I’m Banking On It | A Halloween Vampire Story

I’m Banking On It | A Halloween Vampire Story

On Halloween night, a hungry vampire comes knocking at a bankrupt blood bank in “I’m Banking On It” by Tyler Belmont. Paralegal Trevor Gillespie is stuck guarding the place, and his unwanted visitor needs an invitation. Trevor has legal orders to keep everyone out, a stubborn streak, and no patience for supernatural sales pitches. But when a vampire listens this closely, one careless sentence could turn an annoying shift into a fight for survival.

Henrique Couto narrates this darkly funny Halloween horror story, blending classic vampire rules, deadpan humor, and a very bad night at work on Weekly Spooky.

five-star rating on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It really does help.

38
00:03:14.639 --> 00:03:19.650
But now, as for tonight, Come a little closer, my spookies.

39
00:03:20.569 --> 00:03:24.990
There's room by the fire, and tonight let's be careful

40
00:03:25.150 --> 00:03:28.889
who we invite to join us. On Halloween, a knock

41
00:03:28.930 --> 00:03:32.729
at the door usually means a rubber mask, a plastic bucket,

42
00:03:32.870 --> 00:03:36.069
and somebody hoping you, well, you haven't run out of

43
00:03:36.110 --> 00:03:40.189
the good candy yet. But imagine spending the holiday at work.

44
00:03:40.840 --> 00:03:45.759
No party, no scary movies, just a desk, a locked door,

45
00:03:46.280 --> 00:03:49.949
and a building full of blood that you've been told

46
00:03:50.069 --> 00:03:56.289
to keep an eye on. Then somebody knocks. He's polite, patient,

47
00:03:56.430 --> 00:04:09.129
and would really like you to invite him inside. I'm

48
00:04:09.229 --> 00:04:16.800
Banking On It by Tyler Belmont Vampires are quite popular

49
00:04:16.980 --> 00:04:20.899
around the world and people have always assumed them to

50
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:25.699
be fictional beings that only exist in stories and the

51
00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:30.990
tail ends of one's imagination. The only people who believe

52
00:04:31.050 --> 00:04:35.790
in the existence of such creatures would be considered critically

53
00:04:35.870 --> 00:04:42.379
insane by most of society and for good reason. Unfortunately,

54
00:04:42.459 --> 00:04:46.199
these people are not only telling the truth, but more

55
00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:51.819
often than not, actually are those pale creatures of the night.

56
00:04:52.660 --> 00:04:56.019
One poor sap that had to spend his entire night

57
00:04:56.519 --> 00:05:01.759
defending a blood bank from a very persistent vampire was

58
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:06.720
Trevor Gillespie. He was a paralegal that found himself roped

59
00:05:06.819 --> 00:05:13.519
into this debacle on Halloween night of all days. Yes, shocker,

60
00:05:13.740 --> 00:05:18.600
we know. This particular blood bank had filed for bankruptcy,

61
00:05:19.060 --> 00:05:22.300
which caused the bank he represents to go into a

62
00:05:22.379 --> 00:05:27.370
huge frenzy of epic proportion. You see, the bank had

63
00:05:27.430 --> 00:05:30.870
provided a loan for them, and they discovered that the

64
00:05:30.930 --> 00:05:36.430
insurance policy for the business was null and void. As

65
00:05:36.490 --> 00:05:40.389
a result of this, young Mr. Gillespie... had been tasked

66
00:05:40.449 --> 00:05:46.449
with guarding the goods from anyone and anything. Naturally, he

67
00:05:46.509 --> 00:05:50.449
was not pleased with this as it completely threw his

68
00:05:50.550 --> 00:05:54.949
life out of whack. There was nothing that really stood

69
00:05:55.129 --> 00:05:58.189
out about Trevor. He was a young man in his

70
00:05:58.329 --> 00:06:03.439
early twenties, freshly graduated from college for only six months

71
00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:07.600
up to this point. He was a short, skinny, spectral

72
00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:11.930
ghost of a man, dressed in nothing but black from

73
00:06:12.009 --> 00:06:16.709
head to toe, with a t-shirt, jeans, and Vessi shoes.

