'm hal Lindon.72100:40:42.079 --> 00:40:45.280
There's a lot of talk these days about America's energy crisis,72200:40:45.679 --> 00:40:48.679
talk about doing without heat, about doing without our cars,72300:40:49.079 --> 00:40:52.239
about what's going to happen if we run out of fuel. Well,72400:40:52.239 --> 00:40:54.639
we may not have to run out of fuel if72500:40:54.679 --> 00:40:57.280
we all work together to conserve the fuel we have.72600:40:58.119 --> 00:41:01.039
That means turning your thermostats down to sixty eight degrees72700:41:01.119 --> 00:41:03.119
during the day and turning them down.72800:41:02.920 --> 00:41:03.880
To sixty at night.72900:41:04.480 --> 00:41:07.760
It means turning off lights, TV sets and electrical appliance73000:41:07.840 --> 00:41:10.599
is the minute we're finished with them. It means driving73100:41:10.639 --> 00:41:15.360
no faster than fifty starting or joining carpools, avoiding the73200:41:15.480 --> 00:41:17.039
kind of stop and go motoring that.73300:41:17.039 --> 00:41:18.559
Eats up gas by the gallon.73400:41:19.119 --> 00:41:22.320
In short, it means saving every ounce of energy we73500:41:22.440 --> 00:41:26.960
can every chance we get. So please do your part73600:41:27.000 --> 00:41:30.239
to make the fuel supply stretch a little further for73700:41:30.320 --> 00:41:35.480
your own sake. Don't be selfish, don't be foolish, don't73800:41:35.519 --> 00:41:36.320
be fulish.73900:41:36.840 --> 00:41:40.440
This message from the Federal Energy Office on the Advertising counsil.74000:41:52.320 --> 00:41:56.679
Newspaper man Larry Fielding sits waiting in his Paris hotel room,74100:41:57.559 --> 00:42:00.880
closely guarded by three members of the Russian Secret Police74200:42:01.559 --> 00:42:06.079
and the beautiful American girl Carol Johnson. They are waiting74300:42:06.079 --> 00:42:10.039
for a man named Rozanski, who might very well be74400:42:10.559 --> 00:42:13.519
for all Fielding knows his executioner.74500:42:13.800 --> 00:42:17.159
You know we mean to obtain the paper. Rodzansky is74600:42:17.199 --> 00:42:20.639
a doctor and a chemist. He'll be here shortly. You74700:42:20.679 --> 00:42:23.880
will be put to sleep painlessly. You'll be taken from74800:42:23.960 --> 00:42:27.039
here in an ambulance to a safe place, and there74900:42:27.079 --> 00:42:29.239
you will be injected with sodium pentophile.75000:42:29.360 --> 00:42:31.039
Fielding. You will tell us.75100:42:31.800 --> 00:42:34.760
I don't suppose you'll tell me what's so important about75200:42:34.800 --> 00:42:35.679
this piece of paper.75300:42:36.320 --> 00:42:40.119
You have heard of the SAM six missiles, the surface75400:42:40.159 --> 00:42:43.119
to air weapons with deadly accuracy that we have developed75500:42:43.159 --> 00:42:45.800
and which will use so successfully in minor wars in75600:42:45.840 --> 00:42:46.800
Asia and the Middle East.75700:42:46.880 --> 00:42:48.719
Yes, yes, I've heard of them. Good.75800:42:49.440 --> 00:42:53.159
We learned that someone whose identity we still seek has75900:42:53.159 --> 00:42:56.840
invented a jamming device which would render the same six76000:42:56.920 --> 00:42:58.280
almost worthless.76100:42:58.440 --> 00:42:59.079
Ah.76200:42:59.239 --> 00:43:03.079
We don't believe in system can be invented, but we76300:43:03.280 --> 00:43:04.599
do not take chances.76400:43:05.679 --> 00:43:07.159
We have reason to believe that the piece of.76500:43:07.119 --> 00:43:10.639
Paper that you carried away from Professor Tiels has the76600:43:10.679 --> 00:43:15.559
information for building such a device that will be Rojansky.76700:43:16.159 --> 00:43:17.360
Carol admit him.76800:43:17.440 --> 00:43:24.400
Of course, come in, doctor, this is the patient.76900:43:24.440 --> 00:43:27.000
Now look, I really don't think this is a necessary movie.77000:43:27.079 --> 00:43:29.519
Easier if you don't force young man. I don't intend77100:43:29.559 --> 00:43:37.559
to make his arm hold it still. You put a stretcher,77200:43:37.679 --> 00:43:42.199
of course, he'll be on there in a moment, so77300:43:42.480 --> 00:43:52.280
we can leave. What is this, younger, It has nothing77400:43:52.320 --> 00:43:52.840
to do with us.77500:43:53.039 --> 00:43:54.719
We are taking a sick man to the hospital.77600:43:54.960 --> 00:43:57.119
Put this stretcher into the ambuetsy quickly.77700:43:58.320 --> 00:44:01.320
I was apologized, but he received a report from the77800:44:01.360 --> 00:44:05.159
hotel concierge that there was a dead man here, absurd.77900:44:05.239 --> 00:44:09.559
Inspector. This is doctor Jansky. The doctor will explain this78000:44:09.679 --> 00:44:10.519
to you, Inspector.78100:44:10.639 --> 00:44:12.840
This man became suddenly quite ill.78200:44:13.119 --> 00:44:15.559
I gave him a sedative to quiet him, and we're78300:44:15.599 --> 00:44:18.719
not taking him to the lay favored nursing home. As78400:44:18.760 --> 00:44:21.119
you can see by the ambulance, you'll say, he is78500:44:21.159 --> 00:44:26.280
alive very much. So see for yourself, Dieu, I know78600:44:26.400 --> 00:44:30.159
this man, Inspector. He must receive medical attention.78700:44:29.920 --> 00:44:33.079
Of course, of course, not assaysies not.78800:44:33.159 --> 00:44:34.920
Instead of taking him to the nursing home, he go78900:44:35.000 --> 00:44:36.320
instead to the police hospital.79000:44:36.360 --> 00:44:39.719
And that's ridiculous, is might pace. I'm afraid. I must insist.79100:44:40.519 --> 00:44:43.280
This young man has most recently been released from jail79200:44:43.880 --> 00:44:46.000
where we were holding him on a charge of murder.79300:44:46.039 --> 00:44:49.840
If he's been released the release, yes, but he has79400:44:49.920 --> 00:44:54.480
not been completely clear, Sol began.79500:44:55.360 --> 00:45:05.360
Take this man to the police hospital. Did you get79600:45:05.400 --> 00:45:05.880
a report?79700:45:06.400 --> 00:45:06.840
Yes?79800:45:07.239 --> 00:45:09.239
And he'll be conscious in an hour.79900:45:09.079 --> 00:45:10.760
And he will talk, and I'm sure of that.80000:45:10.920 --> 00:45:13.440
He will scream to see Quonnel Blake, and then your80100:45:13.480 --> 00:45:14.840
cover is blown and the.80200:45:14.840 --> 00:45:16.000
Whole operation goes fully.80300:45:16.360 --> 00:45:19.480
What do we do silence him? But what about the papers?80400:45:19.880 --> 00:45:22.639
We will be faltered for that, of course. But if80500:45:22.639 --> 00:45:26.159
we do not have it, neither do the Americans.80600:45:26.639 --> 00:45:27.440
Who do we have in the.80700:45:27.360 --> 00:45:31.199
Police hospital only le Claire. We cling, But he can80800:45:31.280 --> 00:45:32.159
admit Rashansky.80900:45:32.360 --> 00:45:34.639
Rashansky is a doctor. He doesn't need the clerk to81000:45:34.679 --> 00:45:36.920
admit him. He can visit his patient openly.81100:45:37.079 --> 00:45:39.559
Thank you, my dear. I visit Fielding and he dies81200:45:39.679 --> 00:45:42.599
shortly thereafter. That idea does not appeal to me.81300:45:42.760 --> 00:45:43.840
We have to do something.81400:45:44.039 --> 00:45:48.119
You're both right, Carol, you will be his first visitor81500:45:48.159 --> 00:45:53.039
when he regains consciousness. No, yes, Carol Radunsky, give or81600:45:53.039 --> 00:45:54.000
your hypodermic kit.81700:45:54.159 --> 00:45:55.840
I don't have to do this and I won't.81800:45:55.960 --> 00:45:57.239
You would prefer that.81900:45:57.360 --> 00:46:01.239
In my report I mention your failure with feeling when82000:46:01.239 --> 00:46:06.800
you had some hours alone with him. I'll go that82100:46:06.920 --> 00:46:12.039
is wise, Razansky, give it the syringe here quickly. Carus82200:46:12.079 --> 00:46:17.039
waiting and Carol, if you should decide or even think82300:46:17.440 --> 00:46:23.079
about changing sides, it would be most unwise. You know,82400:46:23.199 --> 00:46:26.239
the French police are still most interested in the person82500:46:26.280 --> 00:46:27.440
who murdered Wilson.82600:46:35.519 --> 00:46:42.880
You awake now, Larry, I, oh, no.82700:46:42.519 --> 00:46:47.440
Wake up and listen to me. Larry, You've got to listen.82800:46:48.320 --> 00:46:52.880
Try to understand, well, well, what kind of a prices this?82900:46:53.239 --> 00:46:55.440
You're safe, it's a police hospital.83000:46:55.679 --> 00:46:59.480
But how'd you get in here? Where's uh? What's Rozanski?83100:46:59.679 --> 00:46:59.920
Look?83200:47:00.199 --> 00:47:02.760
I can understand how you feel and why you don't83300:47:02.760 --> 00:47:04.559
trust me. But the truth.83400:47:04.719 --> 00:47:06.960
Really is that I am a double agent.83500:47:07.360 --> 00:47:07.559
Ah.83600:47:08.360 --> 00:47:10.400
Do you understand what a double agent is?83700:47:10.559 --> 00:47:13.480
As near as I can figure out, a double as83800:47:13.559 --> 00:47:17.440
is somebody working for two different sides, Yes, and neither83900:47:17.519 --> 00:47:18.440
side trusts them.84000:47:18.559 --> 00:47:21.559
Oh you know that fits you to a t. You84100:47:21.679 --> 00:47:23.079
might just be telling the truth.84200:47:23.280 --> 00:47:24.239
I am.84300:47:24.559 --> 00:47:27.239
I really work for Colonel Blake, as I told you.84400:47:27.760 --> 00:47:31.719
The Russians know it. They think I've infiltrated the US84500:47:31.840 --> 00:47:33.079
military intelligence.84600:47:33.360 --> 00:47:36.920
But yes, yes, I know, you've really done just the opposite,84700:47:37.159 --> 00:47:40.880
worked your way into the Russian apparatus exactly.84800:47:42.400 --> 00:47:45.360
Oh, Larry, how can I make you believe me? You84900:47:46.360 --> 00:47:50.519
can't listen. You were deliberately recruited.85000:47:51.119 --> 00:47:53.639
The reason you lost your job was because we got85100:47:53.679 --> 00:47:54.679
in touch with your boss.85200:47:54.920 --> 00:47:58.079
He agreed to go along. The men who jumped you85300:47:58.159 --> 00:48:00.760
were part of the setup so that Wilson could save you.85400:48:00.679 --> 00:48:03.280
You know, wait a minute, wait a minute, but that85500:48:03.440 --> 00:48:06.320
doesn't prove a thing. You could have learned all that85600:48:06.480 --> 00:48:08.760
working for Blake and still be with the other side.85700:48:08.800 --> 00:48:13.400
And oh, speaking of Wilson, how about getting him killed?85800:48:13.559 --> 00:48:17.000
I tried to warn him, but there wasn't enough time.85900:48:18.159 --> 00:48:20.679
It would either go along with that or blow my86000:48:20.800 --> 00:48:22.679
cover and endanger the whole operation.86100:48:23.199 --> 00:48:25.079
And when I wanted to give the plans to Blake,86200:48:25.639 --> 00:48:27.480
you objected the same problem.86300:48:27.519 --> 00:48:29.760
If I went with you to Blake or you went86400:48:29.800 --> 00:48:31.440
to him after we had talked.86500:48:31.280 --> 00:48:32.239
My cover was blown.86600:48:33.199 --> 00:48:35.760
Now and suppose I had given you the plans, how86700:48:35.800 --> 00:48:37.400
would that have changed the situation.86800:48:38.000 --> 00:48:40.159
We would have had a phony copy that I would86900:48:40.159 --> 00:48:43.199
have delivered to Igor, and everything would have been fine,87000:48:43.800 --> 00:48:46.559
and there's still time for me to do that. If87100:48:46.559 --> 00:48:49.280
you will just believe me and tell me where the87200:48:49.360 --> 00:48:50.079
plans are.87300:48:52.519 --> 00:48:56.679
I'd like to believe you. I really, I really would.87400:48:57.159 --> 00:49:04.280
Please? Where are they there? Get it's too dangerous? Look87500:49:04.440 --> 00:49:04.960
you see this?87600:49:05.719 --> 00:49:06.800
Yeah, it's a hypodermic.87700:49:07.039 --> 00:49:11.599
It's death. Igor sent me here with this to kill you.87800:49:13.920 --> 00:49:15.360
Now do you believe me?87900:49:15.679 --> 00:49:16.679
Wait? Wait a minute.88000:49:17.239 --> 00:49:19.440
If you don't kill me, and I guess you don't88100:49:19.480 --> 00:49:21.920
intend to, what will Ego and his friends think?88200:49:22.000 --> 00:49:22.880
Isn't your cover blown?88300:49:22.880 --> 00:49:23.000
Then?88400:49:23.039 --> 00:49:24.320
Anyway? Could be.88500:49:24.440 --> 00:49:27.079
But if I come back with the plans and say88600:49:27.119 --> 00:49:29.280
that I got them out of you without having to88700:49:29.360 --> 00:49:31.199
kill you, there's a chance they'll believe me.88800:49:32.400 --> 00:49:39.920
Ah well, I'm thinking, who are you?88900:49:41.519 --> 00:49:42.519
One of the hospital gods?89000:49:42.559 --> 00:49:46.119
Monsieur and Mossire? You have been here sometime? How is89100:49:46.159 --> 00:49:47.480
the patient guard?89200:49:47.840 --> 00:49:51.400
Yes, Monsieur, call Colonel Blake at US Military Intelligence. Tell89300:49:51.440 --> 00:49:53.360
him I've got to see him right away on a89400:49:53.400 --> 00:49:58.599
matter of the utmost urgency, Blake, Colonel Blake, I would89500:49:58.679 --> 00:50:02.559
inform my superior. Now you don't have to inform anyone.89600:50:02.760 --> 00:50:03.519
Just call him.89700:50:04.000 --> 00:50:07.920
Yes, Monsieur, Major would be disappointed you have not followed89800:50:07.920 --> 00:50:08.239
in stock.89900:50:09.840 --> 00:50:11.840
I would have had the information if you hadn't commit90000:50:11.920 --> 00:50:12.400
when you did.90100:50:12.760 --> 00:50:14.440
I know what you were ordered to do.90200:50:14.480 --> 00:50:15.159
What?90300:50:15.159 --> 00:50:15.599
What's this?90400:50:15.960 --> 00:50:16.920
A moment of truth?90500:50:17.000 --> 00:50:17.800
I'm afraid, Larry.90600:50:17.880 --> 00:50:19.679
Oh, I know how highly the Major regard you, madam,90700:50:20.480 --> 00:50:21.800
and I also know what he thinks of me.90800:50:22.599 --> 00:50:23.960
Tonight will change that?90900:50:24.559 --> 00:50:25.039
Give me that.91000:50:25.079 --> 00:50:36.760
Sing here writing you would, Carol you you were telling91100:50:36.800 --> 00:50:37.360
me the truth?91200:50:37.920 --> 00:50:46.119
Yes, yes I was, and I had to kill him91300:50:46.159 --> 00:50:51.039
to make you see it. Where is the paper? Please?91400:50:53.079 --> 00:50:55.719
In my hotel room?91500:50:54.920 --> 00:50:58.760
Aren't you ever going to stop playing games?91600:50:58.800 --> 00:51:00.199
You know your room was, sir.91700:51:00.400 --> 00:51:02.320
Let me get dressed and i'll show you.91800:51:11.480 --> 00:51:13.960
If it's not here, there's going to be the devil depate.91900:51:14.000 --> 00:51:14.440
Don't worry.92000:51:14.440 --> 00:51:17.440
It's here now I'm the one who has to be shown.92100:51:18.280 --> 00:51:22.039
Trained operatives from two special branches went over this room92200:51:22.119 --> 00:51:24.000
with everything except Geiger counts.92300:51:24.079 --> 00:51:26.639
Okay, okay, where are we going?92400:51:26.760 --> 00:51:31.000
The bathroom that was searched too, Oh, I don't doubt it.92500:51:32.320 --> 00:51:32.480
Oh.92600:51:32.519 --> 00:51:33.880
We went through that cabinet.92700:51:35.119 --> 00:51:36.440
What do you see?92800:51:37.159 --> 00:51:40.639
Towels, paper tissues, some of your toilet articles. We took92900:51:40.639 --> 00:51:41.760
your razor of putts.93000:51:41.519 --> 00:51:42.920
Uh huh huh, and what else?93100:51:45.079 --> 00:51:48.960
A roll of toilet tissue unopened.93200:51:48.320 --> 00:51:51.039
And as the friends say, mademoiselle, voila.93300:51:51.760 --> 00:51:55.039
Oh and now we unrolled this toilet tissue and keep93400:51:55.119 --> 00:51:55.559
on road.93500:51:56.440 --> 00:52:00.840
And oh my god, where did you learn to open93600:52:00.880 --> 00:52:02.880
a package and reseal it like that?93700:52:04.239 --> 00:52:06.679
When I was a kid, I was the best clerk93800:52:06.719 --> 00:52:08.280
in Roscoe's shipping department.93900:52:08.519 --> 00:52:08.679
Oh?94000:52:10.320 --> 00:52:17.639
Thanks, it was nice knowing you. I really mean that.94100:52:17.800 --> 00:52:20.800
