0:00 Three kisses before dawn. That's how Tiffany's mother says she'll recognize her future husband. Tiffany has other plans, especially with a witch's initiation waiting inside of a haunted mansion. But on Halloween, dodging destiny is difficult enough without a banshee hunting you. Trick or treat. There's a chill in the air. Must be fall. Join me for a tale of Halloween.

1:00 You will experience tales of horror, ghosts, and death. It is not recommended for the weak at heart, but who really listens to warnings anyway? This is Weekly Spooky. Hello, my spookies. No, it's not Wednesday. It's a Friday. A beautiful, autumnal Halloween Friday. And we have a very special trip through Strickfield to share with you. I'm your host, Enrique Couto, and tonight we're going to have some Halloween fun and maybe just fall in love while we're at it. But before we get to that, I want to say thank you all so much for making Weekly Spooky a hopefully major part of your spooky season tradition. It means a lot to me to help you get into the spirit of things. Pun intended. Because I know that when it comes to adult life, sometimes it's hard to feel that old magic. But that's what we're here for. To bring you that fun fear that keeps you coming back for more.

2:26 And remember, we have something scary for you every single day of the week, sometimes more than once per week. So make sure you're subscribed on your favorite podcast app. And while you're at it, leave us a five-star rating on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It makes a big difference and it helps the show continue to grow as we end our seven years and head in to number eight. Now, as for tonight... Get cozy, scooch up to the fire, because tonight we're talking about first dates. A Halloween date sounds pretty good, doesn't it? I mean, dinner, a horror marathon at the drive-in, and a little autumn chill to give you an excuse to sit just a little closer together.

3:18 But what happens when somebody predicts how the whole thing ends before you've even agreed to go out? Not whether you'll have a good time, but who you're going to marry. Till death do you part. Tiffany Hawthorne comes from a family of witches, and she has no intention of letting a crystal ball make all her decisions. But Baxter Donnelly, he has other plans even though he doesn't believe in magic at all. And there's an old house in Strickfield waiting for them. A Halloween Fate Foretold by Rob Fields Present Day A Discovery It's Saturday around noon when this little mousy finally wakes up. I was watching movies with the gang and didn't get to bed till late. No problem since I've got the house all to myself while Mom, Dad, and Ariel Mirren are in North Ridgeway visiting Grandma, Dad's Mom.

4:29 After getting cleaned up, I go downstairs and fix a little something to eat. I'm halfway through my Sammy and coffee when I get a text from Mom, checking in. When I ask her how things are with Grandma, Mom says everything's good and that Grandma adores Ariel. Yeah, that's why my family went. Grandma wanted to meet Ariel since she's part of the family now. Anyway... Mom tells me to go up to the attic and look through the old chest that's there. Something about finding a silver compact inside. After we're done talking, I finish eating and head upstairs.

5:10 Then I open the attic door and climb the rest of the way. There it is. The old chest near the window Mom said was there. I open the chest, move a few things aside, and find the compact. Pulling it free knocks one of the books open. I happen to read the exposed pages and realize it's a journal. I'm ready to close everything up, but now I'm curious. I put the compact down and pull the journal out. Looks like it's Dad's, since it's his handwriting. I read a few more pages and see it's about how he and Mom first met. I gotta know more. Yeah, I know I probably shouldn't be reading it, but I can't stop.

6:03 I sit by the window and dig deeper into the journal. You know what? Why don't I tell you the story as I'm reading it? 2006 Becoming Lost On Monday morning, Halloween Eve... A modified Chevy Corvette rolled into the parking lot at Strickfield High School. Yeah, Dad showed me pics of his first car. After parking, he stepped out and took a deep breath. Back then, he wore his usual jeans and t-shirt under an open, long-sleeved shirt. Dad gave his usual smirk as he looked at the building. Now you know where I get my smirky smile from. It was his last year at Strickfield High. After graduation, he'd go to college, study hard, then return to Strickfield and work for Grandpa at his law firm. Dad was one of those happy-go-lucky kind of guys. Whenever he walked into school, people were always greeting him. He never knew what made him so popular. He wasn't a jock. He wasn't the valedictorian, even though He did make the honor roll every grading period.

7:23 He wasn't in band or choir either. He was great with cars and computers and already knew quite a bit about law, thanks to Grandpa. His usual group of friends came over to meet him. About time you got here, Mitch Travers said, nodding over his shoulder. Look, Meredith Horton's right over there. You gotta know she'd one day be my friend Richie's mom, in case you didn't know. Dad's friends had spent the past week trying to get him back together with Meredith. Wow, I never knew he dated Richie's mom. Small world, huh? They'd gone out briefly, and while Dad thought she was beautiful and had a nice smile, he didn't see a future with her. Good thing, too, cause...

8:14 This little mousy, and probably Richie too, wouldn't be here if history had gone the Meredith way. Guys, come on, I appreciate what you're trying to do and everything, but I have my own plans after I graduate, he told him. Meredith Horton just isn't part of those plans. Sorry, but I really don't want to go out with her. Then who do you want? Mike Yeager asked. Harlan Mirren? Jenny Daly? Michelle Rafe Snyder? Come on, man, there's gotta be somebody. Dad shrugged. Hey, I don't think I'm the dating type.

8:54 You guys tried setting me up with Meredith, but we're just not a match. He pointed to Roger Johns. You even tried setting me up with your sister, and that did not work out. So you're just gonna go out trick-or-treating on Halloween night? Mitch muttered. Well, there's the Halloween Horror-Thon at the drive-in tomorrow, Dad said. Yeah, right. I hear that's sold out, Roger jeered. Dad reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out two tickets. My dad won these at a Halloween trivia thing over in North Ridgeway on Friday. Gave them right to me. But that's two tickets, Donnerly, Mitch pointed out before pointing at Meredith Horton. I'm sure she'd appreciate you taking her to the drive-in. Dad chuckled. Ah, but a little birdie told me Meredith absolutely hates horror movies, so there's no point in asking her. Mitch gave him a disappointed look. Then, oh, almost forgot. Thanks for getting my computer running again. Yep, Dad's where I learned a lot of my computer stuff from. No problem, Dad replied.