74
00:06:17.589 --> 00:06:21.360
He lit himself a cigar and savored the smoke as

75
00:06:21.420 --> 00:06:25.240
he blew out little rings. What were they going to

76
00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:28.220
do about it? He was the only person in the building.

77
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:31.540
If he was going to be stuck guarding this place,

78
00:06:31.620 --> 00:06:34.800
he was damn well going to be comfortable doing it.

79
00:06:35.839 --> 00:06:38.819
He sat at a long desk with a bright lamp.

80
00:06:39.639 --> 00:06:43.680
It was surrounded by a notebook, a phone, a day planner,

81
00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:48.620
and a cup full of pens and pencils. Sitting back

82
00:06:48.699 --> 00:06:52.810
in his chair, Trevor was reading a copy of Carpe

83
00:06:52.850 --> 00:06:58.870
Jugulum by Terry Pratchett. The building seemed small on the outside.

84
00:06:59.490 --> 00:07:02.850
Before it was a blood bank, it was a convenience store.

85
00:07:03.509 --> 00:07:06.790
Not a very big one, just a simple quick stop.

86
00:07:07.490 --> 00:07:10.060
There was a door that was locked up and had

87
00:07:10.120 --> 00:07:13.269
a Do Not Enter sign smack dab in the center.

88
00:07:14.089 --> 00:07:17.949
Next to the door was an open supply closet, filled

89
00:07:18.029 --> 00:07:23.569
with a wooden stake, a garlic necklace, and nothing else.

90
00:07:25.069 --> 00:07:32.050
Trevor sighed as he blew smoke into the air. His

91
00:07:32.290 --> 00:07:35.240
eyes looked up from his book to spot a tall,

92
00:07:35.779 --> 00:07:40.759
shadowy figure whose face he couldn't see. Smoke flew out

93
00:07:40.779 --> 00:07:45.490
of his nostrils in annoyance. Placing his book down and

94
00:07:45.790 --> 00:07:50.949
gently resting his cigar, Trevor approached the figure at the door.

95
00:07:51.930 --> 00:07:57.790
On further inspection, the shadowy figure was far taller up close,

96
00:07:58.529 --> 00:08:04.850
maybe around six foot four. Trevor, undeterred or even impressed

97
00:08:04.910 --> 00:08:08.750
for that matter, looked up at the face hiding in

98
00:08:08.810 --> 00:08:14.629
the dark. Yeah? Good evening to you, sir. How do

99
00:08:14.670 --> 00:08:19.730
you bid? asked the figure, with a little sign after

100
00:08:19.790 --> 00:08:22.850
you shout out how much money. What do you want?

101
00:08:23.610 --> 00:08:30.180
replied Trevor. Ah, very straightforward. I like it. Is this

102
00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:36.080
the Ulreich Blood Bank? Yes, but we aren't open to

103
00:08:36.120 --> 00:08:39.519
the public due to a complicated series of issues that

104
00:08:39.620 --> 00:08:44.580
I would prefer not to get into. And who might

105
00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:50.639
you be, sir? asked the figure. Names Trevor Gillespie, paralegal

106
00:08:50.679 --> 00:08:56.289
by day and blood bank watchman by night. Oh, you

107
00:08:56.450 --> 00:09:01.629
are a paralegal. Why is a paralegal watching over a

108
00:09:02.370 --> 00:09:09.679
blood bank? Seems rather unusual, he asked politely. In short,

109
00:09:10.350 --> 00:09:14.009
This place filed for bankruptcy, and the bank I represent

110
00:09:14.049 --> 00:09:18.649
discovered the loan they were given is void, so here

111
00:09:18.750 --> 00:09:24.389
I am, explained Trevor. Ah, I see. Such a shame.