Larry, Hey, wait a minute, Wait a minute. Surely I've94200:52:20.840 --> 00:52:22.079
earned the right to buy your dinner.94300:52:22.559 --> 00:52:23.159
I'd like to.94400:52:23.280 --> 00:52:27.280
Well, you'd better I'll start doing some talking black man.94500:52:28.360 --> 00:52:36.039
You said it, all right, I'll meet you at Lydma94600:52:36.159 --> 00:52:37.199
Goo at ten thirty.94700:52:37.239 --> 00:52:39.960
No way, let's try the right bank, Lauro Tonde.94800:52:40.440 --> 00:52:41.039
That's a date.94900:52:42.199 --> 00:52:42.760
I'll see you.95000:52:43.480 --> 00:52:54.199
Better be there, shirts ties. Yes, I think that's everything. Come,95100:52:56.159 --> 00:53:00.360
Oh it's Zuro Juonski. Are you coming with me? Staying95200:53:00.880 --> 00:53:02.199
and we shall say goodbye.95300:53:02.480 --> 00:53:04.320
I do not have much time. The plane from Moscow95400:53:04.440 --> 00:53:06.840
leaves it. I do not think you'll be taking the plane.95500:53:06.960 --> 00:53:07.719
Are you insane?95600:53:08.519 --> 00:53:12.159
You know I've been recalled not precisely what you mean,95700:53:12.480 --> 00:53:17.480
not precisely. Moscow feels you have bungled badly. So it's95800:53:17.639 --> 00:53:20.559
not the first time that an operation is bursed. You95900:53:20.679 --> 00:53:22.239
were duped by the American girl.96000:53:23.360 --> 00:53:25.880
You know she was a double ed. I know now,96100:53:27.039 --> 00:53:29.480
did you know before she killed the Claire? I was96200:53:29.519 --> 00:53:33.400
not in charge at that time. At that time, Now96300:53:33.519 --> 00:53:36.199
there are two murders that cannot be hushed up. The96400:53:36.320 --> 00:53:39.639
French police must have a murderer to satisfy.96500:53:39.239 --> 00:53:41.920
The public, then give them carrors. She I only wish96600:53:42.000 --> 00:53:45.679
that we could. They want you. You have been chosen96700:53:45.760 --> 00:53:49.400
to be the murderer. I am replacing you as the96800:53:49.480 --> 00:53:52.639
head of the section. Ridiculous. I won't remain quiet.96900:53:53.360 --> 00:53:54.800
I have a lot I could and will say to97000:53:54.840 --> 00:53:56.719
the authorities if Moscow abandons me?97100:53:57.280 --> 00:53:59.880
Have you listened to her astray? You're no time to listen.97200:54:00.400 --> 00:54:03.000
We hypodermic, don't.97300:54:05.599 --> 00:54:05.800
You go.97400:54:06.119 --> 00:54:08.760
You should be pleased to know that you're dying. You'll97500:54:08.880 --> 00:54:10.159
serve a good course.97600:54:19.320 --> 00:54:22.000
I'm sorry, I'm late for that spot. There were loose97700:54:22.039 --> 00:54:23.480
heads that had to be clear that well.97800:54:23.519 --> 00:54:27.400
I thought maybe you decided against coming, after all, your97900:54:27.519 --> 00:54:28.480
job here is finished.98000:54:28.800 --> 00:54:32.519
Well, yes, now that the Russians know you, there's nothing98100:54:32.559 --> 00:54:35.199
for you to do. It would be suicide to try to.98200:54:35.559 --> 00:54:38.280
Oh, there are other things for me, sure.98300:54:38.639 --> 00:54:41.719
Like getting married to a love sick newspaper man, settling down,98400:54:41.840 --> 00:54:42.559
raising the family.98500:54:43.679 --> 00:54:47.079
Oh oh, I.98600:54:49.199 --> 00:54:52.000
I take it on your first month of hurry, first98700:54:52.039 --> 00:54:56.800
and only, well, Larry, were very different from other women.98800:54:57.719 --> 00:55:01.480
You know, our business, you pay dues and they're heavy payments.98900:55:02.960 --> 00:55:03.519
I don't get it.99000:55:04.039 --> 00:55:06.880
I'm talking about sitting at another cafe on the Left Bank,99100:55:08.159 --> 00:55:11.039
sitting and knowing that an agent named Wilson was going99200:55:11.119 --> 00:55:15.519
to be killed, clumsily trying to warn him, and finally99300:55:16.639 --> 00:55:17.800
deciding that.99400:55:17.920 --> 00:55:21.679
His death was the way it had to be. Larry,99500:55:21.760 --> 00:55:22.639
that's a big payment.99600:55:23.159 --> 00:55:25.239
You can forget about it now. It wasn't your fault.99700:55:25.360 --> 00:55:30.800
No, forget about that, and forget about Leclaire. You see,99800:55:32.199 --> 00:55:33.159
it's even hard.99900:55:33.039 --> 00:55:36.760
For you to say I had to kill it.100000:55:39.440 --> 00:55:42.480
No, Larry, I have to keep on to justify those things.100100:55:43.360 --> 00:55:46.400
By Larry, thanks for the champagne.100200:55:45.960 --> 00:55:48.159
But our dinner. I've ordered dinner. At least have dinner100300:55:48.199 --> 00:55:48.400
with me.100400:55:48.880 --> 00:55:53.119
We'd both know what I have to do. If I100500:55:53.199 --> 00:55:57.519
ever changed my mind, I promise I'll come running.100600:56:03.280 --> 00:56:07.840
Larry Fielding sat in La Rotonde and watched her walk away.100700:56:09.440 --> 00:56:11.840
He knew she was walking out of his life.100800:56:12.760 --> 00:56:15.639
For a moment, he toyed with the idea of running100900:56:15.719 --> 00:56:20.519
after her and joining her world of spies. He flirted101000:56:20.599 --> 00:56:23.599
with the idea that he might even be some sort101100:56:23.639 --> 00:56:28.719
of an American James Bond. But then the waiter brought101200:56:28.760 --> 00:56:33.639
the dinner, and to his surprise, he was hungry, and101300:56:33.800 --> 00:56:37.599
that realization made him wonder about whether or not he101400:56:37.800 --> 00:56:38.719
was truly in love.101500:56:39.840 --> 00:56:43.599
I'll be back shortly. Who knows how to help you101600:56:43.760 --> 00:56:50.000
solve your shopping problems? You're better business girl knows.101700:56:50.960 --> 00:56:54.239
I saw this perfectly darling mirror in the showroom, so101800:56:54.360 --> 00:56:57.159
I bought it. But when the truck came, they delivered101900:56:57.199 --> 00:57:00.840
this thing I never saw before. Now what am I102000:57:00.960 --> 00:57:01.519
going to do?102100:57:05.039 --> 00:57:06.840
I'll tell you what to do, madam.102200:57:07.719 --> 00:57:08.159
Who are you?102300:57:09.000 --> 00:57:11.960
I'm the man from the Better Business Bureau. Now the102400:57:12.039 --> 00:57:14.320
first thing to do is to call the store manager102500:57:14.400 --> 00:57:17.400
and tell him what happened. But in the future, when102600:57:17.440 --> 00:57:20.960
your merchandise is delivered, you should examine the item before102700:57:21.119 --> 00:57:24.280
the delivery truck leaves, and if it's to be delivered102800:57:24.320 --> 00:57:27.639
from a warehouse, have a clear understanding with the dealer102900:57:27.800 --> 00:57:30.239
that unless it is the same as the sample was103000:57:30.320 --> 00:57:31.480
shown to you, you.103100:57:31.559 --> 00:57:35.360
Will not accept it or pay for it? Oh, thank you.103200:57:36.679 --> 00:57:39.639
Just part of my job, madam, to help people with103300:57:39.760 --> 00:57:41.320
their shopping problems.103400:57:53.599 --> 00:57:56.920
Back in New York, Larry Fielding returned to his old103500:57:57.039 --> 00:58:01.280
job an old friend and boss, Horace Finley, who was103600:58:01.440 --> 00:58:05.719
curious about what had happened in Paris. Finley kept pressing103700:58:05.800 --> 00:58:11.800
Larry to tell him about his Parisian adventure. Finally, Larry said, I'll.103800:58:11.639 --> 00:58:16.400
Tell you, Horace. In Paris, the food was good.103900:58:17.880 --> 00:58:22.280
Our cast included William Redfield, Joan Loring, Roger to coven,104000:58:22.559 --> 00:58:27.119
Ian Martin, and Chris Gambell. The entire production was under104100:58:27.159 --> 00:58:31.159
the direction of Hyman Brown. Radio Mystery Theater was sponsored104200:58:31.199 --> 00:58:33.800
in part by New Sugar Free Diet seven Up.104300:58:34.440 --> 00:58:34.960
This is E. G.104400:58:35.199 --> 00:58:38.360
Marshall inviting you to return to our Radio Mystery Theater104500:58:38.880 --> 00:58:41.199
for another adventure in the macabre.104600:58:42.679 --> 00:59:07.880
Until next time, Pleasant Dreams. W DAF Kansas City.104700:59:18.360 --> 00:59:27.079
My dear, do you find yourself at ease or at odds?104800:59:28.840 --> 00:59:37.079
That is the question, isn't it. I suppose it's not104900:59:37.199 --> 00:59:43.800
always the easiest to figure out. After all, oneself is complicated.105000:59:45.679 --> 00:59:50.880
Or perhaps we are simple, simpler than we could ever imagine,105100:59:52.119 --> 00:59:55.159
and the rest is just destiny.105200:59:56.239 --> 00:59:58.760
Have you heard the strange tales of the Whistler.105301:00:15.440 --> 01:00:16.679
I'm the whistler.105401:00:21.079 --> 01:00:23.840
I have as much freedom as a squirrel in a cage.105501:00:24.440 --> 01:00:28.199
Marthia is a cold mercenary devil. But I'll have freedom105601:00:28.679 --> 01:00:30.880
beginning tonight. I'll kill her.105701:00:34.639 --> 01:00:37.760
Friday night and again. CBS presents the Whistler.105801:00:44.599 --> 01:00:48.480
I the whistler, know many things, or I walk by night.105901:00:49.480 --> 01:00:52.800
I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the106001:00:52.880 --> 01:00:55.760
hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows.106101:00:56.639 --> 01:01:01.039
And so I tell you tonight the amazing story of Destiny.106201:01:06.360 --> 01:01:08.519
At a long table in a New York office sits106301:01:08.559 --> 01:01:11.599
a little man. He is slightly bald and thin and106401:01:11.760 --> 01:01:16.119
forty five, A mild manner, reticent little fellow named Milton Strong.106501:01:16.920 --> 01:01:20.360
But Milton is anything but strong. For the past twenty106601:01:20.440 --> 01:01:22.400
five years he has worked in the office, and now106701:01:22.440 --> 01:01:25.559
as a bookkeeper, is earning the stupendous.106801:01:24.960 --> 01:01:26.599
Salary of thirty five dollars a week.106901:01:27.400 --> 01:01:31.400
Milton can't understand why no one appreciates his ability. Milton107001:01:31.440 --> 01:01:33.079
has grown a bit sour, but he's never had the107101:01:33.159 --> 01:01:36.039
nerve to ask for a raise. Today, however, is going107201:01:36.119 --> 01:01:38.559
to be different. His wife has started him out with107301:01:38.599 --> 01:01:41.079
a lecture, and Milton is going to face the boss107401:01:41.119 --> 01:01:43.199
in a manner both clear and strong.107501:01:44.360 --> 01:01:48.719
Mister gulfwrit I'd like to have a word behaving, mister Goulfwright.107601:01:48.880 --> 01:01:50.920
It has long been my decision to approach you on107701:01:51.000 --> 01:01:54.039
this subject, but for various reasons, a sense of reticence107801:01:54.199 --> 01:01:55.599
has bade me be Simon.107901:01:55.760 --> 01:01:57.280
How long did it take you to memorize that?108001:01:57.400 --> 01:01:57.679
Milton?108101:01:57.800 --> 01:02:00.320
I am forty five years old. I work hard and108201:02:00.400 --> 01:02:01.679
long and faithfully for this company.108301:02:01.800 --> 01:02:03.199
That's right, Milton, I'm aware of that.108401:02:03.440 --> 01:02:05.079
You haven't missed a day and all that time.108501:02:05.440 --> 01:02:07.880
In fact, our efficiency expert is getting out of booklets108601:02:07.920 --> 01:02:09.480
and he's using you as a feature.108701:02:09.599 --> 01:02:11.320
I came to this firm as a land of twenty108801:02:11.599 --> 01:02:14.079
and in all the following twenty five years I asked108901:02:14.079 --> 01:02:14.719
for very little.109001:02:14.960 --> 01:02:17.079
I did my work well, Sure you did, Milton, and109101:02:17.199 --> 01:02:18.280
the company appreciates it.109201:02:18.440 --> 01:02:20.960
I now draw a salary of thirty five dollars a week.109301:02:21.119 --> 01:02:23.480
And I thought that if after all this time, twenty109401:02:23.519 --> 01:02:25.679
five years, you could see your way clear to afford109501:02:25.760 --> 01:02:29.760
the go on, Milton, that to afford very well. I'm109601:02:29.800 --> 01:02:30.760
not getting any younger.109701:02:30.960 --> 01:02:33.599
Well, Milton's strange as it seems. I've just come from109801:02:33.599 --> 01:02:35.920
a meeting of the department heads. Mister Hunger is ahead109901:02:35.920 --> 01:02:37.039
of the accounting department, and.110001:02:37.639 --> 01:02:39.880
I'll let me see you. Oh, yes, here it is.110101:02:40.519 --> 01:02:41.239
Yes, here's his.110201:02:41.320 --> 01:02:42.960
Recommendation regarding you, Milton.110301:02:43.079 --> 01:02:44.440
Oh yes, yes, mister goofright.110401:02:44.599 --> 01:02:47.000
He recommends that you'll be retired of half salary as110501:02:47.119 --> 01:02:49.280
of the first of the month, in consideration of your110601:02:49.320 --> 01:02:51.159
long service and loyalty to the company.110701:02:52.320 --> 01:02:53.239
Retire.110801:02:53.800 --> 01:02:57.320
Oh but that can be retiring, that's what it says here.110901:02:57.360 --> 01:02:59.400
And I don't understand. I'm only forty five. I know111001:02:59.519 --> 01:02:59.960
one is retire.111101:03:00.880 --> 01:03:02.400
Why you should be tickled to death?111201:03:02.559 --> 01:03:04.199
It's like a bench and I came here to ask111301:03:04.239 --> 01:03:06.440
for a raise, a raise?111401:03:06.760 --> 01:03:09.480
Well, how could that be possible when your department head111501:03:09.480 --> 01:03:12.519
suggests retirement? Oh I see why you should be tickled111601:03:12.519 --> 01:03:15.159
to death. I'd be And you get two weeks full111701:03:15.239 --> 01:03:18.000
salary and two weeks vacation besides that full pay.111801:03:18.400 --> 01:03:20.320
You know, Milton, I can't envy you.111901:03:22.159 --> 01:03:22.760
I'm fired.112001:03:23.480 --> 01:03:28.320
Why that's crazy. You've been honored. Eh, good night, mister,112101:03:28.400 --> 01:03:29.559
good good night, Milton.112201:03:29.800 --> 01:03:31.960
After saturity, you've got nothing to worry about.112301:03:32.199 --> 01:03:41.480
Nothing and so poor Melton strong walks out of the112401:03:41.519 --> 01:03:42.920
big office and starts home.112501:03:43.800 --> 01:03:47.239
All the way his feeling of apprehension increases. His wife112601:03:47.360 --> 01:03:50.480
Mark what will she say? It was his wife who112701:03:50.559 --> 01:03:53.519
stirred unt to the point of demanding a raise. Finally,112801:03:53.559 --> 01:03:56.079
Milton gets up nerve enough to go home home to112901:03:56.239 --> 01:03:58.000
certain death at the hands of Martha.113001:04:02.239 --> 01:04:03.360
Yeah, yes, it's me, Matha.113101:04:03.519 --> 01:04:04.679
Well, where I know that you're been?113201:04:05.199 --> 01:04:06.559
Can't you ever get it into your head? And when113301:04:06.599 --> 01:04:08.320
I say dinner'll be ready by six nine minutes.113401:04:08.559 --> 01:04:11.039
The things happen sometimes to the lay me Matha delay you.113501:04:12.000 --> 01:04:13.400
I like to know what could happen to make you113601:04:13.480 --> 01:04:13.760
this late?113701:04:13.800 --> 01:04:15.119
But see I took some time to talk.113801:04:15.239 --> 01:04:16.519
What do you mean my coming into this house and113901:04:16.559 --> 01:04:18.559
that mud on your shoes? Get outside and take those114001:04:18.639 --> 01:04:19.079
rubbers off.114101:04:19.360 --> 01:04:19.800
I forgot it.114201:04:19.880 --> 01:04:21.519
Yeah, you forget your head if it wasn't tied up.114301:04:21.679 --> 01:04:22.599
Yes, Motha, I'll take them all.114401:04:22.719 --> 01:04:24.239
What do you mean coming into the house smoking? That's114501:04:24.280 --> 01:04:26.199
drinking pipe? Get it outside you here.114601:04:26.159 --> 01:04:28.000
Yes, mother, But I started to tell you I'll go114701:04:28.119 --> 01:04:28.400
on out.114801:04:28.400 --> 01:04:30.000
If you insist on smoking, do it outside.114901:04:30.199 --> 01:04:31.639
Put it out, Matha, I'll put it.115001:04:31.679 --> 01:04:33.599
Out Denner's cold and you can eat it that way.115101:04:33.599 --> 01:04:34.599
Well, I couldn't help it.115201:04:34.679 --> 01:04:37.239
I went to talk to them, to gool right about115301:04:37.280 --> 01:04:37.639
