Candy Haul | A Goblin’s Halloween Horror Story
Candy Haul by Tyler Belmont turns trick-or-treating into a goblin Halloween horror story. Twelve-year-old Daniel wants the biggest candy haul in the neighborhood, and his new friend Ivan has the most convincing costume he has ever seen. But when Ivan steals his candy wagon and disappears into the woods, Daniel follows—and the path home vanishes. Now a grinning trickster is setting the rules, and his appetite goes far beyond sweets. Can Daniel survive the games and find his way out? Narrated by Henrique Couto, this tale of childhood Halloween nostalgia turns vicious for fans of scary Halloween stories.

The games have begun, and candy isn't the only thing on the menu. Trick or treat. There's a chill in the air. Must be fall. Join me for a tale of Halloween.

Remember when the biggest problem on Halloween was how much candy you could realistically carry? One bucket, one pillowcase, it was never enough. Daniel brings a wagon. He's 12, he's dressed as a wizard, and he has a neighborhood candy contest... He's dead set on winning.
29 Then he meets Ivan. Pointed ears, yellow eyes, sharp little teeth, a fantastic costume. So convincing. And Ivan would love to tag along. And that is the trouble with Halloween, isn't it? Every other night, you'd run from something like that. But not tonight. Candy Hall by Tyler Belmont Halloween is a very special day for me. When I was a child, it was a true staple of magic and whimsy. A day when all the weirdos and monsters could come out to play. Everyone dressed up as whatever they wanted and was given candy. As the one kid who was frequently ridiculed for being different, I took great joy in the festive holiday. When I was 12 years old, our neighborhood had a big event planned. The one who scored the most candy would be given a grand prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to Disneyland. This was an offer one simply doesn't refuse at that age. Upon seeing this announcement, I knew I had to win that trip. For that year, I had decided to go out as a wizard of my own design I called myself Griffin Lightbeard. He was
02 based on my D & D character at the time. I wore a red cloak, a long fake beard, and a pointed hat. After saying goodbye to my mom, who warned me not to stay out too late, I was off on my own. My parents were busy that particular year, which was why I went along by myself. Truthfully, I didn't mind. I was really excited to be on my own trick-or-treating for the first time. I was hell-bent on winning this event and getting the absolute most candy. I started going through as many houses as I could. I had brought a backpack and a red wagon along with me.
46 It would have been nice to have a bike to use, but that would have meant I had less loot to carry. I lived in a vast cul-de-sac, so There would be no shortage of houses to check. At the time, this was one of the most fun nights I had ever had as a kid, but it was also one of the most frightening as well. I didn't believe in the supernatural as a kid. I loved the idea of ghosts, demons, monsters, and all that, but even as a child, I just intuitively knew that it was all make-believe. At least that was what I believed at the time. I was pulling my wagon down a steep hill and trying very carefully to not lose my grip on it and risk losing everything I had collected up to that point. Rather than directly pull it down, I shifted its direction to be in front of me instead of behind. That way I would be lowering it down and I could keep a better hold of it. As I was walking down, I noticed a small figure standing up ahead at the bottom.
57 It was staring up at me with a devilish grin. It had pointy ears, sharp teeth, and big yellow eyes. It was dressed in a ragged jester costume. I was honestly kind of impressed with the look of it. When I finally reached the bottom, I approached them and told them how much I liked their outfit and that it looked very realistic. They were very excited. Thank you, thank you, wizard man. I love to play jester. I told them I was actually referring to their goblin costume. This threw them off for a moment as they stared back at me, frozen as if they were lost in thought and uncertain what to say next. Yes, yes, my goblin costume is so real it makes me want a hot meal, they exclaimed excitedly. I asked them what costume store they got it from, and they told me it was actually homemade.
01 At the time, I had guessed that their parents must have been makeup and costume designers or something like Tom Savini or Rick Baker. I asked them how much candy they had managed to scoop up. So much candy! Enough for a lifetime! I asked them if they were partaking in the contest to go to Disneyland, and they said, Contest! Contest! So many prizes to be had! Run! Run! Or you'll be mad! He kept jumping up and down like crazy. I didn't really know what to make of this kid. He did seem to be alone, just like me. I told him my name was Daniel and asked what his name was. He stood there and thought for a second, then blurted out, Ivan! So I asked Ivan if He wanted to join me on my quest to get the most candy in the neighborhood. A request for a pilgrimage?
00 What fun! Great, I said, and Ivan accompanied me to the next house. We were honestly making great progress. With all the candy we had stacked up in the wagon, it looked like a mini-mountain. As we reached the halfway mark through the neighborhood, things took a turn. Ivan was still chipper until he spotted a squirrel. He shrieked, Oh boy, fresh meat for me! He dashed after the squirrel, and I stood there confused about what he meant until he caught the squirrel and bit its head off. I was in complete shock. Like, did I really just witness that? My mouth dropped as I just stared at what I believed to be a weird kid chowing down on this squirrel like it was beef jerky. He threw the rest of the squirrel away and ran. back over to me with blood all around his mouth. That was a nice snack. Now let's get back on track. Right, I said nervously. I couldn't believe my eyes. Did I really just watch that? I wanted to shrug it off, but how could I? As we continued walking down the street, Ivan stopped and turned to face me. The race is on! He leaped and jumped
32 all around, but now he was leaping almost six feet into the air. I was starting to get scared and knew that I needed to get away from this kid, whatever it actually was. Daniel, Daniel, it's time for a test. A test? I asked. What was he talking about? Pass my test and you can have all my candy. I still wasn't really following, so I asked what kind of test he had in mind. He leaped onto the wagon and took the handle. Into the woods! Find me!