112
00:09:24.470 --> 00:09:30.500
I was hoping to acquire some elixir for myself. Raising

113
00:09:30.539 --> 00:09:35.139
an eyebrow, Trevor stared and tilted his head in confusion

114
00:09:35.220 --> 00:09:40.659
while squinting his eyes. Yeah? Yeah? Would you be so

115
00:09:40.759 --> 00:09:46.610
kind as to allow me to enter this establishment? He asked,

116
00:09:46.899 --> 00:09:56.289
yet again, politely. No, replied Trevor. No? Why ever not? Well, sir,

117
00:09:56.750 --> 00:10:00.919
apart from the various legal reasons I'm not... allowed to

118
00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:06.159
do that, it is presently 2.30 in the morning, and

119
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:11.980
I am getting some very uneasy vibes off you. Surely

120
00:10:12.019 --> 00:10:15.200
you jest. Do I look like I'm in the mood

121
00:10:15.259 --> 00:10:19.769
for jokes? The figure leaned in closer to be face

122
00:10:19.850 --> 00:10:25.230
to face with Trevor, revealing an extremely pale man with

123
00:10:25.690 --> 00:10:32.600
unusually pointy ears and sharp teeth. His eyes were piercing red.

124
00:10:33.379 --> 00:10:38.860
Trevor continued to stare with a deadpan expression across his face.

125
00:10:39.899 --> 00:10:45.730
Do I? replied the figure. He blinked. Hard to tell

126
00:10:45.809 --> 00:10:51.549
with that creepy smile, pal? said Trevor. I am no pal.

127
00:10:52.230 --> 00:10:57.029
I am Sebastian Haggerty. I am a vampire, and I

128
00:10:57.129 --> 00:11:01.700
wish to be let in. You do look the part

129
00:11:01.779 --> 00:11:09.240
with the ears and that pale complexion, but sorry, that's

130
00:11:09.299 --> 00:11:14.990
not happening. Sebastian sighs and starts stretching his fingers out.

131
00:11:16.169 --> 00:11:18.909
I did not wish to do this, but You leave

132
00:11:18.970 --> 00:11:24.929
me with no other option, said Sebastian. He waves his

133
00:11:25.009 --> 00:11:31.269
hand over Trevor's face. You will allow me entrance into

134
00:11:31.330 --> 00:11:37.120
this blood bank, he said on command. Trevor stares back

135
00:11:37.169 --> 00:11:41.879
at him with an almost shocked expression. He backs up

136
00:11:42.019 --> 00:11:46.700
as the vampire smiles with glee and is granted entry.

137
00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:52.639
Except he finds he still can't set foot inside as

138
00:11:52.700 --> 00:11:58.179
an invisible barrier blocks his foot from gaining entrance. He

139
00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:04.100
looks up to see Trevor smiling with a devilish grin. Funny,

140
00:12:04.919 --> 00:12:08.350
I don't recall saying aloud that you can come in,

141
00:12:09.370 --> 00:12:14.730
Trevor said. Suddenly the barrier blocking the vampire from entry

142
00:12:15.029 --> 00:12:18.620
was gone as his foot slipped. landed on the floor.

143
00:12:19.710 --> 00:12:24.850
Sebastian walks fully into the bank. He looks up at Trevor,

144
00:12:25.289 --> 00:12:30.029
whose mouth is open in utter shock. The creature of

145
00:12:30.070 --> 00:12:34.789
the night raises his hand and waves his fingers around.

146
00:12:35.889 --> 00:12:40.610
Very poor choice of words to say aloud, my friend.

147
00:12:41.669 --> 00:12:48.429
He boasts with utter glee. Aw, crap. Trevor said in annoyance.

148
00:12:49.970 --> 00:12:54.679
Now then, please direct me to the location of the blood,

149
00:12:55.379 --> 00:13:00.740
if you would be so kind. Sebastian waves his hand again.