the rais?115401:04:37.760 --> 01:04:38.639
Yeah, what happened?115501:04:39.480 --> 01:04:43.079
See, I'm a little along in years, along in years?115601:04:43.639 --> 01:04:44.320
Is that what he said?115701:04:44.320 --> 01:04:45.880
Well, he didn't say if the head of the department115801:04:45.920 --> 01:04:48.719
had made a recommendation. But what Well, now, don't get excited, Martha.115901:04:48.760 --> 01:04:50.360
I went in to ask for the raise, as you said,116001:04:50.400 --> 01:04:52.599
and well everything had been a rained Did you get116101:04:52.639 --> 01:04:52.960
the rais?116201:04:53.679 --> 01:04:53.719
No?116301:04:54.360 --> 01:04:57.119
I've been retired on half salary.116401:04:57.320 --> 01:04:59.880
Retired retired at your age?116501:05:00.000 --> 01:05:00.679
Are you crazy?116601:05:01.159 --> 01:05:01.960
Why did you accept?116701:05:02.039 --> 01:05:02.800
Why? Except?116801:05:02.880 --> 01:05:03.400
What could I do?116901:05:04.559 --> 01:05:06.719
So you went in to ask for a raise and117001:05:06.800 --> 01:05:08.559
you let them throw you out right into the edge.117101:05:08.559 --> 01:05:09.199
Oh what could I do?117201:05:09.320 --> 01:05:10.880
It was all arrange, hired at.117301:05:10.800 --> 01:05:13.599
Half salary seventeen sixty a week, and you stood there117401:05:13.639 --> 01:05:15.159
like a nip with and let them put that over it,117501:05:15.679 --> 01:05:17.039
You stupid, spiless jelly.117601:05:17.320 --> 01:05:18.960
Could I do you let them push you around for117701:05:19.039 --> 01:05:21.239
twenty five years? You could have been a goose rice117801:05:21.320 --> 01:05:23.320
job right now, but you are afraid to open up117901:05:23.320 --> 01:05:23.639
your mind.118001:05:23.679 --> 01:05:25.559
You went to his office to demand a raise, but118101:05:25.679 --> 01:05:26.840
he beat.118201:05:26.719 --> 01:05:27.039
Me to it.118301:05:27.119 --> 01:05:29.639
Now, that's always in the tuble, Milton Strong, somebody's always118401:05:29.679 --> 01:05:30.159
beat you to it.118501:05:30.440 --> 01:05:34.719
Spoke up first, retired seventeen fifty.118601:05:34.400 --> 01:05:37.079
A week, an old man, And how are you going118701:05:37.159 --> 01:05:38.639
to manage on seventeen sixty a week?118801:05:38.639 --> 01:05:40.519
Well, I suppose I can find something else.118901:05:40.599 --> 01:05:41.199
I'd like to know what.119001:05:41.480 --> 01:05:44.239
I'll find something, and until I do, well, your sister119101:05:44.400 --> 01:05:45.760
left you fifteen hundred dollars.119201:05:47.599 --> 01:05:50.480
What did you say? Nothing?119301:05:51.119 --> 01:05:54.039
That is, if you think I'm going to touch a119401:05:54.119 --> 01:05:56.079
dollar or that money while you're still able to stand119501:05:56.119 --> 01:05:58.559
on two feet, you're crazy. It's in the man and119601:05:58.599 --> 01:06:01.159
it'll stay there. And if you want to hope that119701:06:01.199 --> 01:06:02.119
filthy pipe, get.119801:06:02.079 --> 01:06:05.639
Outside, Yes, Mama, I'll go outside.119901:06:05.880 --> 01:06:07.679
Do you want anything to eat? It's on the kitchen table.120001:06:07.960 --> 01:06:11.559
I don't want anything what I'll leave it later after120101:06:11.559 --> 01:06:14.360
a while, Mother, I want to think things.120201:06:15.800 --> 01:06:19.079
Don't worry yourself out. I'm going to bed. Good night,120301:06:20.400 --> 01:06:21.320
I said, good night.120401:06:22.960 --> 01:06:23.760
Good night, Martha.120501:06:24.960 --> 01:06:35.480
Good Night's long past midnight, and Milton has been sitting120601:06:35.559 --> 01:06:38.920
by the window, staring into the night. Resentment has taken120701:06:38.960 --> 01:06:42.000
hold of him and slowly grown into hatred and revenge.120801:06:43.000 --> 01:06:44.920
Terrible thoughts surged through his brain.120901:06:45.760 --> 01:06:47.840
Why should I tolerate such persecution?121001:06:48.480 --> 01:06:50.719
Why should I stand idly by and be pushed.121101:06:50.440 --> 01:06:51.239
Around by everyone?121201:06:52.599 --> 01:06:54.800
Firm bulldos my mother?121301:06:55.480 --> 01:06:58.320
She's not a wife, She's a cool mercenary devil.121401:06:58.920 --> 01:06:59.400
Freedom.121501:07:00.079 --> 01:07:01.880
I have as much freedom as a squirrel and a121601:07:02.000 --> 01:07:04.760
key appreciation loyalty twenty.121701:07:04.519 --> 01:07:05.280
Five years of it.121801:07:06.039 --> 01:07:08.480
What do I get? But I have freedom.121901:07:08.599 --> 01:07:10.639
I will have it beginning tonight.122001:07:11.119 --> 01:07:11.880
I'll kill her.122101:07:12.639 --> 01:07:13.440
I'll go far away.122201:07:13.800 --> 01:07:15.360
No one will ever know what's come of it.122301:07:22.320 --> 01:07:25.440
Trembling in anticipation, Milton goes into the small kitchen, opens122401:07:25.480 --> 01:07:29.119
a drawer, and steps softly to Martha's room, opens her door,122501:07:29.159 --> 01:07:37.480
and stands listening to her easy breathing. Then Milton leaves122601:07:37.559 --> 01:07:40.960
the house and wanders about the streets till dawn. Then,122701:07:41.000 --> 01:07:43.000
at ten in the morning, he steps into the bank.122801:07:43.679 --> 01:07:44.880
Good morning, mister Strong.122901:07:45.000 --> 01:07:49.679
Oh I'd like to cash this check please, I.123001:07:49.760 --> 01:07:52.480
See purchasing some property.123101:07:52.559 --> 01:07:59.199
Mister Strong, Yeah, well just a second, a second, Oh123201:07:59.639 --> 01:07:59.960
very well?123301:08:00.039 --> 01:08:01.159
Oh how do you want it?123401:08:01.280 --> 01:08:02.440
So? What doesn't matter?123501:08:02.719 --> 01:08:04.440
That's a small bills would be best?123601:08:04.480 --> 01:08:09.960
Oh, yes, yes, of course, yes, four, here you are,123701:08:10.360 --> 01:08:11.079
thank you, thank.123801:08:10.960 --> 01:08:12.039
You, good mine.123901:08:20.279 --> 01:08:22.960
Several days later, Milton Strong gets off a train in124001:08:23.039 --> 01:08:25.880
a western state, takes a small bus for a little124101:08:25.920 --> 01:08:30.079
mining town fifty miles away. Here, in this vast desert country,124201:08:30.359 --> 01:08:32.640
he will begin a new life, a life of freedom.124301:08:33.159 --> 01:08:36.840
He will change his name, change his destiny. Milton Strong124401:08:36.880 --> 01:08:40.279
has ceased to exist. A new man is born. A124501:08:40.319 --> 01:08:43.640
little bus bounces into Oroville, and two hours later he124601:08:43.760 --> 01:08:46.079
is chatting with a prospector in the gold plate bar.124701:08:48.920 --> 01:08:49.920
Well, I'll tell your partner.124801:08:49.920 --> 01:08:51.359
I've been here a couple of years, and I haven't124901:08:51.359 --> 01:08:53.760
struck much yet. Oh I found little pay dirt. I125001:08:53.880 --> 01:08:54.439
forget along.125101:08:54.840 --> 01:08:57.039
There's supposed to be quite a lot of gold here.125201:08:57.000 --> 01:08:57.319
Isn't there.125301:08:57.439 --> 01:08:57.560
Oh?125401:08:57.680 --> 01:08:58.279
Sure, a chair?125501:08:58.279 --> 01:08:58.880
It's all over.125601:08:59.399 --> 01:09:01.880
Sometimes strike in a day or so, and then sometimes125701:09:01.920 --> 01:09:04.279
you work for years. If a man ain't got capped125801:09:04.319 --> 01:09:06.960
with his own, well, somebody's got a grubstake him.125901:09:07.359 --> 01:09:07.880
What a chair?126001:09:08.560 --> 01:09:10.680
In other words, it's a matter of being optimistic.126101:09:10.880 --> 01:09:11.840
Yeah, yeah, that's it.126201:09:12.199 --> 01:09:13.600
But I think I'd like to try it. Of course126301:09:13.640 --> 01:09:14.960
I don't know anything about mining.126401:09:15.079 --> 01:09:15.880
Oh you don't have to know.126501:09:15.960 --> 01:09:18.720
In this country, it's easy. Anybody can tell golden he126601:09:18.760 --> 01:09:19.079
sees it.126701:09:19.560 --> 01:09:20.079
Where are you from?126801:09:20.399 --> 01:09:23.279
At Los Angeles? I had to come here the doctor said,126901:09:23.279 --> 01:09:24.880
I should get away from the ocean air.127001:09:25.319 --> 01:09:26.079
You don't look sick.127101:09:26.520 --> 01:09:28.319
I was fortunate to have a check up in time.127201:09:29.039 --> 01:09:30.720
I'd like to find a place and try my hand127301:09:30.760 --> 01:09:30.920
of it.127401:09:31.159 --> 01:09:35.039
You mean fireplace, yes, he said, Well I got a127501:09:35.119 --> 01:09:38.920
nice place, three room, cavin good water or there you127601:09:39.000 --> 01:09:39.720
got the patients.127701:09:40.000 --> 01:09:41.039
You mean you want to quit?127801:09:41.359 --> 01:09:44.199
Well no, I don't want to, but I'm out of funds.127901:09:44.560 --> 01:09:46.720
I owe everybody in town, so I ain't got a choice,128001:09:47.319 --> 01:09:49.159
and the fellow who gets it'll probably be the one128101:09:49.199 --> 01:09:49.960
to hit dirt in a week?128201:09:50.119 --> 01:09:50.880
Is it far from town?128301:09:51.159 --> 01:09:54.880
Watch twenty five miles? Kind of lonely for a fellow alone.128401:09:55.359 --> 01:09:56.800
But could I see the place? Sure?128501:09:57.399 --> 01:09:59.359
I ain't been up there for a week and staying128601:09:59.399 --> 01:10:01.319
here in town while my wife went to Sacramento to128701:10:01.399 --> 01:10:01.880
try to raise a.128801:10:01.840 --> 01:10:02.840
Little money from her uncle.128901:10:03.319 --> 01:10:05.600
She just got back this morning. She's doing a little shopping.129001:10:05.640 --> 01:10:05.760
Now.129101:10:06.039 --> 01:10:07.039
Did she raise any money?129201:10:07.159 --> 01:10:09.079
No, just enough to eat on for a few weeks.129301:10:09.439 --> 01:10:12.600
But we've decided to pull out. Besides, I hurt my129401:10:12.760 --> 01:10:13.319
arm last week.129501:10:13.439 --> 01:10:16.039
Oh, but I'd like to look the place over Well here, I.129601:10:16.119 --> 01:10:19.000
Am believe me, I'm ready to go. I'm dead tired.129701:10:19.199 --> 01:10:22.159
Oh, Kate, this is a gentleman who wants to look129801:10:22.239 --> 01:10:25.039
the claim over, but we might take him with us now,129901:10:25.640 --> 01:10:27.960
Oh well sure, why not?130001:10:28.479 --> 01:10:30.199
This is my wife, Kate Rogers.130101:10:30.880 --> 01:10:31.960
How do you do stranger?130201:10:32.039 --> 01:10:32.159
Here?130301:10:33.359 --> 01:10:35.520
Well, let's be on our way. I'm sure you like130401:10:35.600 --> 01:10:35.960
the place.130501:10:36.079 --> 01:10:38.039
The car is just around the corner. How do you130601:10:38.079 --> 01:10:38.840
want to get your bags?130701:10:39.039 --> 01:10:40.359
They're up at the door. I haven't been to a130801:10:40.439 --> 01:10:40.960
hotel yet.130901:10:41.079 --> 01:10:43.199
That's good. We'll beat it the place in about an hour.131001:10:57.560 --> 01:11:01.439
Oh this is it, friends, Fine from here and have131101:11:01.520 --> 01:11:04.119
a look inside, and tomorrow my husband and take you131201:11:04.159 --> 01:11:04.800
over the claim.131301:11:06.760 --> 01:11:09.560
There are three rooms, living room, bedroom, kitchen, all fairly131401:11:09.600 --> 01:11:10.279
good side.131501:11:10.039 --> 01:11:11.600
Will actually certainly be enough for one man.131601:11:12.079 --> 01:11:12.760
You're not married?131701:11:13.119 --> 01:11:14.199
No, no, no, I'm alone.131801:11:15.800 --> 01:11:18.880
Guess I means I light the lamb. No electricity up here?131901:11:19.600 --> 01:11:21.159
Nothing else modern from that matters.132001:11:21.359 --> 01:11:23.279
I understand. Yes, it's very nice.132101:11:23.800 --> 01:11:24.239
I like it.132201:11:24.479 --> 01:11:26.520
Plenty of good water for drinking and sluicing.132301:11:27.159 --> 01:11:29.560
The'er wonderful? That should interest you?132401:11:29.960 --> 01:11:32.319
Are something wrong with you, stranger?132501:11:32.720 --> 01:11:34.760
Yes, well it's just a little touch of lung trouble.132601:11:35.239 --> 01:11:37.720
Oh, by the way, mister Rogers, how did you injure132701:11:37.720 --> 01:11:39.560
your arm? I noticed it's in a sling.132801:11:39.920 --> 01:11:42.760
It was my own darn fault. Kate warned me about132901:11:42.800 --> 01:11:45.520
digging on that ledge. I fell off, and well I133001:11:45.520 --> 01:11:46.760
didn't break it, but the cuts just.133101:11:46.760 --> 01:11:47.439
Don't seem to heal.133201:11:47.600 --> 01:11:50.000
M Oh, I see hour to get back to the property.133301:11:50.119 --> 01:11:52.800
I'm pretty sure there's r on it, rich Or, and133401:11:52.880 --> 01:11:54.199
there's plenty of game around here.133501:11:54.319 --> 01:11:56.159
Come on, take a look at the bedroom in the kitchen.133601:12:00.920 --> 01:12:01.760
This is the bedroom.133701:12:03.119 --> 01:12:03.840
What's a matter, Kate?133801:12:05.319 --> 01:12:07.920
Yeah, oh, steady, Kate, take it easy.133901:12:08.279 --> 01:12:09.439
Who is he?134001:12:09.720 --> 01:12:13.880
I don't know, but he's dead. Whoever he is dead,134101:12:14.239 --> 01:12:19.079
he's been shot. No blood around here that I can see.134201:12:20.000 --> 01:12:22.119
Must have been shot someplace else and made his way134301:12:22.159 --> 01:12:22.800
to our places.134401:12:23.319 --> 01:12:23.800
Who is he?134501:12:23.960 --> 01:12:27.279
I don't know, never seen him before. According to his.134601:12:27.399 --> 01:12:29.600
Clothes, I'd say it's from out of town man, from134701:12:29.640 --> 01:12:32.399
some city. When you're saying yeah, he must be forty134801:12:32.479 --> 01:12:33.600
five or fifty, I'd say.134901:12:33.520 --> 01:12:35.319
See, we better go back to town and get the sheriff.135001:12:35.479 --> 01:12:39.119
Yeah, I guess, so somebody should stay here. You'll have135101:12:39.159 --> 01:12:40.920
to drive me in, Kate, And unless.135201:12:40.680 --> 01:12:42.159
You can drive, mister, oh no, no, no, I never135301:12:42.239 --> 01:12:43.159
drove a card in my life.135401:12:43.640 --> 01:12:44.520
Do you mind staying here.135501:12:44.640 --> 01:12:47.199
No, no, no, I'll standing and come on, Steve, let's go.135601:12:53.319 --> 01:12:55.920
For twenty minutes after the departure of the prospector and135701:12:56.000 --> 01:12:59.880
his wife, Milton stares at the body of the dead man. Then,135801:13:00.119 --> 01:13:03.239
slowly the realization comes upon him. The man is about135901:13:03.279 --> 01:13:07.039
his own age, his own size, from the city, and136001:13:07.159 --> 01:13:10.840
most amazing thing of all, he looks like Milton, a stranger.136101:13:10.960 --> 01:13:13.920
No one knows his name. But no one knows Milton's name.136201:13:14.359 --> 01:13:17.560
He hadn't mentioned his name once. Suddenly he steps to136301:13:17.640 --> 01:13:20.520
the body and goes through the pockets. He finds identifications136401:13:21.119 --> 01:13:24.560
Harry Jacobs. Then in another pocket he finds.136501:13:25.560 --> 01:13:30.720
Good Lord Money Bill Smith. Well there must be one, two, three, four.136601:13:31.479 --> 01:13:36.279
Why there's twenty thousand dollars here twenty thousand dollars and136701:13:36.560 --> 01:13:37.720
no one knows who he is.136801:13:38.000 --> 01:13:39.560
Quickly Milton reaches a decision.136901:13:40.039 --> 01:13:43.439
He exchanges papers with the corpse of Harry Jacobs, replaces137001:13:43.479 --> 01:13:46.079
some of the money in Harry Jacob's pockets and keeps137101:13:46.119 --> 01:13:49.520
some for himself. Then two hours later the rogers return137201:13:49.600 --> 01:13:50.079
with the chef.137301:13:50.720 --> 01:13:53.359
Oh he is sure, huh, I never saw him before?137401:13:54.159 --> 01:13:56.239
They were shot about ten and twelve hours ago.137501:13:56.960 --> 01:13:58.520
How long do you think he's been dead?137601:13:59.479 --> 01:14:00.359
Maybe it's sorry.137701:14:01.159 --> 01:14:04.239
Well, from all appearances, he wasn't shot here. We ain't137801:14:04.279 --> 01:14:05.319
been here for a week, you know.137901:14:05.960 --> 01:14:06.079
Uh.138001:14:06.199 --> 01:14:09.039