10:12 Lucky for you I had some extra parts lying around. The four friends headed into first period. Even there, girls turned to look at the group, especially Dad. Then Mr. Meter came in, just after the bell rang. He was about ten minutes into his lecture when Principal Matthew Van Deist, the older brother of our principal at Strickfield Junior High, entered the classroom. Van Deist was fresh out of Strickfield University and had taken over after the former principal accepted a better offer elsewhere. Dad couldn't hear what the principal and teacher were saying, but Van Deist soon turned back to the door and motioned for someone to come in.

10:56 The moment the new girl entered, Dad couldn't take his eyes off her. Whoa, Mitch whispered. She must have escaped from that Friday the 13th movie, Mike said. The one with the fake Jason. Looks just like her, all right, Roger agreed. Guess she escaped from the fake Jason. Hey, Baxter, you okay, buddy? Mike asked. Dad barely heard his friends. Okay, maybe he caught enough to know they thought the new girl was a dead ringer for Violet from Friday the 13th, A New Beginning. Mostly, he just stared. He hadn't blinked since she walked in. Class, this is Tiffany Hawthorne, Mr.

11:44 Meter said. She just moved to Strickfield from Chagrin Falls with her family. Mr. Meter pointed to the empty chair next to Dad at his table. He felt his spirits lift when Tiffany Hawthorne came and sat with him. Mom smiled and said hi. Dad smiled and nodded once. Mom was only too aware he still hadn't taken his eyes off her. Yeah, his friends tried to set him up with other girls at Strickfield High, and now Dad was completely lost in this new girl. What Dad didn't know was how far over his head he was really going to be with Mom. The Wrong Girl Dad had never dated a punk girl, though he remembered Violet being one in that movie. Mom's makeup and clothes, even the dark streak in front of her hair, made the resemblance nearly perfect.

12:49 Now Mom was staring at him right back. Even though Dad was infatuated with her, she didn't seem to feel the same way. If anything, she probably wondered what his problem was. Mom knew being a Hawthorne guaranteed most guys wouldn't want to date her, which was fine by her, but... Dad wasn't scared of her, which scared Mom. Um, can I help you? she asked. Before he could say another word, Mr. Meter nailed him. Baxter Donnelly, would you like to work this problem out on the board? When Dad slowly faced front, the teacher made it clear he had no choice. Now would be nice. Dad sighed and walked up to the board.

13:41 He picked up the chalk and worked through the problem. When he finished, he turned to the teacher. Very good, Baxter. So glad your eyes are on your subjects the way they were on Miss Hawthorne. When the rest of the class started laughing, the instructor told him, You can go back to your seat now. Dad didn't care about Meter humiliating him as he made his way back to Mom. She still didn't seem too eager to be sitting with him when he sat back on his seat. He finally made his move the second he was off meter's radar. If you like horror movies, I've got an extra ticket for the Strickfield Drive-In tomorrow night, if you might want to come. Her answer came immediately. No, I don't think so.

14:33 Dad raised his hands in front of him. I'm really a good guy, just... Ask any of my buds. I'm sure you are, Mom replied. However, I don't watch horror movies. Mr. Donnerly, the teacher interrupted. Can it wait until after class? Dad wasn't giving up on Mom by a long shot. In fact, he went after her the moment class was over. What would you want to do instead? He asked. Just name it. Mom couldn't believe Dad was still sticking with her after she'd already said no. I'm sorry, Baxter, but I just ain't interested. Dad still wouldn't give up. I'm going to be honest with you. You saw my friends in that class.

15:26 They've been trying to set me up with girls at this high school, and I've been out with a few, sure, but I want to go out with you, Tiffany Hawthorne. I want to get to know you better. If you don't want to see horror movies on Halloween, I'm okay with that. I'm willing to do whatever you want to do. Just name it. Meredith Horton approached and pointed at Dad. Are you really interested in a Hawthorne? Haven't you heard the stories? They're as bad as the carnivores. Her family ranges from witches to vampires. Dad barely glanced at her. I don't buy it. Now, if you don't mind, Meredith's jaw dropped before she turned and stormed away. But when Dad turned to talk to Mom again, she was gone.

16:23 The Prophecy As luck would have it, Mom was in nearly every class with Dad. Kinda like how Ariel Mirren's in every class with me. Anyway... Mom had an uneasy time the rest of her first day at Strickfield High. Dad managed to get close enough to talk to her a few more times and even asked her out again. Mom rejected him. Again. At the final bell, Mom skipped her locker and hurried home. Dad tried to find her, but she gave him the slip. She went straight to my other grandma, Regine, in the room where she kept all her Special magic items. What's wrong, dear? Grandma asked.

17:10 At first, Mom didn't want to talk about it. When Grandma gave her that stern look, Mom told her about Dad. Then she pointed to Grandma's crystal ball. This morning you told me I would meet my future husband today. Grandma's expression hardened. And yet you continue to doubt me. She raised a finger. Have my predictions not always come true? But Mom didn't back down. That means I have no control over my own destiny, then. I'm not buying that. Mom, I want to make my own choices. You are a Hawthorne, Grandma said. Some names have their destinies foretold, and ours is one of them. You may make certain choices for yourself, but Others are tied to the name you carry. But I have to have a husband? Mom countered. Mom, I want to choose my own destiny. I want to live my life the way I choose to live it. Mom expected Grandma to get angry again. Instead, she folded her arms in front of her. By all means, child, see if you can escape your destiny. You may find it harder than you think. I assure you I won't stand in your way. She unfolded her arms and raised her finger.