12 Attack! Flee! The choice is yours. Suddenly, he rode off with the wagon into the woods. I shouted for him to come back and followed him into the forest. To this day, I don't understand why I did this. It was obviously a bad move. I should have just said, screw it, forget the contest. But my desire to go to Disneyland greatly outweighed my fear of Ivan. So I followed him into the woods. I was surrounded by lots of dead leaves and trees. The sun was still setting, so it was nearly nighttime. The stars started to reveal themselves in the sky more clearly as I saw the full moon.
05 I yelled out to Ivan, but got no response. I didn't know what to do. Just as I was about to turn around, I found that the way I had come had vanished. I know it sounds absurd, but so was chasing after a goblin stealing a wagon full of candy. I yelled out again to Ivan. First test, answer my riddle. Guess right, you go to the second test. Fail, I eat you. Yummy, yummy. My anxiety heightened at this point as I just wanted to go home. What is big and red and only comes once a year?
05 Answer. Time is ticking. I started to think and frantically ran through every possibility I could think of in my head. Until, tick-tock, time is up. Santa! I shouted. Silence. I stood there, waiting for a reply. Yes, yes, Santa. Big hairy wizard comes once a year. What fun! I breathed a sigh of relief. Next test. Show no fear, for I am near. Turning in every general direction, I saw no sign of Ivan anywhere until I turned back to find myself face to face with the pesky trickster.
00 Boo! I screamed and fell to the ground in shock and tried to catch my breath. Ivan just stared down at me with that Uncomfortable grin, leaning back and forth. Oh no, you failed, you failed, what to do, what to do? Please, I begged him, no more, I just want to go home. Home, no time for home, one more test awaits. I'm confused, I thought failing the test meant you were going to eat me. No, no, that was for the last test.
45 I will not devour you if you lose the second test. Then what on earth was he going to do instead? I could only imagine it being far worse than eating me alive, so what now? I eat your share. He took a big gulp out of the pile of candy on the wagon. He chomped down on it as if it were his first meal in weeks. Yummy in the tummy. At this point, I wasn't even mad. I just wanted to go home and forget all about the contest. One more test. One more test. Did I even have a choice at this point? I spoke up and asked what the final test was. Find the exit.
37 Go home. Be free. What happens if I can't find the exit? I asked. Trapped forever. My new best friend. I screamed in panic and frustration. I said, I hate this. I don't want this. I want to go home. This isn't fun anymore. Party pooper. Find the magic door or be trapped forever. Yay! What did he mean by magic door? Before I could even ask, he hopped on top of a tree branch. The test starts now. Run, run. Not much time left. He leaped off the tree branch and faded into the shadows. Wasting no time, I started running and looking in every direction for a door of any kind to escape through. I quickly realized I was just running around in circles. and knew there was no way in hell Ivan was ever going to let me leave.
43 What could I do? All I had on me was a backpack full of candy. I started to get an idea. What if I could use my candy to somehow get Ivan to show me the way out? I shouted out to him, and sure enough he appeared on a tree branch and lay there like he was the Cheshire Cat. Time is ticking, friend. What do you want? I asked him what he wanted, and he had a very confused look on his face. Want? Ivan wants Daniel to stay forever. Maybe I'll eat Daniel, if Ivan is still hungry. I offered him a trade.
25 If I gave him all the candy I had in my backpack, would he show me the door out of there? This intrigued Ivan as he started to think really hard about it. Or at least, I hope he was. No, Ivan doesn't want candy. My heart sank. I knew I was screwed no matter what I did. Does Daniel give up yet? I shouted back. No, I don't give up. In fact, I grabbed the largest stick I could find and stared up at him. I shouted, I want to fight, Ivan. A slasher smile appeared on his face. and he screamed.
09 Yay! Fun time! He leapt towards me, and I swung at him but missed as he leaped onto my back and started biting at my neck. I tried to grab at him, but he kept moving just out of reach, so I threw my body to the ground. We wrestled until I finally got the upper hand and punched him in the face with all my strength again and again till I could see blood dripping from his nose. He finally stopped fighting back, and I got to my feet. I turned around and saw that the exit I had come through was back. I was relieved, but before I could leave, I had one more thing I was set on doing. I looked down and realized the big stick I had used was broken in half. At my feet, I found an aluminum baseball bat. I wasn't sure where it had come from, but I happily picked it up and walked over to the badly beaten Ivan.
12 Riddle me this. When is a croquet mallet like a billy club? When? The answer is, I raised the bat above my shoulders. Whenever you want it to be. That's one trick-or-treating, buddy, you... probably won't invite back next year. A very big thank you to Tyler Belmont for this candy haul unlike any other.