150
00:13:02.100 --> 00:13:06.919
Trevor is unfazed by this trickery. He pulls out a

151
00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:10.179
silver cross from around his neck and holds it up,

152
00:13:10.659 --> 00:13:16.299
causing the vampire to wince, clearly in slight pain. I

153
00:13:16.360 --> 00:13:20.110
should have guessed you would be carrying one. Never hurts

154
00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:24.889
to be prepared for such an occasion, said Trevor. Fine,

155
00:13:25.309 --> 00:13:27.970
you are immune to my hypnotism, but at the end

156
00:13:28.110 --> 00:13:33.049
of the day, you are just a man. We do

157
00:13:33.090 --> 00:13:37.399
have a history of taking down bloodsuckers like you. All

158
00:13:37.460 --> 00:13:39.340
I have to do is stab you in the heart

159
00:13:39.379 --> 00:13:42.720
with a wooden stake, or I guess I could wait

160
00:13:42.899 --> 00:13:48.740
until the sun rises. Trevor said confidently. Well, as far

161
00:13:48.840 --> 00:13:51.820
as I can see, you have no stakes to use

162
00:13:51.899 --> 00:13:55.240
at your disposal, and the sun will not rise for

163
00:13:55.340 --> 00:14:00.200
at least four more hours. Trevor slowly looked at his

164
00:14:00.259 --> 00:14:03.860
desk and was more than aware that he had no

165
00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:09.279
actual weapons on his person. The closest thing he had

166
00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:13.830
to a stake was a couple of pencils. While there was,

167
00:14:14.009 --> 00:14:18.580
technically speaking, a stake in the back in the supply closet,

168
00:14:19.159 --> 00:14:23.080
Trevor didn't even bother to try and retrieve it, as

169
00:14:23.139 --> 00:14:28.659
he knew this thing was faster than him. If you

170
00:14:28.759 --> 00:14:32.409
simply allow me access to all the blood you have,

171
00:14:33.090 --> 00:14:40.629
I will gladly take my leave and spare you, Sebastian said. Yeah,

172
00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:43.639
you say that now, but I know you'll double-cross me

173
00:14:43.700 --> 00:14:47.240
at the end and rip my neck out. Hmm, that

174
00:14:47.500 --> 00:14:52.340
is tempting, but I cannot as I myself am in

175
00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:56.590
a rush. A rush for what? Aren't you just trying

176
00:14:56.629 --> 00:15:03.509
to get the blood to drink? Trevor asked. Yes, that

177
00:15:03.730 --> 00:15:07.639
is a reason, but not the main reason. You see,

178
00:15:07.740 --> 00:15:11.529
my master has been on this earth for thousands of

179
00:15:11.590 --> 00:15:16.370
years and prefers not to travel. In fact, there is

180
00:15:16.450 --> 00:15:23.379
a specific reason he wants this particular blood bank, Sebastian explained.

181
00:15:24.799 --> 00:15:28.279
I don't get why. There's not much here. I checked,

182
00:15:28.960 --> 00:15:34.690
Trevor replied. Ah, but have you been to the basement,

183
00:15:35.529 --> 00:15:40.840
he asked. Is that the door that's locked up? Yes,

184
00:15:41.669 --> 00:15:47.659
it hosts the largest supply of blood provided, said Sebastian

185
00:15:48.039 --> 00:15:54.919
in a theatrical manner. Pardon? You see, if we acquired that,

186
00:15:55.590 --> 00:15:58.909
my master would have full control of the supply of

187
00:15:59.009 --> 00:16:04.009
blood for the entire world. We would have a never-ending

188
00:16:04.149 --> 00:16:08.139
food supply. Never again would we have to attack and

189
00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:13.539
kill humans for their blood. Doesn't that sound like a

190
00:16:14.299 --> 00:16:19.320
better world to you? That was a surprisingly good argument

191
00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:23.370
to allow the vampire access to the supply of blood.