18:41 But truly, on Halloween you shall have confirmation of who your husband is to be. Mom was worried, but she was interested just the same. It's Baxter Donnerly, isn't it? He hasn't been able to keep away from me since this morning. He's already asked me out twice. When she saw Grandma's raised eyebrow, she pointed at her. What, do you know something else? No, you don't want to know. But you shall know, come tomorrow, Grandma answered. When she saw Mom's frustration, she softened up. You shall know who your future husband is to be when he kisses you not once, but three times on Halloween. If you truly believe this person to be Baxter Donnerly, then avoid him, if you can. Mom's eyes widened. Baxter's going to kiss me?

19:42 Three times tomorrow? And before Halloween night is over. In other words, by the time the sun rises. On November 1st. Grandma added. If it's any consolation, do you feel your future betrothed would follow you on your initiation tomorrow night? That is, assuming you still wish to follow in the ways of our family. Mom shook her head just a little. No, I won't forsake the white light. You've shown me I can't ever turn my back on that. She took a deep breath. That's it, then. I have to avoid Baxter Donnerly tomorrow. You know what, Mom? He can't find me if I don't go to school. Grandma chuckled. And this one time, I won't stop you from playing hooky. In fact- I encourage it. Now come, help me make dinner.

20:44 Your father will be home in a little while. Yes, Mom. As Mom helped Grandma in the kitchen, she remembered other times she'd tried to escape a fate tied to her family name. This time, she was determined to avoid Dad on Halloween. In fact, she already had a plan. Halloween morning. Mom woke at her usual time. Once she was ready, she told her parents she was leaving early. Good luck, Tiffany, Grandpa called after her. No doubt Grandma had told him everything. Mom shot outside, then narrowed her eyes at her car.

21:28 She wasn't going to risk climbing in only to find it wouldn't start. Instead, she remembered the route she'd walked to Strickfield High the day before. Keep in mind, Halloween and November 1st were still school days back then. They only became holidays in Strickfield recently. Mom chose a random direction and walked toward downtown village. Then she stopped, wondering if Dad would somehow be there. She even thought about going to Denoyer's Grill, but what was to say Dad wouldn't want to eat breakfast there himself? Mom was frustrated, but also paranoid. Paranoid. No matter where she decided to go, she kept imagining Dad would somehow be there waiting for her. No, she finally said. Baxter Donnelly can't possibly be wherever I choose to go. Strickfield ain't that small of a village.

22:27 Then it came to her. I'll go hide out at Strickfield University. There's no way Baxter's going to go there. Mom had explored Strickfield after her family moved into their new house. Remembering the way to the university, she turned and headed there. So far, so good, she told herself as the campus came into view. She was about to cross University Drive when a familiar voice called. Tiffany? Mom gulped when she heard that familiar voice and turned toward the nearby house. Dad was on the front porch, picking up the Strickfield Journal to bring inside. It's not possible, she thought. I really walked out to Baxter's house? The bitter end. Dad was already dressed for school. He leaped off the porch and went right to Mom. What brings you all the way out here? he asked. Um, I...

23:33 Mom flubbed, unable to believe Grandma's prophecy was already working against her. Dad raised a hand and quickly waved off the question. It doesn't matter. Listen, if you need a ride to school, I'm leaving in a few minutes. Um, I, um, uh, boy, was Mom ever in a heap of trouble. How on earth was she going to get out of this fix? Mom pointed toward campus and blurted the first explanation she could find. Coffee! I want to go to the university for coffee. Dad patted her shoulder. I know right where the bitter end is. I'll take you there. Mom didn't know what else to say. Um, okay. A few minutes later, Dad held the door to Wilder Hall for her. When she paused inside to look around, He pointed ahead. The bitter end's right over there. Soon they walked into the campus coffeehouse. Mom still couldn't believe she ran into Dad the way she did, but right now all she wanted was coffee. As she dug into her purse, Dad stopped her.

24:49 I got it. Whatever you want, he told her. Mom wanted to protest, but she was already in enough trouble, so she nodded. At least she told the barista what she wanted without flubbing. Dad placed his own order and paid for both. They got their drinks and Dad looked at his watch. We still got time to get back to my house and get to the car. Then I'll take us to school. Mom didn't know how to lie to Dad or how to refuse him. She knew he wasn't a dummy. Not after the way he handled that math problem in Mr. Meter's class the day before. When they reached his car, Dad opened the passenger door up for Mom. Once she was inside, he closed it and walked around to his side. Mom had to admit she liked Dad's muscle car. On the way to school, they talked about all kinds of things, and she wasn't flubbing anymore.

25:50 At Strickfield High, they got out and stood beside the Corvette. I still want to take you out tonight, Dad told her. I know we just met yesterday and everything, but he took a deep breath. I'm just gonna lay it out here. I didn't get much sleep last night. I couldn't stop thinking about you. I get how this works. I know I can't make you go out with me if you don't want to, but I had to at least tell you how I feel. Baxter, I, um, um, She was flubbing again. They were silent as they just looked at each other. And before either of them knew it, Dad gently grabbed Mom's shoulders and kissed her. A promise. Mom couldn't believe it. Her first kiss ever. Dad backed away at once. I'm sorry I didn't mean for that to happen.

