Terrifying & True | The 1982 Murders at Corpsewood Manor
Corpsewood Manor remains one of Georgia’s strangest true crime cases: an isolated handmade brick mansion in the woods outside Summerville, Georgia, built by former Loyola University professor Charles Scudder and his longtime partner Joseph Odom. Their private life was filled with art, homemade wine, animals, off-grid living, and occult-inspired imagery, but rumors of money, Satanism, sexuality, and “devil worship” made them infamous long before the murders.
In December 1982, Kenneth Brock and Tony West went to Corpsewood Manor planning robbery. The attack left Charles Scudder, Joseph Odom, their beloved dogs, and later Navy Lieutenant Kirby Phelps dead. In the aftermath, the case became tangled in media sensationalism, homophobia, Satanic Panic fears, allegations about LSD, and courtroom claims that painted the victims’ beliefs and sexuality as part of the story.
