Christmas Cranberries: A Cruel Child, Santa’s List & a Blood-Red Baseball Bat

Christmas Cranberries: A Cruel Child, Santa’s List & a Blood-Red Baseball Bat

Seven-year-old Ronnie hides escalating cruelty before Christmas, convinced that Santa will reward him with the red baseball bat he desires.

Pulling legs from insects no longer satisfies him. The taste of cranberries accompanies the pleasure Ronnie feels while harming animals, lying to adults, and imagining what he could do to his baby sister Elizabeth. He tries to remain “good” just long enough for Christmas Eve, reasoning that Santa in America brings presents rather than the dark companion from his grandparents’ old-country warning.

The brightly lit tree appears to confirm his belief. A shimmering aluminum bat waits beneath a green bow, and Ronnie interprets the gift as permission to stop resisting the hunger. But his father Jim has found evidence of what happened to a missing puppy and understands exactly what the weapon could enable. In this household, the question is not whether Ronnie belongs on the naughty list; it is which adult will act before another child becomes his victim.

L. F. Falconer’s “Christmas Cranberries” is a disturbing holiday morality tale about childhood violence, family folklore, concealed abuse, and a Santa myth stripped of innocence. The title, baseball bat, and cranberry motif now lead the metadata while the final punishment remains inside the story. Story by L. F. Falconer.