27:00 Mom just looked at him. But it did. She sighed. Okay, if you still want to take me to the drive-in tonight. She stopped herself when she remembered. Actually, no, I do have something else I have to do. I can't be out that late. Dad still wasn't giving up. Dinner, then. I'll take you to Denoyer's Grill if you haven't been there yet. I promise you won't be disappointed. Mom shook her head quickly. It just won't work, Baxter. I'm a Hawthorne. That should be enough to tell you I'm bad news. You really should listen to that girl from yesterday. Dad looked her in the eyes. I don't care, Tiffany. I've dated a couple of Mirrens before. I'm not scared of somebody's name. A name is just a name. I really like you. and I want to get to know you.

27:58 Come on, one date. After that, if you don't want me to talk to you ever again, then I'll respect your decision and leave you alone. Mom held out her little finger. You willing to pinky promise? Dad didn't hesitate. He hooked his finger around hers and made the promise. As Mom always tells me, a pinky promise is a pinky promise. You just don't ever break them period okay what time should i expect you mom asked the date mom had second thoughts about keeping her pinky promise to dad she thought better of it when she remembered how many times grandma stressed the importance of keeping such promises you just never break a pinky promise tiffany It'll come back on you if you do. Same thing Mom always tells me. Deep down, Mom knew Grandma would give her a hard time if she learned she broke hers to Dad.

29:08 But just as she was gonna break it, not caring what Grandma would've done, Dad's car turned onto her road from a nearby intersection and was soon in her driveway. That naggin' feelin' in Mom's tummy returned as she made herself walk out to Dad's car. Like that morning, he was a gentleman and opened the door for her. Soon they were seated in a booth at Denoyer's Grill. Mom saw other people from Strickfield High there. given her dirty looks. She was used to him since she was a Hawthorne. Dad saw him too, but he didn't care. Mom listened as Dad told her about Strickfield, looking for anything that might keep the date going. In a way, she envied him.

29:59 He was popular enough to choose any girl he wanted, yet he wanted to be with a Hawthorne. Meredith Horton came by and deliberately knocked Mom's glass over, spilling water into her lap. Dad handed her napkins and asked the waitress for a towel. While his attention was elsewhere, Mom fixed Meredith with a glare. And you know she was real mad when that eyebrow shot up. Meredith shrieked when people suddenly started picking up their drinks and throwing them right at her. No, what are you doing? Stop! Wow, Mom's got powers. I gotta keep reading this. Nobody even looked at Mom. After all, she hadn't caused it, right?

30:50 I'm all right, Baxter, she told him, taking the towel from his hand. After Dad sat back down, Mom used the towel to wipe the spilled water from the table. Then she faced him and thanked him for the help. Over dinner, Mom stopped flubbing and came further out of her shell. They ate and talked until Dad paid the check. Outside by the car, they faced each other again. Would you like to do something else? Dad asked. Or did Meredith kind of end our date? Mom still wanted to prove she controlled her destiny, but she didn't want to hurt Dad. He had treated her well, and she wasn't about to let Meredith or anybody at school decide who she could spend her time with. We can go to the drive-in, she said. We're not too late, are we?

31:48 Not at all. Dad put his hands on her shoulders. Are you sure? You said you don't watch horror movies. That doesn't mean I won't like them, she replied. I'll give them a chance. Tonight is Halloween. Okay, then. He let go of her shoulders and raised his finger. But if you get scared and don't want to stay, just say the word and we're gone. They climbed back into the Corvette and headed straight for the Strickfield Drive-In. Contrasts Dad quickly learned their taste in music were very different.

32:30 He liked easy listening music while Mom loved punk. He should have known from her clothes and hairstyle. He let Mom play songs on her iPod, ranging from Green Day to Blink-182 and even My Chemical Romance. Even today, Mom's punk music doesn't bother Dad. Then the horror-thon started. The truth was, Dad wasn't into horror movies back then, but he didn't want to let Grandpa's tickets go to waste. Much to his surprise, Mom enjoyed one movie after another. The truth was, she had always loved horror films. She even laughed whenever Dad winced at one of the scary scenes. Still, as long as Mom was having fun, Dad was willing to stay with her and watch all four movies. When the horror-thon was over, Dad drove Mom home as promised.

33:29 Along the way, they talked about the movies they'd seen. Dad still wasn't a horror fan yet, but he'd come around to her side eventually. Now they were sitting in the car, just looking at each other. Mom didn't seem to want the date to be over. Then again, she didn't run from Dad's car just because she was home. Dad knew he didn't want this to be the only time he would see her. And then, it happened again. Dad kissed Mom for the second time that Halloween and apologized the moment they came apart. Believe me, I didn't intend to, he started to say. Yes, you did, she said casually. Dad put it plainly. I want to go out with you again. Mom got out and started toward the front porch. Dad climbed out to walk her up, but she quickly turned around. I had fun tonight, Baxter, Mom said. We'll talk tomorrow at school, okay? Dad sighed. Okay, sure.

34:43 When he got back in the car, Mom turned and waved. Dad waved back before pulling away. He hadn't gone far when he noticed Mom had forgotten her iPod on the seat. He stopped and made a U-turn. When he reached the intersection to turn onto her road, he saw Mom, but she wasn't going into her house. In fact, she was already two houses away. Dad knew he couldn't just turn off the headlights and follow at a distance. His car made way too much noise. He pulled over. parked, got out, and followed her on foot. Mom walked past some trick-or-treaters.

