Pumpkin Spice & Nothing Nice: A Halloween Hater Becomes the Pumpkin Lady

Amber Hanna despises pumpkin spice, Halloween, and excited children—until the Pumpkin Man curses her with a spreading jack-o’-lantern face.

At Frankie’s Donuts on Halloween morning, Amber insults a young trick-or-treater, rejects his father’s request for an apology, and gets orange powder blown into her face. A small mark appears on her neck at Whitman’s Insurance Agency, then spreads across her skin in black veins and pumpkin-orange flesh. Doctors cannot help, and the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger follows her everywhere.

By nightfall, Amber’s eyes, nose, and mouth have transformed into a carved pumpkin. She returns to Frankie’s and waits among children who believe her curse is an extraordinary costume. The boy accepts her apology, reveals that his father is the Pumpkin Man, and offers a final treat: a pumpkin spice latte that may restore Amber by morning—but not necessarily the woman who hated the holiday.
