Stakes ’n Shoguns: Count Dracula Attacks a New Year’s Eve Grindhouse

Stakes ’n Shoguns: Count Dracula Attacks a New Year’s Eve Grindhouse

A New Year’s Eve screening of “Shogun Assassin” becomes a vampire siege when Count Dracula awakens beneath a decaying Manhattan grindhouse.

The unnamed narrator only wants to escape the stale popcorn, broken seats, and front-row drunks long enough to see the film he missed the first time. Instead, the homeless men sheltering inside the theater begin feeding on one another. A desperate wooden stake works, but the apparent vampire hunter has no heroic training—he works reception at a blood bank and becomes sick at the sight of what he has done.

The exits are sealed, bats circle the adjoining auditorium, and the manager’s office offers little beyond garlic salt. A disgraced priest reveals that Dracula survived the end of the nineteenth century, slept beneath the property, and has been restored by feeding on the people who use the cinema for warmth. When the bats merge into a single monstrous form, the survivors need holy water and have almost nothing left to bless.

Dan Wilder’s “Stakes ’n Shoguns” is a profane, darkly comic New Year’s vampire story fueled by grindhouse movies, improvised weapons, Count Dracula, and an extremely unconventional final defense. The recognizable monster and theater setting now lead the metadata for listeners seeking vampire action, holiday horror, and exploitation-cinema energy. Story by Dan Wilder.