Well, see if he's got any identification.138101:14:08.520 --> 01:14:10.760
On, I'd say he was from out of town, from138201:14:10.800 --> 01:14:11.239
the city.138301:14:11.760 --> 01:14:15.199
Oh yo, oh, this gentleman is our guest. He's looking138401:14:15.279 --> 01:14:16.920
the place over with the idea of buying it.138501:14:17.279 --> 01:14:22.520
I see, Oh, here we are. This man's name is138601:14:22.840 --> 01:14:28.800
Milton Strong in New York City. Wait a minute, look138701:14:28.840 --> 01:14:32.399
at this package of bank notes money or wrapped in138801:14:32.439 --> 01:14:34.359
the band, every deprinting on those.138901:14:34.279 --> 01:14:37.600
Bands, First State Bank of Old.139001:14:37.880 --> 01:14:38.319
What do you know?139101:14:39.199 --> 01:14:41.079
This might be the fellow that robbed the bank in town.139201:14:41.159 --> 01:14:41.840
That's afternoon?139301:14:42.079 --> 01:14:43.279
What rob the bank?139401:14:43.439 --> 01:14:46.800
Sure, an't you heard? Kill the casher and got away139501:14:46.840 --> 01:14:49.520
with twenty thousand? Vice president shot at him, but he139601:14:49.600 --> 01:14:52.760
got away. There's probably not what he would And you139701:14:52.840 --> 01:14:53.119
don't know.139801:14:53.199 --> 01:14:55.880
For sure how much they get from the bank twenty thousand?139901:14:56.119 --> 01:14:58.159
How much pitchers are there?140001:14:59.039 --> 01:15:03.600
Let's see, Hey, there's only ten thousand here, And what140101:15:03.720 --> 01:15:06.399
do you make of that? So far as we know,140201:15:06.479 --> 01:15:08.880
there was only one bandit And what do you suppose140301:15:08.920 --> 01:15:12.600
the other ten thousand disappeared? Oh? Well maybe you had140401:15:12.600 --> 01:15:15.640
a court after all, not one was strong.140501:15:15.720 --> 01:15:15.920
Eh.140601:15:16.840 --> 01:15:19.119
Well, let me just get back to town. The authorities140701:15:19.119 --> 01:15:19.479
in New.140801:15:19.439 --> 01:15:21.159
York, the authorities.140901:15:21.880 --> 01:15:23.920
What about his family where the police New York will141001:15:23.920 --> 01:15:27.680
take care of that. Well that's that, I'll return the money.141101:15:27.800 --> 01:15:31.159
You can bury him, Rogers very much here, certainly, what141201:15:31.279 --> 01:15:35.079
else could we do? There's no wondertaker in RL. Body141301:15:35.079 --> 01:15:38.039
wouldn't keep any time in this heat. Well, thanks, Rogers,141401:15:38.039 --> 01:15:39.039
I'll be getting back to town.141501:15:39.239 --> 01:15:39.479
Thanks.141601:15:40.319 --> 01:15:43.159
Yeah, would you say your name was stranger?141701:15:43.800 --> 01:15:46.239
Cool? It's Jacobs, Harry Jacob.141801:15:46.399 --> 01:15:48.479
I see, well it's a long folks.141901:15:55.560 --> 01:15:59.560
So next morning, Milton Straw the bank bandit is buried142001:15:59.600 --> 01:16:02.000
in the sand at the edge of a claim. Yes,142101:16:02.199 --> 01:16:05.119
Milton's strong is no more. He is now known as142201:16:05.199 --> 01:16:08.720
Harry Jacobs. In the afternoon, Roger shows him over the142301:16:08.760 --> 01:16:12.479
property and explains his potentialities. He still hasn't decided, and142401:16:12.640 --> 01:16:14.119
after dinner leaves the cabin again.142501:16:15.439 --> 01:16:16.720
Where's he gone, Nat Steve?142601:16:17.119 --> 01:16:19.720
Oh, he's wandered around by himself, trying to make up142701:16:19.760 --> 01:16:20.840
his mind if he wants a place.142801:16:21.119 --> 01:16:22.720
Sure, it's strange act in Galut.142901:16:22.960 --> 01:16:25.680
I'm just a bit suspicious of him. Kate he said143001:16:25.720 --> 01:16:27.800
he came from Los Anglish, But how do we know?143101:16:28.479 --> 01:16:30.439
Yeah, that's right, how do we know?143201:16:30.920 --> 01:16:33.079
I don't think he's here for his health, and I143301:16:33.199 --> 01:16:35.640
don't think he's a darn bit interested in prospecting.143401:16:36.000 --> 01:16:36.960
Gee, what do you think?143501:16:37.319 --> 01:16:37.640
Tell me?143601:16:38.600 --> 01:16:40.159
Well, I went all.143701:16:40.039 --> 01:16:40.960
Over the property again.143801:16:41.479 --> 01:16:45.199
Well, well you wear yourself out hiking around.143901:16:45.039 --> 01:16:46.479
Like that, mister Rogers.144001:16:46.680 --> 01:16:48.600
I've made up my mind. I'll take the place.144101:16:48.880 --> 01:16:51.600
Yeah. Well, now I'll tell you.144201:16:52.359 --> 01:16:55.600
Kate and I have been talking things over and well,144301:16:56.319 --> 01:16:58.520
take a good deal to buy the place and finance144401:16:58.560 --> 01:16:59.359
the workings properly.144501:17:00.159 --> 01:17:02.439
Plenty of cash, and I want the place to myself.144601:17:02.680 --> 01:17:06.359
Yeah you got the money with you or in a bank?144701:17:06.479 --> 01:17:06.640
Yes?144801:17:06.840 --> 01:17:08.680
I have some with me enough, I'm sure I hadn't144901:17:08.680 --> 01:17:11.880
a deal. Yes, say you came from Los Angeles. Yes,145001:17:12.319 --> 01:17:15.119
you're a funny acting fellow. Jacobs, a little too quiet145101:17:15.159 --> 01:17:18.159
for my likes. Don't talk much. Just won't happened in145201:17:18.239 --> 01:17:18.800
Los Angeles?145301:17:19.079 --> 01:17:19.960
Oh what do you mean?145401:17:20.319 --> 01:17:22.560
You said you came here for your health. If it's145501:17:22.640 --> 01:17:25.520
long trouble, as you said, then why didn't you cough any?145601:17:25.760 --> 01:17:25.960
Oh?145701:17:26.119 --> 01:17:29.920
Well you see, yeah, got any identification on your jacobs?145801:17:30.000 --> 01:17:30.119
Oh?145901:17:30.199 --> 01:17:32.279
Yes, yes, of course like to say it if you146001:17:32.319 --> 01:17:38.840
don't mind. There you were, Hm, Harry Jacobs, New York City,146101:17:39.600 --> 01:17:42.239
New Yorky. But you said los Angeles.146201:17:42.359 --> 01:17:44.560
But I came from New York to Los Angeles. I146301:17:44.800 --> 01:17:46.119
wasn't even California very long.146401:17:46.319 --> 01:17:48.159
And you got plenty of cash?146501:17:48.479 --> 01:17:48.560
Oh?146601:17:48.680 --> 01:17:50.600
Yes, yes? Or not? How much do you want?146701:17:51.279 --> 01:17:51.479
Oh?146801:17:52.920 --> 01:17:53.560
Three thousand?146901:17:53.600 --> 01:17:55.119
All doing three?147001:17:56.119 --> 01:17:58.359
That seemed like a large price for this place.147101:17:58.680 --> 01:18:00.479
You want to, don't you? Jacobs? Real bad?147201:18:00.680 --> 01:18:03.359
Yes, yes, I'd like to have it, all right?147301:18:04.359 --> 01:18:06.119
You and Meal drive into town in the morning. Had147401:18:06.159 --> 01:18:07.199
the lawyer drop the papers?147501:18:07.640 --> 01:18:10.960
Yes, all right, yes, Well, I think I'll go to147601:18:11.000 --> 01:18:16.000
bed now. It's a bit late, so good night. How147701:18:16.039 --> 01:18:18.279
do you think Steve he's got the cash with him?147801:18:18.520 --> 01:18:19.920
This place ain't worth three times?147901:18:20.079 --> 01:18:22.760
No, But if he's got that much, and he's got148001:18:22.760 --> 01:18:23.159
a lot.148101:18:23.079 --> 01:18:28.399
More, shall we Well I could slip into No.148201:18:29.760 --> 01:18:30.840
Just leave everything to me.148301:18:37.119 --> 01:18:41.479
But Milton doesn't sleep well. The strange attitude of Rogers148401:18:41.560 --> 01:18:44.600
and his wife makes him uneasy. Next morning, he is148501:18:44.680 --> 01:18:46.800
up at eight and finds Kate Rodgers in the kitchen.148601:18:47.840 --> 01:18:53.520
Oh, good morning, missus Rogers. Good morning, is mister Rogers?148701:18:53.840 --> 01:18:56.880
Why he drove into town to get the lawyer. He148801:18:57.399 --> 01:19:00.960
didn't want to disturb you so early. What he's gonna148901:19:00.960 --> 01:19:03.119
have the papers made out and bring them back with him.149001:19:03.680 --> 01:19:05.920
Well, I thought he couldn't dry well.149101:19:06.720 --> 01:19:09.199
His arms so much better. He figured he'd be all right.149201:19:10.000 --> 01:19:10.880
How soon will he be back?149301:19:10.880 --> 01:19:13.880
It should have been your half hour ago, nine o'clock. Well,149401:19:13.920 --> 01:19:15.880
there he is now, how about some breakfast?149501:19:16.079 --> 01:19:16.239
Yes?149601:19:16.359 --> 01:19:20.960
Yes, so yeah Jacobs?149701:19:21.079 --> 01:19:23.159
Yes, did you get the papers or rings?149801:19:23.239 --> 01:19:25.119
Well, you don't have to sign any papers, Jacobs.149901:19:25.359 --> 01:19:26.520
I won't be selling the place.150001:19:26.960 --> 01:19:27.279
Why not?150101:19:27.640 --> 01:19:28.239
I don't have to.150201:19:28.560 --> 01:19:30.239
I'll have all the money I need in a few days.150301:19:30.279 --> 01:19:32.640
But you said that I haven't been to any lawyers.150401:19:32.960 --> 01:19:35.199
I've been to the sheriff's office. Sent a wire to150501:19:35.279 --> 01:19:37.199
New York and I got an answer.150601:19:37.439 --> 01:19:38.720
What a wire?150701:19:39.800 --> 01:19:41.239
Put up your hands, Jacobs, Put him up.150801:19:41.880 --> 01:19:43.840
You may be a mile looking little guy, but I'm150901:19:43.880 --> 01:19:45.159
taking no chances with the killer.151001:19:45.760 --> 01:19:46.399
What did you say?151101:19:46.560 --> 01:19:48.720
You want to buy the New York place for banaitry murder?151201:19:48.800 --> 01:19:50.680
Oh, it's a mistake.151301:19:50.760 --> 01:19:51.479
It's a telegram.151401:19:51.680 --> 01:19:53.399
Your description rated.151501:19:53.479 --> 01:19:57.680
Yes, Harry Jacobs forty five five feet six as per151601:19:57.760 --> 01:20:01.640
your description, wanted for a robbery and murderer.151701:20:02.039 --> 01:20:04.800
I'll bank Messenger ten thousand dollars reward?151801:20:05.520 --> 01:20:07.720
Did or lie ten thousand dollars reward?151901:20:07.760 --> 01:20:07.960
Get that?152001:20:08.279 --> 01:20:09.960
I don't know. Tell the mistake. You don't understand.152101:20:09.960 --> 01:20:12.279
I understand all right. You and your partner came out152201:20:12.319 --> 01:20:14.760
here to hide out, probably robbed a half dozen banks152301:20:14.760 --> 01:20:15.079
in the way.152401:20:15.199 --> 01:20:16.399
Pard What partner fellow?152501:20:16.399 --> 01:20:16.760
We burried?152601:20:16.800 --> 01:20:20.159
The other day at Milton Strong the sheriff said there152701:20:20.239 --> 01:20:22.600
must have been two benutes and that was only ten152801:20:22.680 --> 01:20:25.119
thousand on him. What become of the other ten thousand?152901:20:25.239 --> 01:20:25.439
To you?153001:20:25.640 --> 01:20:26.840
I had nothing to do with the hold up.153101:20:26.920 --> 01:20:29.920
You carry too much cash on you, Jacobs. If you've153201:20:29.960 --> 01:20:32.600
got three thousand, you must have more. You were too153301:20:32.720 --> 01:20:34.800
anxious to get this place, and it ain't worth more.153401:20:34.760 --> 01:20:35.279
Than a thousand.153501:20:35.319 --> 01:20:36.399
It's but you're wrong, Rogers.153601:20:36.479 --> 01:20:38.039
You're going back to time with me, Jacobs.153701:20:38.319 --> 01:20:40.119
I'm collecting that ten thousand rewards.153801:20:40.119 --> 01:20:42.159
No, no, no, please don't take me back. I can't153901:20:42.199 --> 01:20:42.840
go back to New York.154001:20:42.840 --> 01:20:43.199
I can't.154101:20:43.439 --> 01:20:45.520
I can imagine that, fell Fryer.154201:20:45.800 --> 01:20:47.439
You've got to listen to me. You've just got to154301:20:47.600 --> 01:20:48.439
start your stuff, Kate.154401:20:48.600 --> 01:20:49.600
He's got the money some place.154501:20:49.680 --> 01:20:53.159
Wait, I've got the money and here it is the154601:20:53.239 --> 01:20:53.920
money from the bank.154701:20:54.640 --> 01:20:56.960
There jee the.154801:20:57.000 --> 01:21:02.479
Same bank wrappers. Yeah, thousand, No, there's more another.154901:21:02.880 --> 01:21:04.560
The ten thousand of the rappers belongs to the bank.155001:21:04.760 --> 01:21:05.479
The rest is mine.155101:21:05.560 --> 01:21:06.319
That's all we need to know.155201:21:06.479 --> 01:21:09.720
Jacobs, Come on, and I hope the sheriff don't spill155301:21:09.760 --> 01:21:11.880
this before you're locked up. The town would tear you155401:21:11.960 --> 01:21:12.239
the pace.155501:21:12.319 --> 01:21:14.560
Look, look, just listen to me. I swear I never155601:21:14.600 --> 01:21:16.399
saw that dead man in my life. I did come155701:21:16.439 --> 01:21:19.680
here to get away from embarrassing circumstances. I wanted to155801:21:19.720 --> 01:21:22.279
lose myself. After you went for the sheriff, I searched155901:21:22.319 --> 01:21:25.399
the man's pockets. I found his identification, and because he156001:21:25.479 --> 01:21:27.880
resembled me, I switched his papers with mine.156101:21:28.199 --> 01:21:30.800
And then then I found the money. I decided to156201:21:30.880 --> 01:21:33.039
keep some of it. I am Milton Strong and the156301:21:33.119 --> 01:21:34.319
dead man was Harry Jacobs.156401:21:34.479 --> 01:21:35.159
What a story.156501:21:35.520 --> 01:21:37.359
Don't believe that. Don't send it back at the York.156601:21:37.439 --> 01:21:38.319
There's no reward for me.156701:21:38.359 --> 01:21:39.640
The troop would come out and you wouldn't get a156801:21:39.720 --> 01:21:41.720
dime down here. You keep this money I took from156901:21:41.760 --> 01:21:43.279
the robber and let me go. You don't want to157001:21:43.319 --> 01:21:44.079
live know the difference?157101:21:44.199 --> 01:21:45.800
Oh no, I'm not that dumb.157201:21:46.439 --> 01:21:48.560
I'll turn you and the money in and collect a reward.157301:21:48.920 --> 01:21:50.079
I'd rather get it legally.157401:21:50.800 --> 01:21:53.159
Come on, Jacobs. Before the town gets wise.157501:22:00.039 --> 01:22:02.239
Milton is handed over to the sheriff and locked up157601:22:02.279 --> 01:22:05.159
in the flimsy jail. They have wired New York and157701:22:05.239 --> 01:22:09.479
a detective with extradition papers is flying west. But unfortunately,157801:22:09.600 --> 01:22:12.239
the word has gotten around town that the jail holds157901:22:12.279 --> 01:22:15.319
the murderer of the bank cashier. A crowd of men158001:22:15.640 --> 01:22:18.199
silent man has gathered in the front of the jail.158101:22:19.319 --> 01:22:21.279
I don't know what we're gonna do about this, Rogers.158201:22:21.880 --> 01:22:23.720
Are you sure you didn't say anything about it. I158301:22:23.800 --> 01:22:24.600
didn't say a word.158401:22:25.239 --> 01:22:26.800
I don't know how they found out about it, but158501:22:27.399 --> 01:22:28.920
maybe some of your deputies talk.158601:22:29.119 --> 01:22:32.279
I warned not to say a word that online. Crowds158701:22:32.279 --> 01:22:35.479
have shot and yell, and I'm afraid of the crowd158801:22:35.520 --> 01:22:37.880
that just stands and says nothing. A sure in the158901:22:37.960 --> 01:22:41.479
wallpan and detective from New York should have been here159001:22:41.520 --> 01:22:44.239
an hour ago. I sent the car to meet the plane.159101:22:44.279 --> 01:22:45.239
Maybe the plane was late.159201:22:45.439 --> 01:22:49.159
Yeah, Well, if the crowd starts anything, somebody's gonna get hurt. Hey,159301:22:49.239 --> 01:22:51.439
you fellows better get your shotguns ready. They might break159401:22:51.439 --> 01:22:54.880
out any minute now Jacob has got any more to say.159501:22:55.000 --> 01:22:58.119
I've told you that I'm Milton Strong. I had nothing159601:22:58.159 --> 01:22:59.359
to do with the bank hold up.159701:23:00.039 --> 01:23:01.840
Crowd looks surly, so I guess I better put you159801:23:01.920 --> 01:23:02.520
back in this cell.159901:23:03.359 --> 01:23:04.880
Wait a minute, here comes your cash.160001:23:05.000 --> 01:23:07.800
Errif it's about time, go out and tell Jacob driver160101:23:07.920 --> 01:23:09.520
to stay around the back of the jail and stay160201:23:09.560 --> 01:23:11.720
in the car. Don't let that crowd and know what160301:23:11.800 --> 01:23:16.079