35:28 Dad used some of them to hide himself. What was Mom doing? He had to know. He stayed out of sight and followed her on the other side of Ridge Road. Soon she turned down Pleasant Valley. Dad followed Mom discreetly until they reached the one house that made people cross the other side of the street. When she reached the gate, it seemed to open for her all by itself. Nah, that can't be right, Dad muttered. That's the old... The old Carnivosh estate is just a spooky-looking run-down house nobody's lived in since the early 1970s. People say it's haunted, but... No, ghosts and haunted houses are not real. So... Why is Tiffany going in there? Dad watched Mom go up the front steps. One of the doors opened for her all by itself. Mom didn't hesitate and walked inside like it was her house. Then the door slammed shut behind her all by itself. Courage Dad wasn't afraid to admit the Carnivosh estate looked dark and spooky on Halloween night. He

36:58 pressed the Indiglo light on his watch and saw it was just after midnight. Trick-or-treating was over until next Halloween, but other happenings were still going on around Strickfield. He remembered Strickfield Video being packed, along with all the pizza delivery drivers passing by during the date. and while he was following Mom. Even so, he couldn't leave Mom alone in that dark old mansion. I can't believe I'm gonna do this, he told himself. Okay, when I find her, if it turns out she's really having a slumber party with some friends, then I'll say sorry and leave her alone.

37:43 I just have to know she's alright. Dad started toward the estate. only for his feet to freeze halfway there. Come on, it's an abandoned house. What's it going to do to you? He found he could move again and made his way to the old mansion. When he reached the front doors and tried the knobs, neither of them turned for him. Suddenly, lightning flashed across the front porch. Dad gasped and spun around only for the thunder to make him cry out. After he got hold of himself, he remembered Grandpa saying it would rain after midnight, maybe around one. Dad grabbed a knob and threw his shoulder into the door. It held through two tries, then gave on the third and sent him stumbling into the parlor.

38:38 The moment he straightened up, the door slammed behind him all by itself. The haunted house. Lightning flashed through what seemed like every window. Part of Dad wanted to turn around and leave, but he couldn't abandon Mom. Besides, there was no way any group of girls would choose that house for a sleepover, and Mom didn't have any friends in Strickfield yet anyway. Which way should he go? Dad had to choose. Since the stairway was closest, he started up, each wooden step creaking beneath him. He kept himself steady and made it halfway before a pale movement in the hallway brought him to a sudden stop. A ghostly white woman floated from the hallway toward the stairs. Dad knew he should run, yet part of him still wondered whether she was some kind of trick. Seeing a woman hang in midair without wires or any other support, made that explanation a whole lot harder to believe. As the woman drew closer, Dad saw that it wasn't just her dress that was white. Her hair, face, and skin were all pale, too.

40:06 Everything except her eerily glowing green eyes. Soon she reached the top of the stairs. For a long moment, Dad and the ghostly woman stared at each other. Finally, She smiled sweetly. Dad had managed a small smile back. Then the woman's jaw dropped, much lower than he knew it ought to be able to, and she belted out a very loud scream. Dad cried out as he lost his footing and started tumbling down the stairs. He managed to stop himself before hitting the bottom. The woman floated down after him. Dad scrambled to his feet and fled into the kitchen, only to find her sinister smile and ghostly white form following close behind. Another scream hit him like a shovel and sent him into the refrigerator. Before she could do it again, he forced himself up and bolted through the other doorway. Leaving so soon? I won't hear of it. The woman's horrible laughter followed him. She ain't real, Dad told himself. Ghosts don't exist. Oh, but I'm much more than a ghost. The woman mocked him. Another scream sent Dad tumbling to the floor. As he tried to get up, the woman was suddenly on him. Know what

41:39 I am yet, Baxter? She sneered. I'm a banshee. She pointed to him. And now I'm going to break your eardrums. Now Dad wasn't feeling so scared. Wait a minute here. How do you know my name? I never told you it. Oh, but you do know me. She raised her finger. And I'll tell you very soon. After I've had some fun with you. Dad didn't want to wait around to see what the banshee had in mind. He got up and ran. Run, Baxter.

42:23 You won't get far. He reached the front doors and grabbed the knobs. Then remembered Mom. Turning back, he saw the banshee rushing toward him. He barely twisted aside before another scream could hit him with its full force. Dad raced upstairs, two steps at a time. The banshee was already floating onto his floor, but maybe he could still put enough distance between them to find somewhere to hide. He ducked into a bedroom, slammed and locked the door, then looked through the back window, at the graveyard, out back.

43:05 Lightning flashed, thunder rattled the room, and the first drops of rain began ticking. against the glass. Dad dropped away from the window and tried to catch his breath. Then he heard another scream, and the door burst apart. The banshee floated into the room. Oh, you want to play, do you? Nope, Dad said, jumping to his feet. He charged her and bounced off as if he'd hit a wall. Her laughter filled the room. Okay, uh, you're not really a ghost, Dad muttered. The banshee answered with another scream that hurled him across the four-poster bed and dropped him hard on the floor beyond it. Dad knew he couldn't keep letting her throw him around like that. When she tried again, Dad ducked the blast, rolled across the mattress, and scrambled off the other side. He hit the floor running and escaped into the hallway. Oh, man, he groaned, then remembered why he was there. Tiffany. No, no, Tiffany.

44:21 Only me. The banshee chased him through one hallway and down another. Dad circled back to the stairs, raced to the first floor, and spotted the basement door. He slipped through, closed it quietly, and waited in the dark. Her laughter drifted past the basement door. Dad didn't dare move until it faded into the house. He was still no closer to finding Mom, and down there it was black as pitch. For the moment, though, the banshee seemed to be gone. Dad felt lost and utterly alone in the haunted house. Later, Dad woke up in utter darkness, unsure when he'd fallen asleep.

45:18 His Indiglo watch gave him a faint glow, but not much. Better than nothing. He found an old candle, then remembered he didn't smoke like some of his buddies, and didn't carry a lighter. Dad didn't want to go back out and run into that banshee, so... He moved through the basement of the Carnivosh estate, looking for another way out. Where was she in all of this? Dad refused to leave without her. A shape moved atop an old dresser. Then sprang at him. He screamed and tried to dodge, but the thing knocked him into a pile of old clothes.

