Terrifying & True | Shark Arm Case: James Smith, Patrick Brady & a Sydney Murder Mystery

A tiger shark vomited a tattooed human arm at a Sydney aquarium in 1935, opening one of Australia’s strangest and most tangled murder investigations.

The shark had been captured and displayed at the Coogee Aquarium and Swimming Baths. On April 25, it regurgitated a man’s forearm in front of visitors. Investigators determined that the limb had not been bitten away by the animal; it had been cut from a body. Fingerprints and a distinctive tattoo identified the victim as James Smith, a former boxer with connections to Sydney’s criminal underworld.

Terrifying & True follows the trail from Smith to Patrick Brady and businessman Reginald Holmes. Police believed Brady had killed Smith and that Holmes knew how the arm reached the sea. Before Holmes could give formal evidence, he was found shot dead in his car after surviving an earlier apparent suicide attempt and a dramatic speedboat incident on Sydney Harbour.

Brady was charged but acquitted after prosecutors could not prove Smith was dead without recovering the rest of his body. The episode separates documented evidence from the competing stories surrounding blackmail, insurance fraud, counterfeit schemes, and organized crime. James Smith’s body was never found, no one was convicted of killing him, and the severed arm remains the unforgettable clue that made the Shark Arm case notorious.