he's doing, right, Tarriff, I get you sure, Tell me160401:23:16.359 --> 01:23:18.000
that's right. And I'm mighty glad to see you.160501:23:19.239 --> 01:23:19.840
Yeah, I know, I know.160601:23:20.199 --> 01:23:22.479
Let's get out of business, and crowd outside is going160701:23:22.520 --> 01:23:23.840
to get him. Patience pretty soon.160801:23:23.840 --> 01:23:25.079
Kah, what do they want?160901:23:25.560 --> 01:23:26.720
What they call justice?161001:23:27.119 --> 01:23:27.800
This fellow here.161101:23:27.800 --> 01:23:30.000
Held up the bank and killed the cash here, But161201:23:30.119 --> 01:23:32.359
I wanted to be sure he was Harry Jacobs. He161301:23:32.479 --> 01:23:35.079
had identification on him. But he claims he's melting strong.161401:23:35.600 --> 01:23:36.399
Milton was strong.161501:23:36.680 --> 01:23:36.920
Yeah.161601:23:37.520 --> 01:23:40.800
We buried Milton Strong several days ago. He found part161701:23:40.840 --> 01:23:44.039
of the bank money on his body. Milton's strong, yeah,161801:23:44.840 --> 01:23:46.960
But if he's really Harry Jacobs, I'd prefer to get161901:23:47.039 --> 01:23:48.119
him out of here and deal with him.162001:23:48.119 --> 01:23:48.600
In New York.162101:23:49.199 --> 01:23:51.520
I had one Lynchon here and I don't want another.162201:23:51.680 --> 01:23:54.720
But he isn't Harry Jacobs. I knew Harry personally. He162301:23:54.760 --> 01:23:55.640
ain't Harry Jacobs.162401:23:55.680 --> 01:23:59.000
No, but he is Milton Strong. Harry Jacobs was a162501:23:59.079 --> 01:24:01.279
professional hold up, but not Milton Strong.162601:24:01.479 --> 01:24:04.279
And we really buried Harry Jacobs. What do you mean?162701:24:05.039 --> 01:24:06.880
I took this fellow to my claim with the idea162801:24:06.920 --> 01:24:08.920
of selling it to him. Yeah, we found a dead162901:24:08.960 --> 01:24:11.399
man in my cabin. I came after the sheriff. And163001:24:11.600 --> 01:24:13.760
this fellow claims that while we were going to exchange163101:24:13.800 --> 01:24:14.640
papers to the dead man.163201:24:14.760 --> 01:24:17.079
Well, from all appearances, that's just what he did. But163301:24:17.159 --> 01:24:20.520
why should he do that? Wow, Milton Strong is wanted163401:24:20.560 --> 01:24:21.239
in New York too.163501:24:22.359 --> 01:24:24.560
I'm wanted in New York. What for?163601:24:25.199 --> 01:24:27.640
As if you didn't know? Oh, what's he done?163701:24:27.720 --> 01:24:28.439
What she wanted for?163801:24:28.840 --> 01:24:30.079
Hey? Hed crowd is starting.163901:24:30.119 --> 01:24:32.239
Get him out of here. Hurry at the back way.164001:24:32.159 --> 01:24:33.479
The car's waiting. Let's go out.164101:24:33.680 --> 01:24:35.600
You can't catch eleven pretty train. I'll sell him off164201:24:35.640 --> 01:24:36.399
as long as they can.164301:24:41.239 --> 01:24:42.520
All the way back to New York.164401:24:42.600 --> 01:24:44.159
Lieutenant Clark will not talk.164501:24:44.800 --> 01:24:48.000
They ride across the country in utter silence and three164601:24:48.079 --> 01:24:50.880
days later, Milton sits in the office of Inspector Burns164701:24:50.920 --> 01:24:51.920
of the New York Police.164801:24:53.840 --> 01:24:56.640
Milton, on the morning of July twentieth, did you catch164901:24:56.680 --> 01:24:58.640
your check at a bank at twenty first in Lexington?165001:24:59.399 --> 01:25:01.760
Yes, I did, a check made out to you by165101:25:01.880 --> 01:25:02.319
your wife.165201:25:02.520 --> 01:25:06.760
Yes. Are you sure your wife wrote that check? Well, yes,165301:25:06.920 --> 01:25:07.439
yes she did.165401:25:07.960 --> 01:25:09.840
Why did you leave town the same day?165501:25:09.960 --> 01:25:12.600
Well? I went on a vacation. Why didn't your wife165601:25:12.640 --> 01:25:16.680
go with him? Why? Because I wanted to be alone?165701:25:17.079 --> 01:25:19.199
That is, you might as well tell the truth, Meltain.165801:25:19.720 --> 01:25:25.279
You haven't a chance to get out of it. I didn't, Sorry, Milton.165901:25:25.800 --> 01:25:26.560
We have proof.166001:25:27.039 --> 01:25:30.800
We have a witness, a witness, Yes, bring in.166101:25:30.840 --> 01:25:32.960
The witness, Lieutenant, come in.166201:25:33.079 --> 01:25:33.399
Please?166301:25:37.079 --> 01:25:38.359
Where have you been, Milton?166401:25:39.239 --> 01:25:39.640
Martha?166501:25:40.039 --> 01:25:41.399
Why didn't you let me know where you were?166601:25:41.720 --> 01:25:41.960
Please?166701:25:42.039 --> 01:25:42.279
Please?166801:25:42.359 --> 01:25:43.720
Mother, let's talk about it here.166901:25:43.720 --> 01:25:44.840
What are you doing in Arizona?167001:25:44.960 --> 01:25:46.880
I was just taking a little vacation. I was gonna167101:25:46.880 --> 01:25:48.279
write you. I tried to buy a cabin in the167201:25:48.319 --> 01:25:51.560
mountains for you and me, Martha, for us.167301:25:52.399 --> 01:25:54.880
What don't you dare at that tide?167401:25:55.159 --> 01:25:55.199
No?167501:25:55.279 --> 01:25:58.640
No, no, mother, I've quit smoking. I wasn't even conscious of.167601:25:58.640 --> 01:25:59.840
What I was doing And what are you doing that?167701:26:00.479 --> 01:26:01.119
You know what's raining?167801:26:01.199 --> 01:26:02.600
And I took them off outside Martha.167901:26:03.640 --> 01:26:05.039
Come on, Milton, let's go home.168001:26:05.680 --> 01:26:09.239
I have a few things to talk over with you. Yes, God, well,168101:26:09.439 --> 01:26:10.840
come on, get up out of that chair.168201:26:11.600 --> 01:26:12.479
Yes, yes, done.168301:26:12.760 --> 01:26:13.319
Just a minute.168401:26:13.640 --> 01:26:14.680
What about this charge?168501:26:14.760 --> 01:26:15.720
This check forgery?168601:26:16.279 --> 01:26:16.760
Forgery?168701:26:17.880 --> 01:26:20.680
Oh, I wrote that check. I remember the whole thing.168801:26:20.800 --> 01:26:20.920
Now.168901:26:21.039 --> 01:26:22.560
Then what about the charge of white desertion?169001:26:22.760 --> 01:26:23.720
He's come back, hasn't he?169101:26:23.880 --> 01:26:24.880
But we brought him back.169201:26:26.600 --> 01:26:28.920
I wrote the check so you can make a down169301:26:29.000 --> 01:26:31.800
payment on a house. But like a child, he is.169401:26:31.920 --> 01:26:34.319
He he wanted to take a trip and hunt gold.169501:26:35.199 --> 01:26:40.279
He's always been a a adventuresome sore. Well, go on, Milton,169601:26:40.359 --> 01:26:42.800
get along, and if a dare like that dirty pipe,169701:26:42.800 --> 01:26:43.760
I'll shake your head off.169801:26:44.079 --> 01:26:51.000
Go on, go on, Yes, done, a good day, gentlemen.169901:26:55.720 --> 01:26:58.680
Well it just goes to show you that no man170001:26:58.800 --> 01:27:02.800
can escape his destiny, no man can change faith, and170101:27:02.880 --> 01:27:05.079
when he attempts to do so, he only conjures up170201:27:05.159 --> 01:27:09.479
far worse conditions for himself. Poor Milton Strong ran away170301:27:09.520 --> 01:27:12.279
from things and ended up at the starting point back170401:27:12.399 --> 01:27:12.920
with Martha.170501:27:13.760 --> 01:27:14.640
But he's happy now.170601:27:15.239 --> 01:27:18.600
Martha's nagging is now sweet music to his ears because170701:27:18.680 --> 01:27:19.920
Martha really loves him.170801:27:20.640 --> 01:27:21.119
Out West.170901:27:21.119 --> 01:27:24.000
They almost sledged him, nearly took his freedom away, but171001:27:24.159 --> 01:27:26.479
Martha saved him. She lied for him.171101:27:27.119 --> 01:27:28.880
Yes, Milton did forge that check.171201:27:28.960 --> 01:27:31.279
He was even going to kill Martha, but he got171301:27:31.359 --> 01:27:34.000
cold feet the moment he walked into a room. But171401:27:34.159 --> 01:27:36.840
Milton will be a good boy now. In his search171501:27:36.920 --> 01:27:40.000
for so called freedom, he came close to the jaws171601:27:40.039 --> 01:27:40.479
of death.171701:27:41.399 --> 01:27:42.640
Lucky Milton.171801:28:05.880 --> 01:28:16.000
ZBS has presented The Whistler. Original music for this production171901:28:16.199 --> 01:28:19.439
was composed by Wilbur Hatch and conducted by Ivan Ditmars.172001:28:19.760 --> 01:28:22.399
The Whistler has written and directed by Jay Donald Wilson172101:28:22.479 --> 01:28:28.479
and originates from Columbia Square in Hollywood. Next week, same time, I.172201:28:28.880 --> 01:28:32.399
The Whistler will return to tell you another unusual story.172301:28:33.319 --> 01:28:33.800
Good night.172401:28:37.119 --> 01:28:40.239
This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.172501:29:04.000 --> 01:29:09.199
My dear, you do seem a bit on edge, although172601:29:09.279 --> 01:29:17.920
I suppose that is the that's the goal. Not everything172701:29:18.119 --> 01:29:24.720
is as it seems all the time, and not just misinterpreted,172801:29:24.840 --> 01:29:34.359
but malicious too, whether it's a sunny day full of172901:29:34.520 --> 01:29:42.800
hope possibility, or perhaps it's just your lover's eyes or173001:29:42.960 --> 01:29:48.000
something as rudimentary as Uncle Henry's Rose Bush.173101:30:00.119 --> 01:30:00.880
Suspense.173201:30:06.239 --> 01:30:09.399
This is the Man in Black here again to introduce173301:30:09.479 --> 01:30:14.560
Columbia's program Suspense, Our starring Hollywood cast of characters, reads173401:30:14.560 --> 01:30:15.119
as follows.173501:30:15.159 --> 01:30:18.159
For Tonight as Aunt Julie, one of those.173601:30:18.079 --> 01:30:21.159
Stark, severe and terrifying women who has encountered ever so173701:30:21.279 --> 01:30:25.159
often along the grimmer outposts of the American countryside. Miss173801:30:25.239 --> 01:30:29.079
Agnes Moorehead as Carol Lindon, the girl who returned to173901:30:29.119 --> 01:30:32.439
a scene of childhood happiness and found terror living in174001:30:32.520 --> 01:30:36.800
the house. Miss Ellen Drew as Paul Carroll's husband, who174101:30:36.840 --> 01:30:39.680
had his own ideas as to the explanation of these174201:30:39.720 --> 01:30:40.439
strange events.174301:30:40.840 --> 01:30:43.239
Mister Ted reed a first.174401:30:43.119 --> 01:30:47.039
Radio play by Larry Roman called Uncle Henry's Rosebush is174501:30:47.119 --> 01:30:51.359
Tonight's tale of suspense. If you have been with us before,174601:30:51.880 --> 01:30:54.520
you will know that suspense is compounded of mystery and174701:30:54.600 --> 01:30:59.600
suspicion and dangerous adventure. In this series are tales calculated174801:30:59.680 --> 01:31:03.039
to to stir your nerves, to offer you up a174901:31:03.079 --> 01:31:06.600
carrious situation and then withhold a solution until the last175001:31:06.760 --> 01:31:10.239
possible move. And so it is with Uncle Henry's Rosebush175101:31:10.479 --> 01:31:13.359
and the performances of Agnes Moorehead is Aunt Julie, Hell175201:31:13.399 --> 01:31:14.920
and Drew as cattle and ted riders.175301:31:15.000 --> 01:31:18.880
Paul, we again hope to keep you in suspense.175401:31:28.640 --> 01:31:30.720
I shall tell you the story exactly as it happened.175501:31:31.119 --> 01:31:34.920
There's no use pretending. I'll never forget, and I know175601:31:35.159 --> 01:31:38.439
I'll not awake and find it all a dream. It's real,175701:31:39.039 --> 01:31:41.079
and for the rest of my life I shall know175801:31:41.199 --> 01:31:49.920
it's real. Paul was to have his first vacation since175901:31:49.960 --> 01:31:52.920
we were married. I suggested we visit my aunt Julie176001:31:52.920 --> 01:31:55.760
and uncle Henry, who had a small farm upstate. They176101:31:55.800 --> 01:31:58.159
had always been very kind to me when I was176201:31:58.199 --> 01:32:00.640
a child. I used to spend my summer vacation with him.176301:32:01.119 --> 01:32:04.000
They love children. I've often wondered why they never had176401:32:04.039 --> 01:32:06.680
any of their own. Some time ago I had lost176501:32:06.720 --> 01:32:09.479
track of them. They had never seen Paul, and I176601:32:09.640 --> 01:32:12.359
was certain they'd like to. Paul said it would be fine,176701:32:13.000 --> 01:32:16.279
we'll surprise them. I thought we were the ones who176801:32:16.319 --> 01:32:17.119
were surprised.176901:32:17.359 --> 01:32:17.600
Ah.177001:32:27.199 --> 01:32:29.920
Just a few more miles, Paul. Remember this road we177101:32:30.079 --> 01:32:31.680
used to hike along it going to the village.177201:32:31.800 --> 01:32:31.960
Ah.177301:32:32.039 --> 01:32:35.720
This country air is wonderful. Two weeks of green grass177401:32:35.800 --> 01:32:38.439
and wicker chairs. I can't think of anything better.177501:32:38.720 --> 01:32:41.560
How you love Aunt Julian and Akuld Henry. They live alone,177601:32:41.760 --> 01:32:44.520
quiet and peaceful. Be quite a change from the city.177701:32:44.760 --> 01:32:47.720
Yes, now they must be happy together how they are,177801:32:47.840 --> 01:32:51.439
But they're lonely. Smooth lawns and orchards and flowers.177901:32:51.920 --> 01:32:55.119
Uncle Henry planted huge rose bushes around the porch. Every178001:32:55.199 --> 01:32:56.640
night as I crawl in the bed. He used to178101:32:56.680 --> 01:32:58.880
bring me a road. They're his favorite flowers.178201:32:58.920 --> 01:33:00.520
Ah, vacation, Here we come.178301:33:00.840 --> 01:33:01.960
Come on, Carl, let's go.178401:33:11.760 --> 01:33:13.079
Just around the ben Here we go.178501:33:19.359 --> 01:33:26.359
There it, answer, Carol, Look by, Paul. Are you sure178601:33:26.439 --> 01:33:27.079
this is the place?178701:33:27.319 --> 01:33:30.439
Yes? But all the weeds and the broken shutters looks178801:33:30.479 --> 01:33:32.920
as though it's been neglected for months. I don't understand.178901:33:33.600 --> 01:33:34.680
Perhaps it's deserted.179001:33:35.279 --> 01:33:36.560
Chancey it's their home.179101:33:37.640 --> 01:33:46.760
Oh, come on, let's go up and see. The dirt179201:33:46.840 --> 01:33:54.720
on this porch must be an inch thick. No answer,179301:33:55.520 --> 01:33:56.079
nobody here.179401:33:56.359 --> 01:33:58.159
Look Paul. Over there at the end of the porch,179501:33:58.520 --> 01:34:01.279
the rose bush. Uncle Henry's rose bush.179601:34:02.159 --> 01:34:05.279
Why it's trimmed and neat. It's the only thing that179701:34:05.359 --> 01:34:06.479
seems to be taken care of.179801:34:06.800 --> 01:34:09.479
Then somebody must be here. Maybe they can tell us179901:34:09.520 --> 01:34:12.319
what happened to Aunt Julie and Uncle Henry. Knock again,180001:34:15.840 --> 01:34:23.039
someone's coming. Well, we're looking for a mister and missus Connors.180101:34:23.279 --> 01:34:27.960
They used to live. Why, Aunt Julie, I didn't recognize you,180201:34:29.159 --> 01:34:33.840
but it's me and Julie. It's Carol. I wasn't expecting180301:34:33.920 --> 01:34:37.960
you of Paul's vacation. We thought we'd spend it here. Well,180401:34:38.000 --> 01:34:41.119
you've been asking for us for years. This is Paul,180501:34:41.279 --> 01:34:42.960
my husband so much.180601:34:43.000 --> 01:34:43.720
Why did you come?180701:34:44.079 --> 01:34:48.279
What I said? Why did you come? Aren't you glad180801:34:48.279 --> 01:34:53.640
to see us and Julie? Something's happened. Nothing's happened, but180901:34:53.760 --> 01:34:54.079
it did.181001:34:54.439 --> 01:34:54.720
Tell me.181101:34:54.760 --> 01:34:57.720
Aunt Julie will help, of course? Will you shouldn't have come.181201:34:58.279 --> 01:35:00.840
Well, Carol, if she doesn't want us, let's no Paul.181301:35:02.000 --> 01:35:04.960
This isn't like you, Aunt Julie. Something dreadful has happened.181401:35:05.000 --> 01:35:05.199
I know.181501:35:05.439 --> 01:35:08.119
Oh Carol, please go listen. If it's money, Aunt Julie,181601:35:08.279 --> 01:35:10.680
well we haven't got too much, but you're welcome to me.181701:35:10.760 --> 01:35:13.720
I tell you nothing's wrong, but there must be this house.181801:35:13.800 --> 01:35:16.319
You're her husband. I'm asking you to take her and181901:35:16.359 --> 01:35:16.800