46:00 Once he got his wits back, he found the Indiglo button on his watch and held it down again. It was only a black cat. It sat there, watching him curiously. It's okay, kitty, he told it. After a moment, the cat stood and hissed. Its body seemed to swell to nearly twice its size, then shrink back to normal before it walked away. Dad got up and followed the watch's dim glow. from room to room. By now, he had no idea how much of the basement he'd searched or whether he was going in circles. He could only hope the little light would hold out. He stepped into a hallway and wondered which direction to take. He'd have one heck of a story for the guys at school in the morning, assuming he escaped the Carnivosh estate to tell it.

47:06 Dad picked another direction and was about to go when he saw a faint light coming from the far end of the hall. He let go of his watch button and went toward it. When he got there, the light was flickering in different patterns. At first, he didn't want to see what was behind the door. For all he knew, there could be a mad scientist's lab in there with somebody making a monster or some other Creepy thing. Dad shook his head and threw all caution to the wind as he grabbed the knob and opened the door to a room full of light. Believing. Dad shielded his eyes from the flickering glow that filled the room. Baxter? Is that you? He heard a familiar voice call out. As his vision adjusted, He saw Mom sitting at a table with a crystal ball blazing in front of her. He approached carefully. Why... Why are you here? Mom answered with a question of her own. How did you find me here?

48:24 Dad explained that he'd seen her walk away after dropping her off, then followed her. When I saw you come in here, I couldn't just leave you here. Dad finished. I had to know if you were okay and why you felt you had to come here. Mom seemed to glow in the lights of the crystal ball. Remember who I am, Baxter. I'm a Hawthorne. My family is up to its ears in magic. Tonight is my initiation into the white light. After I turned 18, I started my trials to become a full witch. Tonight is... The final one.

49:08 Even after being chased through a haunted house by a banshee, Dad still refused to believe in ghosts or magic. Okay, look, I get it. it's Halloween, but enough's enough, he told her. Come on, I'll take you home. I'm sure your parents are worried about you. They know I'm here, Mom answered. This is my initiation. I have to find a mystic silver compact Mom hid Somewhere in this house. Then summon the grand white witch before dawn. If I can't do both, I fail my initiation into the white light. Mom spoke strange words in a language only she understood. The flickering light steadied and turned blue. Nice trick, Dad said. Oh, what I'm doing here is no trick, I assure you.

50:08 Mom spoke more of those strange words, turning the light an eerie green. Dad cautiously approached her. No, seriously, how are you doing it? Are you stepping on switches under the table or something? Mom glared. Are you calling me a charlatan? She rose and narrowed her eyes. I'll show you, Baxter Donnerly. Mom spoke that strange language again, At the final word, she snapped up both hands, and an invisible force lifted Dad off his feet and flung him backward into another pile of clothes. When Dad got up, he faced Mom. Sorry to tell you, Tiffany, but any second- or third-rate magician can do that. Oh, that made Mom even hotter. Me, a mere magician? Fine. How about this?

51:08 Mom uttered a quick spell. There was no rug underneath Dad, but she crouched and pretended to grab one. With a sharp yank on the invisible rug, she sent him falling backwards into the clothes again. He stood right back up. If you want to put me under your spell, believe me, you already have. I'm flippin' crazy about you. He raised a finger. But ghosts, demons, magic, witches, none of it's real. It's all make-believe. Mom was real mad now. You just don't want to believe, do you? I'll make you believe, Baxter.

51:48 She raised both arms and chanted, clothes lifted from the floor and circled the room. Then Mom floated up, sitting cross-legged in midair. When her eyes opened, they glowed bright orange. Dad approached her slowly and knelt, searching beneath her for wires or anything that might hold her up. Finding nothing, he stood and felt along her arms and the back of her sweater. You won't find a single thing keeping me off the floor like this, Mom assured him. I really am levitating. And now, Dad suddenly felt himself coming off the floor and floating next to her. Whoa, how are you even doing this? What kind of magician are you?

52:39 Maybe you didn't understand it yet, Dad, but Mom was so awesome. I am a real witch who follows and practices the ways of the white light, Mom answered. But you still doubt me. You still believe I'm a charlatan. But can charlatans do something like this? Dad flipped upside down until his feet planted on the ceiling. Oh, you just wait till I get back down there, he warned. Go ahead and try, Mom challenged as she lowered herself to the floor. Dad jumped from the ceiling to get back to the ground. However, his feet were right back on the ceiling again, like gravity was working the wrong way against him. Huh? This can't be right. He tried twice more with the same result. Even when he walked above Mom- He stayed stuck upside down. Mom turned around.

53:37 You're staying right there until I decide you can come back down. I'll teach you to call me a charlatan or even a mere magician. Dad pointed down at her. I'm not going to believe, Tiffany. None of this is real. None of it. Mom laughed. Mom laughed. Then explain it, smart guy. How am I doing all of this? She pointed to the clothes still circling the room. Maybe I need to throw one more thing into the mix, then... You will believe. She spoke another spell. Dad exploded in a burst of magic and dropped from the ceiling into her waiting arms. What? What's going on? Dad cried as his senses returned. Mom held him with surprising ease. then set him on the table. Somehow the table neither collapsed nor tipped. Dad looked into the nearby mirror, and his jaw dropped at the face beside the crystal ball. Mom gently scratched his head. There now, she said softly. Are you finally a believer, little kitty? Secrets revealed. Dad raised what he thought was a hand and found a black front leg ending in a paw. Claws popped out from it.

