Fool’s Hill: An Oregon Folklore Mystery of Witches, Disappearances & Cannibals

Fool’s Hill: An Oregon Folklore Mystery of Witches, Disappearances & Cannibals

Brenda receives her missing uncle’s manuscript about Fool’s Hill, an Oregon legend connecting witches, disappearances, and bodies found in the woods.

Folklore writer R. H. Thurston—known to family as Randy—traces the mystery to a 1919 newspaper item about William Ivanhoe’s claim that he saw witches near Locust Grove. Later reports mention stolen crops, strange carvings, a mutilated body, and other locals who vanished around the same patch of forest. A research trip brings Randy to a saloon, an abandoned property, and Bob Smith, a man whose daughter Gracie disappeared years earlier.

The deeper Randy follows the documents, the more the legend resists a supernatural explanation without becoming any less horrifying. Someone destroys his tires. Screams travel through the trees. Modern disappearances begin to resemble the century-old accounts, and the phrase “the wrong side of Fool’s Hill” becomes both a warning and a real place from which curious people may not return.

Bruce Haney’s “Fool’s Hill” is presented through forum posts, a missing author’s document, old newspaper evidence, and Brenda’s final investigation. It blends Pacific Northwest folklore, folk horror, feral cannibals, missing-person mystery, and the possibility that one survivor is still rebuilding the legend in the Oregon woods.