go away.182001:35:17.239 --> 01:35:20.880
Oh come on, Carol, we're not wanted. Let's go.182101:35:21.199 --> 01:35:22.039
We're going to stay.182201:35:23.279 --> 01:35:26.159
Well, there you are. She's your niece, and you know182301:35:26.239 --> 01:35:27.199
how stubborn she can be.182401:35:27.439 --> 01:35:33.960
We're going to stay. Where's Uncle Henry? I say, where's182501:35:34.039 --> 01:35:37.920
Uncle Henry? He's not here. But where he's not here182601:35:38.000 --> 01:35:41.159
isn't not enough. He's there, he won't be Julie.182701:35:46.520 --> 01:35:46.800
I kno.182801:35:47.000 --> 01:35:50.159
They'd bewildered, and Julie had run out of the room.182901:35:50.760 --> 01:35:54.640
Perhaps she was crying. I don't know. I just knew183001:35:54.680 --> 01:35:58.960
that Uncle Henry was gone, he had left her. It183101:35:59.079 --> 01:36:04.000
seemed strangely impossible. It had always been so happy, so183201:36:04.199 --> 01:36:07.199
supremely happy, that it seemed that the only thing that183301:36:07.319 --> 01:36:15.000
could separate them on this earth was death. Yeah, and183401:36:15.119 --> 01:36:18.800
now this, I couldn't believe it. Paul and I walked183501:36:18.840 --> 01:36:21.880
into the living room was almost as dusty as the outside.183601:36:22.560 --> 01:36:25.800
The curtains were dirty, the floor littered with old newspapers.183701:36:26.600 --> 01:36:29.319
The entire room showed the same signs and neglect as183801:36:29.359 --> 01:36:33.119
the outside. And when I recalled how neat aunt Julie183901:36:33.119 --> 01:36:36.079
had always been with her housework, Oh, a feeling of184001:36:36.279 --> 01:36:41.239
apprehension crawled up my back. Frankly, I was fright frightfully worried,184101:36:41.319 --> 01:36:43.800
and I could tell by the look on Paul's face184201:36:43.840 --> 01:36:47.399
that he was worried too. I don't like it, Paul,184301:36:48.000 --> 01:36:49.159
or something strange here.184401:36:49.560 --> 01:36:52.560
Yeah, I never saw a house in such a mission.184501:36:52.560 --> 01:36:55.319
It's not just the house. It's more than that, something184601:36:55.439 --> 01:36:56.880
much more. I'm sure of it.184701:36:57.199 --> 01:36:59.479
Well, really, Carol, it's none of our business, don't you.184801:37:00.159 --> 01:37:02.920
Perhaps not, But you don't know Aunt Julie like I do.184901:37:03.560 --> 01:37:06.079
She'd never ask for help, no matter how much she185001:37:06.159 --> 01:37:09.359
needed it. I'm just not trying, Paul.185101:37:09.840 --> 01:37:10.760
I suppose you're right.185201:37:11.279 --> 01:37:13.159
They've always been so kind to me. I've got to185301:37:13.239 --> 01:37:13.680
help them.185401:37:14.279 --> 01:37:17.439
How can we, Carol, We don't even know what's wrong.185501:37:17.800 --> 01:37:21.199
They were always so happy together. Somehow, I can't believe185601:37:21.199 --> 01:37:26.000
they've broken up. Something else has happened, something terrible, and185701:37:26.079 --> 01:37:27.760
I'm going to stay till I find out what.185801:37:28.920 --> 01:37:30.960
Well, in that case, we better find a place to sleep.185901:37:31.159 --> 01:37:32.439
All the bedrooms are upstairs.186001:37:32.720 --> 01:37:39.159
Come on, right, Well, look at the dust on the banister.186101:37:40.000 --> 01:37:43.119
I bet this place hasn't been cleaned in a month, Paul, Eh,186201:37:43.800 --> 01:37:44.079
did you.186301:37:44.079 --> 01:37:48.359
See the way she looks? Yeah, her face seems completely186401:37:48.479 --> 01:37:52.159
wrinkled with worry. I wonder I didn't recognize her. She186501:37:52.279 --> 01:37:54.800
seems much older and frightened.186601:37:55.560 --> 01:37:57.439
Well, do you think she's ill.186701:37:57.640 --> 01:37:58.119
I don't know.186801:37:58.239 --> 01:37:58.960
I wish I did.186901:38:02.159 --> 01:38:06.880
Look at that hall, gloomy and dirty. Where do these187001:38:06.960 --> 01:38:07.520
doors go to?187101:38:07.880 --> 01:38:10.720
That one's to Aunt Julie's room, and this one's Uncle Henry's.187201:38:11.319 --> 01:38:13.279
I want to cross the way is despair? I guess187301:38:13.319 --> 01:38:13.920
that's ours.187401:38:14.079 --> 01:38:19.880
Well, let's go in. Wow, what a miss.187501:38:20.239 --> 01:38:21.880
Well, might as well get busy cleaning.187601:38:21.960 --> 01:38:24.319
Eh, there's nothing like a good round of house cleaning187701:38:24.399 --> 01:38:26.159
before supper, Paul.187801:38:27.199 --> 01:38:29.399
So long as Uncle Henry's not here, maybe we can187901:38:29.479 --> 01:38:32.039
take his room. It's got an adjoining door to Aunt188001:38:32.119 --> 01:38:34.560
Julie's and in case she needs, this will be near.188101:38:34.760 --> 01:38:36.800
Okay, it doesn't matter to me which room we clean.188201:38:37.199 --> 01:38:37.520
Let's go.188301:38:37.920 --> 01:38:44.119
Yeah, this one over here, well this is Oh, look188401:38:44.239 --> 01:38:46.239
it's all clean and neat.188501:38:47.039 --> 01:38:50.439
We'll all be done. See only clean place in the188601:38:50.479 --> 01:38:51.039
whole house.188701:38:51.279 --> 01:38:55.359
I don't understand. Every room is inches and dirt except188801:38:55.439 --> 01:38:59.560
this one. The outside is completely neglected except the rose bush,188901:39:00.319 --> 01:39:03.800
Uncle Henry's room and Uncle Henry's rose bush. I don't189001:39:03.880 --> 01:39:04.119
get it.189101:39:04.800 --> 01:39:08.199
Well, look on the dresser there, Aunt Julie's picture and189201:39:08.279 --> 01:39:09.279
a pipe and tobacco.189301:39:09.680 --> 01:39:12.039
Why that's Uncle Henry's favorite pipe?189401:39:13.319 --> 01:39:17.560
Sure is full of shirts, socks, underwear. Cal If your189501:39:17.640 --> 01:39:19.000
uncle went away, why did he leave this?189601:39:19.239 --> 01:39:19.359
Oh?189701:39:19.520 --> 01:39:20.880
No strange?189801:39:21.000 --> 01:39:23.279
But what's that paper, Paul?189901:39:23.840 --> 01:39:27.840
Why it looks like it is? And an insurance policy190001:39:28.319 --> 01:39:31.800
for thirty thousand dollars payable to your Aunt Julie in190101:39:31.920 --> 01:39:34.720
case Uncle Henry dies cals is doing here?190201:39:35.279 --> 01:39:37.119
Aunt Julia, what are you doing here?190301:39:37.199 --> 01:39:37.319
Oh?190401:39:37.399 --> 01:39:39.319
We saw that in your hand, and insurance to me.190501:39:39.439 --> 01:39:45.520
But I keep out of this room, a car. I190601:39:45.600 --> 01:39:48.520
didn't know how to take this. Uncle Henry's pipe and190701:39:48.560 --> 01:39:51.199
all his clothes were still in his room, and yet190801:39:52.000 --> 01:39:55.600
Uncle Henry was gone. I couldn't understand why Aunt Julie190901:39:55.640 --> 01:39:58.640
got so angry. I looked to Paul for an explanation.191001:39:59.319 --> 01:40:01.640
I could tell her something on his mind, but I191101:40:01.720 --> 01:40:04.479
didn't dare ask him what it was, and he didn't say.191201:40:06.000 --> 01:40:08.000
After Aunt Julie's outburst, we went back to the spare191301:40:08.079 --> 01:40:10.479
room and cleaned it, and we washed and started downstairs191401:40:10.520 --> 01:40:10.920
for supper.191501:40:13.760 --> 01:40:16.840
Want your step, Carol, he's on the strongest looking stairs.191601:40:18.319 --> 01:40:20.239
What do you make of Julie's behavior?191701:40:20.880 --> 01:40:22.039
Frankly, Carol, I'm worried.191801:40:22.239 --> 01:40:26.680
I'm frightened. As Will admitted, there's something strange that frightens191901:40:26.760 --> 01:40:27.279
me to death.192001:40:28.439 --> 01:40:30.680
I don't think there's anything to be frightened of. It's192101:40:31.000 --> 01:40:34.920
just a yeah, that's the last step the way to192201:40:35.000 --> 01:40:38.520
the kitchen. Right. Oh, as I was saying, I don't192301:40:38.520 --> 01:40:48.239
think there's Wow. That was close. Ves just missed you. Yes,192401:40:48.319 --> 01:40:50.439
and it was a heavy one. What at the top192501:40:50.479 --> 01:40:52.479
of the stairway hit me?192601:40:52.680 --> 01:40:55.359
Yeah, oh, Paul, I'm frightened.192701:40:55.680 --> 01:40:56.600
Coming down the stairs.192801:40:56.960 --> 01:40:57.680
What happened?192901:40:58.119 --> 01:40:59.920
These fell just miss Carroll.193001:41:00.319 --> 01:41:01.319
I don't worry about it.193101:41:01.520 --> 01:41:04.800
I didn't like the vase anywhere the vase? What about Carol?193201:41:04.920 --> 01:41:05.760
She almost got killed?193301:41:06.000 --> 01:41:09.560
Never mind, it was an accident, an accident. We were193401:41:09.640 --> 01:41:12.199
just going in for supper. Aunt Julie, care to join us? Well,193501:41:12.479 --> 01:41:14.920
I come on, Aunt Julie, it'll do you good.193601:41:15.720 --> 01:41:16.399
All right.193701:41:17.960 --> 01:41:21.079
Here, you twist it right down. I'll have something prepared193801:41:21.119 --> 01:41:21.560
in a minute.193901:41:21.880 --> 01:41:23.279
I'm not very hungry.194001:41:24.720 --> 01:41:27.399
Oh nonsense. And Julie, I'll fix something that will make194101:41:27.439 --> 01:41:28.159
your mouth water.194201:41:30.479 --> 01:41:33.279
You know, when when Carol and I get through cleaning194301:41:33.359 --> 01:41:35.239
this place up, it looked just like you.194401:41:36.079 --> 01:41:36.279
Yeah.194501:41:36.840 --> 01:41:39.720
Sure, I think when Carol and I have a family,194601:41:40.319 --> 01:41:44.800
we'll take them to a farm. Really, yes, yes, you194701:41:44.880 --> 01:41:46.840
know this this place would be swell for children?194801:41:47.279 --> 01:41:49.199
Oh what do you mean?194901:41:54.359 --> 01:41:56.920
What did I say? What's the matter?195001:41:57.720 --> 01:42:00.800
What's the matter with Aunt Julie? Where's she going?195101:42:01.000 --> 01:42:03.439
I don't know. I was just trying to make conversations.195201:42:03.560 --> 01:42:06.439
Just talked about children on a farm, that's all, Paul.195301:42:06.479 --> 01:42:07.520
I'm frightfully worried.195401:42:08.039 --> 01:42:09.479
Do you think we ought to call a doctor for195501:42:10.199 --> 01:42:10.680
I don't know.195601:42:11.039 --> 01:42:13.760
We have to do something. She certainly doesn't look too well.195701:42:14.000 --> 01:42:17.880
But maybe she isn't really sick. What do you mean, Well,195801:42:18.560 --> 01:42:21.920
maybe if your uncle Henry did leave her, well, then maybe.195901:42:21.880 --> 01:42:23.800
You mean you mean she still loves him.196001:42:24.520 --> 01:42:29.079
It's possible, but you don't really believe it, Carol, I196101:42:29.159 --> 01:42:32.319
don't know what to believe. I just know something's wrong.196201:42:33.079 --> 01:42:33.359
M h.196301:42:35.680 --> 01:42:38.359
I'm not hungry at Paul, me either.196401:42:39.039 --> 01:42:40.000
Let's go for a walk.196501:42:40.319 --> 01:42:47.520
Maybe we can figure something else. Country so peaceful and196601:42:48.119 --> 01:42:51.600
beautiful in the night. Yes, I wish you could enjoy it,196701:42:52.439 --> 01:42:55.039
but I can. Don't try to fool me. Your first196801:42:55.119 --> 01:42:57.279
vacation in years and you run into this.196901:42:58.279 --> 01:43:03.239
Well, we have to help her, but how we don't197001:43:03.239 --> 01:43:05.439
even know what's wrong. She not only won't tell, but197101:43:06.119 --> 01:43:08.159
you can't get near her long enough to talk. To her.197201:43:08.600 --> 01:43:11.319
Suppose Uncle Henry really did leave her, He may have197301:43:11.399 --> 01:43:12.960
gone off in a huff. That would account for the197401:43:13.039 --> 01:43:16.880
clothes being here perhaps, And suppose she still is in197501:43:16.960 --> 01:43:18.520
love with him, that wunt.197601:43:18.720 --> 01:43:20.520
But even if that's so, could that make her feel197701:43:20.560 --> 01:43:23.920
so badly? Make her act like this, not not talking,197801:43:24.119 --> 01:43:25.479
neglecting everything.197901:43:25.239 --> 01:43:27.479
Everything except his room and his flowers.198001:43:28.159 --> 01:43:28.600
I don't know.198101:43:29.359 --> 01:43:32.319
A woman's love is a strange thing. He left me.198201:43:32.479 --> 01:43:34.000
I don't know what I'd do.198301:43:35.439 --> 01:43:38.039
Well, if that is the case, the thing to do198401:43:38.239 --> 01:43:41.039
is to make her forget. No, I don't imagine it198501:43:41.039 --> 01:43:44.359
would be. But suppose suppose we take her to the198601:43:44.399 --> 01:43:47.239
city with us until she forgets well, we could ask198701:43:47.279 --> 01:43:51.199
her at least. Yeah, yeah, come on, let's go find her.198801:43:54.439 --> 01:43:56.279
I want Do you almost fower?198901:43:57.479 --> 01:44:00.239
I'm all right, let's Paul.199001:44:00.640 --> 01:44:00.760
Look?199101:44:00.760 --> 01:44:01.560
Could I tripped over?199201:44:02.439 --> 01:44:08.479
It's a mound of freshly dug earth. What's that for, Paul, Paul?199301:44:08.520 --> 01:44:14.199
It looks like a grave. Oh, don't be silly, it's199401:44:14.319 --> 01:44:14.520
just a.199501:44:16.560 --> 01:44:16.920
Forget it.199601:44:17.800 --> 01:44:24.520
Come on, let's find at Julie. Paul, forget it. See199701:44:25.560 --> 01:44:26.640
what's that building over there?199801:44:26.880 --> 01:44:29.119
That's a barn. There used to be a swallow cow.199901:44:29.279 --> 01:44:31.800
There with a bell around her neck, and chickens and200001:44:31.920 --> 01:44:33.239
ducks and all sorts of pets.200101:44:33.560 --> 01:44:34.680
This must have been a happy place.200201:44:34.880 --> 01:44:35.239
It was.200301:44:35.680 --> 01:44:40.720
But now, Paul standing by the barn that Julie. Come on,200401:44:40.840 --> 01:44:44.119
Let's ask her now. And Julie, what you doing following me?200501:44:45.000 --> 01:44:45.920
How could you?200601:44:47.680 --> 01:44:47.920
Well?200701:44:49.119 --> 01:44:55.399
It was a nuisance, Oh that Julie. Oh, a cat200801:44:56.760 --> 01:44:57.760
with its neck wrung.200901:45:02.159 --> 01:45:05.359
This was the first indication of Aunt Julie's ruthlessness. It201001:45:05.479 --> 01:45:08.880
seemed so unlike the Aunt Julie that I knew she201101:45:09.079 --> 01:45:12.800
was always kind. There was no mistaking the anger in201201:45:12.880 --> 01:45:14.960
her eyes as she stood there in the dim moonlight,201301:45:15.600 --> 01:45:18.880
a strangle of cat in her hands. She killed it,201401:45:19.000 --> 01:45:21.800
she said, because it was a nuisance. If she could201501:45:21.840 --> 01:45:26.560
do that, what else was she capable of doing. Paula201601:45:26.560 --> 01:45:28.640
and I went into the house. We went upstairs and201701:45:28.720 --> 01:45:30.920
put the finishing touches in our room and went to bed.201801:45:32.000 --> 01:45:33.000
I couldn't sleep.201901:45:33.359 --> 01:45:35.880
As I watched the moon make its slow, solitary way202001:45:35.920 --> 01:45:40.720
across the heaven. I kept thinking, Paula and I are202101:45:40.760 --> 01:45:45.279
also a nuisance. Paul and I are also a nuisance.202201:45:46.720 --> 01:45:49.319
Tart midnight, I became drowsy and was just beginning to202301:45:49.359 --> 01:45:52.359
fall off to sleep when I I heard footsteps in202401:45:52.439 --> 01:45:52.760
the hall.202501:45:55.199 --> 01:45:58.720
Pauw er uh, pau Paul?202601:45:58.760 --> 01:45:59.159
Wake up?202701:46:00.119 --> 01:46:00.279
Oh?202801:46:00.680 --> 01:46:01.079
What is that?202901:46:01.359 --> 01:46:01.640
Ship?203001:46:02.159 --> 01:46:03.319
I hear footsteps in the hole.203101:46:04.239 --> 01:46:07.760
First, I don't hear anything.203201:46:09.359 --> 01:46:10.439
There here it?203301:46:12.039 --> 01:46:12.279
Yeah?203401:46:14.920 --> 01:46:15.199
What? What?203501:46:15.319 --> 01:46:17.199
What would she be doing up this time of night?203601:46:17.359 --> 01:46:18.760
I don't know who else could it be?203701:46:19.840 --> 01:46:20.359
I'll go see.203801:46:20.520 --> 01:46:21.199
I'm coming with you.203901:46:23.199 --> 01:46:29.840
Quiet, don't put on the light. I can't see.204001:46:32.159 --> 01:46:33.319
Yes, no, I can.204101:46:35.399 --> 01:46:41.119