55:09 He gasped and looked up at Mom. Very funny, he snapped. Okay, I'm a believer. Can you change me back now? Mom laughed mischievously and picked him up. Oh, I don't know. She gently petted him. You're just so cute, Baxter. Maybe I'll keep you as my new house cat. Or, better yet, my familiar. You can even accompany me on nights when I go out flying on my broom. Dad groaned. Aw, come on, Tiffany. I'm sorry about the whole second-rate magician thing. To be fair, I didn't call you that. I just said any second- or third-rate magician could do what I saw you do. But you might as well have called me a stage magician. I can do those things anyway, Mom argued. She sighed. But since you did say you were sorry, Mom set Dad on the floor and cast another spell. He exploded in a second burst of magic and found himself human again, sitting where the cat had been.

56:21 He quickly climbed to his feet and faced her. Still want to date me? Mom half-joked. Most guys leave me alone once they learn I'm a hawthorn and a white witch. Dad glanced around. Tonight I learned haunted houses are real, got chased through one by a banshee, and watched you use actual magic. You got me, Tiffany. I believe. My future parents stared at each other. Then Dad took both her hands. Yes, he said. I still want to see you. And before Mom could answer him, Dad brought her to him and gave her the third and final kiss. Dad wrote that he felt Mom's heart pound, probably when she realized the fate Grandma predicted for her had come true.

57:19 Mom knew she would be with Dad for the long haul now. Good thing two or this little mousy wouldn't be here talking to all of you right now, huh? When they came apart, Mom caressed his cheek and smiled. I guess that settles it. Yeah, he agreed. Seeing Dad's watch, she pressed the light. Not much time left until dawn. I need to find that compact. I can try one more thing. She returned to the crystal ball. and cast a spell that changed its green light to ultraviolet. There, Mom cried, pointing across the room. Whoa, Dad uttered, when he saw a section of the wall glow bright under this new light. But what does it mean? Mom crossed to the rectangular glow and read the inscriptions. The patterns shifted and parted until the light vanished and a hidden door opened. revealing another glow beyond. When Mom and Dad stepped through, they found four more crystal balls on pillars, there only to provide light. At the center stood a pedestal holding a single, antique, silver compact. Is that what you're looking for? Dad asked. That's it, Mom confirmed. Now I just need to summon the Grand White Witch herself

58:50 to complete my initiation and become a true White Witch. Before either of them could move, a shadow crossed the crystal light. A figure floated into the hidden room, and Dad recognized it at once. That's her, Tiffany, Dad said, pointing at the figure. That's the Banshee! The Banshee cried out, unleashing a scream that knocked both of my parents to the floor. Then she hovered close to them. Miss me, Baxter? she teased. How do you know me? Dad demanded as he stood up and helped Mom. Simple. I go to school with you. She pointed at Mom. But I came to settle the score with the witch. Who are you?

59:46 Mom demanded. The banshee lowered herself to the floor and changed into a familiar girl. Meredith Horton? Dad gasped. Wowie, Richie's mom was a banshee. I gotta keep reading. Do you think magic belongs only to Hawthorns, Mirrens, or Carnivoshes? Meredith sneered. I tried a shapeshifting spell that was too advanced for me. I read it wrong and used the wrong ingredient. Instead of becoming a shapeshifter, I bonded my soul to a vengeful spirit and became a banshee. She pointed at Mom. I felt your power at Denoyer's Grill.

1:00:30 The moment you used it, you made those people throw their drinks at me. Her body shifted back into its banshee form. But you attacked me just the same, and for that, you have to pay. Meredith floated slightly off the ground. As for you, Baxter, you're going to find out the hard way that I don't take rejection very well. You will never be with Tiffany Hawthorne. Meredith screamed, hurling Mom and Dad into the wall. They struck it hard and fell forward. As Dad pushed himself up, he spotted a metal rod nearby and grabbed it. Take your best shot!

1:01:13 Meredith laughed as he swung at her. Nothing can hurt me. Nothing! While Dad kept Meredith's attention, Mom pulled herself up and lunged for the compact. Another banshee's scream caught her before she could grab it. and sent her flying backward again. I can keep this up as long as I want, Meredith taunted. I heard you earlier. If you don't complete your initiation, that means you lose your powers forever and become a normal human. It won't be much longer until dawn now. Mom pulled herself up and slipped from the room while Meredith turned back to Dad. You should have just kept dating me. she said, sounding heartbroken. I still want you, Baxter, but your heart's with Tiffany Hawthorne now, and that really hurts. We could have been everything to each other. Dad swung his metal rod again. It was never about you, Meredith. Yeah, I liked you, but that's all it was. I never had any real feelings for you. Honestly, I wasn't interested in dating... Anyone at school. And then Tiffany Hawthorne came to our school. Dad gave a small laugh. Yeah, she caught me by surprise. Meredith's face soured. Too bad you'll never find out where things go with Tiffany. I'm going to scream until there's nothing left of you but

1:02:44 bone char. Mom reappeared and cast a spell. Golden light flooded the room, making Meredith throw up her arms and scream. Funny, I thought anything shiny was a girl's best friend, Mom cracked. Guess gold ain't your color. Meredith flew blindly through the light. Mom used the opening to snatch the compact from its pedestal. Come on, Baxter, Mom called out. This way. Dad focused on Mom and moved to her outstretched hand. When he had it, she yanked him out of the secret room. Let's get out of here, Mom said. You don't have to tell me twice. They raced upstairs and nearly reached the front doors when the loudest scream yet tore through the house. Something seized them from behind and hurled them back.

1:03:37 It's not over yet, Meredith growled. This only ends when I say it ends. Dad groaned and moved to Mom, who seemed to be dazed. Meredith surprised him by flying at him, seizing him, and slamming him into a nearby wall. Her eyes blazed green. I still want you, Baxter. Maybe I'll take you home and keep you. In time, you'll learn to accept me. Dad struggled, but Meredith screamed directly into his face. His body went limp. Mom regained her bearings and saw Meredith had Dad. Then Mom remembered she still had the antique compact so she opened it to see the ghostly face staring back at her. Do not wait a moment longer, Tiffany Hawthorne, the ghost quickly advised her.