192
00:16:24.309 --> 00:16:27.970
Maybe he should have let him have access. It sounds

193
00:16:28.049 --> 00:16:32.710
like it could save lives. You know, that does sound

194
00:16:32.769 --> 00:16:38.389
like a good idea, Trevor said. I'm glad you understand. However,

195
00:16:39.269 --> 00:16:45.789
Trevor added, What? replied the vampire. How do I know

196
00:16:45.870 --> 00:16:49.580
you aren't lying to me in a simple attempt to

197
00:16:50.179 --> 00:16:54.679
get the blood all for yourself? Sebastian stared back at

198
00:16:54.740 --> 00:16:59.379
him with a sly smile and tilted his head slightly

199
00:16:59.500 --> 00:17:03.019
to the left in the direction of the door to

200
00:17:03.139 --> 00:17:08.299
all the blood the world had to offer. The vampire

201
00:17:08.390 --> 00:17:11.559
ran towards the door at a high speed with Trevor

202
00:17:11.619 --> 00:17:16.259
in hot pursuit. Sebastian stood before the door, hands on

203
00:17:16.299 --> 00:17:20.319
the metal guard in front of it. Suddenly, he's tackled

204
00:17:20.359 --> 00:17:24.140
to the ground by Trevor. The two struggle, rolling around

205
00:17:24.200 --> 00:17:27.569
on the floor. Sebastian's on top of him, his hand

206
00:17:27.869 --> 00:17:31.670
grasping the paralegal's neck, and the other held up in

207
00:17:31.730 --> 00:17:36.779
a stance with intent to kill. You know, it really

208
00:17:37.059 --> 00:17:40.900
is a shame that I must end your life. Trevor

209
00:17:40.980 --> 00:17:44.960
couldn't reply as the hand around his throat was damn

210
00:17:44.980 --> 00:17:49.099
near squeezing the life out of him. The vampire examined

211
00:17:49.160 --> 00:17:54.049
him with a curious expression of intrigue. He was debating

212
00:17:54.109 --> 00:17:59.809
if this young man would make a valuable ally. You know,

213
00:17:59.829 --> 00:18:05.049
I could always use a new servant. Sebastian caressed his

214
00:18:05.170 --> 00:18:09.490
fingers across Trevor's face, just enough that he looked more

215
00:18:10.009 --> 00:18:15.970
uncomfortable than he already was. Tell me, are you honestly

216
00:18:16.089 --> 00:18:20.369
satisfied with the state of your life right now, working

217
00:18:20.430 --> 00:18:24.170
a job that requires you to go above and beyond

218
00:18:24.319 --> 00:18:33.200
at your own expense? Not particularly, Trevor replied. Then join me.

219
00:18:33.990 --> 00:18:37.750
Together with the world's supply of blood at our disposal,

220
00:18:38.470 --> 00:18:45.210
we would be unstoppable forces, said Sebastian. Trevor had not

221
00:18:45.349 --> 00:18:50.440
pondered this scenario before, so he thought about it. He

222
00:18:50.480 --> 00:18:59.819
thought about it, and he thought about it. Pass, Trevor replied. Disappointing,

223
00:19:00.660 --> 00:19:05.589
said the Vampire. Sebastian lunged at Trevor's throat. He was

224
00:19:05.670 --> 00:19:09.509
unable to stop him as his teeth pierced his flesh.

225
00:19:10.450 --> 00:19:15.180
Blood splattered from his jugular as the vampire helped himself

226
00:19:15.299 --> 00:19:19.279
to a bite to drink. Trevor tried to claw at him,

227
00:19:20.099 --> 00:19:24.619
but it was no use. He simply wasn't strong enough.

228
00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:30.309
As Sebastian brought his blood-covered face away from Trevor's neck,

229
00:19:31.089 --> 00:19:35.430
He looked into the eyes of his prey with utter glee.