It is Aunt Julie. She's walking down the hall. I204201:46:41.199 --> 01:46:46.840
think she's coming this way. Quiet, sh I think she's204301:46:48.079 --> 01:46:49.439
what she got in her hand.204401:46:49.479 --> 01:46:50.520
Looks like a scissors.204501:46:51.039 --> 01:46:54.520
Scissors would she be doing with Carol?204601:46:54.600 --> 01:46:55.399
She's coming this way.204701:46:55.720 --> 01:46:59.399
Get back in bed quick, Get in bed, all right?204801:46:59.439 --> 01:47:00.359
Not ask her?204901:47:10.199 --> 01:47:18.479
H she went out? Yeah, she just looked in and left.205001:47:18.680 --> 01:47:20.840
Do you think she knew we were awake? I don't205101:47:20.840 --> 01:47:21.239
see how?205201:47:22.880 --> 01:47:28.159
All right? Where is my other slept up? There? Hi?205301:47:28.319 --> 01:47:34.720
Come on, she's going downstairs. Come on and be quiet.205401:47:36.319 --> 01:47:39.840
I think she's going outside. Not so fast, Give her205501:47:39.880 --> 01:47:40.880
a chance to get out.205601:47:42.279 --> 01:47:42.439
There.205701:47:42.520 --> 01:47:42.880
She's out.205801:47:43.239 --> 01:47:48.920
Come on, lak pa.205901:47:50.159 --> 01:47:52.079
She's cutting a bunch of roses off the bush.206001:47:52.640 --> 01:47:54.680
She's taking him around to the back of the house.206101:47:55.560 --> 01:47:55.880
Come on.206201:47:58.359 --> 01:48:03.760
Here, get down behind this portion. She's going over to206301:48:03.840 --> 01:48:07.680
that that mound and placing the roses.206401:48:07.399 --> 01:48:07.640
On it.206501:48:10.159 --> 01:48:10.760
The pullet.206601:48:11.479 --> 01:48:12.920
It looks like you're quiet, Carol.206701:48:13.960 --> 01:48:19.479
She's kneeling beside it. Now she's getting up, coming back,206801:48:20.279 --> 01:48:30.720
get done, She's gone.206901:48:32.560 --> 01:48:33.439
Do you know what that is?207001:48:34.800 --> 01:48:35.960
I got a pretty good idea.207101:48:36.560 --> 01:48:41.039
Uncle Harry's roses. He's grave.207201:48:43.479 --> 01:48:43.880
I said it.207301:48:45.199 --> 01:48:48.199
I said it without thinking. Of course, we had no207401:48:48.319 --> 01:48:51.640
way of knowing Go Henry was dead. We had no207501:48:51.760 --> 01:48:54.239
way of knowing that that was Uncle Henry's graver, that207601:48:54.319 --> 01:48:57.279
it was a grave at all. But at that moment,207701:48:57.840 --> 01:49:01.439
stooping behind the bush and the blackness of the he selted,207801:49:02.560 --> 01:49:06.399
not knowing why. Paul and I went back to our207901:49:06.479 --> 01:49:09.239
room as quickly and as silently as possible. Needless to say,208001:49:09.279 --> 01:49:12.359
we didn't sleep anymore. We just kept looking at each other,208101:49:12.720 --> 01:49:17.920
asking ourselves questions, trying to analyze our feelings. Soon we208201:49:17.960 --> 01:49:20.720
could see the streaks of dawn coming up over the treetops,208301:49:21.680 --> 01:49:24.960
and we slept the early morning hours trying to We're208401:49:25.000 --> 01:49:29.479
trying to convince each other that we thoughts were ridiculous. Frankly,208501:49:29.520 --> 01:49:32.840
I don't think we succeeded. Finally, we decided not to208601:49:32.960 --> 01:49:34.920
mention it, to go on with the cleaning the next day,208701:49:34.920 --> 01:49:37.119
as we'd planned to make believe nothing had happened until208801:49:37.119 --> 01:49:40.920
we had proof. That day we spent cleaning, and all208901:49:41.039 --> 01:49:44.359
day Aunt Julie was nowhere to be seen. Yet I209001:49:44.479 --> 01:49:49.399
had a strange feeling that something, someone was watching our209101:49:49.439 --> 01:49:53.359
every move. Toward evening, Paul and I sat down for209201:49:53.439 --> 01:49:56.039
a bite to eat more coffee.209301:49:56.800 --> 01:50:01.000
Ah, thanks, I wonder where Aunt Julie is. Yeah, I209401:50:01.079 --> 01:50:04.760
don't know, Carol. That's a strange aunt you've got.209501:50:05.039 --> 01:50:11.319
Yes, Oh, look the window. I saw someone looking in.209601:50:13.479 --> 01:50:15.880
There's no one there now, but I'm sure I saw209701:50:15.920 --> 01:50:19.760
probably just a shadow. Yes, I'll be just a shadow.209801:50:20.479 --> 01:50:21.479
You're on edge, Carol.209901:50:21.560 --> 01:50:24.720
I'll be all right. Finish your coffee. I'll start pinning210001:50:24.760 --> 01:50:28.479
the bathroom. Both work on the kitchen and take care210101:50:28.520 --> 01:50:29.359
of the downstairs.210201:50:29.960 --> 01:50:34.359
All right, Paul, you look worried. You know this a210301:50:34.359 --> 01:50:39.760
whole crazy business, but putting roses on it, I'm sorry, Carol,210401:50:41.399 --> 01:50:44.199
it's you. I'm really worried about it. If something should210501:50:44.199 --> 01:50:45.720
happen to you, I'll never forgive myself.210601:50:45.760 --> 01:50:48.640
Nothing will happen. I'll finish your coffee, I'll start seeing210701:50:48.680 --> 01:50:49.720
the bathroom.210801:50:50.479 --> 01:50:52.600
Okay, Carol, I won't be long.210901:50:53.920 --> 01:51:01.079
Hmm, Well, isn't too bad. There's to sink, Yeah, it's211001:51:01.159 --> 01:51:06.439
hot water. Yeah, that's it. Roish rag around a seapool.211101:51:07.880 --> 01:51:08.079
Yeah.211201:51:17.279 --> 01:51:25.159
Oh huh. There just the wind because I'm getting jumpy.211301:51:26.880 --> 01:51:27.239
Mmmm.211401:51:28.279 --> 01:51:31.399
This place won't be half bad when it's clean. The211501:51:31.479 --> 01:51:41.359
medicine chest, clean, the mirror and shelves. Oh, Paul, Paul,211601:51:42.880 --> 01:51:43.399
come here.211701:51:43.840 --> 01:51:46.000
What's the matter?211801:51:46.279 --> 01:51:48.039
Look you're in a medicine chest.211901:51:49.720 --> 01:51:50.920
What's a hypodermic needle.212001:51:51.000 --> 01:51:52.880
What would a hypodermic needle be doing here?212101:51:53.359 --> 01:51:54.760
It's not likely to be here for nothing.212201:51:55.000 --> 01:51:58.399
Look alongside of it a bottle of what's it saying?212301:51:59.399 --> 01:52:03.239
I can't read all the looking stuff? Opened the bottle212401:52:03.279 --> 01:52:11.800
all right, that cork's in tight there. Nauseating stuff like212501:52:11.880 --> 01:52:13.880
that would kill a person. Paul, it's not a joke.212601:52:14.199 --> 01:52:15.079
I'm sorry, Carol.212701:52:15.760 --> 01:52:17.119
Do you really think Aunt Julie?212801:52:18.439 --> 01:52:20.000
I don't know what can't be?212901:52:20.119 --> 01:52:21.079
A poet can't be?213001:52:21.359 --> 01:52:23.960
Maybe not, but we better find out and quickly. Carol,213101:52:23.960 --> 01:52:25.960
there's one more thing to do. I'm going to see213201:52:26.000 --> 01:52:28.479
if that's really Uncle Henry's grave I'm going to dig213301:52:28.520 --> 01:52:31.439
it up, don't you see I have to if it213401:52:31.520 --> 01:52:33.840
is we're in danger. Of course, I'm still not sure213501:52:33.880 --> 01:52:36.600
that falling vase was an accident. We have to find213601:52:36.640 --> 01:52:37.840
out about this business once.213701:52:37.720 --> 01:52:38.119
And for all.213801:52:38.279 --> 01:52:45.720
I'm coming with you. We walk the back house, and213901:52:45.840 --> 01:52:50.600
through my mind flash the succession of events, neglected house,214001:52:50.880 --> 01:52:54.640
Aunt Julie's consistence that we leave the roses, the grave,214101:52:54.720 --> 01:52:57.159
the insurance policy, and now the hypodermic needle. Are that214201:52:57.279 --> 01:53:02.319
infernal loyal? All the evidence to but one conclusion. I214301:53:02.399 --> 01:53:06.479
couldn't believe it, And yet there it was motive and method,214401:53:07.479 --> 01:53:09.520
and now we were going outside to dig up the214501:53:09.640 --> 01:53:10.920
last remaining evidence.214601:53:12.880 --> 01:53:16.680
Well, this is it, Cal sure you want to watch?214701:53:17.000 --> 01:53:18.319
I won't stay in his house alone.214801:53:19.279 --> 01:53:20.760
Look at the beautiful roses.214901:53:20.479 --> 01:53:22.399
Around the Hurry up, Paul, let's get it over with.215001:53:22.680 --> 01:53:29.319
Okay, here goes. I thought I'd turn into a grave digger.215101:53:31.520 --> 01:53:34.560
His start isn't packed tight easy to dig.215201:53:37.760 --> 01:53:38.560
It's getting dark.215301:53:39.600 --> 01:53:43.279
Yeah, well, I think I'll run in and get a lantern.215401:53:43.760 --> 01:53:44.640
I'll be right back now.215501:53:44.920 --> 01:53:49.560
All right, every one of those lengthening shadows looked like215601:53:49.640 --> 01:53:54.600
a ghost gets dark quickly in the country. I was afraid,215701:53:54.680 --> 01:53:56.359
but I knew Paul would be back in a minute.215801:53:57.479 --> 01:54:03.239
I picked up the shovel and began to dig. Ah yah,215901:54:04.279 --> 01:54:11.039
that's better, that's a nervous I'm working. H got you216001:54:11.119 --> 01:54:18.920
behind me, Paul, Bring the ladder closer. Hips so dark, Paul, Paul.216101:54:21.000 --> 01:54:23.720
What are you doing? What are you doing? What are216201:54:23.760 --> 01:54:24.479
you doing to my grave?216301:54:24.920 --> 01:54:25.439
Put it back?216401:54:25.840 --> 01:54:29.680
Put it back. My flowers, my beautiful flowers, my lovely roses.216501:54:29.720 --> 01:54:31.479
You've hurt them, You've hurt my roses.216601:54:31.520 --> 01:54:32.159
And I won't let you.216701:54:32.439 --> 01:54:32.840
I won't.216801:54:33.199 --> 01:54:33.720
I won't wait.216901:54:35.159 --> 01:54:37.640
Let you break my roses, street delicate roses.217001:54:37.800 --> 01:54:38.800
Take your hand the way.217101:54:40.800 --> 01:54:47.079
You'll kill them, had the way?217201:54:51.640 --> 01:54:53.800
Oh, oh, forgive me, Henry.217301:54:55.720 --> 01:54:56.359
Are you all right?217401:54:56.479 --> 01:54:59.880
Carol? Oh what happened?217501:55:03.439 --> 01:55:07.560
And Julie saved my life? And we thought she Oh,217601:55:07.600 --> 01:55:11.119
can you ever forget his Julie, you didn't know, You217701:55:11.199 --> 01:55:15.640
didn't know. No, No, he wasn't. I don't understand. He217801:55:15.760 --> 01:55:16.920
was living in his room all.217901:55:16.840 --> 01:55:17.680
The time, Carol.218001:55:18.520 --> 01:55:21.920
I was taking care of him. When you two insisted218101:55:22.000 --> 01:55:24.239
on staying here, I kept him out of sight.218201:55:25.119 --> 01:55:25.279
Oh.218301:55:25.359 --> 01:55:27.840
I didn't want to kill him, and I had to.218401:55:28.640 --> 01:55:31.600
He would have killed Carol. Oh if you only had218501:55:31.760 --> 01:55:35.840
left when I asked you to. But perhaps it's better218601:55:35.920 --> 01:55:39.439
this way. He never got that violent before. I could218701:55:39.479 --> 01:55:42.039
always take care of him. The hypodermic need and.218801:55:42.039 --> 01:55:44.000
The stave calmed him when he got a little while.218901:55:44.039 --> 01:55:47.079
But then then when I saw him strangle a cat,219001:55:47.119 --> 01:55:47.640
I knew he was.219101:55:47.640 --> 01:55:49.039
Getting completely out of hand.219201:55:50.279 --> 01:55:52.000
Yes, it's better this way.219301:55:52.800 --> 01:55:56.279
He's better off dead, poor grave.219401:55:56.399 --> 01:56:01.319
And the roses were a whim of his Williams.219501:56:02.880 --> 01:56:05.920
And look he fell right in his own grain.219601:56:15.560 --> 01:56:27.680
And so closes the story Uncle Henry's Rosebush, starring Agnes219701:56:27.760 --> 01:56:29.800
Moorehead Ellen Drew and Ted Reid.219801:56:30.159 --> 01:56:32.640
To Night's tale of Suspense.219901:56:33.760 --> 01:56:35.520
This is your narrator, the Man in Black.220001:56:36.680 --> 01:56:40.159
The producer of these broadcast is William Spear, with Ted Bliss,220101:56:40.199 --> 01:56:43.960
the director Bernard Hermann and Lucian Mahowick. Conductor and composer220201:56:44.520 --> 01:56:48.920
Larry Roman, the author, collaborated on Tonight's Suspense.220301:57:02.439 --> 01:57:06.800
This is CBS in Columbia Broadcasting System.220401:57:16.159 --> 01:57:23.880
Hmmm, mystery. It's a phrase we use often for fun,220501:57:25.199 --> 01:57:30.640
for a little thrill, a little excitement. But mystery is220601:57:30.720 --> 01:57:36.439
not always our friend. Much as we've discussed the dichotomy220701:57:37.039 --> 01:57:43.319
and complexity of so much. Some things are simply unknown220801:57:43.479 --> 01:57:51.319
to us entirely, at least for a while. So I220901:57:51.439 --> 01:57:56.960
suppose it's time you learn about the wholaw.221001:58:04.199 --> 01:58:05.159
Out of the past.221101:58:05.560 --> 01:58:08.319
Pat comes of the world of gone by speak again.221201:58:08.479 --> 01:58:11.279
Their remort hotel, the Halla.221301:58:21.119 --> 01:58:25.520
It was a dark house, dreary too. Shadows crept down221401:58:25.560 --> 01:58:29.640
the walls like loathsome bourman. The house was old and221501:58:29.760 --> 01:58:32.640
filled with memories of better days, Like the man who221601:58:32.720 --> 01:58:37.720
lived there. He was old and gnarled and alone. He221701:58:37.840 --> 01:58:39.920
passed the lonely hours by sitting on the porch of221801:58:40.000 --> 01:58:42.439
his home, watching the boat sail up and down the river.221901:58:43.319 --> 01:58:47.039
He was happy living alone in that old house until.222001:58:46.880 --> 01:58:49.760
One day a tall, three rigged Brazilian schooner.222101:58:49.520 --> 01:58:53.600
Floated past his shores, casting a shadow on the banks222201:58:53.640 --> 01:58:56.800
of the river, a shadow over the old house, a222301:58:56.880 --> 01:59:00.560
shadow over the old man, a living shadow which crept222401:59:00.600 --> 01:59:04.119
into his mind. He wrote a letter to his young cousin,222501:59:04.760 --> 01:59:07.520
Madame renee Sable, who was living in.222601:59:07.600 --> 01:59:09.279
Paris, begging her to visit him.222701:59:10.800 --> 01:59:13.439
She read the letter over several times and took it222801:59:13.560 --> 01:59:18.039
to a friend of hers, a doctor, doctor Perell, to222901:59:18.159 --> 01:59:18.920
ask his advice.223001:59:20.000 --> 01:59:23.760
She was young and in Peris and she didn't believe223101:59:23.880 --> 01:59:25.359
in the old rand show.223201:59:28.479 --> 01:59:30.760
How you come to your doctor, Perrell because this letter223301:59:30.840 --> 01:59:33.960
worries me. So you've known my cousin, Gabrielle Bouvet for223401:59:34.039 --> 01:59:35.880
a long time, and he's not the sort of man223501:59:36.000 --> 01:59:37.159
given to hallucinations.223601:59:37.319 --> 01:59:39.640
It seems to be a very silent old man. But223701:59:40.079 --> 01:59:42.039
living alone the way, the nonsense.223801:59:42.119 --> 01:59:43.279
Living alone has nothing.223901:59:43.079 --> 01:59:43.560
To do with it.224001:59:43.720 --> 01:59:45.600
But suppose you read me the letter, Madamsell.224101:59:45.840 --> 01:59:49.760
Of course it all seems like so much poppy cock. Listen,224201:59:50.960 --> 01:59:53.720
be honored by a visit from you at your earliest convenience.224301:59:54.960 --> 01:59:55.920
Didn't that like him?224401:59:56.079 --> 01:59:56.840
Yes, very much.224501:59:57.760 --> 01:59:58.439
You'll find me a.224601:59:58.520 --> 02:00:02.800
Changed man, my dear changed because he has come. You224702:00:02.920 --> 02:00:06.680
don't know what I'm talking about, and so I must explain.224802:00:07.560 --> 02:00:10.840
A shadows crept into my home, a shadow which dominates me.224902:00:11.960 --> 02:00:13.600
You see what I mean, Doctor.225002:00:13.439 --> 02:00:15.079
Well Redon Remee right.225102:00:15.840 --> 02:00:17.960
He is a creature from a land of shadows. But225202:00:18.039 --> 02:00:20.640
I tell you he does live. He lives here with me,225302:00:20.720 --> 02:00:23.840
and I'm afraid of him. Oh renee. He will dominate225402:00:23.960 --> 02:00:28.439
all of mankind, just as mankind has dominated the animal kingdom.225502:00:29.119 --> 02:00:32.600
We will become his chattel, his food, and his slave.225602:00:33.239 --> 02:00:36.119