1:04:33 The sun is rising now. Complete your initiation into the white light and bring me forth. Wow, this story is getting good. Mom held the compact firm. Merry Worth! Merry Worth! Merry Worth! Jeepers! Mom really did know Mary Worth! I gotta ask both her and my ghostly friend about this later. The mirror glass began glowing bright as its energy poured into Mom, the same thing that happens when I call on Mary Worth. Soon the ghost stood where Mom had been. Meredith realized something was wrong and dropped Dad as she turned to face Mary Worth. Who are you? the banshee demanded.

1:05:23 A protector of those who need me, the grand white witch answered. Unhand Baxter Donnerly at once. Meredith unleashed her high-pitched scream at Mary, but found her effort useless. Angry at her failure, Meredith flew at Mary as the ghost uttered a spell. Before the banshee reached Mary, a barrier of golden light formed between them. Meredith cried out, putting her arms in front of her. Those golden lights are draining the remainder of my energy. I must flee. Meredith turned to escape and flew toward Dad. He spun and slammed the door in her path. Fool, I don't need to open doors to escape. Dad gasped when Meredith easily passed through the door. Soon he heard a loud crash and a groan. He opened it to see the banshee hadn't quite escaped. Meredith was almost human again, and groaning.

1:06:28 She looked first at Dad, then Mary Worth. Because of you, my energy is drained. I can't change back without feeding. She reached for Dad. Please. I don't want to die. Dad started toward her, but Mary caught his arm. She will feed upon you if you get too close. Meredith cried out and lunged at Dad, but she tumbled down the rest of the stairway. She was mortal again and completely powerless. Mary cast a containment spell, trapping Meredith in golden energy. You shall not die this day, Meredith Horton, but you cannot be allowed to retain the corrupt banshee spirit within you. Mary uttered another spell. Meredith glowed bright until the energy drew together into a sphere of light.

1:07:26 The evil spirit that had lived inside her was now Mary's prisoner. My powers! They're gone! Meredith growled. She ran back upstairs before disappearing. She turned to Dad and Mary. This isn't over. I'll gain power again. Dad turned to Mary. Should we go after her? Her aura is pure enough to tell me that she has not taken any innocent lives. All she did this night was frighten you. We may only take action if she becomes malevolent enough to pose a threat to innocence. I think I'm starting to understand better why Richie's mom never liked me. I'm going to have to watch myself when I'm around her from now on.

1:08:18 Then Dad remembered. Wait a minute. What about Tiffany? Is she okay? Ghost? Mary answered by holding up the antique compact. Her energy and the imprisoned banshee soul flowed into the mirror until Mom returned, still holding it. Let's get out of here, Baxter, she said, pointing to the doors. Dad took Mom's hand and easily opened one of them. They left the carnivosh estate, and walked out into the chilly morning. By then, it wasn't raining anymore. I guess I'll walk you home, Dad said. And we still have to go to work. school. Mom stopped him. I didn't need your help tonight, but thank you for coming for me just the same. She already had the three kisses Grandma foretold.

1:09:13 This time, though, Mom chose to kiss Dad. When they parted, they simply... looked at each other i guess we're still dating dad asked with his smirky smile mom smiled back sure why not i have a feeling we're gonna be fine when they reached mom's house they shared one more kiss then mom asked him do you want our date to end here dad brightened not really Then let's skip school today and get to know each other some more, she suggested. Come down with that, Dad took her hand.

1:09:59 From there, my future parents kept walking till they made it to downtown village, knowing they had November 1st all to themselves. Present Day Epilogue And that's the end of that journal. I know I can't tell mom and dad I read it. Who knows what they'd do. I put it back in the chest and then I find a bunch of others. Oh man, I really want to read every one and learn more about my parents. Then I check my phone. It's a little after 4 p.m. Maddie?

1:10:39 I turn around and see mom. I got your text. I pick up the silver compact off the floor. I found it right here, just like you said. Here you go. Mom comes closer. No, Maddie. This, everything in this chest, is all yours now. My eyes widen. Mom? She puts a hand on my shoulder and looks down at me. I told you that you come from a long line of white witches. You may be a Donnerly, but you're also a Hawthorne. And it falls to me to teach you the ways of the white light. Inside this chest are many useful things along with several journals from your father and me. Read them on your own time. I can't force you to accept your birthright. You have to make that choice yourself and you don't have to decide right now. Take your time and think about it. Your father and I will respect whatever you decide. I look down at the compact. Mom nods toward it. Use it whenever you call upon Mary Worth. It's been in our family for centuries, granted to us by the Grand White Witch herself. It's an heirloom of the White Light and cannot be destroyed. I definitely don't need any time to think.

1:12:07 I've been part of Mary Worth since I first let her possess me, months ago. We've already saved people together, including you. I'm ready to learn more, Mom. I want to keep helping people. Mom nods and hugs me. Once we part, she heads downstairs, and I open the compact. Just like in the other mirrors, Mary Worth's face appears. Looks like you and me are together for the long haul, I say. Madeline, you are so brave. You have much to learn about the ways of the white light. In time you shall be prolific and prominent as a white witch.

1:12:49 Your mother shall teach you our ways. Listen to her well. In time I shall come to teach you things as well. When we finish I close the compact and turn back to the chest. Another journal tempts me, but it can wait. I head downstairs to see Mom and Dad and Ariel now that they're home from North Ridgeway. After reading that journal and talking to Mom, this little mousie's got a lot to think about. You'll see where the story goes when we have more adventures.