230
00:19:36.509 --> 00:19:40.990
You should have said yes. He began to laugh as

231
00:19:41.029 --> 00:19:43.930
he took so much delight in the suffering of this

232
00:19:44.430 --> 00:19:48.599
poor young man. Trevor raised his hand up to the

233
00:19:48.619 --> 00:19:55.380
vampire's face. holding out two fingers like a peace sign. Oh,

234
00:19:56.170 --> 00:19:59.339
what are you going to do with those? said the

235
00:19:59.420 --> 00:20:05.299
amused vampire. Both fingers jabbed into the vampire's eyes. With

236
00:20:05.380 --> 00:20:08.960
such speed and dexterity, he clenched at his face and

237
00:20:09.250 --> 00:20:12.369
and rolled off of Trevor, who quickly got to his

238
00:20:12.450 --> 00:20:17.390
feet and clenched at his throat. Thinking quickly, he grabbed

239
00:20:17.430 --> 00:20:20.839
a wooden stake on standby and turned around to find

240
00:20:20.920 --> 00:20:29.339
Sebastian missing. Where did the bastard go? He scanned his

241
00:20:29.400 --> 00:20:35.319
surroundings and found nothing. He turned his attention to the mirror.

242
00:20:36.319 --> 00:20:40.220
He was soaked in blood, All over his neck and face,

243
00:20:41.039 --> 00:20:45.759
Trevor was still bleeding, but not as intently as he expected.

244
00:20:46.829 --> 00:20:51.329
He clenched the stake in his other hand. I'm disappointed

245
00:20:51.390 --> 00:20:54.750
in you, young man, to think you wasted such an

246
00:20:55.230 --> 00:21:02.119
opportunity for immortality and a life free of pain, said

247
00:21:02.180 --> 00:21:06.079
the voice of the vampire from somewhere in the room.

248
00:21:07.170 --> 00:21:12.150
Trevor kept his attention in the mirror and listened closely.

249
00:21:13.069 --> 00:21:17.140
With the stake in hand pointed behind him, he stabbed

250
00:21:17.220 --> 00:21:22.579
the vampire right through his heart. Trevor turned around to

251
00:21:22.680 --> 00:21:26.859
find he was attempting to sneak up behind him and

252
00:21:26.980 --> 00:21:33.470
finish the job. He began to cough up some blood. How?

253
00:21:33.490 --> 00:21:39.160
I have no reflections. You shouldn't have seen me coming,

254
00:21:40.119 --> 00:21:44.630
said the creature of the night. I didn't. I heard you,

255
00:21:45.549 --> 00:21:50.410
Trevor said as he twisted the stake and Sebastian winced

256
00:21:50.490 --> 00:21:56.299
in pain. He fell to the ground and turned to dust,

257
00:21:57.119 --> 00:22:03.079
leaving nothing behind except his clothes and whatever that accent

258
00:22:03.140 --> 00:22:09.069
was all about. Trevor walked to the sink and wrapped

259
00:22:09.150 --> 00:22:12.829
up his neck with wet paper towels. He returned to

260
00:22:12.869 --> 00:22:18.670
his seat, lit up another cigar, and put some smoke

261
00:22:19.349 --> 00:22:28.000
into the air. I need a raise. Well, that's one

262
00:22:28.059 --> 00:22:32.039
way to close an account. A big bloody thank you

263
00:22:32.059 --> 00:22:35.960
to my pal Tyler Belmont for this story. And to

264
00:22:36.079 --> 00:22:39.880
our hapless Trevor in the story, ask for that raise

265
00:22:40.099 --> 00:22:43.859
in writing. Trust me on that one. And this Halloween,

266
00:22:43.940 --> 00:22:47.849
check the peephole before you open the door, because some

267
00:22:47.930 --> 00:22:52.509
visitors clearly don't want candy. But they want something else

268
00:22:52.569 --> 00:22:56.569
you're fully capable of handing out, even though you really

269
00:22:56.609 --> 00:22:59.420
don't want to. And thank you so much for joining