As the animals become ours, you see.225702:00:36.039 --> 02:00:37.479
Doctor, Yes, and did I do?225802:00:37.720 --> 02:00:40.720
I wonder, Renee, how soon can you pack and be225902:00:40.800 --> 02:00:41.319
ready to live?226002:00:41.399 --> 02:00:42.199
In about two hours?226102:00:42.279 --> 02:00:42.720
We'll fine.226202:00:42.720 --> 02:00:44.920
I'll have the hoss and buggy hitched and coffee. Then226302:00:45.600 --> 02:00:47.279
I think we'd better go down to him as soon226402:00:47.319 --> 02:00:47.960
as possible.226502:00:48.239 --> 02:00:51.319
Doctor, surely you don't believe in this, this invisible creature.226602:00:51.920 --> 02:00:54.199
Surely, Renee, I don't doubt the wind just because I226702:00:54.279 --> 02:00:56.880
can't see it. We'll be able to judge better after226802:00:56.920 --> 02:00:57.880
we have a talk with him.226902:00:58.279 --> 02:01:00.079
You better hurry home. I'm going right.227002:01:07.840 --> 02:01:08.560
For a long trip.227102:01:08.640 --> 02:01:08.960
Doctor.227202:01:09.039 --> 02:01:11.159
I hope we don't frighten my cousin by coming.227302:01:11.000 --> 02:01:11.520
At this hour.227402:01:12.199 --> 02:01:15.039
That's their house right over there, Yes, throughout the end.227502:01:14.960 --> 02:01:17.439
Of the road. Huh, only looking old place.227602:01:17.439 --> 02:01:20.520
It's very gloomy. It's so dark and so very old.227702:01:21.000 --> 02:01:23.319
Tell me how long has Bugai's wife has been dead?227802:01:23.399 --> 02:01:24.399
For about six years?227902:01:24.479 --> 02:01:27.279
Now? Did you notice any perceptible change in emantasy?228002:01:27.359 --> 02:01:31.680
Do nothing? Except, you know, except he became quieter and228102:01:31.840 --> 02:01:34.039
drew into himself more. If that impossible?228202:01:34.840 --> 02:01:35.680
That here we are?228302:01:36.359 --> 02:01:36.560
Oh?228402:01:37.479 --> 02:01:44.920
Oh, and so the doctor and the old man's cousin,228502:01:45.159 --> 02:01:49.199
Renee's son entered the old house, expecting to find a228602:01:49.319 --> 02:01:52.520
man weakened by illness, haggard with lack of sleep, but228702:01:52.720 --> 02:01:56.600
instead Gabriel Boubat was in high spirits as he conducted228802:01:56.640 --> 02:01:59.439
his guests into the house. He made a special part228902:01:59.520 --> 02:02:02.720
of tea, and then as he passed the cree of sugar.229002:02:04.319 --> 02:02:10.560
You, dearnee's not being so nervous, pitch fidget who he's worth? Fidgety, youngster,229102:02:11.439 --> 02:02:12.159
it's me nervous.229202:02:12.600 --> 02:02:15.880
You are talking about the Brazilian boat missable by What229302:02:16.000 --> 02:02:17.800
has the boat to do with this unknown shadow?229402:02:19.039 --> 02:02:22.600
We don't know? Then, frankly, no hell.229502:02:23.960 --> 02:02:24.159
Here?229602:02:25.359 --> 02:02:28.960
Look at this book, well, study of the scientific word.229702:02:29.880 --> 02:02:30.279
Open it.229802:02:31.600 --> 02:02:33.000
My eyes aren't as good as it used to be.229902:02:33.039 --> 02:02:35.479
Here I dreaded to you myself paid seventy two.230002:02:35.840 --> 02:02:37.960
What a fit to do with a shadow which you see?230102:02:38.560 --> 02:02:41.159
But are your friend a doctor to read the second character? Mm?230202:02:43.000 --> 02:02:47.399
Well listen to this one. They South Polo, Brazil. A230302:02:47.560 --> 02:02:52.079
contagious madness has spread throughout South Polo. The victims claim230402:02:52.119 --> 02:02:55.520
they are being possessed by creatures of darkness who feed230502:02:55.600 --> 02:02:58.840
only on milk and water. Medical savants have been rushed230602:02:58.880 --> 02:03:01.039
to their eve in Brazil.230702:03:00.840 --> 02:03:04.079
C I know, I know that the Brazilian boat saved230802:03:04.119 --> 02:03:09.239
by my door. It's possible for this and every dish230902:03:10.319 --> 02:03:11.680
I have escaped from the boat.231002:03:12.439 --> 02:03:15.479
Anything's possible. But this does seem a little improbable.231102:03:15.600 --> 02:03:18.800
But possession, that's talking of demon This is the modern world.231202:03:19.279 --> 02:03:21.680
No one man can possess the power of ordering.231302:03:21.479 --> 02:03:23.720
Another's will a little.231402:03:23.840 --> 02:03:24.159
You know.231502:03:25.359 --> 02:03:26.800
Perhaps I am a fool of a girl.231602:03:26.840 --> 02:03:30.039
But anybody, no, not anybody, Rene, not me, for instance,231702:03:30.079 --> 02:03:32.600
I believe in hypnotics. That's possession of a kind.231802:03:32.760 --> 02:03:36.000
Doctor Mesmer's nonsense. I don't believe in mesmerism.231902:03:36.119 --> 02:03:37.600
Well, I can prove it to your Cynthia enough.232002:03:38.319 --> 02:03:41.159
If you're willing, we'll try a little experiment you hypnotize.232102:03:41.600 --> 02:03:43.600
If you will be a subject, why of course I will.232202:03:43.640 --> 02:03:44.479
That sounds like fun.232302:03:44.640 --> 02:03:46.279
Can I have been any adopt? Yes?232402:03:46.479 --> 02:03:48.439
Just blow out the candle all but once.232502:03:48.840 --> 02:03:51.800
Certainly I leave the coronic candle.232602:03:51.600 --> 02:03:55.279
On all right now, Renee, if you'll close your eyes,232702:03:55.760 --> 02:04:02.039
my eyes are closed, and try to sleep. Sleep, Eh,232802:04:03.000 --> 02:04:07.960
candles are out all but one. Now, sleep, my dear,232902:04:08.600 --> 02:04:17.479
try to sleep. Doctor listen, listen to that what what lisson?233002:04:18.239 --> 02:04:21.800
It's in the room. I know it is it's here233102:04:22.560 --> 02:04:25.840
thanks to me watching me. Can't you hear it? Crying? Crying,233202:04:25.920 --> 02:04:28.760
it's maden it you don't believe me? Do you stop233302:04:28.760 --> 02:04:30.920
the experiment at once? Huh?233402:04:32.199 --> 02:04:34.840
Listen, Christmas happen?233502:04:34.960 --> 02:04:37.600
Please? What makes you think mankind is the final answer233602:04:37.640 --> 02:04:40.680
to life? Perhaps there is a higher form of life,233702:04:41.880 --> 02:04:43.920
form of life which can possess us and that destroy us.233802:04:45.000 --> 02:04:46.079
Isn't that possible? Doctor?233902:04:46.199 --> 02:04:47.880
Well, yes, anything is possible.234002:04:48.199 --> 02:04:50.960
Can take my word for it. Humanity is lost unless234102:04:50.960 --> 02:04:55.159
we destroy it. Look, I always carry a knife with me,234202:04:55.199 --> 02:05:00.199
waiting for the time I can destroy him. Listen, it's234302:05:00.239 --> 02:05:03.399
come for me, Come for possession of me. HiT's come.234402:05:04.199 --> 02:05:05.600
It's the horror, the.234502:05:05.680 --> 02:05:13.520
Horror, it's doctor.234602:05:13.680 --> 02:05:16.119
Won't he ever wake up? He's been unconscious for over234702:05:16.199 --> 02:05:16.560
an hour.234802:05:16.760 --> 02:05:18.800
Well, it's best to let him sleep right now, My dear,234902:05:19.159 --> 02:05:21.479
this is an exhausting emotional strain for a man of235002:05:21.520 --> 02:05:21.960
his years.235102:05:22.000 --> 02:05:22.760
What can we do?235202:05:23.159 --> 02:05:25.439
As soon as this heartbeat is normal, I'll take him235302:05:25.439 --> 02:05:27.479
back to the Palace hospital. You will have to stay235402:05:27.520 --> 02:05:29.760
here for a few days and close the house. Just235502:05:29.960 --> 02:05:31.920
pack his belongings and bring them on to Paris as235602:05:31.960 --> 02:05:32.479
soon as you can.235702:05:32.600 --> 02:05:34.680
Anything you say, doctor, power well, come.235802:05:34.560 --> 02:05:35.840
Renee, we must let him sleep.235902:05:36.119 --> 02:05:38.399
I'll prepare the coach for the return journey.236002:05:42.520 --> 02:05:45.520
And so they left him lying on the old bed236102:05:45.600 --> 02:05:48.680
in his room, and the shadows on the walls cast236202:05:48.760 --> 02:05:50.119
purple shadows.236302:05:49.720 --> 02:05:52.039
On his gnarled hands, and the hands.236402:05:51.800 --> 02:05:54.000
Clutched the air and flashed the sheets, as if the236502:05:54.039 --> 02:05:57.159
old man were fighting, fighting a being, fighting a presence,236602:05:57.199 --> 02:05:59.920
fighting for possession of his own will. The old man236702:06:00.079 --> 02:06:04.079
his face was a mask of horror. And then the wind,236802:06:04.720 --> 02:06:08.359
that strange, unholy wind, it's about to do sneak in236902:06:08.399 --> 02:06:11.920
the room. It oo's through the door, the keyholes and237002:06:12.000 --> 02:06:14.399
the window. It slid to the bedside.237102:06:21.680 --> 02:06:25.359
No, no, yeare possessed. Possessed.237202:06:25.479 --> 02:06:28.359
And I know you watch me night and day, night237302:06:28.520 --> 02:06:30.439
and day, night and day.237402:06:30.560 --> 02:06:32.760
Well, get away with me. I've gotta get away with me.237502:06:33.560 --> 02:06:34.880
He don't give in without a struggle.237602:06:35.039 --> 02:06:39.079
You'll have to give in because nobody believes you, believes you,237702:06:39.279 --> 02:06:44.760
believes you alone, give me alone, watching you, watching you, watching,237802:06:46.239 --> 02:06:47.600
Never leave you well.237902:06:47.920 --> 02:06:51.920
Never never, never shall be free of you. You can't238002:06:52.000 --> 02:06:52.880
be free of me.238102:06:53.079 --> 02:06:54.000
I'm part of you.238202:06:54.359 --> 02:06:57.960
If I stay here, they'll call you mad. They'll call238302:06:58.079 --> 02:07:01.000
you mad. What if I leave the house, you'll die.238402:07:02.399 --> 02:07:05.199
I'll leave. You're here, you can't follow me. He'll go238502:07:05.279 --> 02:07:07.439
far away, so far nobody will find me.238602:07:08.239 --> 02:07:11.560
I've got one hand on your heart to play, and238702:07:11.960 --> 02:07:15.560
one in the room. If you'll leave your heart, you238802:07:15.600 --> 02:07:19.319
will be torn from you, torn from your body, time238902:07:19.439 --> 02:07:20.279
from yourself?239002:07:27.039 --> 02:07:27.680
Is anything the matter?239102:07:27.800 --> 02:07:29.600
Hired him screen too good to look at me.239202:07:29.880 --> 02:07:31.399
His face is dead white.239302:07:31.520 --> 02:07:33.960
Yes, you're quite right. I'll have to risk moving him now.239402:07:34.199 --> 02:07:35.359
I don't think we ought to leave him in this239502:07:35.439 --> 02:07:36.079
house any longer.239602:07:36.159 --> 02:07:37.520
How can you travel alone with him?239702:07:37.520 --> 02:07:39.640
Well, I'll mat it somehow. Carry him to the buggy.239802:07:40.000 --> 02:07:42.439
He can sleep as we drive along. I can manage somehow,239902:07:42.920 --> 02:07:44.880
that is, if you don't mind staying here alone.240002:07:44.960 --> 02:07:47.239
I don't mind, doctor, I have no patience with superstitious240102:07:47.239 --> 02:07:47.920
non here.240202:07:48.319 --> 02:07:51.960
Help me recommend this blanket, good doctor, that's fine. Now240302:07:52.039 --> 02:07:53.359
hand me that other blanket over there.240402:07:53.880 --> 02:07:54.039
Here.240502:07:54.079 --> 02:07:56.560
You are to keep him warm on the journey. I'll240602:07:56.640 --> 02:07:58.920
send the coats back from Paris tomorrow evening to pick240702:07:58.960 --> 02:07:59.239
you up.240802:07:59.520 --> 02:08:00.880
You ought to be to leave here by then.240902:08:00.960 --> 02:08:02.359
Don't worry about me, doctor Perron.241002:08:02.479 --> 02:08:07.600
I'll be all right, That's what she thought then. But241102:08:07.800 --> 02:08:10.000
even as the doctor carried the old man out of241202:08:10.039 --> 02:08:13.560
the house to the carriage. Premonition of fear, a foreboding241302:08:13.960 --> 02:08:16.279
reached out from the gathering shadows on the walls and241402:08:16.399 --> 02:08:20.039
left her trembling and weak. The doctor placed the old241502:08:20.079 --> 02:08:23.479
man in the carriage, and then that journey and the241602:08:23.560 --> 02:08:27.279
return to Paris started. They had traveled for about an hour,241702:08:29.600 --> 02:08:31.000
for they awakened sobbing out.241802:08:32.439 --> 02:08:35.560
You've taken me away away from my house, you fool. Okay,241902:08:35.640 --> 02:08:37.840
you must not excite yourselfut his hands and my heart242002:08:37.880 --> 02:08:38.479
he's pulling on it.242102:08:38.640 --> 02:08:38.800
Poor.242202:08:39.560 --> 02:08:40.840
Have to take me back before I die.242302:08:41.840 --> 02:08:42.760
You must get away from that.242402:08:43.000 --> 02:08:45.479
Take me back, Take me back, doctor. You don't understand.242502:08:46.159 --> 02:08:47.239
Do you think I'm at doctor?242602:08:47.760 --> 02:08:48.840
But the hall exists?242702:08:49.439 --> 02:08:50.000
They exist?242802:08:50.199 --> 02:08:51.479
Now die, I don't get done.242902:08:51.520 --> 02:08:54.159
Will you try to restless there? We're doing everything we can.243002:08:54.319 --> 02:08:57.000
Turn his carriage around, doctor, from the end of the hallway.243102:08:57.119 --> 02:08:57.760
Way to die.243202:08:58.159 --> 02:08:59.960
Let go of the raise, you fool, before you take243302:09:00.079 --> 02:09:03.359
prop a roll in the character roll myself findless knife243402:09:03.439 --> 02:09:04.199
and the old way?243502:09:04.359 --> 02:09:08.279
What that knife? Found? What don teach you to want243602:09:08.319 --> 02:09:16.800
to fill a hall of doctor? Meat? You well get243702:09:16.840 --> 02:09:19.960
out of this carriage stuff before I plunge the dagger243802:09:20.000 --> 02:09:23.560
into your heart. Poofay, you can't leave me here like this.243902:09:23.920 --> 02:09:26.560
I must gave your hair how much? Return to the house.244002:09:26.600 --> 02:09:29.960
It wants to destroy him, but he doesn't exist. Accepting244102:09:30.000 --> 02:09:33.359

the badly wounded doctor lying on the roadside more dead244702:10:39.199 --> 02:10:42.880
than a lion. Bouvey drove curiously through the night to244802:10:43.000 --> 02:10:44.960
a little shack about a half mile from his home.244902:10:45.399 --> 02:10:47.880
There was a sign on the shack, a sign reading245002:10:48.720 --> 02:10:53.439
lit towels, expert, blockmakers and iron workers. Bubet pulled the245102:10:53.479 --> 02:10:56.840
carriage off in front of the door, walked to the245202:10:56.960 --> 02:10:57.439
entrance of the.245302:10:57.439 --> 02:11:02.720
Shank tow.245402:11:07.159 --> 02:11:11.119

man like you if you make a lot for me.245902:11:24.920 --> 02:11:26.600
I've got to lock the doors in my house security,246002:11:27.279 --> 02:11:29.479
the front and back doors, and the windows, all the246102:11:29.520 --> 02:11:32.239
windows in my house. You must be locked and bolted246202:11:32.279 --> 02:11:35.159

But hurry to hurry. He's waiting for me.247002:11:53.239 --> 02:11:56.680
Now you seal the towel.247102:11:56.680 --> 02:11:58.720
And the old man returned to the lonely old house247202:11:58.800 --> 02:12:00.800
by the river and the death of the night. They247302:12:00.880 --> 02:12:03.359
crept into the house who worked in the half darkness247402:12:03.520 --> 02:12:07.880
near the shadows, and that strange, unholy wind was quiet247502:12:08.399 --> 02:12:11.680
and didn't disturb them while they worked well. They felt247602:12:11.720 --> 02:12:15.439

And the old man muttered, right, alright, hurry almost morning, man,248002:12:31.239 --> 02:12:34.000
I'm hearing as pass as I can. I'm almost done,248102:12:34.039 --> 02:12:36.319
except for the windows in your cousin's room. Don't worry248202:12:36.319 --> 02:12:38.600

And there's a honor with the dead.264302:21:17.440 --> 02:21:19.799
And the old wild eyed man rushed into the pile264402:21:19.840 --> 02:21:22.319
of burning timber among his old belongings.264502:21:21.879 --> 02:21:25.479

scorched bones and two odd misshapen skulls.264802:21:36.879 --> 02:21:44.319
Two odd misshapen skulls. Remember that, for there were two skulls,264902:21:45.680 --> 02:22:01.719
not one from the time one that we have heard265002:22:01.799 --> 02:22:05.000
